We are excited to welcome to Mr Tanaka’s Yakitori – located between Mexico and Union Post opening in the next few months, a welcome addition to the Ellerslie food scene.

ime flies. Another year has begun. And just like that its 2020!

Happy belated New Year. Our beautiful summer continues and it certainly feels like it’s going to be a long one.

You are probably wondering about what is happening to the fountain in the square? Small repairs have been undertaken but it needs a large amount of work required to bring it back to the way it used to operate. Please bear with us as we are working with the local board to progress this as soon as possible.

Last year’s Santa Parade was again hugely successful. We had a great turnout with several new entries. Thank you to those who volunteered to help put this event together. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our funders, The Orakei Local Board, Trillian Trust and Mt Wellington Trust. Without their support we could not hold this event.

As always you can find copies of the Ellerslie Village Magazine in businesses throughout the village and in boxes outside Little Luscious and Bakers Delight.

The 12 Days of Christmas promotion was also a great success – there were over 1000 entries, we enjoyed fantastic support from retailers and the local community and wonderful prizes donated by local businesses, we hope this encouraged the community to shop local with all the fantastic offerings we have.

Lastly, please remember to shop local and help grow our wonderful village.

Save the Date - Saturday 28th March, 1-2pm for Ellerslie Neighbours Day, followed by an Ellerslie Village Clean up hosted by local MP Denise Lee. A great opportunity to meet neighbours and new friends. Further details to be announced shortly.

ell by now the summer novelty is wearing off and I’m actually enjoying the days that are slightly cooler rather than being desperate for sunshine. For many of us, the reflections that came with the new year are now lost in the reality of everyday routine. Most resolutions when they are boiled down come to things that make us happier – whether that be being healthier, spending more time with your loved ones or putting in more effort to pursue your goals. Another important component in happiness is feeling like you are part of a community, and even small talk with strangers makes a difference. Behavioural scientist Nicholas Epley recently conducted a study with Chicago commuters assigning half of them to make small talk with their neighbours and others not to. Even those who said they didn’t want to interact with others reported being much happier when they did. He concluded that “People could improve their own well-being and that of others by simply being more social with strangers, trying to create connections where one might otherwise choose isolation”.

In this spirit we invite you to join us on the 28th March, 1pm at fountain square to meet your neighbours and community groups that help make Ellerslie the special place it is. We will also have a sausage sizzle, games, and a plant swap and we invite you to ‘bring a plate’ to share if you wish, but feel free to just bring yourself! The community day will run from 1-2pm and will be followed by the Ellerslie Village Clean up at 2pm hosted by our local MP Denise Lee – a great chance to do good for our village and continue the conversations with new friends. new year and the beginning of a new decade. I trust you had a great Auckland summer and your batteries are recharged for what will be a busy year with new opportunities, new goals and so much more! It’s neat seeing Ellerslie come to life again following the holiday period with many enjoying the outside space near Little Luscious. The Yakitori Bar as our latest edition is also bound to bring much excitement. We have a busy Parliamentary year ahead, particularly with the confirmation of the General Election in September, and I’m once again looking forward to representing your views both in Maungakiekie and Wellington. As your representative, my focus is guided by your needs. This year I’ll continue to place strong emphasis on the following local key areas: •C rime and safety. After uncovering a huge spike in vehicle break-ins at One Tree Hill since the summit was pedestrianised, I’ll be working with our local police and calling on the Tūpuna Maunga Authority to urgently address the need for security measures that keep our community safe. I’m also continuing our Coffee with a Cop sessions with local Community Constable Don Allan. After hearing chatter about suspicious behaviour in our streets, these timely meetings will allow you to raise any concerns about crime and safety. See below for our upcoming coffee dates! ransport and Congestion. This includes keeping Auckland •T Transport accountable and pushing for safety improvements to the Ellerslie Village pedestrian crossing and the Robert Street/Main Highway intersection. One particular issue that keeps popping up with my office is the dangerousness of Rockfield Road’s pedestrian crossing outside

One Tree Hill College. I’ve been working closely with the school and talking with Auckland Transport about making improvements. I’m pleased AT have finally listened to our plight and will upgrade the crossing to a raised design, which will make a huge difference in the number of daily near misses our families’ children experience. Public consultation for this will open April/May- watch this space! Finally as Neighbours Day approaches, I’m hosting my annual Ellerslie Village Clean-up and would love for you to take part. Come and celebrate our neighbourhood and enjoy some refreshments on Saturday 28th March, 2-3pm. Ellerslie Village and Residents Association will also be hosting a meet and greet with local community groups, so this is an afternoon not to be missed!

reetings Ellerslie, I hope everyone had a good break over the summer and are ready to start the new year focused and energised. I enjoyed being with the Ellerslie community at my first Ellerslie Santa Parade and thanks to Ellerslie Rotary Club for letting me ride with them. I look forward to joining the club at their various meetings. I also met with the Ellerslie Residents Association executive at their invitation to Christmas drinks at Charlies, where it was good to hear about their connections to Ellerslie. We are going into Annual Plan phase here at Council so the Orakei Local Board will be running numerous public engagements to hear from communities about their aspirations for the area. I look forward to being at these and connecting with you there. On top of being your ward Councillor, I have been given extra responsibilities at Council this term; I am the Deputy Chair of the Planning Committee which is responsible for infrastructure strategy, transportation, the Unitary Plan, the Auckland Plan, regeneration and redevelopment projects, built and cultural heritage, and housing policy. I am also Deputy Chair of the Regulatory Committee which is responsible for bylaws. At present there are some major legislative reforms happening which will affect all parts of Auckland. Auckland Council are submitting on these reforms and I am part of the political working groups providing Council’s response to the review of the Resource Management Act and system and the Urban Development Bill, which provides for the powers of the Kainga Ora urban development agency. Locally, I have received constituent queries about transport and I can report back that one of the issues has resulted in Auckland Transport confirming that they plan to install a raised speed table at the corner of Kalmia St outside the train station in response to constituent safety concerns. We are still working on issues raised with me by Sir Edmund Hillary Village and the issues raised about bike parking at Ellerslie station are with the Local Board. I have seen comments on Facebook about car break ins at certain streets in Ellerslie and have raised this in my regular meetings with the NZ Police area commander for their assistance. Please feel free to contact me to raise any concerns that I can assist with as your Councillor. Josephine.bartley@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz 0212875599

llerslie is a great town center with heaps going for it, in it and around it. Nowhere is this more apparent than through the local board grant process, because there is always something new and exciting from the Ellerslie area. This time we approved a grant for the Ellerslie Toy Library based on Harrison Road. The grant money will go towards buying toy to help satisfy the libraries growing number of members. We also approved a grant which has helped bring the World Stamp Exhibition NZ2020 to the Ellerslie Event Centre, the theme is maritime heritage and water which is a great theme for New Zealand, and the event is expected to bring 3-4,000 visitors to the area. As you can see grants can be awarded to a wide range of ideas and projects, so I encourage the community to keep an eye on the Ōrākei Local Board Facebook page (Facebook.com/orakeiLB) for opportunities to apply for grants, some are quick response and others offer upwards of $10,000 which can make a real difference. So, if your school, group, church, or idea needs some financial assistance, the grant process might just be your answer. As we settle into 2020 things certainly aren’t slowing down, there is so much to do, so much to talk about and I look forward to hearing from the community during our Local Board Plan 2020 consultation which gets underway in March. Input into the boards plans for the next three years needs to be directly influenced by our community, and we will be doing all we can to ensure that everyone gets a chance to have their voice heard. More on that next time. Take care and enjoy the last of our summer weather.

santa parade - 2019 The Ellerslie Santa Parade was once again blessed with sunshine! It is always wonderful to see the community come together and celebrate the day, thanks to everyone who came along. This parade wouldn’t be possible with the help of so many in our community who work to make it happen especially the Ōrākei Local Board, Trillian Trust and the Mt Wellington Foundation for funding our parade. reetings from the Ellerslie Residents Association!

We’re a group of local residents who believe in giving back to the community which has given us so much, by helping make this Auckland’s most liveable suburb. How do we do that? By generating ideas, organising events, and connecting people to spark projects and initiatives which benefit everyone. Our recent activities include: • Advocating for installation of motorway sound barriers • Launching the Ellerslie Songbird Project www.ellersliesongbird.co.nz/join-us/ • Engaging with Council on improved Michaels Avenue Reserve path lighting • Advocating for improved footpaths and pedestrian crossings • Gathering and sharing info about the history of Ellerslie and current initiatives On a personal note, my name is Glen McCabe, and I’m very happy to have been elected as Chair of the ERA late last year. I’m from the Waikato originally, but my wife and I have lived on Amy St since mid2012, and have a daughter who is loving Year 3 at Ellerslie School. My main interests are enhancement of public spaces, particularly green spaces, and safe pedestrian and cycle transport. I’m also happy to introduce a new member of the ERA committee, Jeanine Devaroyan. Jeanine’s family has lived in Ellerslie for several

generations and so she brings a wealth of experience and passion for the area and community to the ERA. With her kids at local schools and as a teacher herself, she brings organisation and knowledge to her new role as ERA Secretary. Welcome on board Jeanine! We’re also very fortunate to have members of the ERA committee with a diversity of interests, and the more of your opinions we get, the more we can do! Please get in touch at www.facebook.com/ EllerslieResidentsAssociation/ or ellerslieresidents@gmail.com The ERA is looking forward to a big 2020. Our first major initiative is a public meeting on Monday 23 March for community consultation about the Ōrākei Local Board Plan. This is a big-picture exercise for the long-term vision of our area, so it’s time to dream big! Think about what Ellerslie needs for the next 5, 10, 20 years. How do our environment, infrastructure and facilities need to be enhanced to cope with and benefit from increased population? Let’s work together to tighten the communication between the Local Board and local residents. Think about the environment, local community facilities, arts/culture/events, connectivity and transport, heritage, community empowerment, town centres, developing the local economy… what makes Ellerslie special and how can we make it even better over the long term? You can also have your say online at www.akhaveyoursay.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz/orakeiplan, but it’s always more fun to be heard in person. Please bring your ideas and passion to Leicester Hall, on 23 March from 7pm! See you there! 11

make, give, learn It feels like a while ago now, but we all had a great time at the last workshop we held making festive wreaths before Christmas. There were some absolutely stunning creations and we hope you enjoyed both the creating process and having them in your home. We also hope that those who attended our Herb your Enthusiasm event in September are still harvesting your produce – I’ve found the tomatoes amazing! Our next event coming up is on Wednesday 1st April, 7.30pm at the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall and we will be making Easter Centrepieces – either with real eggs or felt eggs, the choice will be yours.

ellerslie song bird

I

t is an exciting time for us because it is nearly our first birthday and we have almost 100 traps out in the local Ellerslie area. We had our first trap hand out on Saturday 8th February. It was great to meet some new faces and hand out more traps. We will be holding another trap hand out morning at the start of April. Change is constant and animals evolve to survive in their surroundings, their ecosystems. We cannot return to the past to how things were but if we do nothing we will lose variety and what is unique to New Zealand. It isn't just our birds that will suffer it is the trees that birds pollinate. Birds are an important part of various ecosystems because they keep insects down, move seeds, pollinate and transfer nutrients from sea to land. Strong and sustainable ecosystems rely on positive relationships. When one species dominates an ecosystem, like rats, the balance is changed and could lead to long term damage such as extinction. Rats reproduce at such a rapid rate compared to our birds. When we compare the reproduction rate of a rat to a fantail the numbers are concerning as rats can have between 12 and 48 bucks a year whereas fantails will have between 4 and 25 chicks from August to February. The numbers are concerning on their own but we also need to remember the food chain, rats are an enemy to fantails and will eat eggs as well as chicks. The predator-free movement is huge and could be viewed as an expensive fantasy for New Zealand but there is also a huge cost if we do nothing. This cost is not just financial but also our culture, our heritage, and our wellbeing. This quote is from the January/ February New Zealand Geographic by Editor Rebekah White:

HOW TO GET INVOLVED You can get involved with Ellerslie Songbird Project by visiting our website, facebook page or emailing us. We promote all our trap hand out events on our facebook page. EMAIL ellersliesongbirdproject@gmail.com FACEBOOK PAGE Ellerslie Songbird Project WEBSITE www.ellersliesongbird.co.nz OUR SUPPORTERS We are really grateful for the support and funding for our project that we receive from ĹŒrÄ kei Local Board, Ellerslie Residents Association and Ellerslie Village. Without their help we would not be able to provide the traps for free. We would also like to recognise Eugene Yamamoto and Joanne Simpson from Barfoot and Thompson for their ongoing support.

"The idea of Predator Free 2020 can be simplified in this way: Something is going to die. It will either be possums, mustelids, and three species of rat, or it will be most of New Zealand's native birds and an unknown number of plants and invertebrates. You have to choose. Inaction is a choice."

From designing the Ellerslie Community Fruit and Vegetable sharing stand (complete with architectural drawings) to literally spending days cutting wood for the Ellerslie – Make, Give, Learn, Herb your Enthusiasm event. She also set up and tends to the Ellerslie Community Garden beside the Ellerslie War Memorial Community Hall, simply for the enjoyment of others. We love these fun sneakers from Coko for adding flair and style, perfect for autumn days and beyond.

Though the pies are spectacular, on a hot summers day we crave something a bit lighter. The prawn rice paper rolls from Richoux Patisserie hit the spot with fresh fragrant herbs, crunchy lettuce and juicy prawns.

OBSERVATIONS OF KINDNESS FROM THE HEART ELLERSLIE. In reflection of 2019 from my little goldfish bowl of a flower shop in the middle of the village where all rest or congregate to chat, pick up scripts, pat Daphanae and most important care for each other. I heard the most glorious kindness in December and other months but Christmas showed me the Ellerslie community really does have big heart and most importantly it goes into action. I heard locals go by asking if each human was going to be OK for Christmas. Did they need anything? The flower shop was the drop off point to redistribute gifts for the elderly from the elderly each

one more careful of the next. Paying forward flowers anonymously to a grieving mum. The melting of the hearts of a big burley young man when dog and humans get together. Teenage kids showing compassion and help over the treacherous crossing. The junior buskers cleaned up! Daffy was a large recipient of treats! … hilarious. Ellerslie you are generous in every sense, don’t go changing! January was the same, the garden a focus the care from all is so delightful even in the heat! Thank you. Truly a compassionate and generous neighbourhood, I am so happy to be a part of it. Kindness and generosity is in all corners.

XXXX seasonal clean up The annual spring clean, that can happen any season of the year, often reveals items we no longer need that are highly sought after by others in the community or further afield. You can donate the things you no longer need to organisations that help people in real need. Donations of wool yarn (or wool blended with other natural fibres) and cotton fabric will be gratefully received by Little Sprouts (www.littlesproutsnz.org) who craft and distribute baby packs for families in need.

mobile phones

glasses

Mobile phones contain heavy metals which are toxic in landfills as they leach into soil and groundwater when dumped. Old mobile phones can be donated to Re:mobile, by dropping your phone off at any of the 400 locations nationwide. To find the location nearest you visit www.remobile.org.nz/drop-off-locator/ or take your phone to the Sustainable Coastline’s Education Centre at the corner of Beaumont and Madden Streets, Wynyard Quarter, Auckland between 10am and 5pm daily. A percentage of the profits from donated phones are given to charity. Before you donate your phone, leave the battery in, but remember to disconnect it from any cloud services, remove the SIM card, and switch it off.

In just about every home there’s a pair of prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses, or frames that are no longer in use. These will be well received by Volunteer Ophthalmic Services Overseas (VOSO), a New Zealand charity working in the Pacific Islands. You can donate unwanted spectacles to the Lions Club, there are several clubs throughout New Zealand who collect them as part of the Lions Recycle for Sight Programme in which they collect, process, and record the prescription lens before delivering them to VOSO, to be given away for free.

clothes & furniture Clean clothes suitable for office wear that are in good condition can be donated to the Mercy Hospice shop at 188 Ladies Mile, Ellerslie, Dress for Success (www.auckland.dressforsuccess. org) or other charity stores nearby such as the Salvation Army at 691 Mt Albert Road, the SPCA shop Mt Albert Road or at 217 Onehunga Mall, or St Vincent de Paul at 345 Onehunga Mall. he Friends of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra wish you all a very happy and prosperous 2020.

Our fabulous orchestra gave us a wonderful concert, which was broadcast live to the whole of New Zealand, the night before St. Valentines day to open the 2020 season. We, the ‘Friends” followed this with our first Meet The Artist Friday morning in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall, which also proved to be a great success upholding our reputation of being ‘the best show in town’. Our musical item was contributed by Jenny Raven who has been a major part of the percussion section of the orchestra for some 30 years. It was amazing to hear her making music with percussion instruments alone. She also let us in to the intricasies of actually striking the various instruments and the different types of sound the wooden sticks, leather mallets of varying sizes, and brushes produce. We then had the delightful Romanian born pianist, Alexandra Dariescu, who had played Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto No.1 with such skill and passion that the audience burst into spontaneous applause at the end of the first movement before allowing her to continue with the 2nd and 3rd movements, to speak with us. She told us about her career and how she had always wanted to play the piano and after lessons with skilled teacher she made her debut with an orchestra at 9 years old. She also generously spared time to share lunch with us which, of course, meant that several people had the opportunity to speak with her. These mornings really are entertaining and informative.

ALL ALL AB ABOUT ABOUT YOU YOU

There are some important things to bear in mind • Engage an Adviser. Don’t go online unless you have years of experience in the industry. Insurance is a complicated product and although the products often have the same names some will pay at the first signs of a problem, even if it’s partially, and others won’t pay until you are on your death bed, if at all. Contrary to popular belief most Financial Advisers are highly trained experts in their fields who have your best interests at heart. There are exceptions of course but that’s the same in any industry. Ask them for testimonials from their existing clients, this is the best way to find out how good they are. Claims stories help too. Oh, and make sure that they are members of a professional Dealer Group like Newpark, Kepa, or Financial Advice NZ.

THAT WAS A CLOSE CALL Bill McGavock shares his close call with a near fatal heart attack and what was going through his mind during it. “I’m on the operating table, it’s a bit cold with the stainless steel at my back and those lead sheets over my legs are bloody heavy! This place is really bright, and it smells of disinfectant. There’s a hell of a lot of people in here, two on my right and that nice lady who met me at the door is on the left now. She’s injecting things into the lure in my left arm, wow that’s quite a few drugs going in there, I’ve never heard those names before. Still they must be working I’m not as nervous as when I first got in here, thank goodness. There’s also about 6 other people here, I wonder what they all do? The Russian sounding guy is talking now. What does he mean by a major lesion in the artery? What is a lesion, I thought that was a cut? Oh no! I hope the artery isn’t cut they said that was a major problem! Oh hell, I wish I’d done something about this on Friday when I first felt the pain in my chest. I knew I was having a heart attack! I know the symptoms; I should do I’ve done enough first aid courses! Surely I’m too young to have this happen to me? I’m pretty fit, I walk for an hour in Cornwall Park most weekdays. I’m a bit overweight but not too fat surely? Lynn feeds me healthy food and I don’t smoke. Idiot! Of course, it can happen to you! Lynn’s friends husband had a major heart attack and he was in his early 40s. What if I’m one of the few complications from this procedure, a serious heart attack on the table or even a stroke? What about Lynn, the girls and the grandkids? Shit what an idiot I am!

The insurance! Is there enough? If the worst happens I guess there probably is but I should have more? If I have a stroke or massive heart attack there won’t be enough! I’m the “Expert” with this stuff I should know better. I know I’ve got the right insurance company but I’m sure I don’t have enough cover. I was going to add more when we got back from Italy. Too late now………” That was Tuesday the 7th of January 2020. I was extremely lucky. I had a heart attack and one of my arteries was 90% blocked but they were able to put a stent in. There’s more heart disease but the doctors feel that with the medication I’m now on I should be OK. I must be careful about keeping my weight down and staying fit as well. Why am I sharing this with you? It’s because I don’t want you to go through what I did on that table. I thought I was going to die or be seriously disabled, and I knew that despite working in the industry I didn’t have enough of the right kind of insurance. Do you? Are you sure? I want you to do me a favour. Go to whatever form or diary you use, paper or electronic. Set an event to contact your Financial Adviser and review your insurances. Do it now!

• Use a good, independent Financial Adviser. One that belongs to a big enough company so that they can advocate for you if the insurance company pushes back at claim time. This is also important to protect you if your Adviser leaves the industry in the future. • Ensure that the Adviser has agencies with multiple reputable insurance companies. That way they will be advising you on the best option for you, and not the best option for them. This is where banks fall short too. They usually only have one option and the quality of their products is often inferior to specialist insurance companies. Pricing can be an issue too. • A sk a lot of questions and make sure that you fully understand what is being offered and whether it is the best option for you. The Adviser is there to advise you, not to “sell” you something. • It’s equally important to review existing protection. Insurance is a competitive industry that is constantly evolving. Your existing cover could be inferior, or you could be paying too much. If you don’t have an Adviser or you want a second opinion, I would be happy to refer you to a good Adviser, we currently have 17 at Assetwise, or I’ll help you myself if you wish. You can contact me at bill@assetwise.nz or call/ text me on 021 2999 741. And guys, if you think you have symptoms that could be a heart attack go to your doctor or the hospital immediately. Your and your family’s future happiness could depend on it!

On the fourth Friday of each month we go somewhere of interest, in February we will board a Red Boat and sail up the harbour to Riverhead. Rather than climb the hill to the pub we will have a picnic lunch on board while we float around the upper harbour. There is a possibility that in March we will visit the historical Puhoi pub which is for sale so this may be the last chance to see it as it is now.

appy New Year to you all and we hope Christmas and the holidays went well. Your Probus club has already had a very happy picnic afternoon in one of our members shady garden. This was a very auspicious beginning to what we expect will be another successful year with increased membership. Remember we meet in the Ellerslie War Memorial hall at 10am every 3rd Friday of the month. Everyone is welcome particularly people who have recently come to live in the Ellerslie area. We are a combined club so welcome men or women, single or married/partners, of any ethnicity. The only qualification you need is to be free on the 3rd Friday morning of each month and have a desire to meet other people who live in Ellerslie.

As well as these basic activities we have several smaller groups we organise. We have a writers group where members meet in one of their homes and share stories of an episode in their childhood or later life. The original idea was to record incidents for your grandchildren so they could compare their childhood with grandma’s. There is also every Thursday morning in the Christ Church hall in Ladies Mile a group meets to play board games, Rummi Scrabble, upword etc. KimCub, Hampson Real Estate Professional You do not need to be member to come to these mornings. Anyone is 09 520 welcome and $3 pays the rent and morning tea.8876

Each month we have someone to talk to us about a wide variety of things. For instance in February we will have a beekeeper telling us about beekeeping and harvesting the honey. In march we have someone talking to us about life in Uzbekistan and in April we will have a group quiz with prizes for the winning group.

Homemade Sausage Rolls

www.vanessabaxter.co.nz

20 ELLERSLIE VILLAGE MAGAZINE

Homemade Sausage Rolls 1 red onion

Fresh nutmeg

2 Tbs olive oil

Ready rolled puff pastry sheets

6 sage leaves, finely chopped 1 kilo, best quality pork sausages ½ cup breadcrumbs

1 egg Heat oven to 200°C Peel and finely dice onion

Heat the oil in a frypan on a medium to low heat. Cook the diced onion for 15 minutes until really soft. Add in the sage leaves and cook for a further minute. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Meantime, slit the skins of the sausages and pop the meat out. (if your kids are helping they may like to squeeze the sausage meat out the ends) Put the sausage meat, onions, herbs and breadcrumbs into a large bowl. Use a microplane or the small holes of a grater and add in a dash of freshly grated nutmeg. Use your hands to mix all the ingredients together. (use gloves if you wish) Cut the squares of pre rolled puff pastry into long rectangles. Roll the sausage meat loosely into long sausage shapes and lay along the centre of your rectangle.

Lightly beat the egg and add a dash of water (or milk) and beat again. Use a pastry brush to brush the egg mixture over the exposed pastry edges. Lift one edge of pastry over the filling. Then lift the other edge of the pastry over the filling and allow it to overlap the first to form a seam. Turn over the sausage roll logs so that the seam is underneath. Cut the long rolls into the lengths you would prefer - cocktail or lunch size! Brush the tops of the sausage rolls with the rest of the egg mixture. Bake for 20 minutes or until cooked through (centres should be 71°C) Serve with homemade ketchup (or your own favourite version) Yummo!

SWIM WITH CONFIDENCE FREE TRIAL SWIMMING LESSON AT HILTON BROWN SWIMMING Are your children nervous around water? Do they run into the ocean squealing with joy or tentatively tiptoe in? The biggest hurdle when learning to swim is gaining confidence in the water. Once your confidence grows, your swimming technique improves in leaps and bounds. At Hilton Brown Swimming we know how instil that confidence. We have over 45 years’ experience teaching swimming in NZ and offer quality lessons from infants through to adults.

We focus on teaching correct swimming technique, so that children can feel confident in the water and can swim at least 400 metres comfortably. This helps to prepare children for any water sport they may chose. Children look forward to their swimming lessons at Hilton Brown Swimming because we make sure it’s an enjoyable experience. Our swimming teachers provide positive feedback and ensure everyone is happy in the pool.

elcome to another exciting year at One Tree Hill College. The year has already started very well with the release of an outstanding Education Review Office (ERO) Report about the college, and another big intake of Year 9 students, most of which are from our local community. The roll is now at capacity and our enrolment scheme is assisting us to prioritise families wishing to enrol children from our community. As ERO stated, “One Tree Hill College is a school that the community are proud to send their children to”. I am very proud to be able to inform our community that our 2019 NCEA results were outstanding, with over 85% of students achieving their NCEA. This, along with a very high percentage of students achieving merit and excellence endorsements in NCEA, continue to highlight the excellent teaching and learning taking place at One Tree Hill College. I would like to congratulate the many students who achieved so highly. To succeed at these levels are outstanding achievements and we are all very proud of these students. We have honoured these students at our annual Scholars Assembly with ‘Academic Excellence’ awards and challenge all other students to emulate their success this year. These wonderful results reflect the emphasis that we have placed on our college values and ‘Attitudes to Learning’ which are fundamental to student success. Students are focussed on academic achievement, and 2020 will see One Tree Hill College reach even greater heights following our outstanding successes last year.

Finally, I would like to congratulate our Head Prefect team for 2020. Our Head Students this year are Jessica McKnight and Iele Ieremia, who will be assisted by deputies Tegan Amani and Jarrett Ephraim Sanchez. They are all excellent young leaders who will serve our students, college and community very well. Following the excellent Education Review Office (ERO) report endorsing the college, this continues to be a great time to be involved with One Tree Hill College. We certainly have students with exceptional talent and it is wonderful to see them show such pride in the college. I look forward to the many successes which will occur throughout the year. Best Wishes, Nick Coughlin - Principal

ellerslie theatrical society Ellerslie Village Magazine contacted the Orakei Local Board regarding the Theatre’s comments and received the following response;

#

SAVEETS. Wishing you all a happy and prosperous New Year during which we ask you to consider our value as a local theatre in our community. Our future has become uncertain because our venue hire charges for Ellerslie War Memorial Hall have risen to an unsustainable level. Since 1989, when Ellerslie was still a borough with its own mayor, your theatre has operated from the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. We have paid a special discretionary rent because of the nature of our hire and the enhancement we brought to the general community. Since then we have produced some 120 plays covering a wide range of subjects and an increasing level of competence. When the boroughs were amalgamated into community boards under Auckland City, the building was managed by Maungakiekie Community Board, who valued our contribution to the local community and set our discretionary rent. Later, in the amalgamation into Auckland Council, the hall came under Maungakiekie Local Board who continued to value us and maintained our discretionary rent. When the boundaries subsequently changed, we came under Ōrākei Local Board. For a time, they continued to value us, particularly as we were, and still are, the only community theatre in the Ōrākei ward. With little notice, our annual rent went from around $11,000 per annum to $90,000 per annum reduced to 45,000 with the application of the general community grant. While we are able, by using all our reserves and some assistance from charitable grants, to pay the additional rent for last year, it means our future is uncertain. The income we generate is insufficient to meet the new rent and grant funds are always uncertain. We have spent many hours discussing this situation with Ōrākei Local Board with, so far, no satisfactory outcome.

Now we are asking for your help in the following ways. ome to see our next play Proof by David •C Auburn directed by Carl Drake, which opens on Thursday 12 March. Visit our website www.ellerslietheatre.co.nz, read about the play, and click on the iTicket symbol in the left column. •B ecome a member of ETS. Subscriptions are $20 for adults, $10 for seniors or students. Visit our website and click ‘Membership’ in the top menu. •P ost comments on our website, by clicking ‘saveETS’ in the top menu. Did ETS give you confidence to realise your desire to be on stage? Did we give you an opportunity to practice, learn or enhance your lighting and sound technical skills? – Or an opportunity to help with constructing or painting sets? – Or to learn generally how to go about mounting a show? – Or just to meet people and feel you are contributing positively to your community? Please let us know. Please also post your views on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, using the hashtag #saveETS. If you are a hall user, please consider that, if we leave, there will be no further assistance in the way of sound, microphones, lighting or seating, because we shall remove all our equipment. We do not know if Ōrākei Local Board plans to replace these to bring the Hall back up to spec as a functional performance space.

“It is simply not true to say the theatrical society is not valued or that it is not supported by the Local Board. Over the last five years alone the society has received $35,000 in grants to help sustain the business. Hundreds of council officer hours have been spent on working alongside society staff to suggest numerous ways of helping them reduce losses. It is misleading to say their “rent” is $45,000 when the amount they are charged to use the hall is a direct function of the hours they book it. For many years the society has block-booked days and days of hall space over long periods, only to not use the space. The society has not paid for these rentals and currently has unpaid rent totaling over $30,000, even after receiving generous rate-payer funded community grants, and having substantial cash reserves sitting in the bank. I don’t think this is fair on ratepayers. The Board does not have limitless grant funding and there are a multitude of community organisations that also deserve support. The Board would love to see, and will financially support, a strong, vibrant, wellrun theatrical offering that offers a range of performances from the avant-garde to popular family shows; performances that make good use of the excellent facility that is the War Memorial Hall. The Board is also looking at what it would take to make Ellerslie an “Arts Hub” for our board area, with the Memorial Hall as a vital piece of that infrastructure.” Scott Milne – Ōrākei Local Board Chairman

he school year at Ellerslie has got off to a flying start with 800 students from ages 5- 13 confidently walking through the gates rearing to go to ensure a successful 2020. The school is fully staffed with 65 committed educators taking on a variety of roles and responsibilities to ensure our young people are supported throughout 2020. This year we have added another Deputy Principal to the Senior Leadership Team, employed a full time Learning Support Coordinator, a School Counsellor who will be supporting the community for one day a week and 4 new, full time teacher aides.

all dressed up as Australians and donated gold coins to help them rebuild their lives. At our special assembly we were fortunate to have the team from the Ellerslie Firestation in attendance. They spoke about the importance of having smoke detectors installed in your homes and reminded everyone that all families should have an escape plan so they can get out of their homes quickly if a fire was to occur. The students have also started swimming lessons this week down at the YMCA Panmure Lagoon Centre and the senior students will have swimming sports later in the term.

Term 1 at Ellerslie is full of many exciting events. Recently nearly 100 students participated in the annual Weetbix Tryathlon at Point England Reserve. It was fantastic to see a large contingent of Ellerslie supporters enjoying this impressive event made even better by such perfect weather. On Friday 14th February, the school sent its aroha to our friends in Australia who have suffered terribly due to the recent bushfires. We

In 2020 the school will continue to focus on developing strong and positive relationships with the community. We are always looking for ways to connect with the community to help the students experience authentic learning opportunities throughout their time at Ellerslie. Please contact the school anytime if you have any opportunities where the school and community can work together. Enjoy the rest of the Summer.

his year we have started with our biggest school roll ever with 550 students and we expect to finish the year with 600 + students. We have over 60 nationalities and at the end of this term we will be having a Cultural Parade to celebrate our many different cultures. This year we have lots of exciting projects to look forward to: astroturfing of our courts, a large outdoor canopy being constructed, a swimming pool upgrade, embedding our new localised curriculum, continuing our enviroschools journey. However we are really excited about our TREEmendous outdoor classroom project, below is information about this project. TREEmendous – is a joint initiative between the Mazda Foundation and Project Crimson, teaches children about the importance of caring for the environment through the development of amazing outdoor classrooms for teachers and students to reconnect with nature. The initiative is about encouraging environmental education in schools, along with teaching children and the wider community about the importance of caring for the environment. Ruud Kleinpaste, the ‘Bugman’, is an ambassador for the project who takes environmental education to the next level at TREEmendous events. Ruud brings his insect friends along and teaches the children about New Zealand’s native bugs and the importance of looking after the environment. Check out treemendous.org.nz for more information and examples. In July 2019 the Eco-Warriors heard the exciting news that their stage 1 TREEmendous application made it into the top 10 out of the 88 schools who applied. This put us through to stage 2 of the competition, which required us to put our heads together to plan an amazing outdoor learning area for our school in a bid to be selected as one of the four schools to receive $10,000 and a TREEmendous event. We were notified that last year our application was successful and we will be holding a TREEmendous event to create our outdoor learning 26 ELLERSLIE VILLAGE MAGAZINE

area on the 8th and 9th of May 2020. On the 8th of May we will be visited by Ruud Kleinpaste and Riley Elliot. Ruud will talk to the students about the importance of bugs and all the roles they play in the environment and he will share with us practical ways we can use the new outdoor learning area. Riley is a shark expert and talks about the importance of the marine environment and following your dreams. Saturday the 9th of May is where, our school whanau and community, comes in! The Mazda Foundation, Project Crimson, Ruud Kleinpaste and Riley Elliot will all be at our school to help us realise the Eco-Warriors’ vision for our outdoor learning area and we need your help to get stuck in and get it done. As well as lots of work digging, planting, mulching and building, we will also hear from our visiting celebrities, have a delicious morning tea and finish with a BBQ lunch. We encourage you all to come along, it will be a great day.

The Ellerslie Toy Library is looking for just that. In return for discounted membership the Toy Buyer would be tasked with figuring out which toys the library might be lacking, or what is a current trend in the toy universe. "This role might best suit a parent who is onto their second or third child, so already knows the way around Duplo and WOW, Tonka and Disney” explains Lauren the Ellerslie Toy Library Committee Chair. We have received some great grants recently and so have decided that a Toy Buyer can become an official role on the committee. For parents willing and able to volunteer four times a year the library offers discounted membership fees, which can be a great way to meet other parents or simply reduce costs. The same is offered to those who join the committee as well as additional benefits worth discussing with the team.

Perfectly Balanced CHIROPRACTIC | MYOFASCIAL THERAPY NEUROMUSCULAR STABILISATION

Early on in the term we had a visit from the

Ellerslie Fire Service. We always really appreciate these visits. The kids thoroughly enjoy the experience and it is a great reminder for all of us to make sure our smoke alarms are working and we have family escape plans in place. Our annual trip to Butterfly Creek also took place in term 4. The kids loved feeding and patting the animals and the train ride. Watching the crocodiles being fed was also a highlight for many. We wrapped up the term with our Christmas Party. The kids were treated to a special morning tea with delicious home-made treats. They were entertained by a clown and of course we had a visit from Santa. Ellerslie Playgroup is a community-run group held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9.30-11.30am in Leicester Hall (corner Findlay and Ramsgate Streets). The sessions are free-play, but each week we also set up a craft activity, have a group morning tea and run a short music session. You’ll find us on Facebook and if you would like to try us out feel free to drop in for a visit on a Tuesday or Friday. We currently have spaces in both our groups and love meeting new families!

busy and successful 2019 year for our Club was capped off by another fun morning at the December Ellerslie Christmas Parade. It was a chance for some of our young members to enjoy the sunny festive atmosphere and hopefully inspire other children to take part in sports activities. Our Club grew by 60% in the number of teams we have, with basketball leading the way, to finish the year with a total of 20 teams across our Netball, Basketball and Athletics codes. In particular, it was pleasing to see the increase in the number of Primary and Secondary school children wanting to play Club competition, either as a more fun alternative to School Competitions or alternatively, just to play more of their chosen Sport. We were extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated group of skilled volunteers willing to give up their time for coaching, managing and supporting our enthusiastic membership. Without them, this year would not have been at all possible. So a big heart-felt THANK YOU! SUNZ SPORTS 2020 We kicked off the New Year in January with a “Meet & Greet” fun morning for new members at the Ellerslie Sports Grounds. It was great to see our parents join in with the kids, even though they knew they were risking aches and pains thereafter. The tug of war and lolly scramble being the highlights of the day. OUR PLANS Our plans this year is to expand our Netball, Basketball and Athletics programs even further with a further 8 teams expected. To enable

this to happen we are currently looking for more volunteer coaches and managers for our primary & secondary school age teams. If you want to be part of a fun family culture, where getting on with and supporting your team-mates is more important than winning, then contact us on our Facebook page @SUNZSPORTS. We would love to hear from you! ELLERSIE ATHLETICS 2020 Our Athletics program commenced 12 February and runs every Wednesday 5-6pm ending 25 March 2020. You can find our friendly SUNZ Coaching Team at the Ellerslie Domain at a cost of $55 per participant. Activities include; Get Set Go (5-6 year olds) Run Jump Throw (7-11 year olds) Speedwork! (For all ages) - Looking to have some pre-season training? This is the perfect opportunity! Fine tuning motor skills that are vital in sports through these sessions will have you geared up and ready to jump back into sports training no matter what sport! JOIN US! If you want to join our SUNZ SPORTS family then, sign up on our Facebook page @SUNZSPORTS, or email us at secretary@ stonefieldsports.co.nz your team/individual details or just come down and jump into one of the teams, mix, women, college age, primary age - all are welcome - Fun/Active/Friends. llerslie AFC are shaping up for a big 2020 year, with exciting news on and off the pitch for the club.

First up is some exciting news about the new Clubrooms and changing rooms, with the club having moved past the developed design stage and we are now moving into the detailed design stage with a view to applying for building consent in the next 5 or so months. We are still looking for a bit of funding to help us along this path so if you are keen to make a donation please head to our website (www.ellersliefootball.org.nz) and click on the link called “ESC Clubrooms Appeal” or contact our president Mark Weipers if you wish to discuss potential sponsorship for the new building. The development is seen as a key component in our strategic plan

to deliver better facilities to our membership, something that was reinforced in late 2019 when we looked at the results of a club wide survey we ran – a strong message that came out was that the club needed to continue to push on with this project. 2019 also saw the promotion of our Women’s team into the Northern Region Football Premier League – the highest club level of Women’s Football in New Zealand. That’s been an exciting journey for the club and with a total of 5 women’s teams which makes Ellerslie the largest women’s club in Auckland. The Club continues to grow and support our members with admin, infrastructure and smart strategic leadership. With the new building on the horizon the club is perfectly placed to become a hub for the local community for years to come.

ai Chi classes have begun again for 2020 in our Ellerslie community.

"don't procrastinate,

What started as the ACC Falls Prevention Program has continued with our Tai Chi strength and balance classes and we welcome new members.

do it now"

Tai Chi improves both the mind and the body. Using the flowing Tai Chi movements you become flexible, strong and relaxed, and afterwards feel energized and tranquil. Tai Chi exercise helps boost the immune system, manage stress, improve blood pressure, reduce blood sugar levels, improve cardiovascular and respiratory function, and also helps manage the symptoms of arthritis by increasing mobility and reducing pain. Tai Chi can be practiced sitting or standing or a combination of both. Anyone of any age can fall! Falls can take a serious toll on older adults’ quality of life and independence. We need awareness of Falls Prevention and to promote the message and skills so ‘Falls are Preventable’!

Come along and see how our classes will help you in your everyday life while keeping you an active member of the Ellerslie community. CLASSES ARE HELD On Wednesdays, in Leicester Hall, 20 Findlay St, Ellerslie, from 10.30-11.30am.
