Originally founded in the early 1970s, Sawgrass Country Club’s member amenities include a championship golf course, clubhouse, tennis club, beach club, and fitness center. Despite the club’s impressive reputation, the Health and Fitness Center was never consistent with the club’s other amenities. ELM was asked to develop a refined project program and plan for the Health and Fitness Center consisting of cardio and group fitness, a pool for lap swimming and aqua-aerobics, spa treatment room, kids care, restrooms, parking, and outdoor play space.

Timuquana Country Club, located in Jacksonville’s Ortega neighborhood, has long included replacement of its existing pool as a priority in its long-range master plan. ELM’s conceptual design involves the removal of the current pool, built in the 1960s, and replacing it with a more contemporary and functional pool that allows club members to take full advantage of the club’s frontage along the St. Johns River. The pool’s new design will include a zero-entry area with interactive fountains, a lap swimming area, landscape enhancements, shade structures and increased space for lounge and seating. Additional improvements to the pool and deck areas include architectural modifications to the lower level of the clubhouse building, restroom upgrades, additional storage facilities and the design of a food and beverage venue. The more contemporary design of the pool and deck area will better serve Timuquana County Club’s multigenerational membership, and will be more intentionally oriented to draw attention to the riverfront club’s natural beauty.

TAC O M A YAC H T CLUB Tacoma, Washington CLIENT Tacoma Yacht Club YEAR 2016 SERVICES PROVIDED Club improvement plan Clubhouse renovation planning

Celebrating a legacy dating back to 1888, Tacoma Yacht Club is one of the West Coast’s most historic private clubs. ELM was engaged by the Tacoma Yacht Club to create a comprehensive club improvement plan for their aging clubhouse facility, built in the early 1970’s along the western bank of Commencement Bay. Club improvements were designed to coincide with a multi-million dollar restoration of Point Defiance Park and the environmental remediation of the club’s peninsula, a Superfund site which for decades was a slag repository for the Asarco smelter. Working closely with the club’s board, ELM prepared an improvement plan to adapt to the contextual site improvements and to renovate and transform the club’s outdated facility into a dramatic new clubhouse, taking advantage of the impressive waterfront setting and creating inspired new informal member dining, bar, and banquet venues. ELM created a phased implementation plan, allowing the club to make much needed near-term improvements within the context of a well-conceived overall clubhouse design.
