THIS MONTH WE’RE LOVING

COLOUR BLOCKING We love an unexpected trend, especially one that shouldn’t work but just kind of does. Our new fave is two-tone colour schemes with a twist – forget pairing complementary shades for a matchy-matchy look and go for truly contrasting colours. Here, super-moody blue walls are made more cheerful with an uplifting is-it-coral-or-is-it-blancmange pink shade on the cabinetry. The coral is brighter than the soft millennial pink we’ve seen everywhere, making it the perfect pick-me-up for the blue. See? It just works. House Beautiful APRIL 2022 17

SUSTAINABLE STATEMENT Wallpaper is on a roll with decorative designs being printed onto sustainable cork widths using water-based inks. Appealing to minimalists, the natural characteristics and tactile texture lend themselves perfectly to calm, understated schemes. Did you know that the manual process of harvesting the cork bark means no trees are cut or damaged? Plus, any waste can be reincorporated into the production process or used for shoe soles, insulation panels and yoga mats. witching up the interiors game by giving independent artisans a platform is TV presenter and Insta go-to for lifestyle inspiration Laura Jackson, with her new online shop Glassette. This homewares hub of thoughtful shopping showcases a curated collective of little-known, independent brands and makers. With sustainability in mind, each has been chosen based on the longevity and artistry of its products and use of environmentally conscious materials. The national lockdown sparked a craze of home improvements and a newfound love of interiors. ‘Many of us rediscovered the joy in setting the table for dinner, and the ceremonious feeling of fresh sheets on the bed,’ says Laura. Which is where her digital marketplace comes in. Alongside shapely glassware, patterned textiles and limited-edition monthly drops, there are mini collections from the likes of Fearne Cotton, Ravneet Gill and Laura herself.

JUST ADD YELLOW

With its mood-boosting qualities and instant feeling of warmth, yolky yellow is making its mark in interiors this season. Whether you choose to have a change-up of furniture, introduce new accessories or go all out with the paintbrush, decorating with cheery pops of this gloriously golden shade is a sure-fire way to step into spring in style.

SOURCE OF INSPIRATION You shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. Though actually, this time you’d do well to do just that. With a decorative cover like this, a spot on the coffee table is the perfect place to showcase fantastic patterns and colours that really grab attention. The title Jungalow is a term author Justina Blakeney uses to encapsulate her wild but homely style of decorating. In this book, she shares her distinctive point of view on how to make bold choices, take cues from nature and collect inspiration.

SORBET SHADES SPRING INTO ACTION We don’t want to jinx it, but spring is basically here. OK, there’s still a nip in the air, but winter is but a memory. And that means we can all turn our attention to new beginnings – and new homewares. A cursory JODQFH DW DQ\ FRUQHU RI VRFLDO PHGLD ZLOO FRQĠUP WKDW the hottest – albeit pale – colours of the season are pastels (see page 36 for how to decorate every room of the house with the modern grown-up crop). Our favourite take are the (almost) good-enough-to-eat sorbet shades. Serve up the trend for yourself with gorgeous hand-blown glass vases in dusty peach, sugary lilac and powder blue hues. They’re ideal for your seasonal blooms, obviously, but they also make quirky pieces of art in their own right. Delicious. Vases, from a selection, Broste Copenhagen

Styling tip If you're looking to admire the view with a window seat but don’t fancy forking out for a custom-built design, cheat with a shoe bench or two. Choose a model with pullout baskets to provide hidden storage, and top with an upholstered cushion – this will soon become your favourite spot for garden gazing.

LET IN THE LIGHT

Choose a colour palette that maximises natural light sources – subdued shades of white can make a space feel bright and airy. Steer away from brilliant white as this can feel cold. Styling tip Picking nature-inspired colours is a no-fail approach for conjuring up a soothing scheme. Paler hues, such as lavender and lilac, have a grey undertone that can be enlivened by being teamed with a deeper plum or aubergine for a calm and romantic look.

Choose natural, rustic wood with touches of brass and a marble worktop for a stunning contrast

POWDERY SOFT LILAC

Having made a strong comeback, lilac has attached itself to the playful trio of sugar-sweet pastels (mint, sherbet and rose) that continues to reign as a design trend. Done the right way, soft purples feel modern and sophisticated – ground this look by teaming them with darker plums and black accents, and mix in industrial and natural elements such as concrete and wood. EARTHY RED

PORTRAIT AND DETAIL PHOTOGRAPHS ALUN CALLENDER

T

here’s something really grounding and homely about colours of the land, and we are seeing more of these hues, from muted clay to vibrant ochre, in the most fashionable interiors. With connotations of terra firma, they help us feel safe, stable and closer to nature. Earthy red is my favourite as it incorporates all the drama and richness of red, but made more liveable by the grounding properties of earth brown. It’s an assertive, strong and bold colour that brings a hearty feeling of warmth and wellbeing. I’d feel confident using it on every wall in a room, or on a large piece of upholstery, such as the sofa, for maximum snug appeal. I have terracotta floor tiles in my north-facing kitchen and I love how the toasty red tones create a cosseting backdrop to my green kitchen. And it doesn’t have to be the main event – earthy red can also make a wonderful warm neutral that allows other colours to shine. Because of its natural vibe, it goes very well with rustic textures, like rough-hewn stone and timber. Accessorise with antique Persian rugs, Moroccan tufted cushions and burnished-gold light fittings to ramp up the luxurious sense of cosiness. This colour has a resonance with the past and looks completely at home in period properties. I’d recommend it for anywhere you want to create a warm welcome – in the hallway, kitchen or living room – and it would look fabulous in a dining room highlighted by sultry candlelight. In a more modern interior, use it as an accent colour with a nod to mid-century vibes, and keep it feeling fresh with house palms and pale wicker furniture. If you want a dose of heartiness at home, light the fire, put a pot of stew on the stove and fall back into an earthy red velvet sofa for maximum feelgood vibes.

The design icon: Ikea Billy bookcase Who designed it: Gillis Lundgren (left) When & how: $V RQH RI WKH ĠUVW employees of Swedish furniture giant Ikea, designer Gillis Lundgren pro duced some of the brand’s most important pieces. The Billy bookcase sits at the very top of that list. With its initial prototype sketched on the back of a napkin, production of the shelving unit began in 1978 and it has since become one of the most popular pieces of furniture ever created.

PHOTOGRAPHS INTER IKEA SYSTEMS B.V.

WHY WE LOVE IT A new Billy is reportedly manufactured every 15 seconds and it’s estimated that there are more than 100 million of them in people’s homes all around the world. Lundgren’s aim was to create firstly ‘an affordable bookcase’, but one ‘that would suit every kind of person and many different living spaces’ too. The popularity of the creation is testament to the designer’s success. With Ikea’s flatpack format, the ubiquitous bookcase must be self-assembled which, although not ideal for those easily frustrated by instruction manuals and finicky screws, is relatively swift and simple once you get going. There’s a modular element to the Billy, as the design is available in different heights and widths, which can be combined to create infinite configurations that will work in any space.

WHY YOU’LL LOVE IT FOREVER Aesthetically, it’s perhaps the Billy’s ‘blank canvas’ quality that makes it so versatile – in some homes, it’s used simply to keep books neat, but in others it acts as a backdrop for exuberant ‘shelfie’ displays, with a curated edit of houseplants, photo frames and assorted trinkets peppered among literary titles. A simple search on Pinterest reveals other creative ways people have made their mark on a Billy, from wallpapering its back panel for enchanting toy storage in a nursery, to affixing decorative trims to its facade to soften how the piece looks in a bedroom. With its endless possibilities, there’s so much more to it than first meets the eye. From £15 for a 40 x 28 x 106cm Billy bookcase, ikea.com/gb

WHAT MAKES A DESIGN ICON? For a piece to be truly iconic to the HB editors, it needs to: » Be recognisable homeware that deserves the spotlight. » Illustrate innovative design, whether from the high street or a showroom. » Have longevity and really stand the test of time. » Serve as an object of desire – beautiful, yes, but useful, too. » Be a piece that is used every day by House Beautiful editors.

uth Mottershead and her husband James found their house – part of a small development built in 2017 on the site of a former farmhouse – via a family friend. After looking at more than 20 properties, the couple knew this was a fantastic opportunity, being something they could move into straight away and decorate to their taste. Manchester is nearby and there are fantastic views of farmland. Having lived in the city centre for several years, the couple hankered after a space where they could relax. ‘This house is a haven for us,’ says Ruth. ‘It’s always peaceful and feels restorative; a great place to escape from our busy work lives.’ Made from Cheshire brick with solid stone windowsills, the building was immediately a hit with Ruth. She also loves its garden and private location offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. As the couple bought the house off-plan, they were able to make a few design changes, such as the tiles and flooring, giving them the opportunity to put their stamp on it early on. ‘We both work in colour and pattern,’ explains Ruth, ‘and knew we wanted to introduce both into the space by using a clever mix of wallpaper and paint.’ They were keen to create a contemporary 70 housebeautiful.com/uk

yet comfortable place; a home that would work for them both. ‘We also made sure to incorporate our many treasured objects and photographs collected over the years,’ adds Ruth. The result is a modern home oozing with character. One of the main challenges for the couple was to create more storage space. ‘There’s no garage and just a tiny loft, so we had to look for alternative options,’ says Ruth. They solved the problem by fitting bespoke cupboards under the stairs and floor-to-ceiling Sharps wardrobes in the bedrooms. For daughter Ivy’s room, they chose freestanding units from The White Company. The other critical requirement was to add character to this new-build, and the couple have done this mainly by incorporating colour and pattern. In the sitting room, for example, Ruth made a feature of the space by painting the wall up to picture rail height in a bold but muted green, with a soft pink above and up to the ceiling. Over time, the house has evolved and it continues to do so, especially since the birth of Ivy. Recently, an area has been adapted for home working – Ruth has created a space in her bedroom for a desk and the kitchen table doubles up as a work zone where she can spread out her colour charts and paperwork. ‘Everything is multipurpose,’ she says. As the kitchen is an L-shape and there were numerous things to take into consideration, it created a design challenge. ‘We wanted to include a dining area plus a chill-out zone,’ explains Ruth. ‘It

was particularly important to us to have a space to sit down and eat as we love to have dinner together in the evenings,’ she adds. Upstairs, all the rooms have beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and Ruth was keen to keep this as the focus. In the main bedroom, they started with soft blue on the ceiling and walls, then introduced darker colours and added pattern to create a warm and comfortable scheme. ‘I really enjoyed putting this room together,’ says Ruth. ‘We chose our favourite wallpaper design, which we’d worked on together, so this has a special place in our hearts.’ However, it’s Ivy’s nursery that is the couple’s favourite room in the house. ‘We put so much love into this space,’ explains Ruth. Everything, from the wallpaper to the cot was carefully chosen and considered. The whole process has been a steep learning curve for the couple. Ruth is delighted to have tried wallpapering for the first time – her successful first attempt hangs proudly in the guest bedroom. ‘It’s been great using the products we sell,’ says Ruth. ‘We chose safe plain fabrics due to our more adventurous wallpaper choices. One of the biggest challenges was painting the ceilings, which took a long time. ‘We love our home as it makes us feel calm and relaxed, and it’s lovely to be in the countryside but near Manchester at the same time,’ says Ruth. It really is the best of both worlds. Find Ruth on Instagram @_paintgirl

hen Miriam and Declan found this Putney townhouse in the autumn of 2014, they were keen to put their mark on it. ‘It was love at first sight for me,’ says Miriam. ‘I could see the beauty of its bones and the potential, but it took me a while to convince Declan, as it was operating as six separate bedsits and was in a poor state of repair; one of the rooms even had a plastic bag where the window should have been.’ However, all their ideas had to be put on hold when an unexpected three-year work-related move took them to Chicago. ‘It was hard to leave when we had just found our forever home, but we were excited to embrace a new adventure, and were able to pick up design ideas and influences on our travels,’ recalls Miriam. On their return to the UK in 2018, the arrival of their son Cillian also brought a new perspective to their design considerations. A major task lay ahead: although the house had great structure, after years of being divided into multiple rental spaces it was in dire need of renovating and reconfiguring. ‘We hadn’t considered a fixer-upper. Neither of us had ever done a renovation before, but we just couldn’t resist the challenge,’ says Miriam, ‘and it’s definitely been that!’ With busy working lives and a young baby, the couple struggled to find the time to make all the design decisions needed with such a big project. ‘I had an image of what I wanted for each stage of the design, but I didn’t have the time to source the items or discuss what was possible with the builders, which is critical when renovating an old home as there are all kinds of quirky obstacles,’ explains Miriam. The couple quickly realised that they would need to call in help if they were to keep their vision on track and turned to interior

designer Yoko Kloeden, a move Miriam describes as a ‘game changer’. ‘I was able to design the house the way I wanted without losing all our evenings and weekends to the renovation,’ she says. ‘It significantly reduced our stress levels and improved the pace of the project. It also meant we avoided heated “debates” about smaller decisions involving light sockets or skirting boards.’ As work began, the builders made exciting daily discoveries; hidden behind the poor-quality bedsit additions were original period features such as floorboards and fireplaces in each room, stained-glass windows and decorative ceiling mouldings. Yoko worked alongside Miriam and Declan to design a new double-storey extension giving the party-loving family a large open-plan communal cooking and dining space, opening through wide Crittall doors (a nod to London’s industrial heritage) into a courtyard garden, where the couple love to entertain in the summer months. With five bedrooms ranged across the two upper storeys, the house offers plenty of space for visiting family and friends, while the original smaller rooms downstairs at the front of the property have been cleverly transformed into separate ‘his’ and ‘hers’ hideaways, where Miriam and Declan get the chance to wind down from their busy careers and family life at the end of the day. Each of them had a very distinct idea of how they wanted their space to look. ‘I think how I would describe my style and how my husband would describe it would be two different things!’ says Miriam, who intended to create a serene and feminine space, while Declan had a vision of a club-style den housing his oriental finds. Keen to restore as many original architectural features as possible, and to incorporate the antique mirrors, lighting and furniture the couple had collected over the years, Yoko had the challenge of editing it all into a cohesive home. ‘Miriam and Declan had many different House Beautiful APRIL 2022 81

design influences in their pieces, from gentlemen’s cigar club-style armchairs to lacquered antique cabinets from China,’ she says. The end result is superb, from the Parisian salon-inspired calm sanctuary of Miriam’s space, where she loves to share a glass of wine with friends or curl up in front of the fire in winter, to the contrasting look of Declan’s self-declared ‘man cave’ with its leather Chesterfield armchairs, antique map and antler lamps. By giving each room its own identity to suit the use of the space, yet maintaining a thread of natural materials such as exposed brickwork, wooden flooring and marble throughout the house, Yoko has ensured that the eclectic pieces all work in harmony. Sustainability has also played an important role, with bricks salvaged from the original building reused to form the half wall at the rear of the raised garden eating area. The couple love to spend time immersed in nature, so dried flowers, grasses and plants have also been used throughout to add texture and a link to the natural world beyond. The result is a unique reflection of the travels, life and loves of its owners, where Edwardian character sits in harmony alongside contemporary pieces, and for all there is a ‘room of one’s own’. t

he day I moved in, I ripped up all the carpets,’ says Charlie Davis, an interior stylist. ‘And then raised a toast to my new life!’ This new life is the theme of the house, from layout to decor, thanks to imaginative design solutions and creative use of reclaimed materials. Charlie’s move coincided with meeting her partner Piers, who is an art fabricator and metalworker. His practical skills were a perfect match for Charlie’s eye for design, and together they embarked on an ambitious project to bring more light and space into this Victorian terrace in East Sussex. ‘From the moment I bought the house, I knew exactly what the layout should be,’ says Charlie, and she set about making the changes needed to transform the space. The kitchen was opened up to allow for more sociable living, while a loft extension completely altered the feel and function of the house, with smaller areas giving way to larger, more liveable rooms, including a family bathroom and an expansive bedroom. Despite her tight budget, Charlie was uncompromising about her vision for the house. ‘If there’s one thing I learned during this process, it’s that you can do anything if you put your mind to it,’ she explains. And there are countless examples throughout that illustrate her success in achieving exactly the interior she wanted, including the convenient little loo tucked beneath the stairs on the ground floor, and the heritage flooring installed in the new loft extension. Charlie and Piers wanted the loft to feel open, so they designed a double dormer and open-plan ensuite, with no unnecessary walls or doors to close off any space. The floor-to-ceiling picture window frames a view over the rooftops of Hove and out to the sea. Thanks to Charlie’s keen eye, the house has a unique feel, featuring furniture and materials that bring a distinct character to each room. ‘I love to mix eras,’ she says. With the combination of vintage and modern throughout, the interiors tell a story – of the objects themselves, and the role they play in Charlie and Piers’s story. ‘A pair of chairs looked very sorry for themselves when we saw them in a French brocante,’ says Charlie of the smart pink seats that sit alongside the sofa. ‘They

needed rescuing, so we bought them for £50 and re-upholstered them. The rattan adds a great texture to the living room.’ The front of the first floor was previously a small bedroom and bathroom. Charlie knocked down the internal wall to create one large bedroom, and transformed the bedroom at the rear of the house into a family bathroom with a tiled floor and, specifically, a perfect-width shelf for accessories and knick-knacks. ‘When we moved in, the kitchen was carpeted – not great for spills,’ explains Charlie. ‘And you could only access the garden through a side passage.’ Now it has parquet flooring and Charlie commissioned a local joiner to make the patio doors that open into the garden. This change meant the kitchen is now a more sociable space. ‘Whoever is cooking can chat with guests, whether they’re sitting at the kitchen table, or relaxing in the garden,’ says Charlie. ‘Piers installed the cabinets along the wall,’ she continues. ‘Our relationship was still new, but I told him it was 1mm off. He thought I 90 housebeautiful.com/uk

was joking. We spent many nights sleeping on a mattress on the floor before the electricity was installed, and many days listening to loud music and smashing down walls with sledgehammers.’ Working to a small budget meant that the couple took on much of the renovation work themselves. This included enlisting Charlie’s parents to help them install the parquet flooring and mosaic tiles in the kitchen. ‘Initially we employed a professional tiler; he started at the ends of the wall and when he got to the middle, the final tile wouldn’t fit,’ recalls Charlie. ‘We ended up spending two days and nights redoing the work ourselves. I was laughing at the beginning, crying in the middle, and laughing again at the end. My advice? Always start your tiling from just one point.’ Charlie has carefully curated every space and the end result is the sense of a lived-in and much-loved home, full of history and personality. Complementary textures and different eras bring a sense of depth to each room and the house now has a new story to tell.

INSPIRING HOMES

waking an old house from its slumber had long been a shared dream for Nicole Schulz and her husband, Thorsten. And in 2014, this dream came true when the couple began renovating their detached house in Hamburg, north Germany. When they first laid eyes on it, the property was rundown and in poor condition, almost hidden by an overgrown garden, and the conservatory, now the couple’s favourite spot, was completely dilapidated. But despite all the work that needed to be done, Nicole and Thorsten fell in love with the place and, little by little, began to breathe fresh life into it. Walking through the bright, open-plan house now, it’s hard to imagine how dark and small the rooms were before the renovation. One of the couple’s first priorities was to take out the partition wall between the dining room and the kitchen on the ground floor and install an exposed steel beam. The original floorboards were then sanded down and oiled white, the walls painted with chalk paint and the conservatory lovingly rebuilt. Even the tiniest details were carefully considered by Nicole and Thorsten. They wanted to allow the old house to tell a story by preserving its character and beautiful imperfections. Fortunately, it had plenty of period charm, with its high ceilings, original flooring and wooden staircase. By retaining these features, the couple have created a stylish and unique home. The property’s interior is a mix of country and townhouse, where playful Art Nouveau elements meet calm, harmonious colour palettes. Light, naturalness and cosiness are all important to the couple. They share a love of country-house charm, industrial chic and Nordic

‘Our diverse living space reflects our attitude to life and our love of nature’ design, and their scheme skilfully combines vintage pieces with a minimalist-inspired aesthetic. ‘Our diverse living space reflects our attitude to life, our values and our love of nature,’ explains Nicole. ‘The style is uncomplicated and personal, and proves that you can combine tradition and trends. We don’t have to choose between our love of the country and the buzz of the city, because this style works everywhere.’ Sometimes it is hard for Nicole to maintain her minimalist, clutter-free style, as she comes across so many covetable pieces online, in magazines and at interior design fairs through her job. However, by decorating seasonally she can constantly change and update her scheme, and she always has DIY, upcycling and garden projects on the go. ‘Our favourite room is the conservatory, because it’s so beautiful and bright and we love the view of the garden,’ explains Nicole. ‘The sofa invites you to stop and read, or even sit and do nothing. This is also where we like to spend time eating and relaxing with friends and family.’ Since 2007, Nicole has shared her passion for contemporary, country-inspired decor with the customers of her interiors shop Casitaverde. Here, she sells furniture, her artwork and upcycled vintage pieces, as well as the chalk paints she used in her own home. For Nicole and Thorsten, the house is now a place where they can embrace their creativity – a ‘nest’ where everyone, including their family and friends from near and far, can feel completely at home. oday, the weatherboarded and brick buildings in the street where Kate Monckton lives are almost all houses. But just 50 years ago, it must have had a very different feel. As the local bakery, Kate’s own house had a commanding position in the village. A note from the last of the bakers, which Kate still has, describes a sweet shop, greengrocer, butcher, tailor and an undertaker along the row. ‘That note is a lovely snapshot of how the village was 50 years ago,’ says Kate. When she first moved to this East Sussex village, Kate was mindful of respecting the Grade II-listed house’s history, with features that include 18th-century beams, worn brick paving and the original cast-iron oven. However, she also wanted to introduce a new feel to reflect her own personality and interiors style. First, the house was given a thorough overhaul, which included installing a damp course, stripping back and replastering the walls, upgrading the heating and plumbing, and laying new flooring. ‘Previously, it had rather bright pine floorboards, which didn’t suit the mood of the building,’ explains Kate. Darker rough-sawn oak boards now run from the front living room to the adjoining snug at the back, where Kate reads or watches TV in the evenings. The walls were already lined in dark oak panelling, but Kate has hung a row of ceremonial masks from Africa on one side, to add a different style note to the beamed space. ‘Although the panelling is not original to the property, it does date from the 18th century, so is in keeping with the architecture,’ she says. A hefty salvaged door, also a later addition that Kate inherited, leads from this space into the brick-paved rear hallway. ‘The door came from a prison and has a metal peephole in its centre,’ she explains. An altogether lighter mood prevails in the main living room, which is painted in the powdery shade of Blue Grass by Fired Earth. ‘I liked

the idea of having a slightly unexpected colour in here,’ says Kate. This blue backdrop provided the starting point for her interiors scheme, which ‘came together surprisingly quickly,’ she continues. ‘As I rented a house around the corner before I moved in here, I was in the enviable position of being able to pop in when the builders weren’t around,’ she recalls. ‘I took all of my fabric and paint samples with me, which allowed me to calmly and quietly build up a picture of each room. From that point, my choices felt instinctive.’ The building work included turning the previous kitchen with the old Victorian bakery oven into a utility room and relocating the kitchen/diner to the rear of the house, where it has views over the secluded walled garden. For the kitchen’s cabinetry, dining table and bespoke built-in seating, Kate chose Fired Earth’s Wild Olive. ‘I know I won’t get bored with this shade – the entire house was designed with longevity in mind,’ she says. Collections of art and vintage objects, from gleaming 1920s glassware to decorative ceramics made by Kate, add more pizzazz and personality. Before working as an interior designer, Kate ran her own fashion PR company, but moving here gave her more time to learn new skills, including pottery. She has recently set up a small studio at home, selling online and in Streett Marburg’s antiques shop in Fulham. Kate has a longstanding love of fabrics and chose classic prints by Lewis & Wood and William Yeoward for curtains and upholstery, with just a glimpse of Morris & Co’s Strawberry Thief on a headboard in a guest bedroom. A pair of Piero Lissoni velvet armchairs, picked up for a song at Lots Road Auctions in Chelsea, and a copper coffee table strike more contemporary notes. ‘I have a few modern pieces but I deliberately didn’t choose anything too trend-driven,’ says Kate. ‘Instead, I wanted to create a sense of timelessness and calm.’ To see more of Kate’s work, visit katemonckton.com

hat prompted your makeover? During lockdown, my attention shifted to my home. I wanted to sprinkle some positivity into my life by decorating and the bedroom felt like a natural place to start. It’s a lovely bright room, but the decor lacked personality. My idea was to turn it into a grown-up space to relax and sleep in.

‘As well as there being little storage for my ever-growing collection of vintage clothes, there was also a damp patch that needed attention, and the carpets and walls were stained,’ says Maxine. 116 housebeautiful.com/uk

I also invested in made-to-measure cupboards, spanning a whole wall – they doubled my storage space overnight. And I adore the navy colour, which brings gravitas to the room. FIRST STEP: ALL ABOUT THE PREP Putting up shelves, tackling simple tiling, decorating, adding new window treatments and revamping furniture are all simple changes that can make a big difference. And preparation is the key to success with any DIY transformation.

THINK AHEAD From magazines to interiors shops, Pinterest, Instagram, hotels and your friends’ houses, home design ideas are all around us. Gather together files of inspiration for your projects, whether in a paper scrapbook or on your laptop or phone.

GET STARTED: WALLS For best results, prepare walls thoroughly before painting or wallpapering. Standard wallpaper can usually be papered over, but strip off any that is textured or washable using a stripping knife and water with a little detergent, or a steam stripper. Fill holes or cracks and sand smooth. Wash walls with a weak solution of water and washing-up liquid or sugar soap before decorating. If the wall isn’t smooth, it can be lined with heavy-duty lining paper. New bare plaster needs to be thoroughly dry, then a coat of diluted PVA applied to seal the surface.

PAINT POINTERS When choosing colours, try out shades in the room using match pots. Paint a large patch on the wall, or onto a big piece of lining paper

that can be pinned up and moved around. Look at the colour in artificial light as well as daylight. You can expect around 12 square metre coverage for every litre of paint. One-coat paints and more expensive brands that include more pigment in the formula may require fewer coats.

PAPER IT Wallpapering is less daunting when using paste-the-wall options. An online calculator will help you order the right quantity; and look for matching batch numbers on each roll to avoid variations in colour.

UPCYCLE EASY

Above Update furniture with a lick of paint. Find a similar chest at Angel & Boho Top and left Transform a room in a weekend with a statement wallpaper

You can achieve rustic, modern, vintage and distressed looks using Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan, and it can be applied straight onto most surfaces without the need for sanding or priming. ‘I recommend applying a coat of shellac to older pieces and using it to treat knots in new, untreated wood; this will prevent stains showing through,’ says Annie. Almond apricot loaf I usually call this a tea cake, not because it has any connection to the traditional English fruit bun, but because it’s one of my favourite cakes to have with a big, fat mug of tea – not too delicate or too sweet, with chunks of almonds and dried apricots running through. I’m a fan of using dried fruits, as they not only seem to last forever, but they also spruce up a really simple cake. I’ve used a longer, narrower loaf tin purely because I love the way it looks, and it gives smaller, chunkier slices.

’m not someone who needs an excuse to bake,’ says cook, writer and The Great British Bake Off quarter finalist Benjamina Ebuehi. ‘Setting aside a little time during the week to use my hands to create something that will bring a smile to people’s faces and joy to their bellies is an act I don’t take for granted.’ It’s a sentiment we can fully get behind, which is why we’ve picked our favourite recipes from her new book A Good Day To Bake for you to cook for those you love. If you can bear to share, that is…

Cherry and coconut tahini cake The pops of sweet cherries and the glug of tahini help keep this cake soft and moist with a crumbly, coconutty texture. Add a little cherry glaze for a burst of colour and this cake is a real delight. SERVES 6-8 » 120g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing » 150g light brown sugar » 40g tahini » 2 eggs » 130g plain flour » 50g desiccated coconut » 1½tsp baking powder » ¼tsp ground cardamom » ¼tsp salt » 90g cherries, pitted and halved » 1tsp sesame seeds FOR THE GLAZE » 40g cherries, pitted and halved » ½tbsp lemon juice » 100g icing sugar 130 housebeautiful.com/uk

1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/ gas mark 4. Grease and line a 15cm cake tin. 2 Using a stand mixer or electric whisk, cream the butter and sugar together for 4-5min until pale and fluffy. Add the tahini and beat for another minute. Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. 3 In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, coconut, baking powder, ground cardamom and salt. Pour the mixture into the butter mixture and mix on low speed until combined. 4 Spoon the batter into the prepared tin and add the cherries on top, along with the sesame seeds. Bake for 50-55min, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. 5 Turn the cake out onto a wire rack and leave to cool. 6 To make the glaze, add the cherries and lemon juice to a small bowl and mash with a fork. Pass the mixture through a fine sieve or strainer, squeezing and pressing to get out as much juice as possible. Add the icing sugar to the juice and mix until you have a smooth, pourable consistency. 7 Once the cake has cooled, drizzle over the glaze.

SERVES 8 » 150g dried apricots, chopped into 1cm chunks » 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing » 300g caster sugar » 2tbsp amaretto liqueur or ½tsp almond extract » 3 eggs » 200g plain flour » 40g ground almonds » 2tsp baking powder » ¼tsp salt » 80g plain yogurt » 100g whole almonds, roughly chopped » Icing sugar, for dusting 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/ gas mark 4. Grease and line a 32 x 13cm loaf tin. Bring a kettle of water to the boil. 2 Put the apricot chunks in a small bowl and pour over just enough boiling water to cover. Leave to soak for 20min. 3 Beat the butter, sugar and amaretto or almond extract together for 4-6min in a stand mixer or with an electric whisk, and whisk until very pale and fluffy. Make sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl every so often. Add in the eggs, one at time, beating really well after each addition. 4 In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, ground almonds, baking powder and salt. Drain the apricots and toss them in the flour mixture. Pour half of this mixture into the butter mixture and mix on low speed until just combined. Stir in the yogurt, followed by the rest of the flour mixture and the chopped almonds. 5 Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 50-60min, or until a skewer inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. Let the cake cool completely before dusting with icing sugar to serve.

Cook’s note

Dried fruits spruce up a really simple cake. Soaking the apricots in hot water before use will rehydrate them, making them a bit more plump and juicy.

Line two baking sheets with baking paper. 2 Roughly chop the hazelnuts and add them to a large frying pan along with the oats. Toast the oats and nuts over a medium-high heat, turning and tossing frequently. Once they start to smell toasty and take on a bit of colour, remove from the heat and pour into a large bowl. Add

the flour, coconut and salt to the bowl, give it a good mix and set aside. 3 In a medium saucepan, melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup together. Bring to a simmer, then tip in the bicarbonate of soda, stirring constantly to combine. Once the mixture begins to foam and thicken, remove from the heat and pour immediately into the dry ingredients. Stir thoroughly until the dry ingredients are evenly coated. 4 Use a small ice-cream scoop or a tablespoon to measure out 12 balls of dough and place them on the baking sheets, leaving about 2.5cm between them. Flatten the tops a little. 5 Bake for 12-16min or until the edges are firm. The biscuits firm up as they cool, but if you prefer a crunchier biscuit, bake them for 2-3min longer. Leave them to cool on a wire rack before eating.

Irish cream toffee lamingtons Assembling these little cubes of cake can be a bit of a messy job, so just embrace it. I make these fairly big, because why not, but feel free to opt for smaller pieces. MAKES 12-16 FOR THE SPONGE » 120g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing » 150ml milk » 4½tbsp Baileys Irish cream liqueur » 1tsp vanilla extract » 4 eggs » 280g caster sugar » 250g plain flour » 2tsp baking powder » ¼tsp salt FOR THE TOFFEE SAUCE » 50g unsalted butter » 90g dark brown sugar » 200ml double cream » 2tbsp Baileys Irish cream liqueur » Big pinch of flaky sea salt » 30g dark chocolate, roughly chopped TO FINISH » 250g desiccated coconut 1 First, make the sponge. Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan/gas mark 4. Grease a 23 x 33cm cake tin and line with baking paper, leaving an overhang to help you lift the cake out later. 2 In a small saucepan, gently heat the butter, milk, liqueur and vanilla until the butter is melted. Remove from heat and leave to cool. 3 In the bowl of a stand mixer or using an electric whisk, whip the eggs and sugar on high speed for 4-5min until thick and pale and doubled in volume. With the mixer still running, pour in the cooled milk mixture and whisk for another minute to combine. Tip in the flour, baking powder and salt, and whisk again until you have a smooth, runny batter. 4 Pour the batter into the tin and bake for 30-35min until golden and a skewer inserted into the middle comes out clean. Turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. 5 Meanwhile, make the sauce. Add all the ingredients except the chocolate to a small saucepan and bring to a simmer, stirring every so often. Let the sauce bubble and cook for 2min before removing from the heat and stirring in the chocolate. Stir until melted. Pour the sauce into a shallow dish and let it cool to room temperature. 6 When you’re ready to assemble, pour the coconut into a shallow dish. Cut the sponge into 12-16 even squares. Dip each piece into the sauce, making sure to coat all sides. Let the excess drip off before coating each side in coconut. Place on a wire rack to set for 10-15min before serving.

Spiced bread and butter pudding with saffron and dates Croissants are my bread of choice here, because the tops get unbelievably crisp and, in a pudding that is mostly quite soft, I always welcome a bit of crunch. The warming saffron custard that seeps into the bellies of the croissants is earthy and grassy, infused with ginger and cardamom to brighten it up.

Chocolate and hazelnut millionaire’s shortbread These sweet squares are a classic but this version has a lightly spiced chocolate base and a pinch of sea salt to balance out the sweetness. MAKES 9 FOR THE SHORTBREAD BASE » 120g cold unsalted butter, diced, plus extra for greasing » 150g plain flour » 50g caster sugar » 20g cocoa powder » ½tsp ground cinnamon » ¼tsp ground cardamom » ¼tsp salt FOR THE TOPPING » 160g blanched hazelnuts » 1 x 397g can condensed milk » 100g light brown sugar » 125g unsalted butter » 1tsp flaky sea salt » 120g dark chocolate » Small handful of cacao nibs (optional) 1 Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/ gas mark 6. 2 Grease a 20cm square cake tin and line with baking paper, leaving an overhang to help you lift the shortbread out later. 3 Place all the shortbread ingredients into a bowl. Use your fingertips to rub the butter into the dry ingredients until crumbly. Knead and squeeze the dough a few times in the bowl to bring it together in clumps. 134 housebeautiful.com/uk

4 Tip the dough into the prepared tin and press it down evenly into all the corners. Use the back of a spoon to smooth it out. Bake for 20-25min until cooked through, then leave to cool completely. 5 Add the hazelnuts to a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 10min until fragrant and golden. Remove from the oven and let cool before chopping them roughly, leaving a few whole. 6 To make the caramel layer, add the condensed milk, sugar, butter and salt to a saucepan. Heat over a medium-low heat until the butter and sugar melt. Stir continuously for 8-12min until the caramel thickens and starts to darken in colour. It’s quite easy for the caramel to catch at the bottom of the pan, so be sure to keep stirring, especially in the corners. 7 Remove from heat, stir in the hazelnuts to coat and then pour this mixture onto the biscuit base, spreading it in an even layer. Let it cool and firm up for 15min. 8 Melt the chocolate in the microwave or in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Pour the chocolate onto the caramel layer and tilt it about so it covers all the caramel. Top with the cacao nibs (if using). Chill in the refrigerator for 10-15min until set. When it’s firm enough to cut, remove from the tin and use a hot knife to cut into neat squares or bars.

SERVES 4-6 » 240ml milk » 300ml double cream » 8-10 strands of saffron » 30g fresh root ginger, grated » 6 cardamom pods, lightly crushed » 2 eggs plus 1 egg yolk » 70g caster sugar » 4 large croissants, slightly stale » 50g dates, roughly chopped » 1tbsp demerara sugar 1 Pour the milk, cream, saffron, ginger and cardamom into a medium saucepan and heat gently until just before boiling. 2 Remove from heat, cover and let the milk steep and cool for at least 30min. 3 Preheat the oven to 190°C/170°C fan/ gas mark 5. Get out a baking dish approximately 26 x 21cm in size. 4 In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, egg yolk and caster sugar together briefly until well mixed and smooth. Set aside. 5 Use a sieve to strain the milk and pour it back into the saucepan. You can add a few strands of saffron back into the milk if you want a stronger flavour. Gently heat the milk and bring to a simmer, then remove from the heat and pour it into the egg mixture in three additions, whisking as you pour until all the milk is incorporated. 6 Slice the croissants in half horizontally and layer half of them in your baking dish. Scatter half of the chopped dates on top. Pour just over half of the custard on top of the croissants and let it soak in for a few minutes before layering up with the remaining croissants and dates. Pour on the rest of the custard and sprinkle the demerara sugar on top. 7 Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20min, then remove the foil and bake for a further 15-20min until the top is crisp and the pudding has just a little wobble. 8 Let it cool and settle for 10min before serving. Trying to write a column on eggs is like trying to fit the entire history of the world onto the back of a napkin, but here goes… Almost every food culture across the globe uses eggs at the centre of its cooking and, to many, they are the symbol of new life, wealth and prosperity. Eggs are indispensable in the kitchen as a breakfast staple, raising agent, emulsifier, binding agent, thickener or a catch-all for leftovers. I’m fascinated by the science of eggs. Harold McGee has a whole chapter devoted to them in his classic book On Food and Cooking, which deals with everything from how an egg grows inside a bird to protein coagulation and egg-beating techniques. However, most home cooks need just a few basic principles. First, get the best you can afford. Eggs vary wildly in quality, from the insipid, watery ones from battery-farmed hens, to buttery yolked specimens from free-roaming ones. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a source of just-laid eggs from your own garden or via a generous neighbour. Use the freshest for eating and oldest for baking. The proteins in older eggs will have stretched, making them easier to separate and whip to voluminous peaks, but impossible to poach without falling apart. Egg boiling is a much-discussed topic, mainly because there are so many variables and everyone has their own preferred method. To get that lovely just-cooked

jammy yolk, I plop a largish egg at room temperature straight into boiling water for seven minutes. If you want to dip soldiers into it, go for six minutes and if you want a bit more structure for an egg mayo sandwich, boil for eight. Once they’re boiled, if you’re not going to eat them straight away, try storing in a mix of soy and vinegar with a pinch of sugar and salt – perfect with ramen or rice dishes or simply snacked on from the fridge with a little chilli oil. The mainstay of many an ‘emergency’ meal, eggs are ideal for bringing together disparate ingredients languishing in the fridge. Leftover vegetables, herbs and other ingredients are miraculously transformed into delicious fried rice, frittatas or tarts with the addition of a few eggs. I often end up with a surplus of either yolks or whites, depending on recent cooking activities. Both can be frozen or kept, covered in the fridge for a couple of days, but they start to lose their properties after a while. Excess yolks can be used in mayonnaise or other egg-based sauces, custards or carbonara, or cured in salt for a few days. Meringues are an obvious use for the whites along with madeleines and macarons, or you could use them to make homemade granola or – less wholesome but just as delightful – whisky sours. ‘Just as with interiors, it’s often the finishing touches that enhance your garden’

INDUSTRIAL SALVAGE

SPRINGTIME SHOWCASE

Old wooden wine or fruit crates are incredibly versatile and perfect for creating an informal display outdoors. This upturned one has been put into service to show off a collection of pretty spring bulbs. In autumn, plant up a selection of narcissi, tulips, hyacinths and De Caen anemones in a variety of pots in urns, then in spring, when the bulbs start to shoot, gather them together and arrange with lanterns and urns to bring some colour and cheer when not much else is in flower.

Just as with interiors, it’s often the finer details and finishing touches that really enhance the look of your garden. A tabletop space will showcase favourite plants and pots or seasonal displays. Any surface offers an opportunity for a mini arrangement of this kind. A pair of trestles topped with an old door can play host to a collection of container-grown flowering plants, while a mix of blooms such as foxgloves, lavender, nepeta, cosmos and sweet peas creates a relaxed arrangement.

ORDER AND BEAUTY A potting shed is a creative space that can be both beautiful and practical. Keep attractive pieces out on display and hide anything garish or less than lovely. Shelving is essential as somewhere to store pots, tools and plant labels. It also provides a place to style gardening items and other bits and bobs to create visual interest. Here, a pine shelf unit houses the prettiest items of gardening kit, as well as books and botanical prints, and a makeshift shelf, created by resting an old scaffolding plank on bricks, becomes the perfect spot to place a box of seed packets and a zinc bucket holding a handful of burgeoning bulbs. If there is space, bring in a table and arrange a display of potted plants and other objects that you find appealing. Having a shed or greenhouse also allows you to grow plants that need a warmer climate to thrive. The shed shown here is home to tomato seedlings and bulbs – you could even nurture a grapevine. Plunge a few blossom-laden boughs from a crab apple tree straight into a bucket of water to create a seasonal display and make a feature of drying bulbs by grouping them together and tying with string. Add a parcel tag to identify each variety and hang them on the wall – pretty and practical.

VINTAGE MAGIC The term gardenalia describes antique collectables related to gardens and gardening. Scout around car-boot sales, flea markets and reclamation yards for everything from galvanised metal watering cans and lichen-encrusted statues to French metal bistro tables and chairs that have turned alluringly rusty over time. Look out for old metal washtubs, watering cans and pails that can be used for planting. They don’t have to be in perfect condition – in fact it’s a bonus if there are holes in the base, as it saves you having to drill new ones for drainage. Ageing metal gates look great propped up against a wall as a support for climbing plants, as do old metal cart wheels. A birdcage makes for a quirky planter and even weathered tools can be turned into a feature. Think about utilising careworn pieces of furniture, such as side tables with peeling paint, as plant stands; store vintage pots in crates; give old tins a new lease of life as storage for seed packets, and use vintage baskets to hold garden tools. Sourcing gardenalia is great fun; you might spy an unusual piece and have a place for it instantly, or you could buy it and let it decorate your garden until inspiration strikes – it’s all about using your creativity. 144 housebeautiful.com/uk

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO MAKE AN ENTRANCE

H

aving recently moved, I came to the realisation that my garden is a blank canvas, waiting for me and my family to make it our own. My first thoughts were to start at the front, as this is the area that welcomes visitors. I’m lucky enough to have inherited a beautiful tiled area between the front hedge and the house, which emulates a courtyard garden. This then got me thinking of surrounding the front door with a selection of pots to house stunning plants. While I normally veer towards a simple style, the thought of being greeted every day by an environment of natural containers really appeals. One of the key elements in this style of planting is texture. Keep your colour scheme

simple, with the pots being one colour and the plants either making a statement in a contrasting shade, or complementing them in similar tones – for example, black or white pots filled with a variety of greens and white, or terracotta or zinc pots filled with purples, white and silvers. The plants should be different heights, allowing each to fill its own space. You can use trellis or hanging planters to create the look. Arranging the pots at the front door will create a symmetry that leads you inside. If you have space, add a bench and lanterns to give visitors the warmest welcome possible. Q&A Is it important to stake and support plants even if they’re in a container? In a word: yes. It is vital to support plants as they grow in order to allow the stems to strengthen as the plants strive for light. Supports will stop them falling over in the process and avoid distorted growth. t’s a fact that there’s never enough storage space in the average bedroom to keep spare duvets, bedding, clothing (the list is endless) without cluttering up what should be your sanctuary. he house and gardens at Giverny, which are full of delphiniums, peonies, colourful bridges and weeping willows, provided impressionist artist Claude Monet with inspiration for his work. On this four-day tour, you’ll explore the lovingly restored gardens in the

Adjoa Andoh, Bridgerton’s Lady Danbury, on birds, blossom and bold walls belonged to my step grandfather, who was a missionary in Ghana, and I picked up others in the same design in Brixton market. My biggest bargain is…

In the garden, I’ve found Victorian tiles and an intact iron range cooker, which took me nine hours to dig out! I’ve got floor-to-ceiling windows – it’s open plan with open staircases. It’s beautiful and spacious. My childhood home was…

A little flat in Leeds, where we lived until I was four. Then we moved to a tiny farming village in the Cotswolds into a 16th-century terraced cottage, with two-foot-thick walls, stone-clad floors and inglenook fireplaces. It was a lovely rural English environment – lots of cows and sheep. I can milk cows by hand! Right now… I’ve finished filming series
