Be Your Best You 4 easy steps

Yoga, Meditation, Healthy Eating, and Emotional Intelligence

It’s 2014. So many of us want to live a full life, right? A life where you experience deep and lasting intimacy. A life where you make a living doing what you love. A life where you make a difference in the world. A life where you are your best self.

So let’s first agree on what we know promotes all this: To look and feel awesome, most of us know how important it is to eat right, how critical it is to exercise and how meditation – yoga’s cousin – can rewire the mind and instill a sense of peace. And according to the latest research and visionary thinkers, a fourth component is so powerful that the other three are dramatically less effective without it: it’s Emotional Intelligence.

What’s Emotional Intelligence? According to HelpGuide.org, a trusted nonprofit resource, “Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to identify, use, understand, and manage emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges, and defuse conflict.” To improve emotional intelligence, there are millions of self-help books telling us what we need to know. But “knowing” versus “doing” are worlds apart. For example, we know faking orgasms can create problems in our relationships and won’t lead to satisfaction. But how many times have we pledged, “That’s the last time I’ll fake an orgasm”, only for the next time to be just as fake? Going through the motions or “faking it” is worlds apart from being authentic. Changing how you do what you do makes all the difference. More specifically, by “experiencing” or “doing” the actions below with true intentions from your heart and with a commitment to practice and embrace all four key components of your life, you will be taking a huge step towards living more authentically.

Yoga Many of us make it to the gym before or after work. But after sitting at the computer for hours, we develop aches in our shoulders and neck, and pain in our lower back. Wouldn’t it be great to eliminate both immediately? These moves incorporate a system of breathing that guarantee a great work out, get oxygen flowing to our brain while releasing stress. And best of all, our four tips can be done where you’re sitting, right NOW.

I. Reduce your Lower Back Pain

II. De-Stress your Shoulders and Neck

III. Strengthen your Immune System

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity

Before you begin, gently close your eyes and envision your spine releasing tension and becoming more flexible like an elastic band. Using your inner eye, feel this from the top of your neck to the base of your lower spine.

Before you begin, close your eyes and imagine your shoulders and neck being loose and releasing any “snap, crackle or pop.” Extra bonus- oxygen floods into your brain and face.

Before you begin, close your eyes and see your body in complete, perfect balance and health.

What to Do

What to Do

What to Do

1. Sit with a straight spine, feet on the floor and hands on your thighs

1. Sit with a straight spine, feet on the floor, and hands on your thighs

1. Sit with a straight spine, and feet on the floor

2. As you inhale, stretch your spine forward and bring your shoulder blades together in the back

2. As you inhale, roll your shoulders up towards your ear lobes; as you exhale, roll your shoulders forward and down. Complete 5 circles in that direction; then reverse and do 5 more circles

2. Place your right hand around/over the left elbow and left hand around/under your right elbow by crossing your arms in front of your chest, elbows bent at 90 degree angle, arms parallel to the floor

3. As you exhale, stretch your spine backwards and roll your shoulders forward. 4. Continue this forward/back stretch for at least 1 minute 5. To end, inhale and stretch as far forward as you can with your shoulder blades closer together and hold for 10 seconds. Exhale and relax 6. Next, place your hands on your shoulders, elbows out to the sides 7. As you inhale, turn your head and torso to the left; as you exhale, turn your head and torso to the right. With each left/right twist, try to look over your shoulder to increase the stretch. Continue for 1 minute

3. Shrug your shoulders 5 times, inhaling as you push up and exhaling as you drop down; to end, inhale, push your shoulders up as high as you can towards your ear lobes and hold for 5 seconds. Exhale and relax.

3. Inhale and raise your arms up so they touch your forehead; exhale and lower your arms so they touch your navel. Continue for 1 minute

4. Then slowly draw a circle with your nose: turn your head to your left; as you inhale bring your nose up the left wall and across the ceiling; exhale as you bring your nose down the right wall and across the floor. Complete 3 circles; then reverse and do 3 more circles 5. Next inhale as you let your head drop back; exhale as you bring your chin to your chest 6. Inhale as you bring your head even with the horizon; as you exhale drop the left ear to your left shoulder and stretch; inhale and return head to the horizon; as you exhale drop the right ear to the right shoulder. Inhale as you return your head to center.

Eating Healthy Too often, we select food based on what tastes great. Alternatively, many of us may use food to satisfy unmet needs and to hide negative feelings. But we find that food really can’t address either. We forget that simple, fresh, whole food has dynamic nutritional value with the power to heal like the best medicine. Here are tips that show you how to do just that. What to Do

To be selected, our recipes must pass our 8 Point Test:

I. Comfort Food Is Anything But Comforting

1) Easy and fast prep time (< 20 minutes); 2) Not too many ingredients; 3) No ÒstrangeÓ ingredients; 4) Not expensive (we hate to see you throw out lobster you never used); 5) Cooked on stove top; 6) Uses 1 or 2 pots (we hate clean up, too); 7) Healthy, helps you lose weight AND provides the nutrients you need; 8) Tastes great.

During times of stress, don’t reach for “comfort” foods loaded with sugar or starch. Those foods actually increase the body’s level of cortisol. Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol have been shown to increase abdominal fat, impair cognitive function, suppress thyroid function, increase blood pressure, lower immunity, and decrease bone density – none of these are comforting. Instead, try some dried fruits like apricots and dates, which are loaded with magnesium, a nutrient that calms nerves, helps muscles relax, and keeps blood flowing freely.

II. The Power of Water Dehydration is one of the most common culprits of zapped energy. Water is necessary for every bodily function, including converting calories into energy, and even a slight dip in fluid consumption leads to physical and mental fatigue. Not drinking enough water is also a major cause of weight gain, since we may misinterpret thirst for hunger. Two suggestions: 1) For top energy, drink a glass of water immediately when you get up in the morning. During the night you become dehydrated and your cup of java will only dehydrate you more. Extra bonus- water in the AM helps with critical elimination. 2) Drink water throughout your day to address those stressful moments with a cool head.

III. How to Become a Top Chef Forget the TV shows that need teams of chefs to create a fabulous meal. We researched lots of recipes in our Gourmet Fitness Test Kitchen so you can work late and still throw something fabulous together.

26

Elucid Magazine Summer 2014

Want a meal to de-stress? Try this Recipe: Colorful Sweet Potato Accented with Green Beans and Beets 1 sweet potato, unpeeled, cut into wedges 3 beetroots, unpeeled, cut into wedges 1-2 cups baby spinach leaves 1 cup low-fat plain yogurt 1/4 cup orange juice 1 garlic clove, crushed 1 cup green beans, blanched 2 tablespoons pistachio nuts, chopped, toasted pepper, to taste

Directions: 1. Place the beetroot and sweet potato into a steamer and steam vegetables until tender. Thinner pieces will take less time; approximately 10-15 minutes. Once the beets and sweet potato are almost done, add green By Petr Kratochvil teaspoons orange rind, finely grated 2. beans. If you want the beans to be extra crisp, quickly remove after steaming and throw into ice water. 3. In a small bowl combine the yogurt, orange juice, orange rind, and garlic to make the dressing. 4. Arrange spinach leaves on a plate with steamed vegetables. 5. Drizzle the dressing on top of your salad, garnish with pistachios and add pepper to taste.

Meditation Progressive companies like Google have incorporated meditation programs since 2003. According to Chade-Meng Tan who leads its program, meditation “is your guide to enhancing productivity and creativity, finding meaning and fulfillment in your work and life, and experiencing profound peace, compassion, and happiness while doing so.” So when life is overwhelming you and you hear yourself say, “I need a vacation” give yourself a mental vacation- free of charge- and find peace in moments of anxiety with these actions.

I. Reduce Anxiety

II. Build Confidence

III. Increase Energy

Since most of us usually take short and shallow breaths, we feel agitated and restless. Because our mind always follows our breathing, your mind slows down and becomes calmer by taking long deep breaths. Extra Bonus- this practice also expands your lungs. More oxygen is a good thing.

We all want to feel confident. One of the best ways is to build a strong power center which is located at our navel.

Sometimes our days are long and we could really use an energy boost.

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity

Before you begin, close your eyes and see every cell filled with peace.

What to Do 1. Sit with a straight spine, feet on the floor, hands resting palms up on your lap 2. Inhale slowly for a count of 5, hold for a count of 5, and exhale for a count of 5 3. As your practice becomes easier, begin to lengthen the amount of time for each segment to 7 or 8 seconds, 10 or 11 seconds, etc. 4. Continue for 3 minutes

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity. Before you begin, close your eyes and feel a powerful radiance emanating from your center. What to Do 1. Sit with a straight spine, feet on the floor 2. Block your right nostril with your right thumb, as you inhale through your left nostril 3. Hold your breath as you pump your navel 12 times as you silently chant “Wa He Guru” pumping once per sound. (This means, “Wow, beyond description is this journey from darkness to light.”) 4. Then block your left nostril and exhale right

How to Create the Foundation of Authenticity Before you begin, close your eyes and see oxygen surging through your body, feeling more vigor and liveliness. What to Do 1. Sit with a straight spine, feet on the floor, arms in a V shape above your head, elbows straight 2. “Crunch” your knuckles by bringing fingertips to the base of your fingers, thumbs extended out 3. “Breath of fire”: take short but equal breaths in and out; on each inhale, release your navel; as you exhale, pull in your navel. Continue for 1 minute.

5. Continue for 3 minutes

Emotional Intelligence When the events happening around us don’t match our expectation, voila, an emotional reaction! Emotions are a crucial part of life. So why do we need to discuss emotional intelligence? Because a part of being healthy is being realistic, meaning we acknowledge that we react emotionally to various negative events with disappointment, anger, etc. Instead of allowing our bodies to retain tension, we can release it with yoga and meditation as outlined above. Also, while we may be unable to control our external environment, emotional intelligence enables us to control what occurs inside of us. We can begin to “push the pause button” and with practice, instead of reacting, we can create a response that is more supportive and positive. Here’s anecdotal evidence: “Buddha Is Abused” by Chris Cade Buddha seemed quite unruffled by the insults hurled at him by a visitor. When his disciples later asked him what the secret of his serenity was, he said:

“Imagine what would happen if someone placed an offering before you and you did not pick it up. Or someone sent you a letter that you refused to open. You would be unaffected by its contents, would you not? Do this each time you are abused and you will not lose your serenity.” Or said another way, if you choose to not absorb what occurs outside you, it cannot affect you on the inside. The following actions help you do just that. I. The secret to change How many times have you vowed to change your diet only to have your old eating habits take over? Do you simply lack willpower? NO. Understanding how the brain works can explain why it’s not your fault. Habits are formed by repeating something over and over millions of times. The neurons associated with that habit have thick myelin sheaths, like a 6-lane highway. A new action makes its way down a foot path, which eventually becomes a dirt road and can develop into a super highway. In short, practice, patience, and persistence are required to form any new skill, whether it’s learning how to play tennis, maintain a healthier diet, or improve your relationships. So don’t give up after a few tries. Give your brain a chance to catch up. Remember, you’re in the driver’s seat.

II. You have the power to change your life Too often, we are aware of the things that are not working, yet we speak about them as if they can’t be altered. We begin to believe they are a part of our identity. Instead, take action. For example, if you can’t get a good night’s sleep, research suggests we not have caffeine less than 6 hours before bedtime, don’t eat dinner less than 4 hours before bedtime, stop watching TV and put away smart phones at least 1 hour…you get the idea. And to infuse your sleep with calm, think of 3 things you’re grateful for just before bed. Gratitude creates miracles.

III. What do journaling, blogging and tweeting have in common? Your story! “Owning our story and loving yourself through that process is the bravest thing we’ll ever do,” says Brene Brown. So journal, blog and tweet away! Tell the truth about who you are, where you come from, what you’re up against, and learn to love yourself in the process of telling it. Our sense of worthiness lives inside our story. What have you discovered inside yours? So there you have it: A dozen WHAT to do to look & feel awesome RIGHT NOW, plus HOW to create an authentic relationship with the most important person in your life – YOU. Now you know why it’s important to live authentically and love yourself. Vanity Proves Unfair: Aging in a “Selfie” Society

W

rinkled skin, faded flush in our cheeks, grey hair, loss of hair, less tone in all of those desirable places – this is the harsh reality of growing up and aging. The natural growth of a human from infancy to adolescence to adulthood is inescapable. It is no secret that eternal youth has always been a desire of women and men alike, but it seems that in recent generations, looking young and beautiful has succeeded being a want and has become a “need”. It seems as if our society is diving deeper and deeper into shallow water, constantly giving into these pressures of creating a perfect self by sculpting our bodies to a T, giving in to each and every diet fad, and allowing the phrase “Don’t like it? Fix it” to encourage and justify plastic surgery that rearranges our physical features. We live in an age in which external beauty just might trump the inner and this could ultimately lead to a collective mental breakdown in years to come. We’ve fallen into a sort of Peter Pan complex – we are opposed to growing older. Today’s issue is not due to disinclination towards responsibility, but averseness to aging. Let’s face it: our world cherishes the beautiful ones and puts them on a pedestal for the world to see, love, and idolize. Perfectionism is a disease, and a majority of us have caught the bug. As we live out our 20s and 30s, we sculpt our bodies, paint our faces, and maintain the health and color of our hair. As we age, our bodies will change without our consent: weight will become easier to gain and harder to lose, while our skin will start to wrinkle and eventually sag into frailty. After decades of straightening and coloring in the pursuit of youthful beauty, our hair will be fried and tired. Youth is not meant to last forever, a realization that has yet to set upon this generation.

The issue is not that youth is short-lived; it is that we have created a definition of beauty that is. According to dictionary.com, the definition of beauty is “the quality present in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind”. I see no restrictions in that definition, but the media we are exposed to daily tells a different story: in order to be beautiful, women must be tall, lean, and free of cellulite and blemishes, with perfectly whitened teeth. Society would like all men to be tall, tan, muscular, and athletic, crosses between Peyton Manning and Channing Tatum. Reading this, you’re probably all wishing this description fits you.

32

Elucid Magazine Summer 2014

Not only has society become fixated on perfecting appearances, but we have also become quite narcissistic. We live in a world where the term “selfie” is defined in printed dictionaries. The song entitled “#Selfie” by The Chainsmokers, a catchy and funny techpop single that is pathetically revealing of modern culture, can be heard during any given hour on the radio. It began with the profile picture on Facebook (or its predecessor, MySpace): the all-too-familiar pose where you place your camera or Smartphone upward facing you, possibly with friends. This evolved into the Instagram-style selfie, a picture of yourself decorated with special effects or filters. If you don’t fit the beauty definition we’ve all come to know, idealize, and loathe, then you will with the help of Valencia or Rise. Finally, there is Snapchat – vanity has escalated to a point where conversations via mobile device allow users to look at themselves. We love looking at ourselves, obsessing over perceived flaws, perfecting selfies with editing tools to gain “likes” and comments as evidence of approval from our “friends”. At some point, the editing needs to stop, both physically and digitally. All you need is love – for yourself, inside and out, wrinkles and all. This could happen simply by learning to appreciate ourselves, accepting what we look like and that it’s okay to change as we age. We need to redefine what beauty means to us; not as a society, but as individuals.

-- Julia Horniacek

STEP 1:

CLEANSE

STEP 2:

STEAM

STEP 3:

EXFOLIATE

Start by gently removing your makeup and preparing the skin to receive all of the goodness coming its way. I swear by the Triple Oxygen Foaming Cleanser by Bliss, which foams to a beautiful creamy consistency, has a pleasant citrus smell and is gentle enough to use on your eyes.

The best trick I know is to borrow your slow cooker/crock pot from the kitchen (or buy a second cheap crockpot if you don’t like the idea of duel usage). Prepare some hand towels to use for steam therapy: take a few large wash cloths or hand towels, run them under hot water until saturated, and ring them out. Then roll or fold the hot cloths so that they fit nicely into the slow cooker. Place the cooker on high and let the towels heat through for about 20 minutes with the lid on. After cleansing, take a hot towel (test the temperature first to avoid burns) and place it over your face, leaving your nose and mouth exposed for breathing. Press the towel into your skin while taking a few deep breaths – you may add a few drops of essential oils to the towels for added zen. After the towel has cooled, gently wipe from side to side to remove any additional makeup or cleanser from the face.

For exfoliation, I love to alternate between my Clarisonic Mia Brush and a good old-fashioned sugar scrub (don’t use both in one session to avoid damage). The sonic brush is so quick and easy that it does all of the work for you. While the Suki Exfoliate Scrub takes a little more effort, the scent will take you to heaven and it leaves your skin truly polished.

www.elucidmagazine.com

37

This step in the facial is all about relaxation and rehydration. Apply your favorite masque and let it go to work for 10-15 minutes, while you kick back with a magazine or paint your toe nails. I love the Boscia Blue Calming Masque – mostly because I think peeling it off afterwards is fun, but also because it is very hydrating and leaves the skin quenched. You may want to follow up with a second steam towel.t

STEP 4:

HYDRATE

Toners are designed to balance the pH in your skin after cleansing, which helps prevent that ‘tight’ feeling. I just discovered the Pixi Glow Tonic, and I am hooked! Use a cotton round to liberally apply your toner and then let it sink in for a minute or two before moving on.

STEP 5:

TONE

STEP 6:

REPLENISH

Americans are just coming around to the idea of including oils in our hair and skincare routines. We’ve been such a ‘clean’ obsessed nation that we’ve dried ourselves out by stripping away natural oils. Thank goodness the trend is reversing and we are finally seeing the beauty behind supple skin and hair. Tarte Pure Maracuja Oil is one of my favorite beauty secrets (you’re lucky I’m sharing it with you!). Press a few drops into your skin, especially on dry areas like under your eyes and on your cheeks. Your face will soak it in and scream “THANK YOU!!!”

STEP 7:

REPAIR

38

Elucid Magazine Summer 2014

Finish with your favorite moisturizer or serum like my cult favorite Image Vital-C Anti Aging Serum. Be sure you work all the way down your neck as well. You may need to apply lip balm and eye cream as well to replace any moisture lost from the steamy hot towel action.

My routine for a perfect at-home facial may seem like a lot of steps, but you can certainly cut out what you don’t have and substitute what you do. Of course, if you build up your supply of high quality products, you’ll be able to get amazing skin results just like the pros do. If you can schedule this routine in twice a month, you’ll notice a huge difference in the way your skin looks, and therefore how your makeup wears. Good luck!

NOT IT’S

ABOUT THE TO DO LIST?

“Don’t let weeds grow around your dreams.”

Jinny Ditzler, Author, Huffington Post contributor, and founder, Best Year Yet®

46

Elucid Magazine Summer 2014

H. Jackson Brown

The cost ? The pace of today’s world is faster than ever before. Sometimes it seems hopeless to try to keep up with it. Perhaps the only way you have found to stay sane is to write a To Do List each day and race to get as much of it done as you possibly can. You have no choice – you’re a responsible person with people who depend on you, so it all has to get done somehow. Yet living life in fast forward mode means that truly important things don’t happen. They get lost in the shuffle. So, what’s missing for you? The unwritten novel? Regular trips to the gym? Quiet time for meditation and contemplation? Taking your daughter to the museum? Confronting the big issue at work? At home? The Cost? Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche clearly describes the issue:

“If we look into our lives, we will see clearly how many unimportant tasks – so-called ‘responsibilities’ – accumulate to fill them up. One master compares them to ‘housekeeping in a dream.’ We tell ourselves we want to spend time on the important things of life, but there never is any time

You know the answer better than anyone. The big dreams get buried, the needed changes don’t happen, and disappointment lurks below the surface – unseen, but still present as the precious days pass by in pursuit of your To Do List. If you’re like me, what keeps you going is the certainty that someday their time will come. No matter where you are in life (young or old, buff or unfit, starting out or nearing retirement), there is a cost, whether it’s the unaddressed health issues, lifeless relationships, connections not made – the list goes on. Take just 60 seconds to think about those things you long to do – someday. Grab a pad and at the top of the page write:What would I do if I had enough time? Start writing as fast as you can. Don’t judge, don’t edit, don’t wordsmith, don’t sensor – just capture whatever comes into your head. Choose one aspiration on your list and take one small step each day to start bringing it to life and keep it moving forward. Promise yourself you’ll do it – or better yet, promise someone else who will hold you accountable and check in with them on a weekly basis. It’s not about the To Do List Here’s the truth: your To Do List is always going to get done because there’s no way you’re not going to do the shopping, the cooking, the work, the email, etc. Nothing stops you from doing these things. I promise that it’s possible for you to move the To Do List out of the driver’s seat and begin to focus on the things you long to do. Here’s What To Do • Choose one item from your “if I had time” list. • Do just one little thing every day to move towards that goal. Before long, that dream will have a life of its own and you couldn’t stop if you wanted to. That’s all there is to it – as H. Jackson Brown told us decades ago: “Don’t let weeds grow around your dreams.”

I would enjoy hearing how you’re doing as you bring these dreams to life. Share your progress by emailing me at jinny@bestyearyet.com. For more by Jinny Ditzler, visit www.bestyearyet.com. VERONICA BEARD is a classic and cool American sportswear brand. The brand is known for its modern perspective on iconic staples. The result is an excitingly wearable ready-to-wear collection. Sisters-in-law Veronica Miele Beard and Veronica Swanson Beard launched their brand in Fall 2010. It all began with their signature dickey jacket, a revolutionary layering must-have which features an interchangeable sweater insert. Versitility and wearability are core ideas for Veronica Beard, but the designer aesthetic is what makes this duo one to watch. The refreshing new designers’ success lies in an innate understanding of what their customers want. The pair credits this to designing for themselves and the women they know well.

Purity perfected naturally soft water vodka.

No one knows purity better than nature. We attribute our spirits’ distinctive smoothness to the uncommon naturally soft water in the Bend, Oregon, where our vodka is created. It is here where AnestasiA gains its unique essence — water nearly bare of calcium and magnesium as well as other hard mineral salts found in global and domestic water sources. The result — a 94 point rated vodka with an unparalleled silky crème brûlée finish. Distilled 5x and filtered 5x, AnestasiA Vodka™ is delightfully smooth, delicious, naturally gluten-free. Our multi-award-winning decanter type bottle is made using recycled materials. Enjoy responsibly.

Emma Watson Hollywood’s Sweetheart

E

merging from a decade dedicated to her role as Hermoine Granger, Emma Watson is proving herself to be a truly worthy Hollywood idol. As one of few young actresses to identify as a feminist with a healthy body image and a refreshingly mature attitude towards relationships and fame, Watson is one amazing woman. Add acting skills that have been honed over a decade and a half of constant work, a dynamic fashion sense, and the freedom to choose new and challenging roles (finally!) – Watson is the one to watch. While many young women agree with the ideals of feminism (why wouldn’t they?), few are willing to stick themselves with the label that may have a negative connotation for the millennial generation, many of whom see feminism as a synonym for man-hating or female supremacy. But for Watson, feminism doesn’t negate romantic idealism. In a 2011 interview with Vogue, Watson admitted, “I’m a feminist, but I think that romance has been taken away a bit for my generation. I think what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering, encompassing love – and it being more important and special than anything and everything else.” The Perks of Being a Wallflower in 2012 was arguably Watson’s biggest post-Harry Potter role to date. Along with her course at Brown University on the psychology of love, the film had a major role in shaping Watson’s positive outlook on relationships. In an interview discussing the film, Watson expressed her view: “It sounds like a cliche but I also learnt that you’re not going to fall for the right person until you really love yourself and feel good about how you are.” We can’t imagine there’s anything Watson doesn’t love about herself, though she has publically discussed her struggles with fame and desire for normalcy.

Although we all think she’s physically perfect, the well-known industry pressure on appearance has had an effect on the gorgeous actress. Navigating the transition of child actress to Hollywood fashion icon and sex symbol was challenging, as Watson expressed to a UK publication in 2009: “I find the whole concept of being ‘sexy’ embarrassing and confusing. If I do a photo-shoot, people desperately want to change me – dye my hair blonder, pluck my eyebrows, give me [bangs]. Then there’s the choice of clothes. I know everyone wants a picture of me in a mini-skirt. But that’s not me.” It’s refreshing to see that Watson goes through many of the same struggles as other young women in regards to self-expression and beauty norms. Discussing body image in Elle UK, Watson admits, “I don’t have perfect teeth, I’m not stick thin. I want to be the person who feels great in her body and can say that she loves it and doesn’t want to change anything.” This is something we all aspire to and Watson can be the one to show young women around the world that it’s possible to look attractive, authentic, and unique. With a college-level education obtained at Brown and Oxford Universities, nearly a lifetime spent acting in the spotlight, a fortune accumulated by saving throughout her career, and the attention of high fashion designers, we’re confident Emma Watson will make a smooth transition to Hollywood Icon status. We can’t wait to see what she does, says, and wears next. Alexis Archer

Your New Secret Weapon against Acne Cod Liver Oil I have acne. I also write for my awardwinning beauty blog, which is hard to do sometimes when I, you know, have acne. Or maybe it’s a good thing – instead of a Barbie who hit the epidermis jackpot telling you which cupcake remedy works best to eliminate a blemish or two, you get me, your girlfriend in the trenches who has tried, sampled, and cursed a cabinet full of failed acne solutions. Don’t get me wrong. They’re not all bad. The especially olfactory-offensive ones seem to work best, which is what I remind myself when I question my choice to dip into a mask that smells like rancid meat. Consistent washing with salicylic acid cleansers help too, as do benzoyl peroxide spot treatments. But not one of those solutions has eliminated my acne entirely. Then I discovered cod liver oil. I was skeptical at first. After all, I had been there and done that on the change your diet for better skin train. I was the conductor. Science says hormones in milk irritate skin and trigger acne; I quit dairy for months with limited success. Another time I swallowed fish oil capsules every day for two months. The bottle read: “No Fish Burps!” That was a lie. Each pill carried an aftertaste of punishment and regret. No success there either. Cod liver oil is much different.

78

Elucid Magazine Summer 2014

Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement very high in vitamins A and D. The key is the active form of vitamin A – retinoic acid (not to be confused with beta carotene, the form of vitamin A found in plants). Topically, retinoic acid is used to treat wrinkles and acne; dermatologistprescribed brands include Retin-A Micro and Differin. Accutane, a heavy-duty oral prescription for acne sufferers with seriously scary side effects, is also a derivative of the vitamin. Using nearly the same mechanism as its prescription counterparts, cod liver oil clears skin almost as well.

Carlson isn’t the only cod liver oil on the shelves. Whole Foods carries its own version of the supplement. It’s an enticing find, given its supremely inexpensive price, about $10 for 90 softgels (compared to around $30 for a comparable amount of Carlson’s).

I can personally attest to Carlson’s Cod Liver Oil, a liquid form of the supplement flavored with lemon. The oil doesn’t taste remotely like fish or liver – more like canola oil with a splash of citrus – so not terrible, although not exactly palatable enough to be served on a plate with crostini and cheese. But it could taste like tar oil, for all I care, because soon after I began taking the supplement, my acne vanished in a matter of days.

It would be irresponsible not to mention a few serious health considerations associated with cod liver oil and vitamin A supplements in general. Pregnant women should consult with their doctor before taking the supplement, as high levels of vitamin A are very harmful to unborn children. Even in healthy individuals, mega doses of vitamin A are dangerous. To avoid taking more than the daily recommended value (2,000IU to 3,000IU), follow the instructions on the label.

This is not an exaggeration. Cod liver oil accomplished what every other acne remedy claims to do, and then went ahead and did something bold by actually doing it. You should see me. I have super clear skin, which is kind of a big deal when you’ve spent an inordinate amount of your precious adult life in an unhealthy rage against your face’s lack of cooperation.

Purist cod liver oil enthusiasts mark Green Pasture’s Fermented Cod Liver Oil as the gold standard. The story is that the fermented process delivers a better grade of vitamin A and a superior balance between vitamins A and D. Maybe that’s true, but it also costs $50.
