ISSUE TWO It is of great concern that Kiwi Bank has announced they will be closing the Ellerslie Branch in the near future. These important services must be retained for our community. Kiwi Bank was the initiative of Jim Anderton, a member of the Labour/ Alliance Coalition Government and was launched in 2002. Kiwi Bank is a subsidiary of the State Owned Enterprises, NZ Post, NZ Superannuation Fund and Accident Compensation Corporation. Consequently, it is our bank, yours and mine as New Zealand citizens and taxpayers. The vision was to provide competitive banking facilities and serve the community. The current government needs to listen to the community and persuade Kiwi Bank to reverse their decision to close the Ellerslie Branch. We are not alone in our fight to retain the Ellerslie Branch. A petition has been established by concerned locals to gather support and share concerns which will be presented to Kiwi Bank and NZ Post by our local Labour Party MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan. The Ellerslie community is very fortunate to have the support of Priyanca, the Labour Party List MP for Maungakiekie as our advocate has the
direct link to Government. Please email your concerns and support to priyanca@parliament.govt.nz In past experience when a Kiwi Bank closure announcement is made public the reality is highly imminent. However, recent history has demonstrated a compassion and leadership by our Prime Minister. Hopefully, Priyanca will gain support at the highest level of Government to reverse the Kiwi Bank decision to close the Ellerslie branch. On a more positive note, I want to record congratulations to the owners and staff of Charlie Baxter’s Bar. They demonstrated true Ellerslie community spirit recently by assisting owner Gautum, his family and staff of their next-door neighbour Ellerslie Liquor Shop. Due to sudden ill health the family had to close the shop due to liquor licence requirements. The Charlie Baxters team of volunteers reopened the shop under their licences to enable the family to continue trading and serve their customers until alternative arrangements were made. In addition, through social media and verbal contact locals were encouraged to call in and support the family at the liquor shop. On behalf of all the Ellerslie community I wish to extend best wishes and a speedy
recovery to Gautum. During the month of May, ARTerslie took place, a fun and unique way for young and old to enjoy art demonstrations, exhibitions, kids workshops, chalk artworks and community competitions for finalists to decorate our rubbish bins. A further endorsement of our connected Ellerslie community. My vision of hanging floral baskets continues to get support from building and business owners. There are still many gaps under verandahs and I urge everyone to join those who have committed to the beautification of our village. Each basket only costs $8 per week which includes full maintenance by the service provider, Hire Plants Ltd. Please contact Megan by email megan@ellerslievillage.co.nz and help create the uniqueness Ellerslie Village is famous for. As our magnificent summer draws to conclusion, keep warm and healthy in the autumn and winter months ahead. Please remember to support all the local businesses and help grow our wonderful village. As I write this we are in the middle of our annual art event ARTerslie – this year we have been delighted to add new events including a sold out Margaritas and Masterpieces event at Mexico and a highly successful kids art class with the HeART Minds art club. We hope everyone who attended either these or our other events had a great time. In a few days we will install our public participation art work “Incomplete’ on the blank window beside the Post office. This was a collaboration with international art collective Illegal Art and we hope you had a chance to take part and see what others had written. Keep an eye out for new art installations around the village including some quirky street art – some temporary some permanent. If there are any budding artists out there get in touch, we are always open to new ideas!

DENISE LEE
Member of Parliament deniseleemp@parliament.govt.nz As winter falls upon us, I hope you all are keeping warm during these cold nights. Since I last wrote, a lot has been happening both around our Maungakiekie electorate and in Wellington. Parliament has been busy, we celebrated and commemorated Easter and ANZAC Day, and I recently became the new Patron for the Ellerslie Theatrical Society. Anzac Day is our national day and it was a shame we saw fewer events. I was pleased, however, that both Onehunga and Panmure’s ANZAC parades and services proceeded in light of Auckland Council’s decision to reduce events from last year’s 84 to this year’s 26. Anzac Day brings many of us together to honour all New Zealanders who have continued to serve in the fine tradition of courage and compassion demonstrated by the Anzacs at Gallipoli. I was privileged to be a part of the Mt Wellington/Panmure RSA service and have Jess McKnight, my Maungakiekie Youth MP from One Tree Hill College, join me in remembrance and deliver a heartfelt speech as their youth speaker. Of specific interest locally was the brightness and vibrancy of ARTerslie throughout the month of May. From exhibits, to street art and kids events, our
community came alive with some great artwork. I particularly enjoyed taking part in Chalk it Up in the town square with our local families and businesses. Earlier this year, the Islamic community, Christchurch, and by and large our country, suffered from unprecedented and devastating attacks that were foreign to everything that makes us New Zealanders. It was heart-warming to join Ellerslie following these attacks in a community gathering that gave us the opportunity to meet our neighbours and build friendships. Thank you Town Manager, Megan Darrow, fellow Business Association members, and the Ellerslie Residents Association for your constant efforts in fostering great community spirit.

It is this sort of response and feeling that will always be the antidote to hate. Finally, my office a couple of months ago celebrated its first year of being open. Since then, we have handled hundreds of constituent cases, ran multiple public meetings, drop-in clinics, community clean-ups, and morning teas for community groups. We have lobbied Auckland transport on parking, bus services and successfully called for safety improvements at a high-risk intersection. Being accessible is important to me. If my office can assist you in anyway, please do not hesitate to contact me on 0800 DENISE MP or DeniseLeeMP@parliament. govt.nz.

DESLEY SIMPSON Councillor, Ōrākei board
Who will look after Ellerslie now? Auckland Council have 3 elected representative groups: 1. The Mayor elected from throughout the region 2. C ouncillors - elected from 13 Wards (from which 20 councillors are found) 3. L ocal Boards – elected from 21 Board areas Due to population growth, there are some changes for Ellerslie. From October, most of the suburb of Ellerslie will move from the Orakei ward to the Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward for the election of ward councillors. This complex change is to ensure adequate representation across Auckland and to comply with legislation. As the population of the city centre continues to grow, the number of people concentrated within one ward has begun to outstrip others, diluting their voice in council and spreading representation too thin. The ratio of people to elected member in a ward should not vary from the average across the whole of Auckland by more than 10 per cent. This is to ensure “fair and effective representation for individuals and communities.” The Waitemata ward – representing the Auckland City Centre – has outgrown these proportions so the nearby
12
ellerslievillagemagazine.co.nz
boundaries have been tweaked. Orakei Ward will now absorb Parnell, Newmarket and Grafton in the west and to keep the numbers within limits, move its current part of Ellerslie along with some others into the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Ward. The Orakei Local Board area will not change (which I know is confusing). But Auckland Council has the most complex arrangements in New Zealand. Legislation does not allow the council to change Local Board boundaries. Although I understand the rationale, I will very much miss the conversations, people and discussions with the community of Ellerslie. For almost 9 years I have had the privilege to serve you both as Councillor and as the former Chair of the Orakei Local Board, so am sorry to see this portion of the changes take place. I intend to dedicate my final column, next issue, to the successes and triumphs we have had together over the years. One could say as a regional councillor I’ll still be looking out for Ellerslie but come October, you will be voting for another Councillorthe Maungakiekie-Tamaki Councillor. Whatever your decision then, I’m sure you will continue to be well served.
KIT PARKINSON
Chairman, Ōrākei Local board
I’m incredibly passionate about protecting our environment and ensuring that native species thrive. In our local board area, we are very lucky to have many beautiful trees of both native and non-native species. Our urban forest (ngahere) plays an important role in making our local board area such a great place to live. Recently our local board endorsed a high level kauri protection action plan for parks and reserves within our area. This is ahead of the development of a detailed kauri dieback mitigation programme due in mid-2019. In the Ōrākei Local Board area we have six parks and reserves that contain kauri ecosystems. These are Waiatarua Reserve, Dingle Dell Reserve, Ohinerau/Mt Hobson, Ōrākei Domain, St Johns Bush and Waiata Reserve. Both Waiatarua Reserve and Dingle Dell Reserve are classified as high value kauri ecosystems. Both of these reserves are wellloved and are regularly used for recreation by members of our communities. This means that investment is required to ensure kauri in these reserves remain healthy, are protected and that any diseased kauri are contained and do not become a source of infection. Plans to secure the ongoing health of kauri in our parks and reserves are still underway but solutions may look like track upgrades, installation of boardwalks, hygiene stations, new signage and awareness raising activities. Kauri is a taonga and a keystone species that supports a distinct Aotearoa ngahere ecosystem, sustaining indigenous flora and fauna. As our city grows and building intensifies, we must look to safeguard these precious trees. We are mindful of the need to ensure a balance is struck between the needs of our communities and that of our urban kauri. On behalf of my Ōrākei Local Board colleagues, I wish you a safe and warm winter and I hope you’re able to enjoy the beautiful bays, parks and reserves in our local board area over the season.
ELLERSLIE GOOD SORTS
We are delighted to announce this issues Ellerslie Good Sorts award recipient as Ailish Treacy for some wonderful community business spirit. Recently Gautum from Ellerslie Liquor Centre experienced a major health issue and was unable to open his family’s business. Gita and other family members did their best to manage but were unable to open the store due to liquor licensing requirements. Facing not only health issues but also business difficulties the family was under severe stress, Ailish from Charlie Baxter’s recognised this and offered to step up. With the help and support from the entire Charlie Baxter’s team, Ailish worked with the family
and opened the store for them, selflessly working long hours to keep their business running. Many members of the community also supported the store by popping in to ‘buy a bottle’ and shared their photos and images on the community Facebook page. With Gautum still experiencing health challenges, we encourage our community to continue to support this locally owned family business. We are so proud to have people such as Ailish, the Charlie Baxter’s team and others who have helped in our Ellerslie Village community, thinking of others and taking action to help.

ELLERSLIE THEATRE
Life speeds on even faster and here we are with our second production for 2019 in full swing. We opened on Thursday 6th June with a well-attended Gala Night. If you have never been to one of our gala nights you should come and enjoy the food and drink as well as the current play! Things I Know To Be True will close on 15th June so don’t delay booking.
Fran and Bob have raised their four children to be good, honest,
independent citizens, as did we all, and now they have left to lead their own lives. We take a deep breath and think, ‘now it is our turn, we can pause and relax and smell the roses! Unfortunately, life very rarely works out that way. There is an expected event which causes them all to pause, examine their own lives and realise that no matter what happens there is always the support and comfort of the family to turn to.
Opens Thursday 22nd August and Friday 23rd August. Two Gala Nights! This is our bi-annual One Act Play Festival when we show 3 different plays alternately during the season until 31st August. We will show 3 plays each night so if you wish to see all 6 you will need to come to 2 shows. Each group will have 1 matinee showing. We offer a discount for those who book for 2 shows at the same time.

HEATERS & CLOTHES DRYERS Remember the heater-metre rule – always keep furniture, curtains, clothes and children at least 1 metre away from heaters and fireplaces. Never cover heating appliances or store objects on top of them. Don’t overload clothes dryers and clean the lint filter after each load cycle.
With the changing of the seasons, and the cooler months rapidly approaching, it’s the time of year that brings a unique set of fire dangers that you need to be aware of. Follow these fire safety tips to help keep yourself and your family safe. If you have any fire related queries or need any smoke alarm advice, call Ellerslie station (09 579 4400).
remember to check your smoke alarm batteries
www.fireandemergency.nz
For your fire safety checklist and fire safety advice or call Ellerslie station (09 579 4400) with any fire safety related queries.
FIREPLACES AND CHIMNEYS Clean chimneys and flues before you light the first fire of the season. Always use a fireguard or spark-guard when using an open fire. Never throw rubbish into the fireplace – particularly batteries and aerosol cans. Always empty ashes and ashtrays into a metal bin and pour water over them before disposal. Remember that ashes can take up to 5 days to cool. Keep matches, lighters and anything else that can create fire out of reach of children. ELECTRIC BLANKETS Replace your electric blanket every 5 years with newer heat-protected models, which are safer. Worn and old electric blankets can cause an electric shock, fire and possibly even death. Don’t place heavy objects on the bed while the blanket is on. Make sure the blanket is always flat on the bed. Controls or cords are not twisted or caught between the mattress and bed base. Roll your blanket when you store it for the summer, don’t fold it. PORTABLE LPG GAS HEATER Check to see the gas hose is in good condition and doesn’t show any signs of damage or wear. If the heater does not light straight away, turn it off and then try again. Don’t let the gas build up before trying to relight it. Always have fresh air coming into rooms where a gas heater is in use. Have your heater serviced every 12 months.

FAMILY FRIENDLY FRESH TASTES OF INDONESIA
WITH VANESSA BAXTER FROM FEARLESS KITCHEN
We fell in love with this dish in Indonesia, where my children grew up with it as their first true food — and, what a way to start. We totally love the family-style bowls laden with the fresh ingredients we all enjoy. Full of punch, this soup is a complete meal and lends itself to a shared table. Serve deep bowls full of broth to the table and let everyone pile in their shredded chicken and condiments. This is downright delicious at any time, and the perfect comfort food for someone who may need some tender love and chicken broth for their health! This is truly an Asian chicken soup for the soul.

WHO ARE WE? We are an incorporated society and registered charity with 96 members. With the assistance of the ORAKEI LOCAL BOARD we have secured a lease on the old council parks building at 98 Abbotts Way (Waiatarua reserve) and are currently converting it into a “MensShed” workshop. The building is becoming a focal point for mainly but not exclusively retired men in our community, providing much needed camaraderie and fellowship. The first term of 2019 was an outstanding start to the year for the students, staff and community of One Tree Hill College. There were various highlights, including outstanding NCEA results across all three levels, and many students being endorsed with either merit or excellence endorsements. On average, our NCEA results were 10% above the national average for NCEA. One Tree Hill College students continue to excel at the highest level in so many academic, sporting, cultural and performing arts arenas. On ANZAC day, our award winning boys chorale sang at the official dawn parade service at the Auckland War Memorial Museum. This was a real honour for our students and they certainly did our community proud. Before leaving for the dawn service, the students also opened our own One Tree Hill College War Memorial. This was a very special moment – Lest We Forget. On 15, 16 and 17 August, our students will be performing ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’. This is a school show not to be missed, and will showcase the incredible performing arts talent at the college.

If you would like tickets to see the show, please contact the college reception. Please be quick – performances will sell out. With the college at capacity, the enrolment zone for the college means families in and out of zone will need to be very aware of upcoming deadlines as we start enrolling students for 2020. There will be very limited places available for students who live out of zone – please refer to our website for the college’s enrolment scheme. Our Open Day will be Monday 5 August, followed by our enrolment days on Wednesday 7 and Thursday 8 August, 8am to 8pm. This continues to be a great time to be involved with One Tree Hill College. We certainly have students with exceptional talent and it is wonderful to see them show such pride in the school. I look forward to the many successes which will occur throughout the remainder of the year. N Coughlan Principal

We have listened to some very talented musicians, a group of young achievers who have formed themselves into a trio of flute, violin and viola who were amazing and will have very promising careers ahead of them. We also had some beautiful flute solos from the newly appointed principal flautist with the orchestra. We really do have some wonderful music on these Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. Anyone may attend these mornings, the door fee is only $20 for non members and $15 for members. As well as music we have had interviews with some of the people who work behind the scenes for the orchestra. We spoke with person who organises the stage setting, some 70 chairs, music stands with the correct music on them all carefully placed so the orchestra can file in and sit in an orderly manner like the truly professional group that they are. There is the conductor’s podium with baton and music and sponsor’s name displayed. Then there are the platforms in the auditorium for the photographers and sound engineers for those concerts which are broadcast live. Then there are the people who work designing the programmes and searching the world for conductors and soloists. They can be planning 2 and 3 years ahead. We have learned that working behind our brilliant orchestra is no ordinary 9 – 5 job. It takes a lot of dedication and flexibility, but when the reward is the orchestra we have it is all worthwhile. It all highlights how useful the Friends are with their ability to carry out some of the fringe tasks and also help to raise some funds to help with the enormous expenses incurred in running an orchestra. All the money we raise with subscriptions ($35) per year and door fees etc. are all given to the orchestral coffers, so why not join us on a Friday morning? The next one will be 28th June, as well as music and a talk there will be a finger food lunch during which you can discuss the morning and possibly speak with the musicians and speaker. All for $20! We look forward to seeing you and your friends. For more information ring Rona 579 7605.

issue three With early signs of spring and the days lengthening, we can look forward to springtime and summer ahead. This brings Magical September to Ellerslie, kicking off with the annual Fairy Festival and Pirate Party on September 9th. This is a great promotional day for the Ellerslie Village and encourages people from all over Auckland to enjoy what our village has to offer. Also, other events will be running throughout the month as part of Magical September. Find out more about what’s happening on www.ellerslievillage.co.nz The Ellerslie Business Association has funded and recently installed new fairy lights on the verandahs and shop fronts throughout the village. This makes the village very attractive in the evenings for people visiting and passing through, and has the added advantage of providing extra security. Our hanging basket project is gaining traction and business owners are enthusiastically supporting the installation of these. Feedback from residents has been incredibly positive. Along with the pavement planters the end result will be a welcoming and fresh look showing that our village is connected and caring. We are delighted to welcome new owners of the gym in the Main Street. The young enthusiastic owners of Anytime Fitness Jackson and Alvin are proud of their around 900 membership base and we welcome and encourage these members to enjoy the retail and other services and facilities on offer in our wonderful village. It is always very disappointing to dwell on a negative but unfortunately a small number of business owners regularly park their vehicles for considerable lengths of time in the Main Street. The 30 minute stays are for customers only, for each and every one of the businesses and it is NOT OK or FAIR to park your car in these valuable convenient car parks. Moving the car from park to park is equally unacceptable. Fortunately, it is only a small number of people who violate this regularly, although some do it on a daily basis. This is a selfish attitude and the Business Association implores these few owners to be more thoughtful of your neighbours and fellow business owners in the Main Street.
JOHN RENNELL Chairman of the Ellerslie Business Association
It is very hard to believe we are just over three months away from Christmas. Start your shopping early and please support your wonderful vibrant local village.
Previously known as Stonefields Sports, we changed our name to the more commonly known (and much loved) name of SUNS and as from January this year we are officially known as SUNZ SPORTS Incorporated. We are in the process of redesigning our Uniforms so that by the time the next season starts for all our sporting codes (Netball, Basketball, Athletics & Tennis), our players can don our new playing strips – which I must say, look absolutely fabulous darling! Already our new-look hoodies are a hit and making a splash with our players and supporters with more orders starting to roll in for the
winter season. Expect to see bright splashes of purple, with a dash of orange, scattered about the Auckland Netball Courts and in the Central Auckland Basketball Gyms near you. We also welcome Tennis to SUNZ SPORTS with club training all geared to start in Term 4 this year – watch this space! Also contact us via our Facebook page and Website for registration and further information Finally, we have launched an exciting program to live-stream and video our Club sports teams in action. We trialed the live-stream of our U19 Boys basketball team at the April 2019 Easter Slam

Competition at the Bruce Pulman Arena. A film crew of 10 volunteers did an outstanding job and we are delighted with the results. So much so, that we are now videoing all our netball teams that are in action this term with a delayed telecast that same Saturday night. All our games are posted on our Facebook page. If you want to join our SUNZ SPORTS family then email us at enquiry@stonefieldssports.co.nz your team/individual details or just come down and jump into one of the teams, mix, women, college age, primary age - all are welcome - Fun/Active/Friends. The club also has a great youth program in place which is developing players to feed into the first team.
Women’s First Team target promotion
They’re yet to lose a game this season – but promotion is the main aim for Women’s First Team squad, with an unbeaten season a bonus. Sunday’s 0-0 draw with Norwest United was the first time Ellerslie had not taken maximum points, but it was enough to keep The Ponies top of the AFF/NFF Women’s Conference Division with four wins and a draw from 5 matches. But thoughts of an undefeated campaign are secondary to gaining a place in the Lotto NRFL Women’s Premier Division,
which the club last graced in 2003. “The club has put a lot of resources and effort into helping the team get promoted this year,” Central Midfielder, Anita Trudgen said. “It is really great for the team to have all the support; it creates an environment where we as players want to do everything we can to achieve the common goal. The team is in a good position this year with a big contingent of highly skilled players, so that if we were to gain promotion, then we will be in the best position possible to stay in the Premier Division rather than get relegated after one year.”
Scarlett Hunter, Charlie Collard, Tayla Hawes, Helena Danesh-Clough and Maddy McCormick are a number of the latest crop of talent to come through the youth grades into the women’s squad and Trudgen is impressed with how the youngsters are going. “The young girls who have come up from last years Under 16 team are doing an incredible job. They’ve transitioned into the first team really well and have been upping their game every week and proving their worth. They are making us oldies have to work hard to try hold onto our spots in the team,” Having just missed out on a play-off spot for promotion last season, finishing second to Onehunga Sports, the belief is high that this could be the year. “We beat Onehunga both times we played them last season so I think this gives us even more belief that we are good enough to win the Conference Division and be competitive with the Premier teams,” Trudgen said.

ELLERSLIE PLAYCENTER We have had a very busy Term One here at Ellerslie Playcentre, from welcoming new families and visitors during our annual Playcentre Awareness week to improving our landscaping and outdoor play areas. Over the last few months we have arranged a well-needed upgrade our centre deck, to make it watertight and more accessible for our guests and members. We would like to pass on our deepest gratitude to the Mt Wellington Foundation, whose community grant has provided an amazing contribution to this project! Building got underway in the school holidays and will be finished this week.- we all look forward to enjoying a larger outdoor play space during those cold, wet Winter days. Feel free to contact us for a visit, and come check it out! We have welcomed two new babies to our centre this month, and can’t wait to meet the other two due this term! Babies of any age and stage can
enjoy playing at our centre, and are welcome to join us from birth onwards. Another unique benefit of being a Playcentre member, is the help new families enjoy from the centre. From help with evening meals to drop-off sessions for older siblings, Playcentres are truly supportive communities. The new year has also seen us farewell some of our big kids, who graduated to primary school in Term One. We were sad to see them go, but wished them all the best for their move and have loved being updated about all about their new adventures. If anyone is considering joining our centre - or would like to visit Playcentre to see what it’s all about - we would love to hear from you. Children aged Birth to 5 Years and their caregivers can enjoy three free visits during the school term - please email us at ellerslie@playcentre.org. nz or visit our Facebook page for more information.
Duplo: Lego for little hands Brought to us by the creators of Lego, Duplo is a product range specifically designed for children 1½ to 5 years. Duplo blocks are twice the length, height and width of regular Lego which makes them easier to handle by little hands and ensures they are less of a choking hazard. Blocks and Duplo type toys are great early years play equipment because they help cultivate children’s creativity, imagination and problem-solving skills, as well as cognitive coordination. Add that to the fact that they aren’t messy, hardly break and are totally accessible, we find them a popular addition to the Ellerslie Toy Library both with children and parents. You will find more than 20 Duplo sets on the left-hand shelves in the storage room. There is an array of choices outside the basic block packs, including; Airport, Cars, Hospital, Big Farm, Zoo, Fire Truck, Cake Set, and so many more. They don’t tend to stay on the shelves long so keep an eye out the next time you visit, and fingers crossed you see the set you (and the little ones) want most. Check out our website ellerslie.mibase.co.nz to view all our toys. Sign up to a trial or annual membership online or come into the library Saturday 9-11am or Wednesday 7-8pm to look around. ELLERSLIE SCHOOL Term 1 of 2019 was an incredibly busy term at Ellerslie School as our students took part in many summer sports such as softball, cricket, tag and swimming, not to mention our regular fitness and PE programme at school. We had several teams compete at Zone sports events, and they did us proud with their sporting achievements and the way they displayed sportsmanship. As a school we celebrated Green Day with a dress up, kicked off our House Whanau competition with the annual parade and wheelay race. Early in the term we appointed all our School Leaders and Peer Mediators for 2019 as well as our important Librarians, Sport and Music Monitors. We have had many lovely additions to our landscaping and play spaces, including a dragonfly and Flintstone car in the acorn patch. Thanks to our ACES team.

CHRIST CHURCH Our Village Church At the beginning of this year we sadly farewelled our lively vicar, Reverend Rebecca Heale who has accepted a new ministry post working with her husband Reverend Kris Heale in a shared ministry position. Rebecca very quickly involved herself in the Ellerslie community, organising activities for the Fairy and Pirate Festival, taking part in the Santa Parade and establishing a very much appreciated Space programme for first time mothers and their babies. The Ellerslie community will miss her bright presence from its events. While the parish is going through the process of the appointment of a new vicar, the Reverend Kumar Anandanayagam is the interim priest in charge.Kumar has come to us from years of experience as a priest and he is committed to ensuring that the momentum of parish activities continues. This means that the Space programme will continue as strongly as before and that our church will continue to play its part in the community. We are therefore very pleased to be able to host another concert by the One Tree Hill College choirs on Sunday 9th June in the Church at 2pm, and will warmly welcome any from the community who wish to attend. Later in the year we expect to begin on our Church Renovation and Windows Restoration project which has been so generously supported by groups and individuals in the community. We are immensely grateful for the interest and support we have received. The Parish Wardens

THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD DENTAL CARE AND NUTRITION As the first NZ-born Chinese female to graduate from the University of Otago Dental School, Ellerslie Dentist Angela Lowe-Ho practised locum Dentistry before setting up in private practice. She says her first years of Dental practice were full clearance extractions and restoring with Dentures, and also treating Dental Benefit children with amalgam mercury fillings! Fortunately with advances in dentistry over the years such things are no longer commonplace.
“Angela in deep concentration advancing her hands on practical skills at NZDA pre conference hands on masterminded with Dr Eduardo Mahn from Chile with residency in Germany”
Angela uses Scientific Dentistry with a Holistic approach and philosophy to treat more than just your teeth and gums. She recognises that your oral health lifestyle, which includes everything you do with your mouth, not only brushing and flossing but also what you eat and drink, impacts your entire body, and she offers personalised strategies and programs to make a positive impact on her patients’ overall total health and wellbeing as well as their teeth. She gives advice and support alongside other recommendations to maximise the benefits from their investment into the Dental procedures and treatments needed in their mouths. Angela prides herself on keeping up to date with current trends and advances in dentistry. In 2019, she has already invested cost and time to attend full days, fortnightly and monthly, advanced hands-on Dental Professional development, so that she continually keeps abreast of new techniques from the top minds and specialists in Dentistry. At her Dental Centre she places huge importance on the responsibility and trust patients have when choosing her as their Dentist and uses safe, bio-compatible and now also bio-active materials that remineralise and strengthen teeth. She engages her patients in helping to decide between their Treatment options to meet their needs, values and expectations. “Dentistry has evolved into an exciting area and isn’t just about costly surgical procedures to treat disease, in fact Dental disease is totally preventable!” says Angela.

Today with a mercury free practice, we successfully restore teeth and Create Smiles with treatment strategies that are minimal intervention, safe options of oral care, providing where needed added strategies to support your health goals. “We have a specific focus beside excellent Dentistry on lifestyle habits, biofilm balance and nutrition, to improve your mouth with the additional benefit of overall health and well-being” says Angela. Angela takes great pride in keeping up to date with the current advances in dental knowledge. With her wealth of knowledge in how your mouth affects the rest of your body, and how the rest of your body affects your mouth, she is able to aid her patients in gaining or maintaining overall good health. She says the mouth, tongue plus supporting gum and bone structures are powerful indicators of health if you are having issues. Emergency pain relief, broken fillings, root canals extractions especially wisdom teeth, bleeding gums including hygiene and hygienist treatments are still a primary initial focus of care.
Angela has always gone to extra lengths to ensure my teeth are fixed and has improved my dental hygiene with her knowledge and advice heaps. My diet is healthier as a result of her nutrition advice as well. She really does have a holistic approach – treating the whole person, not just your teeth in isolation. Angela also makes sure that I can manage the payments for her treatments in a way that fits my income.” Genevieve
Within 3 days of my initial contact I was booked in. Angela was very attentive to my concerns, spending an extraordinary amount of time getting a good feel for what was going on with my mouth and health. I received the most thorough dental clean I have ever had and plenty of sound advice going forward.” Kathy R
When I first met Angela, my teeth were in a very sorry state. I had a number of abscesses and broken teeth. 9 months later I am very happy to say that Angela has given me back my smile and also a strong set of teeth! I cannot praise Angela enough for her knowledge in dentistry and cosmetic dentistry field” – Ben J Neal

Ellerslie Combined Probus Club has had a flying start to the year with a very successful 25th birthday party in March where 4 of the founding members cut a delicious cake baked by one of them. We also presented 5 members with Life Membership certificates in appreciation of their continued support of the club over those 25 years. The timing of Easter and Anzac day prevented us from meeting in April but we had a most interesting talk in May from the police force’s handwriting expert, Mike Marin in the Ellerslie Memorial Hall and will have a talk from a senior officer from St. John’s Ambulance Association which promises to be very interesting. Of course June is halfway through the year, and we will all meet at Waipuna Lodge for a mid-winter lunch. Don’t forget to ask your friends to join us at these meetings and outings. Particularly the outings which is a very relaxed way for us to meet each other and perhaps decide to join the club. We always like you to attend one or two outings and meetings before you take the plunge and actually pay the $15 subscription fee and become a member. There is no door charge for the Friday mornings and the outings vary in cost depending on where they are going. Do not forget the ever popular board
ELLERSLIE TAI CHI Tai Chi classes continue to support older adult’s fitness in our Ellerslie community. Our weekly class is held at 10.30-11.30am in Ellerslie’s Leicester Hall. Tai Chi develops the awareness and confidence in how to move safely and prevent falls. The slow, deliberate footwork brings more awareness of our connection with the floor and of how to effortlessly and naturally stay balanced. As you continue to shift your weight back and forth, you get more familiar with being able to balance in a number of different
games mornings at 9.30 every Thursday morning in the Christ Church Hall in Ladies Mile. This is organised by the Probus club but you do not need to be a member to join in. Just come along and have fun. Definitely FUN not competition. If you’ve never played Mah Jong, Scrabble, Rummi Cub etc. Just come along and have ago. We all started there. We also have a writing group who enjoy writing short anecdotes from childhood memories or just fiction.
positions and in how to maintain your balance on an uneven pavement or while navigating a busy street or a shopping mail. Tai Chi balance can be practiced sitting or standing and is suitable for most people. ACC recommends attending this class. Scientific research tells us that one in three people aged 65+ will fall and injure themselves. The risk increases as we progress through life. Research also shows people who exercise regularly strengthen their legs and core, their balance improves and their risk of falling decreases by almost a third.
Then there is the newly formed stitch group who sit and chat and sometimes actually do some handwork! There is no need to sit at home feeling lonely with nothing to do. We look forward to meeting you at either the Probus meetings at 10.am every 3rd Friday of the month at the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall, or at one of the smaller groups. If you would like further information please ring Maureen Reed 09 520 7403.
