Aside from the Fairy Festival, planter boxes, fairy lighting in the village, and this magazine, recently the Business Association has also been working together with local residents on community initiatives including the Ellerslie Community Garden popping up behind the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall and the Ellerslie Community Fruit and Vegetable sharing stand on Tecoma Street (outside Shooting Stars Daycare). These initiatives have been undertaken by some wonderful locals who have community at the very heart of their being. Lynn, Diana, Catherine, and Julena, Ellerslie is very lucky to have you creating and nurturing projects such as these, thank you so much for all your work. We are very thankful too for the donation of the stand
itself from Element Living and Cook Brothers Construction – it certainly is a wonderfully made stand! These initiatives are for the benefit and enjoyment of all in Ellerslie– pick a few herbs for your dinner or drop off some excess produce from your garden at the sharing stand. The ethos is give what you can, take what you need and it’s a wonderful way to add another connection to your neighbours and community. On opening our sharing stand we have been hugely supported by Ellerslie Four Square and Ellerslie Supermarket. They as well as many of our local business support community initiatives, whether it be donation of prizes for raffles, donated bread for school sausage sizzles or services in kind for local community groups. Christmas is a great time to show that support in turn and shop locally for your Christmas needs. Order your ham locally, browse our local retailers for Christmas gifts (I bet you will be surprised at what treasures can be found) and choose our local hospitality retailers for your Christmas celebration venues. So this Christmas love where you live and and choose to support local. I wish you all a relaxing festive season surrounded by love and gratitude for your blessings. Megan

issue four Ellerslie Village – our year in review…. Christmas celebrations again remind us of the festive period ahead and summer holidays for many. As 2019 approaches it is an opportunity to reflect on the past year. Another progressive and successful year for Ellerslie Village. The anchor to our growth is the Ellerslie Business Association and Team. On 26th February, 2018 The Strategic Plan for 2018 - 2022 was launched. Many of the objectives have been achieved, new Branding, new Website, six new Village Gateway signs and new flags. The EBA and team seek to grasp and extend Ellerslie vibrancy, uniqueness and soul to become the town centre of choice. They are excited about the future for Ellerslie with implementation of the Strategic Plan. Beautification of the village continues with new fairy lights to verandahs on Main Highway. This is a constant visual joy and additional public security. With the financial support of the Orakei Local Board art projects have been initiated, Chorus boxes have been painted in mural style, a wooden gate has been installed between the Four Square and Union Post to improve the visual impact and cover up an unsightly area. EBA planter boxes with seasonal flowers throughout the village have been extremely well received. The hanging floral baskets outside our jewellery shop are a compliment to the ground planter boxes and we receive positive feedback constantly. Thank you to those businesses who have contacted me recently and assured me of their commitment to support the project and also installing baskets. I look forward to the momentum growing. EBA recently met with Auckland Racing Club to redevelop relationships and explore opportunities to our mutual advantage. We also are delighted that they are about to reopen after their track improvements and additions and we wish them a successful racing season. JOHN RENNELL Chairman of the Ellerslie Business Association
It is with regret and concern that Auckland Council are proposing boundary changes that would split Ellerslie from Orakei Ward to Maungakiekie Area. EBA do not support the boundary changes and strongly objected to the proposal. If implemented it would separate our village from Ellerslie Racecourse which is an integral part of the Ellerslie area. We were disappointed that the Representative working party did not take on board our concerns and await the outcome of the Governing body’s meeting. EBA are researching CCTV security coverage of the village working together with the police and Auckland Transport. Thank you to Murray Wells who leads the Community Patrol, a wonderful group of volunteers keeping our area safe and liaising with police. Thank you, Orakei Local Board, in particular Rosalind Rundle and Carmel Claridge and the Ellerslie Residents Association for your continued support to EBA and our Community. My role is made very easy by Megan Darrow, our Town Centre Manager and her assistant, Karen. Your passion, enthusiasm and attention to detail is very much appreciated. At the recent Orakei Local Board Business Awards 2018 Ellerslie was extremely well represented as Finalists in the nominations. Congratulations to them all. Ellerslie Jewellers and Engravers were fortunate and extremely proud to be awarded The Community Excellence Award. However, we take this as an award to the whole of Ellerslie Village Community with whom it is a privilege to be part of. Recently Ellerslie Business Association had its AGM and election of the board. I congratulate and thank the successful officers who were re-elected, Murray Wells, Aaron Telfer, Sandra Lees, Rhys Mountfort and Dave Donoghue. I appreciate the continued confidence of the Board members re-electing me again. It is an honour to serve the Ellerslie Community. Please remember to support the Santa Parade on Sunday 2nd December. Very best wishes for the festive season and a prosperous New Year to you all

Wow, it’s hard to believe how fast 2018 has gone and that December is already upon us. As I sit here and write this summer column, I can’t help but reminisce over the last 12 months and think about the numerous events that have made my first year as an MP nothing short of exhilarating.
DENISE LEE Member of Parliament DeniseLeeMP@parliament.govt.nz
The 23rd September marked one year since I was elected as the local MP for Maungakiekie. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve the wonderful people of Maungakiekie- both within the electorate and in Wellington. Thank you to the many volunteers, friends, and supporters who have dedicated their time and energy to helping me serve the community. Together, we have achieved a lot and have plenty more planned for the next 12 months! Summer holidays are fast approaching and as the festive season arrives, there is much to look forward to in our local area, including the annual Ellerslie Santa Parade. The recent Fairy Festival and Pirate Party was a great event, attracting one of the largest crowds to date. I was pleased to man the Fairy Floss machine with Ellerslie School for the seventh year in a row. While it’s always a sticky job, it never gets old! A special thank you to Town Manager Megan Darrow, the Ellerslie Business Association, and to all the volunteers and stall holders who made this event as successful as it was. Bring on next year! Michael Park School held their Summer Fair and the Ellerslie community launched their second Ellerslie Fruit and Vegetable Sharing Stand that is situated outside Shooting Stars Early Childhood Centre on Tecoma Street. It’s been a pleasure following the dedication and drive of our local residents who have created these food stands, and I’m encouraged to see what community connections can create! Speaking of, my office recently hosted a couple of fundraisers that helped raise awareness for two worthy causes:

Blue September and Loud Shirt Day. We could not have achieved this, nor raised the amount we did without the support and generosity of Ellerslie Four Square and Ellerslie Bakers Delightthank you. It is with great excitement that I announce Jess McKnight from One Tree Hill College as my Maungakiekie Youth MP for Youth Parliament 2019. Jess will partake in a sixmonth programme, including a two-day Youth Parliament in Wellington next year, representing the views of our electorate and her peers. Jess is a talented and hardworking student who comes widely endorsed from her family, friends and school. Watch this space! I also want to thank every other applicant for their interest and I admire their keenness in politics. My office will be closed over the Christmas and New Year period and will re-open around midJanuary. I hope you all have a safe and festive season surrounded by cherished friends and families.
Ellerslie AFC have recently attained the New Zealand Football Quality Club Mark (QCM) Award. QCM is a national partnership with NZ Football, the seven federations and 17 Regional Sports Trusts throughout NZ.
initiatives to raise awareness within our club of our impact on the local community and environment. It is by engaging with our community in a variety of ways other than simply providing football that the club has met the requirements of the QCM award.’
The QCM programme aims to promote continuous improvement in the way football is delivered and support clubs as they adopt standards of best practice. To achieve the QCM award clubs must demonstrate that they are well-run organisations with appropriate governance processes, their ability to deliver high-quality football programmes and that they promote a positive environment, where someone can safely enjoy the activities and facilities offered. The award is recognition that Ellerslie AFC meets the NZ Football standard of a wellrun, community focused club. Meeting the QCM criteria ensures that Ellerslie have people in place to coordinate player
development, coach education, referee development and management of volunteers. Club Chairman, Tim Adams says, ‘It gives our members a level of confidence that the club has people and processes in place to perform well off the field. We have a tremendous volunteer base that enables the club to provide a positive football experience for our members. We have implemented sustainability initiatives that have involved new groups within our community and we expect these
Adams says the club is continuing to develop their facilities and programmes. ‘The club has worked very hard to improve our facilities in recent years. Six years ago we had a No. 1 grass pitch with three lights along one sideline and pitches on the lower fields that were unplayable in the wet. Now we have a fully floodlit turf and training area with three fully floodlit sand based pitches on the lower fields. This means more teams are able to train and play at Michaels Ave which has certainly brought the club together. This drive to improve our facilities will continue as we look to upgrade our changing facilities and clubrooms. We certainly recognise the tremendous support we have received from the Orakei Local Board in making these improvements possible.’

to serve Auckland’s needs, it is a record that will need to be broken. I have championed the Value For Money programme and this showed its first successes this year. The first two deep dives into how Council goes about its business were able to realise benefits of $112.4 million in procurement and $179 million from delivery of water services.
DESLEY SIMPSON Councillor, Ōrākei Board desley.simpson@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz 021971786
This month I would like to share some good news and highlight some improvements and progress that Council has made over the last financial year. Auckland Council’s Annual Report was released in late September and it shows that whilst a long way from being perfect, Council has controlled more of its costs, reduced reliance on rates as a funding source and improved organizational efficiency all while delivering a record capital investment programme to support Auckland’s growth. In the past I have been very vocal about my disappointment when Council has overspent a generous staff budget, but this year Council reported that staff costs were under budget for the parent (what mayor and councillors control, not CCO’s) and furthermore that staffing for key Council services increased while ‘back office’ staff were reduced. For a city that is growing by more than 800 new Aucklanders per week, this is no mean feat. Other highlights included the delivery of $1.7billion in new assets for Auckland. This is a record for the Council, although given that the Long Term Plan envisages $26.2billion of infrastructure over 10 years
Of course, there are still many areas where we need to improve. Our performance in the key area of processing our regulatory consents is a cause for concern with timeliness statistics showing that we are not meeting the statutory deadlines nearly enough. However even here, there are signs that in more recent months the regulatory teams have been making the improvements. All in all, the Annual Report shows that the Council organisation is on a good path. This was confirmed again by the issuance of AA credit ratings by international ratings agencies – one step below central government and ahead of our retail banks. The other main piece of news is to let you know that, pending a final decision from the Local Government Commission, the boundaries of the Orakei Ward will change at the next local body election. Remember a WARD can have more than one local board but in our case will only have one Councillor. The area south of Abbotts Way will join the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Ward rather than the Orakei Ward. This change does not affect Local Board boundaries, so those of you currently in the Orakei ward will remain within the Orakei Local Board area but may have a different Councillor. Confusing I know, but the boundaries needed to move in order to reflect the shape and numbers of Auckland residents which has changed markedly since Auckland Council’s amalgamation in 2010. Our region has come a long way since then, but still has a long long way to go. I’m committed to keeping positive and improving Council performance and in doing so delivering better outcomes for our communities and residents.
KIT DAVIS Chairman Ōrākei Local Board
I’m incredibly passionate about protecting our environment and coastal spaces. So I find it concerning to know that New Zealand is one of the highest producers of urban waste in the developed world and that one of the top five items found in our coastal litter is single-use plastic shopping bags.
W
Single-use plastic shopping bags have been a hot topic this year following the Government’s decision to phase them out. The Ōrākei Local Board area has some of the best beaches and coastal areas in Auckland, much loved by locals and visitors alike. We’re passionate about protecting our coastlines so we’re in full support of a voluntary ban on single-use plastics used by retailers and distributors operating in Ōrākei, starting in the Tamaki Drive area. We also wholeheartedly support the introduction of initiatives which reduce plastic packaging from imported and New Zealand made products. In principal, we do support a mandatory phase out of single-use plastic shopping bags but we want to see research into what a blanket ban actually looks like and the implications of it. Current classifications for plastic bags are overly complicated and we want to ensure manufacturers and retailers aren’t inadvertently shifted toward thicker plastic bags which would actually take longer to break down. We want to ensure a balance is struck between the needs of our Ōrākei community and that of our coastal assets. As we head towards Christmas, don’t forget to mark the Ellerslie Santa Parade down in your calendars! The Parade kicks off at 11am from the corner of Cawley Street and Main Highway on Sunday 2nd December. The board is proud to support this fantastic community event that is now in its 19th year. On behalf of my Ōrākei Local Board colleagues, I wish you a happy and safe festive season and hope you’re able to enjoy the beautiful coastlines and parks in our Ōrākei ward over summer time.

ELLERSLIE FIRE STATION Summer is fast approaching, and like everyone else, we at Ellerslie station are looking forward to longer days, refreshing drinks on the deck, and dusting off the BBQ. Many Kiwi homes have a gas-powered BBQ outside. These are great for cooking during the summer, but can also pose a fire risk if not stored and maintained correctly. Here are some tips for reducing the risk of fire when using BBQs and gas cylinders. THE SOAP BUBBLE TEST A common cause of BBQ fires is gas leaking from where the BBQ hose fits into the cylinder valve. Whenever you connect a gas cylinder to a BBQ, make sure it’s hand tight. You can do this by turning the gas cylinder on, and then pouring a little soapy solution (1/4 cup of water and a squirt of liquid suds) over the valve.
ENTRIES BY 16 DECEMBER 2018
If any bubbles are created you may have a gas leak. Turn the valve off and replace the cylinder O-ring. BBQs • BBQs are potentially dangerous when used carelessly or when consuming excessive amounts of alcohol. Treat your BBQ the same way you would a stove: don’t drink and fry, and avoid leaving cooking unattended. • Ensure you regularly check and maintain any fittings and connections. Use the soap bubble test to make sure there are no leaks. • Leave plenty of clear space around the BBQ. Make sure there is no nearby debris that could catch fire. • Supervise children at all times when using the BBQ. • Remove all excess fat from the BBQ after each use. GAS CYLINDERS

• Use the soap bubble test to make sure gas cylinders are secure and not leaking. • Make sure the cylinder is turned off when you’ve finished using it. • Have all gas appliances serviced according to manufacturer instructions. • Store and install cylinders in an upright position.

MERCY HOSPICE SPREADS FESTIVE CHEER RECYCLE, REUSE AND REPURPOSE YOUR WAY THROUGH CHRISTMAS BY CANDICE THUM
There is an almost tangible excitement outside the doors of one of Ellerslie’s retail stores. People are waiting, talking, shifting from foot to foot in anticipation. Sneak peeks through the doors until the bolt lifts and the door swings open. Smiles beam from faces of shoppers and staff alike as we all tumble into the store. It’s not quite the rush of Boxing Day sales, but for those of us waiting it is still exciting. The surprise is – or maybe not a surprise for many – this isn’t a grand opening for flash fashion retail. It is the daily opening of doors at Mercy Hospice, a second hand store. “Gone are the days of second hand shopping being something for the hippies,” store manager Emily Dearsly says. “Nowadays it is totally acceptable, and almost braggable, to say ‘I got it from the op-shop’. There’s an uprising in second hand shoppers and it has never been more fun to step inside a second hand store.” Ellerslie Mercy Hospice comes under the umbrella of Hospice New Zealand, and is one
of eight stores in the Auckland central area. With Christmas approaching the store is only going to get busier. Christmas decoration sales and promotions started the first week of November and it is well stocked to be a one-stop-shop for bargain hunters during the festive spending spree. Emily started working at the store, which raises fund for Mercy Hospice, five years ago. The transition from her job in a recycle boutique in Ponsonby, to Ellerslie’s store manager was a match “made in heaven”.
You can make the gifts more personal and unique and stretch those precious dollars further.
16
Emily would often spend her lunch breaks across the road at Hospice Mercy Ponsonby and she was quick to apply when the Ellerslie position opened up. “It’s no secret I’m a keen second hand shopper,” she says. “My family and friends have come to the understanding any gifts from me will come from Mercy Hospice, and believe me each year these are the most superior gifts. I think my family actually look forward to them.” A shameless plug for second-hand gifts this is not. Mercy Hospice Ellerslie really does have it all at bargain prices. Fashion, homewares, books, shoes, jewelry, fashion accessories, electronics, furniture, kitchenware, toys and more are all under one roof at the Ladies Mile location. “You can make the gifts more personal and unique and stretch those precious dollars further. I call it guilt free giving and receiving, because even if they don’t really like the gift, and end up donating it back, someone else might be lucky to find it and give it new life!” Emily explains. Mercy Hospice Ellerslie is part of the community thread – both for local businesses and people. Shoppers have been known to “pop in” from suburbs over half an hour away. On occasions other businesses have donated goods and services for special Hospice fundraising events, while the store itself often calls on the local jeweler for valuations of donated pieces and, of course, has its tea and coffee milk account at the local Four Square.
“Working with a team of volunteers has been the most humbling experience. Our doors literally would not open without them. It is overwhelming to know there are people in this world who willingly give up their precious time and energy to this cause.” The reputation for good service and quality second-hand finds precedes the Ellerslie Hospice store. Anita, a volunteer, knows why. “The vibe here is something you cannot put into words. That comes from having a good manager and is of credit to her, because why would we come here and be miserable? We’re here because we’re passionate. Enjoying the time with each other and the customers brings us back each shift,” Anita says. “Our merchandise is of such high quality. We are fortunate we can pick and chose from our donations and put out only the best. Even though it is second hand we want it to be of good quality.” For now Anita and the rest of the volunteers, supported by Emily, are gearing up for the Christmas rush, just like any other retail outlet. The doors open at 10am to 4pm daily Monday to Sunday and will even be open on Christmas Eve until midday. Make the most of it. I did.
A team of 30 volunteers works the 14 weekly shifts and is the “loveliest, liveliest” bunch according to Emily. Weekly, sometimes daily, meetings to talk about new ideas and ways to promote incoming merchandise often prove highlights for Emily. “You never know what is going to come through that door as a donation. Recently we got a box of hair extensions and one volunteer spent the day brushing them all out, taking the time to package them nicely and now they are on the floor and selling fast.

ELLERSLIE PLAYCENTRE Our last term has been full of exciting activities and events as well as our usual child led play sessions. There has been lots of enthusiasm for our new mud pit and kitchen which the children have loved exploring, our washing machines not so much! Our Tamariki have visited Ambury Farm, Cornwall Park, Waiatarua Reserve and Stonefields School. Through these trips we’ve explored the wonderful area we live in and especially enjoyed seeing all the new life appearing over Spring time. We had lots of fun at our Whananu Disco. It was great to see all our Tamariki, past and present dressed up and dancing. Our recent Pamper Night Fundraiser was also a huge success, we raised about $500 and was a great opportunity to relax and catch up with our friends at the same time. Thank you to everyone who supported us. Playcentre is a parent led early childhood educator. This term we held our AGM and celebrated the hard work and achievements of the year in the luau/tiki style. 5 YEARS OF ACHIEVEMENTS The school roll has grown from 961 to 1160. The school now has a zone and we have a lengthy waiting list for students to be a ccepted. We are a proud member of the Maungakiekie Community of Learning and have embedded very strong links with our local contributing schools, especially Ellerslie School. We have enjoyed significant community support, as well as their confidence.
We hosted our 60th reunion with over 700 former students in attendance. There have been significant property developments including 2 new classrooms, new sports changing rooms, refurbished dance and drama rooms, various new sporting facilities, extensive landscaping, new carparks, covered walkways, and a new food technology room... just to name some. WE HAVE ADDED A FIBRE WIRELESS INTERNET NETWORK THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL.
It has been another year of outstanding student achievement and success at One Tree Hill College. I continue to be so proud of the achievements of our students, whether in their academic studies, sporting, cultural, music, performing arts or other pursuits. Our unwavering emphasis on student achievement continues to make a real difference and our NCEA results for 2018 are tracking to once again reach new heights of success. This high level of academic attainment is testament to the high quality teaching and learning programmes on offer at One Tree Hill College. Recently, I have been reflecting on the outstanding group of Year 13 students who are graduating One Tree Hill College this year. Celebrating the amazing contributions that they have made, which in most cases have been over the past 5 years. So in doing so, I have thought a lot about their journey since arriving at the college in 2014 and the many achievements in that time for the college. In the last five years: 2018 has been yet another great year in the 63 year history of One Tree Hill College. It has been a year of outstanding student achievement and success, in which the college has continued to strive for higher things. Although out of zone enrolments are now via a waiting list, we are still enrolling students from families within our local area – please refer to our website for the college’s enrolment scheme. We invite all families wishing to enrol their children for 2019 to contact the college reception on 579-5049 to make an appointment. As always, I would welcome any interested members of our community who wish to take a tour of the college to contact me to arrange an opportunity for me to show you around our college. I wish you all a happy and safe Christmas and New Year! N Coughlan Principal 20
Various school trips have taken place, including adventures to Silicon Valley, South America, New York… and planning has begun for the next adventure to Tanzania in 2020. There has been the development of very strong student and staff leadership teams throughout the college.
A highly regarded music programme has been established, with a boys chorale who have been in the Big Sing national finals 4 times. We have developed a sports programme with achievements to be in the top echelon of Auckland College Sport – premier and junior netball success, the 1st XV rugby team now being in the 1A competition (including a final at Eden Park), 4 times NZ baseball champions, and a Commonwealth Games gold medallist, David Liti, who was in Year 13 as our current Year 13 began their journey at One Tree Hill College.
THE STUDENTS AND STAFF HAVE RAISED OVER $75,000 FOR OUR CHOSEN CHARITIES. We have had confirmation from the Education Review Office - who rated our college as being at the highest level of performance. Scholarships averaging $175,000 per year have been awarded to students at Senior Prizegiving. There has been high quality teaching and learning, led by exceptional senior leaders and teachers. NCEA academic results have increased to be over 80% at all three levels and well above national average - setting our students up for bright and exciting futures.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM
Michael Park School gives all our students from kindergarten to year 13 ample opportunity to work with their hands to create beautiful, artistic and practical pieces, helping to develop an understanding of natural materials and creative problem solving. When you enter our main playground you are met by the large tent constructed from bamboo and canvas, with stone and woodworking possibilities within it. On the hill behind the middle school classrooms, terraced gardens are full of delicious salads, vegetables and herbs. The Outdoor Classroom programme makes use of traditional arts and crafts techniques including wood carving, clay work, fire building, bow and arrow making and crafts with copper, leather and bone. This allows students to experience the transformation of the most basic raw materials to something of real beauty and usefulness, by their own hands.
Students work in all the gardens school wide, participating in jobs that the seasons require such as planting from our own nursery, removing invasive plants from our landscaped spaces and pruning. Students also make liquid fertilizers, fungicides and herbicides with organic materials, gather and sow seeds, plant the seedlings, harvest and cook fruit and vegetables, prepare salads for the teachers lunches, care for the worm farms, mulch the gardens and propagate shrubs from cuttings and seeds to feed the birds and insects. Within this outdoor environment students engage in meaningful activities that will introduce them to living processes which are bypassed by many children because of our modern way of living. These practical activities support and enhance the classroom teaching and experience.
Michael Park School is a state integrated area school offering Steiner education for students from kindergarten to year 13. For further information about upcoming open days or to enquire about an expression of interest pack visit our website www.michaelpark.school.nz or contact our enrolments officer on 579 3083.
Opening the door to new opportunities. Tonia Hill, Crisp Graphics
whose website won Website of the Year, and Ellerslie Village, whose branding was nominated for Best Branding Package), as well as for other Kiwi businesses.
Taking a local approach to design proves its worth in awards In today’s global age, business is conducted online, between cities, and across countries to great effect. However, there’s still something to be said to taking a local approach to business – one that’s been proven successful by Tonia Hill from Crisp Graphics, who recently won two awards (from four nominations) at the Rocketspark Design Partner Awards. The awards, which are voted for by other design partners, recognised the work Tonia did for two different local businesses (Tasty Pot Co, 24
“Tonia’s design is just really good – she thinks about the business as a whole rather than it just being pretty shares Greg Wallace, Partner Manager at Rocketspark. She knows what looks good but always puts more thought into it – what will it do for the client, how is it going to be used, what’s the marketing message? And she’s not precious – she knows where her skills are and is happy to work with other partners to get things done.” Crisp Graphics has also just been nominated for the Orakei Business Awards in the category of Customer Service Excellence for a Business or Professional Service, demonstrating that Tonia’s commitment to customer service is paying off. Tonia, who’s worked independently for over 15 years but launched the Crisp Graphics a decade ago, is an Ellerslie local and for the last few years, has built a real reputation as the ‘go-to’ graphic designer in the area.
“We moved to Ellerslie about five years ago and absolutely love being part of the community. It’s got a real community feel, so it’s cool to be able to work and socialise with other locals, who I bump into in the Village,” shares Tonia. For Tonia, whose focus is on building relationships, living locally to her clients has some real benefits. “There’s a lot of trust when working with other locals – you’re pretty accountable when you bump into them in the local café or see them around the place,” Tonia explains. “That’s why reputation is so important – people talk. NZ is small, Auckland is smaller, and Ellerslie’s even smaller again!” However, even more important than that trust is the ability to understand clients. “For me, design is about asking the right questions and really listening to my clients, figuring out what they want to achieve. I get a real understanding of clients and what makes them tick to the point where I can read their minds in a way. “I’ve always been quite balanced between the left and right sides of my brain, which I think is really

important. I’m not just a creative, I’m also very much a systems person. I think that good mix of creativity and organisational skills mean that I take quite a logical approach to understanding how people will actually use a website or interact with branding. “Design is about making things work well, not just look great. I help business owners tell their story and communicate their vision, mission, and values through considered design of their brands, packaging, and websites – I absolutely love to work with small businesses with huge ambitions.” How Ellerslie Village rebranded an entire neighbourhood Given Ellerslie Business Association’s position as a local business representative, it is unsurprising that they chose to work with a local designer when it came to rebrand. What is perhaps a little more unusual is how it came about. “Tonia got in touch to be an associate member and we ended up needing some fairly basic graphic design – I believe a poster or Christmas catalogue,” explains Ellerslie Town Centre Manager Megan Darrow.
Thrilled with the result, they returned to Tonia with another job – only for her to push back. “Tonia came back and said that we were wanting to talk to a wider audience than our current brand was able to – so in the bigger picture we decided it would be better to rebrand.” With the website needing an update, the timing was perfect. It was time to do it properly, once and for all. A vibrant village with much to offer in terms of business opportunities, a tight-knit community, shopping and eateries, Tonia and Megan quickly established that original Ellerslie Business Association brand needed to be all-encompassing, with a visual brand that reflected a thriving community. Tonia led a rebranding exercise that meant not only a new visual brand, but also a whole new name – Ellerslie Village. “We’ve always been referred to as Ellerslie Village,” shares Megan. “The way we work is like a small village – we have close connections with schools and our community groups.” Working in collaboration with Megan, Tonia designed collateral that extended from logo and brand
strategy (including the five subbrands) to business cards, letterhead files, street flags, moveable banners, town signage, and the new Ellerslie Village website. The results have been incredible. “People love it. Our other brand had been used for so many things and just didn’t give us any direction. Now, we have a brand to anchor ourselves around in terms of identity; it makes our strategy and marketing easier because we have so much more direction” The key to creating a strong brand that resonated with locals? Working with a local designer. “It was important for us to have someone who could understand what is special about Ellerslie. Tonia came up with ‘discover and connect’ as the tagline – it wasn’t something we could describe, it was just something she understood about the area. “To us, she isn’t just a graphic designer. She’s not just looking at it from a logo perspective, she’s overseeing and understanding the whole business and what we do, and translating that into how it works for all our marketing.” 25
STEAM AT ELLERSLIE SCHOOL STEAM is the latest educational approach which combines the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics to solve real-life problems through hands-on experiences and design processes. At Ellerslie School we have embraced the approach in order to help prepare our students for the future. STEAM promotes innovative mindsets as well as the ability to problem solve - skills our younger generations will need to succeed in the 21st century and beyond. There is a global shortage of people, particularly females, going into STEAM based careers. Our students will be our future engineers, scientists, problem solvers and innovators of technology. STEAM at Ellerslie School incorporates the five learning areas by offering student-driven, problem based learning. Our students take note of their surrounding environment and community to identify potential issues that could be solved. Problem solving and design processes are used to expand our student’s
creative thinking so that they are able to think outside the box when they are coming up with solutions. We then carry out prototyping and make the designs where possible. Recently, our senior students identified a need to raise money for a charity and so they went through a creative thinking process to come up with ways to fundraise. It was decided that we would hold a small carnival for the younger students to enjoy. We then designed, made prototypes and ultimately built wooden carnival games that could be used on the big day. The students encountered lots of problems they had to solve along the way while developing practical hands-on skills that will serve them well in the future. Marketing was done by the students to promote the carnival and the day was a great success. Another example of our recent STEAM sessions includes students learning about the digestive system and its role in the human body. The students are designing healthy snacks that they could make at home that promote gut

Well our Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall just gets better and better!
Then this was followed by an interesting discussion with Alan Buribayev who had conducted the amazing concert in the Auckland Town Hall the previous evening. Among other things he was full of praise for our orchestra. Both their skill and willingness to accept the small tweeks each conductor brings with his interpretation of the music to be played.
Sara Lee from South Korea played the ordinary upright piano in the hall making it sound like a full concert grand. It was a magnificent performance. International pianists have a problem not faced by other soloists in that they

health therefore improving immunity. We have also looked at the trashbots being developed by Urban Rivers to be used in the Chicago River. The students designed their own trashbots that could be used in our community and looked at the idea of gamification - a way of promoting participation by adding a gaming element. This project incorporated the use of Sphero robots and the students had to use their newly learned programming skills to be successful in our classroom trashbot challenge. STEAM provides endless opportunities for our students to develop knowledge and skills that will enable them to be successful citizens in a rapidly changing world. From hands-on practical skills to creative design thinking and processes, our students are learning to not only consume technology, but to be creators of it too. you are a visitor or $15 if you are a member. Membership is only $35 per year and apart from meaning you will receive a programme of events every 6 months, you are supporting our fabulous orchestra because most of the money we raise goes directly to them. The committee and even some of the artists and interviewees donate their time so the administration costs are as low as we can keep them. Our orchestra is a jewel in Auckland’s crown and we should show we are proud of it. Man does not live by sport alone! The Chinese Medicine Healing Centre Through the traditional healing methods of Chinese Medicine, the Healing Centre in Ellerslie Village offers treatments for many ailments and illnesses. Dr. Peilin Li brings over thirty years of experience in Traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, including strategies for the reduction of stress and stress related pain.
The practice of Traditional Chinese medicine follows the belief, that the stress is an imbalance of the bodys Yin and Yang, and this is where Dr Li uses these methods to treat the patient according to their body conditions and to re-balance the bodys Yin and Yang. The Traditional Chinese Medical Healing centre is new to the Ellerslie Village and is located down the ally-way at 123 Ellerslie Highway.
He often sees patients who have emotional stress symptoms such as an inability to concentrate, poor judgment, seeing only the negative, anxious or racing thoughts, constant worrying, along with moodiness, irritability, or anger and feeling overwhelmed. Stress pain can often include aches and pains, diarrhea or constipation, nausea, dizziness, chest pain, rapid heart rate, loss of sex drive, frequent colds or flu.
“Our approach to patient healing includes methods of acupuncture and chinese medicine, and can help with nearly any health concern, as the ideology is centred in treated the whole person. Acupuncture looks to restore balance within a person, and rather than focusing on treating symptoms.”

A TIME FOR THANKS GIVING
As we draw near to the end of 2018 we naturally either collapse in an end of year and Christmas function exhaustion or spend time fantasising about the summer holidays which are just around the corner! In the lives of many of us it has been a challenging year, and we have seen this in the media as well as in the lives of those around us. A new government has seen through their first year, various politicians have faced hard times, and mental health has taken centre stage. However it is important that we take time to reflect on the year, and not just on the challenges it brought us, but on the things that have happened which we are thankful for. The American tradition of thanksgiving is a brilliant one as it calls us to take a day out to focus on the things we are thankful for and celebrate them. Christmas is a perfect time for us to adopt this tradition. Christmas is a time of huge celebration as it is when God came to Earth as Jesus to give us hope, hope for something more, a future of peace, love and rest. This hope can be seen in part in the things which we are thankful for this year.
30
At Christ Church we are thankful to God for holding our first Space course and seeing the mums and babies on it grow in confidence and love. We are also thankful for successful fundraising for our building restoration project, and the support of the Ellerslie community in this (the last major funding application will go in early next year and we look to start mid-late 2019!). Lastly we are thankful for the community here in Ellerslie, the people we see here everyday and the wonderful work going into making Ellerslie a great and exciting place to be. So whatever your 2018 has been like, what are you thankful for this year? God bless you and merry Christmas!!

ELLERSLIE THEATRICAL SOCIETY Another year ends and your local community theatre has just ended its last successful show for 2018, The Lady in The Van by Alan Bennett. A true example of the “Magic of Theatre”. Many of you saw the film and enjoyed the experience of seeing it on stage with the restrictions that imposed. Unfortunately, by the time you read this we will have had our “Taster Evening” when we showcased our 2019 programme. This would have been of particular interest to those who are responsible for organizing theatre groups, raising funds for your chosen charity. If you wish to use the theatre as a fundraiser, we will sell you all 90 seats at a considerable discount and you may sell them for your chosen price. We will supply tea, coffee and biscuits, the play and a cash bar will be available. If you wish to supply more attractive food for interval, which will allow you to increase your ticket price, we will plate and serve it. You may also run a raffle if you wish. You will have a fun evening and raise between $1000 and $2000 for your cause with the minimum of effort. Our first play for 2019 is in March, The Bach by Stephen Sinclair. After drifting apart for several years two middle aged brothers meet at the family bach in Coromandel to find that in the meantime the council has erected a public toilet block right next door. This does not go down well. In June, we are presenting Things I Know To Be True by Andrew Bovell. Bob and Fran have 4 children for whom they have toiled to make sure they had the chance to grasp
all the chances life had to offer. We meet them as they return for a funeral and reveal the twists and turns of their lives. In August we have Ellerslie’s Festival of One Act Plays. Every two years we host this festival of plays written or directed by people who have not seen their work on stage before. The six plays are presented over two nights, each play having 4 evening and 1 matinee performance. These are always very interesting and varied evenings. In November, Enchanted April by Matthew Barber. Four diverse women rent a villa in Tuscany for a quiet summer holiday. This is a heart-warming story of 4 women realizing the deficiencies in their lives and finding hope and love in the tranquil countryside. There are many aspects to community theatre and many ways in which you join in. The most visible people are the actors on stage but even the most famous actors needed support from wardrobe, makeup, properties, set builders to enable them to perform. Then there is the Front of House people who need to care for the all-important audience. If you feel you would like to be part of this fun organization either visit the website www. ellerslietheatre.co.nz or ring Rona 5253336 and you will be welcomed. In the meantime, come to Ellerslie on the 2nd December to the Santa Parade and see our “Angels Rejoice” float. We wish you all a Happy Xmas and look forward to seeing you and your friends at “The Stables” theatre during 2019.

ELLERSLIE COMBINED PROBUS
ELLERSLIE TAI CHI
PROBUS! WHAT IS IT? A group of men and women who have reached the age when, in theory, they can retire from the working world and sit back and enjoy a life of leisure. In fact, some of us miss the daily contact with fellow workers and cast about for a place to meet other people. Probus groups exist to promote fun, friendship and fellowship for each other. They do not, as a group, raise funds for good causes although some members also belong to other groups who do. Probians are gathered to have fun and keep alert by mixing with different people, listening to interesting speakers and going out, both within and beyond the confines of Auckland city, to places they would not get around to visiting on their own. WHY SHOULD I JOIN? We are a friendly group with an expanding membership with no limits of any kind. We always suggest you should come to a couple of meetings and outings before you actually pay the enormous subscription of $15 per year, plus a one-off joining fee, and become one of us. We meet in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall at 10a.m. on the third Friday of each month from February to November. We may have had our last meeting for this year when you read this. We also have small groups like the group who meet in the Christ Church hall in Ladies Mile at 9.30am every Thursday to play board games, Mah Jong, Scrabble, Rummicub etc. Strictly noncompetitive, just for fun! Although Probus organizes this you do not have to be a Probian to join in. Cost is $3 per morning including morning tea. Then there is the writers club who write short notes about interesting things in their lives, childhood memories etc. The idea being that their grandchildren may read them and compare grandma’s childhood with their own. There is also the stitching group which has only recently formed and meets on a Monday. They knit or stitch or do handwork and natter! There is no virtue in staying home, on your own, waiting for the floor to need sweeping again. Come out and enjoy yourself! If you would like any further information ring Rona 579 7605. In the meantime we wish you all a Merry Xmas and we look forward to meeting you in the New Year.
BALANCE & TAI CHI Our Ellerslie Tai Chi class is focused on Preventing Falls by improving balance and mobility using simple Tai Chi principles. As a community we need these classes. Alison Thomas began the ‘Falls Prevention’ Tai Chi class in Ellerslie in 2005 with the ACC programme. She can help anyone to improve and maintain balance. This year ACC started an initiative called ‘Live Stronger for Longer’. To find out more about this initiative and to search for approved classes within the community visit the website – www.livestronger.org.nz . Alison is now an ACC approved Community Strength and Balance provider. People of any age can practice Tai Chi and get benefits. Tai Chi can be practiced sitting or standing. If you are unsure about beginning Tai Chi then consult your Doctor. Doctors are usually very happy to recommend it. Let us all become ‘Stronger for Longer’! Better balance reduces the risk of falling in older adults by 47%. Better balance may also help to avoid a serious injury if you do fall. Falls are the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for both men and woman. Falls are mainly caused by: muscle weakness, poor balance or vision, lack of confidence, and the effect of medication. Tai Chi strengthens your body and mind and reduces tension. The flowing movements help you become more flexible, stronger and leave you feeling energized yet tranquil.
Ellerslie classes are Wednesdays from 10.30 am- 11.30 am, at Leicester Hall, 20 Findlay. From 12.30-1.30pm Wednesdays a second class is held at St Philips Church Hall, 92 St Heliers Bay Rd. Contact Alison: on 021 528 744 Email: alison.taichi@gmail.com
