issue one Welcome to the first issue of the Ellerslie Magazine of 2018. Hopefully you will have already noticed our new look and masthead. We are excited to be able to launch the new Ellerslie brand, it’s a project we have been working on for a little while now so its great to be able to finally share it. We have worked closely with local graphic designer Tonia Hill of Crisp Graphics on our design and are delighted with the finished product and our new tag line Ellerslie Village – Discover and Connect. We feel Ellerslie has many great businesses, products and places to discover and it’s a fantastic place to connect on both a business and community level.

The rebrand project has been driven by the adoption of our new Ellerslie Business Association Strategic plan for the next 5 years. We were very fortunate to have local resident Jonathan Cameron from Elevate Commercial Partners develop this plan with us. Though it has business objectives the association recognises that the crux of what makes Ellerslie special is the community in which we are based. Our vision is “To be the town centre of choice that embraces being a modern and contemporary “village”. To be a place where businesses, residents and workers want to live, work and play and to become known as an iconic place where visitors will want to stop, visit and enjoy.” Overall, we are seeking to “maintain the integrity, heart and soul of Ellerslie and ensure that the vibrancy that has been created and
that the connections the wider community has with Ellerslie are both enhanced and amplified further.” We aim to achieve this in many ways including events, activities and beautification and community projects. In keeping with our plan, we were delighted to welcome the installation of some new artwork on the Chorus utility box at the entrance to the Robert Street Carpark. Created by the artist Component, this artwork is an initiative organised and funded by the Orakei Local Board. We think it’s a fantastic addition and not only brightens up the streetscape but also acts as a deterrent to graffiti. In keeping with the artistic theme, though it seems a long way off now keep an eye out in May for our ARTerslie event. This event will run through the whole month of May and will bring new artworks, competitions, exhibitions, events and the ever-popular schools art exhibit. More information on the program can be found closer to the time on our new website www.ellerslievillage.co.nz Finally make sure you check out the page in this issue about Ellerslie – Make Give Learn, a community group initiated and supported by the Ellerslie Business Association to bring people together for initiatives that serve our community. What a wonderful summer we have experienced with some of the hottest temperatures recorded in New Zealand. Hopefully your batteries have recharged for another year ahead. Children are back to school and the daily family routines will quickly merge in to autumn, winter, spring and before you know it another summer to enjoy. Our seasons bring various sporting entertainment for participation or as a spectator. This summer our Black Caps won 13 matches in a row but the spell was broken at Eden Park against Pakistan. Penny and I went to that T20 game and what a wonderful evening it was even though we lost. Public transport was free for ticket holders and operated like clockwork. Friendly helpful staff there and back and no delays. What an advantage it is to have a railway station in Ellerslie. As our motorways become more congested our railway station and bus services will help to anchor the future of Ellerslie Village and ensure our growth. The responsibility now lies with all the interested parties local and national to plan and develop to cope with the imminent growth of Ellerslie Village and other transport hubs in Auckland City. As your Business Association we are committed to work with all stake holders and in particular Orakei Local Board, Auckland Transport and Auckland Council to achieve planned growth for our unique village. Recently, the Business Association upgraded our website which you will hopefully find informative and user friendly, with a new web address www.ellerslievillage.co.nz . We have also established a new brand for Ellerslie which will be evident in this magazine. This has been driven by the adoption of our new strategic plan for our village. We look forward to progressing new community initiatives and
beautification projects in the future as part of this plan. Writing this article, I am distracted by the commentary of the Winter Olympics. I am amazed at the talent of Kiwi’s participating on the international stage, punching well above their weight in so many ways - sport, arts and industry. There are too many name. Remember New Zealand’s total population is smaller than many international cities and yet we are number one or near the top in so many aspects. Our wonderful country is blessed in so many ways. We enjoy freedom of choice and accessibility to participate in whatever goal we wish to achieve in all aspects of life. We need to encourage our young people to believe in themselves, be motivated by those who have achieved and follow their dreams. One of the most high-profile entities attached to our village is Auckland Racing Club. With their Events and Conference Centre, Thoroughbred Racing and initiatives such as the Pop Up Globe Theatre we appreciate the many thousands of people they draw to Ellerslie Village. The Auckland Racing Club will hold two of their major race days in March with the Group One New Zealand Derby on Saturday 3rd March and the prestigious Group One Auckland Cup on Saturday 10th March. Auckland Cup Day will be the last Race Day of the season and will be one of the biggest days on their calendar with entertainment and celebrations planned. The track will be closed during winter for a major upgrade. I encourage you to support them - it will be great day. We need you, the Ellerslie Community, to support our local businesses and help to grow our unique and wonderful village. Belated Happy New Year to you all and best wishes for a wonderful 2018.

The sun definitely shone over the past couple of months, and for someone who loves a bit of wakeboarding, an afternoon barbeque, or a good day out with my two girls, I couldn’t have been happier. Summer is well and truly underway. I trust you all had a relaxing break with loved ones and now ready to take on the work and school year ahead- I know I definitely am! I’ve come back from my holiday energised to represent the mighty seat of Maungakiekie within the New Zealand Parliament, and I’m looking forward to working hard to deliver for you and for our communities over the next three years. As a new MP, I know there’ll be many ‘firsts’ for me. Attending Rātana celebrations and officially being welcomed onto the upper marae at Waitangi to mark the 178th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty are a couple that I was extremely fortunate to be part of. I know there’ll be many more and I’m excited at the prospects of what they might be. It’s a popular time of the year as we enjoy festivities and commemorate iconic cultural events. In addition to our Waitangi celebrations, the Chinese New Year festival was held, which saw the coming together of our Chinese community and greater Auckland. We have such a rich culture here in New Zealand, and Maungakiekie is no exception to that. In my travels, it’s been encouraging to see families, schools and local businesses embrace the diversity that surrounds them. Our team has arrived back at Parliament and the political year is underway. It’s great to be back on deck and well into what will be another busy year. I’m excited to be a member of the education and workforce select committee and contribute some work to this space. When back in the electorate, I’ve been working on opening my office and getting it ready for you to come say hello! This has been an eventful process, but I’ve loved walking up and down the

Town Centre during it and seeing the community come to life. The cafés are constantly full, the roads are busy and artwork is forever popping up. I’m discovering more and more that I love about our village. A big thanks must go to the Ellerslie Business Association and town manager Megan Darrow for fostering a vibrant township that is growing strongly for our families and our young people. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continuous support and encouragement. Please do not hesitate to contact me or drop by my office anytime. Council has also been recently faced with some major environmental challenges such as Kauri Dieback disease and introduced pest species. On top of that, Auckland has the sad label of being the ‘world’s weediest city’ because of our high number of invasive plant species. Ratepayers and residents are being asked whether they wish to contribute to specifically targeting issues such as these with a Natural Environment targeted rate calculated using your capital value.

It’s been a busy start to the year with Council lodging resource consent for the Americas Cup Village and preparing consultation material to ask Aucklanders their thoughts on how rates should be set and spent for the next ten years. Whilst we ask you to think ten years out, the reality is the first three years are the most crucial, as by law, the ten year process needs to be repeated every political term ( 3 years) The consultation covers a very wide range of topics and proposals which I can’t cover fully in this column, so I’m going to touch on the 3 main ones ; General rates and the UAGC (Uniform Annual General Charge), new targeted rates and funding mechanisms, the proposed Fuel tax and the Orakei Local Board’s initiative. 1. Rates/UAGC- Broadly speaking, Council’s draft proposal seeks to constrain general rate increases that fund the bulk of Council’s investment and activity, to 2.5% for years 1 and 2. The UAGC is also set to rise 2.5% to $414 for 2017/18 and another 2.5% in 2018/19. This will be the highest UAGC Auckland Council has ever had. Remember this is ‘good’ for our ward on the whole, as the higher the UAGC, the lower the proportion of rates needed to be calculated on your property’s capital value. 2. Targeted rates – The draft plan also adds options for additional targeted rates to increase council spend 2 areas - Water Quality, and Natural Environment. Sadly we still have sewage overflowing at times into our harbours as past investment in water infrastructure has struggled to match the growth our region has faced. In my opinion, this is unacceptable in a city such as ours, and a problem that which needs urgently addressing. The Water Quality Targeted rate proposal suggests raising and using this additional funding, to specifically reduce the amount of wastewater overflows. What do you think about paying additional rates based on your capital value to solve this problem?
The mayor is also asking Aucklanders to also consider a Regional Fuel Tax. Unlike the other two suggested targeted rates, it’s not yet clear exactly what projects this tax would fund. We are currently waiting for the new government to confirm their transport policy and at time of writing this hasn’t been completed. The draft proposal is to replace the previous set levy of $113.85 per residential property with a Regional Fuel Tax of $0.10/litre of fuel to help address transport issues. 3. Orakei Local Board Initiative. The Orakei Local Board has chosen as their number one initiative, the popular north south connection to the Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive shared path at Gowing Drive. In the past, even though the Orakei Local Board have put up projects well supported by our community, they have been unfunded due to a lost vote around the Town Hall table. I’m hoping to change that. Finally, you will remember that independent revaluation of all Auckland properties was done in November last year. Whilst we all know Auckland is expensive, overall revaluation showed that the value of Auckland’s real estate had increased by a whopping 46% since valuations were last done in 2014! Some properties in the Orakei ward increased significantly more than the overall average of 46% and others less. This means that unlike last year’s clear 2.5% rates increase, the change you see on your rates bill for the year beginning July 2018, will probably not match the 2.5% - some will be higher, and some will be lower. Not everyone likes a high property valuation as obviously it’s the capital value of your home which influences how much you pay in rates. As mentioned, space has meant I’ve outlined just a handful of the items up for discussion this month. Complete information is available on the council website including what the various proposals ( if agreed on) would mean for your property’s rates bill. Information will also be at your local library and through your local Residents Association. My main request to you, is to please take some time and be part of the discussion and let me know what you think. There will be a public meeting at St Chad’s Church and Community Centre March 15th at 7pm if you want to discuss regional issues specifically with me, or see the drop in sessions listed below. A warm welcome to 2018. I trust you have been enjoying the warm Auckland summer and feel refreshed as we embark on the new year. The Orakei Local Board has hit the ground well and truly running - it’s certainly shaping up to be a busy and productive 12 months. During March I invite you to have your say on Auckland’s future. Each year, as part of council’s budget process, there is a review of priorities and activities to ensure we continue delivering the right outcomes. Your input on plans and proposed activities for the Orakei Local Board is vital in helping to shape our future. The Orakei Local Board’s key priority will focus on developing the area’s shared paths network. We are advocating for a walking and cycling link from Gowing Drive in Meadowbank that would join the Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive Shared Path. This link will provide local school students with a safe option to travel to local schools and decrease the number of cars on Kohimarama and St Johns roads. The Board’s advocacy extends to five other key initiatives which I am heavily invested in; • To design a north-south connection from Stonefields to St Johns/Glen Innes as a shared space for walkers, cyclists and vehicles through Colin Maiden Park • Improve walking routes, pest management and native planting, for Kepa Bush and the Pourewa Valley environs • Develop a Local Healthy Waterways Plan to improve waterways and stormwater infrastructure throughout the Ōrākei Local Board area • To identify and improve the amenity and functionality of local centres taking into consideration nearby commercial or residential development opportunities • Improve Tamaki Drive for all users – which will include addressing the ongoing flooding issues - and leveraging off planned projects and visitors to events, I encourage you to get involved and share your thoughts. The Orakei Local Board will be running drop-in centres and meetings detailed here where you can find out more and have your say in person or go online and submit your feedback at have your say at www.shapeauckland.co.nz I hope to see many of you at meetings and and look forward to taking the opportunity to discusss in person your thoughts on shaping our great city and local communities. 9

meet paul walsh community space artist Ahead of Arterslie we talked to Paul Walsh about his contribution to community art and where he’s headed this year.
A self-taught artist from Rotorua, Paul has been creating art for most of his life, and is now being well sort after for his skill. He uses his compassion and skills to captivate many through his art, and is now being recognised worldwide for his talent.

Paul’s many works include T-shirts to help fund-raise for cancer research, memorial walls, art piece dedications for the likes of the late Murray Ball, plus community murals, installations and countless art exhibitions. A man of all trades in the art world, he’s constantly using his art to positively spread awareness within community. When we left Paul he was cracking on with his latest commission. Twelve Village Murals for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, Australia next month. Following on from that we have snatched him up, to do another piece in Ellerslie Village. Watch this space for upcoming news about this piece, plus check out Paul via his website, facebook or instagram. 12

AUCKLAND MINIATURES CLUB Auckland Miniatures Club have been holding their meetings in the Leicester Hall in Ellerslie for about 22 years. We make Dolls Houses in mainly 1/12th scale and also the furniture to adorn them with. We meet every 3rd Sunday of the month from 9.30am to 3.30pm.
CELEBRATING SUCCESS AT THE ELLERSLIE SCOTTISH COUNTRY DANCING CLUB We would like to introduce you to Katherine Uren, a member of our Ellerslie-based Innes Scottish Country Dance Club. Katherine recently passed her Royal Scottish Country Dance Society examination for dancing technique in January which is a great achievement.
Below is the Dolls House we made for our raffle on our open day last July which members of the club had a hand in making by contributing their time and effort to make it a splendid offering. It was won by a lady in Point Chevalier. The scale we work in is not the same as Dolls Houses for children to play with, it is more in the realm of collectors’ items. We will be having an open day on July 15th 2018 at the Leicester Hall from 10.30am to 2.30pm.

Having danced ballet as a child, Katherine starting dancing Scottish five years ago as a social activity she enjoys with all her family. The relaxed atmosphere, marvelous music and teamwork appealed. She was soon devising new dances for Club members to try. Wanting to know more, Katherine set about studying for the written and practical exams set from Scotland. Katherine has scheduled a Tartan Night for Monday 16 April at Stanhope Road School hall during which we welcome you to come along and get a feel for dancing Scottish. Katherine also teaches cello and is a member of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Husband Andrew is also a professional musician, playing clarinets and saxophones. ELLERSLIE MAKE, GIVE, LEARN Welcome to our Ellerslie Make Give Learn page! We are a community engagement group that has come together to bring initiatives and causes that we are passionate about to our community. This may be anything from environmental initiatives to community gardens to art projects. We want to be a place where like minded people can meet with others to make things happen! We have a number of events coming up and our facebook page is a great place to connect with locals and keep in touch with what we do. Wrap Well Waste Less We held our first event before Christmas with a workshop on creative ways to wrap Christmas gifts and reduce waste over the Christmas period. It was a greatly successful night and we were humbled by the turn out. Jane Prebble is a local who has been living in and around Ellerslie for many years. She was born in the UK, hence her love of British fashion, as well as New Zealand designers – we caught up with her for a chat on all things fashion, business and Ellerslie Village.
Coming from a family of creative talent you can see how easy it came for Jane, creatively, to put together her dream space full of gorgeous, clothing, accessories and hidden gems. Her mother, an artist and sister a textile designer, Jane developed her early passion for textiles and fabrics that turned into a career in designer retail fashion. Having travelled extensively Jane found inspiration and delight in stylish fashion boutiques, full of character and charm that were friendly and unpretentious and returned home to create her own boutique of reloved fashion.

Coming up to her first year in Ellerslie Village Jane reflects on her anniversary in the busy boutique. Her son Sam, a graphic artist has been tremendous support as well as others in the community who have helped transform the ex-hair salon into a haven for fashion. She says her loyal customers have been incredibly supportive also, with one customer turned employee - Louise Ngaei, employed as a retail assistant now run’s Lala’s social media.
When we caught up with Jane, we took our model Holly along and Jane went to work to style her effortlessly. Janes hard work is definitely a labour of love, and her customer feedback is testament from joy in finding affordable designer clothes to delight in the ever-changing window displays.
“The hours are long, I work every day sourcing the perfect garments for the store, and have even turned up at 3 am after a sleepless night just to complete the finishing touches and to get on top of it all. I have so many ideas for LaLa, but I have also learnt to gauge my energy levels and to take time as needed before putting my new ideas into action” she explains. One of these ideas was a lingerie evening, wherein a relaxed atmosphere an Intimo lingerie stylist was available for personal fittings
This advice is given with great experience, Janes lifelong love of fashion and fabrics are the foundation for her successful business. Working for NZ fashion icon, Jane Daniels in her Parnell store, Jane was taught the tricks of the trade. Also having spent time as a hair stylist Janes says. “It all goes to helping people to look and feel good, to me it’s a passion”.
We asked Jane who, as a stand out New Zealander, she would like to style, “our Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, as a Kiwi role-model for women and an advocate of New Zealand fashion and sustainability and the environment, we would love to dress our PM. We have dressed the fabulous local MP Priyanca Radhakrishnan, so we definitely have some experience dressing eminent NZ women. As we leave Jane, she is busy finalising her, soon to be opened, Upstairs Parlour, a private viewing space where she has an array of stunning ball dresses, formal wear and even wedding dresses! she is continuously working

ELLERSLIE THEATRICAL SOCIETY January and February have always been busy months for the theatre. Our first show, which doesn’t open until March, is in rehearsal and lighting, sound, and set design are being worked on. Then there is all the behind the scenes stuff to do. For example, all the finances and licences have to be tidied up from last year and put in place for this year and, of course, the annual general meeting to be organized for Monday the 16th April at 8p.m. in the War Memorial Hall. Every club or society is required to have one and generally they are ignored by the community in which the society operates. A.G.M’s. are important because it is the one time during the year that the community is asked for an opinion. Are you satisfied with the way your theatre is run? What sort of plays would you like us to produce? What do you need to do become a volunteer in theatre? Not everyone needs, or wants, to be on stage and there are many other important things to be done to make a night at the local community theatre a night to remember. Come along on the 16th April and have your say.
Our next play will be “The Witches” by Roald Dahl, adapted by David Wood. This scary tale is being directed by Daryl Wrightson and will be enjoyed by both you and your children, be they 6 or 16, so, particularly for matinées Sunday 18th March and Saturday 24th March at 2p.m so gather children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and their friends and book a spine-chilling afternoon at the theatre where children that the witches didn’t like might be turned into mice! ELLERSLIE COMBINED PROBUS 2018 is racing by and already it is March. Your Probus club is not rushing quite so fast but we have had a most enjoyable lunch at the Remuera Golf Club to which many of our members came, some bringing friends who had expressed interest in joining us. I am pleased to say that 3 people joined up and paid their subscription there and then. We always suggest to people who are enquiring about the club, to come along to at least one meeting and one outing to make sure its a good fit before paying the yearly subscription. This is $15 per year plus a one off joining fee of $10. We have some very interesting speakers lined up for the beginning of the year, the subjects range from the History of War Memorial Halls to how to cope with mild incontinence and anything in between.
We have already had a very successful trip up to Goat Island with a trip in the glass bottomed boat to see what life under the sea looks like.
In May we will celebrate our birthday with a group quiz followed by a party morning tea. We are planning trips to Hilary House with lunch at Fisher House. A trip to an Alpaca farm in Pukekohe and a visit to Ryder’s Cinema in Avondale where we will see a film and have a roast lunch cooked in the old fashioned Aga stove. As well as these major events we have a couple of groups who play board games in the Christ Church Hall in Ladies Mile on a Thursday morning. Although Probus organizes this group it is not necessary to be a member to come along and play. Then we have a writers group where members write short accounts of their childhoods so their grandchildren may have an idea what it was like to be a child in 1950’s, and it has not happened yet but there is some interest in a stitching group. Our next meeting will be at 10.30a.m. on the 23rd March where we will talk with the general director of the N.Z Opera about their production of “Candide” which will open that night. Our orchestra will be in the pit. On Friday 27th April we will have a very special meeting where we will meet the children, mostly from Otara and surrounding districts, and two of their dedicated instructors. These people are part of the Sistema Movement which achieves astonishing results with these underprivileged children. The movement was introduced some 6 years ago by the A.P.O. and the “Friends” have watched and supported the incredible change it has made to these children’s lives.
FRIENDS OF THE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA 2018 is definitely here announcing itself with extreme heat and explosive storms. Friday 23rd February saw the first meeting in the Ellerslie War Memorial Hall. We chatted with Veronika Eberle, a well-known international violinist who plays a magnificent 300 year old stradivarius violin. Not exactly the
type of instrument the average violinist would ever see, let alone play! We also had music from people just setting out in their music careers. There is some amazing talent amongst the young people at our universities. Having these people play for us is a win/win situation. We get to hear well played music and the artist is practising playing in front of an audience which is not easy when you are just starting out. We finish these mornings with a finger food lunch and a positive feeling of having experienced a very privileged and entertaining
Anyone can come to these Friday meetings. The door fee is $15 for a visitor and $12 for a member. If you come you may well decide to join us. The subscription is only $30 per year. The only qualification you need is a love of music. You do not need to be able to play an instrument, or sing, or even be able read music. Just enjoy listening to it. Cheesecakes were popular when I was a teenager and I remember making them, trying different variations each time to determine my ultimate favourite. I was initially a lover of the richly decadent baked cheesecake. However, as a busy Mum I am more inclined now to make fridge set cheesecakes which are quicker to put together and tend to be lighter also. This recipe is failsafe and fun for kids to help out with too. You can of course use milk chocolate if you wish for a sweeter version, replace the blackberries with your favourite berry, or use Toblerone chocolate to create a nutty alternative. Ingredients
Method
1 cup self raising flour
First, take a large bowl of cold water and press the gelatine leaves in until they are submerged.
2 x gelatine leaves 50g dark chocolate 1 packet ginger nut cookies 100g butter, melted 1 cup cream
Now, place the 50g chocolate and ginger nuts in a food processor. Process until you have a fine crumb. Add in the melted butter and mix to combine completely. Remove from the machine and press the crumb into lose bottom tart case. In a stand mixer or with a hand held mixer, beat the cream so that it has lovely soft peaks.
2 x 250g Cream Cheese 1 cup blackberries 100g Dark Chocolate, grated 1/3 cup sugar
In a separate bowl, mix together the cream cheese and sugar. Now add the berries and grated dark chocolate. Mix to combine. Take the gelatine leaves out of the cold water and mix with a 1/4 cup of almost boiling water to dissolve. Pour this into the cream cheese mixture. Fold the cream into the cream cheese mixture also. Now pile the creamy berry mixture into the tart case on top of the crumb. Cover and pop in the fridge for a couple of hours or overnight to set.

We’re going online! 2018 is going to be an exciting year for the Ellerslie Toy Library as we will be launching our online toy catalogue. Last year the committee painstakingly photographed all of our 600+ toys ready to be viewed online by current and prospective members.
Dispelling the myth of the ‘perfect parent’ and becoming a community of thriving families Space programme starting at Christ Church, Ellerslie in Term 2. The 6 weeks leading up to Easter (the period of Lent) are a time in the church calendar for reflecting on our brokenness. A time of realising the limitations that come with being human. This period of Lent is a sombre time in church life, but points towards the incredibly joyful time of Easter, where the celebration is felt all the more for the challenging time faced beforehand. A good model for life: acknowledge your faults, make amends and leave it in the past so you can truly celebrate the good things in life!

This time of lent has made me reflect on my parenting. As a mum, I often find myself burdened by guilt when it comes to my family. I fail on a daily basis to be the mum I want to be. Sure, that mum is unrealistically created from the media, from advertising, from all the ton of articles I’ve read, and the talk of those perfect parents who have perfect shining angels of children. But even though I am aware of the unrealistic expectations I’m placing on myself, it doesn’t stop me judging myself. Parental guilt can rob us of the enjoyment of our children. What parents need to do is dump the ideal parent in our heads and adopt a ‘good enough’ attitude to our parenting. We

This ‘good enough’ parenting is a foundation of the ‘Space for you and your baby’ programme. Space is a beautiful programme for first time parents where they can socialise, learn, contribute, eat, laugh and cry with other parents as well as develop their bond with their babies. Having a baby is hard work!! But it can be so much more rewarding doing it with others in the community who are in the same situation and can support you. Space has 5 main components: • Discussion on parenting or baby development • FOOD! And time for sharing and support • Heuristic play (encouraging babies to safely explore) • Story time With a relaxed and non-judgmental atmosphere, parents can tend to baby’s needs as they arise as babies will need feeding, a nap and do some crying over the 2 hour session. You may worry that your beautiful new screaming banshee will be too noisy and distracting, but that’s just simply not the case – all are welcome and embraced in the programme.
Enrolments for term 2 are open now. We want to support parents in Ellerslie to thrive, to enjoy their families and to be kind to themselves. Once launched, members will be able to view all our toys and see whether they are currently available in the library or out on loan. The committee is considering whether we will also set up the ability for members to reserve toys. We are also planning to introduce a barcode scanner into the library this year to make the checking out process so much quicker. So, if you are looking for a cost effective way to provide your children or grandchildren with some interesting new toys every couple of weeks, then pop in and check out the library during our opening hours. We continuously review toys to ensure they are in good condition and replace them when required. Last year we bought over 50 new toys for the library so there are always plenty of new ones hitting the shelves. Ellerslie Toy Library is located at St Peters Presbyterian Church, 7 Harrison Rd, Ellerslie and is open Wednesdays 7-8pm or Saturdays 9-11am. We have two membership options – Duty Membership (including 4 library duties a year) at $110 or Full Membership at $190. The library caters for families of children aged 0-5 years. We have over 600 quality toys, puzzles, games and learning activities for members to borrow to support your child’s development. These include large ride-ons and outdoor play equipment, balance bikes and scooters, dress ups, Duplo, train sets, role play toys, construction sets, cars and trucks and musical instruments.

teaching piano and accompanying on stage. She has a deep love of
homes. The lost stories and sounds of children rehearsing music and small
music, saying it has helped her through some of the harder times of her
family concerts emanating from the streets is driving Mary to bring it all

In December 2017, she organized a community concert at the Anglican Christ Church, Ellerslie. The gold-coin donation event was filled to capacity and showcased local musicians of all genres, abilities and instruments. Some of the performers were Jackson’s own students, while others were local residents and even Kiwi rock legend of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, Tom Sharplin, surprised the audience on stage. Mary hopes to hold these types of concerts every six months, with the next scheduled on July 2nd. The decision to hold the concerts at the iconic Ellerslie church is deliberate. Not only because of the strong connection with vicar Rebecca Heale, but also because the 13 stained glass windows inside were created by the same craftsman who made the windows for the new Coventry Cathedral in England after it was bombed in World War II.

Mary’s own introduction to music began in England where her mother trained as a singer. Mary grew up with music, learning to sing and play a variety of instruments herself, but it has been the piano and a background in teaching that led her to take on teaching piano full time. With a loan and stern warning from a cousin in Sydney, Mary purchased a red bicycle and advertised herself as a piano teacher when she was “young and living in Melbourne”. Within a short few months she was biking to 35 pupils every week. Upon returning to Auckland she was told continuing her dream of teaching piano would not be sustainable. She proved everyone wrong and soon had a full schedule of 36 pupils and an upgrade to a car. Today, Mary teaches from her Mt Wellington home. Her schedule remains full and she also offers half-price lessons to pupils from low-income families. On top of this, Mary wants to expand her fortnightly jam sessions with experienced musicians (over Grade 4) with the intention of performing at local RSAs. HOW RESILIENT ARE CHILDREN TODAY? As an adult, can you remember what it was like for you in kindergarten? Some people have extremely vivid memories and others, like me, only have a few glimpses; like remembering I followed my kindergarten teacher everywhere she went and that she was very tall. However, I don’t have any bad memories, therefore expect it was just what I needed at the time. My parents sent me to the school down the road but as we moved considerably due to my father’s job, as a child growing up in Australia, I went to 9 different schools in 4 different states; each state having a totally different education system, with different curriculum and assessment policies. When I tell this to some people, they exclaim in horror how hard that must have been, but it really didn’t bother me (except maybe the last move in Year 12 to Year 13 when I had to leave my best friend behind – but she is still my best friend 44 years later!). What this experience gave me was resilience. I think this skill is often lacking in young people today as they grow up in a world that provides instant gratification on many levels, where parents are often afraid to say no, or too busy to give loving, consistent yet firm boundaries. Young people crave guidance and boundaries in a world that has none, where everything is accessible, where there are no borders and information is on every device, large and small. As an adult I also feel on information overload, with over 150 emails every day to contend with, demands placed on us from every direction, yet we as the adult have to be the calm in the storm for our children; as parents and teachers. This starts in the home and for parents to create strong relationships with their child’s school and teachers, so that there is an invisible wrapping around each child/young person. The International Association of Steiner/Waldorf Early Childhood Education states: “the future development of each individual child and of humanity as a whole depends on health-giving experiences in the first seven years of life. Early childhood must be a place where physical, social, emotional, intellectual and spiritual growth are nurtured in a developmentally appropriate way with an understanding that the young child learns about their world through action, through doing, by imitating those around them. Therefore, those around them must be worthy of this imitation. They must provide a wholesome atmosphere of goodness, security and love, where trust and warmth for fellow human beings is engendered and the world is seen as a good place. Those young children who are exposed too early to long hours on TV, computers and a range of technological devices that do everything for them, learn about their world through a screen rather than human interaction and experiencing their environment first hand. How many times have you been to a restaurant where a child is placed at the table with a mobile phone or tablet in front of them? Sure, they might be quiet and allow the adults to have a relaxing time, but have they learnt how to sit and listen, how to be patient, how to engage with others in a respectful way or have they learnt to switch off to those around them? I remember a year ago I was sitting on a Sydney train and a young mother was madly texting on her phone with her inquisitive three-year old next to her who was excitedly jumping up and down. He started exclaiming for his mother to look at the boats in the water as we were going over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. There was also a stunning sunset which lit the buildings of glass like magic and this young child was in awe of all that he could see. Yet his mother was oblivious and absently asked him to be quiet and stop jumping on the seat. Not once did she look up at her son or the view. I thought, is this what our world is coming to? As principal of Michael Park School, I believe our school community is very awake to this incessant barrage of technology into our lives and though 26
it is extremely hard for parents to be constantly engaged in battle with their children of all ages, from the two-year-old or the seventeen-year-old begging for more screen time, at least they try. They talk to each other as a class community and try to gain strength from each other. They talk about their issues, share strategies and try not to get caught up in the cries from their child that they or unfair or that their friend is allowed to watch a certain movie, play a certain computer game etc… They keep informed. Parents today are attacked from all fronts, as in addition they have to cope with advertising material, promoters who strategically know exactly where to place products in supermarkets and ads on TV. In such a materialistic, consumer driven world it is no wonder that parents often feel like it is all too hard and they give in. I can remember as a child my mother saying no and I knew she meant it. I learnt fairly fast that I was not allowed to ask a second time. So, are we really being attacked or have we weakened? This is a question only each parent can answer for themselves. Children crave love, but they also crave a world which is fairly predictable. By having boundaries, we give our children a sense of security. When we give children too many choices are we saying to them we don’t know what is good for them and therefore they must decide? I heard from a child psychologist a few years ago that the more choice we give a young child, the least likely they are to be able to make decision when they are an adult. Reflect upon how many questions you ask your child before they go to school. So what do we do? It is actually quite simple really. Firstly, children need to know they are loved and accepted, that others are interested in what they do. We must really actively listen to what they say and take a genuine interest in their activities and not answer them in an absent fashion because we are busy doing something else. Parents need to trust their own instincts and remember that consistency is key and make family routines that work for their family. We must provide children with real activities, not virtual, give them time to play, relax or spend time in nature and have family opportunities for conversation. Set healthy family rhythms and routines, manageable boundaries and expectations. Children should also be given responsibility for practical tasks around the house and contribute to family life. Healthy child development relies upon healthy social relationships at home, school and the wider community so that as adults they can contribute to the world in positive ways, so they are resilient to face new challenges and believe in themselves. ELLERSLIE PLAY CENTRE What a time of celebration we’ve had at Ellerslie Playcentre. Our Santa’s Little Helper’s took to the streets of Ellerslie to join the fantastic Santa Parade. What a wonderful sense of belonging and community spirit we all felt. We also celebrated a wonderful year at Playcentre with our Christmas party which included a visit from the big man himself! We enjoyed sharing our special day with our families. In addition, we also held our separate grown up Christmas celebrations with current and past members too. There has been extra cause to celebrate this
year following our brilliant ERO Report which described our centre as a ‘vibrant learning environment led by experienced kaiako who willingly share their knowledge and encourage others’ and importantly that our ‘children are confident and engaged learners’. A huge thank you to all our volunteers who work so hard to make our Playcentre such a welcoming, creative environment for our Tamariki. Our celebrations also saw us farewell several of our big kids who have graduated and continued their learning journey at school. We mark this special milestone with them on session with our graduation cape, fancy dress, gifts and singing. In addition, they also choose a trip of their choice which has
included, gymnastics classes, treasure hunts at the Botanic Gardens and Turtle rescue at Kelly Tarltons. Whilst we will miss our graduates, we are really looking forward to seeing our new big kids become leaders and role models for our younger children. We have also been happy to welcome several new Pepe to our Whanau. It’s wonderful to watch our children interact with the babies as well getting the chance to have some extra baby cuddles ourselves. A return to the 2018 school year was a reminder how fortunate we are as a school community to have such amazing facilities and our state of the art new 24 classroom block. We were inundated with visitors last year (local/national and international) who were interested in seeing the collaborative learning spaces in operation but also how we were successfully navigating the change management process. Education like all aspects of life is constantly changing and evolving and we are reminded the the only thing that that is constant is change itself. In the last five years we have seen waves of change in how we understand the learning process for our students (learners styles) and students/parents and teachers have become more self aware of the learning process, student engagement and also choice in the teaching and learning programme (learner agency). We are asking a lot of questions of ourselves as educators and are focussed on combining the best of the old with the best of the new (using research) for our learners. The new year saw a school record for the number of children enrolled at Ellerslie - 700 students and we are projected to grow to over 800 by the end of the year. Such exciting times and how lucky are our students and staff to have access to first class educational facilities! Over the summer and throughout Term 1 work was
commenced and in some cases completed on a number of new developments on the school site - Sandpit (look at the size of it), Long Jump Pit, new gardens, shade house installation, drainage installation, court markings to further enhance the opportunities we can offer our students. A big thank you to the school Fundraising Group and wider school community who work tirelessly to support the schools Board of Trustees with additional revenue for resourcing. As 2017 closed we were excited to celebrate the positive academic achievement of our students against the National Standards - 88% of our students are at or above standard in Mathematics, 84% at or above the standards in writing, 84% at or above standard in reading. These results are a culmination of hard work by the students and teachers and a focussed professional development learning programme. We also had a number of other achievements over the year. As we look ahead to term one and beyond we would like to invite the wider Ellerslie community to our Book Fair on 25 March 2018. Thank you to all the people who have made contributions of books, DVD’s, towards this event. There is still time to to drop any books to the school office and we’d love to see you there on the 25th! We are looking forward to another busy and successful year at Ellerslie.

Falls Prevention Tai Chi began 15 years ago with the ACC Falls Prevention Program. After that program finished Alison Thomas continued running classes with her focus on developing strength and balance for the Ellerslie residents in and around our community. Welcome to another exciting year at One Tree Hill College. The year has already started very well with another big intake of Year 9 students, most of which are from our local community. The roll is now at capacity and our enrolment scheme is assisting us to prioritise families wishing to enrol children from our community.
These wonderful results reflect the emphasis that we have placed on our college values and ‘Attitudes to Learning’ which are fundamental to student success. Students are focused on academic achievement, and 2018 will see One Tree Hill College reach even greater heights following our outstanding successes last year.
I am very proud to be able to inform our community that our 2017 NCEA results were outstanding, with over 85% of students achieving their NCEA. This, along with a very high percentage of students achieving merit and excellence endorsements in NCEA, continue to highlight the excellent teaching and learning taking place at One Tree Hill College.
Following the excellent Education Review Office (ERO) report endorsing the college and placing us on the 4-5 year cycle for outstanding schools, this continues to be a great time to be involved with One Tree Hill College. We certainly have students with exceptional talent and it is wonderful to see them show such pride in the college. I look forward to the many successes which will occur throughout the year.
I would like to congratulate the many students who achieved so highly. To succeed at these levels are outstanding achievements and we are all very proud of these students. We have honoured these students at our annual Scholars Assembly with ‘Academic Excellence’ awards and challenge all other students to emulate their success this year.

ELLERSLIE RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION Happy New Year from the Ellerslie Residents Association (ERA)! We are a group of Ellerslie residents who are interested in building a better, more livable suburb. Membership of the ERA is simply through payment of an annual subscription of $10. This revenue is principally used for administration purposes – printing, costs of the public meetings and maintenance of the membership database and accounting system. You can join online at www.ellerslieresidents.co.nz The ERA Committee spearheads the Association and is elected by the residents to represent their interests with respect to local and wider issues of concern, working with Council, local boards and other authorities to achieve change and act as a conduit for facilitation and connectivity. Committee members’ roles are voluntary and unpaid. The Committee welcomes engagement with any particular issue by members of the Association and may co-opt them onto the Committee for that purpose.
