y r i fa l a v i fest 2017

This years’ Fairy Festival Welcoming Party was a bit different from previous ones, as the fairies brought a bit of rain and wind with their rainbows this time. But this didn’t dampen the spirits or the crowds that came to experience the magic of the Ellerslie Spring Fairy Festival and Pirate Welcoming Party that was held on Sunday 10 September. Throughout the morning, fairies and pirates roamed the streets, entertaining and spreading magic and wonder to the awaiting kids. It was a truly magical morning despite the bad weather. We saw the return of the Peter Pan stage show again- which is always a favourite. This year entry to the show was by gold coin donation with all the proceeds going to a very precious local girl called Ella to help her get to St Louis for Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy surgery and get up on those fairy feet and walk! Visit: givealittle.co.nz/cause/fairysteps4ella for more info. With the welcoming party over, the fairy magic stayed alive throughout the month of September with the Fairy Door Trail and Pirate Treasure Hunt. We also held a Fairy Guided Walk on the 17 September. Our two amazing fairies, Fairy Strawberry and Fairy Sweet Pea took the kids on a hunt to find fairy doors around Ellerslie Town Centre followed by a wonderful morning of fairy and pirate craft hosted by Christ Church. The festival would not have been possible without the help of our wonderful Volunteers, Sponsors and funding providers. Special mention to Orakei Local Board, Trillian Trust, NZCT, Lion Foundation, Four Winds, Ellerslie Community Patrol and Café Melba for their continued support.

Chairmans Message

T

he Festive Season is upon us with Christmas decorations appearing in our village and elsewhere, a reminder to all of us of the busy period ahead. Pre Christmas pressures dilute our free time but it is important to try to remember the goodwill of Christmas and to make time to share the goodwill with family and friends and people we meet in our daily lives. It can be difficult at times but extremely rewarding when we try.

The General Election is behind us and I congratulate Denise Lee, our local National Party member who successfully won the Maungakiekie electorate vacated by Sam Lotu-liga. Denise is a loyal advocate for Ellerslie and I wish her all the best for her future in Parliament. On a smaller scale but important to Ellerslie, our business association recently held the AGM and election of the board. I congratulate and thank the successful officers, Murray Wells of Jolly, Duncan and Wells; Sandra Lees of Caci Clinic; Jo Voordouw of Harcourts,

Aaron Telfar of Mike Pero; and new to our board, Rhys Mountfort - property owner and Heather Turnbull of Flight Centre. I appreciate the confidence of the Board in being elected as Chairman once again. It is an honour for me to serve the Ellerslie Community. Our Ellerslie Village and Main Street continues to grow, improve and show prosperity. It is wonderful to see the preservation of buildings and the reenergising of existing businesses. Ellerslie is enjoying growth from new and exciting businesses adding variety and making it a diversified destination to visit. I would like to thank each and every one of the businesses for making Ellerslie the village it is and for enhancing its reputation. Please remember to get behind the Santa Parade with your family and friends, Sunday 3rd December. I wish each and every one of you very best wishes for the Festive Season and most importantly keep safe and enjoy this very special time.

resentatives news from our local rep

I

It wasn’t that long ago that I stood outside the gates of Ellerslie School wanting to rush back in to grab my five-year old daughter I had just dropped off for her first day of school. Many emotions flowed that day. She’s a teenager now but so much of her life has been spent in and around our village. This is home for my family. With all that we’ve been involved in - chairing the local board, running town clean ups, undertaking small business makeovers, becoming the newly elected MP n is particularly rewarding. It is a privilege to be your elected Fairy Festival fu representative because I am doing so and serving you in a community I know and love well. The Ellerslie polling booth was one of the strongest results for me and I can’t say thank you enough for your support. I will work hard to keep earning and retaining your trust in the days ahead. If you’d like to discover a little more about who I am and what has shaped my journey to get here, head over to watch my maiden speech to parliament on my @DeniseLeeMP page on Facebook. Alternatively, google ‘Denise Lee Maiden Speech’. I have also started a series called #MaungakiekieMoments – a tribute to the incredible people and places of our community and that too can be found on my facebook page. Regular contact lines are live now and I will be opening a new and accessible office in the near future. Wishing you all the best for the fun Christmas and New Year’s season ahead – see you at the Santa Parade! Warmest regards, Denise Lee, MP DeniseLeeMP@parliament.govt.nz

I

write this having just past the milestone of ten years in local government and one year as your Auckland Councillor representing the Orakei Ward. This last year has been challenging without a doubt, but I thought I would share some of the results. Let’s start with the good. In this year’s budget (the first Phil Goff led budget), ratepayers from the Orakei ward received the lowest rates rise since 2010. We have also had a 2.5% rise in the Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC). The higher the UAGC, the less dependent the rates bill is on the Capital Value of a property meaning that this is good for anyone paying rates on a property valued at more than the regional median (i.e. most of the Orakei Ward). Councillors also allocated an additional $200m for infrastructure investment into this year’s budget, bringing our total investment over $2billion. This is the highest investment in Auckland’s infrastructure since amalgamation. Locally, I’ve supported the new Orakei Local Board by increasing their budget by millions to assist the delivery of more projects within our ward. Sport has benefitted with additional funding for community use at the ASB stadium in Kohimarama and the realization of years of work ground breaking to build the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre on Tamaki Drive for a number of water sports. We have designated funding for improvements on Mt Hobson (Ōhinerau) via the Tūpuna Maunga Authority and achieved the long awaited go ahead for improvements to reduce flooding on Tamaki Drive. As chair of the Quality Advice Programme we have set higher expectations for staff to deliver reports to elected members that are accurate, concise but yet containing all the information required – key for good decision making. I have also been directly involved in evaluating the value for money ratepayers receive from Council activities. This has

T

he arts are well represented and flourishing in Ellerslie – ranging from performing arts, visual public art to the beautiful heritage windows in the venerable Christ Church. These together with a range of heritage buildings all give Ellerslie its special character. Ellerslie’s comprehensive art works feature in the schedule I am currently compiling of significant sites in the Orakei Local Board area, principally on Council-owned land. To date there has been no comprehensive record done before. The need was highlighted when a few years ago a number of plaques were stolen for their scrap metal value and some heritage objects and sites were vandalised. There was generally no record of the text or photograph of the item. In addition, with the passage of time, staff turnover and lack of records, the reason for a particular commemoration has been lost. As a result of this inventory, some plaques, long neglected and indecipherable, have been restored, and sites and objects have been re-discovered and recorded. Wherever possible, background information and photographs of interest have also been included to provide some context for the item. I have not included scheduled heritage buildings and trees which are listed in the Council’s Unitary Plan. Some sites with war memorials have been included in the Orakei Local Board’s companion document World War I Roll of Honour, which the Board prepared in 2014 for the WWI centenary commemorations. This can be found on the Board’s website. As part of my research and working with the Ellerslie Town Centre Manager, I have gathered information and photographs of Ellerslie’s public art which I will be including : the evocative ANZAC verse and poppy mural on the war memorial hall, the detailed mosaic on the adjacent building, and especially the many mosaics at the pedestrian Bridge of Memories, telling the story of Ellerslie as a place reflecting the past and present. Art is

involved staff and industry experts concentrating, on four key Council areas; Water, Waste, Communications and Engagement and, Investment Attraction & Global Partnerships. Indications are that savings from this work could be at least $337m just these areas. But it hasn’t all been good. For three years in a row the wider Council group has blown the staff budget, we are behind in delivering below the ground infrastructure to service today’s needs and road congestion continues to cost billions of dollars in lost productivity. The new parks maintenance contractors have made a bad start too. This is really disappointing as we changed the model so that maintenance would be delivered more efficiently. Sadly we have been let down by the management associated with this. From November, parks contractors will be monitored weekly as they work to improve delivery and achieve their agreed service levels. In conclusion, I’ve had a few wins but there is still much to do. The new government will have an impact on Auckland and it will be interesting to see how both Phils (Mayor Phil Goff and the new Minister of Housing, Urban Development and Transport, Phil Twyford) plan together. Remember, the mayor always needs ten Councillors to support him on any vote. To that end, the second year supporting you as your Auckland Councillor promises to be very interesting. Desley Simpson, Councillor Ōrākei Board PS- If you would like to be included in my monthly newsletter distribution contact me on desley.simpson@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

also in the water feature in the town square. There is also the mural painted by students at the pedestrian underpass, which I had the privilege of helping to unveil at the beginning of this year. Previously I have mentioned the art in the heritage windows of Christ Church. Recognising the worth of the building and its windows to the local and wider communities, the Orakei Local Board recently made, as part of its Local Grants Round, a grant of $12,500 towards a quantity survey and feasibility report to support their protection and preservation. Community is very important and this is reflected in the grants the Board has made recently to the Ellerslie Business Association towards the costs of the Ellerslie Fairy and Pirate Festival, the Ellerslie Santa Parade and ARTerslie, and to the Ellerslie Theatrical Society towards venue hire of the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. In August I attended productions at the Stables theatre for the Ellerslie Festival of One Act Plays, presented by the Ellerslie Theatrical Society. I thoroughly enjoyed the plays and would encourage you all to support your local theatre groups. Looking ahead, the Board has now approved its three year Orakei Local Board Plan 2017. I am grateful for your input which will guide the Board to where we should focus our efforts and investment in the next three years. With best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas and New Year. As always, it is a privilege to serve you on the Orakei Local Board. Colin Davis, Chairman, Ōrākei Local Board.

Ellerslie Magazine

My philosophy around food is that preparing a meal and eating it is all about sharing with others. It is about more than just the meal. In our family, we bring to this time past memories and future hopes and a space to connect and communicate. As a culinary coach and mentor. I simply wish to instill a love of cooking and creating in others. I have been lucky enough to have spent most of my life travelling. For me, the easiest way to experience another person’s culture is to immerse yourself into their food and it’s flavours, and the aromas pouring out of the kitchens as you pass. I first ate banana pancakes in Indonesia. They were divine and I looked forward to them every morning, with freshly made natural yoghurt and flaked palm sugar. In Bali these miniature pancakes were studded with slivers of banana, pressed into the batter. The centres are gooey and warm, the edges buttery and crisp. Hot, sweet and absolutely moreish, these are a perfect start to the day or an afternoon treat. Kids love to prepare them and flip them. Let them try this recipe by themselves and aim for a breakfast in bed, what a treat!

1 cup self raising flour a pinch of salt 1 cup coconut milk 1 egg 2 small bananas, peeled and sliced melted butter, for frying zest of 1 lime, to serve

Serves 4 Prep Time: 5 minutes Cook Time: 15 minutes Vegetarian

Lime Burnt Butter: 200g butter 1 lime, juice and zest To make the pancakes, mix together in a bowl the flour, salt, coconut milk and egg. Lightly whisk together with a whisk. Let your batter sit for 5-10 minutes before cooking. Use this time to slice your bananas thinly. If they are too fat it will be hard for the pancake mixture to cook, so make sure they are nice and thin. Heat a crepe pan or fryingpan to hot and dollop in a little butter. Once the butter is frothy, add in a ladle of pancake mixture. Gently press in some of the banana slices and allow the pancakes to cook on the underside. Do not be tempted to flip your pancake early. When the surface is covered with bubbles and the edges look dry, flip the pancake and cook the other side briefly, before removing from the pan with a spatula. To make the lime burnt butter, pop the butter into a stainless steel pan and place over medium heat. The butter will start foaming at first, and then, as the foam subsides it will start to turn brown and smell nutty. Turn off the element and pour in the lime juice. Stir and then pour out of the hot pan into a jug for serving. To serve, drizzle the warm pancakes with the lime butter and dust with a little lime zest.

Get ready for some holiday cooking

To avoid unleashing a force of chaos in your kitchen, take the following steps to have your kitchen ready for the upcoming burst of energy.

1

Have ingredients all ready before you get started. Where appropriate, have them all laid out neatly on the bench top in order of use. Older kids can do this themselves.

2

Equipment can be pulled out of cupboard and utensils chosen for the particular recipe. This saves sticky fingers needing to open drawers and cupboards to source things half way through.

3

Do one recipe at a time. Read through the full recipe before getting started. Double check you have everything you need ready to go.

4

Always wash hands, and benches and clean up as you go. When something is cooking, use this moment to have a drink and look around for something to tidy or clean. Then at the end of the recipe you can relax and enjoy the aroma and flavours in a clean kitchen!

Have fun and relax this is holiday time!

Wendy sold us our first house in 2008, so for us she has been a constant in the local market since we moved in. Recently we were looking to purchase our next house and Wendy went above our expectations to help us make the right move, she help us find our new home and then did a great job selling our property in under 3 weeks. If you are looking to move in the local One Tree Hill or Greenlane area Wendy has exceptional experience and knowledge, she is someone you can trust and she works hard. We highly recommended Wendy both as a buyer and seller. Thanks Wendy.

Wendy recently sold our home in Stonefields and we can’t say enough good things about her. She was incredibly professional, hardworking and diligent throughout the process. She consistently went above and beyond to help us and nothing was ever too much trouble. Her experience, passion and people skills shone through and we wouldn’t hesitate to list with Wendy again. Thoroughly recommend her to all! - Mr & Mrs Harrison

- Steve, Hollie & Oscar! We listed and sold within 3 weeks, whilst exceeding our price expectation. Wendy communicated very well through the whole process and I have no hesitation recommending anyone looking for an agent in Wendy’s area get in touch with her and see for themselves, they won’t be disappointed.

Thank you so much Wendy for all your help, advice and patience! Wendy is the ultimate professional, so helpful and has a great sense of humour too. I would recommend anyone needing to sell or buy their house - contact Wendy! - Mike & Rach

friends of the philharmonic orchestra Here it is almost the end of 2017 and we have only one more of our extremely popular Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall left before the summer holidays. We have listened to some extraordinarily talented young musicians just on the threshold of very promising careers together with some more seasoned players from our excellent Metropolitan orchestra. It is such a privilege to be able to enjoy such wonderful music so well played and then to listen to conversation between articulate members of the “Friends” and various internationally famous conductors and musicians. We watch them conducting and listen to them playing in the concert hall and tend to put them on a pedestal as though they are slightly larger than life.

People who want to gain confidence in speaking to groups improving their speech vocabulary, listening skills, evaluation skills, should very seriously consider joining a Toastmasters Club. You get to learn at your own pace in a positive supportive environment, you make great friends, you have loads of fun, which is a great recipe for learning vital skills in Communication& leadership. Meetings are held fortnightly Tuesday mornings 7.00am at 169 Ladies Mile Christ’s Church Facility For all inquiries contact Diamond0752@yahoo.co.nz

Really they lead lives just like we do, with the added difficulties imposed by the constant travel between London, Berlin, Sydney, Auckland etc. It sounds exciting but most of these people have wives and children who stay at home and occasionally see each other. Quite often all they see of the country they are in is the inside of the hotel room and the rehearsal room and concert hall. Sometimes they have time to spend with us at Ellerslie and we can chat with them over a sandwich or a cup of coffee. Anyone can become a “Friend”. The subscription is only $30 per year and the entry fee to a Friday morning is $12. And you have the added advantage of receiving the 6 monthly programme so you know which Friday to come along. If you are not a member the entry fee is $15. All the fees go to assist our orchestra. The only qualification you need is a desire to be there. Most of us are not musicians and a lot of us do not know a lot about music but just like listening to it. Come along and join us. Ring Bryce 379 4446 for more information.

The importance of a grounded education Steiner education is a global education movement that crosses culture, language and geographical locations. In over 65 countries and growing steadily, this educational philosophy, which is almost 100 years old meets the needs of students for today and tomorrow. Students in Steiner schools learn through a holistic, broad-based education, where they are encouraged to use all faculties, not just intellect, but their imagination, creativity and critical thinking. They do this in a digital-free environment in early childhood and the primary school years. It is not until they are in high school that they use digital technologies. By this time, they have mastered many essential life skills without the use of digital devices. Once introduced to digital technologies, students are taught to be discerning users, selecting appropriate technology as a tool for learning. Digital technology is an exciting field of human endeavour and it empowers us in manifold ways. The escalation of complex technologies is increasing at fascinating speed. It provides many opportunities for learning, but also challenges us increasingly to remain human in a world which is fast being blitzed by artificial intelligence and robotics. Whatever technology a child learns in kindergarten will be obsolete by the time they are in middle school, therefore Steiner educators teach skills where young people learn how to be incorporate their learning into new situations, to find solutions to problems, to be social, to understand what it is to be human, to learn to draw, design, make and create in crafts and handwork, garden, experience music, drama, movement, games: to experience life itself rather than through a screen. What use is an architect that doesn’t understand projective geometry and can create beautiful designs by hand, who truly understands how geometry and architecture relates to music and mathematics? What use is an engineer if they can’t use a forge and understand the basic properties of iron? Too often today, ‘experts’ in their field are only experts through the software they use and largely lack practical application and understanding. At Michael Park School in Ellerslie, the early childhood and lower school teachers lay the foundation for lifelong learning - through a uniquely human and richly choreographed education. As the students’ leaning journey continues into high school, they quickly learn to incorporate digital technologies effectively, creatively and most importantly, ethically.

21

A visit to the school might see kindergarten children making cubbies, hammering, sawing or rasping. In the primary school children learn to knit in their first year on two needles and by Year 6 are knitting socks on 5 needles. They also learn to crochet, sew, weave, garden, felt, model or make a variety of useful objects and tools in the outdoor classroom. In the high school you might find a student working hard using physical strength at the forge, or shaping a beautiful vase on a pottery wheel, painting, drawing or engaged in set design in a drama production. The use of our hands develops our imagination, provides us with opportunities for learning through rich experiences, trial and error, success and failure, determination and perseverance. Steiner students use digital technology in the high school to create documentaries, study photography, use laptops and the internet for research and present work digitally when required. However, Steiner teachers realise the importance of technology being a tool for learning, one that should be introduced when students have the maturity for discernment and the ability to use this vast amount of information at their fingertips in ethical ways. Students are discouraged from using social media and use digital devices in the high school classroom when the teacher believes this will provide an opportunity for learning. It is used thoughtfully, and parents are encouraged to support the school’s philosophy at home. This means for parents, not being attached to their phone or iPad 24 hours a day, but taking the time to listen to their children, to find quality family time. This is important for us all if we want to raise young people in our society who can relate socially to others. Steiner education provides a grounding in real activity, an opportunity for children and young people to experience life through all their senses. There is a balance between thinking, feeling and will-based activity. Social and emotional development is given an equal weight as intellectual and physical development; dexterity of hand work and ability to make beautiful, useful objects is an opportunity not to be missed. Somewhere along the way educators have fallen prey to the lure of digital technologies as the only way to teach, otherwise fearful that students will be left behind. Steiner schools have the opposite approach. Leave digital technologies until high school so that students have the time to develop those skills that others may never learn. Let’s not take away their childhood. Theresa Piraccini Principal

Upcoming 2018 trips include, Cornwall park & Kelly Tarltons – Come along and share the fun...

ellerslie play centre Looking back over the last few months that have passed at playcentre, a swarm of memories flow of all our “big kids” that have recently graduated from playcentre. Over the years, we have joined them weekly in play with fun, laughter, conflict, tears, noise and mess. Whether in the sandpit, the doctor’s bed, at the playdough or collage table, through gloop, slime, paint, hoses and water, insect hunting, fruit and vege collecting, baking, story telling or the playground, we have nurtured, educated and learnt - with them and from them. And over time, we have merged into quite a family. So it is no wonder that we feel such sadness in waving goodbye to our big kids. But along with this, is a great sense of pride and excitement, especially in seeing how ready each of our kids are for school. How much they played, learnt and developed. But how fast they have grown. And how great they all are.

For each child soon to graduate from playcentre, they get to choose a leaving trip. In the last few months, we have been on a double decker bus to the Auckland museum, visited Ambury Farm, had a bush walk and campfire with roasted marshmallows and hunted for wildlife at the Tahuna Tureo reserve and, more recently, have had a trip to the zoo - with an exclusive session for our older kids. Our upcoming trips include a gymnastics session, Cornwall Park and Kelly Tarltons. A few weeks ago, we had our ERO review. It is intended that a formal report will be provided in the next few weeks. In the meantime however, we have received some feedback from the review which included comments about how relaxed and happy the children are, that they are confident problem solvers who drive their own learning, that the experienced members provide strong modeling for newer members, and that

adults listen well to each other and the children. We are proud of our centre and are grateful to all our members for their contribution. As we wave goodbye to our big kids, we are also pleased to have new families join us. Playcentre welcomes new members with children aged from 0-6 years. For children aged 3 years and above, we also have a separate “shooting stars” session which children can attend without their parent. These sessions are lead by our wonderful play inspiring group leaders. We are all grateful to them, and feel privileged in knowing that our kids will have a great session each Thursday. If joining or visiting Playcentre sounds like something you and your child might be interested in, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please email us at ellerslie@playcentre.org.nz or visit our facebook page for more information.

“The stained and painted glass windows of Christ Church, Ellerslie, have outstanding cultural heritage value” – Dr Christopher Thompson, Design Historian

christ church DISCOVER A NATIONAL TREASURE RIGHT HERE IN ELLERSLIE THIS CHRISTMAS It has been an exciting time for us here at Christ Church! We had a blast when around 120 kids and parents came to make some fairy and pirate crafts with us at the Fairy and Pirate festival! Fairy wands, bunting, pirate hooks and parrots were happily constructed and lots of parents got their craft on and made some too! It was such a wonderful event to be a part of so thank you Ellerslie Business Association for the opportunity and our Fairy Vicar and her team will be dreaming up more fun ideas for next year. We started a fundraising launch for our restoration and preservation project (more details below) with a Victorian afternoon tea! Various people from the art and heritage world, as well as various local groups, joined us for the afternoon. After a presentation about our project, and time to appreciate the windows, our guests were served a high tea of various Victorian treats by maids in full get up! It was a wonderful time to playfully imagine what the times were like when the church was built, but also to look to the future, and understand what we want to protect for the coming generations. OUR WINDOWS: A NATIONAL TAONGA In Christ Church, we have a beautiful set of Clayton and Bell windows – the only full set in New Zealand! Clayton and Bell were a world-class glass making company who were often commissioned by Queen Victoria herself, and their windows feature in the chapel at King’s College Cambridge. Our windows are a national taonga to be treasured and protected. Sadly, the windows are deteriorating due to inadequate ventilation and protection. We are starting a building project to preserve the windows. This involves their cleaning, restoration, and proper protection. It also necessarily requires repairs and repainting of the historic church housing them to ensure water-tightness. Given that the church was established in 1883, the windows and building have survived pretty well so far, but now is the time to ensure their protection for the future! THE RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION PROJECT: WE NEED YOUR HELP! As members of the community here in Ellerslie, give a little gift to Ellerslie this Christmas and donate to our givealittle page – every little bit helps! Help us to protect iconic Christ Church and the national treasure it holds as a gift for the next generation. givealittle.co.nz/cause/christchurchwindows WINDOWS THAT TELL A STORY Our windows tell not only the story of the life of Jesus but also the story of a young man and his respect for his mentor. Albin Martin, a founding member of the church, in his years in England, had nurtured the artistic talent of a young Alfred Bell. Bell later formed the world-class company Clayton and Bell. When the church was erected here in Ellerslie in 1883, Martin wrote to Bell asking if he had any spare glass which they could use to put in the window frames. A year later, instead of the scraps of glass they expected, a full set of beautiful ‘Clayton and Bell’ windows turned up free of charge. A beautiful testament to the gratitude for the influence of a wonderful mentor. The Reverend Rebecca Heale, BA/LLB/MTHEOL, Vicar of Christ Church 09 579 5279 www.ellerslieanglican.org.nz

ellerslie play centre What a great day we had for our annual Ellerslie Playgroup trip to Butterfly Creek! All the kids slipped, slopped and slapped and enjoyed a great morning out in the sun. We visited the aquarium, the butterfly house and Goldie the huuuuge crocodile! The farm animals were a favourite, with the kids getting up close and personal with animals and farm equipment. They even got to hand feed the lambs and llamas! We capped the trip off with a fun train ride through the dinosaur jungle and a big play in the playground. Ellerslie Playgroup is run by parents and caregivers of preschool children. It’s subsidized by Ministry of Education funding, which means the weekly cost is only $4 per family, which includes craft supplies and morning tea, as well as free reign on our great selection of toys and books, and a fun music session. Ellerslie Playgroup is a great little community for both parents/caregivers and children. It’s a relaxed, supportive, volunteer run group, held on Tuesday and Friday mornings from 9:30-11:30am, in Leicester Hall behind the Ellerslie shops. If you’d like to join Ellerslie Playgroup, pop along for a visit or email ellerslieplaygroup@gmail.com.

Tools for Schools a great success Ellerslie Rotary Club member, David Broadhead, has started an exciting new project to help school students and their families in the Fiji. “Tools for Schools” was started after last year’s devastating Cyclone Winston when villages were flattened and struggled to get rebuilt. David, working closely with local Men’s Sheds groups, is now collecting old and 2nd hand tools, wood for tool boxes, building equipment and even generators which are then packed into a container and sent to Fiji, thanks to another Club member, Ian Jenner. Having the gear means that students can now learn basic building skills in the classroom that they take back into their villages. This will make a huge difference to their daily lives as well as being better prepared during the cyclone season. Ellerslie Rotary is involved in a number of local projects but we also support on-going and vital humanitarian work in the Pacific Islands. If you are having a clear-out and have tools that you would like to contribute to Tools for Schools, please contact David Broadhead on dbroadhe@xtra.co.nz If you would like to find out more about your local Rotary Club, we would like to invite you to a breakfast meeting on Friday at the Ellerslie Conference Centre. Calling all Grandparents! Trying to think of a unique present for your little grandchildren this year? Why not gift them a membership to the Ellerslie Toy Library? A membership with the Toy Library is like having Christmas throughout the year, with new toys every couple of weeks. Or alternatively, join up yourself and get some toys for entertaining the grandkids when they come to visit. More new toys have hit the shelves of the library recently, thanks to the grants and donations we have received from Lotteries Commission and The Warehouse Bags for Good programme. Thank you to these organisations for their support. Some of the new toys are pictured here but check out our Facebook page for more. And keep watch – there are more to come!

Alison Thomas began teaching Tai Chi in Ellerslie in 2005 with ‘The Falls Prevention Tai Chi Programme’. Trained as a fitness instructor, a very experienced as a teacher, Alison is confident she can help anyone improve and maintain balance. Anyone of any age can practice Tai Chi and get benefits straight away. You can practice Tai Chi while sitting or standing. Alison recommends if you are unsure if this exercise is suitable for you to consult your Doctor. Most Doctors will be very happy to recommend it. Tai Chi strengthens you physically and reduces tension. The flowing movements will help you become more flexible, strong and will leave you feeling energized yet tranquil.

The Toy Library will be closed over Christmas, with our last session for 2017 being Saturday 16th December. We will open again on Saturday 13th January 2018. So if you are not yet a member, get in quick to sign up and take home some toys for the holidays. Simply come in during one of our session times (see below) and speak to our Librarians.

Better balance reduces the risk of falling by 47% in older adults. It may also help you avoid serious injury if you have a fall. Falls are the leading cause of death from unintentional injury for both men and woman. Falls are mainly caused by: muscle weakness, poor balance or vision, lack of confidence, and the effect of medication.

Ellerslie Toy Library is located at St Peters Presbyterian Church, 7 Harrison Rd, Ellerslie and is open Wednesdays 7-8pm or Saturdays 9-11am. We have two membership options – Duty Membership (including 4 library duties a year) at $110 or Full Membership at $190.

Alison holds Tai Chi classes: Monday from 11 am-12pm, Wednesday from 10 am- 11 am, at Leicester Hall, 20 Findlay St Ellerslie.

The library caters for families of children aged 0-5 years. We have over 600 quality toys, puzzles, games and learning activities for members to borrow to support your child’s development. These include large ride-ons and outdoor play equipment, balance bikes and scooters, dress ups, Duplo, train sets, role play toys, construction sets, cars and trucks and musical instruments.

ellerslie school 2017 marks the 140th year celebration of Ellerslie School’s opening. Founded by Mr Robert Graham in 1877, we are now one of the oldest primary schools in New Zealand. Throughout our lives, we are members of different communities based on our interests, beliefs and similarities. Whether it be a family, school, sport, musical or spiritual community, a sense of belonging is important. It helps shape our lives and, in some cases, our decision making. Feeling part of a community occurs when we are willing to contribute and be involved. Our school community has always been strong; one where all members, whether they be parents, staff, extended family, or others from the wider Ellerslie/Mt Wellington community, are encouraged to be part of our children’s learning and growth. The importance of reminding us of our history cannot be underestimated and our 140-year anniversary gives us time to pause and reflect on how far we have come. Students have been studying the theme of “Celebrations” in their Inquiry units this year and during celebrations came to school dressed in period costume representing the decades since the school’s foundation. This was followed by a wonderful community event on Saturday 11 November where there was live music, food trucks, vintage cars and tours through decorated pods. It was a fantastic celebration of our school’s rich history. Lunchtimes at Ellerslie School are full of varied and fun activities at our Passion Clubs. Subjects such as French, Yoga, Rock

28

Painting, Lego, Indoor Football, Chess and Scottish Dancing are on offer for students to try different hobbies. Eunice L. (Year 8) who participates in Chess, says it gave her the chance to learn how to play, and have fun with others. The Ellerslie School Choir recently competed at The NZ Choral Federation’s “The Kids Sing” competition at the Auckland Town Hall and gained a silver award for combined Junior and Senior Choirs. This as an amazing achievement for our choir which has shown tremendous growth in numbers as well as increasing the difficulty in our repertoire of songs. Thank you to our wonderful music teacher Mrs Winder for co-ordinating the 200+ students involved in this experience. Thanks to the efforts of our hard-working Fundraising group and donations from the school community, a brand-new sandpit is now complete. We are very appreciative of the support from our parents and wider school community as they work tirelessly to provide new initiatives and experiences for our students. We have a very busy programme during Term Four with Junior and Senior School’s Athletics Days and Year 7 and 8 senior students attending school camp at Port Waikato. Also, events such as the Eastern Zones Volleyball tournament, APPA Choir performances and School Prizegiving will be highlights of term. We look forward to welcoming many more new families to our school and the area for 2018.

I continue to be so proud of the achievements of our students, whether in their academic studies, sporting, cultural, music, performing arts or other pursuits. Our unwavering emphasis on student achievement continues to make a real difference and our NCEA results for 2017 are tracking to once again reach new heights of success. This high level of academic attainment is testament to the high quality teaching and learning programmes on offer at One Tree Hill College. Since the last edition of the Ellerslie Magazine, there have been a number of moments to celebrate for students at the college. “It’s great to see so many ex-Ellerslie players go on and do exciting things with their careers...”

ellerslie afc At Ellerslie AFC we have a proud tradition of producing good young players who step up to higher levels – our best example is Michael Boxall who spent most of his pre-teen years at the club and now plays professionally in America as well as for the All Whites. Other current professional players include Myer Bevan and Niko Boxall. Andre de Jong who has spent time in a semi-pro league in Australia is currently back in NZ playing for (and starring) for Eastern Suburbs in the National League, and our latest success story is Keegan Smith who at 18 years old is the #1 keeper at the Wellington Phoenix this season. It’s great to see so many ex-Ellerslie players go on and do exciting things with their careers and over labour weekend the club were able to celebrate a whole new generation of future stars as Ellerslie AFC won their maiden National U19’s title in Napier. The team was made up of a mixture of players from our First Team, Reserves, U19’s and U16’s – with a large contingent also playing together at Sacred Heart College. Results on day 1 saw Ellerslie win 2-1 against Lower Hutt and then 2-0 against local rivals Onehunga Sports before another 2-0 win over Waterside Karori, on Day 2 first up we had a massive game against Birkenhead who are rightfully considered heavyweights in this competition having won it 3 times in the last 5 or so years, this was the only game of the tournament we didn’t win as we

notched a credible 1-1 draw against the competition favourites. To finish off pool play on Day 1 we got stuck into Tawa and finished off with a 4-0 win which was enough to put us through the to the Quarter-finals as group winners. That meant we finished off day 2 with a quarterfinal against Manurewa AFC who had come out of their group without conceding a single goal – it meant a very tight game, and true to form at the end of regulation time we were 0-0 and faced two 7 min periods of extra time. Our depth shone through as did our fitness as we were able to grab 2 goals in extra time to win our way through to the semi-final against Hamilton Wanderers on Monday morning with a prized place in the final on the line. We were wary of Hamilton Wanderers who had beaten Birkenhead in their quarter-final and we didn’t want to fall short of our goal at the penultimate step – so the boys came out fired up and equalled our best scoring game of the tournament with a 4-0 thrashing of a good Wanderers team, with the highlight a sharp double from livewire winger Allan McBride. That result meant we were setting history as the first Ellerslie AFC side to reach the National U19’s final, and we were keen to make one more piece of history and bring back the trophy for the club. In the final against a very slick Wellington Olympic team we started well but couldn’t quite put together a scoring chance, however at the other end of the

field we were being really threatened for the first time in the tournament as Sean Dartnall in the Ellerslie goal was being called upon for plenty of work. When Wellington Olympic opened the scoring with a nice move that ended in a dinked shot over Sean the pressure really started to build, Olympic took advantage of that and quickly doubled their lead with a simple finish at the back post after some excellent build-up play through the middle. Halftime couldn’t come quick enough for Ellerslie as they targeted a comeback in the 2nd half – and they didn’t have to wait long as Ellerslie won a penalty very soon after halftime which was converted by skipper Dylan Horgan for his 4th goal of the tournament. Rowan Corbett was next on the scoresheet as he tapped home after a sweeping move from our backline all the way forward to level the scores. The goal of the game came from Denny Twigg as he picked up the ball in midfield and drove towards goal before unleashing a left foot curling shot that left the Olympic keeper with no chance and gave us a historic win in this prestigious tournament. We can’t thank all the people involved in this success enough, the parents, the coaches, physios and players etc – a massive achievement and we all look forward to seeing some of the names below go onto bigger things in football sometime in the future, just like those Ellerslie players before them have! See you all in 2018.
