hello
SOMETIMES AN IMAGE just speaks to you. That’s how I felt about the bathroom on our cover this month, spotted while on one of my middle-of-the-night online interior design inspiration trawls. It’s by California-based designer Brooke Wagner (@brookewagnerdesign) and it evokes the exact vibes I love in a bathroom: calm, relaxing and earthy. The sandblasted limestone floor, zellige wall tiles, natural curtains and brass fittings are all so beautifully textural. And the accessories, well, they add a layer of decorative freshness that I think every bathroom needs. If you don’t love your bathroom and a major overhaul isn’t on the cards, why not go for a style redo instead of a reno? Start by clearing everything out and giving the space a good scrub. Then, only put back what you actually use and swap in some new towels, a few cute storage vessels and a posh handwash. I promise it will make a world of difference. This issue we have more than 130 totally gorgeous buys to give your bathroom a stylish makeover, so flip to page 102 to start shopping. Though shopping and decorating are fun, for many people in flood-affected areas, the heartbreaking reality is that so many homes and livelihoods have been destroyed. If you want to help, but you’re not sure how, head to homestolove.com.au/help-flood-victims-nsw-qld-23492 to find out how you can donate and volunteer. Here at Real Living, we hope that our pages give you some distraction for now and inspiration for when you’re ready to rebuild, redecorate and get back to your new normal. We’ll be with you every step of the way.

what’s in a frame? While it’s not the central focus, frame style should be a key consideration. If you want the mirror to function like an artwork, look for something striking to attract attention. Conversely, frameless mirrors will recede into the room and help visually expand a space.

space crush This new retail space allows you to immerse yourself in the wonderful world of floristry WHEN ED WEST, DIRECTOR OF SYDNEY’S POHO FLOWERS, engaged spatial communications practice Akin Atelier to bring his vision for a new Double Bay flagship shopfront to life, he wanted to create a space that challenged the norms of retail floristry. “We wanted a space that aligns flowers with luxury, and that’s welcoming and enables anyone and everyone to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of floristry,” says Ed. “It was important to us that it had a timeless feel, one that represents where Poho is today and where we see Poho evolving in years to come.” Poho Flowers is the first tenant in the new Cross Street development, gifting the Akin Atelier crew a blank canvas on which to build. Tactile materials and finishes, such as Venetian plaster walls, quartzite benchtops, stone furnishings and stainless steel fixtures, are complemented by a subtle palette, with the brand’s signature ‘Poho blue’ imparting a cool and calming tone that contrasts nicely against warm pinks, greys and gentle neutrals. Despite the many different textures used within the store, no single surface competes for your attention. Instead, every element feels curated and purposeful – much like the perfect arrangement of flowers, says Ed. “We wanted to create an oasis and an escape, and we achieved that with the soft palette, and by including a beautiful Gemma Smith painting, which hangs behind our concierge station when you first enter,” says Ed. “The furniture begs to be enjoyed. Each piece is comfortable and inviting, and we’ve included some vintage pieces to pay homage to the heritage of the brand.” R @reallivingmag

MODE RN HISTO RY
FROM VERY HUMBLE BEGINNINGS – a garden shed in East London – one of the world’s most beloved bathroomware brands was born. It was the late 1970s and friends Bob Perrin and Greg Rowe shared a fascination with traditional manufacturing methods. The pair had gained a reputation as ‘go to’ guys for anyone who needed an engineering problem sorted out and decided to go into business together – and so Perrin & Rowe was born. In between taking on projects for other companies, the men worked on their own ventures. The idea that would see them go on to develop an international reputation was their invention of a three-in-one tap (that dispensed hot, cold and filtered water) – it was a world first. Good old-fashioned craftsmanship is key to the Perrin & Rowe ethos: to this day, everything is constructed to last and finished to exacting specifications. The company also prides itself in the fact that everything it makes is conceived, designed and engineered at headquarters on the edge of East London: ‘mass production is not our business’ the Perrin & Rowe website proclaims. All brassware is made from a low-lead brass, with a surface that’s plated to a thickness that exceeds industry standards, which ensures a deep, protective coating that’s resistant to wear and pleasing to the eye. Every single tap is also individually water-tested. Another focus of Perrin & Rowe’s is on producing timeless designs that won’t date and that fit into the ‘modern classic’ mould. Over the years, Perrin & Rowe has shown great commitment to Australian designers and homeowners by dedicating a section of its factory in England to producing all tapware in DZR (dezincification) brass, which is required by Australian Standards. “Perrin & Rowe has been called ‘the Porsche of tapware’,” says Shirley Marshall, media manager for The English Tapware Company, which distributes the brand in Australia. “As patents have expired, Perrin & Rowe’s designs have been widely copied. But it’s very difficult for other companies to make high-quality brassware that has the detail of Perrin & Rowe designs. Their work might be copied, but it’s never equalled.” R
1978
Perrin & Rowe was initially established by Bob Perrin (above) and Greg Rowe, two English engineers and friends who decided to go into partnership together, with the aim of solving manufacturing problems for others.
1980
By the early 1980s, Perrin & Rowe was focused on developing and manufacturing its own products. The company acquired its first factory in Essex, which is where its headquarters are located to this day.
1998
The British Midlands was losing its ceramics industry to offshore manufacturing, so Perrin & Rowe harnessed local expertise to manufacture its own basins and toilets. Shown here is the 1 tap-hole design from the Art Deco range.
2022
Today, Perrin & Rowe offers a broad range of tapware styles that span from the proudly traditional to the sleekly modern. Shown here are the Contemporary filtered water tap in Gold (right) and the Callisto lever in Polished Brass (far right).

Making Peace Living in the centre of a busy city didn’t stop one creative couple from turning their dark apartment into a supremely serene family retreat photography muk van lil styling sandra keja planken words bron bates
homes Perfect illusion Interior designer Sandra Keja Planken opened up the home through her generous use of colour. Soothing sage flows from the ceiling and on to the door frames that lead to the sunny interior courtyard. Custom-made curtains in matching green linen complete the unified effect. Down to earth In the sun-drenched bathroom (opposite), earthy tones make for a welcoming place to bathe. Sandra designed the walnut cabinetry and tiled flooring, then completed the space with a soft dacron Sinclair lounge chair from Fest and a Berber rug from HK Living. A

IT STARTED, as many good things do, with a Pinterest board. Charlotte and Vincent had lived in their inner-city home for close to two years before they took their ideas to designer Sandra Keja Planken of Studio Noun. The brief was to give their poky 1860 Amsterdam apartment a complete makeover. As their home sits in a heritage building, there were limitations to the changes they could make. “We weren’t allowed to do anything on the outside,” says Charlotte, “but we kept lots of original interior beams.” GO WITH THE FLOW The cramped interior was overhauled to create a sense of openness and expansiveness with the use of colour. “We live in the middle of the city and wanted peace and serenity by using shades inspired by nature,” says Charlotte. Sandra chose terracotta and sage green hues to feature prominently throughout the home – soft pink marble punctuates the living and dining areas, while paint in soothing Calke Green by Farrow & Ball flows from the ceilings and on to the door frames that lead to the interior courtyard. Another highlight is that the living room boasts a custom-made curved wall complete with a matte finish in Farrow & Ball’s Orange Coloured White. Sandra added layers of warmth to the living space by choosing seating solutions with gentle, rounded edges, and bespoke soft furnishings such as a tufted wool rug she hand-painted. MAKE IT PERSONAL Infusing their apartment with a personal and unique atmosphere was also a priority for Charlotte and Vincent. “We wanted to have the feeling of being on an exotic holiday, while still being at home,” says Charlotte. Creating an abode that had enough space to eat and make music with friends and family was also top of mind. In the open-plan kitchen, a glossy dining table crafted from a local fallen tree and cast in epoxy resin stands ready to welcome guests. Inviting retro Vitra chairs were given a new, personal lease of life by being covered in a velvet fabric hand-painted by Sandra. “We’re very happy with the end result,” says Charlotte. “In our fast-paced lives, our house is a safe place to come home to. It embraces you.” R

Warm welcome The distinctive entry wall was designed by Sandra, made by Arno Hoogland and finished with Orange Coloured White paint from Farrow & Ball. Entry point Charlotte (above) and her partner Vincent made a Pinterest board to show interior designer Sandra, who used it as a jumping-off point for her design. Sandra suggested they touch objects to gain a sense of how it would make them feel. Unique proposition The living room’s rug (opposite) features a playful hand-painted pattern representing the eyes of Sandra’s father and her children. A @reallivingmag

3 ways to use colour in a small space
1
Commit to a unified style throughout the home. Repeating colours and textures will add continuity and create cohesion.
2
Don’t be afraid of bold colour. Choosing a statement shade on walls and cabinets adds character. Use colour on the ceiling to draw the eye upward.
3
Balance colour with accents. Consider using materials such as timber, marble and stone to bring a natural air of expansiveness to smaller spaces.

Balancing act Sandra made sure there was something for everyone in the kitchen. Vincent loves the cabinets with blue steel frontage and curved corners, while Charlotte favours the soft pink marble splashback. Great wall A hallway with a textural difference leads to the dining area. Courtyard comfort Inviting vintage bamboo chairs were given bespoke treatment. Sandra painted the cushions with strokes of indigo in a pattern that reflects the pavers. Bold statement Servomuto Giardino ceiling lights (opposite and below) add sculptural elegance to the dining space, effortlessly tying together the angular lines of the cabinetry and ceiling beams with the curves of the custom-made dining table and chairs. Plants placed by the windows add a touch of natural abundance. A

Family matters Charlotte and Vincent discovered exciting news during their home makeover – they were expecting their first baby. Sandra extended the design to include a nursery and brought the grounding tones of terracotta and stone through to the baby’s room. The vintage rocking chair was re-covered in hand-painted velvet upholstery, while a Stokke Sleepi cot continues the motif of gentle-edged pieces. @reallivingmag

homes Opposites attract Tones of soft green and dusty pink follow through to the master bedroom, with bedlinen from H&M Home and custom cushions in the same bespoke Pac-Man design as featured on the dining room chairs. In place of bedside lamps, Sandra chose art deco-inspired pendant lights with green braided rope by Contardi Lighting. A

Artfelt Alliance It was love at first sight for artist Annie Everingham, who had eyes for this Spanish Mission-style bungalow years before it even hit the market. Now, she and her husband have made it their own photography muse photography styling lauren steel words holly byrne
homes Dining in Annie and husband Chris had easy access to furniture suppliers thanks to their property styling and hire business Mode Hire. They opted for a table from GlobeWest paired with MRD Home dining chairs and a vintage Turkish rug. The large framed artwork is one of Annie’s pieces, as is the fish artwork in the background kitchen. The pink piece is by Prudence Caroline. Instant appeal Annie was smitten with the house (opposite) the moment she spotted it on a walk one day. A

57
ANNIE EVERINGHAM WAS living in the northwestern suburbs of Newcastle, NSW with her husband Chris when she walked past her future family home one day. “I just fell in love with it,” Annie recalls. “It was just so unusual, and it had so much character – from the Spanish-style garden to spiral columns, it just really drew us in.” Two years later, it was theirs. “It just happened to be put on the market exactly the same week we started looking to buy together,” she says. “It needed a lot of love, but at the same time, you could tell it had been well looked after and loved by the various families that lived here.” Renovating was always part of the plan, but they lived in the home for two years before picking up the tools. RICH HISTORY “When we moved in, the lady across the back fence came over with printouts and photos detailing the history of the home,” Annie says. The neighbour and her husband had previously owned the home, but subdivided the block and built a smaller home for themselves behind the original. “She told us that the man who built the home in the 1930s was a builder and out of work during the Great Depression, so he built it for his family.” Some superficial interior elements had dated, but the foundation and the house’s architectural details were solid. “All the previous owners treated it with a lot of respect,” Annie says. OPEN HOUSE The top renovation priorities for Annie and Chris included a greater connection to the outdoors and a flowing floor plan. They enlisted the help of local firm Murray James Design and rebuilt the kitchen and laundry at the rear of the house within the existing boundaries. The bedrooms and living room remained as they were. As an artist, Annie had a clear vision for the interior style. “I wanted to keep everything quite pared-back, earthy and neutral, because I knew that my style of collecting homewares and art, and the pieces that I decorate with, are usually a lot more pattern-filled and colourful,” she explains. “It’s changing all the time, and that’s something I enjoy – changing up as my style changes and the art changes.” R

Kitchen bliss “My husband is the chef so he dictated the appliances,” admits Annie (with Max the King Charles cavalier). Urban Joinery built the custom kitchen. “We did a pared-back, lipped-edge cabinetry except for the top row of cabinetry, which is a thin, slatted profile to tie in with the splashback tiles from Academy Tiles,” Annie says. The benchtop is Caesarstone Primordia and they chose a polished concrete floor. The artwork on the right is by Loralee Jade. Let there be light A skylight (opposite, left) soaks the bathroom in sunshine. “A jacaranda tree hangs above this space, so when it’s in full bloom all you can see is that beautiful violet,” Annie says. The Vizzini ‘Alberta’ bath is from Renovation Kingdom, travertine-look porcelain tiles were sourced from Newcastle Tile Co and the tapware is from ABI Interiors. Poolside perfection A precast concrete plunge pool by Plungie was supplied by Dip Plunge Pools and is a recent addition (opposite, right). “Our little boy Augie loves the water and we try and use it every day,” Annie says. An umbrella from HK Living and an outdoor lounge chair from Ikea complete the scene. A

Neutral ground The brown-vein marble coffee table from GlobeWest in the living room is one of Annie’s favourite pieces in the home, while the Tribe Home rug brings warmth and softness underfoot, to Augie’s delight. Max has a stylish dog bed in the shape of a floor cushion from McMullin & Co. The side table and sofa are also from GlobeWest, and the floor lamp is from Milk & Sugar. A framed traditional African mudcloth adorns the wall. Child’s play For Augie’s nursery (opposite), Annie collected pieces over time. “We ended up with a sweet, gender-neutral room because we didn’t know his gender before he was born, but I feel it suits him and his personality so much,” she says. A Mogu Takahashi ‘Swan’ print from Fine Little Day hangs above the Babyletto cot, and the mobile from Electric Sun Creatives was a gift from Chris’ parents. A

Work space The sunroom became Annie’s home studio while she was on maternity leave with Augie, and a home office for Chris during lockdown. Before the renovation, doors closed the space off from the rest of the home. “We felt like we couldn’t truly appreciate those windows without opening it up,” Annie says. “Now, in the mornings so much beautiful light just streams in.” A

3 ways to collect art with heart
1
Choose pieces that you love. “Invest in art that just really speaks to you and brings you joy and makes you excited,” Annie suggests. Keep this rule in mind and collect over time.
2
Let your art inspire your interiors, not the other way around. “Lots of people buy artwork to match their existing belongings, but I would say prioritise the art,” Annie says.
3
“You don’t have to find an artwork for a specific wall or spot, and keep it there,” Annie advises. Move your pieces and rearrange them – each new spot gives a new appreciation of them. A real living

Grand entry Annie and Chris decided to keep the home’s original front door, replacing the old red stained-glass panels and giving it a coat of paint to suit their style. “It ended up being a really big door frame, so it was actually easier to keep the original one,” Annie says. “I’m really glad we did because it’s another nod to the heritage of the house.”

WHEN BEVERLEY NEWBOLD moved in to her Bondi apartment in 2015, she had every intention to renovate. “It took longer to materialise than actually expected, which is not uncommon,” she says with a laugh. Fast-forward five years, and just as works were about to finally begin, a global pandemic caused further delay. “In that time, all the things that I had decided to change just drove me crazy,” Beverley says. “You think you’re about to say goodbye to those bangy cupboards, and suddenly you’re stuck with them for another six months in lockdown.” It wasn’t just the clumsy kitchen cabinetry, though. “Everything was a bit square, and it had a fair amount of relatively horrible tiling,” she explains. The tired and dated interiors needed a refresh. THE RIGHT FIT “It took me a little while to find someone that I trusted,” says Beverley of her search for the right interior designer. She found the answer in Brooke Aitken of Brooke Aitken Design. “A mutual friend told me about Brooke… I met her and immediately liked her very much,” she says. “I had confidence that she was someone I could work with. She was clear about managing my expectations and understood that my ideas were going to take a bit of articulacy.” SEEING GREEN The brief for Brooke and her associate director Delphine Hernot was simple. “I wanted green,” Beverley says. “It’s such a peaceful colour – it’s the colour of nature. It can be a range of shades but there’s always a softness about it that I love.” Brooke and Delphine didn’t take long to work out the rest. “Beverley is a partner in a very big law firm, so we knew that she needed a space that she could retire to after a huge day and feel very relaxed, but also something that really suited her personality,” Brooke says. “We could tell that she was very elegant from the way she dressed, but she’s also a huge beach girl.” TROPICAL TOUCH “There’s a palm tree view out my kitchen window – it’s in someone else’s backyard but it creates a tropical sense which I wanted to replicate within the apartment,” Beverley says. She didn’t want anything garish or over-styled, and certainly not beach-themed or Hamptons-inspired. “Design that reflects an environment which was celebrating the outdoors,” is how Beverley clarifies it. “Celebrating nature, and with that tropical overlay.” R @reallivingmag

who lives here? Beverley Newbold, a partner at one of Australia’s largest law firms.
FROM FAR LEFT Curves ahead “If we can include a curve into our work in a way that’s appropriate, we will,” says designer Brooke, who incorporated the arched doorway into the design. “There’s a deeply held love of curves that a human brain likes.” Free range There was no requirement for an externally vented rangehood, given that Beverley (pictured) isn’t a big cook. “I didn’t need a big kitchen,” she says, which was music to Brooke’s ears. “All of a sudden there was just this lightness to it, and not having to have a rangehood was a major play in that,” Brooke says. Highs and lows “When I sit on the end of my sofa, I can look up and see the air-conditioning vents and the lines of the balustrade in the same view – it’s so perfect and clever,” says Beverley of the curved bulkhead with integrated air-conditioning which has become a favourite feature. Mosman Herringbone Rustic floorboards from Havwoods replaced dated Italianate-style tiles. Beverley purchased the framed photograph by Juli Balla, Untitled 11 (2015), from Olsen Gallery, while Bomma ‘Umbra’ pendant lights from Spence & Lyda and a trio of Lincoln Brooks ‘Sake’ barstools give guests plenty of room to gather. Gathering place Beverley’s existing sofa was re-covered in a tropical print fabric – it and the timber sideboard are among the few pieces she kept. The Sarah Ellison ‘Alva’ armchair from Life Interiors adds a feminine sense. In the centre of the room, the &Tradition ‘Lato’ side table from Cult and a GlobeWest ottoman create contrast beside the Moroso ‘Net’ coffee table from Hub Furniture. Firing up A gas fireplace sits beside the television and above custom cabinetry in the living room (opposite, top). “It blends into the background,” Brooke says. Step by step “This is what you see as you walk through the door,” says Brooke of the stairway leading to a rooftop garden (opposite, bottom). Tiles and a metal balustrade were replaced with timber and battens. A real living

3 subtle ways to introduce a tropical aesthetic
1
A leafy green print is synonymous with tropical style. For a sophisticated approach, choose a pattern with muted hues.
2
Cane, rattan and timber are all essential to this aesthetic, but control is key. Balance a few main pieces with sumptuous fabrics and lush layers.
3
Shades of green are the obvious selection, but look to pops of earthy hues such as dusty pinks or rusty mauves for warmth in your design.
FROM FAR LEFT Spa day “We suggested that the bathroom be different to the rest of the apartment,” says Brooke. A Vigo Lena marble benchtop from Artedomus pairs with a custom vanity in Dulux Bleaches. The curve motif appears in a round mirror from Gallery Direct. Rosado herringbone mosaics, Inigo Jones & Co. Wardrobe of wonder In Beverley’s bedroom, a seven-metre wardrobe is clad in Voyage à Cochin wallpaper by Ananbô, specially ordered from France. “My wallpaper cupboards make me smile every time I look at them,” she says. A curved bedhead from Naturally Cane sits alongside a Nuura ‘Liila’ wall light from Great Dane, with a Glitz rug from The Rug Collection living up to its name. Bathroom bliss “We wanted this to feel like a light, restful space so Beverley can relax,” says Brooke. A bath was her client’s only request, and a round Clark freestanding tub fits the brief. Walls were finished in Microcement by Chic Coatings in a colour to match the vanity. Chambord limestone floor tiles from SNB Stone are the perfect foundation. A @reallivingmag

who lives here? A professional couple from Melbourne, their two teenage daughters, and Belle, their cavalier king Charles spaniel. Eatas.com.au | @architectseat
RUGGED, CAREFREE AND LOW-MAINTENANCE, this beach house on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula isn’t the type of home you typically find by the seaside. Constructed almost entirely from concrete and blockwork, it was created to be a holiday escape for a busy family of four from Melbourne by Albert Mo, the director of Melbourne architecture and interior firm Architects EAT. HOLIDAY HAVEN “We wanted to design a house that provides a sense of escape, one that is memorable for the children,” says Albert. “The location of the site is next to a public footpath that supplies access to the beach. We had to design a house that provided intrigue and interaction with the street, but also privacy for the family. We also needed to design for the coastal lifestyle – salt water, coastal winds and harsh summer sun,” says Albert. “It can be a tough environment for buildings.” TAKING SHAPE Architects EAT began work on the project in 2017. A bunker-like design reminiscent of a pyramid that is firmly anchored into the pale sands of the surrounding environment was chosen as the final product, with special consideration given to the texture and materiality of the interiors. “The house is very private, with a large, north-facing oasis positioned in the middle of the plan, surrounded by native gardens – the complete opposite to inner-city Melbourne life,” explains Albert. “The external palette is very pared-back. As you journey into the house, new textures and materials are revealed. We did this to purposefully amplify the feeling of discovering something.” BUILDING CHARACTER Inside the home, stone, bricks and raw materials reign supreme, with a carefully curated selection of art and furniture chosen to inject warmth, colour and comfort into the interiors. “This selection was dictated by what artists and suppliers we could find locally, plus there are some iconic pieces as well, like the Togo sofa from Ligne Roset,” says Albert. “Light touches of timber, such as the joinery, the door and window frames, further work to soften the space. We hope the kids will reminisce about their summer holidays spent under the concrete pyramids – their giant tents. The planning of the house facilitates shared experiences like eating together and sitting by the fire, and visiting the beach. We want this home to last forever.” R Set in stone Like the living space, the dining space ceiling features the reverse step concrete detailing. A Gubi pendant light hangs over a Grazia & Co dining table and Domo chairs, with a metal artwork by Emma Davies titled Canopy standing sentinel over it all. “The piece is made up of 48,000 fingerprints, reclaimed bird net and bailing twine, and it resembles the snowgum bark, bringing the outside in,” says Albert. The open-plan kitchen and dining join to the outdoor entertaining area. A

Local flavour The kitchen island is constructed from masonry blocks, Hamlet bricks and timber, with a concrete benchtop and Brodware tapware. The cabinetry was built by ESAR Joinery and ties in nicely with the exposed Victorian ash battens. Bar stools, Grazia & Co. Water works A copper Brodware ‘Yokato’ outdoor shower ensures sand and salt water is washed away before entering the house. Austral Masonry ‘GB Honed’ blocks were used for the walls, with Hamlet Bowral bricks, also from Austral, for the flooring and bench seat. Going native The indoor/outdoor connection (opposite) is facilitated by folding doors that open up entirely to the garden, which features native Australian plantings endemic to the area. The pavers, steps, retaining wall and frustrum roofs are all crafted from Austral Bricks and Austral Masonry blocks. Curved bench and side table, Grazia & Co. A

A Togo settee from Domo can be spotted through the door, with cabinetry by ESAR Joinery visible beyond. How to layer materials and textures
1
Define your hero material and ensure everything else is secondary to it. This approach will promote visual harmony.
2
Incorporate natural, new and engineered textures into your materials palette, to add interest, depth and contrast to your aesthetic.
3
Balance hard materials such as stone, brick and concrete with softer materials, like timber, leather and linen.
4
Choose a colour range for your home and select materials that fall within that colour family, to achieve cohesion quickly.
Rest and rejuvenation Polished concrete floors and more masonry bricks line the bathroom, where a Polilife ‘Drum’ bath from First Choice Warehouse takes pride of place. Tapware, Brodware. Get a grip Everything down to the door handles was planned with care and reflects concrete detailing seen in other parts of the home. Beauty sleep Simple yet tactile, the main bedroom (opposite) showcases Red Charm Peony & Daffodils, an artwork by Sam Michelle, above the bed – an inclusion that has informed the soft furnishings. Headboard and bench, Jardan. Pendant light, Porcelain Bear. A

Golden hour Soothing and pleasant to the eye, this home repeatedly uses the same materials in every room. In the bathroom, Hamlet brick flooring is paired with Artedomus wall tiles and a custom-built vanity also made from bricks. A mirrored wall reflects light and creates the illusion of space, while Brodware tapware, a stone basin and a Porcelain Bear pendant light are unexpected luxurious touches that elevate the whole space. Louvred windows provide passive cooling and airflow.

THIS IS WHERE AMANDA LIVES LIVED Over 49,000 Australian women experience homelessness on any given day. And it’s getting worse.
Most of them are invisible because they are couch surfing, sleeping in cars or tents, or staying with friends and family. Worse still, many women and children return to family violence because they have nowhere else to go. We need $7.6 billion in government funding to address this crisis. who lives here? A young family of four, with school-aged children (and one cat), who engaged Studio Martin to build their dream home. studiomartin.com.au | @studiomartin_
ON A SUBURBAN STREET in south-east Melbourne is a handsome house with precise angles and tactile façade. Created by architect Lauren Martin and interior designer Amanda Martin of design practice Studio Martin, this property is home to a young family of four. “Our clients grew up in south-east Melbourne and were keen to raise their kids in the same area for that sense of community, local shops, ovals, and parks,” says Lauren. “They wanted a warm but minimalist environment, a retreat from their day-to-day lives.” At the top of the wish list was a timeless aesthetic that wouldn’t date for the exterior and a fresh interior scheme. The home needed to have plenty of storage and ample amenities, but be low-maintenance. Structurally, the clients wanted a double garage, at least four bedrooms and an open-plan living environment. Studio Martin began the project in January 2019, with careful consideration given to spatial planning and natural sun light. “With a north-facing street frontage, orientation was a primary consideration,” says Lauren. “Skylights and windows were carefully placed to bring northern light into the home, particularly the main living area at the back of the site.” Timber and concrete were key materials for both interior and exterior schemes, and the ground floor was designed to feel like a series of open spaces that flow into one another. The stairs to the upper level became a bold architectural feature. Upstairs, the bedrooms each feel like secluded sanctuaries, filled with soft light and rich colours. The build was completed in June 2021. “As the project was budget conscious, we implemented a modest palette throughout the home. The client wanted a muted and natural scheme and to introduce colour via art and selected furnishings,” says Amanda. Priority was given to textured furnishings with a soft appearance to add depth and warmth to the sleek scheme. “Our furniture selection is a mix of neutrals with pops of colour or bold elements like interesting chairs, graphic rugs and lights, but at the same time the furniture selection had to be practical and robust as the clients have a growing family,” says Amanda. Into the woods Find this treehouse and many more in Treetop Hideaways: Treehouses For Adults, by Philip Jodidio, $90, Rizzoli International.
EMERGING FROM THE HILLSIDE like a graceful extension of its natural surroundings, this stunning off-the-grid half-treehouse can be found 100 kilometres north of Manhattan in New York. JacobsChang Architecture was tasked with planning the 33-square-metre dwelling keeping two challenges in mind – one, that it would be built by the owners/amateur builders; and, two, to complete the build on a shoestring budget. JacobsChang rose to the occasion and, impressively, the final spend came in at under $30,000. Simple concrete footings anchor the home to the earth at one end, while at the other end, the cabin’s timber frame is supported by Garnier Limbs, an anchoring system that consists of metal bolted into the trees. The interior was kept simple with panelled shiplap walls and ceilings painted white, and the natural timber flooring was coated in a clear matt sealant. As the cabin has no access to electricity for heating or cooling, the clever design includes three magnificent floor-to-ceiling steel tube windows that can be opened and closed at the occupant’s discretion, allowing natural cross-ventilation breezes to flow freely in summer or closed to the elements in winter. R All seasons Built to weather the rain, hail and shine of upstate New York, the treehouse was constructed with eastern pine sourced from the 24-hectare property. The exterior was finished with Swedish pine tar. Life’s a breeze Vast operable windows (opposite) are made for off-the-grid living.

BAY LEAF CUSTARD TART Serves 8
I love custard in all its glorious forms, but nothing quite beats a classic custard tart. Infusing the cream with a few fresh bay leaves transforms this into something quite fragrant and almost tea-like. Bay leaves are an ingredient that tends to get thrown into a stew or soup without knowing what it actually tastes like. It’s not necessarily a flavour a lot of people could identify on its own. But here, woven into the silky custard, it sings. Fresh bay is a must here to really get the best flavour.
Add the flour, icing sugar, salt and butter to the bowl of a food processor and pulse until you have fine breadcrumbs. (If making by hand, rub the butter into the flour until fine.) Add the egg yolk and a tablespoon of ice-cold water and pulse until it starts to clump, adding more water, a tablespoon at a time, if needed. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and pat it into a thick disc. Wrap it in plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator for 1 hour, or until well chilled and firm. 2 Meanwhile, make the custard. Add the milk, cream and bay leaves to a small saucepan and heat gently until steaming, just before the boil. Remove from the heat, cover and let the cream infuse for 30 minutes-1 hour. 3 Preheat the oven to 190°C. 4 Lightly dust your work surface with flour and roll out the pastry to 3-4mm thick. Line a 20cm tart pan or loose-bottomed cake pan with the pastry, making sure to press the pastry evenly into the edges and leaving an overhang of pastry around the rim. Prick the base of the pastry a few times with a fork, then pop it in the freezer for 15 minutes. Once chilled, use a small, sharp knife to trim off the overhanging pastry to give a neat crust. Scrunch up a piece of baking paper, open it out again and use it to line the inside of the tart. Fill with baking beans or uncooked rice and blind bake for 20 minutes. Carefully remove the baking beans and paper and continue to bake for another 15-22 minutes, until the edges have browned and the base is firm to the touch. Brush the base with a little bit of the egg white and put back in the oven for 2 minutes – this will help create a seal for the custard. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Reduce the oven temperature to 150°C. 5 To finish custard, in a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks and sugar together until combined. Strain the bay leaves from the saucepan and return the cream to the pan. Gently bring to the boil. Pour the hot cream into the egg mixture, whisking to combine, then pass the custard through a fine sieve to catch any little lumps. 6 Pour half of the custard into the pastry shell and skim off and discard any foam on the top. Place the tart on a baking sheet and into the oven. Pour in the rest of the custard and bake for 30–40 minutes until just set with a jelly-like wobble in the middle. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely. Serve at room temperature or chilled. 1

FLOURLESS CHOCOLATE, OLIVE OIL & ALMOND CAKE (pictured previous page) CAKE 75g dark chocolate 250g caster sugar 150ml extra-virgin olive oil 3 eggs 175g ground almonds 90g cocoa powder ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda ½ tsp salt 150ml hot water GANACHE 175g dark chocolate, plus extra chocolate shavings to decorate 220ml double cream
Serves 12-16 Flourless chocolate cakes can often lean into a deeply fudgy, almost sticky texture, but this version still retains a bit of a cakey crumb that stays eternally moist thanks to all the ground almonds. It makes for a good celebration cake or something to serve after a cosy dinner party when only chocolate on chocolate on chocolate will do. Serve with a good splash of cold cream.
CAKE 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 20cm cake pan. 2 Melt the chocolate in short bursts in the microwave or in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Set aside to cool. In a large bowl, whisk together the sugar and oil. Add the eggs and beat until smooth, then mix in the melted chocolate. In a separate bowl, mix together the ground almonds, cocoa powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Stir this mixture into the wet ingredients until fully combined. Pour in the hot water and give it a good stir before pouring the batter into the cake pan. 3 Bake for 40-50 minutes until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely in the pan. GANACHE 4 Finely chop the chocolate and place it in a bowl. Heat the cream in a small saucepan until steaming, just before it comes to the boil. Pour the cream onto the chocolate and let it sit undisturbed for 30 seconds. Start stirring slowly from the middle, working your way outwards until you have a smooth ganache. If there are still a few unmelted lumps, place the bowl over a pan of simmering water and stir until everything is melted. Place the cooled cake on a wire rack set over a baking tray or a sheet of baking paper. Pour the ganache over the cake, letting it drip down the sides. Use a palette knife to ease the ganache over any uncovered areas. Leave the cake to set for 30 minutes before covering in some chocolate shavings. R

UPON ARRIVING AT HISTORIC Osborn House, guests are greeted with elegance reminiscent of a grand Oxfordshire country home. Originally known as The Knoll, the home was built in 1892 by local resident George Osborn for his family. Fast-forward to the 2020s and a group of investors led by entrepreneur Adam Abrahams had a vision for the estate – to turn it into a luxury boutique hotel not often found in Australia. London-based interior designer Linda Boronkay was enlisted, along with interior architect Alan McMahon of Sydney’s Mac Design Studio, to transform the estate into a world-class destination. Osborn House now offers 22 rooms, an ultra-luxe spa and a 25-metre lap pool, all surrounded by lush, established gardens. Guests can dine at Dinah’s restaurant or George’s bar, both named after the original occupants of the estate (Dinah was George’s wife). True luxury, however, is found in the details: the rooms feature velvet lounges, marble tables and oak furniture. “The combination of reclaimed materials paired with rich and tactile fabrics, curated objects from around Europe and personal touches in different spaces will make you feel like you are being embraced by an interesting individual,” says Linda. While displaying a heavy European influence, the hotel also showcases contemporary Australian art, with original works by Byron Bay artist Jai Vasicek. With its proximity to local vineyards, historic Bundanoon village and Morton National Park, there’s a plethora of adventuring options nearby for holiday-makers coming from near and far. But if guests choose, there’s no need to leave the grounds at all. In the words of Osborn House general manager Adrian Levy, “Osborn House really does manifest its own time and place in the world, making it a truly special offering in Australia.” R

full stop Let’s play a game with interdisciplinary designer, Brahman Perera. A few words from real living and he fills in the rest… COLOUR SHOULD ALWAYS... BE DARING. IT’S EXPRESSIVE AND HAS THE CAPACITY TO COMPLETELY TRANSFORM A SPACE. NATURE IS A CONSTANT SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR ME. TO ME, FASHION IS... PERSONAL ARCHITECTURE. IT’S AN INCREDIBLE WAY TO EXPRESS FEELINGS AND REFLECT A PERSONAL BRAND. COMPOSING AN INTERIOR IS MUCH LIKE GETTING DRESSED – A BASE STRUCTURE LAYERED WITH ELEMENTS AND EMBELLISHED. THE PERFECT RESTAURANT... EMBODIES HOSPITALITY IN THE TRUEST SENSE OF THE WORD. IT WELCOMES YOU, ADDRESSES YOUR EMOTIONS AND ANTICIPATES YOUR NEEDS. WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE THAT, IT STAYS WITH YOU. WHEN I WANT TO RELAX, I... PARTICIPATE IN SENSORY RITUALS SUCH AS COOKING, BATHING AND SPENDING TIME IN NATURE.
I LOVE TO COLLECT... USEFUL PIECES THAT HAVE A STORY TO TELL. I HAVE SOME WONDERFUL PLATES I LIKE TO USE WHEN HOSTING DINNER PARTIES. THEY’RE ALWAYS A TALKING POINT WITH MY GUESTS. I’M ALSO AN AVID RECORD COLLECTOR. PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT I... AM OBSESSED WITH 1980S AND ’90S POP MUSIC. THINK CELINE, MARIAH AND TINA. OR, PERHAPS PEOPLE ALREADY KNOW THIS! A WELL-DESIGNED ROOM... IS A LAYERED LANDSCAPE. EVERY CORNER IS CONSIDERED SO THE SPACE IS USED THOUGHTFULLY AND TO ITS FULL POTENTIAL. THE SOUNDTRACK TO MY LIFE IS... AN ECLECTIC COLLECTION OF MUSIC CURATED BY FILM DIRECTOR LUCA GUADAGNINO. MUSIC ALWAYS PLAYS AN EMOTIVE ROLE IN HIS FILMS, OFTEN AS A CHARACTER IN ITS OWN RIGHT. MY HUSBAND’S MUSICAL BACKGROUND MEANS MY DAILY RITUALS ARE SCORED BY PIANO MELODIES OR OUR FAVOURITE JAZZ AND CLASSICAL RECORDS. R
