‘Our love of candles shouldn’t contribute to our planet’s waste’
@GoodHomesMag
L
ooking for clean-burning candles with no nasties during her pregnancy, Karen Maxwell came up with the idea for Little Karma Co. in lockdown 2020. Free from fake fragrances and chemicals, the company’s vegan, 100-per-cent natural scented candles are handcrafted, refillable and can be personalised, making gifting simple and eco conscious. Who’s your design hero? I’ve been obsessed with Nicki Bamford-Bowes since watching her on Interior Design Masters; some of the design solutions she comes up with are nothing short of genius. The creative side is what I really love about my business –from building the essential oil blends, to the styling and photography of the collections. What’s the last account you followed on Instagram? I’ve just discovered @ctolighting. I believe great design is all in the details, and beautiful lighting plays such a huge part in making a space. Where’s your favourite place for inspiration? Since moving out of London, I find myself inspired every time I return to the city, from the architecture to the street style. What’s next on your interiors shopping list? I just love updating my soft furnishings and accessories each season. I’ve recently bought a new sofa from Swoon, so I’m on the hunt for complementary pieces to give it the oomph it deserves. We decided on a navy smart wool fabric that’s machine washable – perfect for dogs and a messy toddler! Shop at littlekarmaco.com or follow @littlekarmaco

our years ago, with new jobs and a growing family, Marieke and Jeroen Heesters felt the time was right to look for a new home. Having lived in places like The Hague and Roosendaal, the couple decided to begin their search in the province of Brabant, where Marieke is originally from. With a primary school across the road and shops just around the corner, the property they found in Breda was in the ideal location for raising their children, without being right in the centre of the city. ‘When we found the house, I thought it was gorgeous and immediately had a good feeling about it,’ recalls Marieke. ‘It’s in a very child-friendly yet lively neighbourhood.’ Husband Jeroen had reservations, however, as the property needed a major overhaul and was not decorated to the couple’s taste. ‘It took quite some imagination to see what it could become, and to recognise its potential,’ admits Marieke. But once they decided to put in an offer, Jeroen was committed to taking on a large-scale renovation and came up with a plan, taking charge from day one. ‘We hired our own builders and contractors, and Jeroen coordinated the entire project,’ Marieke explains. ‘We also rolled up our sleeves and did a lot of the work ourselves. Within three

months of purchase, the house was as good as done and we could move in.’ The project was a self-confessed ‘labour of love’, but despite working extremely hard, the couple say they enjoyed every minute of the renovation, knowing that each job they undertook was one step closer to achieving their dream home. The criteria was simple: to preserve and restore as many original features as possible and ensure that any newly introduced elements either matched or complemented them. ‘We wanted to respect the period and character of the house, while creating a cosy, welcoming home,’ says Marieke. ‘This was as much a restoration as it was a

renovation. We upgraded the wiring and plumbing throughout, uncovered the ornamental ceilings and managed to keep the original herringbone floor that had been laid in part of the ground floor. We did opt for single glazing for some windows though, because we felt that double glazing would ruin the look and feel, especially for the front façade.’ The work began with the hall, which with its authentic glass doors and marble flooring, oozes 19th-century grandeur. As the ceilings are so high, Marieke painted the lower half in a slightly darker tone to make the space feel cosier. ‘The floor was laid on loose sand, and you can hear the crunch beneath your feet when you walk on it,’ she says. A new kitchen was then installed, with an understated, floating concrete floor put in. However, while the old kitchen was being ripped out asbestos was discovered, something the couple hadn’t bargained or budgeted for. It was a temporary hiccup, and an unforeseen expense, but they ploughed on, installing full-height, steel-framed glass doors in the kitchen, to allow natural light in

Middle living room One of Marieke’s favourite spaces in the house, the middle room with its 3.5m-high ceiling is home to the biggest of the Christmas trees, which Marieke buys in early December

from the garden. French doors in the dining room encourage the light to flow from space to space, and unlike mid-terrace properties that only receive light at the front and back, windows on the side wall add brightness to the middle room. ‘The previous owners loved this house and had lived in it for almost 50 years,’ Marieke says. ‘We felt an obligation to them to treat it with the same devotion as they had.’ The neutral colour palette of pale green, chalky grey and white shades with well-chosen furnishings connect the separate spaces, while

the old and new glazing draws the eye from one room into another. When the internal doors are open it feels like one unified area; however should you need privacy, a quiet moment, or an opportunity to practise the piano, they can be easily closed. ‘I would recommend for anyone planning a project like ours to read lots of magazines, cut out images and create mood boards to get your room schemes right,’ advises Marieke. ‘These days Instagram and Pinterest are also a fantastic source of interiors inspiration.’

Despite the size of the rooms, Marieke made a deliberate decision to not overfill the spaces, resulting in a relaxed and calming interior where ‘less is more’ is the motto. Taking inspiration from Scandinavian living, the furniture and accessories are a clever mix of designer pieces Marieke has collected over the years, and vintage or bargain finds. To keep costs down, the couple used paint colours from Farrow & Ball for the ground-floor walls and ceilings, while
upstairs they chose more affordable paint brands from their local DIY store in a similar palette. ‘I particularly love our middle living room, especially in the winter when we turn on the fire, put up the Christmas tree and decorate it together,’ says Marieke. ‘When the big day finally arrives, I love nothing more than setting the table with my favourite festive pieces and waiting for family to arrive, so we can all enjoy a celebratory meal together.’

finally viewed it, we just had to have it,’ says Claire. But being rented out by different tenants had taken its toll on the house. ‘It was like a squat, with enough animals to fill a zoo,’ she recalls. ‘All the doors and walls were scuffed and there were piles of sand on the windowsills due to the single glazing. However, the proportions ticked all our boxes.’ Being in a strong position, the couple’s offer below the stamp duty threshold was accepted, and they spent the first two weeks shuttling back and forth from Claire’s parents’ house with an army of family and friends helping to gut and clean the property. As they didn’t need new central heating, electrics or re-plastering, the main jobs were installing double glazing, sanding the floorboards and painting the walls white. ‘We lived like that for a while as we didn’t know how the light would affect each room or what our collective style would be,’ Claire explains.

But before long they realised the white living room walls didn’t suit the space. ‘It’s a big room and it didn’t feel very cosy, so we painted the walls and ceiling dark blue,’ says Claire. ‘It felt lovely in winter with the twinkly lights on – like a gentlemen’s drinking den – but in summer it felt too dark and gloomy.’ Although Paul still loved it, repainting the ceiling white was a happy compromise. ‘It’s completely lifted the room, yet you still have the drama of the walls,’ explains Claire. The revamp also included replacing their brown leather sofas, Chesterfield chairs and a chaise longue with two huge modular sofas found
on Gumtree – a task which ultimately necessitated removing the living room window. ‘It’s changed the whole feel of the room,’ she says. ‘But there’s still ample space for our big family who often visit, and plenty of room for our daughter Wren to play.’ Claire and Paul’s least favourite room was the kitchen: the doors were hanging off, and they hated the laminate flooring, turquoise mosaic splashbacks and black marble-effect worktop. Initially, they painted the walls and tiles white until they could afford to replace the units, swap the laminate flooring for grey tiles and buy a new range cooker. ‘Paul fitted everything himself,’

After painting and adding lino as a quick fix, the pair eventually found some parquet flooring from a school in County Durham that would form the basis of their new look. ‘It cost just £50 but it took weeks to clean off the bitumen!’ says Claire. ‘At first we just did the floor but I carried on up the back and side wall too. This room has just celebrated its 7th birthday, and we still love it as it’s so unusual and unexpected.’

missing. ‘It gets quite dark in the afternoon so we always struggled with this room,’ admits Claire. ‘We realised we needed a statement piece like in the living room, and having used an eye-catching mural wallpaper in the bathroom, we decided to do a similar thing in here.’ Although the couple’s dream was to install reclaimed parquet flooring throughout the ground floor, at over £4,000 it was just too expensive, so they eventually settled on a plywood floor stained black, which cost £350. ‘Even if it doesn’t wear very well or we get bored with it, that’s okay as it hasn’t cost us an arm and a leg,’ says Claire. 64 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM -$18$5<

ike many homeowners over the last 18 months, the driving force behind Lara Cross and Dan Sanders’ house refurb was prompted by staying home during lockdown. ‘We became much more aware of how little of downstairs we actually used, even though it’s a big space,’ explains Lara. ‘The living room felt too formal and the kids had grown out of the playroom.’ The area that bothered Lara the most, however – and had done for years – was the back of the house. The previous owners had extended, creating a bright, multipurpose living space but had placed a small, poorly designed kitchen to the side. ‘Myself, Dan and my three teenagers used to huddle around the breakfast bar and not really use the rest of the room, which was absurd,’ recalls Lara. ‘The kitchen was just too small for a house of this size.’ Having bought the property in 2010 with her previous husband, Lara had redecorated and reinstated the period features, but over the years JANUARY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 69

We all wanted an engaging and inclusive environment to cook, eat and socialise.’ The old kitchen area was then turned into a snug – with a bar. ‘We took the Aga out of the chimney breast but we didn’t need another fireplace,’ recalls Lara. ‘It was actually a picture on Pinterest that inspired me to install the bar, and it’s perfect – we can have pre-dinner drinks and go straight into the new dining room.’ In here, Lara has decorated in pale pink to complement the period features and her three favourite oil paintings. shade of teal. ‘I’ve always loved that teal is neither blue nor green, and liked the idea of using a bold block of colour,’ she says. ‘The shade has become a neutral of sorts in our home because I’ve decorated three rooms the same, changing it up with different-coloured furnishings and art.’ The scheme is a bold departure from Lara’s previous preferred palette of light neutrals, which evolved after she decorated the living room before the kitchen project began. Growing up on a farmstead in South Africa, Lara’s mum had always used colour. ‘There’s so much natural light over there and colour works, but I was a bit nervous that going too dark might suck out the light here,’ she says. ‘But Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue proved the opposite. I turn a light on, hang a picture and the tone changes – it’s so beautiful and versatile that it was too good to use in only one room.’

Although Lara had teal in mind for the kitchen too, other factors were also at play. Friends had clubbed together to buy her and Dan a painting as a wedding present, which Lara wanted on prominent display. Fired Earth’s Provence green glazed tiles had also caught her eye in a magazine – and she then saw them again in an Instagrammer’s kitchen. ‘The tiles kept drawing me in – they remind me of cafés and restaurants on French holidays,’ she says. ‘It was the combination of the
tiles, the teal and our painting that saw the colour scheme emerge in this room, with touches of mustards and golds.’ The project began in July 2020, but wasn’t too much of an upheaval as the family were able to use their old kitchen until the new one was fitted. As well as building the bespoke kitchen, their builders Multiserve – also Lara’s friends from South Africa – made suggestions about how better to use the space, advising switching the island to run vertically down the room, JANUARY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 75

‘Nothing feels squeezed in,’ says Lara. ‘The en suite is gorgeous, like a hotel bathroom, which I’m convinced is because we didn’t travel last year!’ Lara still loves her native African furnishings made from raw organic materials, such as the coconut bead lampshade, animal heads and cow hide rug. ‘I usually bring a whole suitcase home full of things I’ve bought in South Africa made by amazing artisans,’ she says. ‘But with lockdown restrictions I’ve had to be more resourceful and find African homewares from places like Etsy instead.’ Lara and Dan’s home was finished in ten months, and now restrictions have lifted, the house is often used for location shoots or rented out on Airbnb. ‘I love knowing people enjoy our home as much as we do,’ says Lara. ‘When we did the big reveal to friends after lockdown, no one could believe we hadn’t done any structural work. WINTER HOMES UPDATED TERRACE Main bedroom ‘This room challenged me the most as the mocha velvet headboard looked too dark, and I wanted to lighten the space,’ says Lara. ‘But the Lewis & Wood Beech wallpaper is beautifully tranquil.’ Ikat cushion covers from My Little Wish and scalloped bedlinen by Sophie Conran add delicate detail to this restful space
En suite Herringbone wall tiles and a bespoke shower screen up to the ceiling trick the eye into thinking this room is bigger than it is, and positioning the bath from Victoriaplum.com close to the shower doesn’t compromise its use in the compact space. All the tiles are from Tiles Direct, with the pendant lighting from Industville

SHOWSTOPPING SPACE Teamed with dark walls and copper accents, Wren’s Milano Elements range in Metallic Slate Matt and Washed Concrete Matt create a kitchen that’s perfect for entertaining
Tom & Neilson
‘We love that the wow factor is built right in’ When Tom and Neilson popped into their local Wren showroom, little did they know that their dream kitchen would be designed, built and ready to install just two months later…

B
ack in early 2020, Tom and Neilson visited their local Wren showroom in Huddersfield. ‘We were driving past so thought we’d pop in and have a look,’ explains Neilson. ‘We were so impressed with what we saw, and the amazing deals available, that it really made us think seriously about a new kitchen.’ Built by its previous owner in 2014, the couple’s home – an Austrian chalet-style house in Denby Dale, West Yorkshire – is 4,500 square feet, eco-friendly and has a timber frame with steel beams. Plus, its clever design means that every wall in the building is moveable. ‘We already had planning permission to extend the property and, after what we’d seen at Wren, we decided to renew the kitchen at the same time,’ says Tom, who moved in with husband Neilson and his three children in 2018. ‘We knew exactly what we wanted from the outset and Chris, the Wren designer that worked with us, really listened and did everything he could to accommodate our ideas.’ Tom and Neilson are both accomplished cooks and like to prepare food together, particularly when they’re entertaining, so the space needed to be practical as well as visually pleasing. ‘We didn’t bother looking anywhere else as we felt that Wren had exactly what we wanted,’ explains Neilson. ‘And after
speaking with Chris, we were confident Wren could deliver against our very specific specifications.’ Once the kitchen was designed, Chris then helped the couple to find the perfect Wren-approved installer. ‘Tom and Neilson needed someone who could go above and beyond, who could re-wire, build stud walls, plaster and plumb as well as rip out the old kitchen before prepping and installing the new one,’ explains Chris. ‘So no small task!’ And the process with the installer really was the icing on the cake for the couple. ‘Nothing was too hard for him, nothing was ever assumed, and he kept us informed with the kitchen’s progress with a daily report,’ says Tom. ‘He was good fun too, describing our new, four-metre island as ‘more of a continent of its own!’’ There are 13 appliances in the kitchen, including two wine coolers, an undercounter fridge, hobs on the island and a Bosch integrated coffee machine. The modern, masculine lines of Wren’s Milano Elements range in Metallic Slate Matt and Washed Concrete Matt with Copper profile give the space a contemporary edge, and the colour theme is consistent with the rest of the house. ‘There’s a one-stop-shop element to the kitchen,’ says Neilson. ‘It’s the focal point of the home and a place we love to entertain in. It’s great to be able to prepare food or nibbles and drinks while people congregate around the island – it keeps everyone together.’ It’s safe to say the couple are very proud of their new kitchen, which comes into its own during the festive season. ‘We just love spending time in it,’ says Tom. ‘Whether that’s relaxing as a family, or throwing one of our legendary parties.’ MULTIPURPOSE LIVING The couple chose a statement four-metre island for the space, which has become the hub of the home

RECIPES VEGAN NIBBLES
Gr een go o dn ess
Spinach Christmas tree SERVES 6 • 200g Violife Greek White cheese, crumbled • 1 block vegan puff pastry like Jus-Rol • 200g frozen spinach thawed, with water squeezed out • 1 tbsp olive oil • 1 small red onion, chopped • 2 shallots, chopped • 1 leek, chopped • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped • 1 tbsp fresh dill, chopped • 1tsp lemon zest • Salt & fresh ground pepper • 2 tbsp almond milk • 1 tbsp sesame seeds
If you want to make it non-vegan, Cheshire or feta cheese is a simple swap, and you can use egg wash on the puff pastry
1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/ Gas mark 4. To make the filling, heat the olive oil in a large pan and add the red onion, leek and shallots, frying until soft. Add the spinach and cook until it is no longer watery, then add the dill, parsley and lemon zest to the mix. 2. Remove from the heat and add the crumbled vegan cheese, and a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Set aside to cool. 3. Using a rolling pin, flatten out the puff pastry until 1cm thick. Cut out two big triangles of the same size with a small rectangle at the bottom, to create the shape of a Christmas tree. Use a ruler if needed to make it easier to create straight lines. From the leftover pastry, cut out some stars for decoration and set aside. 4. Place the spinach mixture inside one of the tree-shaped pieces of pastry, leaving a 1cm border, then press down with a spoon so it is smooth and not bumpy. Lift the second Christmas tree pastry and place on top of the filling. 5. Using a sharp knife, cut ‘branches’ 2cm apart, carefully lifting each branch at a time and twisting. Repeat with all branches and add the stars to decorate. 6. Lightly brush the pastry with almond milk, then sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 30-40 mins or until golden.

In a large bowl, add the flour and pinch of salt to the yeast mixture and begin to knead until the dough forms and is at the right consistency. Oiling a separate bowl a little, place the dough inside, cover with a moist cloth, then leave in a warm place for one hour or until it has doubled in size. 3. In a bowl, mix 1 tbsp of olive oil, the cubed vegan cranberry cheese, chopped
garlic, paprika and thyme. Season with salt and pepper to taste. 4. Roll out the dough and chop into fistsize pieces. Open up each piece and place a handful of the mixture inside. hether you are looking to upgrade an existing fireplace, stove or fire with a newer model, or don’t currently have a fireplace and would like one, there are a few key benefits to choosing a Gazco gas model. Convenience Many Gazco gas stoves and fires come complete with a remote handset as standard, enabling you to find your ambience from the comfort of your sofa. And if your home isn’t connected to the mains gas supply, there’s no need to worry. All Gazco gas stoves are also compatible with LPG bottled gas, which
means they can be a suitable option for high-efficiency heating in any home. Ease of installation If you have an existing chimney, a variety of Gazco’s gas appliances can be installed without a flue liner, for a faster and more cost-effective installation. If you don’t have a chimney, balanced flue models make it possible. Appliances such as the Gazco Loft (above), £2,719, work by drawing in the required combustion air directly from outside the home via a twin-wall pipe through the wall. As well as negating the need for an existing chimney,
this also makes them more efficient, as they are completely sealed from the room in which they are installed. Tailor the look Offering striking flame visuals and realistic fuel beds, gas fires such as the Gazco Reflex 105, from £3,929, can often be mistaken for the real thing. These designs can also be tailored with your preferred choice of linings and frames to deliver the perfect focal point. There’s no compromise on flame views, with many models featuring non-reflective glass as standard, so you can be sure your Gazco gas fire will look spectacular every time.

COLOURFUL RENOVATION
‘WE’VE GONE FOR A MIAMI VIBE’ South London meets Sunshine State in Christine Hughes’ bold and bright kitchen Feature JO MESSENGER Photography MALCOLM MENZIES WHAT DIDN’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR PREVIOUS KITCHEN? Pretty much everything, to be honest. It was dark, had very little worktop space and felt closed off from the dining room, with access through an archway. Although the units were fairly new and in good shape (we actually decided to sell them to save them from going to the tip), the layout was awkward, with the sink and some essentially useless surface space in a little lean-to addition at the back. A large cupboard that housed the hot-water tank and boiler also took up valuable room. HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE THE SPACE? The lean-to was structurally in terrible shape, so we had it rebuilt with wraparound bi-fold doors on the corner to bring in more light and create better outdoor access. We have a small garden and didn’t want to lose any of it, and didn’t see a huge advantage in extending to square off the back of the house to make the kitchen larger, so we stuck to the original footprint and reworked the space. This included moving the washing machine under the stairs, while installing a new boiler meant there was space for the fridge where the water tank used to be. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE YOUR KITCHEN COMPANY? We came across Pluck as they are practically our neighbours, and we were keen to support a local business. We were able to go to 100 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM JANUARY 2022

the workshop to see how the kitchens are made, and loved their use of colour and close attention to detail. We were after a bit of a statement look as well, so Pluck was perfect. WHAT WAS YOUR BRIEF TO THEM? It was pretty straightforward – bright and cheerful with ceiling-height cupboards, as I hated the wasted space on top of our old units. The shade we chose, called Lido, is gorgeous and creates a 1980s Miami vibe when paired with our salmon-pink dining room. The Corian worktop also has a very
subtle sparkle to it, which makes me happy whenever I look at it. TELL US ABOUT THE NEW LAYOUT We moved to this house from an open-plan flat that was very sociable, so we wanted something similar. With the interior wall removed, the new peninsular unit faces the dining area and helps define the spaces. I toyed with the idea of finding a vintage haberdashery counter, but opted for a design that matched the units instead. It was the right decision and is more practical.

WHAT WAS YOUR BUDGET? We spent around £80,000, but this included other work in the house – not only the rebuild and kitchen – as we also added three sets of floor-to-ceiling bi-fold doors in the kitchen and living room. DID EVERYTHING GO TO PLAN? We had great builders, and it was finished on time and within budget. In the middle of the project, a stray cat turned up in our garden and decided he wanted to stay. The builders were very obliging about letting him in and out all day – and we even had a cat door fitted! HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR NEW SPACE NOW IT’S ALL FINISHED? We just love it. It’s so bright and colourful, and feels very ‘us’.

Perfectly measured, professionally filtered and 100-degree boiling, discover the benefits of instant boiling water with the stunning new EVOL-S Pro – a specification-busting, semi-professional 4-in-1 kitchen tap that’s quietly yet confidently changing the game. The EVOL-S Pro boasts many standout features, a highlight being its precision measuring feature – an ingenious time, energy and water-saving rotary dial that lets you set exactly how much boiling or cold filtered drinking water you want for the task in hand. Simply touch the intuitive control button and precisely the required amount is dispensed. The semi-professional mixer tap has a robust, flexible spout with a dual spray control for standard hot and cold flow, but features a second, insulated spout for the safe delivery of true boiling or cold filtered drinking water. What’s more, both spouts can be used simultaneously, so you can rinse your vegetables while getting a jumpstart on pasta or blanching tomatoes. Drinking water is treated and purified through a professional, five-stage filtration system, which is heated and stored in a specialised 4-litre titanium tank. Titanium

WHAT DIDN’T YOU LIKE ABOUT YOUR ORIGINAL BATHROOM? The year after buying our new-build house, we decided to revamp this room as it lacked personality and colour. The problem was, Sam and I have quite different tastes, so settling on a design we both loved took ages. WERE YOU INVOLVED IN THE INITIAL DESIGN PROCESS? We lived with my mum for five months while our new home was finished, which meant we
could choose the layout and upgrade some of the fittings. After placing the bath behind the door for privacy and tucking the loo away by the window, everything else just slotted into place. To inject character, we picked a 1930s-style suite from the builder’s supplier, with a freestanding bath, vanity unit and shower cubicle. WHAT DID YOU DO NEXT? Phase two of the makeover started seven months after moving in. Painted tongue-

and-groove panelling was a must, but Sam wasn’t keen on my idea of floral wallpaper on the top half. We couldn’t agree on any styles and it felt like we were going round in circles when I came across a botanical design in the sales. Thankfully, Sam loved it too. DID THE PROJECT RUN SMOOTHLY? Doing things in two stages meant undoing some of the work already undertaken by the builders, like removing the splashback tiles, taking out a shaver point we didn’t need and ripping out skirting boards. However, our joiner
managed to install the panelling without taking the suite out. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR BUDGET WORK FOR YOU? The developer gave us a good discount, and I primed and painted the bath and vanity unit to save money, but we got a decorator in to do the wallpaper. I picked the same marble mosaic floor tiles that we’d had in our previous house, as I loved them so much. Finally, I painted the window alcove with leftover pale peach paint from my daughter’s bedroom. It was a quick 15-minute job, but it ties everything together. JANUARY 2022 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 113

HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW IT’S FINISHED? I love it, and friends and family think it’s like a five-star hotel. It’s the family bathroom, so is mainly used by the girls, although Sam has a bath in there every day. I tend to use the shower in our en suite, but do have the occasional soak after hockey. It’s so relaxing to look at the wallpaper when lying in the tub with some candles lit. WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY? Not really. I’d love to have loads of plants around the bath but Sam rolls his eyes every time I bring a new one home! I’m thinking of adding a picture above it, though. I’ve thought about painting the door in coral and the ceiling peach, but that might be a step too far for Sam!

ANOTHER LEVEL
Replacing a cramped loft conversion has given the -HURPHV D VW\OLVK OLJKW ƓOOHG EHGURRP DQG HQ VXLWH Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photography LIANE RYAN Project PLUS ROOMS
WHY DID YOU REPLACE THE EXISTING LOFT CONVERSION? When we bought the house four years ago, it was dated and needed to be completely renovated, but we loved the garden and green views and knew we could make some real improvements. The loft conversion, dating from 1975, was so cramped and low that you couldn’t stand up properly in much of it, and there was a tiled cupboard that was supposed to serve as an en suite. Gaps around the window meant the space was always freezing cold in winter, and we never went up there.
Q
HOW DID YOU TACKLE THE PROJECT? We’d seen Plus Rooms featured in magazines, and spotted one of their vans, so asked them for a quote for a new timber dormer to create a main bedroom and en suite. They drew up plans, which included a replacement staircase, and gained planning permission before starting work,
Q
during which time we slept downstairs in the living room. The timber dormer has been clad externally in slate to match the new roof, with grey aluminium windows, rooflights, and sliding glass doors installed. The pandemic meant work was halted for a month, but luckily the builders were able to make the space watertight beforehand. WHERE DID YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR THE INTERIOR? We wanted to keep the scheme neutral and then dress it with colourful furniture, plants and artwork, so used magazines and Pinterest to help us plan, before shopping online. Plus Rooms installed the sanitaryware and decorated the rooms, and everything ran really smoothly. There's underfloor heating in the shower room, and the extra height has allowed for both a bath and shower. The whole space feels private and isn’t overlooked, so we can open the sliding doors and really enjoy the feeling of being high up above the trees.

The timber dormer has been clad externally in slate to match the new roof, with grey aluminium windows, rooflights and sliding glass doors installed NEED-TO-KNOW: LOFT CONVERSIONS MEASURE THE SPACE Loft conversions can cost less than half the price of building a new extension as the basic structure is already in place, and planning permission isn’t always required. Some lofts can prove expensive to adapt, though, and space will also be taken up by a new staircase, so make sure that you’re actually gaining more living space overall. SEEK EXPERT ADVICE Many specialist companies offer complete design and build services, and although work times vary, use 8-12 weeks as a guide. THIS MONTH, FIND PAINT EFFECTS AND PERFECT PLATTERS… @goodhomesmag
Interiors inspo @dark_revelry Lynne and partner Josh began their account as an easy way to update friends and family on the transformation of their Manchester home during lockdown – and their creative, quirky style is a mustsee for fans of an Abigail Ahern-esque decorating scheme. We love the couple’s uniform use of dark colour, neon accents and statement lighting, which includes a homemade tassel chandelier.
Reno diary With her passion for interiors inspired by hotels and architecture abroad, Jodie and partner Olly started renovating their derelict Victorian maisonette nearly a year ago, with the aim to bring a holiday vibe back to Nottingham. Check out their grid to discover how each room is being lovingly restored with colourful, unique twists.
