EDITORIAL

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU... As we move to our 101st issue dedicated to our little and not so little ones, we go down memory lane and pause…to think back about all the “prep” that one needed to get over with before the 10th month began. For one of us it was 20 odd years back and the other almost a decade ago. A lot has changed in the way we look at dwellings of our young ones. While one of us dreamt of vintage style bassinet, the other got joy from covering the entire wall of her little boy’s room with drawings of R2-D2. Since we were such pros at motherhood, we thought that working on an issue that had a theme “living with children” would be easy-peasy but we had lot to discover. The current trend in kids rooms has evolved, bringing in newer ways of thinking that imbibes with this ever changing and ambiguous world we are moving towards. The designers of today have broken the cliches of cutesy pinks and blues and moved on to using wallpapers, colours and flooring in a more sophisticated manner in the rooms of young adults. Today, life between home and work moves fast hence there is less time to fuss over things. So, “Mature Nursery” shaped up as a big trend for our focus. No wonder the Asian Paints Colour next trends for the year 2018 (pg 66) encompasses a similar thought that relates to this generation. As the monsoon rains begin to diminish and all around we see the rain-washed nature, Klein blue, seems to be the next big colour trend that takes us to yet another journey of discovering the blues. Check out our trend story on “New Mid-Century Modern”, a trend that is slowly seeping in every nook and corner with just a few iconic pieces to begin with and then taking over the entire room. For an inside scoop on what’s hapenning in the professional lives of your favourite design divas, skim through our features on the works of India Design ID 2018 speaker Takaharu Tezuka, Italian design genius Fabio Novembre, French creative Matali Crasset, among others. Our selection of homes, belonging to happy individuals and spirited families are quite literally travelogues, peppered with family herilooms and travel souvenirs that evoke nostalgic memories and stories of the past. These nests showcase the passion of their homeowners and the love with which they put togther these cocoons. Also, it’s that exciting time of the year again. The EDIDA is back! Get your creative juices flowing and let your original ideas keep pouring in!

THE INSIDE STORY An explosion of fiery colours, graphic shapes and vivid lights is what greets us as we enter the Aranya Kid’s restaurant in China imagined by Shanghai firm Wutopia lab. Take inspiration from its theatrical interiors to fashion a playroom that encourages creativity and exploration. Read the full story “Enchanting Reality” on Pg 218

Cast In Stone

Revisit the past – textured surfaces and repurposed materials echo the timeless charm of the Brutalist era PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEROME GALLAND STYLING BY CHRISTELE AGEORGES

Monochrome Medley: Offset a deep grey backdrop with accents in solid black and white. The contemporary marble and varnished polyethylene Button coffee tables, crafted by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, create a strong contrast with the industrial walls of the Gallo-Roman Museum of Lyon, envisioned by Bernard Zehrfuss. An assortment of utilitarian objects like Jeremie Duprey’s concrete Chateaux d’eau vases and the Wabi Black Clay goblet and vase from Pascale Risbourg lend modernity

40

Rough It Up: Surfaces and accents bearing weathered finishes exude a timeless charm. Plastered wall shelves, when paired with textured furniture like the black granite Cairn stool, imagined by Guillaume Delvigne and an aluminium and bronze bowl from Hongjie Yang, help fashion a sophisticated and versatile space. The limestone and resin Stoned candlestick, goblet and vase, from a series of five pieces created by Fredrik Paulsen accentuate the monotone setup

41

TRENDS NEXT

Material Matters: Layering textures in similar tones creates dimension in neutral spaces. Experiment with statement pieces boasting distressed finishes like the solid oak bench from Marc Neuhoff and Piero Lissoni’s black marble 1949 side table for Cassina. The theme is further illustrated with the sculptural Luciferase lamp envisioned by Nacho Carbonell that uses steel, paverpol and coloured pigments as well as Michal Fargo’s resin Else Rock vases and bowl

Rock Solid: Break the monotony of textured greys with materials featuring subtle natural patterns. Take cues from this artistic setup and introduce elements like Christophe Delcourt’s raw, glazed black lava Val table and the Grand Antique marble Extraction side table by Pierre Gonalons. Reintroduce vestiges of the Neolithic era with Jeroen Wand’s Phases jars made from a moulded plaster based mixture

44

TRENDS NEXT Black Magic: Organic forms and coarse textures effortlessly add character to bare surroundings. Let burnt wood furniture like the five piece Basalt coffee table from the Illusions collection by Normal Studio for Ymer & Malta take centre stage in a light setting. KleinReid’s Mihara candlestick crafted using lava-like ceramic, and the black paper Pulp bowl and pitcher from Studio Joe Meesters exhibit the subdued glamour of excavated treasures

In Fine Form: Combine sculptural silhouettes and simple geometric forms to create a minimal yet contemporary arrangement. Take inspiration from a setup comprising terrazzo and oak wood Circles side tables from Atelier Areti, combined with a set of seven Omaggio a Morandi bottle-like figurines, each created from a different type of marble by Elisa Ossino for Salvatori. The red earthenware Craterlet vase from Atelier Polyhedre introduces a punch of colour in the sepia toned composition For details, see Address Book

IN CONVERSATION WITH

TAKAHARU TEZUKA Japanese architect and India Design ID 2018

speaker’s projects constantly provide a new perspective on how to design for the masses TEXT BY NIDHI UPADHYAYA PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY TEZUKA ARCHITECTS

80

“I HAD A WESTERN EDUCATION AND MY TIME WITH RICHARD ROGERS TAUGHT ME HOW TO ANALYSE THINGS RATIONALLY...”

“I

t is my destiny to be an architect and if I were to be reincarnated, I’d want to be the same again,” Takaharu divulges at the very beginning of our conversation. While studying in the Musashi Institute of Technology in Tokyo, he discovered that design came instinctively to him and with encouragement from his professors, he decided to migrate to the US to explore the field further. The University of Pennsylvania alumnus later worked under British architect Richard Rogers where he incidentally picked up his signature colour, blue. He reveals that nothing in his life was ever planned and he went along the path as it unfolded, adding, “You can’t change your life, you just find a way to live with it.” The project that gave impetus to their firm Tezuka Architects, which he runs with his wife Yui, was the Fuji Kindergarten in Tokyo. Rather than looking at magazines, books or studies, he finds that his inspiration stems from his kids. Observing them running around their table in circles is how the idea for the school came about. When asked to design the facility, he decided to create a circular form that encourages students to move around instead of enclosing them in box-like spaces. Takaharu’s penchant for translating daily habits into spaces is what makes him unique. This attitude is also exemplified in one of their older projects, the Roof House. He fondly recalls the conceptualisation of this family residence for a couple who loved spending time on the roof. Given their love for sitting out in the open, he thought it would be interesting to make a structure that

incorporates a dining setup, kitchen, several skylights and even a shower on the rooftop. He adds, “This project changed the way we thought about architecture completely.” While such projects seem radical in nature, their core concept emerges from a simple habit that the virtuoso inherently follows. He believes that sensitivity to our surroundings is a key skill every architect must have. If you can’t understand people, you can’t design for them. While it is impossible to analyse everything around, simply observing how they function can make a big difference. He elaborates, “You never know the reason why the birds are coming back to the same place, but you can observe that they are doing so all the time. That is the difference and sometimes you don’t need to know the reason, you just need to have the knowledge.” Continuing his account of how integral the neighbouring environment is to design, he stresses that human beings are part of nature, not standing against it. Takaharu advocates that it is necessary for us to acknowledge that we are a part of the constantly changing mould that surrounds us. This outlook changes the way one can approach sustainable design. He asserts, “I think if you want to be environmentally friendly, just turn off the light and work in the day and when it’s dark you go to sleep. If it is cold, you wear more layers. I think that is a more sustainable way to live instead of using green architecture.” In response to the growing inclusion of technology in design, he disputes that the nature of architecture doesn’t change. We live the same kind of life, sit on the same kind of chairs.

While it is a tool that helps one design more efficiently, it is not a substitute for making models by hand. Good design, one that lasts, is created by a clear understanding of space, which cannot be understood on a computer. Interestingly, coming from an educational background with contradicting Japanese and American ideologies makes him different from local residents. He explains, “I had a western education and my time with Richard Rogers taught me how to analyse things rationally unlike our native culture which focuses more on emotions and feelings.” He further goes on to state that while everyone’s views are distinct, there is no difference between the people in the world. He approaches his projects the same way, designing for a more diverse mass instead of restricting himself to the local culture.

w

INDIAN CONNECT Having visited the country on numerous occasions, he expresses, “India is alive. In Japan, there is a kind of pure existence as we don’t have such diverse crowds. The country creates a powerful impact as so many things are happening at the same time. Even though it is overwhelming, it helps me feel human again.”

FUJI KINDERGARTEN What started as a simple sketch of a circle on a page has now become one of the most popular schools in the world. Located in the Tachikawa suburb of Tokyo, the open design features a ring-like roof that creates an endless surface for the students to run around and chase each other.

ASAHI KINDERGARTEN

The original edifice in Minamisanriku, Japan was destroyed in the Tohoku earthquake in 2011. The studio rebuilt the entire facility using timber from trees that were killed by the salt water of the tsunami in the same year.

RING AROUND A TREE An addition to the Fuji Kindergarten, this construction comprises a wood and glass volume wrapping around a Zelkova tree that was used by children years before the school came into being. The firm introduced various pockets in the assembly that promote exploration and freedom of movement. MUKU NURSERY SCHOOL

One of their most recent projects, this establishment in Tokyo is a composition of numerous umbrellalike modules. It follows the same principle as the other structures, encouraging free movement around the individual units, instead of restricting the pupils to one singular mass.

The French designer strikes a perfect balance between work and family time 7 AM We get up together as a family. It’s nice to have someone to say hello to first thing in the morning. We have a delicious breakfast together and complete our routine morning chores. I leave for work once my kids, Popline and Arto, get ready for school 8.30 AM We live in an old factory in Paris, part of which we have converted into a studio. Hence, I am often the first one to arrive at work. I use this time to think, analyse and ideate. I find it easier to get started and focus better in the morning, especially with classical music playing in the background 9.30 AM This is when my colleagues arrive. We are a team of four including my husband Francis and me. While I look over the artistic side of the projects, he looks over the administrative and financial aspects. Once the group is here, our regular discussions and presentations take place 1 PM We always have lunch at home. Francis is a great cook and can effortlessly whip up some healthy meals for us. Eating consciously is very important to me. 2 PM The rest of my afternoon is spent attending the remaining meetings 4.30 PM Our children come back from school at this hour. We all take a small break and feast on snacks, small cakes, and a ginger drink 7 PM I go for a walk around the neighbourhood to clear my head and organise myself, a habit I have followed since I was much younger. Whenever stuck, walking helps me gather my thoughts 9 PM We love having our friends and neighbours over for dinner. Occasionally, I host parties for a diverse mix of people from different creative faculties so that they can get together and explore areas of collaboration

ocated in Hauz Khas Enclave, New Delhi, the collaborative studio of Anagram Architects led by Madhav Raman and Vaibhav Dimri spreads over 1,000 sq ft. Bearing hints of green, the office is tucked away in the basement of a structure designed by the duo. Madhav reveals, “Our client is our landlord. This space wasn’t of any use to them. The size and the location worked perfectly for us, so we stepped in.” The creatives give us a tour of their atelier that displays their versatile work ethic and love for nature.

THE APPROACH The main entrance features a flight of cascading steps, which brings in ample natural light and promotes ventilation. “The entrance that makes people aware of the transition between the indoors and outdoors, was not part of the original design. It borrows from an installation inspired by thresholds, created by us for Khoj, an art residency,” explains Vaibhav. Interestingly, this area also doubles up as a communal space after the reception, stairs, pantry, conference room and washroom are shut off. “In the evening, we close down the main studio and use the rest of the space as an amphitheatre to have film screenings or host parties and performances,” he adds. PROMOTING TRANSPARENCY The open plan layout of the workspace promotes fluid teamwork, which is essential to the work ethic of the practice. Madhav adds, “This kind of a plan, with no barriers makes the environment less formal and fun.” The right lighting was one crucial aspect to avoid having a dull and dingy space. So, natural light seeps in through the shafts, slits in the stairs and the skylight and unusual light fixtures illuminating the place. Delilah Rodrigues

DESIGNER SPEAK: MAARTEN BAAS OF MAARTEN BASS

INSPIRATION Fossils of small monster-like figures MATERIAL Glass

MARCEL NAHLOVSKY GLOBAL MARKETING DIRECTOR, LASVIT “Maxim Velcovsky, Art Director of Lasvit and Maarten have a long-term friendship. The designer was one of our first choices when we came up with the idea of monstrous glass objects. He exposed himself to the dark side and imagined these simple, yet scary little monsters with sharp teeth.”

THE BEGINNING Monsters is based on fossils of small creatures found in The Netherlands. I had heard of these recent digs where they discovered their archaeological relics between various layers of clay and sand. They had sharp teeth and killed their prey by crunching it but without eating it – they had no stomach. I decided that the final product had to be as naive as it could, absolutely childish. THE PROCESS I’ve collaborated with Lasvit for years. As always, I enjoyed the process right from conceptualisation, till the end product. After the ideation, I began with a doodle as all my work starts with a sketch. The vision for this creation was clear with every detail fine-tuned to precision. Different artists have varied points of view of what a monster means, so we can see a broad

range of inspiration beginning with devils, ghosts and spooky things, over animals, supernatural creatures, weird objects, to personal fears, phobias, unacceptable behaviours, even some humans. Basically, we wanted to capture all those insights and present them under one concept. THE PAYOFF These glass figures are not larger than 20 cm. You can hold them in the palm of your hand. They look cute, but they are a wolf in sheep’s clothing. They are flat, almost two-dimensional, but they can crawl about at night – you never know when it will happen. They hunt, kill, crunch and set fear into the heart of their unsuspecting prey. We gave them names that are not the usual. They are called BHSD-001, BHSD-002, BHSD-003 and BHSD-004, like the names for some fresh scientific discovery.

MONSTERS IS BASED ON FOSSILS OF SMALL CREATURES FOUND IN THE NETHERLANDS MAARTEN BAAS The Dutch inventor is known for his creations that are rebellious, playful, intellectual, theatrical and artistic. His oeuvre comprises conceptual designs, limited editions, production design, installations, public space, architecture, interior design, theatre design and performances. n a verdant half-acre plot by the river, on the soughtafter Boat Club Road in Pune, studio HINGE was commissioned by Merint Developers to realise their vision of uber luxe apartments, master planned by international firm Atkins. Initially appointed as interior designers via an invited international competition, our scope was eventually expanded to architecture, facade and landscape, which essentially was determining aesthetic across the property. The 8, 000 sq ft apartments are replete with private pools, double heights and generous outdoor spaces. Placing fundamentals of space, light, proportion and utility over frills, we used design to re-interpret luxury. Service access is segregated throughout via distinct road entrances, vertical movement and entrance lobbies at every level (single apartment per floor) and carefully planned circulation routes all the way up to the clubhouse area at the terrace level. 12 ft deep recessed decks with ‘disappearing windows’ become one with double height living rooms, cleverly screened from the dining space by a bespoke claw-shaped wood and brass chandelier that sweeps up from the floor and across the ceiling. A private deck, bedroom, wardrobe and bathroom open up into each other through sliding doors and switchable ‘magic’ glass to comprise the 900 sq ft master suite (two per flat) surrounded by dense foliage. esigned for the Swaminarayan sect in Gandhinagar, BAPS Girls Residential School can accommodate around 1000 students along with all the ancillary amenities. The philosophy of being able to work with passive, integrated strategies rather than echanical interventions has been followed across the entire campus. The program has been divided into three distinct areas – academic, sports and culture, and housing. The campus was conceived as a low-rise network of buildings connected by a central spine along which the three zones are located. Responses to climate and sustainable strategies have played a significant role in developing an architectural language. All the structures are oriented along the North-South axis for climatic reasons while the street runs from East to West. The central path is a non programmed space which is used for activities ranging from assemblies to yoga classes to informal teaching sessions. Public facilities like the library, auditorium, dining hall and prayer hall directly open out onto this path. There are bridges at certain locations that span across the street for better connectivity between the various functions. A low height, connecting verandah runs along the entire length of the axis ensuring an all-weather connection between the blocks while also working as a transition space between the building and the landscape. owering coconut trees, lush hills and pristine ocean waters envelop Anantara Layan Phuket, a tropical sanctuary tucked away on the North-West coast of Phuket. Seamlessly blending with its surroundings, the resort sprawls across a steep landscape housing villas that sit on hilltops amidst lush tropical foliage, cooled by the bracing breeze of the Andaman Sea. Choose from 30 suites and 47 one/two bedroom Pool Villas that boast contemporary interiors dotted with local cultural accents, a private garden with direct access to the beach, and a pebbled outdoor deck complete with a personal plunge pool. Further up the resort’s hilly slope, overlooking the azure expanse of the beach, are The Residences by Anantara – a collection of 15 exclusive two storeyed pool bungalows. These larger than life holiday retreats are cocooned in privacy with a 21 mtr infinity pool that offers a ringside view of the crystalline sea, a Thai sala where you can lounge for hours at a stretch and a rooftop deck to take in picturesque sunsets. Bringing the breezy outdoors in, the interiors of the residences are open and airy, enhanced with high ceilings, sleek lines and minimal decor to not take away any attention from the surrounding neon blue iridescence. “The design concept was to a create a modern interpretation of a classical Asian space inspired by the cultural and ecological context of the natural terrain. Local and eco-friendly materials ranging from Thai travertine, which was used for landscaping, to natural stones that have been laid on the floor of the pool, and a host of art and artefacts that were sourced locally to adorn the villas – the idea was to keep the design and spirit of the place as authentic as possible,” says Micah Tamthai, Vice President, Real Estate, Minor International. While its scenic location makes for a dreamy setting, Anantara Layan Phuket absorbs you in an immersive experience that comes with all the trappings of a luxurious getaway while offering a true taste of the region’s local flavours. I

n a time of growing restlessness, a sanctum for “personal and collective experiences of commemoration” is the need of the hour. Addressing this, local studios Kimmel Eshkolot Architects and Kalush Chechick Architects collectively envisioned the National Memorial on Mount Herzl, an undulating mound in Jerusalem that opens out to the sky above. Etan Kimmel, co-founder of Kimmel Eshkolot Architects, reveals, “We wanted to have the structure carved into the mountain, creating a place of silence and contemplation. Daylight pouring into the space became a central architectural feature.” The underground hall has a funnel-like shape, fashioned using bricks with stone slabs at the upper end that ensure the flow of air within the construction. A long wall, made of 23,000 stone bricks engraved with the names of all the soldiers and the date of their passing, follows a spiral ramp up the monument, wrapping around the tubular form. Owing to the light entering through the oculus and pleasant thermal conditions achieved by the sunken form and exterior Jerusalem stone cladding, the edifice uses minimal electricity throughout the day. Its unimposing profile effortlessly integrates the shrine with the adjacent mountains and cemetery. Nidhi Upadhyaya Website www.kimmel.co.il

ines and forms piqued the interest of master creator Hormazd Narielwalla since his early days in Pune. He soon moved to the UK to pursue a degree in fashion design with a specialisation in menswear and always dreamt of becoming a designer. One of his visits to the high profile British tailoring district of Savile Row for research during his Masters at the University of Westminster left him spellbound and inspired. Hormadz reveals, “At one of the oldest tailoring houses here, I discovered that they would ceremoniously shred bespoke brown paper sewing patterns of deceased customers since there is no value in the parchment without the body.” This left a profound effect on him, prompting him to produce exquisite art with these discarded patterns. Through his fine designs, styling sensibilities and novel interpretations, he produces art that is often playful and humorous, in a historical and contemporary context. His renditions are free from function and way ahead of time with an inherent aesthetic quality. He enjoys making joyful, comical figurative portraits of artists like Frida Kahlo, fashion icons like Diane Pernet and Anna Piaggi, pop icons like Klaus Nomi as well as fictional characters. “I also make self portraits ranging from a literal rendition to me dressing up as a character as seen in my Maharaja series or my Paper Dolls series as a contemporary Geisha,” he adds. Delilah Rodrigues Website www.narielwalla.com

Clockwise, from Above Hormazd uses papers sourced from around the globe, including stores like Raima in Barcelona and Little Greene in London for these masterpieces; Lost Gardens is a specially commissioned body of artworks that trigger reflections ranging from personal experiences of loss to current political destruction of community and culture; Some of his vibrant and distinct artworks will soon be a part of the permanent collection at The Victoria and Albert Museum

Italian homeware and kitchen utensil brand Alessi and Dutch designer Marcel Wanders joined forces to unveil their new home fragrance collection – The Five Seasons. The design of the aromatic offerings showcase the creative’s artistic and poetic style and the scents, created with advice from perfume makers Grasse, celebrate nature and life. Each aroma evokes the four traditional seasons, with the fifth being a harmonious blend of all. Brrr echoes winter with notes of bergamot, lily of the valley and musk; Ahhh, a mix of cardamom, hyacinth and vetiver is reminiscent of a mystical garden in spring; Hmm, a blend of figs, red fruits and mixed woods screams summer; and Grrr is a dense and smokey combination of incense, cedar wood and moss. You also have Shhh that suggests mystery and spirituality with hints of eucalyptus, rose and patchouli. e’ve always believed that a space should have soul – this is our design philosophy and so, when we finally had a chance to create our home together, it happened almost instinctively. While we didn’t go about decorating our abode with a specific theme or plan, all we knew was that it had to embody a lived-in, warm and eclectic feel. What attracted us to this 5,500 sq ft house when we moved in 10 years ago was not its great design potential, but the lush greenery and ample natural light. While Amith’s parents inhabit the ground floor, we live on the first floor with two beagles and our newest housemate, our twomonth-old daughter. Three rooms, a central lounge area, a cosy dining setup and a kitchen that overlooks the balcony, complete the house. A central lounge area, where we usually unwind, ties all the rooms together. An exposed, distressed white brick wall in this room forms a perfect backdrop to showcase

assorted artwork. We love collecting prints when we travel and they are almost like souvenirs from our sojourns. Our favourite room is the grey music den that features a gallery wall with all types of framed art. Most of the furniture has been produced in-house and these have been placed alongside iconic pieces like the Eames lounge chair and Cassina tables. Additionally, various knick-knacks collected over the years create a diverse aesthetic that is a dominant theme running throughout the whole space. To ensure a feeling of cohesiveness within the residence, the wooden oak herringbone flooring continues from one room to the other. We wanted our abode to make us feel like we are on a permanent vacation or rather, a staycation. This led us to fashion a bedroom that has been inspired by the breezy vibe of Bali and includes a four-poster bed and sheer drapes. The baby nursery with a tropical theme is the latest addition.

HOME PARIS

I

t was back in 2000 that the couple, Bruno and Clemence, acquired the approximately 1,900 sq ft apartment, housed in a typical Haussmann style building in Paris’s tony 16th arrondissement. Clemence, who works in the cosmetics industry, immediately fell in love with the large bow window in the dining room and the fact that the back of the house looks out onto a schoolyard with trees. THE INCEPTION Initially, the owners decided on redecorating the space themselves. That changed once they discovered the work of Parisian interior designer Marianne Evennou. “There’s a kind of poetry in the way she uses colours,” enthuses Bruno. “It was also a means of having a third person to prevent us from arguing over choices,” adds Clemence.

180

Acting as an arbiter was particularly important in this case because the couple has different tastes. “It was obvious right from the beginning that they had contrary but complementary personalities, each with strong traits,” states Marianne. “Bruno has a freer, more baroque aesthetic, whereas Clemence is much more classical.” THE REVAMP Before Marianne’s intervention, the apartment was pale grey and white. “We wanted to get away from the grey we had, which was the colour you see in all those shabby chic Belgian homes,” Bruno recounts. “Marianne proposed tones that she’s so incredible at creating. They’re always quite muted and in no way flashy.” While Clemence requested for lighter hues, Bruno was keen on something more theatrical.

In the kitchen, a pale turquoise shelving unit with a blue stone counter top elegantly houses appliances like an oven from Rosieres and a NEFF microwave. Breaking the monotony is an artwork that Clemence brought from her trip to China Left In the same room, the dining table is topped with a Caravane tablecloth and paired with vintage wicker chairs that were sourced from a Parisian flea market. A minimal wall light from Wo & We illuminates the setting

HOME PARIS

In the end, each got their way. The lady of the house spends a lot of time in the dining room, which was painted off-white. For the sitting area which is more Bruno’s domain, Marianne opted for shades inspired by a stormy sky – moody grey and dark blue. “It’s exactly what I dreamt of, but would never have dared to do myself,” he admits. EXTRA FRILLS In the kitchen, she replaced the cupboard doors and handles to give it a more rustic feel. She also retained most of the furniture, including all the sofas, which she simply reupholstered in different tones of velvet. She did, however, install some industrial style lights, while the owners sourced a Lindsey Adelman chandelier for the sitting room themselves. “In their minds, it was as if they were buying a work of art,” Marianne recalls. Ethnic 184

touches were added in the form of African sculptures and a Tuareg carpet from Mauritania. A zebra skin clad Louis XVI armchair on which Bruno’s mother got married also stays firmly in place. KIDDIE CORNER The most fun space, however, is the bedroom that belongs to the couple’s young twins, Oscar and Philomene. The designer managed to open up the room by linking it to an adjacent storage room, giving each child their own study area. She also created bunk beds, which, to her, are reminiscent of a tree house. “I think it was Bruno and Clemence’s fantasy,” she laughs. “In their minds, they imagined Oscar sliding down on a rope like Tarzan.” Bruno adds, “It’s become a sort of mini sitting room where we surprise ourselves by often spending the evening with our children.”

hen we first met Ravi Jadhav and his wife Meghana, we only knew of their filmography. Little did we know that during this encounter they would let us in on their humble story. From a 1BHK in the outskirts of Mumbai to their current 2,500 sq ft, four bedroom apartment in the city, their graph has been remarkable. This was our cue of what the space had to be – glamourous yet grounded, borrowing from both their personal and professional lives. SETTING THE TONE The design process began by us connecting the dots of each phase in their life. We interpreted this through the rustic wooden ceiling, cast iron window railings, cement plastered bare walls and cement tiles that hearken to their past. The graphic floor tiles and the colours used represent Ravi’s academic term at the JJ School of Applied Arts and years in advertising and cinema. They wanted to hold on to their roots, while also embracing modernity. 191

Architect Dean D’cruz’s expansive family home in Goa is a splendid blend of history and homeliness, enveloped in a cocoon of green TEXT BY NADEZNA SIGANPORIA PHOTOGRAPHY BY FABIEN CHARUAU PRODUCED BY MRUDUL PATHAK KUNDU

The main verandah that leads you into the home features columns made from a single piece of Burma teak with solid wood trellis railings and Spanish Portuguese tiles that are as old as the structure

HOME GOA The smaller of the two living rooms doubles as a library, boasting a large collection of books from Dean’s mother and his wife Alice’s father. A mural themed on The Secret Garden runs along the wall, while curvilinear patterns adorn the 16ft high ceiling. Old family photographs, an antique chandelier, bookshelves from the old Saligao Club and seating from Dean’s grandmother’s Bombay home fill up this cosy space

198

Clockwise, from Left Typical of old Goan homes, the oyster shell windows allow privacy and bring in ample light; The step out between the main living area and the verandah showcases restored, old Spanish Portuguese tiles that feature varied patterns and add charm to the home; In one corner of the wrap around verandah is antique furniture from Dean’s grandmother’s Bombay home

L

ocated in a peaceful corner of Saligao, Goa is the sprawling 8,600 sq ft, Portuguese style villa with its beautifully restored 105 year old architecture. Dean D’cruz of Mozaic Architecture and his wife Alice, an English professor, lovingly call this home Villa Rosa Cruz. OLD WORLD CHARM The layout of their home is typical of large Goan houses. An impressive staircase leads to wrap around balconies and an entrance foyer with two living rooms on either side. Beyond this is a long multipurpose room which doubles up as a dining and family space. “A unique feature seen in the front of this house is the balcao (a porch) that overlooks a courtyard garden and allows for interaction with the outdoors. The main bedrooms give a view of the verdant greenery through generous corner verandas,” Dean explains.

TRUE TO ITS ROOTS Dean’s creations exalt local architecture and materials. He ferociously advocates sustainability and green structures. It comes as no surprise that very few alterations were made to their home.

199

The main living room holds many family memories including Dean and Alice’s wedding reception which took place here. French doors with pointed arches open out to the wrap around verandah. Pieces like a 100 year old family piano, Dean’s father’s desk and a meeting table from Alice’s ancestral home lend character to the space

An old light from The Bombay House illuminates one corner and a ship’s bell has been repurposed into a dinner gong

Masonry repairs, woodwork, adding electricity, and converting the trellis summer rooms into bathing spaces were some crucial changes. Original features like oyster shell windows and the 16ft high false ceiling with decorative panels and painted murals were retained. The most impressive feature is the Spanish and Portuguese flooring that despite being over a century old, shows no sign of deterioration. “The entrada (entry) floor is made of genuine China mosaic of old crockery,” he says. Throughout the home tall doors and windows with pointed arches evoke a sense of gracefulness and the riveted metal work hearkens to the pre-welding days. TREASURE TROVE OF MEMORIES Most of the furniture was bought by Dean’s parents, some sourced from antique shops and auctions at old Parsi homes. Heirlooms like a 100 year old family piano, meeting table from Alice’s ancestral home, a large collection of books from their parents, and chairs from his grandmother’s Bombay house fill the expansive rooms. “Our 14 seater dining table is Larsen and Turbo’s first boardroom table, a gift from Holk Larsen for whom my mother worked in the ’50s or ’60s. The home is an assemblage of memories of different friends. It was like keeping a memory of them back in India.”

...MY AESTHETIC IS USUALLY TO SHOWCASE ART OBJECTS AND LET THE EYE WANDER

208

M

y career over the past 25 years as a diplomat has allowed me to explore exotic, culturally rich countries. I was based for two to three years at a time in Jakarta, Kuwait, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, Cairo, Beijing, and now in New Delhi. I wanted my home to reflect the traditions and aesthetic heritage of diverse cultures in which I’ve had the pleasure of being immersed. I have been able to travel, document by photography, and bring home art, handicrafts and objets d’art which serendipity helped me find. I feel a sense of real pleasure when forms, shapes and patterns somehow connect in objects and furnishings which were purchased years apart, from different corners of the world. Each time I start an assignment at a new location, I relish with excitement the opportunity to create over the first month or two of settling in a new living space using my furnishings and artefacts in different juxtapositions, new colour schemes for walls, and new finds during my time in that country.

209

HOME NEW DELHI

Anchored by my usual preference for a muted palette such as charcoal, dove grey, ecru or taupe, over the years my aesthetic is usually to showcase art objects and let the eye wander. I have a penchant for sculptures and three-dimensional objects rather than art hanging on walls. The furniture, much of which I designed myself, tends to be contemporary in lines and minimalist in shape, while the objects I am attracted to are usually extravagant, ethnic and evocative with respect to the stories and history of that culture which are suggested from the appearance and patina. During these past three years in India, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed hunting for period pieces which represent the rich and ornate artisan traditions for which the country is renowned. From an antique pillar from Gujarat to temple chariot panels from Kerala, to bracelets from Orissa and half completed sketches for miniature Moghul paintings from Rajasthan, not only has my decor collection been enriched, but my travels and vivid memories from my time here have left their indelible marks as life experiences.

Coincidentally, the tie rack installed on the wall incorporates complementing embellishments; Sitting atop an ornate bridal chest from South India are rare pieces like a headdress with intricate birds and flowers carved out of tin and a necklace from the Miao minority tribe in China, a Bedouin diadem adorned with carnelian inlays and a Syrian Jambiya dagger Left A similar carriage-like elm bed from Ningbo, China was one of his discoveries while shopping in Shanghai in the late ‘90s. On one side is a rare Chinese art deco chair with a rattan seat

211

HOME NEW DELHI The master bedroom has a minimalist aesthetic. The table and floor lamps next to the bed are fashioned out of old Egyptian sheesha pipes. A wood cut print titled College Road by Chennai artist Vijay Pichumani covers one wall, supplemented by statues that are Khmer-style reproductions. A Bhutanese prayer mask of a deer sits atop a Ming Chinese elm cabinet

t was a winter day in New Delhi, a fancy lunch invite by Deepika Jindal and I wore my crush of the season boots with my best suit. Moments after walking in Will accosted me, demanding that I pull up the hem so he could get a better look at the red embroidery that ran down the side. He exclaimed, “If you can wear those, you have got to be interesting to talk to.” Later that day, I learnt that he was the jury member that had picked me for the award. With Will, you never know, maybe it was the boots that made the cut! He loved to shock, provoke, confront and debate. He wouldn’t be seen without a glass of wine and a smoke, wore whatever, and didn’t think it much of a necessity to shave every day or pursue any fitness goals. Not letting age dare temper him, he happily accentuated peculiarities over time. As a radical avantgarde creative, he pushed the limits of what’s acceptable like no one else. He once asked me to show him my sketches. On the first page was a random skewed form I had drawn, less building and more a scribble. He loved it and told me to build it

as it looked! He used to paint these huge canvases, all abstract and suggest those as buildings. These were a riot of colours, patterns, form and scale. His work was playful, witty and fun but never two-dimensional pop. There was a mindful carelessness about the expression with sophisticated design thinking underpinning it. He was roasted by critics, yet he consistently got commissions, awards and an Order of the British Empire (OBE). As a young architect, before getting to know Will as a person, I vividly remember the shock of pleasure when I chanced upon this crazy idea of a building that stood on tall, skewed props. Sharp Centre of Design in Toronto won him many awards and admirers, me included. When I asked why the building was up in the sky, he replied, “Because the building behind wanted a view of the street, I just lifted it up.” On his death, I posted on Facebook, “Carry on Will Alsop! Always terribly young, random, restless and pleasantly eccentric. A special man, a mad architect and a prophet no one heard.” Kalhan Mattoo
