FOREWORD
Small is more Following the great response from our Small Homes Issue earlier this May, we have returned with this year’s second edition of compact abodes that tackle the realities of micro-living with punch and panache. 7tilising a blend of ingenious Ćƒoor planning, innovative light and colour play, and adjustable or custom-built furniture, our selection of small homes demonstrates that limited space does anything but put a cap on creativity. Among our local homes are a Wan Chai studio unit that utilises verticallyoriented design to be able to Ć‚t all the necessary amenities 2g a couple’s apartment in leafy Tai Hang that combines the best of both their aesthetics 2g and an open-plan family home in Tai Wai that carves out enough space for young children 2g . We complement this curation with similarly diminuitive homes in Europe that transcend their given footprints to become everything from an art gallery in $erlin 2g , to a 2arisian home for two aspiring interior designers that doubles as their showcase 2g , and a /ilanese apartment designed in tribute to 5candinavian modernism 2g . Alongside engaging interviews and explorations into design and travel destinations, get a glimpse into living beyond and across boundaries this issue. For more inspiring homes and lifestyle stories, head to our online portal, www.homejournal.hk.

MIELE’S COMPACT CONVENIENCE SPACE-SAVING COOKING APPLIANCES THAT BRING BIG POSSIBILITIES TO SMALL SPACES
LHP: Con@activity 2.0 automatically extracts odours on the TwoInOne RHP TOP: Sous vide steam cooking, slow cooking, baking, grilling, all made possible with Miele’s steam combination oven RHP MIDDLE: The compact extractor creates usable space for storage and also building drawers RHP BOTTOM: Permanent pan-sizing accommodates various pan sizes
The open-plan kitchen creates a natural hub for the home and greater sociability whilst prepping and cooking. This convivial plan works particularly well in small homes, as do compact multifunctional appliances. Miele’s new TwoInOne induction hob, for example, features a built-in downdraft extractor that extracts odours precisely where they originate to ensure a pleasant room climate. The hob’s automatic function, Con@ctivity 2.0, also adjusts extractor power to what is actually cooking, and automatically switches the extractor on and off. The powerful extractor, which is only recognisable by its grille, sits in the centre of the hob between two variable PowerFlex zones. PowerFlex technology is exceptionally versatile as it allows for two individual rings to join up automatically when large pots or pans are placed on the surface. Other welcome benefits for small spaces include the fact that all of the technical components for the compact extractor are discretely hidden in a cabinet beneath the hob, and all moveable parts on the TwoInOne can be removed and cleaned in the dishwasher. This kind of convenience also extends to Miele’s Combination Steam Oven. In one single niche space, the appliance fulfils all your cooking requirements, allowing you to explore the endless possibilities of cooking even in a limited space. Alongside the combination cooking mode, you can slow cook with sous-vide, bake, grill, steam, and utilise over 200 automatic cooking programmes, as well as create your own or use the manual control. Its Combi Cooking ability allows you to define individual process stages and precisely determine not only the operating mode, temperature and time but also the humidity level inside the unit, which allows settings down to a precise one percent adjustment. There’s also an innovative wireless food probe that monitors the core temperature when roasting meats and fish and lets you know the remaining cooking time, so you don’t need to supervise the process.

The art of imperfection, known as “wabi-sabi” in Japanese culture, has become increasingly prominent in the design industry in recent years. This aesthetic concept is a search for beauty in innate imperfections and serves as a life philosophy embraced by modern tastemakers. From organic linens, pottery and ceramic homewares with a human touch to neutral, rustic tones, wabi-sabi’s presence is certainly boundless. By celebrating the beauty of craftsmanship and by decorating with terrazzo accents, natural wood, textural weaves, grained marble and organic sculptural forms, you’re set to curate a living environment that can stand the test of time – regardless of the size of your space.

Our company’s creative philosophy heavily relies on the contextual elements of each project. This is pivotal in informing our design process, as it reveals the parameters. From a formalistic point of view, we borrow from other creative Ƃelds such as art, literature and cinema. We have especially relied on cinematic grammar to achieve narration and movement within the spaces we design.
Designing for Hong Kong, &ubai or 0ew ;ork does not differ in terms of my approach, but it differs signiƂcantly in terms of process. /y approach is to create a spatial narrative, while my process involves connecting the narrative to the context. + am not a nsignature’ architect, but a ncontextual’ architect. /y work varies in different geographies, contexts, and places. I think well-designed small spaces are sexy. For small homes, you need to consider combining and overlapping programmes and spaces. If you had driven down Queen’s Road West during the better part of this year and reached the bend in the road delineating the neighbourhoods of Sheung Wan and Sai Ying Pun, you would most likely have been struck by a massive, minimalist mandala two storeys tall, composed of concentric blue rings and bound by a humming purple field, standing in juxtaposition to the surrounding grey hodgepodge of ‘60s-era tenement buildings. Such was the artwork (titled La voltice spirituale) that 3812 Gallery used to announce its ƃagship exhibition of the year leading post-war Taiwanese painter Hsiao Chin’s 6Q #P +PƂPKVG #UEGPFCPEG. The interior of the gallery was no less colourful, with Hsiao’s brightly coloured, meditative compositions exuding an insistent vibrancy, feeding off of the energy of the mustard yellow walls and brushed concrete of the exhibition space. Upstairs, gallery co-founder Calvin Hui sits in stark contrast to the undeniably wild colour palette of the third ƃoor collectors’ lounge – his dark wool jumper and subtly patterned dress shirt forming a spot of calm amidst the room’s rich purple walls, patchwork sofa and jarring black-and-white offset ƃoor tiling. “People always say that galleries are very intimidating spaces – very cold and white – but + think collecting art is part of a lifestyle, and as such, it should be very cultural and personal,” he explains. “The overarching vision here is to create a space that’s somewhat unconventional, that can deliver the 'art of living' concept to our collectors.”

Founded in 2011 by Calvin and his partner in business and life, Mark Peaker, the gallery brands itself as aspiring to foster the discourse surrounding modern and contemporary Asian art, with a speciƂc focus on ink art. While it began life in a ,000sqft industrial loft in Wong Chuk Hang, Calvin had bigger plans for 3812 – namely, a street-facing location that could better promote their artists. These plans were realised in 201 when, at a drinks gathering, his friend revealed that the Sai Ying Pun site that Calvin had so serendipitously been eyeing in fact belonged to his family. The rest is history. True to his “art of living” concept, Calvin utilises the gallery’s various spaces to expand the scope of the buying experience. “When we have friends and guests coming over, we can come to the balcony to sit down and have a drink. And when we have an exhibition opening, we’ll use the ground ƃoor to host a private dinner, to dine with the artist amidst his art.” At the end of the day, Calvin describes 3812’s ethos as diametrically opposed to the characterless white walls of the archetypal gallery. “+ live with art, so + don’t want to make it too pretentious,” he says. “When you curate a space, it’s a chance to create conversations or to trigger the imagination, or to let viewers connect with and experience the art. That’s why + don’t necessarily follow what other people have been doing. + just want to do something different.” // 80 | HO≤E JOURNAL | NOVEMBER 2018

It’s all an illusion. Mirrors are a design element with both practical and decorative purposes. 0ot only are they beautiful objects, they also enhance the sensation of space by reƃecting light and bouncing it back instantly – lighting up shady spots that don’t get much sun, harnessing any daylight and visually extending the area by tricking the eye. They help create mood, add dynamism, perfect and exaggerate symmetry and multiply views. Mirrors with a geometric design and different sized panels and thicknesses affect depth of Ƃeld. We can play with these to further manipulate light and reƃection, creating eye-catching fragmented reƃections that add extra drama and visual entertainment. Placing mirrors where we least expect them, such as on a table top, creates a magical effect. Fitted to shelving, kitchen and bathroom splashbacks, they add depth to the room – and like a beautiful painting or photograph, mirrors make a perfect focal point. They’re invaluable in enhancing views and also in deƃecting eyes away from things we prefer to keep out of sight. They hide storage and cover architectural nuances such as beams, of which there are many in Hong Kong homes. Two or three symmetrically positioned full-length mirrors, side by side on a wall or facing one another on adjacent walls, bounce light around a room, creating a fabulous magniƂed effect. Mirrors positioned between windows trick the eye into thinking there’s another window there – a term known as a “pier mirror.” When placed on either side of a window, they frame a view when 84 | HO≤E JOURNAL | NOVEMBER 2018

clad to a window recess, they bring in extra light and interesting reƃections. Added to the sides of doorways, they increase the feeling of spaciousness. Create a picture gallery of mirrors, with a mix of sizes, shapes and designs over a wall. Anything placed close to a mirror appears to have twice the mass. A ƃoral arrangement takes on more sumptuousness, and light from lamps and candles placed in front of mirrors are reƃected and ramp up the ambience. Antique Ƃnishes and tinted mirrors give a softer, more ƃattering reƃection, while dark grey and black mirrors provide a contemporary feel, and coloured mirrors add a pop of life to more minimal and industrial spaces. Mirror walls are by far the most effective and impressive way to magically enlarge your space to spectacular effect, reƃecting the room and making it look twice as large. This is invaluable in entry halls and stairways, and in bathrooms which tend to be on the smaller side in Hong Kong. And mirrors are just as valuable outside to visually enlarge space on balconies, terraces and rooftops, as well as in hiding ugly areas. They reƃect a borrowed view with the sky, trees and plantings from neighbouring gardens. Modern artists have turned their hand to mirroring. Sydney-based Jonny 0iesche’s abstract artworks have a translucent and reflective surface that plays with spatial illusion. And the 1racle sconce by artist Julia &ault and artistdesigner Christopher Stuart stuns with its pearlescent Ƃnish and contrasting forms. The Campana Brothers’ laser-cut, hand-Ƃnished acrylic Miraggio mirrors make a fabulous focal point for any room. 1r for a complete perceptual experience, consider a Mirror Room à la Yayoi Kusama, which will create the ultimate participatory experience for your visitors. Let the magic overtake you. //

Long gone are the black and white days of photography, cinema and television, when the images were more elegant, the silhouettes more graphic, and room was left to the imagination. Yet architect Marzio Cavanna did not design his home out of nostalgia. Rather, the 860sqft apartment is a tribute to Scandinavian countries where the lack of natural light is compensated by the skillful use of black and white. Located on the Ƃrst ƃoor of a building from early 20th century Milan, the house’s original layout – hallway, two bedrooms, a bathroom and kitchen – was abolished by Marzio’s reinterpretation of the ƃoorplan. Today, half the space is occupied by an open plan living, dining and kitchen area, while the remaining square feet have been distributed across the sleeping quarter, wardrobe and bathroom. “In my previous home, I noticed that despite the living room being very welcoming, my friends preferred to spend time in the kitchen,” says Marzio. “I kept this in mind while designing the new apartment, and opted for a very convivial solution.” This gathering point is anchored by a beautiful island of statuary marble – “an important solid material that acts like a magnet when friends come to visit” – that houses the cooking stove and sink. Behind it, a wall of black varnished wood mirrors the one on the opposite side of the room, framing the Ƃreplace. With the appearance of a boiserie, the panels double as doors for hidden built-in storage, alternating with metal shelving on which books are on display. “I love objects,” says Marzio, “I like the idea of introducing them in rotation, according to my wishes.” ඣ͉ᙘᄧdཋᄧཋ഼ჱඑؿˀɥֶɰι༦˾c ЎԅԒඏˮଠؿᇃૈcᑹτʵೕಲᆯᐲؿᄧཫڳ ԗಳмʵɈɺಕeಳϤcۺዾMarzio Cavanna̰τ ˞ᕤᓿݯᕀஉ߮ࡼֈe860̡ʿаؿ௰ϽܰΉ ˵ᅩਝࡼߎฑؿʨΔcԎ˞̝ќᆃᆻؿඣ͉ϳฆʹ ؒcᎴ˄ॠʨಳͮؿɺӷe 20αˤٱϝᙬɣᅢʑؿȹᅢࡈࣟѫʗПສτӶ ఢdԭංဣָdȹංࣼ۩ᄡָc܃ԞΕMarzioྩؿ ณᖐɎ๖ೕณͮeʌʨcɻȹ˸يංݯיβ ۪ᜨdඛᜨᄡָcɎʗПݯဣָdϸᓃࣼ۩e ᓿֈ۪ؿᜨᒖಳใธփɁcЎשʤڳΛᅕ௩ ෲၙΕᄡָe Marzio͐ٲi உ߮ณֈࣂ҈˞ϊݯ ᛆcፕእҡɁֲʝԞࢧؿʿ࣐e ࠇ͚مʶສ၀ᆽؿ፯ࠓɣଉ͏ɻࢌc ိᗐᒄྡྷ٩͂ࢿϬϬಳಳмʵԞ۪ɁکԞၙ එ cԎ˘ܰࠕᘅሹֺؿޕΕΔe܃ʿؿඣ ˃Ᏻ།يං̊ȹʿࠓؿౡʵೕͳსcԎҐˌᘅτΣᖚ ⥱ঁۂԞe࠹АپӸؿཚҐఘɃβذʏॖᒔ ᔀԞc།ஹͶ̯࣊ټؿᙔܼʃޚሣܮe ҈รෲ၀ ۂe Marzio႓i ͛௩ᚭ፭ʶ෮ረݚҡᒻיe ඣᏳං˿Ӯஉ߮༖ඨ۪ؿඛᜨcɻיτȹਜ਼ ᇃૈ೫ࣙؿقɥThonet౯c˞ʥMarzio͂Ԟᚼ

BOLD AND BESPOKE

Between these black walls, a more traditional living-dining area takes shape, with a linear table surrounded by eloquent Thonet chairs and a sofa custom-designed by Marzio in dialogue with classic pieces of design. Animal Ƃgures scatter throughout, while plates by John Derian are hung on the walls. Here, one perceives a preference for essential and clean geometry – in the silhouette of the Ƃreplace, the furniture’s designs, the minimalist pendant lamps. A softer palette lay in the bedroom, to which the boiserie motif extends, accessed through the dark wood-panelled wardrobe. With exposed shelving on one side of the room, the walls, this time, have nothing to hide. “The spaces alternate in dark and light tones that resemble a game of checkers,” describes Marzio. “So the bathroom is black and rigorous, with a tailor-made iron sink and towel rack, while the shower is bright.” ɾАϤऋПஉ߮ؿҳೕe৽ذᅡ̒ێ୮ޑӮcᏳɐڬτJohn Derianဥɥe۪ϬϬಳಳˌᘅؿ ረྰd்Ԯؿஉ߮ᓯ΄ؿɻՇԷᓯడЄؿነe ဣָɐܹϳዉcཚ࣐྇Ϭಳ֝ࢄcԎȹقငϭ૯˃ϸᓃeيංȹʿؿࡈܼذѼଓ ᚉcᏳɖʹӀτᒔᔀؿΔe ረݚҡ౧૯ϳሁيؿංτΣϹݗ౸ɥe MarzioѼࢀi ࣼ۩உ߮ጌඣҶcʹɐऋႇ ؿᚁሹޕˉɲܼcࣼංעͮڬe

The only other colours breaking out of this monochrome motif are the natural ones – in the wood of some furnishings, and the leather in the Eames Lounge Chair Marzio found in Antwerp, a valuable original from the very Ƃrst production. With control over the space and precision over the details, a tribute to the masters and a love for countries where, in the scarcity of natural light, one takes to excel in the use of black and white, Marzio’s home is an exercise in the careful selection and orchestration of shapes and materials, sans the interruption of colour.

Milk and cookies, Batman and Robin, 0etƃix and chilling some things in life are just better together than apart. The same is true for Max and Michelle Cheung, a married couple tasked with the project of refurbishing their 0sqft home in Tai Hang. Though neither of them are designers, the duo joined creative forces on their home, enlisting only a contractor to help execute their vision – to exquisite results, melding together classic details with modern touches. As self-confessed homebodies – “we are deƂnitely a couple that likes to stay in,” says Michelle – it was important for them that their abode be spacious and storage-smart. “We actively took decisions to artiƂcially expand our space,” she explains, unpacking the changes made to the original ƃoor plan adding a guest bathroom, knocking down walls to enlarge the master bathroom, shifting a wall to make room for a shoe cupboard, converting the kitchen layout to an 'L' shape, and creating space for a storage closet, the washing machine and dryer. Blue and grey hues, another preference they shared, were brought to life in the living room through a statement double-panel artwork purchased in 8ancouver. “We knew we had to take ˒̘ၤςթdᇫᇧڐၤᖓႝd 0etflix ၤ੫ඃˀiɁ́ɻτԒɁၤԑց߬ιᔶιྦྷɷ့ eMaxMichelle CheungʩਯᙔɌȹɈᖬeɀɁʃޚӷdɣࢄ෮ʨልɈᓺณ 0̡ʿаؿ ɣьࡼ්e ቱဳˢࠨԎܰڈਿพஉ߮cЎᓺณɮೡɻඩາᇼֻۺਆڏɰॶݠଊʶ͌ɻࡼؿֈᅡᅚcι గܰͅୀຝၤଊˤᒨ၈͚ᓱϤιؿ၀ᆽஉ߮e ኟᎼࡼֈ́ؿݠMaxMichelle͐ٲi ҈ࠨ௩ᚭۿΕࡼe ᄖᒏɌॶʿڏࡼؿذֈ ྦྷˢࠨԞ႓ʮԯࠇ߬eMichelleᙩ႓i ҈ࠨАȿΛҺցᜑֈֺޜԞҡᄖᄤe ˢࠨΕࡈࣟѫ ɐАΛඖҝ৽i˱உ۪ʸdזᏳۺˮҡɣ˚ؿɁࣼ۩dҡҝᏳϽສࢀढ़ᓃdҐᄡָࣟؿѫҝιL ѼdདजҡΛيϽᒻיϸᓃdݟϸዀৡϸዀe

There is something to be said of odd spaces – of ƃoorplans so unusual, any purpose for its use is unclear. 1ne might be better off tearing the place down and rebuilding a nicer one in its wake. Yet in the case of Apartment T111, a 0sqft home that, when outlined on paper, resembles an irregular dumb bell, Colombo and Serboli Architecture (CaSA) have demonstrated how unusual parameters have equal potential for chic results – possibly even more so. 1n the top floor of a building in Barcelona’s hip and happening Sant Antoni neighbourhood, Apartment T111 had undergone demolition for its new occupant, a young Italian professional who wanted a home for herself that could also be host to gatherings. Clean lines, plenty of light, and a bathroom connected to a large bedroom (that would equally be accessible to guests) were additional requirements for the peculiar space, spread across a narrow, corridor-like volume connecting two irregular polygons. It was an interesting challenge for architects Andrea Serboli and Matteo Colombo, who set out to make the space feel as spacious and cosy as possible. But rather than forcefully masking its irregularities, the duo opted to work with them instead – following the direction of the walls, reconƂguring parts of the room at an angle, enhancing their sense of breadth. In doing so, Andrea and Matteo may have Ƃgured out the apartment’s unique design essence – unlocking from it a minimalist, contemporary hideaway, airy with natural light and a seamless ƃow, from the resting quarters on one end to the convivial ‘day area’ on the other.

A pastel pink void demarcates the dining room, with its built-in bench that also doubles as storage, much of which has been incorporated throughout the home. Λ˲ॶɾА ॑ϳ˭ؿɃϽݯඛᜨcʹ˱ɐ˿ ٽؿذ౯ҡӮcΣϊୀʶ܆൴ؿ உ߮ୀຝͲ۰ޑӮe
With two balcony windows overlooking the street, the larger of the two polygonal volumes has been designated as the open-plan gathering space. 1n the farthest side, the building’s original brick wall – brushed over with white paint – marks the sitting area. A few feet away, a bench has been built into a void in the wall. Doubling as storage, it’s designed as seating for the dining space when paired with a large table. The bench continues past a corner – subtle evidence of the space’s proportions and angles – toward the corridor-kitchen, which occupies the linear body of the home. The porcelain countertop, its grey panelling concealing appliances such as the washing machine, dishwasher and fridge, stretches out to a specially-cut corner to accommodate the client’s wish for a breakfast nook. By the opposite end, the entrance area, painted burgundy, is thoughtfully outƂtted with oak wood details shelves to hold trinkets, a box to hide the electric metre. From here, the path to the bath and bedrooms extends once again at an angle, painted a pastel, sage green to demarcate the ‘night area’.

A built-in wardrobe lines the corridor toward the bedroom, a minimalist space marked by the same white-painted, exposed brick detail of the living room. 1pposite the wardrobe, a door similar to the sage panelling leads to the bathroom, a spacious volume awash in natural light and vertical tiles that elongate all sense of height. Built-in seating in a palette of wood adds a touch of luxury to the shower, its glass divider Ƃltering light out into the rest of the space. Take a step back from this considered abode, and it’s almost as though the blueprint bore no oddity, that the apartment itself was designed to speciƂcation – the irregularities deliberate, the quirks, intended. If the owner threw a party, and guests stepped through the burgundy entrance, and no one batted an eye, perhaps it’s safe to say that the space, all things considered, isn’t all that odd after all. //

One of the greatest challenges of designing an intimate space is when the needs of young children need to be considered. How does one balance function and practicality with style and comfort while ensuring the personal ƃair of the inhabitants is showcased! The lady of this house, a creative professional, took the reins when it came to renovating her family home in the 0ew Territories. At the outset, she envisioned a cocooning haven for her three children, which at the same time had ample space for them to play and for the family to entertain. She felt the obvious solution was to create (as much as possible) an open plan layout that would maximise the available space, while ensuring carefully delineated areas for different functions of the household – a spacious living and dining room, a sleek semi-open kitchen, a kids' study and play area, relaxing bedrooms and most importantly, lots of storage. “I think that sufƂcient storage is key to creating a stylish home, especially when you have Ƃve diverse personalities in the household,” the homeowner reveals. “1nce you have created enough cabinetry to conceal all your belongings and clutter, you can then consider some unifying themes around the household to work around design-wise,” she advises. “In our case, the kids' collections of Star Wars and superhero LEG1 sets, board games and my husband’s vintage comic books double as interesting displays and pair well with our art books and the fashion and landscape photography sourced from Taschen.” The homeowner worked directly with Arca Firma Ltd to bring her vision to reality. 1pting for a timeless palette of white and shades of grey as the base hues of the interior, she decided to paint a feature wall in anthracite which works as the perfect anchor for the Italian lighting, accessories and art pieces in the living room. They say that if you do what you love, you’ll never work another day in your life. Zurich-born Valerie von Meiss embodies this ethos and more, having turned her greatest passion – speciƂcally collage art – into a recognised profession. After studying International Communications in Paris, she worked in advertising for several years in Amsterdam, before moving to Berlin, where she founded Curve in 2017, an art space for contemporary collage located, of all places, in her own apartment. The century-old building in which Valerie’s apartment can be found is situated in Berlin's bustling Mitte Kiez neighbourhood, among galleries, restaurants, trendy boutiques and concept stores. The white-washed building features a magniƂcent (and for Berlin, quite unusual) grand spiralling staircase. For Valerie, it was love at Ƃrst sight. She reminisces “What I liked best when I Ƃrst saw the empty apartment were the very high ceilings, the beautiful old wooden ƃoors, but also the apartment’s quirkier features, especially the curved hallway. I was also very surprised to Ƃnd, behind a door in the hallway, some steep stairs leading up to a tiny guest room underneath the roof.”

Charmed by the apartment’s imperfections, Valerie chose not to renovate it, instead painting the walls in subdued colours in a natural paint made of clay wedge wood green for the kitchen and entrance, ice blue for the bathroom, slate grey for the Curve gallery space, and a shade of Misty Mountain for the bedroom. Measuring at 775sqft, the ƃat has everything one could need within a very proportionate layout. “Opposite of the entrance lies my bedroom, and next to it is the salon,” explains Valerie. “The Curve connects all the different rooms and acts as the signature feature of the apartment. That’s why I chose to use this long curved hallway as my exhibition space for collage art."

True to form, Valerie’s style is personal and elegant, contemporary yet casual. “I love to Ƃnd and mix vintage pieces with sleek, modern design,” she says. “I’m especially drawn to the ‘50s and ‘60s – in Berlin, you can still Ƃnd quite reasonably priced pieces. As I lived in Zurich, Amsterdam and Paris before settling in Berlin, my interior is a mixture of objects and trouvailles from these cities. I visit ƃea markets, but I equally gravitate towards contemporary design and some of my favourite pieces were found online.” As for her impressive art collection, Valerie calls it her true passion. Indeed, her bedroom hosts a part of her collection of contemporary collage art – all the better, she admits, for her to admire the artworks while lying in bed. “I was and still am inƃuenced by my mother’s joy of collecting photography,” Valerie elaborates on her artistic tastes. “Today I really enjoy discovering new talents in photo art and design, visiting inspiring art fairs like U0SEE0 in Amsterdam, Photo Basel and Photo London.” What, in her eyes, makes this place truly special? “The fact that my corridor functions as my gallery space, and that therefore I can work from my favourite place in Berlin – my home.” With inspiration to be found in every corner (and curve) of this apartment, it’s little wonder that Valerie has more than enough to share with friends, art lovers, and Berlin as a whole. //

INTERIOR DESIGNERS ARE INCREASINGLY SEEING MICRO-FLATS AS THE PUREST EXPRESSION OF THEIR CORE DESIGN PRINCIPLES “Designing a chair presents the opportunity to express my position — it is like a testing ground for ideas that interest me,” renowned Ghanaian-British architect Sir David Adjaye once said when asked about why chair design is seen as a rite of passage for architects. In the same way, at least in Hong Kong’s utterly unique housing market, interior designers are increasingly seeing micro-ƃats in the same light, as the purest expression of their core design principles. To YC Chen of hoo, this exercise began in earnest when he and project lead Arsan Law were tasked by a young female professional to redesign a studio unit that clocked out at a mere 340sqft – the smallest apartment in his portfolio by far. Essentially a single room, Florence, as this project would be christened, presented a “trilemma” whereby the client could only ever choose two out of the following three pieces of furniture: a sofa, a bed, or a dining table. To have all three, the only solution, as is so often the case in Hong Kong, was to build upwards. உ߮౯గ೩ᜑ҈τዀผٲ༠Ϭɯ͓ؿ ϽສcτΣᜑ҈ጙመؿ෮֨e ߜᘒ߹ ढ़ۺዾSir David AdjayeਐԷ౯உ߮Є˞ ഼ۺݯዾ̦༦ೡࣂᅚΑ೮eᅚΔc୮ Ӹࠗಋรݯዟऋָؿ۰̟ɻc۩ʑஉ߮ɖ ผҐɩ௰Ͻඖ͌ޜιࢄଊϬɯ࣏ʶАძࠤؿ ԙዀผe ྦྷhooؿYC ChenԞ႓cξΕˢඖ͌ଉ Arsan LawᏵȹϽαႦਿพɤֲկপࠇณஉ߮ඩτ 340̡ʿаؿɮА۩௰Ͻࣂ ˢ͌ک୮ଉ༦ɩ̝ ؿඖ͌ cɰഢ́ိล֨eᗲࣟԞ႓cܰω̋ ॶࢀɎȹيංؿஉ߮ඖ͌Florence˥۪Ɂ̋ॶ Εҳೕdဣѷᎁࣙɍّɾංፕԯɀe߬ɍّ࠹ cȹ˿Ϸؿʿ࣐cగ̋ॶፓ୮Ӹࠗಋ Ӯؿ২ؒi֡ɐೕࢄe

WITH MICRO-HOMES TO INCREASE IN NUMBER, HOO’S OWN TESTING GROUND MAY SPAWN A WINNING FORMULA YET Utilising the unit’s thankfully high ceiling, YC and Arsan decided to custom-build a stacked volume that would incorporate a cabinet on the ƃoor level, while ƃoating a double bed above. This left enough room for a standalone Urbani sofa bed from Ligne Roset and a bar table with bar stools from HAY. They also settled on a pared-back material scheme that only consisted of light plywood to convey a Japanese Zen mood – a necessary countermeasure to the project’s otherwise claustrophobic dimensions, and the client’s own busy life. “Our biggest challenge was to keep the colour of all the custom-designed plywood furniture consistent,” recalls YC. Their attention to detail certainly paid off: the result is a calming, if cosy, abode high above the hubbub of the nearby Lee Tung Avenue that welcomes in the west-facing view and even manages to Ƃt a single-gear bike on the wall – sporting an all-white paint job to blend in with the home’s minimalist aesthetic, of course. If you asked Parisian interior designers David Chaplain and Alexandre Roussard what their FGƂPKVKQP QH NWZWT[ KU, they’d list concepts such as “craftsmanship, details and experience.” Although they’re fairly young, they show a deep, nuanced understanding of luxury, with a careful view and a mastery of highly individual tastes. David is in love with Italian style, from Gio Ponti to Vincenzo De Cotiis, while among the French names he prefers Jean Royère and Jean-Michel Frank, as well as Rotterdambased designer Sabine Marcelis’ light installations. Alexandre’s tastes are equally eclectic; he admits loving the splendour of Bollywood Regency style and the glamorous interiors of Portuguese interior designers Oitoemponto, but he is also attracted to Rick Owens’ brutalist furniture. David and Alexandre met while they were both working for Louis Vuitton, but today they collaborate with different brands: Alexandre is the head of Diptyque’s store design and visual merchandising, while David, after collaborating with Chanel for a spell, now works for Kilian, a niche ߗБୀਐʱቭ۩ʑஉ߮David ChaplainAlexandre RoussardྦྷႚജτЄؒޜcˢࠨؿΑᎶɣ ลɖᔴɺ ɮᖚҌdୀຝၤ ೩ล֨eɀɁᒖಳαֆႦcЎྦྷڳႚജஉ߮τട૯ʘؿȿcྦྷ ၀ۂၤۂՈؿ഼ӯၤুұɖܰᄙω൚ಳeDavid૯ෲ෮ਝࠓࣟcGio PontiVincenzo De Cotis೩ɖܰˢؿ ࠖፕcؒਝஉ߮ۂಶɻˢઐिJean RoyèredJean-Michel Frankொऋɽஉ߮Sabine Marcelisؿཚ ສeAlexandreۂؿՈ͛ᅚɺדȹࣟiˢᒉෲᗸഠූပᗫࣩݢdOitoempontoୂؿႚജ۩ʑ⪶cЎ ࣂɌ૯ՇRick Owensؿଷய˚ຮ்ԮӡͶмʵe

A palette of dusky grey cloaks the apartment, accented with marble, brass, and floral elements for a sophisticated, moody ambience. ۂՈֲ ௰Ͻ˞Ϙϳӡ˚ݯcʹ˞ɣଉ͏d ඡႻd٦ᅚʏॖ೩Аᒨ၈cιగ၀ ᆽୀࣩؿe

perfume manufacturer. The heart of their work is in translating the deƂning codes of a brand into space and atmosphere. But when these codes are applied to a private apartment, like the one they live in, these ingredients have been joined by a greater sense of intimacy and a quest for authenticity. “There was no need to hide behind the name of a brand,” the duo explains. “When it came to our home, we proceeded step by step, focusing on our different points of view, helped by sketches and mood boards. And when our ideas were not at all close, we just came up with a third solution that would please both of us.” They had been busy looking for their new home for quite a long time, but they recall: “When we visited this 780sqft apartment in a late 19th-century building in the 10th arrondissement, we immediately realised we had found what we were looking for.” It was love at Ƃrst sight, an affair certainly buoyed by the caryatids on the facade, the reƂned stairs and the historical details of the interior spaces. The renovations honed in on craftsmanship and attention to accuracy, for which the design duo drew on their considerable past experience. “Preserving historical elements has been our undisputed priority, because the past is always a great source of inspiration for us,” they say. The original layout had been modiƂed, making room for a larger living space, reconƂguring the sleeping area, and adding a well-Ƃnished bathroom and a walk-in closet. The position of the kitchen has remained the same; it’s reached via a long corridor that seems to amplify the space.

DETAILED AND DELIBERATE
The duo has been intentional with every design element around the home, including the strategic use of mirrors, whether in the bedroom or the bathroom. ˠୀ૯܆ ࡼɻҰඖஉ߮яͅԭϽ۰˚ ၀ʶ୮ଉϤԞc˳ܢဣָࣼ۩ ̝ؿќᗂࠍ༜͂e
Materials, colour s, composition, furnishings and details, electrical sockets and handles – everything has been orchestrated with balance, favouring dark woods, different types of marble and a palette of greys, as well as brass and a strategic use of mirrors. “The challenge for us was to preserve the original atmosphere and celebrate it by restoring the stucco and all the decorations on the ceiling,” they explain. “We didn’t want a contemporary apartment, but a classic one with panache.” With regard to colours, David and Alexandre leaned towards a darker atmosphere, accompanied by a subtle play of lighter hues to soften the space. “We opted for grey shades, and here you can see seven of them,” they say. “Instead of white, we preferred a pale grey hue and instead of black, we chose dark grey, calibrating its presence so that the further one ventures into the ƃat, the more the tones darken. The same colour progression can be seen when entering the bedroom, bathroom and walk-in closet.” As for the furniture, those purchased in galleries or at Marché aux Puces live together with the owners' personal designs. At first glance, one notices the elegant Willy Guhldesigned chairs from 1959 ƃanking the Ƃreplace, as well as the 1970s coffee table with an engraved brass top and, of the same period, the two Austrian glass appliqués placed just above the chairs. Among the duo's creations are the large bookcase that occupies an entire wall, combining brass and ebony Macassar wood, and the dining table, developed from two light brass trestles purchased at the Saint-Ouen ƃea market. On them, they decided to place a valuable Brecha marble top, creating a distinct contrast. In the custom-designed kitchen, the duo's vocabulary is at its best: accurate, with a touch of glamour, bearing in mind the functionality and the pleasure of cooking. “This is our favourite room,” they both admit. David and Alexandre dream of opening a studio of their own, where they can devote themselves to interior design projects. If you consider their home as a manifesto of their aesthetic tastes, the possibilities are absolutely tantalising. //

Straight, broad and serene, the Kamogawa River has served as the lifeblood of Japan’s ancient seat of high culture, Kyoto, for innumerable generations, channeling fresh water from the mountains to the north into the city’s heart and giving rise to its unmatched traditions of kyo-yuzen dyeing, pottery, and a thriving culture of haute cuisine. At the height of the autumn foliage season later this month, an amble along its riverbank would bring you across many vignettes: the grey herons wading past ƃocks of waterborne spot-billed ducks, families gathered for momijigari, or leaf-viewing picnics, and, through a break in the blazing foliage, a glimpse of the low-slung yet regal form of the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto. Sat on the edge of the water, the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto caused quite a splash when it opened in 2014, bringing with it a local sensibility and intimate awareness of Kyoto’s unique, often impenetrable character that nobody had expected from an international hospitality chain. The building itself, housing 134 rooms and 17 suites over four ƃoors, was designed by 0ikken Sekkei Ltd. to be unintrusive (efforts to keep its height in line with city regulations necessitated the building to be sunk two stories into the ground), and to adhere to the concept of miyabi, or the Japanese interpretation of elegance. This aesthetic continues inside the interiors by Peter Remedios, where subdued, softly lit spaces are highlighted by an extensive art collection focused on local artists, and displays of Kyoto craftsmanship throughout – think intricate shippo cloisonné, exquisite lacquered surfaces and textiles from famed local fabric mill Hosoo. Inner-facing rooms have a view of a Japanese ܑ፷ᄖᒏϤ೫ؿق᎓ɭc˖˖ˤˤܰˀ̯ʼʝ̀ԕ߬ࠇؿ՜ॵcɺΔҐ˵ࠍɬ ɐˋݠؿԷ̟ɻʶc̙өˮ˖ވዟτؿԕʤᐋܷϳႇඨҌᖚc˞ʥᇠؿگঢ়ज़ࢿଉʼʝe ̯˂֛ܰΔޭտሌสؿঢ়ࢋࣂຝc։ࣂΕ᎓ɭ،घүੀɺνiၵᜢΕ،ɐ࢘࢘ಌ ٦ჽ᎓ະhݯȿ ່ ݻЩሌส cȹࡼɣɩၙޚயᎁcᑹτగܰᅢۺɺঢ়Ўൔࣩਫജؿԕ ᗫ˺܆ဍནৈ֙ȹደe ໃ᎓ɭ،घؿԕᗫ˺܆ဍནৈ֙כ2014αพࣂ౦ʵȹᙼ৽cΐݯԕʀɁȹိվ ঢ়ᗒ˞ᘩ࿅ؿᘨcಲɁ෮ࢿԷȹࡼਝۂಶৈ֙ॶΣϊȿൎٶԕؿዟऋֲeৈ֙ᅢ ঢ়̒ᄙcͳτ134ංָ۪17ංࡨָcͅˀۺஉ߮࣡βผ߲مஐኧɆஉ߮eݯȿ˥ৈ֙ၤ՚ྊϬ

Zen garden immaculately tended to by resident gardener Suzuki-san, but the river-facing rooms capitalise on the hotel’s highlight, where one can languidly observe the ƃow of time along the Kamogawa. The suites, meanwhile, offer spacious moon-viewing terraces and tatami rooms for a true Japanese experience. The restaurant interiors, designed by Design Studio SPI0, prove to be exquisite stages for Kyoto’s culinary tradition to shine. The Japanese restaurant, Mizuki, is divided into four cuisines: kaiseki haute cuisine, served on dishware designed by contemporary artists; Edo-style sushi served on a Wajima lacquered counter; Kappo-style tempura, and teppanyaki. Italian restaurant La Locanda features a private dining room reassembled from the former 1907 townhouse of industrialist Denzaburo Fujita with 700-year-old wooden elements, and wouldn’t look out of place in a Yasujirĥ Ozu Ƃlm. High-end Parisian patisserie Pierre Hermé occupies a space in the lobby, while, elsewhere in the hotel, a full-service spa by ESPA offers head-to-toe pampering. In an ageless city dyed by the patina of history, the Ritz-Carlton Kyoto beckons to enfold guests in a rich tapestry of traditions borne, both literally and Ƃguratively, by the steadfast waters of the Kamogawa. //

It doesn’t have the cachet of being Canada’s capital, nor the distinction of multi-cultural mountainous Vancouver, but in recent years Toronto has become a dynamic destination with an appeal all of its own. Here we pick our favourite parts of this spirited city.
VISIT
Starchitect Frank Gehry’s Ƃrst building in Canada was the redesigned Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, popularly known as the AGO. The building itself has typical Gehry traits including a dramatic glass-and-wood curved façade, while inside there’s an excellent collection of Canadian art through the ages, including works by internationally renowned Canadian Jean-Paul Riopelle. For something more contemporary, The Power Plant at the Harbourfront Centre is Canada’s leading public gallery. The intriguing space, formerly an actual power plant, has mounted conceptual and groundbreaking shows by Canadian and international artists. Get back down to earth in GrafƂti Alley where street artists have taken to every wall with some seriously Instagrammable pieces. Art and starchitecture are not limited to the city centre. Travel out towards 0orth York district, and wonder at the Fumihiko Maki-designed Aga Khan Musuem and its surrounding Aga Khan Park complete with reƃecting pools and gardens by landscape architect Vladimir Djurovic and the Ismaili Centre, which was created by late Indian architect Charles Correa. The museum was the setting for the 2018 Pritzker Prize Ceremony, too – Maki is a Pritzker Prize laureate himself and Correa served on the prize jury for some years – which took place in May and saw Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi take home the coveted award.

SHOP As a nation, Canada may not be very old, but a walk through the city’s Distillery District allows visitors to travel back in time to before its founding. The beautifully preserved area was originally home to the Gooderham and Worts Distillery, founded in 1832. Today its cobbled streets are lined with large-scale sculptures while the former distillery buildings house restaurants, galleries and chocolate makers, as well as some intriguing stores such as Distill, where visitors can discover well-crafted Canadian design ranging from fashion and accessories to homeware; mini mioche for cute kids apparel designed and made in Toronto; and pioneering skincare from the Toronto-based The Abnormal Beauty Company. There’s plenty going on downtown, too. 401 Richmond is a restored industrial building-turned-art hub that’s home to artist studios, design shops and galleries and is well worth a wander. To get closer to Canada’s own designers, try the Harbourfront Centre Shop for one-of-a-kind Canadian pieces, or the Drake General Store, just over the road from the stylish Drake Hotel, where quirky, contemporary Canadian-made goods and gifts abound.

DIVERSE FLAVOURS
From authentic Italian and Middle Eastern cuisines to the perfect cup of coffee, the food scene in Toronto is diverse and thriving. ᔔఒಥՈ Λ࠷ΛࠕؿಁβᎶτသτc ̳ր෮ɣСപԷɻപ ࠗወՊ͛τ˳ܢe
EAT Is there a cuisine of the world that isn’t available somewhere in Canada’s cosmopolitan city of Toronto? From Syrian to Ethiopian, Greek to Vietnamese, it’s all there. For a taste of the Middle East, Byblos is a must. The contemporary eatery features carefully considered interiors that match the well-presented, distinctively ƃavoured food. Buca is home to quality Italian in sophisticated surrounds – the Yorkville outpost has a chic industrial feel, and delivers exceptional service with food that is lovingly prepared, creative and enjoyable. For something new, Aloette is not to be missed. The French bistro from the team behind Alo, voted Canada’s best restaurant, offers dialled down dishes that deliver on ƃavour in a chic diner setting. For a taste of Canada, Canoe, with its fabulous 54th-ƃoor views over Toronto, incorporates some of the Ƃnest seasonal produce, from 3uebec foie gras to bison steak, and West Coast oysters to Ontario burrata, not to mention wines from Canada’s best vineyards. For something more casual, Café Belong at Evergreen Brickworks is unpretentious yet elegant, serving delicious organic and local produce with an eye for the environment.
DRINK Toronto’s coffee culture is alive and well and can be found on almost every corner. There’s plenty of choice if you are in the market for something stronger, too, whether you head for hippy, hipster Kensington Market where Grey Gardens, with its tasteful design and a pick of Canada’s choice wines, is something of a haven; or to trendy Bar Ravel, a Gaudi-inspired tapas bar with intricately carved, dramatic wood interiors. Downtown, Cactus Club is a chic spot catering to city slickers, while east of the city, on a sunny day, the Rooftop at The Broadview Hotel is not to be missed. The bright, airy space – with an adjoining patio – offers unobstructed views of the city.

STAY Art-centric boutique hotel, The Drake will appeal to those looking for more than just a place to rest their head. Enjoy an eclectic programme of performances and visual art alongside the hotel’s own permanent art collection, as well as regular live bands, DJs, Ƃlm screenings, comedy shows and poetry slams. There’s never a dull moment. Meanwhile, on the other side of town, The Broadview Hotel has taken on a new lease of life following a long history that has seen it go from grand, imposing Dingman Hall, once a hub for high society, to notorious 19thcentury strip club Jilly’s. Its latest incarnation is as Toronto’s newest luxury boutique hotel with on-trend design, curated artworks, sunrise yoga sessions, oyster evenings and the city’s coolest rooftop bar. Hints to the property’s past nevertheless remain, with architectural details that allude to its storied heritage. //
