FIRST DATE’S MAÎTRE D’ FRED SIRIEIX What makes a good romantic gesture for Valentines Day? It completely depends on the person. Ask questions before the day, then choose a gift tailored to them. Or, for more spontaneity, go crazy and make a night of it. Book a hotel, tell them to pack an overnight bag, and go – it’s about creating special memories after all. I like to build excitement leading up
Romantic recipe
Berry heart pie 1 Melt 20g butter then add 500g frozen summer fruits, 100g caster sugar, 1 split vanilla pod, 1 tbsp cornflower and 2 tbsp water. 2 Bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour into an ovenproof dish. 3 Roll out 375g ready rolled shortcrust pastry. Use a heart-shaped cutter to cut out 10 large hearts and 10 small. Brush with egg and place the small hearts on top of the large ones. 4 Arrange over the berries and bake in a preheated 170˚C oven for 20 mins. Dust with icing sugar and serve with double cream.

to the occasion – let your partner know two weeks in advance you’re going away, then every few days add to the plan. Do you have a signature dish if you were staying in? I would make something really simple, so I could spend as little time in the kitchen as possible! Perhaps lobster: slice in half, spread with salty, French butter, sprinkle with parsley and cook in the oven, then serve with a good bottle of wine. Where is your favourite restaurant for a date? Beast, near London’s Oxford Street has everything – from quality of food to great hospitality. Long bench seating means you can interact with others, or keep it intimate. What makes Valentine’s Day so special in the First Dates restaurant? The anticipation that this might be your chance to find the one worth spending it with. The place is like Christmas – they know there will be gifts, but what’s inside is a mystery.

hy do you think that staying in is the new going out? After the more obvious reasons, such as a lack of cash and energy, access to creature comforts is one of the main motivations. It’s not just a generational thing, either – more than half of millennials are going out less, compared to the national average of 40 per cent. So we’re starting to see the emergence of a new trend for ‘big nights in’ at home. What’s hot at the moment in the world of furniture? From sofas to upholstered headboards, we’ve seen a 355 per cent increase in velvet coverings in the past year. A more mix-and-match approach to furnishing your home is also on the rise, with customers buying from different sofa and armchair collections in the same order.

‘ I wanted to create a hideaway ’ Set in a quaint Cornish hamlet, Sarah Stanley’s bespoke two-bedroom cabin provides an oasis of calm with an Antipodean feel Words NATALIE OSBORN Photographer COLIN POOLE
Living area ‘While it’s a really light-illed space during the day, I planned layers of subtle lighting so that after dark it feels cosy and cocooning,’ Sarah says. Industrial-style wall lighting provides a softening base, accented by candlelight and the glowing logburner in the heart of the room

hen Sarah Stanley and her partner Andy got the keys to a higgledy-piggledy cottage just a short stroll from the Cornish coastline, it was the expansive garden plot that captured their imagination. ‘We wanted to build something that would be very different from our home, but still feel in-keeping with the surrounding hamlet,’ recalls Sarah. ‘It needed to be somewhere that could be rented out as a holiday let, but also a bolthole for us, too. Our house is adjacent to my office, whereas The Cotton Tree is around a 20-minute drive away; so heading there for a weekend allows me to leave work behind.’ Sarah lived in Australia while her three now grown-up children were toddlers, so she took a lot of inspiration for the design from the country’s Queenslander-style
Dining area A large cable drum topped with a glass top makes the perfect small-space dining table for the open-plan living area of The Cotton Tree. French doors lead out to the veranda, which wraps around the cabin

Kitchen Sitting in an L-shape, the kitchen doesn’t impose into the living area and rather acts as a stunning showcase of bespoke furniture, from the timber cladding to the grey-washed cabinetry, that doubles as a workspace. ‘I actually found the doors for the top cupboard at a reclamation yard for just £40,’ says Sarah. ‘They’ve turned out to be a real feature.’ 54 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019

properties, with their large wrap-around verandas, corrugated iron roofs and sleek timber cladding. ‘I wanted to encourage more indoor/outdoor living, which is typical of the Antipodean way of life, although obviously we’re not as blessed with sunshine in this country as Australia is!’ she says. Painted crisp white and with a simple geometric design, its quiet style continues inside. ‘We wanted the interior to feel very calm – a space that was pared-back and relaxing to be in, yet equally cosy in winter.’ An Esse Lionheart woodburner is the central point to the open-plan kitchen-living-dining area, which soars through the double-height space and draws the eye up to the large picture window that steals a slice of the Cornish sky. An exposed stud wall creates display nooks for vintage trinkets, as well as disguising the TV behind clad doors. ‘Building from scratch meant we could incorporate these little details that make all the diference, including underloor heating, so we didn’t have to worry about radiators and could really free the layout up. ‘I wanted to create light-filled spaces with a bohemian edge,’ Sarah continues. ‘Natural linens sit well alongside reclaimed wood and nautical-inspired finds that reflect the seaside location.’ The kitchen is undoubtedly one of the showpieces of the design,
EASY PROJECT Create a sense of cohesion in your kitchen by matching your worktop to your shelving. For a similar effect to quartz, look at Ikea’s Lack designs, which can even be wrapped with adhesive vinyl (see B&Q) to match marble surfaces. Try to match the thickness of the worktop for a streamlined effect

featuring yet more wood – but with a washed grey tone that complements the warmer wall cladding. ‘I opted from reclaimed doors with a simple quartz worktop for a timeless look that’s also hardwearing,’ she explains. Sarah’s carpenters had their work cut out, as in the main bedroom she called on their skills yet again. ‘he bed base is made from reclaimed wood and then we used bamboo to create a simple headboard, which I draped with fine linen.’ A vintage sliding door is a chic space-saving addition and reveals a wall of storage, stopping short of the ceiling to create a feature ledge. In the bathroom, geometric tiles travel from floor to ceiling, and frame two traditional-style showers. ‘My thinking behind this room was that we needed somewhere to relax in after a day
Bedroom Texture comes to the fore with draped linens, woven cushions and a macramé wall hanging. ‘We opted for one striking piece of artwork so as not to clutter the space,’ says Sarah. Vintage lobster pots and buoys add visual interest
Hide roller blinds Conceal the functionality of a roller blind with draped fabric. Recreate Sarah’s look using a length of bamboo as a curtain rail, then hand-stitch ties onto linen squares before tying to the bamboo. Affording an informal look and feel, the linen is purely decorative.

Roll-top bath Instead of mounting the taps onto the timber-clad wall of the bathroom, which could get wet and rot, Sarah savvily chose to it her taps to the inside of the bath instead Reclaimed finds Continuing the rustic nautical theme, a weathered porthole has been transformed into a vanity mirror, above a butler-style basin
‘After a day of stomping the coastal path, this bathroom is such a relaxing, indulgent space’ 58 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019
Bathroom Making the most of the large space, two vintage-style showers offer pared-back luxury, and clever use on one wall of geometric monochrome tiling from Mandarin Stone seamlessly lows into the looring for a wet-room effect of stomping the coastal path,’ she says. ‘The bath was a reclamation yard find, which we had re-enamelled, and pairs really well with the high-level toilet cistern and vintage taps. The cabinet in here was made on site by our very hard-working carpenters.’ After a two-year build, Sarah has one piece of advice to share with homeowners eyeing up their garden for a hideaway of their own: ‘Work with a team who understand that certain features will evolve as the build progresses,’ she says. ‘While the essence of the cabin didn’t migrate too broadly from the original design, lots of the finer details did. But I’m glad I made those tweaks, as I’m so happy with how it’s turned out. Saying that, more kitchen storage would be handy!’

he moment she stepped into the house that was to become her family’s home, Michelle Dawson felt a positive vibe. ‘I stood in the hallway and peeked into the front room,’ she recalls. ‘The daylight flooding through the bay window was incredible, and I knew immediately this was a special house.’ Michelle and her husband Nick had been raising a family and working their way up the property ladder over several years, and were renting in Kingston upon Thames while they searched for their next project. ‘This time we wanted a place that needed
complete refurbishment, where we could make our mark and build a home,’ she says. The property that had charmed Michelle was detached, spacious, and had potential to extend, but on the downside, the interior was damp in places, with an old-fashioned layout and worn, dated décor – but none of that put the couple off. They moved in with their two small sons, Hugo and Solomon, spending the next two years getting to know the house and planning a top-down transformation. ‘Everything was a bit tatty, but it didn’t matter,’ Michelle explains. ‘The boys could tear about as much as they wanted, and we got a really good understanding of the space.’
Living room Neutral walls and loors with a ireplace and shelving painted in navy offer the perfect backdrop for Michelle’s colourful inds, including this plush pink Designers Guild rug While Nick concentrated on the build, Michelle focused on the interior. By then she was expecting their third child, and aiming to create a beautiful and practical home to suit a growing family. With plans in place, Michelle, Nick and their boys moved out temporarily and the builders moved in. Over several months, the small back kitchen and snug were knocked through and an extension built on FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 67

Kitchen In the very heart of the open-plan living space, the built-in island bench gets plenty of use by the children, as well as guests as Michelle cooks. Teardrop copper pendant lights from Dusk Lighting accentuate the ceiling height, and the low-key German kitchen cabinetry, sourced locally from Dufont Faes, have a gloss worksurface to relect the light. ‘The island is pale grey, but for contrast, I chose navy for the wall units,’ explains Michelle. ‘I think it’s softer than black or charcoal grey.’

Dining area The generous dining table from Made.com is positioned to maximise the views out to the garden, and can be extended to seat 10. The sleek, contemporary style sits well with the understated, high-gloss kitchen, and classic Eames chairs from John Lewis & Partners make a bright statement two sides, forming a substantial, family-oriented kitchen and living zone, with double doors linking it to the more formal living room at the front of the house. Upstairs the space was remodelled into a large bathroom and four bedrooms and on the second loor, a master suite was created from the loft space. Although off-site, Michelle and Nick were involved in the renovation from start to finish. Both visited every day to monitor progress and answer any questions, while their evenings were spent planning and researching anything from lights to kitchen appliances and furniture. ‘It was all-consuming, and took a lot of energy, especially with two young children,’ admits Michelle. ‘The minute the boys were in bed, we’d start discussing the house. We really enjoyed the whole experience, but it did take over our lives!’
Design detail A hanging wicker chair from Decorelo is an irresistible inishing touch for the kitchen’s overhead steel beam, which has been incorporated into the open-plan design rather than attempting to disguise it. Painted dark grey, the structural supports add architectural interest and help zone the space
FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 69
‘Feature walls are a great way to inject colour and visual impact without it being too obtrusive’ Within a year, the couple had moved back in, their new son Rafferty had arrived, and the house had been transformed. At its heart, the stunning open-plan kitchen-cum-living room features overhead rooflights and a run of bi-folding doors, which flood the space with light. Hefty steel supports add contemporary, loft-style appeal and help designate the diferent zones, and there is plenty of seating and space to cook and entertain. ‘We often have friends round,’ says Michelle. ‘Where I grew up, everyone’s door was always open, and I love making people feel welcome in our home.’ Michelle’s passion for colour is evident throughout; most walls and floors have been kept neutral, then layered with splashes of teal , pink, yellow and green, so the overall effect is fresh, fun and vibrant. ‘I wear bright clothes every day and there’s virtually nothing black or grey in my entire wardrobe,’ she says. ‘It’s the same when it comes to the house – I just go for colours I love and it all seems to work together.’ Alongside colour, Michelle has added interest and personality with plenty of texture and pattern. A pop of shimmering turquoise and gold wallpaper gives the couple’s bedroom instant glamour, while the bathroom’s exposed original brickwork shows off the property’s 70 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019

Take this Ikea wardrobe coniguration, for example; by placing two tall units either side of a blanket box, a display nook has been formed, which could even be used as a seat
Boys’ bedroom Exposed brick walls, which have been sealed to prevent dust, give the boys’ vibrant room a robust, pared-back feel, with bright orange Ikea storage units maximising space. The grey sofa is from Next, and Michelle sourced the twin beds from eBay Main bedroom Metallic peacock feather-motif wallpaper by Matthew Williamson makes a stunning backdrop to the velvet sleigh bed from Carpetright. The loor-to-ceiling window ills the loft suite with light, and an upholstered footstool from Made.com and a deep-pile faux-fur rug add a luxurious touch

Bathroom Rustic exposed brick gives the space character, while patterned tiles from Walls and Floors lift the simple white and grey scheme. A bath and twin basins from VictoriaPlum.com are a practical choice for the young family
age and history. Meanwhile, the space between the kitchen and formal living room has been turned from a walk-through to a striking yet cosy spot for reading, thanks to a bold, library-print wallpaper. Michelle’s distinctive palette and relaxed, eclectic taste extend to the furniture choices, too. A savvy shopper, she often picks up discounted designer pieces and mixes them with high-street buys. Her local auction house is another favourite source of interesting one-offs. ‘I like contrast and a real mix

of styles, and I can’t resist the challenge of finding something with real impact that’s not too expensive,’ she says. ‘I’ll pick out timeless items that we’ll keep long-term, and I have to have a few fun touches, too.’ This renovation was Michelle and Nick’s most ambitious so far, and while not ruling out another move, Michelle is happy for now to enjoy the results of their hard work. ‘I’m definitely more confident with style choices now, and our home feels relaxed and fun,’ says Michelle. ‘We love spending time here.’

elocating to Warwickshire was more accident than design for Alex and Paul Clarke. Having moved from London and smarting from missing out on a Sussex house, the pair put plans to set up a new lifestyle-led estate agency firm on hold and headed to Alex’s parents to take stock. ‘I grew up around here,’ she explains. ‘It felt like the natural thing to do.’ Gradually, the idea of remaining close to her family took root and the couple began to look at the local property market with increasing interest – and in the midst of a cluster of farm buildings at the edge of a tiny hamlet, they found their new home… It was one half of a brick and tile farmhouse, originally a pair of cottages, with an odd layout and dated interior but a glorious setting. ‘It had been on the market for quite a long time,’ recalls Paul. ‘I think people were wary of the Grade II-listing, and also they were selling three plots at the time. It needed all three purchasers to fall into line.’
House details Dating from the 1600s, the Grade II-listed Warwickshire property was originally two farmworkers’ cottages, now combined and extended to form a single four-bedroom family home Facts & igures The property cost £415,000 in 2015 and has a current value of £825,000

‘We ind gems in reclamation yards and antiques shops - everything in this house has a story’ Suddenly, their plans began to come together. ‘We bought this house, still wondering where we might end up and then set up the business,’ says Alex. Any risk of taking on a period house scarcely ruffled them. ‘Everyone was asking whether the beams were OK or whether there was woodworm or rot,’ says Alex. ‘We thought, well, it’s been standing for hundreds of years – it’s going to be alright.’ Even so, making sense of the floorplan was a challenge. The property’s past life meant there were two front doors, one bathroom dividing the ground floor, with another above, its own two doors opening onto one bedroom. There was also an odd staircase that began in the kitchen and led nowhere. ‘The builder said it would be simpler to just strip it back and start again,’ Alex says. Plans hatched, they set about reworking and reinvigorating the space by opening up the kitchen with a simple run of cobalt-blue cabinets, adding a new storm porch to make a proper entrance,
Kitchen In an open-plan space, one strong accent colour will deine a key area. Painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue and topped with quartz work surfaces, the British Standard cabinets provide a bold backdrop. Kitchen Stripped of their varnish, the original plank and batten doors add to the rustic style. Alex has teamed this one with a sheer curtain from Anthropologie to soften the look redesigning the upper floor to define the bedrooms and bathroom, and landscaping the garden. Local contacts paid off. The team of builders shared the couple’s love of period buildings and enjoyed their willingness to be imaginative and take design risks. For instance, pendant lights loop from the ceilings on long flex – ‘so we can easily move the lighting around if we need to in future,’ Alex points out – and one bedroom window is now framed by bare pink plaster. Their much-admired rough-cast kitchen floor was a happy accident. ‘It is just what was underneath when we ripped up the old lino,’ says Paul. ‘The companies who poured concrete said the levels are so wonky it would be an absolute disaster, so it’s just stripped back with rugs on top. You can see the old bitumen and patches of screed. Without fail, everyone who visits here asks us where we got the floor from!’ Downstairs, hidden beams have been uncovered and others sandblasted clean to remove decades of 80 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019
Laundry room A pair of gorgeous period shutters from The Barn Antique Centre, chipped and sun-faded from their original bright peacock blue, frame the entrance to the utility room. Hidden from sight, the washing machine and tumble dryer are tucked behind gathered panels of coarse French linen – a practical and visually appealing rustic touch
Dining area The French farmhouse table and chapel chairs came from London’s Columbia Road market, and the couple bought the skin underneath in Amsterdam and carried it home on their light. Layers of linoleum were lifted to reveal the colours and textures of the bitumen-patched loor beneath, and new glazed doors open onto the garden

Bathroom Mixing old with new is key to the Clarkes’ style. Here, the contemporary bath is a bold contrast with the basin set into a vintage pine table: ‘It’s from Alex’s grandfather’s house and it’s perfect,’ adds Paul. The bathroom’s ceiling was also opened up to its full height to increase the sense of space
Guest bedroom Brick and bare plaster is softened by the cosy texture of an old blanket. The bed base was made from a discarded pallet and its headboard is a salvaged gilt picture frame black paint. Upstairs, taking down two false ceilings in the biggest of the three bedrooms has liberated the space and made it feel lighter and more open. Walls are all in the palest of grey-whites, a clear backdrop to their eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary furniture. ‘A lot has come from reclamation yards and antiques shops,’ says Paul. ‘I like that they have stories.’ There was no grand plan, Alex says. ‘We find things that we love, knowing that wherever we put them, they will fit. Our flat in London was modern, with a white high-gloss kitchen, but the table suited it. If you love something, it will always work.’ She has faith in instinct
THE BIG IDEA Like Alex and Paul, get creative with exposed brick walls for a softer twist on the industrial look. Ask your plasterer to curve around just one section (choosing brickwork that is the most intact or is in a key area of the room) to form a stylish keyhole feature
and acting fast: blink and you miss it. ‘Alex is so organised and methodical,’ says Paul, ‘but when it comes to buying stuff for the house, she makes quick decisions.’ The essence of it all is simplicity and purpose: light-filtering linen at the windows, soft leather seating, weathered woods, earthy woollen rugs to lend warmth and utilitarian accessories. All work was completed in time for a christening party for their daughter Theodora. ‘It was low-key, but lovely,’ says Paul, ‘Afterwards, we had a big barbecue with trestle tables in our garden. We see more of our family and friends now than we ever did, and I don’t know if we would have that from another house. In our business we probably should be advising people to move house all the time, but when you find somewhere you love, you want to stay.’ FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 83

ollowing five years living in California, with plans to move their expanding family back to London, Emma and Tom Morris knew that they wanted to find somewhere comparable to the light and bright home they’d left behind in San Francisco. ‘We had lived in a very open-plan house there, and had spent a lot of time outside, so we wanted to recapture this feeling in a new place,’ recalls Emma. With luck on their side, the couple found their dream house in the desirable De Beauvoir area of London, with just enough time to renovate before the birth of their second child – and with the added bonus of not having to live there while the dust and dirt was being created by the work. On the irst viewing, they were drawn to the beautiful living room with its French windows, flanked by impressive shutters, which look out onto the street and garden. Although the house is listed so a layout change would prove difficult, and it was nicely decorated but not to the couple’s taste, they both knew it was right for their growing family. ‘After seeing so many properties, for the first time this felt like a forever home for us – and one where we could really make our mark.’ Emma and Tom could instantly visualise how they could introduce an essence of Californian style through the open-plan space on the ground floor, with the kitchen, dining room and conservatory all leading FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 93

This led me to start exploring green as a basis for the scheme.’ The couple had used a lot of greys and blues in their previous homes, but wanted something different for

this house. The kitchen felt like the darkest area of the ground floor and was starved of natural light, so it was the first on the renovations list. Emma approached deVOL to design the kitchen and opted for a bespoke green hue for the cabinets for a fresh, inviting feel. Light fittings, tiles and stools from the same company were too beautiful to resist, and so Emma’s job was made easy on that front. One of her favourite things in the kitchen is the copper breakfast bar – and all the marks inflicted from daily wear and tear simply adds to its character. The pink tiles from Floors of Stone were Emma’s biggest gamble, but look stunning against the green walls. ‘The kitchen was the big investment in the renovations, but we knew how FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 95

much time we would spend in here, and we love it.’ The green theme continues through to the dining room and snug, using three shades of Farrow & Ball paint to create a coherent space that flows. Artwork bought by Tom for Emma’s 30th birthday provides a vivid pop of colour against one of the dark green walls. Decorating the living area – the room that made Emma and Tom first fall in love with the house – was somehow the most difficult, however. ‘The windows and high ceilings are so impressive that you could almost do nothing with it, and it would still look stunning – which strangely is what I struggled with,’ Emma explains. ‘Anything

we added to the room needed to do those beautiful elements justice.’ However, it was their amazing furniture finds bought from antiques markets in San Francisco that finally gave the couple the steer, resulting in a sophisticated, grown-up space. A television-free zone, this room is now a place for contemplation and relaxation. ‘The previous owners had a lot of books so we decided to keep the bookshelves, and one day –when we don’t have two tiny ones to run around after – I’d like to buy more books to fill them,’ she says. Emma was tempted to paint the room a moody, dark colour but, in the end, decided on a neutral shade of blush to enable the huge
hero windows to take centre stage. In fact, choosing the paint colour proved to be so hard that she put it to the vote, and her mum and sister made the inal decision: China Clay by Little Greene. A statement mustard Chesterfield doubles as a sofa bed for guests, and to the couple’s delight, they can still shop at the London branch of their much-loved US interiors shop, West Elm, having bought lights and rugs from there over the years. Completing the renovation, Tom was given free rein to create a minimalist upstairs bathroom with natural wood finishes against a backdrop of charcoal walls and metro tiles. contrast features marble accents and petrol hues for an opulent feel. The children’s bedrooms were inspired by quilts made by their grandmother when they were born, which Emma has teamed with whimsical Donna Wilson prints and a joyful yellow decorating scheme. ‘Looking back, I think the rooms in the house that have been the most successful are the ones where we weren’t afraid to just go for it, like in the kitchen,’ Emma reflects. ‘This project has taught me to trust my gut, feel the fear and then do it anyway – I really am so proud of what we’ve created here.’

‘WE MANAGED TO UPSTYLE ON A BUDGET’ Roxy Hepworth transformed her dark kitchen into a chic and airy family space without breaking the bank Feature SALLY SMITH Photographer RACHEL SMITH
Bespoke design Cabinets in luxurious Little Greene Basalt and white form an effective contrast in this classic scheme
WHY DID YOU DISLIKE YOUR OLD KITCHEN? It was small and dingy, with a galley layout and a bodged side-return extension. There was simply no space! HOW DID YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE ROOM? A light-filled kitchen-diner that made the most of the sun at the back of the house was our aim. I really wanted an architecturally interesting extension, with plenty of glass panels, not just standard skylights. WHAT WERE YOUR MUST-HAVES? A dining and seating area. There was limited space, but we weren’t going to compromise on a place to sit and eat as a family. WERE THERE ANY DISASTERS ALONG THE WAY? The project was meant to take three months, but it took
nearly 10. Unfortunately, we had terrible builders working for us – my husband James had to ask them to leave! WHAT WAS THE BEST BARGAIN YOU FOUND? We thought we would have to invest in a pricey kitchen in order to get the finish we wanted. Luckily, James and I managed to find the same Shaker-style doors with a less expensive brand. We upstyled the cabinetry by custom-spraying the doors and adding brass handles to give it a gorgeous high-end look at half the price. DID ANYTHING COST MORE THAN EXPECTED? I’d budgeted around £100 for a gold three-way tap. I got a bit of a shock though when I found out it was going to be £1,200! In the end, I had to settle for a chrome one I found in a sale for £500. I wouldn’t be without it now though. FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 113

The only upside of the build taking so long is that we had more pay cheques to cover any extra costs that came up! 3 HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW IT’S ALL FINISHED? As the space is so sunny during the day, I now have a new-found love of baking – something I never wanted to do in the old kitchen. The window seat in the corner was a great idea. In the summer, we sit on the bench, read and eat breakfast as a family at the weekends. We’re delighted with what we’ve created.

‘THE RECYCLED ELEMENTS ADD CHARACTER’ By taking DIY to the next level, Chloe Stickland has created a unique kitchen in her Hampshire bungalow Feature KAREN WILSON Photographer FIONA WALKER-ARNOTT
WHAT DID YOU DISLIKE ABOUT YOUR OLD KITCHEN? When we bought our house, it was pretty derelict. The kitchen was in another room and consisted of a few old cabinets on one wall. It was far too small, so we knew we’d have to relocate it. HOW DID YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE SPACE? We wanted an open-plan kitchen-diner and living room, so we decided to create a new kitchen in the dining area and knock through to a separate snug room. The work involved removing a huge ugly brick fireplace and an oak mantelpiece, which we’ve made into shelving and coat racks for elsewhere. A neighbouring bathroom was chopped in half to create a larder, with a cupboard for the washer-dryer off the hall on the other side. WHAT WERE YOUR MUST-HAVE FEATURES? We considered an L-shaped kitchen, but after living here for a while, we realised a simple design along one wall would work best. I knew limestone flooring would add character and I wanted a modern rustic look with industrial and vintage touches. From the start, I envisioned a shelf running along the entire back wall, rather than a wall of cupboards. DID YOU HAVE A PROJECT BUDGET IN MIND? In a word: no! We were very cash-conscious, and using our old bedroom floorboards for the splashbacks and making the shelf ourselves all helped us to save money. Finding a company online that made doors to fit Ikea kitchen carcasses also kept costs down.
Simple layout One long run of painted units with a shelf above keeps the kitchen looking streamlined and blends perfectly with the open-plan dining space 118 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019

Fact file... Meet the renovators Chloe Stickland, a photographer, and husband Scott, a business analyst, live here with children, Florence, 7 and Cece, 3 Makeover brief To create an open-plan, rustic kitchen in their detached and extended 1930s bungalow in Hampshire
Enlarged space A wall was knocked down to create a bigger kitchen, which enjoys more light. The kitchen carcasses from Ikea have been customised DIY taps Scott made the industrial style taps himself from copper pipes, while repurposed wooden floorboards provide an unusual rustic splashback
Project costs Cabinetry £1,200 Worktops £250 Sink & tap £150 Flooring £1,500 Appliances £800 Lighting £250 Total spend £4,150
WHAT WAS THE BEST BARGAIN? Incredibly, the concrete worktop only cost £250: Scott made it himself from a mould after watching YouTube videos, and it’s roughly sanded and sealed with pond resin. It looks really cool as well as being hugely practical, as it’s not only heat-resistant but also hardwearing. DID ANYTHING COST MORE THAN EXPECTED? There’s no gas in the village, so we spent £20,000 on an eco-friendly air source heat pump and underfloor heating. New bi-fold doors were also quite costly at £7,000, and opening up the ceiling space called for thousands of pounds worth of space-age SuperFOIL insulation.

New ceiling After exposing and painting the rafters, the couple made their own hanging lighting WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST LESSON YOU LEARNED? We considered a Belfast sink at first, but Scott persuaded me to go for a black resin design instead as it would match the induction hob and keep the colour palette simple. It looks fantastic, but it’s certainly hard work keeping it that way – we’re in a hard water area and the limescale quickly shows up on the black surface. 3 HOW DO YOU FEEL NOW IT’S ALL FINISHED? I just love the space and I’m so glad we exposed the roof trusses and fitted tongue-and-groove panelling. It took an age to paint, but it’s made such a difference. It was fun dressing the space, too. As my dad is an antique dealer, I’ve picked up his love of unusual finds, so we’ve happily mixed up modern art with antiques from France and India.

‘OUR FAMILY BATHROOM IS NOW COMPLETE’ Anna Lawrenson transformed an awkward, impractical space into a sleek and stylish monochrome haven Feature MANDI MILLAR Photographer FIONA WALKER ARNOTT
130 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019
BEFORE
Fact file... Meet the renovator Anna Lawrenson, a mum of four, works in hospitality Makeover brief To re-design an awkwardly shaped family bathroom, fitting in a feature bath and incorporating a toilet, which had been in a separate room Project costs Sanitaryware £1,975 Shower £1,333 Radiator £161Tiles £787 Paint £50 Total spend £4,306
Wall-mounted fittings Anna decided to spend a chunk of her budget on the wall-mounted showerhead and taps, which gives a luxurious boutique-hotel feel to the space Monochrome scheme White marble tiles reflect the light to create a brilliantly bright space, which make the black fittings pop in contrast WHAT WAS WRONG WITH YOUR ORIGINAL BATHROOM? Our bathroom always seemed small because there was a cupboard in the hall outside that jutted into it. Everything felt cramped – and we didn’t even have a toilet in there. DID YOU HAVE ANY BIG IDEAS FOR THE NEW DESIGN? I’d always had a vision of a black and white bathroom. I just love the crispness and stylishness it exudes – I think there’s an air of Art Deco about it, too. With four children, however, it needed to also be practical, and in fact, the white tiles especially have proven easy to keep clean.
Dimensions W2.5m x L3m
WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED? The main task was to knock through to the adjacent toilet and to rearrange the sanitaryware, without making what already seemed like an awkward room feel even smaller. To maximise floor space, we chose a wall-hung basin and floating toilet, and having the cistern built into the wall behind the bath also gives us an extra-long shelf. HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR BUDGET WORK FOR YOU? My budget was £4,500 and I couldn’t go over that, so I sourced everything myself, trawling the internet for inspiration. I even started up my own Instagram account (@surrey_renovation) and got loads of ideas. I spent money on key pieces that really make the look sing, like the amazing black taps.
Stylish storage
Colour co-ordinated baskets provide handy storage under the vanity unit below the basin, meaning Anna doesn’t have to clutter her wall space with shelves
ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE FINISHED RESULT? I can’t believe the difference it’s made – I’m so pleased with how the project has all come together! I love the freestanding bath – I never thought I’d have room for one, but in fact the design is very space-conscious. 3 1. Crosswater MPRO wall-mounted basin mixer tap, £236.99, Drench 2. Round matt black basin mixer with curved spout, £199, Meir 3. Vibe wall-mounted basin mono tap, £225, Frontline Bathrooms
WOULD YOU DO ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY? There is honestly nothing I’d do differently. I was a bit worried about storage, but I think the fact it’s such a clean, crisp space has actually made us all a bit tidier! The kids are less likely to leave a mess now because it’s so noticeable – and that’s got to be a win!

‘WE HAD NO ROOF OR RUNNING WATER!’ When Sue Barrett bought some old stables in Berkshire to renovate, a spacious and relaxing bathroom was top of her to-do list for her new home Feature EMMA FISHMAN Photographer SUSSIE BELL
134 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019
BEFORE
Fact file... Meet the renovator Sue Barrett, a buyer for John Lewis & Partners, lives here with daughter Amy Makeover brief To start from scratch, creating a brand-new, relaxing bathroom big enough to fit a bath and separate shower enclosure Project costs Sanitaryware £837 Scaffold boards £120 Shower and enclosure £1,361 Taps £418 Tiles £486 Shutters £275 Paint £40
Simple styling Large-format wall and floor tiles with a grey flint look are both practical and blend seamlessly with Sue's timber-led scheme. She also opted for wallmounted taps to make the space more streamlined
Total spend £3,537
Dimensions W4.7m x L2m
Wooden textures Recycled scaffold boards combined with rustic driftwood finds and a neutral colour scheme have transformed an empty shell into a brand-new bathroom
WHAT WERE YOUR BIG IDEAS FOR THE NEW DESIGN? It’s always been a dream of mine to buy and renovate an old building, and I had been looking for the perfect place for 10 years. When I finally found the stables they really were just a shell, and needed everything, from running water to electricity – and even a roof ! The bathroom was one of my priorities, so it was important that it was a decent size in order to fit in both a bath and separate shower cubicle. I was lucky in that the original windows were large and let in lots of natural light, but that was all I wanted to keep: the rest was a blank canvas, and I was ready for the challenge of creating a calming new space in keeping with the rest of the building. I also had to think about privacy as the bathroom is on the ground floor; a quote for some shutters came in way over my budget, so instead I sourced a company online who made up some lovely hinged panels with patterned fretwork. They’re my favourite part of the room. FEBRUARY 2019 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM 135
WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES TO OVERCOME? The builders had quite a job preparing the room for new plumbing, a new floor level, a timber roof as well as plastering all the surfaces. Getting water to the room is what took the longest, before the new roof could then be built! HOW DID YOU MAKE YOUR BUDGET WORK FOR YOU? I wanted a rustic feel to work in harmony with the stable setting, but to add some modern touches, too, which meant I could be quite creative. I had a friend help make up the basin cabinet with reclaimed scaffold boards, which worked out to be a real bargain. I then used the leftover wood to create a matching bath panel and a wall shelf, then used driftwood I picked up on the beach to make door handles. Choosing large-format wall and floor tiles also kept costs down as it was less work for the tiler. ARE YOU HAPPY WITH THE FINISHED RESULT? To think that this room had no roof or running water just a few months ago is truly incredible. I’m so pleased with the scheme, and delighted I have such a relaxing bathroom now, which enhances the whole house.
Separate shower The corner shower cubicle Sue craved has been positioned at the other end of the room to the bath tub, with a handy heated towel rail nearby Design details Leftover scaffold boards attached with brackets from a local craft market make tidy shelves Light & shade Pretty fretwork shutters offer privacy, while throwing star-shaped natural light into the space
EXPERT ADVICE VictoriaPlum.com's Adam Chard provides expert tips on choosing the perfect corner shower Consider the size of your bathroom. A small quadrant enclosure can be squeezed into tricky spots, while a rectangular or offset quadrant will give you more room to manoeuvre. Pick your door carefully. Hinged designs that swing outwards essentially double the space you need for the enclosure, but sliding doors keep everything compact. Both the glass and frame can be customised to suit your tastes. The glass can be plain, frosted or tinted, while its type and thickness will also affect durability and safety. The internal walls of your shower need protection from splashes and running water. Tiles work well, or for something different, acrylic shower wall panels are quick and easy to it.

THE PROJECT DETAILS
Walls of glass connect Nikki and Nigel Forsyth’s new open-plan kitchen to the landscape surrounding their home in a quintessentially English Hampshire village Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photographer STUART COX Architect OB ARCHITECTURE Why did you include so much glass in the design? When we first bought the house, it was overgrown and hidden from view. Deer and badgers visit the five-acre site, and it was important to us that the house should connect with this fantastic setting. Glass was the major factor in achieving this, and our architect – Olly Bray of OB Architecture (obarchitecture.co.uk) – designed the kitchen to be glazed on three sides, with sliding doors opening onto a deck shaded by a timber pergola. We needed to go to the planning committee to explain our case, and successfully fought for the amount of glass involved.
Q
What building work was involved? We stayed living in our previous home during the 12-month build, as the entire house was gutted and remodelled. Large aluminiumframed glass doors were installed in

the kitchen, which echo the vertical grey lines of silver birch trees outside, and open fully at one corner without any visible means of support. Lowering the floor level of the kitchen, with two steps down from the old part of the house, created high ceilings and space for the massive glass walls. What was your brief for the kitchen? We designed a pull-out larder with a plug for the toaster, which just slides away out of sight when it’s not in use, and we have a fantastic boiling-water tap instead of a kettle. The TV also drops down into the island to avoid blocking the view. Designing a kitchen with predominately glass walls did limit options when it came to positioning furniture and cabinets, but now the space feels like part of the landscape and we love being able to relax in the kitchen, enjoying the views and wildlife outside.

BE PRACTICAL Open-plan kitchens with dining and seating areas are extremely sociable, but having another quiet room to escape is the ideal solution for families, and a separate utility room will reduce noise. Choose soft furnishings and rugs to deaden sound in a large room and install eficient ventilation to extract cooking smells. CONSULT THE EXPERTS Building regulations approval will normally be required for any major internal alterations, such as removing a loadbearing wall, beam or chimney breast. When two or more rooms are combined, the window and door positions need to be considered, loor levels might not meet from one room to the next, while radiators and electrical switches and sockets may also need relocating. CONSIDER LAYOUT Remember that every wall you remove means fewer places to position furniture and radiators, so make sure you sketch potential layouts before your start and designin plenty of storage to reduce clutter.

THE PROJECT DETAILS
Tony and Sue Jones extended their Victorian terrace in London with a modern living room addition and a loft conversion clad in fibreboard cement Feature DEBBIE JEFFERY Photographer WILL PRYCE Architect PAUL ARCHER DESIGN What inspired the changes? As we’ve lived here for 30 years, we’re attached to the property and wanted to stay. We only planned to relocate the old lean-to bathroom on the lower ground floor, but this started a chain reaction, and we made changes to the whole house. Architects Paul Archer Design (paularcherdesign.co.uk) came up with very creative solutions. They proposed converting the attic into an en suite master bedroom and replacing the lean-to bathroom with a new rear extension. This forms a glazed living room, stepped down from the kitchen in the older part of the house.
Q
How smoothly did the project run? Conveniently, we rented the house right next door, and tackled the
Q
joinery and decorating ourselves to keep costs down. The biggest problem was that our original builder didn’t turn up! The company had in fact gone into liquidation. Thankfully, a local firm stepped in and did a fantastic job. In all, the project took eight months. What are the features that you love the most? The new bedroom and the rear extension are clad externally with fibre cement boarding, treated with beeswax. The shape of the living room extension is emphasised by an external recessed strip of dramatic LEDs. Glass was the most important part of the design, with doors in the loft conversion and the living room opening up the house to light and views. As we’d taped out where walls and furniture would go early on, the layout works really well.

LIMIT COLOUR A polished concrete loor was laid throughout the kitchen-dining space, which complements the sleek grey cabinets and marble worktops. Choosing a monochrome palette means that the vibrant pink chair and footstool really pop and make an eyecatching statement
CHANGE LEVELS The lower ground loor has been reorganised into a single open sequence of spaces linking the brightly lit, south-facing kitchen bay through to a protected patio and rear garden. Stepping the living room down makes a cosier, sunken seating area in the full-width extension and, together with roof glazing, maintains privacy from neighbours

CHOOSE CAREFULLY External cladding is like the overcoat to your house or extension, which everyone will see. It gives a building its character as well as adding insulation and a layer of protection against the elements. Brick, stone and render are common options, with timber weatherboarding, vertical tiling, lint, metal and modern synthetic materials also used. BE IMAGINATIVE Home buyers will often consider relatively unattractive properties if they know that changing or renewing the cladding can dramatically improve its appearance, although planning permission could be needed. CONSULT AN EXPERT Building regulations may apply, depending on the extent of the work, and cladding can contribute to the spread of ire, so always check with your builder or architect that your chosen cladding is appropriate.

Quick & healthy recipes for 2019 A new year brings with it a desire to improve our fitness and eat healthier, so kick-start your resolutions here with these simple 15-minute meals by Joe Wicks
LENTIL BOLOGNESE This family mealtime favourite has been adapted for vegetarians, and tastes so good that nobody will notice it’s meat-free!
Serves 2 • 2 tbsp olive oil • 1 large onion, inely chopped • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped into cubes • Salt and pepper • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 2 sprigs of rosemary • 200g dried green lentils • Glass of red wine • 2 x 400g tins of chopped tomatoes • 1 tbsp tomato puree • 60g walnuts • 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar • Cooked pasta of your choice • Grated cheese, to serve
1 Add the oil to a saucepan over a low heat. Tip in the chopped onion and carrots, along with a pinch of salt and pepper. Cook for six minutes until mostly softened. 2 Stir in the garlic and rosemary sprigs. Cook for another minute until it smells fragrant, then tip in the lentils. 3 Give everything a good stir, then pour in the red wine. When most of the wine has reduced, chuck in the chopped tomatoes, then reill one of the tins with water and add it in. 4 Stir in the tomato puree then
leave to cook for 20 minutes, until the sauce has thickened and the lentils are lovely and soft. 5 When the lentils are nearly cooked, toast the walnuts in a dry frying pan over a medium heat until lightly browned and smelling nutty. 6 Allow to cool and roughly chop, then add to the pan. 7 Stir in the balsamic vinegar and season your bolognese to taste, before removing the rosemary sprigs. 8 Serve with the cooked pasta and, if you’re like me, loads of grated cheese on top!

ROASTED RED PEPPER AND FETA FILO-TASTIC This delicious tart is perfect for a weekend lunchtime treat with salad leaves, or serve with a ratatouille or asparagus for an evening supper Serves 3-4 INGREDIENTS • 350g frozen spinach • 3 garlic cloves, crushed • 3 eggs • 250g jarred roasted red peppers, drained and chopped • 200g feta cheese, crumbled • Large handful of parsley, chopped • 1⁄2 tsp dried chilli lakes • Zest and juice of 1 lemon • 1 pack of ilo pastry (12 sheets) • 75g melted butter • 2 tbsp sesame seeds • Salt and pepper • Green salad, to serve
158 GOODHOMESMAGAZINE.COM FEBRUARY 2019
1 Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan 180°C, gas mark 6) and bring a kettle of water to the boil. 2 Put the frozen spinach in a bowl. Pour boiling water over it and leave for a couple of minutes. 3 Meanwhile, place the garlic in a separate bowl, crack the eggs and stir through the remaining ingredients apart from the pastry, butter and sesame seeds. 4 Drain the spinach and squeeze out as much water as possible, then add to the bowl with the other ingredients. Combine with a wooden spoon, then season. 5 Line a lat baking sheet with parchment. Unravel the pastry from its packet, then keep the sheets under a damp teatowel.
6 Place a sheet of ilo on the parchment, brush with melted butter, then sprinkle over a few sesame seeds. Slap another on top at a different angle, repeat, saving a little butter and seeds for the top. Spoon the illing into the centre of the pastry star. 7 Flatten into a rough circle with the back of a spoon, then gather in the pastry from the edges so you’re left with an enclosed pie with an exposed centre. 8 Brush the top with the remaining butter and sprinkle over the sesame seeds. 9 Bake for 25–30 minutes until the pastry is a deep golden brown. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
FANTASTIC CHOCOLATE FUDGE CAKE Although this recipe skips the butter and cream, this indulgent dessert still tastes as good as it looks!
• 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda • Pinch of salt • 80g cocoa powder (over 70% cocoa solids), plus more for dusting • 150ml maple syrup • 200ml coconut milk • Zest of 1 orange • Coconut yoghurt • Strawberries and/or raspberries, to serve (optional)
Serves 12 • 80g coconut oil, melted, plus a smidge for the tin • 50g self-raising lour • 100g ground almonds • 2 scoops (60g) vanilla protein powder • 1 tsp baking powder
1 Preheat the oven to 160°C (fan 140°C, gas mark 3). Grease a 20cm round cake tin with a little coconut oil and line the base with baking parchment. 2 Mix the self-raising lour, ground almonds, vanilla protein
powder, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. 4 In a separate bowl, whisk the cocoa powder with 150ml boiling water until well combined, then whisk in the melted coconut oil, maple syrup, coconut milk and orange zest. 5 Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and give everything a good whisk until you have a smooth, runny batter. Pour into the cake tin and bake for 35 minutes or until a skewer into the centre comes out clean. 6 Cool in the tin before removing, then dust with a little cocoa powder. Serve topped with coconut yoghurt and berries.
For a seasonal twist, go for blackberries or cherries on top
