Turn to page 52 for a list of key events happening in Harrogate & The Dales in 2015.

Welcome to Go Yorkshire’s Guide for 2015 The handsome spa town of Harrogate is the ideal place to amble, absorb the atmosphere and indulge yourself. Victorian architecture and cosmopolitan streets, full of select shops, galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes are surrounded by 200 acres of town centre grassland known as The Stray. The thriving conference centre boasts many exhibitions and the calendar is full of events and festivals throughout the year. The Yorkshire Dales are just on the doorstep - a truly unique region of contrasts and beauty. They straddle the Pennines, spanning North Yorkshire, the southern fringes of rural Cumbria and urban outskirts of West Yorkshire. The countryside is so spectacular that large parts of it are in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, one of only 15 areas in Britain preserved and maintained for their natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. It has to be seen to be appreciated. There are 20 main Dales, including the more dramatic and upland areas of Arkengarthdale, Wensleydale and Swaledale. The lower southern areas of Airedale, Wharefedale and Nidderdale are gentler with rolling hills and pasture land. Early farmers cleared the woodland and developed the trademark patchwork of fields enclosed by dry stone walls that are such a recognised sight in this stunning area. We deliver our guides to over 6,000 places in Yorkshire so we are pretty confident we know a thing or two about the best places to visit, to stay and eat and the hidden places to discover. For more information check out the Go Yorkshire website www.goyorkshire.com and Go Yorkshire app available on smart phones and Iphone for itinerary planners, offers and what’s happening throughout the county in 2015. One thing we are sure of is that you will discover on visiting our great county, one visit in definitely not enough! We wish you the warmest welcome for 2015 from all the team at Elmtree Press.

Swaledale is the most northerly valley in the Yorkshire Dales and runs from west to east. A deep v shaped valley, it is characterised by the stone barns that protect livestock in the harsh winters, and in summer the patchwork of fields, framed by the dry stone walls that are typical of this area, are full of buttercups and wild flowers, giving the valley floor a golden glow. From the dramatic moorland vistas at the Cumbia/Yorkshire border, the valley reaches down to the thriving market town of Richmond with its amazing 12th Century castle. At the top of the Dale, a number of smaller dales, Birkdale, Little and Great Sleddale and quaintly named Whitsundale form Upper Swaledale. Birkdale Beck and Great Sleddale Beck join to form the River Swale that gently meanders down the valley then broadens out through the pretty villages of Muker, Gunnerside and Reeth. After Richmond the valley becomes broader still and the Swale eventually joins the River Ure which in turn, after merging with the River Trent and Humber, joins the North Sea at Hull. Sheep Farming is the only type of farming possible in the upper reaches of the valley and is a way of life that has continued for hundreds of years. Farmers obtain permits to graze their sheep on the common land and the number of sheep each farmer is allowed is strictly controlled. You will see grazing on the hills and valley below. The famous Swaledale sheep, with their thick straight, off-white coats, distinctive black and white faces and curled horns, have been bred to cope with the adverse weathers conditions and are found throughout the more mountainous areas of Great Britain, but particularly in County Durham, Yorkshire, and the lower fells of Cumbria.

For more information on Richmond and all it has to offer see their advert on page 12.

Remember to pick up a copy of the Go Yorkshire Mini Guide or download the app for discount vouchers and offers for venues across Yorkshire. DON’T MISS The Swaledale Festival takes place over two weeks in May and June each year. Halls, pubs, fields and the occasional castle around Swaledale, Arkengarthdale and Wensleydale house the Festival. Small-scale classical chamber music, choral music, folk music, brass bands and jazz feature, as do talks, films, exhibitions, poetry readings, workshops and guided walks. The 2015 Festival runs from Saturday 23rd May to the 6th June and features the King’s Singers, the Royal Northern Sinfonia and many others. Tan Hill Pub lies at 1,732 feet and is the highest pub in England. Roads from Brough, Arkengarthdale and Keld meet at this point and situated on the popular walking route of the Pennine Way it offers walkers a welcome place to stop for an enjoyable meal or a bed for the night. The wonderful waterfalls of Swinner Gill and Wain Wath are situated near the tiny village of Keld, in upper Swaledale. The Buttertubs Pass is a high road in the Yorkshire Dales. The road winds its way north from Simonstone near Hawes towards Thwaite and Muker past 20 metre deep limestone potholes called the Buttertubs. It is said that the name of the potholes came from the times when farmers would rest there on their way to market. During hot weather they would lower the butter they had produced into the potholes to keep it cool. The road is locally noted as a challenging cycle climb, and featured as the second of three King of the Mountain climbs in Stage One of the 2014 Tour de France Above Grinton, on the road over the moor to Leyburn are the remains of Old Gang Lead Mine near Reeth. The Romans first discovered lead in Swaledale and used the local tribe known as the Brigantes as slaves to work with the miners. Evidence of lead mining can be found all over the Dales today. Lead is found in veins and the ‘ore shoots’ are up to half a mile long and as deep as 100ft . The lead was extracted by diverting streams to flush the lead out of the open veins down the hillside to be collected in the valley below. Mining continued until the late nineteenth century, when the price of lead plummeted, the miners departed and an eerie silence descended on the dale. The hay meadows that line the valley are full of beautiful wild flowers such as sweet vernal-grass, pignut, red fescue, Yorkshire fog, common sorrel and lady’s mantle. You may also pick out the common spotted-orchid, bistort, melancholy thistle and globeflower. Botanical surveys here have shown up to 30 different species in a single square metre. The beautiful Georgian market town of Richmond, has reputedly the largest market place in Britain. With its stunning architecture, Norman castle, waterfalls and walks along the River Swale as well as a popular cinema and arts centre, it is well worth visiting.

Fountains Abbey. Photo Credit: Chris Lacey The Eastern Dales is a good place to use as a base for your stay. The city of Ripon with its fine medieval cathedral and attractive market square, has a wealth of quality attractions and museums to visit, and there is a good selection of shops and restaurants and a weekly market on a Thursday. Nearby on the road to Nidderdale is the world famous Heritage site of Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal. Nidderdale, known as little Switzerland because of its steep inclines, and the ravine at How Stean Gorge, is dominated by two large reservoirs and is a beautiful valley to walk in and explore, with the popular walking route, the Nidderdale Way spanning the valley. There are many interesting geographical features, the old mine workings high up on the scar, traditional barns and farmsteads as well as the wondrous Brimham Rocks with its strange formations. Newby Hall & Gardens

It is a beautiful drive down the valley to Lofthouse and up over the top and across the moor. There is approximately 11 miles of remote single moorland track road before you spot Leighton Reservoir in the valley below, and is a challenging, but exhilarating drive. By the time you reach Masham you will be in need of refreshments and there is no better place to end your journey as in this lovely town. With two of the finest independent Yorkshire breweries based here, Theakstons and the Black Sheep Brewery, it is a beer lover’s idea of heaven. Enjoy a pint of the finest Yorkshire Bitter and take a brewery tour at either or both of the breweries. With interesting shops and cafes this is a bustling little town. With its mellow Yorkshire stone buildings and large cobbled market square, there is always something going on and a host of events throughout the year.

Soak up the atmosphere amidst the magnificent abbey ruins, the largest and most complete in the country, and be charmed by the graceful water garden where cascades flow into mirror-like pools. This summer seek out the follies in the water garden. These whimsical buildings will be transformed from their original use by some of the country’s most inventive artists and designers.

Follow paths through tree-lined avenues in the deer park, find a hidden herb garden beneath the Elizabethanstyle façade of Fountains Hall, and take inspiration from the richly decorated interior of St Mary’s Church. There are lots of great events happening in and around Leyburn this year so please see the advert on page 23 for more details.

The Yorkshire Dales market town of Leyburn boasts a host of small, independent shops, cafes and pubs which crowd around the cobbled main square. It is a destination of choice for visitors from all over the world and makes an excellent base for walking breaks in North Yorkshire, with spectacular views across the River Ure from the famous Leyburn Shawl, an escarpment of about 1.5 miles in length, which is just a short walk west from the town centre. It is accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs and has seats ideally placed to admire views of Wensleydale and beyond. According to legend, Mary, Queen of Scots, upon fleeing captivity in nearby Bolton Castle, dropped her shawl en route to Leyburn. The Shawl is the start of several circular walks taking in the nearby village of Wensley, from where Wensleydale takes its name. Bolton Castle is also within easy reach and is one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles, steeped in over 600 years of history. There are wild boar and birds of prey to see and a Medieval maze garden to meander through. Leyburn is Lower Wensleydale’s commercial hub and welcomes local traders to a bustling market every Friday, when farmers also flock to town for weekly livestock auctions. There is a wide diversity of unusual shops to visit too. Emma Sedman is a local Jeweller who always has fabulous unique items on show. Just across the road and round the corner, lady visitors can be assured of a warm welcome and lovely clothes in Buzz Boutique and just a few doors up is the local food store Campbells which is famous for its local produce and fine selection of locally raised meat, and is the recent winner of the Herriott Awards in the independent supermarket category. Don’t forget to pop in to see Ken in Leyburn Antiques Centre at the bottom of the market square. He always has lots of fascinating things on display, including old household items which give a taste of life in a simpler era!

Forbidden Corner

Wilford’s of Leyburn offer a wide selection of high quality clothing, boots etc – everything you need for your country pursuits. Pop in to the aptly named Quaint and Quirky next door. You will find lots of unusual gifts on sale, perfect for mementos of your holiday. Leyburn is home to the internationally famous Tennants Auction House which holds general and specialist catalogue sales throughout the year. It has become a regular on many antique programmes attracting buyers and collectors from around the world and has just undergone a multi-million pound extension to create “The Garden Rooms” for auctions, the arts, education and events with additional sale rooms, an art gallery, new restaurant, cafe’s and events space, it is simply stunning. In these days of mass-markets and mega-stores, shops that boast character with varied stock feel hard to come by. Those so-called “Aladdin’s Caves”, passed down through generations, are in-fact thriving in the North Yorkshire market towns of Leyburn & Bedale. The secret of House and Home’s success, is the range and quality of what they offer and at very competitive prices. So forget the large department stores and kitchenware chains, you will certainly save money and be spoilt for choice. Annually there is a Dales Festival of Food and Drink, held over May Day bank holiday weekend where you can sample hand-made chocolates, locally-produced Wensleydale beer, ice-cream, cheese and produce from local farms. Special events include an annual 1940s Weekend in July and the Wensleydale Show, which is held over the August bank holiday weekend. For a century after its charter in 1202, Wensley had the only market in the dale and this continued into the 16th century. Just down the hill from Leyburn nestles the village of Middleham which is famous for its horse racing heritage with numerous trainers having stables here. Middleham Castle, the childhood home of Richard 3rd, is situated behind the town and the very popular Forbidden Corner, a secret garden full of surprises, is only a short drive away in neighbouring Coverdale. Middleham trainers open their stables to the public annually on Good Friday to raise funds for the Jockeys Benevolent Trust, but on most mornings it is possible to view potential Grand National winners trotting through the village on their way up to the Gallops. After your busy day, why not treat yourself to a fabulous meal at the Saddle Room at Tupgill Park in Coverdale, you will not be disappointed.

Upper Wensleydale is perfect walking country. Whether enjoying the beautiful wild flowers in the summer or admiring the craggy fells in the winter, there are always lots of well signposted walks to enjoy. Flagged footpaths to the villages around Hawes and Askrigg are especially attractive and the Pennine Way traverses the Dales, north to south. Prehistoric people lived here. Earthworks remain and artefacts from the Bronze and Iron Ages can be seen in the Dales Countryside Museum, Hawes. The Roman fort at Bainbridge can be found near the confluence of the River Bain with the River Ure. Wensleydale was not just a farming area. Trade and industry flourished in past times. Alongside farming, quarrying, lead and coal mining prospered. Cottage industries also thrived. Many Dales people, both young and old, created hand knitted garments from local wool, which were then sent off to market. The Dales were designated a National Park in 1954 in recognition of the many wildlife habitats and historical features. The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority was created to “protect the Park’s landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage, in order to maintain its beauty and character for the quiet enjoyment of present and future generations”.

As well as being surrounded by three areas of outstanding natural beauty, miles of walking and cycling trails, plus stunning scenery, the Yorkshire Dales National Park is full of picturesque villages and bustling market towns which are thriving. Shopping takes on a whole new meaning in Yorkshire and even the most anti-shopper will find themselves entranced and enthralled by a different kind of experience rather than the Saturday rush to the supermarket. It is a pleasure, not a chore to stroll around the streets, admiring the beautiful architecture, and enjoy exploring and discovering quality independent shops and craftsmen offering unique and desirable gifts. The other attractive feature is the free or low cost parking fees which are a fraction of what you are expected to pay in the cities and many towns today. This enables you to park for longer and enjoy the amenities on offer. The towns of Harrogate, Skipton and Leyburn all offer quality shopping and Harrogate hosts the premier annual trade Gift Fair in spring each year, attracting many buyers from across the UK who know a thing or two about shopping and enjoy the pleasures of staying in this beautiful spa town. Indeed, despite fierce competition from many other towns and cities across the UK, Harrogate, with its excellent conference centre, quality

hotels, shops and restaurants and general ambience of wellbeing, is very much the preferred choice of many conferences and trade organisations. Dotted about the hills and Dales are artists and craftsmen who have chosen to have made Yorkshire their home. Inspired by the beautiful scenery and tranquil surroundings it is a place where they can expand their minds and take motivation from the natural surroundings, the charming architecture and the colourful characters of Yorkshire folk. Many have workshops or open for the Open Studios week where you can view and buy their work. For a selection of the shops we recommend seeking out throughout Yorkshire, do take a look at our shopping trail on page 26.

The beautiful Georgian spa town of Harrogate, with its lively atmosphere and handsome architecture imbues a sense of affluence and wellbeing. The cosmopolitan streets have a good selection of interesting and diverse shops, galleries, museums, restaurants and cafes as well as 200 acres of town centre grassland known as The Stray. We can’t fail to mention the 19th century Turkish Baths where you can relax and unwind. The town has a proud tradition as a historical spa where you can still take the waters at the Royal Pump Rooms. The saline sulphur bath was the treatment on which Harrogate’s reputation was built. It consists of two waters, saline sulphur water which is good for gout, rheumatism and liver problems, and alkaline sulphur water which is very effective in treating skin diseases. If, however, you prefer a drink rather than a soak, you might find the famous Harrogate Spring Water rather more palatable and don’t forget our lovely Yorkshire Tea! Harrogate is the ideal place to amble and indulge in all that’s on offer. It is also a fearsome devotee of Britain in Bloom and has carried off many awards. At any time of the year there may be dazzling floral displays that bring out the best of this picturesque town. Famous for its many antique shops and galleries, Harrogate boasts a wonderful collection of art and holds major exhibitions at the Mercer Art Gallery. It is also home to the RHS Garden Harlow Carr a must for gardeners. It is a quiet and peaceful oasis situated just outside the town centre. The neighbouring picturesque market town of Knaresborough is perched high above the River Nidd where you can hire a rowing boat to while away an afternoon or enjoy exploring Knaresborough Castle and the Old Court House Museum which houses local items and a gallery devoted to the Civil War.

Yorkshire is well known as ‘God’s Own Country’, but it is also celebrated as the land of plenty. Quality local produce is in evidence everywhere. It may surprise you that we still have a butcher in nearly every town and some villages as well, a rare occurrence these days. Local suppliers mean that the butchers know where the meat and game they sell has come from, and the freshly baked pork pies and delicacies on offer also show skills and knowledge passed down through the generations. What better way of sampling the local produce than to have a picnic lunch, nothing tastes better whilst spending the day walking, or stopping to admire the view on a drive. Local markets offer fish and vegetables, again many of the greengrocers supply the local hotels and restaurants so the produce is always very fresh and locally sourced. With the East Coast only a short distance away, fish is always fresh and plentiful. We recommend Carrick’s who have stalls at the markets in Bedale, Thirsk, Northallerton, Richmond, Leyburn and Ripon and a shop in Snape, they also have their own fishing boat based at Whitby and will always be happy to advise you on the best catch of the day. The renaissance of restaurants offering innovative dishes using delicious and locally sourced food has grown in recent years and for the holiday maker or those with time to explore there is much to discover. Many of the picturesque villages have quaint pubs, where you can sample the local beer and sample home cooked food so for the food and beer lover you could happily spend the duration of your holiday eating your way around the Dales, it truly is a gourmet’s delight!

Skipton, the capital town of Wharfedale is often referred to as the ‘Gateway to the Dales.’ Crowned by its magnificent Norman castle and the bustling high street full of independent shops and cafes, it is easy see why. A market lines the high street four days a week and the local calendar is peppered with festivals and events throughout the year. For a great introduction to the Dales, Pennine Cruisers run excursions from one hour to all day boat trips along the canal. Pack up a picnic lunch and catch the Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway from the Embsay station, (parking is free), and take a scenic ride into the Dales to visit Bolton Abbey only a short walk from the station. The Southern Dales scenery is dominated by Wharfedale with its wide sweeping valley and river, the moorland uplands that turn purple in late August and the woods that hug the riverbanks. Neighbouring Airedale, which borders the urban outskirts of West Yorkshire, is where the River Aire starts life in Malham and makes its way down past Skipton on to Keighley, Bingley and Shipley, through to Leeds and Castleford and on to join the River Ouse at Airmyn in East Yorkshire. The area gives its name to the Airedale Terrier the largest of the Terrier breed of dogs. They were first bred in the area in the early nineteenth century. Easy access and excellent train links from nearby Leeds, Bradford and Manchester make this part of the Dales very popular for days out for city dwellers, who tend to favour hot spots such as Bolton Abbey and the picturesque village of Burnsall which are always popular especially on a sunny day. However, there are still many places to explore and escape the crowds, and for those that are prepared to walk, or enjoy exploring off the beaten track, there are plenty of delightful spots along the river Wharfe and fell walks where you will hardly meet a soul all day. The smaller dale Littondale is delightful and the road over to Malham from Arncliffe is a spectacular drive. The circular walk from

Malham village, climbing up the steep steps and over to Gorsdale Scar, returning to the village along the river by Janet’s Foss waterfall is a walk we recommend all visitors should undertake if able, as the views and landscape are quite spectacular. Even for the disabled there is good wheelchair access to the cove itself to be able to see the magnificence of this natural spectacle and you can spend hours watching the star attraction of Peregrine Falcons who nest in the Cove.

Skipton Castle

The Yorkshire Dales National Park have two excellent centres at Malham and the picturesque town of Grassington where there are popular walks across the falls to the delightful village of Linton or along the River Wharfe. Alternatively continue down to the foot of Wharfedale to pretty Kettlewell, the capital of Upper Wharfedale, once an important centre for trade it was granted a market charter in the 13th century. Take a walk up Great Whernside and on your return there are pubs and cafes to satisfy your need for refreshments or a welcome pint of Theakstons or Black Sheep bitter! Alternatively if you prefer a day’s touring, a visit to the neighbouring valley of Wensleydale and its many attractions, is a lovely day out. There is an excellent circular route through the village of Buckden and over the tops through Bishopdale where you choose to turn left after West Burton (a village worth stopping to explore and view the falls) and explore Hawes and Upper Wensleydale or alternatively, turn right and enjoy the delightful town of Leyburn, and the attractions of lower Wensleydale returning through Coverdale. Whichever route you choose do remember the roads are narrow and steep in places, so take your time, stop off and explore. For more information please see our website for recommended places to visit.

The Yorkshire Dales National Park has thirty-six percent of Britain’s limestone pavement. The most famous stretch is on the top of Malham Cove Established in 1884, the world famous Hardraw Scaur Brass Band Festival is Britain’s second oldest outdoor contest and takes place annually on the second Sunday of September. Yorkshire provides a choice of over 4,800 hotels, guesthouses, self-catering units and campsites with enough bed space to accommodate the entire population of France over the course of a single year. Pateley Bridge near Harrogate is home to England’s oldest sweet shop, established in 1827 and still open today. It displays over 200 jars of sweets from pear drops to lollipops. The Yorkshire Dales is home to England’s largest single drop waterfall, Hardraw Force, a reputed 100 foot drop, as well as Britain’s highest pub, the Tan Hill Inn, at 1,732ft above sea level. Yorkshire is home to two UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Studley Royal in North Yorkshire, one of the first to be designated in the UK, and more recently Saltaire Village in West Yorkshire. The Keighley and Worth Valley Railway featured in the original film of The Railway Children.

HARROGATE

Springs were discovered in Harrogate over four centuries ago; Harrogate is unique as a spa town because of the wide variety of waters. Richard Ellis was a self-made man who devoted himself to public affairs in Harrogate. His last great scheme was the promotion of the idea for an internationalquality bathing and hydrotherapy centre which was to become the Royal Baths. The Royal Baths were officially opened in 1897 and were said to be the most advanced centre for hydrotherapy in the world. The Royal Baths, one of Harrogate’s premier listed buildings, were built by Baggalley and Bristowe of London at a cost of £120,000. The baths boast Moorish designs with great Islamic arches and screens. There are walls of vibrant glazed brickwork, arabesque painted ceilings and terrazzo floors which were laid by the very best Italian experts . The baths were popular with members of Royal families from around the world and a particular favourite of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters. Harrogate is sometimes known as the Kensington of the North. It was once two small villages, High and Low Harrogate, situated near to Knaresborough.

RIPON

Harrogate’s Turkish Baths and Health Spa is one of only seven remaining 19th Century Turkish baths in the UK, and is the most historically complete. They underwent a major refurbishment in the late 1990s but essentially, the baths are

P: 44

intact and very little alteration has taken place over the years.

Ripon was the first chartered city in Britain with a charter granted back in 886. Its cathedral is even older with elements dating back to 672.

A wakeman still blows a horn at each corner of the market square in Ripon every night, signaling vigilance against enemies, the tradition unbroken for a millennium and more.

KNARESBOROUGH Mother Shipton’s Cave and Petrifying Well is England’s oldest visitor attraction and is the only one of its kind in England. It was first opened in 1630 by Sir Charles Slingsby who bought this section of the former royal park from Charles 1st. 3,200 gallons of water flow over the well every hour whatever the weather, and it takes between three and five months to petrify a teddy bear!

BEDALE The Leech House in Bedale dates back to the late 18th Century and was used to store leeches until they were needed by the local doctors. The local chemist would collect the required number in a special jar and deliver them. An underground Ice House is located in the South West corner of Bedale Park and is open to the public only once a year. The church bells of St Gregory’s Church in Bedale were taken from the ruins of Jervaulx Abbey and are still regularly rung today.

Whatever your tastes, your age and your budget and whichever direction you decide to head, you will discover the diversity of Yorkshire. Within half an hour of Skipton is the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth, home to the Brontë sisters. The main cobbled street that leads down from the Parsonage is a lively thoroughfare, full of independent and quirky shops and cafes. Great transport links from West Yorkshire mean that Leeds and Bradford are within easy reach by car or train or head north on the famous Settle to Carlisle line for a day out in Appleby or Carlisle. York is a beautiful city and whether it is the first visit or you have visited before, it is always a great day out. You will be spoilt for choice at the number of museums and attractions to visit all within walking distance of the city centre. One of our favourites is the National Railway Museum which is situated very near York Station; it is an informative and enjoyable Museum to visit. Afterwards you can catch the York City Sightseeing Open Topped Bus from outside the exit of the museum which is an excellent introduction to the city and a great way to learn about the history of York. A day’s ticket enables you to hop on and hop off so that you can explore the city at your leisure. For those that want to learn about the city’s gruesome past, a visit to York is not complete without a trip to York Dungeon, the fun and lively performances of the actors keeps their audience entertained! The North York Moors National Park is within an hour’s drive from the Eastern and Northern Dales and the coast is only a little further away. A day walking in the forests on the Cleveland Hills or on the moors along ancient tracks, is a complete contrast to the rolling Yorkshire Dales. It is great horse riding country and there are plenty of cycleways along forest tracks to explore.

A surprisingly undiscovered corner of England is the Eden Valley, a green and fertile valley with rolling hills that lies east of Penrith and the M6. The Yorkshire Dales forms its southern boundary and, to the north, the Pennines. The landscape is peppered with Pele towers and ruined castles at Pendragon, Lammerside near Kirkby Stephen, and Brough Castle, which serve as a reminder of the turbulent and violent past when, in medieval times, the marauding Scots would raid the land. Appleby Castle is open for tours so please contact Appleby Tourist Information Centre for further details. The River Eden rises in Mallerstang, a beautiful and remote valley that is a wonderful route which traverses the Dales to the southern area of the Lake District. The river flows north through the old market towns of Kirkby Stephen and Appleby and is one of the finest salmon and trout rivers in the North of England, where you can enjoy some great riverside walks. As the river moves northward towards the sea beyond Carlisle it becomes broader and slower but has dramatic moments, at Armathwaite and Little Salkeld for example, where sandstone cliffs plunge down to the water. The Settle to Carlisle Railway roughly follows the line of the River, with stations at Settle, Horton in Ribblesdale, Ribblehead, Dent, Garsdale, Kirkby Stephen, Appleby, Langwathby, Lazonby, Armathwaite and Carlisle and is one of the most scenic train rides in Britain. As well as the usual scheduled services, weekly charter trains run on the line as well. The magnificent sight of a steam train running over one of the many viaducts, the most famous being the Ribblehead Viaduct, make excellent photo opportunities for the keen photographer. The historic market town of Appleby was developed as the market town of Westmorland after the Norman Conquest because of having a strategic position in the beautiful Eden Valley. The town is overlooked by the privately owned Appleby Castle, of Norman origins, which was the home of Lady Anne Clifford in the 17th century. It makes an excellent centre for exploring the

P: 52

Appleby in Westmorland surrounding area and soaking up the scenery. The riverside walks and superb fishing are wonderful for keen anglers. It is normally a very quiet and peaceful backwater but in early June it is home to the annual Appleby Horse Fair which attracts Travellers from all over Britain. The fair is one of the oldest horse fairs in Britain. It is held outside the town at a crossroads on the Roman Road near to Gallows Hill (named after the public hangings that were once carried out there.) Most horse trading takes place on Long Marton Road, (known as the ‘flashing lane’ or “Mad Mile”) where horses are shown off (or ‘flashed’) by trotting up and down the lane, and also on ‘the sands’, which is near the town centre beside the river Eden, where horses are ridden into the river to be washed. Besides the horses, there are fortune tellers, palm readers, music stalls, clothing stalls, tools, china, stainless steel, and of course horse-related merchandise including harness and carriages to view. Girls wear their finest attire for the fair which is traditionally a place for marriages to be arranged. It was recently featured in a Channel 4 show, My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. For more information of places to stay, eat and shop look at www.applebycumbria.co.uk The North Pennines is often called England’s last wilderness. A remote and special place, it is home to red squirrels and many varieties of bridge of prey. Spanning 770 square miles, it is the second largest of the AONB (areas of outstanding natural beauty) family. Only the Cotswolds is larger, and it is bigger than all but two of the English and Welsh National Parks. Only the Lake District and Snowdonia are larger. Created in 1988 to safeguard its moorland scenery, it became Britain’s first Geopark in 2003, in recognition of the special and fragile landscape of peatlands and heather moors, wild flowers and fauna, secret woods and upland rivers. The North Pennines lies within the counties of Durham, Cumbria, Northumberland, and North Yorkshire and crosses two English regions – the North East and the North West.

Settle-Carlisle Railway

THE SETTLE–CARLISLE RAILWAY Take a trip on one of the most beautiful train rides in Britain. Learn about its history, the hard work in building and maintaining this iconic line and help support this amazing railway for future generations to enjoy. The dilemma is there are so many stations to stop off at, and places to discover en route, which will you choose?

Raby Castle

RABY CASTLE Set in the Durham Dales, it is one of the best-preserved castles in North East England. Lord Barnard’s home provides over 600 years of history and a glimpse of life throughout the Middle Ages. Enjoy a family day out exploring the castle, spotting wildlife in the 200 acre deer park or enjoying the pretty walled gardens, whilst the kids let off steam in the woodland playground, and afterwards enjoy a delicious lunch or cream tea in the cosy tearooms.

HIGH FORCE The highest waterfall in Britain plunges 70 feet into a pool below and is a breathtaking sight. The well maintained path twists and turns, winding down through the woods, and gives tantalising glimpses of the waterfalls as you descend. The muffled rumble of the water turns to a roar as you get nearer and at your final descent, the sight and sound of the rushing water will astound you. One of the most beautiful drives in this part of the world is the drive to the falls through villages studded with white washed cottages and beautiful flower meadows.

Settle is a picturesque market town and home to the famous SettleCarlisle Railway. It is also gateway to the wild and lovely Forest of Bowland and the dramatic scars and limestone landscape of Upper Ribblesdale, great for challenging walks, cycling and horse riding. Known collectively as the Three Peaks, the hills of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-y-ghent, are all over 700 metres high. The peaks, which form part of the Pennine range, encircle the heads of the valleys of the River Ribble and of Chapel-le-Dale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Whernside (736 metres) does not look quite as imposing as the other two peaks, being more rounded in nature, but is actually the highest peak and its summit is the highest point in North Yorkshire. Ingleborough (723 metres) is without doubt the most popular of all hills in the Yorkshire Dales with easy access from Ingleton or Clapham. Its distinctive rounded shape with a flat top, was once home to an ancient hill fort and has stunning views, particularly across to the Ribblehead Viaduct. Pen-y-ghent (694 metres) is a marvellous hill. The profile of Pen-y-ghent is dramatic

from all aspects and is usually the start of the of the popular Three Peaks challenge. As you ascend the hill it resembles a sitting lion. And a lion of an ascent it is too, for the final push to the top up its southern face, is as close to a scramble as one will face in the Dales. The limestone strata of the Yorkshire Dales houses an extensive network of caves, including White Scar Cave, which has the longest show cave in Britain, and was discovered by Christopher Long back in 1923. The potholes and underground network of caves attract cavers from all over the country, especially the Gaping Gill network which is on the southern slopes of Ingleborough and is home to England’s highest unbroken waterfall which plunges underground dropping 110 m vertically down a pothole, into Britain’s second largest cavern. Visitors can take a floodlit tour of the part of the cave system where the beck re-emerges further down the mountain, near to Ingleborough Cave . These beautiful caves were opened up as a tourist attraction back in 1837 by the Farrer family who also rebuilt Ingleborough Hall.

The annual Overground Underground Festival is held on 21st & 22nd June 2015.

MUST SEE & DO Visit picturesque Clapham and walk to the beautiful Ingleborough Caves just above the village. For the energetic, climb one of the three peaks See the Ribblehead Viaduct Take a ride on the Settle to Carlisle Line Explore the extensive White Scar Cave and see the longest show cave in Britain Enjoy a walk around the Ingleton Waterfalls trail

There are two long distance footpaths bisecting the area. The Pennine Way crosses the summit of Pen-y-ghent and the Ribble Way follows the River Ribble from its source at the foot of Whernside, and of course the most famous walk is the Three Peaks Walk, a thirty seven and a half kilometer circular walk taking in all three peaks. The small but picturesque village of Ingleton is probably one of the most visited villages in the Dales. It is known as the “Gateway to the Three Peaks” to the many walkers who visit the area each year. It nestles in the foothills of Ingleborough and sits at the foot of Yorkshire’s beautiful Limestone Dales. It is dominated by the imposing, 11 arched viaduct which is a legacy of the railway which brought the first visitors to the area. Ribblehead, at the top of Ribblesdale, is in the centre of the Three Peaks and is itself famous for the Ribblehead Viaduct where the SettleCarlisle Railway crosses the boggy moor. This was the site of an infamous shanty town during the railway construction, a task which required many tunnels, viaducts and bridges, and cost many lives. The ascent of Whernside is tackled from the Ribblehead area.

Ingleton is situated at the junction of two rivers, the River Twiss from Kingsdale and the River Doe from Chapel le Dale. Ingleton was mentioned in the Domesday Book and its name means “Beacon Town”, and was originally settled in the Iron Age by the Brigantes. Ingleton hosts the annual “Overground Underground Festival”. It takes place on June 21st and 22nd this year and is a celebration of activities which all the family can enjoy together, such as running, swimming, walking, biking and of course caving.

Stop for refreshments at Ye Olde Naked Man Cafe, Settle.

Below the heights of Kingsdale, the River Doe flows down the deep ravine which makes up part of the beautiful Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. The trail leads through ancient primary oak woodland. It is the habitat of valuable, although sadly diminishing wildlife and boasts one of the last colonies of our native red squirrel.
