As we career headlong into the festive and panto season, I am tempted to entertain you with a few Christmas crackers...jokes that is! How about this one. “How will Christmas dinner be different after Brexit? ..... “No Brussels!” It’s the way I tell em clearly my talents lie elsewhere! We have a full magazine for you again this month. It’s been busy, but that’s the way we like it. Hopefully we will see some of you at the KD panto and other events around the city. You can win a family ticket by entering our competition on Facebook. Please do say hello if you see us as we love a good natter and we always like to put a face to a name or email address. Madeleine and I would like to wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year! best wishes from Bridget & Madeleine and all in the Elyi Team

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY A very big thank you to all who turned up on the Sunday 22nd October to help with the litter pick, what a great job you all did. Also, to Mr Simm who turned up with a box of sweeties to keep us going. Apple Festival was very well attended and enjoyed by all ages. My congratulations to Tracey and Aileen and their very small team for organising another successful event and I look forward to next year. Pat and I attended the Royal Navy Association Trafalgar Dinner. This could have been a sad event as this was to be its last. But in true naval tradition they remembered the good times and those wonderful stories of their seafaring days, all washed down with Pussers rum. I was invited to the launch of the Ely and District Table Tennis club who meet at Witchford College to celebrate their grant from Sport England. The club put on a demonstration of the talent within the club. I was given the opportunity to play a game, as I was at one time junior champion of Ely, I now realise this was a long time ago. I look forward seeing this club go from strength to strength.

We welcomed Kammerkor, a choir from our twin city Ribe in Denmark. They gave two concerts, one lunchtime in the Lady Chapel which was very moving, they captured the feel for the Lady Chapel. The second concert was with Ely Choral Society which was equally moving. Congratulations to the Choral Society for a truly wonderful choral weekend. The Remembrance weekend started for me on the Friday when I was invited to attend the Witchford College Remembrance Service and to unveil a newly erected Remembrance Wall. It was an honour to be asked and I must congratulate Ed Quzman as he not only helped raise the finances but helped build the wall. This was a very proud moment for Ed’s parents and the school. Well done Ed and all those involved. On the 11th and 12th we in Ely came together to remember those that gave their lives in all conflicts. The turnout on both occasions truly reflects our continued gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you, the Royal British Legion, for a very well organised occasion and also to the City of Ely Military band for their continued support. Pat and I wish you all compliments of the season. Regards Mayor Richard

Print My Part is Ely’s first 3D printing bureau service, set up to provide high quality parts to the technology hub of Cambridgeshire as well as clients nationwide. The Print My Part HQ is home to a state of the art professional 3D printer which uses the FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) printing process; this ensures prints are robust and functional, whilst ensuring a high quality surface finish.

only in high-tech companies, but also for artists, hobbyists and individuals. Whether you need parts for a DIY project or a small scale production run, we welcome you to get in touch to discuss how 3D printing can bring your ideas and parts to life.” Print My Parts aims to offer the ultimate 3D printing service, often turning models around within just 24 hours. Jack explains “Rather than pricing jobs on part volume, we review every job individually, not only does this result in lower prices, but it also allows us to offer a detailed review of every part we receive. This means we can offer complete transparency in both price and ‘printability’.” To submit parts for an online quote or for more information about Print My Part, please visit:www.printmypart.co.uk or contact Jack at: info@printmypart.co.uk.

The start up is seeking work from the local community and local businesses. That said, we would love to work with creative members of the local community. 3D printing has an endless number of uses not

LUCY FRAZER MP I wanted to take the opportunity to wish all my constituents a merry Christmas and a happy new year. 2017 has flown by! I have been pursuing with vigour the roll out of superfast broadband across the constituency and am campaigning to get South East Cambridgeshire selected as a testbed for the trialing of industrial 5G.

my many visits to Ely College and Kings’ Ely. I’ve been pleased to meet many more of you at leisure - perhaps whilst admiring a Hockney creation at Babylon Arts, or whilst at the Ely Potato Race - I never pass up the chance to hear about any issues constituents may have. I have also visited Deanta UK, Ellutia, Advanced Aircraft Training Company, National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB), Barcham Trees, Standen Engineering, Faerch Plast, DAS International, and the local Ladbrokes and Nationwide Building Society.

Education is also a passion of mine and I have been fighting for fairer funding for our schools. I take every opportunity to engage with schools and the Secretary of State to ensure our require-ments are front of mind. I welcome the recent announcement of £3.1 million more for our constitu-ency and will continue to press for our schools. I am also working closely with local businesses on support for STEM subjects and am driving a project to reduce the costs of teacher recruitment. Elsewhere, Ely is experiencing significant growth with the new leisure park and the connection to Cambridge North station now completed. Ely Southern Bypass is on target to be delivered during 2018; the start of works in March was the culmination of a great deal of work and I’m delighted construction of the Bypass is now underway. Furthermore, in February we welcomed the news that a Local Urgent Care Service was to be piloted at the Princess of Wales Hospital. This was in response to a very well run local campaign that bolstered the work I and others had been doing to support the cause in Parliament. I enjoy every opportunity I have to meet with constituents and local businesses, welcoming visitors to Westminster - the Ely branch of the Mothers' Union and the Isle of Ely Federation’s Women’s Institute to name but a few. I also enjoyed speaking at Ely Hereward Rotary Club and

On a final note, this year’s Christmas card will once again feature the artwork of one of our talented primary school children; every card will carry the ‘EACH’ logo, raising awareness of less fortunate children in our midst. I am so grateful for all the support I receive from constituents young and old and I look forward to working as hard as I can on your behalf in 2018! GOOGLE AND MICROSOFT VISIT ELY FOR EAST CAMBS BUSINESS BOOST 2017 Lucy Frazer MP and Mayor James Palmer joined global giants, Microsoft and Google, in Ely on 10th November to meet and talk to 227 local businesses for the first East Cambs Business Boost event held at The Maltings. East Cambs Business Boost 2017, organised by East Cambridgeshire District Council’s Enterprise East Cambridgeshire team, The Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough LEP, Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, the Federation of Small Businesses and Emerald Frog Marketing, consisted of exhibition networking coupled with business support and funding clinics held by local financial experts. Microsoft and Google also delivered keynote sales and marketing seminars. Lis Every, Vice Chair of East Cambridgeshire District Council said: “The first East Cambs Business Boost event has been a huge success with a wealth of advice and networking opportunities for local business owners to help them take their businesses to the next level for the benefit of the growing East Cambs economy. The support of Lucy Frazer MP and Mayor James Palmer for the event, alongside highly engaging and informative sales and marketing masterclasses from world-leaders, Microsoft and Google, is of great advantage to East Cambridgeshire’s business community.”

12 | | Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine | | www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com 12

Laura Welham-Halstead, Head of Communications and Connectivity at Greater Cambridge Greater Peterborough Local Enterprise Partnership said: “We are delighted Microsoft and Google took part in our first East Cambs Business Boost event and took the time to engage with local businesses and show them how to accelerate their sales and marketing functionality. The “Launch Zone”, where businesses, from start- ups and entrepreneurs through to more established small and mediumsized businesses gained financial advice, was also a big hit as experts shared their knowledge and support. “The East Cambs Business Boost event is an enviable asset to the Ely area. Thanks to Bridge Fibre, our main sponsor, and Grovemere Property, PEM, Natwest, Ellgia Recycling and Premier Signs for their excellent support and making the day a highly enjoyable one. We look forward to East Cambs Business Boost 2018”.

With the mowing season coming to an end, are you tempted to shove your mower into the shed and forget about it until March? If this sounds familiar, please don't. Give it the TLC it deserves by preparing it for storage over winter, so that it's ready to work for you in the spring. Brush or hose off any leaves, grass or mud from your mower tipping back the handles to the ground in order to remove any grass from under the deck which will rust a metal mower. Run your mower out of fuel on your last cut or use a petrol stabiliser. Old petrol deteriorates and thickens to a varnish. It also hardens rubber and plastic parts making them brittle, coats linkages and blocks the fine holes in carburettor jets causing difficulties with starting and running your equipment. If you are confident and have the time you could service your own mower, although Fenland Spirit Services can do this for you at a great price.

Professional gutter clearing at a fixed price We clear gutters from the ground using a vacuum. Our extendable poles can reach over extensions & conservatories A built in camera ensures no debris is left behind

Gutter clearing is an annual maintenance task often overlooked. Leaking gutters can cause extensive water damage. Avoid costly repairs - Book today!

We service all kinds of garden equipment and small engined machinery from strimmers through lawnmowers and wacker plates to all makes of ride-on mower. We are a family run business with Stuart, a fully qualified horticultural engineer leading a small but growing team including an apprentice. As a local, dedicated and independent business we care about building a long lasting relationship with our customers. We do this by providing a professional service to both you and your machinery, communicating regularly to manage your expectations and completing work timely at a reasonable cost. Don't leave your mower out in the cold this winter, give it the TLC it deserves by giving us a call. Fenland Spirit Services 07753836499

Another Happy Customer... We have been advertising in the Elyi magazine for about 2 years and we have had lots of customers contact us after seeing our advert in the magazine. For our business, an advert in Elyi is money well spent, as we are local and our regular appearance in the magazine means potential customers are aware of our business and can get in touch easily if and when they need our services. Along with some great articles, the adverts in Elyi magazine provide a useful directory to the people of Ely and the surrounding villages, so it’s a great place for us to advertise as it connects us to the right market. ROYAL NAVAL ASSOCIATION ELY BRANCH CLOSES AFTER 30 YEARS It is with great sadness that the City of Ely Branch of the Royal Naval Association after 30 years will de-commission at the end of the year 2017, unfortunately nature has taken its course. No doubt we will be remembered from over the years for our Trafalgar Day balls in the Maltings and the Beet Club, where up to 140 locals and dignatories would attend.

Another distinguished member of the Branch was the Rt.Rev.Peter Walker Bishop of Ely who was an ex war-time Naval man and gave the first service at our Dedication as a Branch. I would like to give a big thankyou to those who were past members of the Branch and all those who have shown an interest in us. Yours Aye (as we say)

Our present Mayor and Mayoress Richard and Pat Hobbs were invited to our last Trafalgar dinner at the Cutter Inn on the 21st October in memory of his father Maurice who was also a past Mayor and one of the founder members of the Branch, along with such characters as Bert Herne past landlord of the High Flyer who with a strong voice would give renditions of "Land of Hope and Glory" etc at the balls.

We recognise the right of people to be treated with fairness, respect and dignity at all stages of their lives Vera James House is a residential care home for older people in the centre of Ely with 42 en-suite rooms, including a dementia care wing. We aim to make people feel at home and our dedicated, highly trained team of staff offers care and support, whilst ensuring residents are able to maintain their independence as far as possible. In addition, older residents who live in Ely can also benefit from using our local community services , we can help with the following: Respite stay—before making that decision to move into full time care or maybe your family are going away on holiday come and stay with us for a short break  Housekeeping—from cleaning and ironing to bed changing and shopping  Meals service—nutritious, hot lunchtime meal delivered to your door  Sitting service—a visit from our experienced staff gives family carers time to themselves To find out more, please call us at Vera James House on 01353 661113 or email: verajameshouse@chsgroup.org.uk 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

BE PART OF THE TEAM SUPPORTING JUBILEE GARDENS FOR ALL TO ENJOY! Do you walk through Jubilee Gardens? If so I wonder if you have noticed the changes that have been made and are continuing. The largest of these is in the planting of the Queen’s Wood; to celebrate Her Majesty’s 90th birthday. An area, at Broad Street end, has been cleared of overgrown shrubs; a beech hedge planted next to our neighbours with some new trees. The Friends of Jubilee Garden have paid for these species trees which are supplied by Barcham Tree Specialist. Some of these are already in and the rest will be planted on December 14th and there is a display in the library of the chosen trees. To complete the wood, East Cambridgeshire District Council will add shrubs and bulbs. This has been an expensive cooperative enterprise but one we feel will be appreciated by the people of Ely and our visitors.

The Friends work closely with E.C.D.C in the garden with a working party each month, weeding, pruning and planting. In the past the Friends have undertaken various projects, introducing art, bird boxes and the play area. Some of the Friends are able to work in the garden, others raise money and all pay £5 per annum to be ‘a friend’. If you would like to join us please contact Ann Laird: ann.laird62@btinternet.com. TOPPINGS & COMPANY CHRISTMAS BOOK SUGGESTIONS 2017 has been a wonderful year for books, with publishers producing beautiful editions across all genres. Here, the booksellers at Topping & Company in Ely give a round-up of some of their highlights, which will make perfect Christmas gifts for the bookworms in your life. Two giants of the fiction scene, Robert Harris and Ali Smith, have produced real treats: Munich is a classic story of espionage, set in the run up to the Second World War, and written with Harris’s consummate story-telling skill. Ali Smith's Winter, the second novel in her seasonal quartet, is thought-provoking, timely and exquisitely written – a must for lovers of quality literary fiction – and a beautiful looking book, too. Several astounding children's books have come into being this year, a bookshop favourite is The Lost Words, by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. other: it seeks to capture and teach children about the magic of nature through 'word spells' and the most beautiful large-scale illustrations. It's an instant classic and will be treasured. Another highlight is beloved author's Oliver Jeffers's latest treat for younger children; called Here We Are, it was written to welcome

his son into the world, and is a warm, kind, compassionate guide to living on our planet. The question of what to give hard-to-buy-for adults can be solved by choosing from this year’s wonderful biographies. Two standouts are Mr Lear by Jenny Uglow, and Citizen Clem by John Bew – both remarkable examples of biographical writing. Beautiful cookery books and excellent food writing never fail to please, and At My Table and Cheese by Nigella Lawson and Michel Roux Senior, respectively, will ensure happy recipients and delicious festive dinners. The booksellers at Topping & Company are always on hand for a chat and advice (with coffee!), and they hope to welcome you to the bookshop soon.

THE REWARDS OF BEING A HOST With the number of international students coming to UK boarding schools, the need for educational guardians is increasing, and with this host families to look after them when they are unable to travel home during the short school holidays.

The experience that a child has when staying with a host can bring life long friendships., from learning to adapt to life in the beautiful English countryside, to life in a large busy city, from learning to bake bread to sharing with your host how to cook the best noodles! Why not register for this wonderful experience? www.collegeguardian.co.uk

Families with children of their own, those with “empty nest syndrome” grandparents, single parents, to name a few, all benefit from hosting international students. From a cultural or language perspective, offering a caring home to a students will certainly help to enhance their learning experience and life in the UK. Hosting can be short term from just a few weekends a year or half term and some of the longer school holidays.

BE A SCHOOL GOVERNOR Are you interested in education and how schools work? Would you like to make a positive difference to the life chances of children? Do you want to share your skills to make that difference? Would you enjoy being part of a team that provides critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards? If you can say ‘yes’ to all of these, consider investigating the role and putting yourself forward as a governor at Ely St John’s Community Primary School. Being a governor is a real commitment, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It requires regular attendance at formal meetings, which are usually in the evening, although getting to know the school well requires some planned time in school during the day. The best way to find out about the role and why people do it is to talk to someone who is already a governor. You may be surprised how many of your acquaintances have this experience. You could also contact Ms Liz Bassett, the head teacher, who will be only too happy to talk to you. Schools look for a variety of experience and skills across their governing body, but may well also be seeking specific skills, eg finance or business. Training is important for all governors and is readily available. We are currently looking for a co-opted Governor who may well represent different areas of the community. These will be selected by our governing body. Does the role interest you? Do you want to find out more information? If so, take the first step and contact us on office@elystjohns.cambs.sch.uk and express your interest. We will be pleased to talk to you and we will send you all the information you need to make the decision whether to apply. www.elyimagazine.com || Elyi Elyi Magazine Magazine || 43 43 www.elyimagazine.com

Want to treat yourself to the best turkey for Christmas? Why not try one of our Free Range Norfolk Black Turkeys www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk

Why are our turkeys so amazing?     

They are slow growing – allowed to mature as nature intended They are free range – allowed to exhibit natural behaviours They put down a good layer of fat – meaning they are self-basting They are hand plucked – someone has taken the time to carefully prepare your bird They are dry aged – they have hung for a minimum of 7 days allowing the flavour to develop

And don’t just take our word for it, here is some feedback from some of our wonderful customers: “For 32 years of married life we have had the obligatory turkey at Christmas although we always complain it is dry and tasteless. Not this year – thank you for an absolutely fantastic turkey – tasty and moist. We’ll be back again next year!” - Nick “I have been meaning to write and say how much we thoroughly enjoyed our turkey. It is the first time we bought through yourselves and I can honestly say it is the best turkey we have ever had. I look forward to ordering from you again in the future.” – Kathleen Make sure you don’t miss out, why not order one from our website today? www.freerangechristmasturkey.co.uk
