Now we appear to be over the worst of the winter weather, we appear to be crawling into spring as visually the signs are becoming apparent that we have turned a corner. Here at the Elyi, we are quite pleased that our trusted deliverers won’t have to battle the elements to get the magazines to you as the weather gets warmer. Bridget and I have been producing the magazine for some years now and at times, have reviewed whether going digital is the answer, it’s certainly a cheaper option to produce as printing and delivery are our biggest overheads. There have been some casualties of the digital age, our much loved Weekly News being one and more recently NME which published for almost seven decades, a warning perhaps that our love affair with the print magazines is decreasing but nowhere near nearing its end. We provide the printed version of the Elyi Magazine FREE to all households in Ely and distribute additional copies in the surrounding villages. Feedback has been consistently good for the printed copy. We also produce our digital version, available from the ISSUU application This will always carry our popular ‘Groups and Meets’ pages when we don’t have room in the printed one. We believe in producing a magazine that reaches ALL of our community, making it more cohesive, integrated and reflective of the beautiful City we live in and we especially want to reach those Ely residents who are not regularly online. We also aim to provide a fantastic advertising facility for local business. When producing the magazine our Elyi Equation is simple: More advertisers = more local editorial = more local articles = more free space = more readers = more custom for advertisers = local business growth = affluent community = fulfilment, motivation, positivity, success and JOY! Please do give us feedback on facebook / elyimagazine, twitter @elyimagazine or via email to advertising@elyimagazine. Your thoughts are important to us. Wishing you all a very Happy Easter and see you in May.
Madeleine

CITY OF ELY BRANCH 1094 ATC SQUADRON AFFILIATED!

Richard Hobbs MAYOR OF ELY
I hope everyone has managed to keep warm as we enter into spring, a time of the year I always look forward to, fingers crossed for a warm spring. Pat and I would like to say a very big thank you to all those that supported our Ball, either by attending or donating wonderful draw prizes which enabled us to raise over £2000 for our chosen charity; Pos+Ability is a local run charity and will help with the understanding of living with dementia. As an ex boy scout I was very pleased to be invited to “Thinking Day”, a day when girl guides throughout the world think of others. I was very impressed with the activities organised e.g. Japanese which included learning to count, speak and trying sushi. I remember when I was a boy scout I was introduced to Lady Baden Powell when she visited Ely Cathedral, does anyone else remember it? I think it was around 1964ish I attended the Dementia café which is held in the cathedral centre and I was very happy to add my support to the organisers and those that care. On Monday 5th March it was the launch of the Ely Hero awards. Congratulations to all that took part last year, but let’s make the judges’ job even more difficult than last year and get nominating May I wish those organising every success! As from the 1st April the City Council takes on a new service that is Tourism, City Centre management and Oliver Cromwell House. A very big welcome to all those staff joining the City Team. David Martin, Chairman of City of Ely Branch and the Revd Alan Jesson TD, Squadron Chaplain, and also RBL Cambridgeshire County Chaplain, with the Certificate of Affiliation 1094 (City of Ely) Squadron ATC have been supporting the City of Ely Branch of the British Legion for a number of years. Not only have Cadets and Adult Volunteers taken part in Poppy Collections each year, but their Squadron HQ, RAF(H) Ely’s old NAAFI building, is used as a place to count the money and to store supplies. This long association was marked recently when the branch and squadron formally affiliated. The occasion was marked at the squadron’s awards evening when branch chairman, David Martin, and the OC, Flt Lt Nick Wilson, signed the two Certificates in front of a gathering consisting of a squadron parade of 40 Cadets, their Civilian Instructors and around 50 parents. The guests included the Mayor of Ely, Cllr Richard Hobbs, the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Mike Rouse and the Chairman of the Civilian Committee, Mr Neil Grimston. Each of Ely’s Cadets has now been provided with the Affiliated Unit badge kindly provided by the Branch. David Martin, The City of Ely RBL Branch Chairman, stated, “As an ex-cadet, here at 1094 Sqn, I am extremely proud to have been offered the chance to present this Affiliation certificate. This ensures we are now affiliated with both of our cadet organisations here in Ely and, I hope, is the beginning of further affiliations with our youth groups in the area... On behalf of the whole of the Ely Branch, we look forward to continuing to work together in support of each other’s goals and annual Remembrance Services and Parade.”
Foodbank Charity Trolley Dash at Waitrose Ely Hereward Rotary Club invited Ely Foodbank to go shopping at Waitrose to stock up on much needed items, paid for from money collected by Hereward at Christmas.
The Ely Foodbank has seen an increase of around 14% in users this winter, as people struggle with life crises and higher heating bills which are impacting on their ability to put food on the table. Amy commented “This is such a generous gift from Hereward Rotary and we thank them for their interest and support in our work.”
With over £300 to spend, Amy Lorimer and Jodie Thoday from the Foodbank joined the members of Ely Hereward to shop until they dropped, filling up with much-needed items like coffee, long life milk, tinned products and pasta sauces - which will keep the Foodbank shelves stocked up to see them through the busy winter after a hectic Christmas and New Year.
If you are interested in supporting the work of the Foodbank you can find out more at: ww.elyfoodbank.org.uk
THE ELYI MAGAZINE SPONSOR OF...
Neighbour of the Year! For the second year running, The Elyi magazine are proud to be sponsoring the “Neighbour of the Year” category at the Ely Hero Awards which are taking place on the 25th June 2018. Our very own Madeleine Funnell is also on the judging panel this year. The Ely Hero Awards were set up to recognise and honour those people in the local Ely community who are the most compassionate, determined, honourable, kind and supportive – the real unsung heroes of the local community. The awards highlight and celebrate these individuals and the amazing work they do within the community.
We told you this in the last issue but just as another reminder, there are 10 different award categories and nominees can be of any age, any walk of life, the only stipulation is they are to be inspiring to others and they must live or work within Ely and the surrounding villages. The categories include: • Smiliest Server • Colleague of the Year • Caring Companion • Most Amazing Professional • Neighbour of the Year • Community Champion • Best Teacher • Child of Achievement • Sporting Hero • The Ely Hero Award If you would like to nominate someone for the Ely Hero Awards, this can be made via the website: www.elyheroawards.org.uk/nominate There will also be entry via a coupon in the Ely Standard. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 5
Mike's Musings
Teacher, Author, Historian, Photographer, City Councillor and all round fount of knowledge, Mike Rouse shares with us a little of the history and culture of a life time spent in his beloved Ely.
The Corn Exchange and Public Room It is now 35 years since the old Corn Exchange and Public Room on the Market Place at Ely were demolished. Many local people looked on with sadness as the much loved buildings were reduced to rubble, but they had been promised a new building and shops which would revitalise the city centre. Powerful local farmers and Archer, the Ely Solicitors, were the main drivers behind the Corn Exchange Company, seizing on the coming of the railway to Ely in 1843. As the Cambridge Chronicle reported in November 1845: ‘an Exchange worthy of the wealth and importance of the district built in the centre, would be the greatest improvement that could possibly be made, and render the Market Place the pride of the town, and one of the best in the kingdom.’ The Ely Fairs and Cattle Market and Corn Exchange Company was formed in 1846 and land obtained for a cattle market bought nearby at the rear of the White Hart Inn. In 1847 the Corn Exchange opened. A poultry market at the rear was not successful and in 1855 was converted to a reading room. In about 1890 the reading room was transformed into the public room with an impressive frontage onto the Market Place. Both buildings were important in Ely’s business and social life.
66 || Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com
The public room was a second cinema for the Rex for many years, finally being known as the Exchange Cinema. By the early 1960s, however, the Corn Exchange Company was prepared to sell both buildings. The Urban District Council was not willing to pay Photo kindly loaned by Ann Dix and taken by her mother Phyllis Burrows the purchase price and with development companies very active in looking for redevelopment sites in towns up and down the country, the site was sold and redeveloped. To say that the new 1960s replacement building dismayed many people nationally and locally is an understatement. Iain Nair condemned it as ‘The Monster by the Minster’. In recent years several proposals have come forward to redevelop the building and put residential units on top, but these schemes have also attracted opposition. So what does the future hold? One hundred and seventy years after the Corn Exchange was built, will Ely again get a building that will be ‘the pride of the town’? Mike

World Thinking Day Celebration On Saturday 17th February around 200 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Senior Section and Trefoil Guild of Ely City District came together for an early World Thinking Day Celebration. The event opened with a colour party from each unit presenting their flags to the Mayor of Ely, followed by a renewal of promises by all present. After this nine candles were lit in honour of Girlguiding in the Region and across the wider World, including one candle lit especially to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Ely Trefoil Guild. Finally, a World Map was covered in shiny pennies, with donations from all attending the event. Once the formalities were over, the activities could begin. Guides and Seniors enjoyed a Wide Game in Ely City, while Rainbows and Brownies had a rotation of activities focussing on Japan; foodtasting, maps and flags, crafts, numbers and even learning to speak some of the language! Huge thanks go to Eleanor and Lisa Taylor (Bar Hill Brownies) and Azu and Maya Hatch who came to lead activities. At the end of the afternoon, everybody came together again to sing their “going-home” songs
and the event was over. Thank you to the Mayor of Ely for joining with our celebrations and thank you to all who helped to make the event a success. Girlguiding always needs more adult volunteers, whether as leaders or occasional helpers. In Ely there are 11 Rainbow, Brownie, Guide and Senior groups meeting throughout the week (not weekends) so you’re bound to find something that suits. If you think you could enable more girls to experience opportunities like this please visit: www.girlguiding.co.uk Following the links under “Get Involved” to find out more and register your interest. We look forward to meeting you soon!

Ely Folk Festival Ely Folk Festival is the local festival with a big heart as it hosts some of the best folk and roots music acts around in a family friendly environment on the edge of the wonderful cathedral city of Ely. Ely Folk Festival 2018 will take place 13-15 July. Festival headliners include the fantastic Scottish band Skipinnish; Steve Knightley from Show of Hands; folk rock royalty Lindisfarne; and the wonderful Northumbrian piper Kathryn Tickell with The Darkening. The 40th Annual Ely Model Railway Exhibition Whilst Harry and Megan will celebrate their wedding on the 19th May 2018, Ely & District Model Railway Club will be holding its 40th Annual Exhibition at the City of Ely Community College, Downham Road , Ely from 10.30am to 4.30pm. Interest in railways takes prime time television slots these days, and that increasing interest is reflected in our membership, which has been growing steadily, and we are happy to welcome new members. The hobby encompasses a variety of skills from the laying of track, the electronics involved in train control, the creation of scenery, from buildings to trees, the building or acquisition of locos and rolling stock, and research and study necessary to ensure we reflect the modelling period of time we have chosen. That can reflect steam trains, right through to modern high speed trains . Above all, a model railway club is a very social activity with members all working together on various aspects of layout building and operation in a purpose build clubhouse on the outskirts of Ely. Should you be interested in joining this progressive club, please get in touch. 26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Our 2018 Exhibition, 19th May 2018 at the City of Ely Community College, Downham Road, Ely will have 22 layouts to view , in a variety of scales, and will reflect the pinnacle of the hobby and what can be achieved. There will be a variety of modelling demonstrations, and trade stands too. There will be a live steam , ride on layout in the grounds, and a miniature traction engine train touring the grounds. The kids will love it. Entry is just £5 for adults , and £3 for children over 5. Membership enquiries can be made at the show, or through our club secretary on 01480 454857 or via email crofters@ntlworld.com / www.elymrc.org.uk

King’s Ely Riders Qualify for Royal Windsor Horse Show! KING’S Ely’s Equestrian Team has qualified for one of the UK’s largest horse shows. Four members of the team – George Hearn, Emily Gredley, Adele Shaw and Ryan De Sousa – travelled to The Jays Equestrian Centre in Bury St Edmunds earlier this month to compete in the show jumping qualifiers for this year’s Royal Windsor Horse Show. The team came second in the 90cms class out of more than 40 riders, and clear rounds by both Emily and Adele meant that the team finished on just four faults, earning them a place at the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May. George and his pony also produced a clear round in the 80cms class on the day and Adele’s clear round saw her winning fourth place individually. Manager of the King’s Ely Equestrian Team, Sue Cameron, said: “The qualifiers for the Royal Windsor Horse Show are highly competitive and there were a lot of talented riders there on the day. I am so proud of the team. They rode brilliantly and I cannot wait to support them all at Windsor in May!” 28 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Drayman’s Son Under New Management! Did you ever see such a thing in your life, as three blind mice? The three blind mice to which I refer in this instance are actually three grown human beer makers whose next venture is the Drayman’s Son; halfway down (or up) Forehill.
Not only do they have 20/20 vision for the future of their beers, they have firm plans to continue the Drayman’s great reputation as a small pub with a big heart for local traders and the community. As well as continuing to offer Ely Gins and the Bent & Cornwell Butcher’s pastries they are looking to other independant local companies to grow their stock, something I think every Ely dweller can get behind.
30 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Dan, one of the mice said. “We love what Jo & Andy have created here. We will do our best to keep up the good work!” Jo and Andy are off to sunnier climes but not before making sure that the pub was named City pub, Cider Pub and overall Ely and district CAMRA pub of the year. What an amazing job they have done. The future looks bright for these guys and their lovely staff. The South-African born pianist, Neil Hilgrove Colledge will be giving his 4th lunchtime recital at Ely Cathedral on Thursday May 24th, however this year’s concert date is by far the most significant. On May 24th internationally acclaimed musician, Neil Hilgrove Colledge will be giving a stunning concert of Brahms, Granados and Liszt in the South trancept of the Cathedral. For eldest son William this marks a special day as it falls on his 16th birthday. William has spent most of his life in Littleport and is a pupil at The Highfield Special School in Ely. He has severe learning difficulties, epilepsy and autism but loves swimming and trampolining and has been able
to regularly enjoy these activities during his time at Highfields. Neil is clearly into musical celebrations and he marked his half century with a performance at the Cathedral in 2016. This performance was also dedicated to the singer David Bowie who was one of his musical heroes, and who sadly died on the actual day of his 50th birthday. As a concert pianist, Neil is very much in demand and is delighted to be performing at Ely again. He enjoys the rare

Courses for Adults In Ely Women War Artists with tutor Sue Pownall
In many accounts of the art of war, women war artists are notable in their absence; this course sets out to address that balance. Each week covers different artists, with a bias towards British painters, but not exclusively. You will look at their work both before and after the war they chronicled, as well as the work produced to reflect the war. The artworks looked at will be in different media, ranging from pencil to oils as well as encompassing print mediums and more. This art appreciation course will set all this within the historical context. Six lectures for £43.20* Starting Wednesday, 18 April 2018, 10.15am to 12.15pm at the Ely Library For more information please contact Allison Morris: allisonmorris265@hotmail.com *Fee remission available for students on certain benefits or low incomes

Ely Eel Festival Ely is preparing itself once again for its four day extravaganza to celebrate the origins of the humble eel. Organised by the Visit Ely team, Ely’s Eel Festival Weekend runs from 4th to 7th May. This year, as always, we see the return of the Eel Food Safari which runs all weekend where a selection of local food outlets provide special dishes inspired by the eel theme. The Eel Parade kicks off Saturday’s Eel Day when we celebrate 15 years, with a colourful array of eels processing through Ely’s High Street, down to the river where a whole host of eel related activities take place. Special highlights include the British Town Criers’ Championships and the World Eel Throwing Competition (no eels will be harmed in this competition, just stuffed toys!). Can you beat the World Record of over 17 metres? The full programme of arena events includes music, dancing, a living history encampment and a street food scene (including eels!). Rounding up the weekend is the ever popular two day Food and Drink Festival now in its fifth year. Over 75 artisan and specialist food and drink traders will be showcasing their wares.
We have an amazing Street Food Scene, comprising of a range of culinary delights which will tantalise your taste buds with the unusual, yet exquisitely crafted combinations. We also have a beer tent and cocktail bar with some easy listening, live music to enjoy. Back on St Mary’s Green is our Kitchen Pantry with a selection of goodies to help stock your pantry, some handy gadgets and beautiful kitchenware along with a seating area and some scrumptious light bites. This year we welcome into our fabulous Cookery Theatre the celebrity haute cuisine teacher, Rosemary Shrager and the original TV Chef, Brian Turner who will be demonstrating a variety of dishes alongside some of our much loved local chefs. Also the chance to personally meet and greet our celebrity chefs for a Q&A hour plus book signings at our “In Conversation With” sessions which will be held at Oliver Cromwell’s House. Check out our website for booking details. All in all, Ely will make the perfect place for a Spring Bank Holiday visit. New Ely Mini Markets
Ely Markets is introducing new extra “Mini-Markets” on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays which will bring together a selection of stalls selling essentials like fruit, vegetables, coffee and bread. “We want to make our markets more useful and convenient than ever before,” says Julia Davis of Ely Markets. The new Mini-Markets will take place every Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. The smaller extra markets will complement the established successful main markets on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays and will offer daily essentials such as fruit and vegetables, fish, flowers, bread, cheese and more. Buying little and often from a local market isn’t just convenient. It also reduces food waste and cuts down on packaging. Ely Market will be encouraging their shoppers to help them make their markets as eco-friendly as possible. 36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
“We want our markets to lead the way in helping local residents to take a more thoughtful approach to their shopping,” says Julia. “If people in Ely choose to make a few small changes to the way they shop then together we can make a big difference. Remember your shopping bags on market days and bring along a re-usable coffee cup too. We’d love to see people start bringing their own containers for cakes and pastries.” The new Mini-Markets begin on Tuesday 3rd April 2018 and will trade from 8.30am – 3.30pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On Wednesday 4th April there will be a special launch day to coincide with the Easter school holiday. There will be extra stalls, activities and the chance to meet Michael Recycle, Ely’s local ecohero, and to win an Ely Markets “Bring Your Own” goody bag
