NEWS FROM WICKEN FEN NATURE RESERVE Photo: Sedge Fen walk by Glynis Pierson Winter walks Autumn and winter see the return of migrant birds to the fen such as wigeon, redwing and fieldfare and the first hen harriers have also been spotted. The wetter areas of the reserve attract wildfowl in large numbers over the colder months too; often 5000 or more birds. If you enjoy the walk past Baker’s Fen hide along Harrison’s Drove towards Wicken Lode, it’s starting to get muddy so wellies are a good idea. It’s worth stopping off at Bakers’ Fen hide as the views of the open water are well worth seeing, and it’s usually not busy, so a tranquil place to pause for a few moments of reflection. Footprints project latest We’re looking forward to starting some more new activities as part of our community engagement project funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. In November we will be training our new community archaeology volunteers ready to support local people to get involved with fieldwalking on 20th/21st November. It will be interesting to see what evidence we can find of those whose footprints crossed the land in the past and connect people with the heritage of this landscape. We’re also going to be planting just over 1000 trees at Oily Hall and White Fen in the wider reserve between 27 and 29 November. Part of the planting is to enhance the community woodland as part of our Footprints project, and the remainder is the planting of blossom trees as part of the National Trust’s Blossom Together project. Both areas should provide not only new habitats for wildlife, but also places for people to enjoy walks and picnics, whether on foot or as a 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

stop off along the Lodes Way cycle route. We will be inviting local communities to come along and get involved, so keep the dates in mind and an eye on our website and social media channels for more details. Father Christmas Father Christmas has kindly made time to visit us at the Fen this Christmas. Join the elves to make a decoration, and to collect a Christmas craft pack for taking home, before popping into the Fen Cottage where Father Christmas will be warming his toes by the fire. He will have a present for you too of course! There are 9 dates available altogether, and on the 4th and 5th December it will be Mother Christmas who is visiting the Fen this year, sharing the workload as the man himself is pretty busy. See our website for details and to book. Percy the Park Keeper’s Winter Wander Trail This winter you can enjoy Percy the Park Keeper’s new world of adventures and fun at Wicken Fen. Percy and his animal friends will be giving nature a helping hand, and you can help by following our trail round the Boardwalk and Woodland Walk. The trail opens on 4th December until 3rd January. No need to book. Christmas and New Year opening The Visitor Centre, Sedge Fen, shop and café are open every day except Christmas Day. See our website for all the latest information and opening times www.nationaltrust.org.uk/wicken-fen

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update

FULL COUNCIL MEETING 27 SEPTEMBER 2021 Councillors of the City of Ely Council welcomed three guest speakers at the recent Full Council meeting to talk about issues of interest that help inform the Council’s work. Joan Wall of the Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign gave a brief history of how the Group was formed and what their aims were. She was keen to gain the support of the City Council in gaining empty properties for the current refugee situation. The City Council have no housing stock of their own, but were able to report that they had already been in touch with the Chief Executive of East Cambridgeshire District Council and had received a response stating that all the Councils of Cambridgeshire had adopted the same approach as for the Syrian refugees with Cambridge City acting as the lead agency enabling a cross boundary and multi-agency approach. It is understood that ECDC already had a number of offers from private landlords which had been forwarded to Cambridge City. Sally Bonnett, Forward Planning and Infrastructure Manager of ECDC spoke of the current housing development and infrastructure situation for North Ely. The Council were keen to learn of the progress towards the development of the Community Hub, Pub and Shop planned. Once built the Community Hub would be leased to the City of Ely Council and consultations would be taking place on what provision residents might want from this. Our new Inspector, Shane Fasey, introduced himself to the Council and explained the current staffing at Ely Police Station. He also set out their priorities and encouraged the Council to publicise the Police’s website where residents can leave comments on issues that are bothering them so they can be addressed. This will help the Police gain evidence to enable them to act on certain issues. He agreed to come back to a future meeting to talk about their Engagement Strategy. https://www.cambs.police.uk/ Neighbourhood-Policing/East-Cambs East Cambridgeshire<https://www.cambs.police. 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELY CHRISTMAS LIGHTS SWITCH ON EVENT – Our beautiful City will once again be soon ready for the festive season as our dedicated team of volunteers start to put up the Christmas Lights. They work hard all year and are out in all weathers to bring festive cheer to the City – so if you see them give them a wave… Unfortunately, due to the uncertainty with Covid 19, the Council has taken the decision not to proceed with the Christmas Lights Switch on Event this year. However, the Council very much looks forward to providing the Christmas Lights Illuminations and a Christmas shopping evening where these can be appreciated. More details regarding this will be published in due course. The Council is very grateful to all the volunteers that have helped past and present, in providing the Switch on Event in previous years and to those that are out in all weathers erecting the lights for usall to enjoy. By the time that you read this I will have attended the KD Productions Pantomime launch.I do encourage people to go to see it when it opens inDecember- you won’t be disappointed! Lastly I want to thank the people who put in so much hard work to make our events happen CALLING ALL YOUNG PHOTOGRAPHERS! What do you see when you look at Ely? E10 PETROL IN LAWNMOWERS As I write this we are just getting over a crisis of petrol shortages which I hope are now resolved, however one issue is set to be topical for a good while yet - E10 petrol in lawnmowers. Have you heard of E10 petrol? There are lots of articles in the newspapers and online about this new fuel which is available now as the standard in the UK. Have a look next time you're at the pump. To make a comparison: E5 is 5% and E10 is 10% ethanol. From autumn 2021 it has been introduced as the standard unleaded petrol at most filling stations in the UK. Most of the articles on the topic of E10 fuel are concentrated on whether or not your car will run on it - many classic cars and motorbikes will have problems and most petrol cars manufactured before 2011 are not built to use E10 fuel. This can be checked on the government website. Why is E10 good for the environment? E10 means there is 10 percent ethanol in the petrol. Ethanol is a plant based product intended to make our fuel better for the environment. This is great news for the birds, the bees and the flowers but not so great for petrol engines, especially older or smaller engines such as those found on lawnmowers and garden equipment. E10 fuel is made from renewable plant based resources such as sugar beet and wheat, which reduces overall Carbon Dioxide emissions and is therefore kinder to our environment. Can I use E10 petrol in my mower? So, what about your lawnmower and other garden equipment? Will your mower run on E10 fuel? The answer to this is yes it will but you must 16 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

be on the ball with your fuel hygiene or use a fuel stabiliser or alternative such as Aspen. The problem with ethanol in fuel is that it is hygroscopic. This means it attracts moisture from the air and by the time your petrol is 2 months old it can contain up to 10% water. Your mower will not run on water. This is one of the most frequent issues we see, especially at the beginning of the cutting season. What does E10 fuel do to my engine? Water in your fuel causes damage to the internals of the carburettor on your mower or garden equipment. When the water separates in your tank and the mower tries to draw it into the carburettor, water cannot be compressed inside your engine hence it won’t run. It is a bigger problem in engines which sit unused for months such as your mower over winter or if not used regularly in the summer. Ethanol can increase deterioration of fuel tanks and other fuel system parts. Many small engines use aluminium parts which corrode more quickly so are more at risk from E10 petrol. It also makes the engine run hotter which is not good as it can burn out valves & damage the engine. So, what’s the solution for E10 in lawnmowers? Thankfully there are some solutions which do not involve buying a new battery mower (although this is an option). •

At Fenland Spirit Services many of our customers book an annual service in the winter to ensure their garden equipment is in tip top condition when it comes out of hibernation after the colder months. We can advise you on your options for winter storage and solutions for the problems caused by E10 petrol. Get in touch today to arrange your lawnmower service & beat the spring rush. Give us a call on 0775 383 6499

Only buy fuel in small amounts - by only using fresh fuel which is less than 1 month old you should avoid the water accumulating in your tank. Use super unleaded petrol - this currently contains 5% ethanol so should last longer before causing a problem in your mower. Use Aspen instead - this is a benzine and ethanol free fuel which will last much longer, up to 5 years, it is available for 2 and 4 stroke machinery. We sell it and can advise on its use Use a fuel treatment, we advise Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit. It stabilises the ethanol in the petrol, stopping it from attracting water. We sell lots of this and treat all the fuel we use when servicing a customer's garden equipment.

Give your lawnmower some TLC The introduction of E10 might seem overwhelming but the key thing is not to panic. Just be aware that there are potential problems for engines that come with using E10 fuel. But there are also benefits with its green credentials. You just need to keep an eye on your mower.

have received additional training in pre-hospital care. Babcock Mission Critical Services provide our highly skilled pilots, who not only deliver our crews safely to the patient but also provide extra manpower, communication, security and next event planning at scene.

East Anglian Air Ambulance continues to see an incredible response to appeals and raffles, from our ever-supportive East Anglian community – Thank You one and all. An important contribution to these results has been the time and effort put in by volunteers across all four counties. Despite the privations imposed to counter Covid-19, careful management of finances has enabled EAAA to continue normal operations. Also, and significantly, we have the facility and confidence to press on with 24/7 HEMS despite the challenging environment that is facing all charities. Helicopters - To remind you, EAAA operates two highly capable H145 helicopters out of Cambridge and Norwich bases. These helicopters enable a multi-pilot operation with the capacity to carry a doctor, a CCP, and an observer when required. This crew constitution still affords a payload of 250kgs with a flight time endurance of two hours and, importantly, the ability to reach anywhere in the region within 25 minutes.

However, looking forward, we are still in uncertain times financially as our ability to fundraise in traditional ways continues to be extremely unpredictable and challenging. Also, we cannot rely upon ongoing cost savings in areas such as our lottery and events. The pandemic has effectively deprived us of over a year of growth in income versus expenditure – and, mindful of this, it is incumbent upon us all to redouble our efforts to raise funds to ensure the continuation of the Life Saving work that East Anglian Air Ambulance, our Air Ambulance, performs, through collection boxes, events, legacies and our lottery. To participate in the EAAA Winter Raffle 2021, please go to – ‘eaaa.raffleentry.org.uk’ – for your chance to win £5,000 or £1,000, £500, £250(2) or one of ten £50 prizes. Remember, no direct regular government funding is received so, taking part in our Winter Raffle is a wonderful way to help EAAA save more lives. Thank you. Michael White

Rapid Response Vehicles (RRVs ) – These are used when it is quicker to travel to the patient by road or when a helicopter is unavailable due to servicing, bad weather, etc. Each RRV carries the same complement of crew and equipment affording an alternative way of getting to patients. For 12 years a wonderful group of volunteers have been providing a Christmas Day lunch in Ely. This year we become a new charity under the umbrella of Ely Community Lunches formed by Representatives of many of the Ely churches and hoping to serve lunch in three venues this year with some collections/deliveries. Last year it was a very different situation owing to Covid constraints. but this year we hope to serve meals in various locations in the company of others, Covid rules allowing. So we are again asking the people of Ely if you would support this initiative by donating £10 to enable someone in need of food or company or

both, to be able to enjoy a delicious traditional lunch with others or deliver by one of Santa’s helpers! It’s not just lunch but the other things that make the day special and for some people it's the lack of human contact at this very difficult at Christmastide. Many of those who came and joined us in the past are people and families who are struggling financially with the demands of the festive season or those who are spending Christmas on their own, often the elderly or homeless. In the past we have done our best to ensure everyone has a very happy time, with a visit from Father Christmas and goody bags to take home. And we are planning to do this again this year! Last year we were bowled over by the support we received from local organisations like Rotary and the Masons as well as individuals. We would like to thank the local supermarkets namely Aldi, Iceland, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose for their generosity and support over the years. We are also grateful to Ely Foodbank, Age Concern and especially to the Lighthouse Centre for recommending people who can benefit from this project. A huge vote of thanks to all the volunteers who give their time and skills to making this happen. For a donation of £10 you can buy someone a Christmas Lunch by going online to: https://elycommunitylunches.com Where you can donate and keep up-to-date with our news. We will also have an Amazon Wish List so if you want to gift something to the project you can. Donations will go live in November Please contact Sallyann 07721413853 email: elycommunity.christmaslunch@gmail.com Thank you for your support in helping us make Christmas Day special for those in need.

Ely has become a victim of its own success. It has outgrown its car park; the number and flow of trains travelling north is restricted by the track layout at Ely North Junction (a bottleneck which currently hampers our aspiration for a full halfhourly service to King’s Lynn) while the flow of passengers through the station itself is restricted by the narrow entrance and small ticket hall. Work at the station is quite rightly restricted by the age and architectural status of the buildings and much needed improvements must be done sympathetically. The overflow carpark in Angel Drove is too far away for the less mobile so we would like to see more disabled spaces outside the station with a better, user-friendly layout. Provision should also be made for local buses to call at the station and provide a more environmentally friendly alternative to the car. With half-hourly services to London and longer 8 coach trains a lot has been achieved but there is still much to do so please join us and support our efforts. For details of membership, which includes 3 x newsletters a year, please see our website at www.flua.org.uk , have a look at our poster on Platform 2 or email us: fluasecretary@flua.org.uk

FLUA would like to see improvements to the car park which is in a very poor state and difficult for pedestrians to safely negotiate. Prior to the pandemic, more than 2,300,000 passengers used the station annually with just one narrow door providing access to the ticket hall and platforms. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 21

Buteyko Breathing and Yoga by Paul Fox

Is it possible that breathing could be making us ill? It seems like an odd question to ask, as we all need to breathe to stay alive. However, as long ago as the 1950s, a Ukrainian doctor, Konstantin Buteyko, noticed the link between breathing and health. People who had slow diaphragmatic breathing recovered more quickly and had fewer long term health conditions than those with shallow chesty breathing. Fast forward to 2021 and there are now hundreds of research papers on Buteyko and Yoga Breathing practices, which provide an evidence base to help people change their breathing pattern to one that supports health and wellbeing. Buteyko Breathing and gentle yoga practice combine effectively to support general health, but are particularly useful for people with: • Asthma • Sleep problems, including sleep apnea • Stress and/or mild-moderate anxiety Often people have developed long-term habits which have given them a breathing pattern disorder. Buteyko Breathing and Yoga classes aim to explore a new and healthier habit of breathing that should leave you feeling more energised, healthy and relaxed. Paul Fox runs the national charity, Yoga In Healthcare Alliance, is co-author of the forthcoming book, Yoga on Prescription, and has trained with Patrick McKeown at Buteyko Clinic International. For more information email Paul at: contactyoga4health@gmail.com or call 07782 413146.

Surely one little “drink” is not a problem? In chemical terms, alcohol is a “depressant” i.e. it depresses a number of functions of your brain and nervous system. The first alcoholic drink is very quickly absorbed by the body and will, almost immediately, start to affect the parts of your brain which control inhibitions, concentration, willpower and self-control. Socially, these effects are, generally, considered good but not so when you drive a car or ride a motorbike. That first drink or two also starts to affect your “fine motor skills” – your ability to control your hands and fingers to carry out detailed tasks. It also affects your vision as the background becomes blurred as does your peripheral vision and you become less able to focus on what is happening around you and more focussed on what is just immediately in front of you. Theses affects can be very pleasant but how compatible are they with driving a car etc? Firstly, your increased self-confidence will make you think that you’re a better driver than you are

and that you’ll actually drive better than when completely sober. Second, your depressed visual acuity and motor skills will, generally, reduce your ability to operate the car’s controls and properly assess what you are seeing. Thirdly, your lowered inhibitions will make you less likely to refuse to drive and more likely to confidently get in your car and encourage other people to join you. These affects can occur after consumption of quite small quantities of alcohol – sometimes well below the legal drink-drive limit. So, it is important to remember than even if you’re legally allowed to drive after one drink your ability to drive will still be impaired to a degree. In conclusion, DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. This issues top tip: Be visible to other road users – motorists, use dipped headlights in poor visibility (daylight running lights do not show lights to the rear) – motorcyclists, use dipped headlights in all conditions and wear Hi-Vis jackets – cyclists, wear Hi-Vis waistcoats and use flashing lights – dog walkers and pedestrians, wear Hi-Vis waistcoats when using unlit roads and in poor weather. Help Raise £20,000 for Hospice By Taking Part in Annual Festive Fun Run! Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is excited to announce that their annual Festive Run, sponsored by Price Bailey Ely and Busy Bee Recruitment, is now open for registrations! Runners, fancy-dress lovers and teams of families and friends are being invited to limber up, pull on their best Christmas-themed fancy dress and run 5 or 10km in their chosen location on Sunday 28 November. The jolly event, which welcomes in the start of the festive season, has raised a magnificent £138,500 since it began in 2010. Last year five hundred runners took part in their own hometown or chosen location, raising an astonishing £22,000 - a record-high! New for 2021, is the addition of a 10km option, so participants can now choose to do a longer route or stick to the traditional 5km distance. While festive fancy dress is not obligatory, there will be some extra motivation to get creative with the tinsel and glitter, as the Charity will be awarding prizes for best adult, child and group fancy dress. Those taking part will be invited to post their photos in a digital album and share their seasonal efforts on social media using #ARHCfestiverun. Joint sponsors, Busy Bee Recruitment and Price Bailey Ely, will have a hand in judging the entries and picking the lucky winners. Kayleigh Bysouth, Managing Director at Busy Bee Recruitment, comments: “Busy Bee Recruitment is honoured to be sponsoring a positive and inspiring event for another year. The last two years have taught us that health and wellbeing is incredibly important and the work this wonderful charity does means so much to so many. It will take £10.5 million to run all of the services this year and events such as this help raise the funds Arthur Rank Hospice Charity needs to help make every moment count, showing respect and kindness to every patient and their families.”

28 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

William Wilson, Partner at Price Bailey Ely adds: “It is fantastic to be involved with such a great, well supported event again. An amazing amount of money was raised last year in the new format, let’s hope the addition of the longer 10km distance inspires donors to dig even deeper for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity and the crucial care and support they provide.” Registration is £10 for adults and £5 for children (under 16) and keen Festive Runners (and walkers!) can now sign up at arhc.org. uk/festiverun. Everyone who registers before 21 November will receive a specially designed runner pack including a Santa hat, runner number, fundraising tips and treats to keep the energy levels up!

FROM LUCY FRAZER MP As 2021 draws to an end I wanted to let you know a few things that I have been doing since the summer. I have been proud to recognise those in our communities that have gone above and beyond to help others throughout the pandemic: collecting medication and groceries, to looking out for elderly neighbours or volunteering for local causes. I am pleased to have recognised this hard work through the Cambridgeshire COVID Community Champions Awards that I have organised, spotlighting these stories of selfless acts. I will shortly be announcing the winners and holding a special event in Parliament to recognise the hard work of nominees. Their stories will be shared on my website and social media as well as with the local community.

In September I was appointed to a new post in government as Financial Secretary to the Treasury. The Treasury has been firmly focused on our recovery from the pandemic. The Plan for Jobs focused on providing the skills and support for employees and employers, through initiatives like the Kickstart Scheme for those looking to get their first step on the jobs ladder and the Lifetime Skills Guarantee, offering adults the opportunity to gain new qualifications. If you have any questions or concerns then please contact me on lucy.frazer.mp@ parliament.uk. I wish you best wishes for the rest of 2021.

COMMUNITY NEWS The Tansy beetle which exists Wetlands are incredible habitats for hundreds at only three sites in the UK, is of thousands of species and summer is a great present as a small population time of year to get closer to the diverse range of at the Welney Wetland Centre. insects we can admire right here in the UK. The Particular habitat management footpaths are all open from summer to autumn, taking place this autumn is including the summer walk where visitors can aiming to promote the type of enjoy walking right through the wetland habitat in wetland they prefer, as well as the heart of the Fens. opening up new parts of the reserve to visitors. It may be one of the smallest species on the reserve, but as far as beetles go it is one of the chunkiest around. Tansy beetles are a protected species in the UK due to their restricted distribution. Threats such as loss of their food plant, summer flooding and mowing of riverbanks have contributed to the decline of this insect. Leigh Marshall, Centre Manager, said, ‘This beautiful beetle is about 10mm long, iridescent green with stripes of red and gold, it is lovely to see. It was thought to be restricted to just two sites in the UK, Woodwalton Fen and the River Ouse in York, until Steve Lane and Andy Brown first found a few individuals on our wetlands in 2017. Having surveyed the site and monitored them since then we are now trying to encourage a more stable population by tweaking the habitat creating rides through scrub to open the cover up’.

The Ely and District NSPCC Fundraising Team have held their Autumn Plant Stall on Downham Road again and raised, at time of going to press, over £202. Once more we would like to thank all those who donated plants and also those who bought them all. We are also pleased to announce that we will be delivering “Christmas Teas” again this year on December 18th. These would make excellent gifts for friends or neighbours or why not invite someone round and treat them to home made treats with a cuppa. All the monies raised go to NSPCC due to the kind team of volunteers who donate ingredients and local businesses that support us. To book your tea (we are limited to 100) please ring Johanna on 07912617135 or Wendy on 01353 664752. A Merry Christmas to you all!

Whilst there is still a fragile population at Welney, we are hoping some of these works may increase numbers and make a more robust population. Summer flooding is an ever present threat on the Ouse Washes, as we sadly see impacting our ground nesting birds in the spring and early summer. Thanks to a grant from the Anglian Water Flourishing Environment Fund through (or managed by) Cambridgeshire Community Foundation, we are able to try improving the habitat in this part of the reserve for invertebrates at a critical time for the Tansy beetle.

COMMUNITY NEWS

Littleport Lions club held a “Win Every Time” soft toy Tombola at Sohams Pumpkin fair at the end of September, and we raised some much needed funds after a break, because of Covid, of 18 months. The fair was very well attended with very nice weather on the day. Two local ladies deserve a mention for all of their hard work making soft toys for our club. A big thank you to Rosemary & Shirley for all of your wonderful efforts, it is very much appreciated. We have also restarted our used spectacle and hearing aid collection for third world countries and also homeless charities in the UK. You can leave them at Wades, Specsavers, Boots Opticans in Ely, Loach & Wade in Littleport & Soham and also Emmaus near Landbeach. We have resumed our Sunday afternoon meetings at Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport, if you would like to come along to find out what we do you and you would be very welcome with tea & biscuits to start the meeting. We usually meet on the 1st Sunday of the month. Contact our secretary at lionscluboflittleport@ gmail.com or phone 01353 664906 to arrange for someone to meet you and to explain what’s happening during the meeting.

ELY WILDSPACE IVY IS ABUZZ IN ELY In addition to providing cover for roosting birds, in autumn flowering Ivy is an important abundant late source of nectar and pollen for many pollinating insects. In Britain, over 100 insect species have been recorded using Ivy in this way. Ivy, which makes up many hedges in Ely as well as covering tree trunks and walls, produces scented spherical clusters of flowers in September and October (see photo with hoverfly Eristalis pertinax). An eye-catching user of Ivy is the Ivy Bee (Colletes hederae). The female is about the size of a Honey Bee worker, has striking black and white bands on its abdomen and a pile of reddish-brown hairs on its thorax. Females busily forage for pollen and nectar, attended by the smaller males. Ivy Bee was first found in Britain in 2001 on the Dorset coast, since when it has spread rapidly across most of England as far north as Newcastle. Ely Wildspace has become aware that the new owner of the West Pit at Roswell would like to limit public access to the site. We share the concern of those who enjoy accessing the area, firmly believing that maintaining public access to the Wildspace that is responsible and not detrimental to wildlife is fundamental to retaining public support for its conservation. In response, Ely Wildspace is in dialogue with the owner of the West Pit to try to maintain public access to the area. Get involved by visiting elywildspace.org.uk or email lpcre@elywildspace.org.uk. COMMUNITY NEWS

Introducing Cambridgeshire County Day celebrating Cambridgeshire and Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee The Lieutenancy of Cambridgeshire, in partnership with key organisations across the county, has launched the first ever Cambridgeshire County Day, taking place on Thursday 23rd June 2022 at the July Course, Newmarket, Cambridgeshire. Cambridgeshire County Day, which will be open to all communities, faiths and cultures that live within the county, will showcase the very best from the Cambridgeshire business, charity, community and public sectors. The Day will seek to inspire future generations with an unrivalled display of innovation, ambition, commitment and passion to encourage them to be the best they can be and connect them with future opportunities, while also showcasing key achievements in Cambridgeshire during the 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. In 2022, HM The Queen will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, 70 years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6 February 1952 at just 25 years of age. There will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world as communities and people come together to celebrate The Queen’s historic reign. The Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire, Mrs Julie Spence OBE QPM, Her Majesty The Queen’s representative in the county, comments: 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

“I am delighted to announce the launch of Cambridgeshire County Day, a key part of The Platinum Jubilee Celebrations. This is an unmissable opportunity to bring the county together, celebrate all that makes Cambridgeshire so unique, and to inspire the next generation while also reflecting on our amazing progress over the last 70 years.” Chairman of the Organising Committee, Chris Parkhouse, Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire says: “As well as providing a fantastic experience for businesses, charities and individuals, the event will raise essential funds for the new Regional Children’s Hospital; we are currently the only region without such a facility, so it is desperately needed. We also hope to raise funds for the Cambridgeshire Community Foundation LordLieutenant’s Fund, established to support those with less means to fully take part in county life.” Alongside showcasing the very best from Cambridgeshire, there will be the opportunity to: network, enjoy hospitality; watch and listen to demonstrations, music and theatre performances; attend a Garden Party; and be part of an exciting day of racing, among other activities for all to get involved with. Businesses and organisations interested in supporting, taking part or getting involved with Cambridgeshire County Day, as a sponsor or exhibitor, can find out more by emailing enquiries@cambridgeshirecountyday.org or visiting cambridgeshirecountyday.org

COMMUNITY NEWS

HELPING VOLUNTEERS BECOME MENTAL HEALTH AWARE.

JOY TO THE WORLD!

Many months ago, in the early days of the pandemic local Mutual Aid groups, Parish Councils and community groups started to come together with public sector partners, to provide collective support and learn from each other. Something which kept cropping up in one of our first conversations was a concern from volunteers who were seeing an increase in mental health issues, and were not sure how best to support people.

City of Ely Military Band

At the next meeting a local Mutual Aid group introduced Talking FreEly who kindly offered to lead four Mental Health Aware half day training sessions and partnered with East Cambs District Council to joint fund the project and meet all of the associated costs. The County Council promoted the opportunity and coordinated registration and as a result over 70 volunteers have now received the training free of charge (RRP £125). The project, led by Talking FreELY founder Tony Sigrist, delivered the first three sessions online and, to our great pleasure, were able to deliver the final session in person, hosted by Ely Library. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with volunteers feeling both supported and better equipped to support people with mental health challenges. Those who were trained told us how helpful their learning would be in everything from Foodbanks, to Girl Guide groups. Alongside these sessions, a conversation has been a growing between a wide range of partners about collaborating to support Mental Wellbeing in our communities across East Cambs. It’s early days, there is a real positive energy from a number of community organisations, schools, and public sector partners about working together, particularly in relation to child and adolescent mental wellbeing.
