Camping trips, the staple Kiwi summer getaway. Whether you are road tripping with friends, glamping with a loved one or packing up with family-mover with bikes, scooters and body boards to spend a few nights sleeping in a tent and cooking on a camp fire it is the ultimate holiday for many. We are fortunate in New Zealand to have a range of camping alternatives on our doorstep, so all you have to do is seek out the right destination for your summer camping trip, drive safely and make the most of the time without interruptions to unwind and de-stress.

Coromandel Coromandel township is approx 2.5hrs from Auckland. Try out one of the many freedom camping spots along the 85 km stretch. See www. thecoromandel.com/ assets/TourismOperators/docs/ TCDC-FreedomCamping.pdf
Lake Paringa Camping at a conservation campsites (DOC) is a getting back to basics experience. Lake Paringa is a small lake 50 k’s north of Haast on the West Coast of the South Island. Get back to basics and walk the Haast to Paringa cattle track.

H
ow is it this time of year already? Perhaps it seems harder to fathom as at the time of writing this we are yet to see summer weather, though its wonderful having strawberries appear in stores. As the countdown to Christmas is on, its very easy to get caught up in the busyness and stress of it all and forget what it’s all about. I’ve heard many Americans speak of how Thanksgiving is their favourite holiday with its focus on gratitude and being together. I try to keep this at the forefront of my mind at this time of year, a chance to reflect, to be grateful for my many blessings and also to try to pay it forward a bit. I know from speaking to many people in this community many others do the same, including making donations, gifting goods and and it is wonderful to see that spirit evident in our Ellerslie Businesses and community. If you are looking to add some extra Christmas magic into your life make sure you come along to our iconic Ellerslie Santa Parade on Sunday 4th December. Now into its 19th year the parade is a great way to see the magic of Christmas through a child’s eyes and celebrate the many community groups that make Ellerslie a fantastic place to live and work. Speaking of fantastic places to work, recently I was lucky enough to attend the Westpac Auckland Business Awards with Lin Guo, owner of the Ellerslie Four Square. Lin and his team were finalists in 3 categories including Employer of the Year, Excellence in Customer Service and Best Emerging Business. The level of business talent

was simply outstanding and Ellerslie Four Square had more nominations than any other business present. Those of you who shop at Ellerslie Four Square will have no doubt experienced for yourself what a fantastic store Lin and his team have developed and we congratulate them on this wonderful achievement. As we come to the end of the year, I hope it’s been a good one for many of you. We have seen quite a bit of change this year in our community and in Auckland as a whole, but I feel there is a sense of optimism and vibrancy about what next year will bring. Thank you to all who give so much of themselves to Ellerslie, I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and New Year surrounded by the love and laughter of the people you cherish. Cheers Megan

Yes it is true – you can see anything that goes on in any room of the Standard Hotel. With floor to ceiling windows, and direct sight from The High Line or the viewing platforms at the new Whitney Museum, there is nothing hidden. Today that is just what we are seeing, we are all pointing, and not at the ten or so maids we can see at work in various rooms on various floors, but at the naked guy three floors up and four rooms across. The Standard Hotel is famous for its place in Chelsea astride the now famous High Line, but don’t leave the curtains open if you have something to hide! The Standard is also home to one of the best places to have a cocktail and watch the sunset over the Hudson River, the famous Boom Boom Room. Book ahead and be prepared for $20 US cocktails, but what an experience. All this sightseeing and talk of food makes me hungry and thirsty. New York is a never ending feast of sights, sounds, smells and movie highlights. No matter how long you spend in the city that never sleeps, there is never enough time to see and do everything. Dinner at the ‘Brooklyn Diner’ on 57th Street, breakfast at ‘Jams’, and real coffee (and a lobster roll for lunch) at the Chelsea Market are all stops to keep the sustenance up while on a sightseeing spree!
8
Brooklyn is another place on the must see highlights – grab a kiwi style pie at ‘Dub Pies’, and a real Flat White, and stroll into Prospect Park then walk the Brooklyn Bridge from the Brooklyn side for nonstop views back to Manhattan for a fantastic afternoon out. Around Museum Mile and Central Park there is nothing like a bagel at the Jewish Museum, then some Viennese cakes or afternoon savouries in ‘Café Fledermaus’ in the lower level of the Neue Galerie to keep you going between museum stops. The old worldly Plaza Hotel on 5th Ave at 59th Street now has a foodcourt in the basement – and along toward Columbus Circle there is “Le Pain Quotidien’, one of many scattered around NYC, and great for breakfast. Of course the city is full of high end restaurants, and cool and hip bistros, and of course, the original dive bars. A great selection of craft beer will be found at ‘The Jeffrey’ on 60th Street East. Original photos of the good and the great from the history of Punk Rock and Rock n Roll can be found at ‘Manitoba’s’ on Avenue B, and nearby is a fantastic dumpling stop. If it is hip you want and you find yourself strolling through SoHo a visit to ‘Jacks Wife Freda’ will often require a wait, a cramped table, but an amazing vibe and rewarding food!
This is New York! There is always so much more to see, smell, eat and drink than time permits – make the most of every Big Apple moment.

CORNWALL PARK
CORNWALL PARK THE ULTIMATE ESCAPE FOR CITY DWELLERS
T
he vision written over a century ago for one of Auckland’s most iconic public parks by a savvy businessman - known as the ‘Father of Auckland’ – remains as relevant today as ever. In 1901, Sir John Logan Campbell, gifted Cornwall Park to the people of New Zealand with the intention to provide a space for people to escape the “hustle and bustle” of Auckland city life. Aucklanders, young and old, know Cornwall Park well. The heritage, the space, the trail walks circling to the summit of One Tree Hill and the lambs in springtime … the list of popular attractions is endless. With summer here and people coming out of hibernation, the 220 hectares of land starts to crawl with families and friends spreading out picnic blankets, setting up makeshift soccer goals and firing up one of the 10 free barbecues – six wood burning and four gas - dotted across the park. Of course you can always bring your own gas barbecue if you miss out. During the daylight savings months the legacy of Sir John Logan Campbell is in full flight. More than 4
million visitors come through Cornwall Park during the year, and two thirds of these visit during the day light savings period. The majority of these visitors are indeed there to relax and unwind from the daily demands of work and family life. The calendar of formal summer events offered by the Cornwall Park Trust Board caters for the demand offering everything from kite days to music in the park evenings. The gates that barricade the historic stone brick archways giving entry and exit to Cornwall Park open promptly at 7am (ready for the early morning fitnesstypes) and close at 9pm as the sun dips behind the volcanic cone. Staying true to the wishes of Sir John Logan Campbell who was one of the first European settlers to Auckland, the park is administered by The Cornwall Park Trust Board at no cost to Auckland ratepayers. There are 23 staff who oversee the smooth running of the park with responsibilities from business management to pest control, environmental conservation, event management, education, farm caretaking and tourism.

One Tree Hill Domain Maungakiekie and the summit are actually not part of Cornwall Park. These are under Auckland Council ownership. The Stardome Observatory and Sorrento in the park also fall under the One Tree Hill Domain boundary. The Cornwall Park loop is 2.9 kilometres and takes 40 minutes to walk. It takes 40 minutes to walk from the Cornwall Park Information Centre to the summit, and 30 minutes to walk from the children’s playground in One Tree Hill Domain to the Cornwall Park Information Centre. Approximately three quarters of the park is located across Greenlane and one quarter to the north of Greenlane including the sports fields for Rugby, League, Bowls and Tennis.

This December Just for the month of December the Stardome Observatory are running a special edition of our seasonal night sky show. With a Christmas Night Sky show that has all your favourite astronomical highlights with extra Christmas sugar and spice. Take a seat under Auckland’s largest snow globe and find out about the astronomical significance of the Christmas star, learn more about the Christmas tree in the sky and as always, pick up some astronomical knowledge to show off during the Christmas party season.
You can now check out the two new interactive displays in the Space Gallery & Exhibits area. In the History of Spacecraft display, great historic moments are recreated with toy bricks. The display highlights technological advancements and human bravery with scenes of Yuri’s courageous orbit, the epic Moon landings and the astronauts on the International Space Station. Space Tracker looks forward at leading current and future space missions. Nine interactive screens will display three different missions. The first screen shows a blue print style image of the craft, satellite or telescope where you’ll be able to learn more about the important instruments and equipment aboard. The second screen is a curated news feed with images, video and news items from mission websites and social media platforms. The final screen shows more information about the mission, including the launch process and some impressive statistics.

REMEMBER WHEN this meteorite crash landed in Ellerslie ? Local residents escaped harm when a meteorite burst through their roof in 2004 It has been 14 years since a meteorite the size of a grapefuit came crashing through the family home of Brenda and Phil Archer causing an international media and bidding frenzy on the rock.
WIN
The fragment of rock from outer space came to rest in the living room of the Ellerslie home after ripping a hole through the roof, bouncing off the couch and hitting the ceiling around 9am on June 14, 2004.
A family Starlight Explorer Pass.
The 1.3kg meteorite was offocially named ‘Auckland Meteorite’ despite tradition calling for it to be named after the closest Post Office branch. But the Aussie’s already had an ‘Ellerslie Meteorite’ after a 10.2kg rock fell in Queensland back in 1905. Alarming as the arrival of the meteorite was for Brenda and Phil it caused international media attention on the Auckland suburb and a bidding frenzy as collectors scrambled to secure the four million year old relic. It was reported one American collector offered the family $50,000 for the space rock. The direct hit on the house was a billion-to-one event adding its worth. Brenda Archer was reported at time saying it was lucky the meteorite did crash through the roof – “If it had falled in the garden, it would probably have been added to the pile of rocks I’m taking to the dump. Nobody would have known about it.”
For terms and conditions see www.ellerslie.net.nz
The Archers gifted the meteorite to Auckland Museum where it is still on display in the Origins Gallery.

The Real Cost of Physical Inactivity With bills to pay and a range of costs increasing, it’s not unexpected that we have to look at what we spend and limit where we spend it. When the budget comes under scrutiny it isBy often ourArlidge recreation Anna and REPs NZ and exercise costs or memberships that face being cut along with other ‘non essential’ items. BY ANNA ARLIDGE @ CLUBVO2 HEALTH AND FITNESS AND REPS NZ
However, the cost of your gym membership, trainer or class may be cheaper than the cost long term of not exercising both to yourself in time and money and to our country. New Zealand, along with the rest of the world is facing a dramatic increase of medical and health costs due to lifestyle factors and inactivity. A 2010 survey in NZ commissioned by local councils put the cost of inactivity at 1.3 billion dollars. Inactivity and other lifestyle factors create a serious financial burden, and we aren’t just talking the odd sick day. While the government is picking up the tab in most cases, when it comes to serious illness and disease, we pay in the end through taxes and other costs. The Ministry of Health suggests that up to one third of health loss is preventable, with some of the greater challenges being our diet, physical inactivity and the obesity epidemic. These challenges require more than a well-financed health system, but also a whole of society response. The increase in the waistlines of New Zealanders has led to an increase of health related illnesses. The 2008/09 New Zealand Adult Nutrition Survey found that one in three adults were overweight (37.0%) and one in four were obese (27.8%). With a population of 4.4 million, over 1,000,000 New Zealanders can be classified as ‘obese’. The cost of obesity is in par t its relationship with some serious health issues including Type 2 diabetes, ischaemic hear t disease (IHD), stroke, several common cancers, osteoar thritis, sleep apnoea and reproductive abnormalities which lead to loss of income and stretch our health dollar. Behavioural risk factors (including unhealthy diet and physical inactivity) are responsible for about 80% of coronary hear t disease worldwide. It’s a simple fact that a sedentary lifestyle is one of the major risk factors to hear t disease, a risk factor that is easily controlled through moderate regular exercise. A recent research study from the team at Liverpool’s John Moores University found that exercise not only helps prevent hear t disease, but may actually repair hear t tissue already damaged. The research repor ted in the European Hear t Journal showed that regular and strenuous (enough to make you sweat) exercise may lead to the development of new hear t muscle. The researchers suggest that

THE COST TO REPAIR THE DAMAGE CAUSED BY AN UNHEALTHY LIFESTYLE AND INACTIVITY Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (rechannel blood flow to the heart) $38,000 - $57,000 Cardiac Angiogram (diagnostic test for suspected heart disease) $3,800 - $4,800 Gastric Bypass (a common weight loss procedure) $17,000 - $35,000 Osteoarthritis (a common side effect of diabetes) Total hip replacement $19,000 - $25,000
damage from hear t disease or failure could be at least par tially repaired through 30 minutes of running or cycling a day, at enough intensity to work up a sweat. According to the Mental Health Foundation there is increasing evidence linking physical activity and improving mental health. At least 30 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity on most days of the week can improve mood and decrease anxiety and stress. Physical activity is also thought to have a role in preventing serious mental illness such as depression. It is those feel good chemicals endorphins that hold some of the benefits for mood and mental health. They are the body’s natural painkillers and are responsible for that positive feeling experienced after physical activity. Either we open our wallets for increased government suppor t of lifestyle diseases caused by inactivity, OR we can open up the front door and head to ClubVO2 Health and Fitness where they will encourage you and suppor t you every step of the way, no matter whether you’re a couch-hero or super-hero.

cooling cuties With the days warming up we often think about ways to cool ourselves down in the long hot evenings. But summertime can be equally as exhausting for our pets, something humans forget as we sip lemonade under the air conditioner. While wild animals adapt to the changing weather elements, domestic pets do not and are as susceptible to sunstroke as their owners. In fact many of the same rules apply to our cats and dogs as ourselves. Hydration, rest, seeking shade, these are all guidelines we should follow for our pets too. We’ve got some great tips and tricks from our fellow pet lovers and experts to ensure you and your pets make it through the hottest part of the year.
16
Ellerslie Magazine
Hot summer days are loved by all, but the intense heat can be a burden on our dogs. The young and the old are generally more susceptible to the heat, but it can affect any dog at any time. As the days warm quickly it is recommended to exercise your dog either in the early morning or at the end of the day when it starts to cool down. Outside of these times too much exertion should be avoided. All dogs must have access to shade, shelter and of course fresh clean water at all times of the day throughout the year, not just in summer.
A cool tip to beat the heat is to freeze toys and treats for your dog. These can help to alleviate boredom when left home alone. They stimulate not only your dog physically but mentally as well. The outcome, a happy,
contented and stable dog. A kong filled with frozen goodies can last for hours.

With summertime comes longer days. The ideal time of year to get out and about with your best friend and provide them with the daily exercise they require. This can provide the perfect opportunity to dust up on their training. Training and play can be achieved together, as every dog craves the praise and attention received from you when he/she shows positive behaviours. A fun game to play with your dog is Hide and seek. This teaches your dog to always know where you are and to
keep one eye on you! Always do your training in a safe environment and praise your dog both verbally and with pats. Short training spurts can be a good way to exercise your dogs mind, once the sun is up and the day is too hot to venture out and about. Even several minutes of concentrating can be effective in burning some of their everlasting energy and can be done easily in your own back yard. Put your dog on their lead and perform heeling, encouraging your dog to look up at you and give you all of their focus. Your dog will enjoy this training time with you and you of course will benefit from their good behaviour. A win win situation. These sessions also help to deepen the bond between you and your pet. Summertime is a season to feel good, a happy time of year. Combining exercise, training and stimulation will help to make your dog a calm and balanced canine and together summer will be a fun time to share together.

Fromhtahie r Johnc Rennell I can’t believe 2016 has gone so quickly and it isn’t just my age group who agree – it seems all ages find the days fly by with the busy lives we all lead. Christmas decorations are visible everywhere reminding us of the busy and enjoyable festive season ahead of us. The really important challenge is to make time for family and friends to share the goodwill of Christmas.

Our LED lights in the Norfolk Pines will be in Christmas colours and of course the Santa Parade through the village on 4th December is always a highlight. Our businesses and community participate and the parade draws people from outside Ellerslie and is an opportunity for us all to showcase our village and the community spirit we all enjoy.
The sharing of presents is traditional and rewarding for us all. I urge everyone to explore the Ellerslie Village for a unique shopping experience, the diversity it has to offer whether for that ‘special gift’ no matter how large or small, food, wine, dining etc.
Recently I attended the induction of the Orakei Local Board. It was encouraging to see familiar faces who have served the community well re-elected and our Business Association looks forward to working with them and new members of the board. Congratulations to Desley Simpson for her successful election to the Auckland Council and it was excellent to see her representing the Mayor at the induction.

hank you to all those who voted. Being part of the democratic process is important. In doing so, you have decided who will represent you on Auckland Council for the next three years. Whilst voter numbers for all of Auckland were low ( 38.54%) Orakei polled much higher (47.9%) Sadly still over 50% of our ward chose not to vote at all. Our Orakei Ward has had many changes as a result of the elections. In case you have missed the results, we have a new Mayor, a new Councillor and a new Local Board. The mayor and the 20 councillors make decisions the affect all of Auckland, such as developing regional strategies, setting budgets and deciding rates levels. The Local Board is the community interface. Local boards have a significant and wide-ranging role; they make decisions on local matters, provide local leadership and build strong local communities. They focus on local plans and services such as maintaining local parks, supporting community arts, culture and events, and advocating for new and upgraded facilities. Phil Goff has been elected as the second Mayor of Auckland. Officially he was sworn in on November 1st at the Auckland Town Hall along with 20 Councillors. Our new governing body Councillor is Desley Simpson who was the former Orakei Local Board chairperson from 2010- 2016 The Mayor has decided on a new committee structure. There are three major committees of the whole. Finance and Performance chaired by Cr Ross Clow, Deputy Chair Cr. Desley Simpson, Planning chaired by Cr Chris Derby, Deputy Chair Cr Denise Lee and Environment and Community chaired by Cr Penny Hulse, Deputy Cr Alf Filipaina. The sub committees are Community Development and Safety, Strategic Procurement and Audit and Risk. There are also three committees reporting to the governing Body (Mayor and all Councillors) Civil Defence

and Emergency Management, Appointments and Performance review and Regulatory. As well as sitting on each committee of the whole Council, Desley has been given the following responsibilities by the Mayor: Deputy Chair of Finance and Performance Committee, Deputy Chair of Ngati Whatua Orakei Reserves Board, member of Community Development and Safety Committee, and a member of the Auckland Town Hall Organ Trust. The three major committee chairs and deputies along with The Mayor and deputy mayor have been appointed as the new Council “cabinet”. The Orakei Local Board has four new members and three re- elected members. Re-elected were Kit Parkinson, Troy Churton, and Colin Davis. Carmel Claridge, Toni Millar, Ros Rundle and David Wong are the new board members and they were sworn in on November 3 at St Chad’s Church. The Local Board have voted to share the Chair and Deputy chair positions split over the course of the 3-year term. The initial Chairperson position will be filled by Colin Davis and the subsequent Chair will be Kit Parkinson, who will also take up the role of Deputy in the first 18 month period. Newcomer to the board Carmel Claridge will succeed Kit in the role of Deputy in second 18 month term. It will be an exciting and challenging time for all elected members and we look forward to hearing updates from them as 2017 will see a foc us on local plans the term progresses. and ser vices for Orakei Wa rd

Summer is fast approaching and there is much to look out for in our local area. The recent Spring Fairy Festival and Pirate Party in Ellerslie was a great event enjoyed by all who attended. Michael Park School held their summer fair and we eagerly anticipate the Ellerslie Santa parade. One of the real highlights for me was the official opening of the new $10.4 million, 24 classroom block at our SAM LOTU-LIGA oldest school – Ellerslie School. Principal Lisa Harland, board chair Tara Robinson, families, friends and students enjoyed seeing the new facilities in action. They will provide a great hi-tech learning environment to promote better educational opportunities for our kids. I also hosted an Ellerslie fundraising breakfast to promote awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness month. Sadly 8 women per day are diagnosed with breast cancer in New Zealand and over 600 lose the battle every year. We enjoyed pink muffins and raised over $800 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. I congratulate our local councillor Denise Lee (formerly Krum) on being re-elected to her position on council after a strong and positive first Fundraising durin g term. I also congratulate new councillor Breast Cancer Aw areness month from Orakei, Desley Simpson who was formerly the Orakei Local Board Chair. Finally, I congratulate Phil Goff on his election as Mayor of Auckland. He has a big job ahead. I look forward to working with them all as your elected representatives to improve the wellbeing of local residents. An issue that is seriously affecting local residents is the noise from SH1. I have met with local residents, the residents association and understand first-hand the nature and extent of the problem. I have advocated to the Minister of Transport, NZTA and AT on transport issues in the area. I am disappointed no action has been taken by NZTA to alleviate residents’ concerns and I will continue to press for action. We know transport remains an important issue. It was good to see work has begun on the East-West Link which runs across our area. This significant event was attended by the Prime Minister John Key, Minister of Transport Simon Bridges, and Councillor Denise Lee. The project will cost $1.8bn and will provide important transport links for both local residents and businesses. I was privileged to accompany the Prime Minister for the opening of local business Baxter Healthcare’s new aseptic compounding pharmacy. It is a new $7m investment into the local area for which they were conferred the American Chamber of Commerce investor of the year award. This is yet another sign of a growing economy and the increasing opportunities there are for local people from expanding businesses. Finally, the Government announced a surplus of $1.8 billion in 2015/16, up from $414 million in 2014/15. The New Zealand economy has made significant progress over the past eight years. This delivers more jobs and higher incomes for New Zealanders and also drives a greater tax take to help the Government’s books. Government surpluses are now rising and debt is falling. This puts us in a position to be able to make some real choices for New Zealanders. It will alsoallow us to invest in better public services like the Police, health and education as well as much needed infrastructure for future growth and jobs. Over the next 10 years, it’s estimated $18 billion will be spent in the construction and infrastructure sector here in Auckland. You need only head down-town to see the number of cranes in the sky to catch evidence of that. Auckland is growing like gang-busters and a smart city would take advantage of growth to ensure stability when things aren’t so rosy. That’s my focus in this new Council term. Our city needs to head towards a high wage economy and a low rates burden. The good news is that international sources have confirmed we have theenvironment to do this. The Legatum prosperity index of 149 countries recently ranked us first, ahead of Norway, Canada, and Australia. We are praised for our open market with strong structural foundations and interestingly, they note we have the strongest society in the world with 99% of kiwis saying they could rely on family and friends in times of need. What more could you ask for when living in a fast-paced growing city? I know that’s the way many of us feel about the village feel of Ellerslie too. It’s the perfect place to meet and greet and connect. Your new Orakei Councillor Desley Simpson and I, together with our respective Local Boards are here to serve you. Thank you for supporting us in the recent elections and we’ll see you at this year’s fantastic Santa Parade. Warmest regards, Councillor Denise Lee (formerly Krum) Denise.Lee@aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

This spring Ellerslie Playcentre embraced Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week by an organised clean-up of our neighbourhood. At the end of Term 3, children and adults rolled up their sleeves and headed out to Lawry Street to pick up rubbish. Before getting started, we had lots of discussion about what we can to reduce our impact on the planet. It was great to see the children talking about recycling and showing an interest in making a difference. One of the areas where we focused a lot of effort on was Lawry Reserve, a place that our children are lucky enough to use for regular outdoor activities including treasure hunts and bush walks. We were very surprised with just how quickly we filled our bags up with rubbish and so close to our centre. Our community clean up turned out to be a fun and valuable experience for the children as they learnt first-hand about the problem of littering and the importance of caring for their environment. This type of hands on learning experience is what we value highly at Playcentre and is just one of many activities we take part in as an active group within our community.

ellerslie theatrical society Here we are, almost at the end of yet another year. Our final production in the Stables Theatre has ended. The wardrobe all put back on the hangers and the props all sitting on the shelf waiting for next time. But, before the next play starts in March 2017 there is one more event before 2016 finally ends. Yes, you guessed it, the float in the ever exciting Ellerslie Christmas parade. Plans are being discussed and themes put forward but you will have to come on the 4th December to see what we decided to do. After that comes the frenzied shopping, Christmas celebration with families, the New Year and, before you know it the theatre is back into rehearsal for the first play of 2017 which opens on 16th March, 2017.
Get those new diaries out and mark the date! Going back to the aforementioned frenzied shopping, here is a way to reduce some of the “frenzy”. All you need do is ring Rona 525 3336 and ask for 1, 2, or even 3 annual season subscriptions. Each one covers a ticket for a night of your choice for each of the 4 shows we will produce during the year and 1 glass of good wine for half price during the chosen evening. The cost is only $88! A saving of almost $20. We will send you a special card in time for Xmas. So simple. Yes, you know you want one for yourself, so get another one and all come together. We can even do a card for a birthday if your friend has one between now and 16th March.
Now it is time to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a good year to follow during which we look forward to seeing you in The Stables Theatre on the corner of Arthur St. and Main Highway.

Before The Lights Go Up
T
he final curtain call has ended, the stage lights dimmed, the applause now silent and the Stables Theatre stage bare. Well almost, the maginificent set for Waiting in the Wings remains standing tall and intact. The set, which required a team of builders and handymen weeks to erect, is often the final piece of theatre to disappear after a season show by the Ellerslie Theatrical Society. Building a set is just one of many key behind-thescene tasks required for a community theatre group to operate and perform throughout the year. The Ellerslie Theatrical Society is lucky, they have a
dedicated group of volunteers who build and design sets, design costumes and ensure the finer details of a performance run smoothly. For ‘Waiting in the Wings’ by Noel Coward – the society latest production which ran last month (November) - including volunteers from the newly formed Auckland East Mens Shed. Coward’s story is a tribute to theatre set in ‘The Wings’, a retirement home for actresses. May Davenport considers herself the resident’s leading lady, until her old rival Lotta Bainbridge arrives at the home. In the face of the real problems of growing old, can they overcome their differences? The stage set for this was 7.5 metres wide by 5 metres deep. It was considered a traditional lounge setting complete with a sweeping staircase. It was
one of the more challenging sets to build and design for the community hall space as the stage has no space on the wings and flying space. Translated, this is theatre speak for rigging or pulling gear into the ceiling.
Coward agrees, claiming the real stars of the show are often behind the curtain being creative. He says to act you just have to “remember your lines and don’t trip over the furniture”.
This play also consisted of a sitting room for retired actress’s with doors leading off to a terrace, a television room, an office plus the sweeping staircase that leads to a unseen bedrooms.
The Ellerslie Theatrical Society plays in the Stables Theatre in the Ellerslie war Memorial Community Centre. The theatre was moved from Pakuranga in 1983 to its present setting in the community hall and is the only theatre in the Orakei Ward. The society produces four plays per year in March, June, August and November, see over for next years calendar.
Set designers work closely with directors and sit in on several readings of the play with the actors. This helps set designers understand the period the play is set in, how the actors will move across the stage and the details in design to create another world. It is often said in theatre circles that set designers and builders often know the script better than the actors and directors as they need to anticipate each actors actions, both on and off stage in every single scene.
31
As with many community groups, the society is always looking for new talent to join. Both on and off the stage. If you would like to try your hand at helping build or design the next hit show at Stables Theatre contact the Ellerslie Theatrical Society.

friends of the auckland philharmonic orchestra Our 34th successful year draws to an end. 34 years of watching and helping our wonderful orchestra Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra grow from the remains of the collapsed Auckland Regional Orchestra. Next year there will be several events marking our 35th year. It has been exciting watching our orchestra grow from a rather uncertain infancy into a promising teenager to the highly professional international standard we listen to today. What did we “The Friends” do? In the old fashioned New Zealand way we baked and sewed and held raffles and garden parties and did mail outs and persuaded people to buy tickets for concerts. Gradually as the orchestra grew and could afford office staff our role changed, but is still significant and needed. What do we do now? Directly obvious assistance is seen when we sell programmes and man the information table at concerts. Behind the scenes we provide interval supper for the players with special trays for the visiting soloists and conductors, Auckland is the only place in the world where this happens! We organise buses from Howick, Pukekohe, Waitakere and Takapuna to make it easier for people to attend concerts. We support advanced students giving them opportunities to play to an audience on our Friday mornings in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall and our Sunday Showcase concerts. These events also help to raise funds for the mentoring/educational work members of the orchestra do. There are too many other things that crop up to be done, like making cardboard violins for Sistema and paper helicopters for music which needs special effects.

Developing Self-Determination and Resilience in our High School Students Our students’ final year at Michael Park is a busy one. They complete their NCEA level 3 and University Entrance through their elective subjects and achieve very highly. They experience a wide range of Main Lessons concentrated lesson blocks held daily for the whole class, with full immersion in a single subject for 3 or 4 weeks - such as Architecture, Philosophy, Modern Chemistry, Ecology, Modern History and Astronomy all of which are cultivating a global consciousness within the students. In addition, they also undertake the Class 12 Independent Project and socioecological activities. The Independent Project is conceived by each individual student to be personally challenging and involves a research component and a practical component which are reported on in writing. At the end of term 3 students mount an exhibition describing their project and give a public speech on what they have achieved. This event showcases what our students are able to achieve at the end of their Steiner education. It is through this combination of elective subjects, Main Lessons and personal challenge via the Class 12 Independent Project that our students are able to develop their capacity to impart purpose and direction to their lives. They also focus on managing a heavy workload in a healthy and well-balanced way including through their support of each other. The socio-ecological activities give the students an opportunity to pay back to the school community and wider community in a range of ways often involving social group activities and volunteer work. This year some of our Class 12 Independent Projects include free diving, photography using traditional methods, mindfulness, developing a sophisticated science fiction franchise including a book, artwork and merchandise, martial arts, learning to DJ, competing in an international sports event and publishing a wholefood recipe book.

Most people would have seen, and eaten a Rotary Christmas Pudding in its distinctive decorative tin, but what you probably didn’t know is that it’s your local Ellerslie Rotary Club that looks after the sales and distribution of the puddings throughout the whole of New Zealand. At this time of the year, club members are gearing up to promote the puds to other Rotary Clubs as a fundraiser, as well as selling them ourselves to friends and businesses. Then we are busy getting them to both ends of the country in time for Christmas. ellerslie residents association Motorway Noise barriers for Ellerslie. Why do Ellerslie school children have to protect their ears as they walk to and from school? Why do residents worry about their safety as they walk to the train and bus? Residents feel that the increased traffic on the motorway produces increased noise. The ERA has written to our local MP urging action and Sam has passed our concerns to Minister Bridges but we have had little response to this apart from an assurance that “NZTA are looking at what more can be done”Now, in conjunction with the ERA, a ‘ ginger’ group of Findlay and Hewson Street residents has formed to look at the options we have to fight and ensure that motorway barriers are constructed to alleviate the noise problem. There is also a significant safety factor as the present low barriers do not stop anything thrown out of cars passing by, or worst still, they will not stop a vehicle crashing off the motorway. The group is building a database of affected residents so that they can communicate this situation to everybody concerned. If you want to support this action kindly email your name and address to ellerslieresidents@gmail.com with Noise barriers in the subject heading and the group will add you to the database. police talk
With the upcoming summer holidays approaching, and people leaving Auckland to various vacation hot spots, it’s important to take some time to prevent yourself from becoming the victim of property crime while away. • Always lock up. Burglars often enter through unlocked doors and windows or they take advantage of weak locks. • Install good quality locks and use them. Check that you will be able to escape easily in a fire or other emergency. • Use a reputable locksmith. • Lock the front door if you’re in the back garden. • Lock your house if you are having a rest or doing something that needs a lot of concentration, such as studying or sewing. • Lock away tools and ladders because burglars could use them to break in. • Lock garden sheds and your garage if you can. • Sensor lights are an excellent security device because they light up automatically if somebody moves nearby. • Keep windows secure. • Guard your keys. Don’t have personal details on your keys
(such as your name, phone number or address). Don’t leave house keys with your car keys when your car is being serviced. Home security checklists before you go away this summer: • tell your neighbour when and where you’re going • cancel mail, paper etc • give your neighbour a contact phone number • put a light/lamp on a timer • curtains open, blinds up • turn telephone ringer sound down • lock all doors, close all windows. Ask your neighbour to: • watch your house & clear your letterbox • close your curtains at night • use your clothesline and driveway occasionally • report any suspicious behaviour. Identify and mark your valuables
Burglars are unlikely to steal items that are permanently marked because they’re hard to sell. To claim insurance you must prove you owned any stolen items claimed for. Keep receipts, warranties, valuations and a list of serial numbers in a safe place. Take photographs or videos of jewellery, art works and other precious things. Portable items of high value are the most likely things to be stolen. Engrave valuable items with your driver licence number, car rego number or phone number. If you have engraved your valuable property or recorded the serial numbers of items, Neighbourhood Support can provide you with a warning sticker to put on a window. The sticker will discourage most criminals from taking your property. Operation SNAP Anyone is able to record serial numbers and other unique identifying details of their valuable goods in an electronic database. Remember getting an alarm is only a back-up for locks, labels and lists. An alarm system can detect a burglar in action, but it can’t always keep the burglar out. When a security person arrives to inspect your property, ask to see their current Security Technician or ID licence. If they don’t have a licence, send them away. The law says they must be licensed. Your contract with them must contain a full service agreement, plus warranties for equipment and service. Don’t be pressured into buying something in a rush, or let a company ‘hard sell’ you an alarm system.
ELLERSLIE COMBINED PROBUS
So, a very busy year draws to an end. We have had a good year with new members joining every month and the word has got out that we are a combined probus and we have welcomed some men to our ranks. We have listened to some excellent speakers who have very interesting lives, like a demonstration of patchwork done by people in our prisons, not just women but men too. The fact that the prisoner has made an attractive patchwork quilt which will keep a baby warm gives such a sense of accomplishment to someone who has never had a chance in life. A hilarious account of the early attempts to master a motorised wheelchair with a determined mind of its own, and a talk on keeping our coastline free of rubbish which eventually floats out to sea and is eaten by fish which end up on our dinner plates although it was carelessly dropped on the city pavement. We have also visited interesting places like the Westpac Rescue Helicopter base and a Lavender Farm and on the 24th November some of our members will go to Tiri for the day. Our final meeting in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall will be on the 18th November, after which we will be officially closed until 17th February 2017. However, we will be having an informal lunch on 20th January. If you have been thinking of joining Probus this would be a good time to meet us. Just ring Rona 579 7605 or Val 525 6330 for details of where and when to meet. We would love to see you. We like intending members to attend 1 or 2 meetings to “test the waters” before making the firm decision and paying the annual subscription of $15. Finally, a Merry Xmas to you all and we hope to see many new faces in the new year.

ELLERSLIE school NEW CLASSROOM BLOCK OPENING On Friday 21st October staff, students and the wider community of Ellerslie School gathered to celebrate the official opening of a new 24-learning space block. The school community is delighted to see the improvement a $10.4 million redevelopment has made to their school. “There has been much excitement and anticipation about moving in,” says long serving Deputy Principal Jillian Mitchell. “Students and staff are really enjoying the new classroom learning system”. It is a spacious, calm, welcoming space and is light years ahead of being accommodated in a prefab. There is much passion in the teaching and learning by students and teachers. These outstanding buildings are the
result of a team effort over the last 6 years. Construction began last year to provide Ellerslie School with a new 24-classroom block. 16 of the new classrooms are to replace old relocatable buildings, and the other 8 are new classrooms that will add capacity for the school’s growing roll. The design team included architects Stephenson Turner, Savory Construction and a special acknowledgement to the Ministry of Education, and current and past serving board of trustees members who have toiled tirelessly on the details of this building for the last 3 years. We all feel -we’ve finally arrived and it’s certainly been worth it. A time for reflection, a time for celebration and a time for looking forward.
She would like to offer her sincere thanks to the many members of the school and wider community who have been generous in their welcome, unfailingly friendly, and willing to help Introducing Lisa Harland, the as she settles. new Principal at Ellerslie School Her over-riding impression has been that of a strong sense of community and pride in all that we do. Ellerslie School’s roots lie deep and 139 years of education, and contribution to the wider community is significant to acknowledge and be assured that it is something that she value’s deeply. Lisa comes to Ellerslie School from Reremoana School a decile 9, full primary school (Year 1 - 8) in Manurewa, where she was Principal for 3 years and Deputy Principal for 8 years priors to that. She was also the Head of Year 8 at Saint Kentigern College in Pakuranga. Lisa’s believes education is a shared journey and that the partnership between home and school is pivotal in the success of a child’s education. Lisa is looking forward to working in a positive and supportive team of people. She believes that the Board of Trustees and Senior Management team and staff have a common goal and purpose, hold the same values and seek to serve the community for the benefit of our children. Eastern Suburbs attack Waitakere United’s goal in! … at Michaels Ave
ellerslie AFC eastern suburbs Ellerslie AFC Eastern Suburbs have this summer season been accepted back into the highest level of football in New Zealand, the newly renamed Stirling Sports Premiership. As part of their acceptance into the national league they required to field a team in the National Youth League – a 9 round competition featuring the best young players from all over NZ. Ellerslie is proud to announce that we have joined with Suburbs (as well as Fencibles and Uni-Mt Wellington) to provide elite level players for this youth team, and it’s been a massive success so far! Seven Ellerslie players have been named in the Eastern Suburbs National Youth League squad, and Michaels Ave (the home of Ellerslie AFC) has been chosen as the main home field for the team as well – we hosted a game between Suburbs and the Wellington Phoenix Academy (who fielded ex Ellerslie player Keegan Smith) on the 15th of October, with Suburbs taking a 2-1 win with both Sam and Denny Twigg from Ellerslie featuring. We believe the relationship with Suburbs mean talented young players from Ellerslie and the surrounding areas will now have a pathway from grassroots football to elite national league level –and it’s all right in our own backyard.

ellerslie amateur atHletics & harriers club Our summer season is underway at the Mt Smart Stadium, just 6 minutes’ drive from Ellerslie. The upgraded facilities coupled with the adoption of Athletics NZ Get Set Go and Run Jump Throw programmes have proven popular. The Get Set Go system caters for our junior athletes aged 3 to 6 effectively teaching the fundamentals of athletic movement and skills. As a game based programme the fun element is great for engaging these budding athletes. Meanwhile, the Run Jump Throw system is the foundation programme of the Athletics NZ development programme for senior athletes aged 7 to 14 focuses on the delivery of basic movement patterns. This programme is worked in with our traditional programme of events to capture the best of both. Senior athletes take part in high jump, long jump, shotput, discus and have two running events each night. Athletics is a great way of getting off the couch and improving strength, co-ordination and stamina, what better way to spend a summer evening with your child.

Our Premier side have the services of Middlesex’s Ryan Higgins this year, as well as the coaching services of Kaushik Patel, and are looking to make an impact in all three competitions.
In the May 2009 issue of the Harvard Women’s Health Watch it suggested that while ‘Tai Chi is often described as ‘meditation in motion’ it could well be called ‘medication in motion’’. In addition to preventing falls, Tai Chi has been shown to be helpful for a wide number of medical conditions including: arthritis, lower back pain, low bone density, breast cancer and its side effects, heart disease and heart failure, hypertension, Parkinson’s disease, sleep problems and stroke.
Tai Chi and Balance
Many people wonder how can Tai Chi work and may insist more intense exercise programs are better. Tai Chi is often seen as too gentle and graceful an exercise to have such significant effects and yet the movements contain within them power and internal strength much like the force beneath a slow flowing river. With regular practice, Tai Chi
improves balance by strengthening muscles and co-ordination while at the same time strengthening the mind. Fear of falling often results in more falls: hence, confidence gained through Tai Chi and in ‘not falling’will help to reduce falls. Studies have shown that ‘Falls Prevention’ Tai Chi reduces falls in seniors by up to 45%. Getting started Tai Chi is adaptable to all ages and fitness levels. Because Tai Chi has ‘zero impact’; it doesn’t put strain on bones and joints. Try Tai Chi for a ‘ze ro on joints and bone impact’ s.

VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED TO TURN SECOND HAND GOODS INTO FIRST CLASS CARE Mercy Hospice opened its first shop, a converted poultry store, on 300 Ponsonby Road on 5 December 2005 with the inspired tagline “Turning second hand goods into first class care’’ – a phrase that is still being used by Mercy and other hospice shop chains throughout New Zealand. The decision to open a shop at Ponsonby and Mercy’s seven other shops came down to the need to diversify Mercy’s fundraising. The money raised through the shops enables Mercy Hospice to provide a range of free support and care to patients with life-limiting illnesses. Today the shops sell close to 330,000 items each year raising around $1.3 million towards the hospices annual operating income.

Without volunteers to help run our shops, Mercy could not provide the comprehensive level of free services to people in the Auckland Central area. However it’s more than just the money – the hospice shops provide a valuable community hub and our shop volunteers play a vital role in promoting public understanding of Hospice and the importance of raising funds through the shops.
We are currently looking for volunteers who have half a day per week to volunteer at our Ellerslie Hospice Shop at 188 Ladies Mile. You can help us make a difference for those in our community needing end of life care by Turning second hand goods into first class care.
