elcome to our first issue of 2017. It’s been a great start to the year here in Ellerslie with many new openings and events to look forward to. If you haven’t been into Ellerslie for a while you are in for a treat – literally. We are delighted two new food establishments have decided to call Ellerslie home. Little Luscious Café, opposite the post office is known for their delicious salads, sweet treats and coffee. My particular favourite is the seasonal green salad, though I shouldn’t tell you that – they already often sell out! Secondly, Pastrami and Rye, a New York Style sandwich bar offering gorgeous food options throughout the day. They cure and smoke their own meats, make your sandwich to order, plus offer sweets from Bluebells Cakery. As an added bonus, they are open till 7pm offering take-home rotisserie chickens, salads, dinner options and slider packs. We are also welcoming Stitched Up Alterations as well as Electrical and Computer Services both of whom will be great assets to our village, plus watch this space for La La, a vintage clothing boutique that is due to open this month. In other news, Café Melba has also undergone a vibrant renovation and we look forward to welcoming another new retailer adjacent to Mike Pero Ellerslie in the very near future. We also have lots of events coming up in Ellerslie over the next few months for you to look out for. March brings with it Ellerslie Cup Week from the 4th till 11th. This year will be the 143rd running of the Auckland Cup, an event that has truly stood the test of time. The cup itself is a magnificent Victorian trophy that Queen Victoria commissioned her Crown Jeweller to make in 1889 and will be prominently on display. Don’t miss your chance to see it during this fantastic day right here in

our local neighbourhood. There are heaps of options for enjoying the racing days from high class luxury to family fun and entertainment. We will be running a competition in Ellerslie to win two tickets to the glamour of the Mumm Racing Village. Pop into Ellerslie and look out for window displays and posters detailing how to enter. Also now on in Ellerslie is the Pop Up Globe at the Ellerslie Racecourse. There will be four different plays on over the next few months which will be attracting people from all over Auckland to attend. We are also looking forward to our annual arts festival ARTerslie in May. Keep an eye out for our event program and the exciting new artworks we are currently planning to have commissioned as part of this event. On a different note, consultation on the Auckland Council Annual plan is now on until the 27th March. This document details how council plans to spend and set the rates and also other important choices on transport and how services should be funded. The local boards are now also consulting on their local priorities so make sure you have your say at www.shapeauckland.co.nz. With all the exciting new offerings and events on in Ellerslie, now is the time to visit, spend some time and discover even more to love about our village.

shipping container was placed in the carpark of the body corporate blocking the Rotary Walkway. This is an attempt to direct pedestrians from Findlay Street through the mall of 101 on to the high street. This is not in keeping with the positive community spirit Ellerslie is known for.
Fromhtahie c JohnrRennell Very belated Happy New Year to all the Ellerslie Community. In the Spring Edition I reflected on the Board’s “Strategic Focus on Ellerslie” in particular the strengths of a community with integrity and soul that is connected and progressive. A vibrant community that celebrates and encourages creativity and involvement. This is evident in our high street as the village continues to show prosperity. Buildings are being refurbished, established businesses are re-energising, fresh new businesses endorse the growth Ellerslie is enjoying. The demographics are now reaching a threshold where new established retailers are prepared to invest in our village. I am confident more will follow. What a bitter disappointment to have to dwell on a negative. The Rotary Walkway has been closed again exactly one year since the last aborted attempt by the body corporate of 101 Main Highway. On 13th December 2016, a rusty, unsightly
I understand the 101 Body Corporate of around five members is elected from the 18 or so strata title owners. These comprise shops from Bayleys to NZ Post, all of the Mall shops and the first floor offices above including the closed and open carparks. The Body Corporate claim the closure of the Rotary Walkway is because of “Health and Safety” and that it is a danger for pedestrians walking through the carpark. This argument does not stand up, as people walk through carparks constantly in supermarkets, public carparks etc. This mean-spirited act was conducted without consultation or warning. Although the Business Association and many parties have tried to engage with the body corporate they refuse to discuss the issue. Most of the 101 Main Highway complex are tenants and don’t have much input, if any, into the Body Corporate. It is the Strata title owners who have taken this heavy-handed approach. It is no surprise that very few of the strata title owners actually work or live in Ellerslie. The Business Association is making every effort to find a solution and have the container removed so pedestrians can continue to enjoy freedom of access to the high street and enjoy all the wonderfully positive aspects Ellerslie has to offer. I invite you to register your opinion with our association by emailing to: eba@ellerslie.net.nz or with the 101 Body Corporate on 101mainhighwayellerslie@gmail.com. Enjoy the rest of summer and I wish you all a successful and prosperous 2017.

ummer seems to have arrived at last and there is much to look out for in our local area. I trust you have all had a good break with your family and friends. Summer is good time to ponder on the past year and look forward to new beginnings. For me, that means reflecting on my decision to retire after a decade in public service and to look forward to a new season ahead of SAM LOTU-LIGA new challenges and opportunities. I have enjoyed serving you as your MP and councillor but the time has come to see a new face with a fresh vision represent our community in parliament. It has been an honour and privilege to serve you and I believe I leave our community a better place to live, work and play in. Finally, I thank you all for the support and encouragement you have given my family and I these past ten years. At this time each year we traditionally attend the many festivities that form part of our rich culture in New Zealand. That means Waitangi Day celebrations and Chinese New Year and lantern festivities. It was good to see the Prime Minister Bill English attend our local Waitangi Day celebrations in Orakei which was hosted by Ngati Whatua o Orakei as well as the Chinese New Year festival and market day here locally in Greenlane. These days take a lot of time and effort and so I acknowledge the fine work done by local iwi and the Chinese It’s the year of the community. At his state of the nation rooster! Gong xi fa cai! address, the Prime Minister announced an extra 1,125 new police staff over the next 4 years. This includes 880 sworn police officers and will help to reduce crime and prevent reoffending. Our constituent survey last year showed law and order remains an important local issue. We have hard working local police and an effective community patrol in operation. Therefore while New Zealand remains the fourth-safest country in the world, demand for traditional police services is growing, while complex and serious crime is absorbing more police time. The $503 million Safer Communities package will enable police to put more time, effort and resources into at-risk individuals and communities. The package has three components: targeting and catching offenders, preventing crime and victimisation, and delivering a more responsive service. The first recruits will begin training in July and hit the beat in November. Locally, I am pleased to see the progress made on installing barriers to the motorway in the Ellerslie area. I have met with a number of residents and local community groups and have taken your concerns to Simon Bridges the Minister of Transport. That is why it is good to see NZTA responding positively to local voices and concerns by advancing this project in 2017. I will be holding clinics for local constituents in Mt Wellington (3, March, 7 April, 5 May, 2 June, 7 July) from 10.00 am – 12.00 noon at the Mt Wellington Community Church Office – 5A Waipuna Road. To book a time please call my office – Pua and Darrell 09 622 0300. Finally, I look forward to a fruitful and productive final year as your local MP. If there is anything our electorate team can help you and your family with please contact either Darrell or Pua for assistance. I wish you and your families an abundant and blessed year in 2017. s someone who likes fast cars, wakeboarding*, and last year drove a car in a demolition derby, I think I’m the last person you’d label a princess. It was fun to be surrounded by them though! Hats off to the professional princesses and everyone else in our recent Santa Parade. I don’t know how she does it, but once again town manager Megan Darrow arranged for perfect weather. e, 2016 Ellerslie Santa Parad Parades and weather aren’t the only things she organizes. Megan is responsible for Ellerslie’s relationship with our economic development division of Council, a body called ‘Auckland Tourism, Events, & Economic Development’ (ATEED). Most think Auckland Council is about roads, rates, and rubbish, and in large part that’s right. ATEED however, also fosters international education, international business attraction, creation of high-tech innovation hubs, and assists unemployed youth into jobs. Should this be the role of Council? Absolutely. We need to transform Auckland’s economy into a high-wage economy for everyone’s benefit. In that environment your kids/ grandkids will want to stay and live here, your employees will be happier, and Auckland will well and truly be on the international map. I’ve been a fan of ATEED’s work but I’d now like to champion Auckland (& Ellerslie) issues from parliament. Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, our local MP has announced he’s retiring at this year’s September election and I’m seeking selection for the position. My thanks to Sam and his young family for years of tireless service. Parliamentary life is not easy and Sam has always handled things with his famous trademark smile.

desley simpson So what do you think? Auckland Councillors have started the year by confirming the material that will go to all Aucklanders on the Annual Plan and Budget for 2017/2018 In his opening statement, the mayor acknowledges not all councilors currently agree with everything in the material, but what we all do agree on, is that we should ask Auckland their opinion before deciding on how we spend ratepayers money. There are 5 key regional issues we are asking your feedback on; 1. Rates increases. Currently the LTP has a projected 3.5% increase scheduled for 17/18. We have worked hard to offer Auckland the choice of keeping this, or going even lower to 2.5% ( the mayors preference) or even 2% 2. Rating stability. Current policy has residential ratepayers receiving higher rates increases to business ratepayers. Should we change that policy so that business and residential ratepayers have the same increase? 3. Paying for tourism promotion. Currently general rates money is used to help pay for tourism promotion and major events. Should we continue to do this or target those ratepayers who benefit more directly from tourism promotion i.e. accommodation sector and free up more general rates to be spent on transport infrastructure? If we did, we would create a new group including industry representatives to provide direction on how the money is spent.
Orakei Local Board
I
t’s my pleasure to be penning my first column as your new Ōrākei Local Board Chairman. Although our inauguration was some months ago now, I think it is still relevant to explain how local boards fit into the Auckland Council structure, as it is unfortunately a commonly confused or misunderstood structure. I find myself frequently explaining it to people and am pleased to take this opportunity to do so now. I am also pleased to introduce you to the members of the 2016 – 2019 Ōrākei Local Board. In the statutory declaration our Ōrākei Local Board members took when they were sworn in, are the words ‘Orakei Local Board of the Auckland Council’.In exercising our delegated responsibilities, duties and powers the Board and its members are Auckland Council. Local boards are not committees of the Governing Body nor are they community boards (which may be created and disbanded by councils). Legislators created local boards as part of Auckland Council’s shared governance structure. Auckland has 21 local boards, each with between five and nine members, who represent their respective communities. The Governing Body consists of the Mayor and 20 members, representing13 wards and making

4. Paying for housing infrastructure. All houses require drains, roads, water supply and sewerage. Should we continue to reply on the current funding tools we have, change our funding policy to allow for the use of targeted rates to fund infrastructure of new houses or request central government to provide more tools for growth infrastructure? 5. Paying Council Staff a Living wage. Should we keep with current policy which in 2016 saw those over $40,000 receive a 1% increase and those under a 2.5% increase or phase in the Living wage for Council staff and our substantive CCO’s which will cost 7 million by the end of this Council term. The consultation period for the Annual Budget opens on 27 February and runs to 4pm on 27 March. Your opinion is very important and I look forward to discussing these with you further and reading your submissions. There are several ways to have your say. Information and submission forms will be provided to households with the March edition of the Our Auckland magazine. Residents and ratepayers can also find out more and make submissions by looking for the annual budget on www.shapeauckland.co.nz. There will also be opportunities for the public to have their say in person at a range of events around the Auckland Region. I will be presenting at least one public meeting in our ward to explain in more detail these issues and hear your views. Your Ellerslie Residents Association will have the information when confirmed or please contact me on desley.simpson@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz or 021971786.
decisions with more regional considerations. There is no hierarchy between the two bodies, but there are different jurisdictional responsibilities. The Ōrākei Local Board has seven members, four of whom are new. Troy Churton, Kit Parkinson and I have been re-elected for another term. We are joined by new members Carmel Claridge of St Johns, Toni Millar of Stonefields, Rosalind Rundle of Orakei and David Wong of Remuera. We’re privileged to have been elected by our fellow citizens to serve the community. We will endeavour to continue to earn trust and confidence, as we work together on behalf of, and in the best interests of our communities, and as kaitiaki (guardians). Since the inauguration Board members have been busy in workshops being briefed on Council activities. A lot of the projects from the Board’s previous plan are under way or completed. We’re now preparing the Board’s next three year plan, known as the ‘Local Board Plan’, which is required by law. A draft of this will be available for public input during 2017 and we look forward to engaging with you on this at that time. On behalf of my Ōrākei Local Board colleagues, I wish you a pleasant end to summer and an easy transition into autumn and hope you are able to enjoy it in our lovely Ōrākei Ward. Colin Davis, Chairman, Ōrākei Local Board.

FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER: CACI’S MOST ADVANCED SKIN TREATMENT Fractional CO2 Laser is our ultimate skin correcting treatment for correcting tone and texture, plus reducing lines and wrinkles. HOW DOES FRACTIONAL CO2 LASER WORK? The laser works by penetrating the deeper layers of the skin, which triggers the skins natural healing process and stimulates collagen production. As a result, your skin rejuvenates and grows back stronger, firmer, smoother and more refreshed. HOW IS IT DIFFERENT? Unlike other lasers, the Fractional CO2 Laser penetrates the deeper layers of the skin combining heat and CO2 maximises the treatment, providing better, and more long lasting results WHAT CONCERNS DOES IT TREAT? • Lines & wrinkles • Uneven skin tone • Advanced sun damage • Scarring DOES IT HURT? It’s our priority to ensure you’re as comfortable as possible during all treatments. Small areas of the skin are treated at a time, therefore it is more comfortable than other laser treatments. Most clients are happy to have the treatment with a light topical anaesthetic.
Before
After
WHAT DOWNTIME IS INVOLVED? As the treatment is done in small patches, you will notice afterwards that you have a pattern of evenly spaced dots in the treatment area. You’ll be given aftercare product to apply to protect and help the healing process. Following the treatment, you can expect some redness and slight swelling. This is normal and temporary. You will be given thorough instructions and information to take home, so you know what to expect. It’s very important to stay out of the sun in the days following your treatment, if you need to go outside, apply plenty of sunblock, and throw on some sunglasses and a hat. HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED? For best results, we recommend a course of treatments. With Caci’s Reformaskin plan; appointments are scheduled for you over the course of a year, you will have 4 treatments, plus a combination of conditioning skin treatments. On a Caci treatment plan you can choose to pay using one of our interest free payment options. Book your free consultation at Caci Ellerslie, contact the team on 09 571 0575.

CORNWALL PARK FARM
FARMER FINDS HIS HOME IN THE CITY Cornwall Park farm manager enjoys the challenges of running a public farm STORY CANDICE THUM
H
ome is where the heart is, or so the saying goes. In the case of Northland farmer Peter Maxwell the saying could not be truer. It has been nearly a decade since Peter and his wife, Angela, shut the farm gate behind them at the 1800 acre Tapora farm they were managing and arrived at the inner city sanctuary of Cornwall Park. The honor bestowed upon Peter was farm manager, and although he was awarded the title ahead of “lots and lots” of other applicants the reality of farming in the city came with reservations. “We thought Cornwall Park was a small farm in the city. It is not where we thought we’d be,” Peter explains. “Farming life is transient. Most farmers do not expect it to be transient to the city though. It’s a little ironic too, since my wife is an artist. She paints rural scenes, and here we were, moving to the city.” The decision to walk away from the beef and sheep farming he had been doing across Northland for 18 years was driven by family. His two daughters, then young adults, moved to Auckland following their career dreams. Naturally Peter and Angela missed them and wanted to be closer to them. It was 10 years ago that they saw the New Zealand Herald advertisement for the position at Cornwall Park. Peter applied and crossed his fingers.
12
Ellerslie Magazine
“Peter was a stand out for the job because not only is he a technically sound farmer, but also he has a great manner in dealing with the public,” Cornwall Park director Michael Ayrton says. “He is very relaxed and relates well to people at all levels.” Fast-forward to today and the decision has proven beneficial for both the Maxwell family and the heritage of Cornwall Park itself. “We did arrive knowing that Cornwall Park was unique and would come with its own unique challenges. It is a farm in the middle of a city after all,” Peter says. “When we got here we found very quickly the support of the (Cornwall Park Board) trustees and staff as unique as the farm itself. Their ongoing support in the daily running of the farm is beyond belief. They help with everything and anything that needs doing. Things like docking, shearing, fencing, you name it. They are onboard and hands on.”And so it seems that running a city-based farm is not much different from a rural farm. Albeit, the number of public visitors. We met Peter in the shearing shed. His three dogs nipping about his heels, eager to get on with the day. Sheep outside, all around us. A guy in a ute pulled up to yarn to Peter about some work, set about sharpening tools. Wind whipped through the corrugated iron walls. It was all very, well, farm-like. Peter and Angela’s farmhouse could be seen in the distance. They live onsite, much to both daughters delight who conveniently use it as a base when regularly passing through Auckland. Living onsite comes with the job of course, and that means Peter is accessible 24-hours, 7 days a week, well almost. “I don’t work 24 hours a day, but my phone is on 24 hours a day,” he says. “I will take every call that comes in. I’ve had calls at very early hours of the morning from public concerned about stock on

roads. Some of these calls have provided some lighter moments, but I have to take every call in case it is something more important than a stray sheep.” Farming is a tough physical job. Fortunately Peter has the helping hand of farm assistant Brenton Helleur. A local lad and former Cornwall Park District School student, Brenton has been part of the team for three years. Being a local has certainly helped. “He worked on the farm in summers gone by,” Peter says. “A terrific worker and guy. He’s a qualified arborist and his local knowledge is unbeatable. It’s handy having him around in more ways than one.”
“
The biggest challenge of the job is also a reward for Peter. Every year 4 million visitors come to Cornwall Park. Some have never been on a farm before. “Country farms are generally only visited by people in the business. This is a public farm visited by city folk, families, international visitors and country people passing through,” Peter says. “The most rewarding part of the job is the education I get to pass on to the general public. It is rewarding to be able to explain to them why cattle behave they way they do. Sometimes the education is around not chasing the sheep, don’t let the dogs loose, etc. It’s not just the stock we worry about when there are lose dogs in the park. It’s a public park. Families come here, lots of people exercise here. You don’t want their safety jeopardized either.” And so with a wave Peter heads back across the gravel to his ute calling his dogs. He spent the day caring for the 600 ewes, 56 breeding cows, passing on his wisdom and, after that, fixing fences. A farm in the city is still a farm, and it still has fences, lots of fences. And any farmer will tell you, fences always need mending.

SPECIAL PET CARE
Top Dogs Day Stay is owned and run by Angela Lewis “To me, the two most important things within this business are our team of professionals and the high quality care and attention they provide every single day to our ‘Day Stay’ dogs. And secondly, our amazing and loyal Clients and the wellbeing of their dogs. Without these two key factors, forever being at the forefront as our drivers, we wouldn’t be operating from the passionate, empathetic and knowledgeable ‘place’ that we are”. Our team is led by our resident vet nurse Rachel Stone. Rachel has recently completed a certificate in Canine Myofunctional Therapy through the national college of traditional medicine in Melbourne. We are really excited to announce the offering of this service through her in-house business ‘Purely Canine’ here at Top Dogs Day Stay. Our Dog Day Stay has a dual focus in that we run a daily puppy programme as well as the adult dog care and skills programme. We take puppies as soon as they are fully vaccinated and they slot right into the daily puppy care programme. In addition to canine massage we also have a full obedience service within our Top Dogs “Obedience Academy Training”, services include; owner and puppy group training classes, owner and puppy individual training packages, Day Stay care and obedience packages, tailored owner and dog leadership programmes and on the lead walking services. On the wellbeing side we offer washing and grooming, dietary advice, ear cleaning and nail trimming.

She has volunteered at Victim Support and Ellerslie Business Association for over 20 years, working with four town centre managers and helped create the Community Events Team during the 1990s. Bernadette and her husband, Mark, moved to Ellerslie in November 1987. They remember the day well. It was Michael Park School Gala day, and access to their Ballin Road property (at the top of Amy Street) was restricted due to the nose-to-tail parking up and down the road. They had never experienced this level of community support for an event, and amid the chaos of navigating moving vans between parked cars they knew they were home. A few years later children arrived, a son and daughter now 26 and 23 years-old, completing the family. At this time the

village consisted of one take away outlet, one pub, squash courts, a petrol station, a gun shop, no cafes and few other staples. The schools were small and sense of community strong. Although the township has changed with more pubs, and cafes, the essence of community has survived. Mark’s business grew and he relocated to Penrose. For a brief moment the couple considered moving, but decided on renovating instead. “We knew everyone here,” Bernadette explained. “Ellerslie is a village within a conurbation. The shops might be different, but the connection of residents is not. Ellerslie is a place built on a strong foundation of service, family and sense of belonging. That platform for growth and support for our children can not be measured and I believe it is even stronger now.” During the 1990s, Bernadette was part of the inaugural Ellerslie Business Association team. She championed the Community Events Team responsible for the annual Christmas Party and Parade, which in its conception was second only to the Auckland central parade. These values of service, duty and engagement run deep in Bernadette’s synthetic. It is why she is so good at her job, and why she wants to support young people to reach their own potential. “Attitude is contagious,” she says. “As a group we are here to support each other with the gifts we are given. I firmly believe we are 90 per cent of what we do with our lives and 10 per cent of what happens to you. We need to become friends of the present to strengthen the future.” Sadly, our conversation came to an end. I left Bernadette ordering a coffee to take to a family member dealing with grief and tapping the shoulder of another local for a quick exchange on pressing community noticeboard news. Her words ringing true as I walked away. “As a community we talk to each other and have a deep trust of each other. Without trust and connection there’d be nothing left,” she simplifies. “He aha te mea nui o tea o? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.”

ellerslie theatrical society Already it is March and we are about to mount our first GALA night for 2017 on Thursday the 16th March. Our play will be the New Zealand comedy BOYS AT THE BEACH written by Alison Quigan and Ross Gumbley, directed by David Charteris. It concerns 4 young men, straight out of university who buy a section at the beach where they can be free to do as they like for the summer. There are thoughts of beer, girls, barbies, music, cricket and all the indulgences of youth. We watch them stumble their way through these early stages and become upstanding citizens and men of property with families. We are sure everyone who sees it will identify with some part of the Kiwi lifestyle!
Ring the theatre, 525 3336, or book online www. iticket.co.nz. As well as rehearsing and actors learning lines, others of us have been having fun gathering props from 1974 and building sets. You will remember all those photos in the last magazine of behind the scenes of our last successful production Waiting in the Wings by Noel Coward. Should anyone feel the urge and have a little time to be part of the support team each production needs, just ring the theatre and talk about what you would like to do. Backstage, front of house, hunting down props, set building, learn about light and sound. The list goes on. We look forward to hearing from you.
The season runs from the 16th March until the 25th March. There are two matinees, Sunday 19th March and Saturday 25th March at 2p.m.
Don’t forget to book your seats for Boys at the Beach. Come on Gala night and enjoy the excitement of opening night with pre show nibbles and champagne. Doors open at 7.30p.m.
Already Thursday 23rd is fully booked so don’t delay, gather your friends and book. Remember if you book 10 or more seats together, each adult ticket has a discount of $2.
See you there!

ELLERSLIE school After a holiday that we hope was filled with joy, if not sunshine, it is with great pleasure that we started the new school year. We have had a successful start to learning at Ellerslie School and we are excited about the plans and number of fantastic changes and initiatives that we have underway. 2017 is going to be an amazing year for Ellerslie School; we have our largest roll to date, we have a wonderfully talented team of staff, we have identified and are actioning a number of key strategic priorities including: collaboration with schools in the Maungakiekie Community of Learning, school-wide curriculum review, deployment of Bring Your Own Device (Year 5 - 8), redevelopment of our whanau house system, further communication channels and engagement with our school community to name just a few. The year ahead is chock full of opportunities for our students to learn and enjoy and of particular note to the wider Ellerslie community is our 140 year anniversary celebration coming up later in the year. For the first time in many years, Ellerslie
School started the year with enough room for all students. As is the case for so many schools in central Auckland, roll growth has been rapid during the past few years, and Ellerslie had long outgrown its buildings. Playing fields had been lost to relocatable classrooms, and the old, single cell-style units were inhibiting the school’s move to flexible learning space pedagogy. For anyone following the progress of building on the school site you may have noticed that over the past few weeks the eight relocatables that have been on the school field since the beginning of the new classroom building project have been moved off site. To say we are delighted to have our field back is an understatement and we looking forward to fully optimising this space again for teaching and learning programmes. We are very pleased to promote the school within the local community, celebrate achievements and raise awareness of events and have established an Ellerslie School Facebook page to share these further. We would love to see you “liking” us on Facebook.

Victoria joined Toastmasters here in Ellerslie to better her career and gain the confidence to speak in front of large audiences. Her biggest challenge was tackling the first speech, the Icebreaker. In time she was able to add humour and not use her notes. She is most proud of completing the first 10 speeches and taking on the role of Club Treasurer. She is now comfortable talking to groups of people in a new work situation and social settings.

friends of the auckland philharmonic orchestra
Already we are greeting the 3rd month of 2017 which will be a very exciting year for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra friends as we celebrate a milestone in our history. The Auckland Symphonia had recently dissolved but a few of the players had continued to play together and had a small following. Nancye Martin invited some of her friends to meet in the Auckland Domain and they agreed that these players needed support and encouragement. She immediately set about forming a committee to arrange this support. Such was her enthusiasm that all her appointees accepted their
various tasks and “The Friends” was born. This was 35 years ago in 1982! Now in 2017 we are still supporting our orchestra. Although it is now a polished fully professional group of musicians who proudly carry the title of New Zealand’s only “Metropolitan” orchestra it still needs our support. 35 years ago we baked, sewed, preserved, ran raffles – even a house – anything to raise money to help pay the expenses. We even supplied supper for the musicians and the audience! We met, greeted and billeted overseas musicians. We advertised the concerts wherever and however we could. Gradually the orchestra became stronger and the audiences grew until now they fill the Town Hall. The Friends also grew from that first dozen or so up to almost 400 all of whom paid a subscription which itself raises some thousands of dollars each year. Our membership is open to everyone who enjoys listening to music. You do not need to know a lot about it or to have played an instrument, just enjoy it. The subscription is only $30 per year. You will no longer be asked to bake or sew as we did in the past although we do
still provide supper for the musicians. A service for which we are world famous. Our visiting international musicians keep telling us this is the only place in the world they are offered refreshments during a performance. You will however, receive a discounted entry fee to our ever-popular Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall where we have music from amazingly talented young musicians, chat with visiting international musicians and have a light finger food lunch. You will also receive a 6 monthly programme so you will know when these and other functions are held. Our brilliant orchestra, as do all orchestras worldwide, still needs friends to support it and we need friends, so, demonstrate your pride in what has become one of the brightest jewels in Auckland’s crown and contact Anne Stewart, our membership secretary, phone 476 1353 or Bryce Bartley, our president, phone 379 4446 and ask for a membership form. We look forward to meeting you and both sharing our memories and moving forward to an even brighter future with your help.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A PART OF THIS EXCITING WORLD? Ring Anne Stewart, 476 1353 our membership secretary or Bryce Bartley 580 1967 for more information.

Check out whats happening with the ERA on our website www.ellerslieresidents.co.nz Congratulations to the newly elected Orakei Local Board Members. The ERA was pleased to have newly elected Board Member Carmel Claridge attend our recent committee meeting and share her personal story of life growing up in Ellerslie. Carmel attended University and attained her law degree, and started working for an inner city law firm. Carmel promises to be an advocate for Ellerslie, the suburb she loves and holds fond memories of. After years of lobbying and discussions it is good to be able to report that progress is being made on plans to install noise barriers on the eastern side of the Southern Motorway through Ellerslie from Greenlane to Penrose. Residents on the other side of the Motorway, such as Hudson, Marama, and Newhaven with properties bounded by railway land may have a further wait before action can be taken to reduce the noise they endure as diesel locomotives and trucks climb the incline towards Greenlane. The inadequate noise/safety barriers on Ellerslie’s section of the Southern Motorway
SECRETARY WANTED The ERA urgently needs a competent Secretary for the work of our busy Committee. Email Edgar at - ellerslieresidents@gmail.com if you are available or can nominate someone.
In a letter to the Secretary of the ERA on 19th December 2016, Minister of Transport Simon Bridges advised of the following timetable for the construction of barriers on the Eastern side of the motorway: • Investigation phase of the Ellerslie noise barriers by the end of January 2017 • Consultation with affected property owners and detailed design to be completed in March 2017 • Consenting and tendering through April–May 2017 • Construction to commence in or before August 2017. We understand that NZTA is continuing with this programme, and we hope to be able to up-date the community on specific progress at the ERA Public Meeting to be held at 7pm on Monday 20th March, 2017. A flyer with the venue will be dropped in all letterboxes in early March. (We deliver our flyers addressed to the Residents or Homeowner of any home in Ellerslie). Auckland Transport is currently upgrading Robert Street. The ERA has asked for a pedestrian crossing between Morrin Street and Tecoma Street so pedestrians can safely cross Roberts Street and proceed down the Lodge side of Robert Street. AT also has distributed a limited number of proposals for a pedestrian crossing across Ladies Mile outside the Hospice Shop. This location will make it impossible for right turning cars to exit the public car park opposite the shop. Contact AT directly if you oppose this plan or if you have any better suggestions on how to keep pedestrians safe on our very busy suburban roads. Send an email to our website at www. ellerslieresidents.co.nz if you want all our members to read your suggestions.
THE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD DENTAL CARE “You have a very kind heart and you are gem of a person. I would highly recommend you to all my friends and relatives to be able to get rid of all their dental issues.” (Priyanka Emani)
“Angela has a totally different approach of preserving what you have rather than replacing it with a costly substitute.” (A.J. Milne)
“We believe shared decision making, knowledge and lifestyle improvements create the best holistic and scientific outcomes for our patients.” Ellerslie dentist Angela Lowe-Ho has been successfully restoring the teeth - and smiles - of patients for more than thirty years, and a growing list of testimonials reflects her professional and caring nature.
In addition to her skilled surgical procedures which involve minimal intervention, she uses safe and bio-compatible materials for fillings, restorations, crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canal treatments.
The primary focus of the dental centre is on emergency pain relief, broken fillings, root canals, extractions, wisdom teeth, bleeding gums, including hygiene and hygienist treatments. However Angela also lives by the slogan, Dentist with a Difference.
“I’m kind of a dental life coach or a dental fitness trainer. I provide holistic, scientific, advanced Dental artistry techniques which are

Are you seeking an education for your child that fosters the development of imagination as well as creativity and critical thinking? Then Michael Park may be the school for your family. Michael Park School is a state integrated Rudolf Steiner School. We deliver the New Zealand Curriculum and offer Steiner Education from early childhood (kindergarten) right through to year 13. Our aim is to encourage the development of the whole child in such a way that they become imaginative and resourceful problem solvers with vision and enthusiasm for the world in which they live well after they have completed their final year of schooling. At Michael Park School we provide an education for life. Our High School offers the International Steiner School Certificate at level 1 as well as NCEA level 2 and 3. Our results continue to show a high rate of course endorsement for NCEA and a pass rate well ahead of the national average for New Zealand secondary schools. Apart from the traditional academic studies, our Year 13 students undertake a year-long project involving independent study and a socio-ecological component. They also participate in workshops throughout the year such as philosophy, astronomy, atomic physics, History of Art and many more which are designed to produce citizens of the world with a wide base of knowledge and understanding. By the time they graduate, Michael Park students are articulate, confident, inquiring individuals who are interested in the world and keen to make a meaningful contribution to society. Throughout the school, students have access to a rich curriculum of outdoor education, outdoor classroom, crafts, music, circus, drama and eurythmy (expressive movement art) as well as the traditional and academic subjects provided at other schools.
24
Students are also involved in many aspects of school life from gardening to environmental care, festivals, community events, peer support and much more. Our music programme provides the opportunity for every middle school student to play an instrument. Michael Park School continues to achieve outstanding success in several sporting disciplines, especially lacrosse and basketball. Michael Park School underwent an ERO review in 2016 with superb results. ERO commented that “students at all levels of the school continue to achieve well”, and that “the curriculum embraces and embeds the Steiner/ Waldorf vision for confident, connected and actively involved learners”. Students are “well prepared for learning beyond school”. This is reflected in our steadily increasing senior student achievement results, which show that the majority of students leave Michael Park School with an endorsed NCEA Level 3 qualification. As an area school we are not zoned, so we draw families from a wide area. Students can commence Steiner Education at any stage of their schooling. Limited places are available for new enrolments in out kindergarten and high school. Michael Park School has regular open afternoons on the first Wednesday of each month during term time. In addition to this we hold open days when the school is open for guided tours between 9am and 5pm.

ELLERSLIE COMBINED PROBUS Probus is up and running for another busy year. We had our usual informal lunch in January, this year at Waipuna Lodge. Most of our members were able to come and everyone enjoyed it. It had been a long time since our last meeting in November last year and there was much catching up to do. Our first official meeting for this year was on the 17th February in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall at 10a.m. We had a very interesting speaker, Bill McKay, who is an architectural historian. He spoke to us about New Zealand’s public buildings with particular emphasis on Auckland’s, some of which remain. We keep being reminded by international musicians what a remarkable performance space our Town Hall is. One of the 5 best in the world acoustically. To be preserved at all costs. We always suggest that prospective members come once or twice to see if Probus is what they are looking for before we ask them to actually pay the subscription of $15 per year plus a joining fee of $10. We also organise a board game morning in the church hall in Ladies Mile every Thursday morning. The games played are mostly Scrabble, Upword, Rummicub and
17th March Our speaker at this month’s meeting on the 17th March will be Ros Giffney talking about the Sistema movement in Otara and the amazing effect it is having. Our trip out of Auckland in February was up to Pine Harbour by ferry. A demonstration of how Auckland is growing. What used to be a few houses on the side of a hill is now quite a large community. Our next trip will be to Hamilton with lunch on the Waikato River and a visit to the Gardens, on Friday the 24th of March. If you are thinking of joining Probus this would be an ideal opportunity to come and meet us. Just ring Val Jackson 525 6330 or Rona Colbert 579 7605 to find out the details.
Mah Jong. You do not have to be a member of probus to come to these mornings. A $3 entrance fee covers the rent of the space and morning tea. It is a relaxing morning, not competitive, so if you are not the best player or haven’t played for a while, it doesn’t matter. Again, ring Val or Rona for details. We hope to see you soon!
ellerslie tai chi Once you have tried Tai Chi with Alison, you will see how, the combination of slow, gentle, movements add up to an invigorating workout. We practice Tai Chi slowly because it is better for your health. Slower movements allow the energy of the body to flow making it much easier to keep your muscles soft or relaxed and to keep the mind calm. Slow movements allow your own body to control the load or the weight of your limbs more effectively. Tai Chi and Balance Studies have shown Tai Chi to reduce falls in seniors by up to 45%. In Tai Chi you relax or soften your muscles (this lowers the center of gravity) and at the same time elongate the spine, this creates a relaxed posture. Tai Chi takes away the ‘fear of
falling’: you are more stable on your feet, more aware of your internal body and the world around you, and you have a better sense of your position in space. This results in increased body awareness and improved mobility. The benefits of Tai Chi are well documented. Tai Chi improves a wide range of physical and mental health issues: bone strength, joint stability, cardiovascular health, the immune system, and our emotional well-being. The Tai Chi practice provides an integrative approach to strengthening the body and focusing the mind. Getting started Because Tai Chi has ‘zero impact’; it doesn’t put strain on aging bones and joints. Tai Chi can be practiced sitting or standing and by all ages and it is fun.
Classes are held on Mondays at 11-12pm or Wed 10-11am at Leicester Hall, 20 Findlay St, or on Tuesdays from 6-7pm at The Steiner House, 104 Michaels Ave. Contact Alison Thomas on 021 528 744 alison.taichi@gmail.com

When should my child start swimming lessons?
The advice Hilton Brown gives any parent about starting swimming lessons is to “start young”. Under five is the best time to start learning, so that by age eight all the components are in place –body position, head position, streamlining and breathing technique. Swimming lessons will also help build your child’s confidence as they face new and difficult tasks in their learning environments. For young children, learning is a constant process. Every day they are learning new things about the world and their abilities. And this only increases when they go to school. So by having a regular activity like swimming lessons it can help balance out any perceived failures by providing them with a ‘comfort zone’ in the pool where they feel capable. “We offer all new customers a free trial lesson, so we can see what’s needed in the way of coaching”, says Hilton. “Our lessons are structured so that children are taught at the right level – not too easy, not too hard. We promote them to the next level as soon as they’re ready, so they can make progress at their own pace and they feel good about it at the same time.” If you’re keen for your child to become more confident both in and out of the water, book in for a free assessment at your nearest Hilton Brown Swimming centre.

After the summer holiday, our doors are now open and we have another action-packed year ahead. With some fantastic weather since re-opening this year, we have already made great use of our centre’s outdoor facilities and resources. We expect that this term the children will have many more opportunities to enjoy water play, obstacle courses, the playground, the ever-popular sandpit and so much more! As always, 2017 will see the children of Ellerslie Playcentre involved in all kinds of outdoor and indoor activities which aim to stimulate their

Welcome to another exciting year at One Tree Hill College. The year has already started very well with another big intake of Year 9 students, most of which are from our local community. The roll is now at capacity and our enrolment scheme is assisting us to prioritise families wishing to enrol children from our community. I am very proud to be able to inform our community that our 2016 NCEA results were outstanding. Over 85% of students achieved their NCEA Level 1, 2, and 3. This, along with a very high percentage of students achieving merit and excellence endorsements in NCEA, continue to highlight the excellent teaching and learning taking place at One Tree Hill College. In addition to these outstanding achievement levels, I am also excited to announce that students at One Tree Hill College achieved 3 NZQA Scholarships in Calculus, Physics and Music – this is the highest level of achievement possible across New Zealand. I would like to congratulate the many students who achieved so highly. To succeed at these levels are outstanding achievements and we are all very proud of these students. We have honoured these students at our annual
Scholars Assembly with ‘Academic Excellence’ awards and challenge all other students to emulate their success this year (the large number of students achieving at these high levels can be seen in the photo). These wonderful results reflect the emphasis that we have placed on our college values and ‘Attitudes to Learning’which are fundamental to student success. Students are focussed on academic achievement, and 2017 will see One Tree Hill College reach even greater heights following our outstanding successes last year. Following the excellent Education Review Office (ERO) report endorsing the college and placing us on the 4-5 year cycle for outstanding schools, this continues to be a great time to be involved with One Tree Hill College. We certainlyhave students with exceptional talent and it is wonderful to see them show such pride in the college. I look forward to the many successes which will occur throughout the year.

St Mary’s Catholic School, Ellerslie New Principal - New Era A happy school nestled in the heart of our community has had a positive and enthusiastic start to 2017 as their new principal, Saira Boyle takes on her new role as a first time principal. She has worked at St Mary’s for the last 4 years and following the retirement of their previous principal of 26 years, she is very excited to have won the leadership position in this school. St Mary’s staff, students and families are supportive and motivated to work together to bring her vision for learning and their future focussed curriculum to life, in order to ensure learners receive an authentic, relevant and quality curriculum.
christ church On Wednesday the 1st of February, we held a service where the Bishop of Auckland commissioned the Reverend Rebecca Heale as our new Priest in Charge. It is a new chapter in the life of our church and we are all excited to see what the future holds for us and for the Ellerslie community. Rebecca came from St Chads Church in Meadowbank where she focused on serving the community and welcoming them into the wider life of the church. There she established and facilitated a ‘SPACE for You and Your Baby’ group, which provides support, education and fun for first time mums and their babies and she is keen to look at starting an initiative like this to

meet the needs of young families in Ellerslie. ellerslie AFC eastern suburbs Football as a sport is still growing in popularity in NZ and at Ellerslie AFC we are no different with growth in most areas and in particular in Girls and Women’s participation. Luckily this season we will be able to finally use the lower fields at Michaels Ave to their new full capacity after missing out on them for the most part of the last three seasons. The new ground layout at Michaels Ave will result in three full size pitches and one half field pitch being able to be played and trained on in conjunction with our existing artificial turf – this gives our almost 1500 members far more quality opportunities to experience the beautiful game in their local area just like we can see in the picture
featured here. By the time this article goes to print most of our teams will be selected and ready for the start of the season in April – however we are always happy to welcome new members of any level – if you are interested please send us an email to the appropriate contact person below. Junior/Youth (5 to 18) Ryan Shiffman coaching@ellersliefootball.org.nz. Senior (19+) Tim Adams chairman@ellersliefootball.org.nz.
If you are interested in other footballing opportunities other than playing, such as coaching, refereeing, spectating or even volunteering you are all welcome – general enquires can go to our club secretary Lynette Margison on secretary@ellersliefootball.org.nz or check us out online

Methamphetamine and the law What does Meth look like?
What is Methamphetamine?
In New Zealand, it is available in two main forms: a powder and a crystal ‘rock’. “Crystal rock methamphetamine is the purest form of methamphetamine. It is often called ‘ice’ due to its appearance. This highly addictive form is becoming more popular. Because it is usually smoked it is absorbed rapidly into the body, resulting in more pronounced effects on the central nervous system. “Methamphetamine powder is snorted, injected or swallowed as a pill by users. It can come in a variety of shades of blue, green, brown and yellow.
Methamphetamine is an extremely addictive, powerful stimulant. It produces wakefulness, hyperactivity and a euphoric effect. Methamphetamine is also known as speed, pure, P, burn, goey, crank, meth, crystal, ice and yaba among other names.
What police are doing about Methamphetamine in new zealand?
risks associated with meth
Methamphetamine has serious social, economic and even environmental consequences. Police are focused on breaking-down local and international crime syndicates and disrupting the production, importation and distribution of methamphetamine. Police has a methamphetamine action plan which makes disrupting methamphetamine manufacturing a priority for all
There are risks in the process due to the poisonous, explosive, corrosive, toxic and extremely flammable chemicals used. Exposure to chemicals found in clan labs can cause various symptoms including headaches, watery or burning eyes, nausea, burning skin, coughing or choking, diaphragm pain, feeling of coldness or weakness, shortness of breath or dizziness, decreased cognitive function, vertigo and convulsions. If you find a clan lab, get out Strange smells, fumes and vapour escaping from windows or ventilators, sealed windows and premises being used for purposes other than normal, are some of the signs that indicate premises may be being used as a clan lab. If you suspect you have found a clan lab get away from the area immediately.
Police staff. Police works closely with the Organised and Financial Crime Agency of New Zealand, which targets organised criminal groups such as gangs that are involved in the methamphetamine trade. Clandestine drug laboratories Methamphetamine is manufactured in New Zealand in clandestine (secret) drug laboratories, known as ‘clan labs’, or imported in crystal form.
If you suspect the house you are moving into has previously been used as a clan lab, contact your local council’s environmental health officer or your local police station. Methamphetamine laws and penalties Methamphetamine is a class A drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act and therefore attracts severe penalties. Manufacturing, importing, dealing and possession for supply can lead to a life sentence. Possession of five grams of methamphetamine (a tablespoon) is enough to warrant a conviction for possession for
supply. Those caught importing the precursors of methamphetamine (pseudoephedrine and ephedrine) without a licence can attract jail sentences of up to eight years. Possessing a pipe or utensil for smoking methamphetamine is also an offence and can result in a one year jail term or a fine of up to $1000.
What you can do about methamphetamine. If you have information about offences relating to methamphetamine: Contact your local police station - or contact the organisation Crime Stoppers anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
Getting help If you or someone you know is having problems with methamphetamine, other drugs or alcohol, it is important to know there are people who can help. To find out more about methamphetamine, its risks and effects, visit www.drugfoundation.org.nz
