Shooting at Trump’s Pennsylvania Rally
On Saturday July 13th, an attempted assassination took place at a rally for former President Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania. During his speech, at approximately 6:15 PM, a shooter, identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, opened fire from an elevated position outside the venue. The Secret Service quickly responded, and a sharpshooter neutralized Crooks. Despite the rapid intervention, the incident resulted in the death of Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, and critically injured two spectators
Former President Trump was grazed by a bullet on the upper part of his right ear but was quickly taken to safety. In a statement on Truth Social, he expressed his gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick response, and he extended condolences to the victims’ families. Trump described hearing the whizzing sound of the bullet and feeling it tear through his skin, causing significant bleeding
The FBI, treating the incident as a potential act of domestic terrorism, is inves-
tigating Crooks’ motives. So far, no clear motive has been identified, and Crooks had no known military affiliations. Records show he was registered as a Republican.
President Joe Biden condemned the attack, expressing relief that Trump was not seriously injured and emphasizing the need for unity against such acts of violence. He released the following statement:
“I have been briefed on the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Pennsylvania. I’m grateful to hear that he’s safe and doing well. I’m praying for him and his family and for all those who were at the rally, as we await further information. Jill and I are grateful to the Secret Service for getting him to safety. There’s no place for this kind of violence in America. We must unite as one nation to condemn it.”
On Sunday he said in remarks from the Oval Office, “I urge everyone — everyone, please, don’t make assumptions about his motives or his affiliations. Let the FBI do their job, and their partner agencies do their job. I’ve instructed that this investigation be thorough and swift.”
The shooting has prompted reactions
from various political figures. Ivanka Trump, Donald Trump’s daughter, thanked supporters for their prayers and praised law enforcement for their swift actions. Vice President Kamala Harris also condemned the violence, stressing that such acts have no place in America.
The rally was part of Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign, taking place just days before the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. The event aimed to galvanize support in a key battleground state where Trump had previously garnered significant voter support
The attack has reignited debates about political violence in the United States, with many calling for increased security measures at political events and a broader discussion on addressing the root causes of such violence. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the fragile state of political discourse and the critical importance of safeguarding democratic processes and ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation

OPINION
BY ANDRES OPPENHEIMER
Regional leaders must act fast to prevent fraud, violence in Venezuela’s elections
There are growing fears that Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro will suspend the July 28 elections or announce a ban on opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is leading by a wide margin in the polls.
Washington and Latin American democracies should do something — and fast — to prevent these or other last-minute Maduro ploys.
One idea that is circulating in diplomatic circles is sending a mission of Latin American foreign ministers to Venezuela to observe the elections, perhaps accompanied by a bipartisan delegation of U.S. legislators.
The mission would be made up of both friends and critics of the Venezuelan regime. It could include Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Argentina and Guatemala, and could offer itself as a mediator between the government and the opposition in case of a disputed election result, supporters of the idea say. But so far, no country has publicly endorsed this proposal.
Fears that Maduro will seek an excuse to suspend the elections or ban the leading opposition candidate have risen in recent days. In addition to the polls showing an opposition advantage, it has become clear that opposition rallies are drawing much bigger crowds than Maduro’s, despite the regime’s massive use of state resources to drag people to his campaign rallies.
Maduro suffered a propaganda blow during a recent campaign rally in the city of San Cristobal, in the western state of Táchira, when an open mike caught him complaining to the local governor about the size of the crowd. “This doesn’t look good... few people,” Maduro said, according to press reports.
A new poll released by Hercon Consultores shows Gonzalez Urrutia leading with 68.4% of the vote, compared to Maduro’s 27.3%. Another poll by Datanalisis, looking at various scenarios, has Gonzalez Urrutia leading by a margin of between 18% and
25% of the vote.
When I asked opposition candidate Gonzalez Urrutia in a July 5 interview whether he fears that Maduro will suspend the election or ban him from running rather than risk a defeat, he responded that it may be too late for the regime to do such things this close to election day.
“Of course they can do it, because this is a government that doesn’t have any limits to resort to tricks like that,” Gonzalez Urrutia told me. “But it would be a public admission that they’re lost. I don’t think they’ll risk taking that decision.”
But privately, many opposition leaders tell me that in the face of the latest polls, Maduro may indeed use any pretext to suspend the election, or ban Gonzalez Urrutia, as he has previously done with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado.
Despite the regime’s measures to curtail opposition votes, such as prohibiting more than 4.5 million Venezuelans abroad from registering, Maduro may conclude that he won’t be able to rig the vote count on election night if the opposition turns out massively, opposition sources tell me.
Carlos Vecchio, former interim President Juan Guaidó’s ambassador to Washington, is among those who support the idea of a regional foreign ministers’ mediation mission to Venezuela.
“We may see moments of high political conflict that day,” Vecchio told me. “An onsite mission of Latin American foreign ministers could have access to both sides, and help keep Maduro from doing something crazy.”
While not specifically mentioning a foreign ministers’ mission, Gonzalez Urrutia told me that he has talked with several Latin American presidents in recent days and urged them to get involved in the Venezuelan elections.
“I’m calling on all members of the international community to follow Venezuela’s electoral process closely, to pay attention to what will happen on election day,” Gonzalez Urrutia said. He added that it’s in Latin American countries’ own interest to be “guarantors” of a peaceful transition in Venezuela.
Indeed, an estimated 8 million Venezuelans have already fled their country in recent years, straining the resources of many Latin American countries and triggering a migration crisis in the United States. Millions more may flee Venezuela to countries in the region if Maduro steals the elections, and there is a new cycle of political violence, on top of the country’s lingering economic crisis.
History could repeat itself. When Maduro fraudulently reelected himself in 2018, there were widespread protests, and government death squads were responsible for more than 7,000 extrajudicial deaths, according to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights office.
Unless Washington and Latin American democracies act quickly and send a regional mission to Venezuela, Maduro will probably rig the vote on election day and convene the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), a regional group run by leftist countries, to bless his fraudulent reelection.
That’s why the region’s democracies must act now, before it’s too late, and send their top diplomats to Caracas. It’s in the region’s best interest to prevent a bloodbath and a new wave of mass migration from Venezuela.
SDTX hosts historic reentry simulation
HOUSTON – The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas (SDTX) hosted, for the first time in its history, a reentry simulation for law enforcement, lawyers and probation, non-profit agencies, city personnel and relevant community members to mimic the challenges people who leave prison often face when reintegrating into society, announced U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
The event was held at the United Way of Greater Houston July 2 and was designed to provide a deeper appreciation for the complexity of reentry and a stronger commitment to support policies and programs that address these challenges.
The simulation placed participants in the shoes of someone recently released from prison. In the exercise, attendees were given a detailed profile and had to navigate daily tasks under constraints similar to those formerly incarcerated people face. They had to try to find employment, secure housing, attend probation meetings or access necessary services - all with limited time, financial resources and facing significant bureaucratic hurdles.
A debrief and discussion about the criminal justice system and the complexities of reentry followed the simulation.
“This empathy, I hope, will lead to tomorrow’s second chances,” said Hamdani.
When individuals leave prison, they face significant challenges that act as barriers to reintegration - securing employment, finding stable housing, accessing healthcare and mental health support, and reconnecting with family and community. Without proper support, the risk of recidivism increases dramatically.
However, effective reentry programs that provide holistic support aimed at addressing this myriad of challenges can make a difference. By offering job training, educational
opportunities, substance abuse treatment, mental health services and housing assistance, these programs create a supportive framework for individuals to rebuild their lives. Research consistently demonstrates that communities with robust reentry initiatives see significant reductions in recidivism rates. This not only promotes community safety but also reduces the financial burden on the justice system and taxpayers.
The simulation provided an eye-opening opportunity to participants. Some expressed the understanding of the immense difficulties those reentering society often face. The experience of frustration, anxiety and the constant pressure to comply with numerous requirements while trying to rebuild a life provided insights that mere statistics and reports cannot convey.
The SDTX is committed to raising awareness about the importance of reentry and to supporting initiatives that promote successful reintegration into society.
“I hope by combining the strengths of effective reentry programs and the enlightening experience of reentry simulations, we can forge a justice system that not only reduces recidivism but also honors the humanity and potential of every individual,” said Hamdani. “Stakeholders who truly understand and empathize with the struggles of reentry can become powerful advocates for the necessary changes in policy and practice.”
Hamdani praised the work of Executive Assistant U.S. Attorney Krystal Walker Noble, who organized and led the effort on behalf of the SDTX.
“The hurdles returning citizens face demonstrate how they continue to pay a debt to society long after completing a term of imprisonment,” said Noble. “By hosting this reentry simulation, the SDTX has encouraged community partners to join us in reducing recidivism throughout the district.”

First Texas Case of West Nile Virus
Public health officials urge Texans to be vigilant in protecting against mosquito bites after confirming the first Texas case of West Nile virus and 10 travel-associated dengue cases for 2024. Precautions should be taken in Texas and while traveling internationally to countries where dengue is endemic.
The first case of West Nile in 2024 was reported in a Montgomery County resident who has been diagnosed with West Nile fever. As of today, the Texas Department of State Health Services has identified nearly 800 mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus in 24 counties.
West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Most people exposed to the virus don’t get sick, but about 20 percent develop symptoms like headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. In a very small proportion, less than one percent, the virus affects
the nervous system, leading to the more serious West Nile neuroinvasive disease that can cause neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, paralysis and even death.
All of the dengue cases reported in Texas so far in 2024 were acquired while traveling internationally, but a small number of dengue cases have been acquired from mosquito bites in southern Texas in recent years. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently alerted health care providers about the increased risk of dengue virus infections in the United States in 2024 based on an unprecedented number of cases being reported globally and higher-than-expected cases identified among U.S. travelers. Most dengue virus cases in the US have been linked to travel to places where the virus is endemic, including most tropical countries of the South Pacific, Asia, the Caribbean, South and Central America and Africa. Dengue virus is transmitted by infected
mosquitoes and about 25 percent of infections become symptomatic. After about three to 14 days, infected people may develop a fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, muscle aches, joint pain, bone pain, pain behind the eyes and headaches. Most people recover completely within two weeks. However, about one in 20 symptomatic people develop a severe infection called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever that can be fatal if untreated.
“Unfortunately, many mosquitoes in Texas are capable of spreading diseases, such as West Nile and dengue. These diseases are often mild, but some people will develop severe illness,” said DSHS Commissioner Jennifer Shuford, MD, MPH. “So, it is important for Texans to know how to protect themselves against mosquito bites.”
Heavy, widespread rain from Hurricane Beryl has left behind standing water that provides mosquitoes ample breeding ground to multiply. An increase in nuisance mosquitoes may initially occur in areas impacted by the storm. This may be followed by an increase in the types of mosquitoes that can spread diseases like West Nile. People working on clean up and recovery should take steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
The Texas Department of State Health Services urges people to not give mosquitoes a biting chance by following these steps to protect themselves and their families from West Nile and other diseases spread by mosquitoes.
WEAR long sleeves and pants. Create a barrier to mosquito bites by covering up.
APPLY insect repellent. Use EPA-registered repellent such as those containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, para-menthane-diol or 2-undecanone.
REMOVE standing water. Emptying out water that accumulates in toys, tires, trash cans, buckets, clogged rain gutters and plant pots will deny mosquitoes a place to lay their eggs and reproduce.
People should also keep mosquitoes out of their homes by using air conditioning and making sure window and door screens are in good repair. DSHS urges people with West Nile or dengue symptoms to contact their health care provider and mention any exposure to mosquitoes.
There were 154 cases of West Nile disease in Texas last year and 13 deaths.* Over the last five years, Texas has had 497 cases and 68 deaths. There were 79 cases of dengue in Texas last year, including one locally acquired case in Val Verde County. Mosquitoes remain active in much of Texas into November and December.

Understanding the CORE FOUR Exercises
Endurance, Strength, Balance and Flexibility – Each Is Important. At just about every age, a well-rounded fitness routine is a key component of a vital and healthy life. Understanding the importance of the four primary types of exercise is crucial when deciding when and how to stay active. Imagine your body as a fourlegged table. Each leg represents one of the core four: endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. If one leg is weak or missing, the table becomes unstable. Here’s a look at why each type is needed:
Aerobic exercises: Your stamina powerhouse
Aerobic exercises – sometimes known as endurance exercises – are activities that
speed up your breathing and heart rate. They include things like brisk walking, running, swimming, cycling and even dancing.
Potential benefits include:
• Heart Health: Endurance training strengthens the heart muscle, improving blood flow and helping to reduce the risk of heart disease.
• Increased Energy: Regular aerobic activity increases your stamina and energy levels, making daily activities easier.
• Weight Management: Aerobic activities burn calories and may help you maintain a healthy weight.
• Mental Health: Doing these types of activities releases endorphins, or “feel good” hormones, which can help alle-
viate stress and enhance mood.
Strength exercises: Building your muscular fortress
Strength training involves using resistance to build muscle mass, which can help improve your balance and posture, while helping to reduce pain and stress in your joints and lower back. Related activities include lifting weights, using resistance bands, or bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats.
Potential benefits include:
• Muscle Mass and Metabolism: Building muscle increases your metabolic rate, helping you burn more calories, even at rest.
• Bone Health: Strength exercises are crucial for bone density and can help reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
• Functional Fitness: These types of activities enhance your ability to perform everyday tasks, from lifting groceries to playing with your grandkids.
• Injury Prevention: Strong muscles help protect your joints and may reduce the risk of certain types of injuries.
Balance: The key to stability
Balance exercises help improve your ability to control your body’s position, whether stationary or moving and can help prevent falls, especially as you get older. Balance activities include things like standing on one leg, tai chi, specific yoga poses and walking heel to toe.
Potential benefits include:
• Fall Prevention: Especially important for older adults, good balance helps reduce the risk of falls and related injuries.
• Coordination: Improves overall body coordination and stability.
• Athletic Performance: Essential for athletes, balance helps enhance performance and reduce the risk of certain types of injury.
• Confidence: Better balance increases confidence in movement, making you more active and engaged in various activities.
Flexibility: Optimize your movements
Flexibility exercises, such as stretching and yoga, improve the range of motion of your muscles and joints, while focusing on lengthening muscles and tendons.
Potential benefits include:
• Injury Prevention: Flexible muscles and joints are less prone to injuries.
• Posture and Alignment: These activities help improve your overall posture and may reduce the risk of back pain and other musculoskeletal issues.
• Mobility: Enhances your ability to perform daily activities.
• Stress Relief: Stretching and yoga can relax the mind and body, reducing stress and promoting mental clarity.
