Dear Readers Well, Ely celebrated the Platinum Jubilee in style! From the Civic celebrations over the bank holiday period to the smaller scale family gatherings, it certainly was an event to remember. We have a selection of pictures and reports included in this issue but, of course, couldn't possibly feature everything. Remember, with just me at the helm much of the Elyi content is generated by you so please do always feel free to send in community news and events. Many of the articles I received for this issue start with the words "We're back" heralding the return of Aquafest, The Ely Hero Awards, Ely Pride and the great news that Ely Fireworks are on this year. For the first time in many years the fireworks actually happen on 5th November too! We love our front cover picture from the Ely market team. The market really seems to be going from strength to strength with the lovely range of stalls and exciting seasonal innovations like the very successful "Foodie Fridays" bringing the community together at the end of the week. Well done market team! Finally, thank you to everyone who contributed to our pages remembering Mike Rouse who passed away recently. An amazing man who gave so generously of his time and talents.

Our volunteers are the heart of our charity. To assist you to fulfil the role, full training and ongoing support will be provided by a designated member of staff. When you become a RBL volunteer, you become part of a committed and friendly team, gain skills and experience to build your cv, and have the opportunity to make a real difference to the Armed Forces Community. The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal raises money to help and support the Armed Forces Community. We help with care and independent living, financial guidance, physical and mental wellbeing, as well as lots of other ways. Due to retirement, we are urgently looking for a Poppy Appeal Organiser to co-ordinate and deliver the Appeal in Ely. This is a voluntary role involving publicising, promoting, and organising the Poppy Appeal in Ely, ordering merchandise, storage and distribution of poppies and other materials for the Appeal, co-ordinating volunteers, banking donations and providing timely and accurate records. Ideally, we are looking for a volunteer that can drive, with access to a vehicle, and is computer literate.
Launch day for the Poppy Appeal is Thursday 27th Oct and the last day of the Appeal is Remembrance Sunday 13th November 2022. 'Eel-izabeth' paraded through Ely High Street to commemorate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
On the morning of Sunday 5th June, Ely's annual Eel Parade took place, led by a new 12m long carnival eel named ‘Eel-izabeth’ to mark the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The rain subsided just as the Eel Parade started from Ely Cathedral at 10.30am and wiggled its way down the High Street and Forehill to the river, where it came to a stop in Jubilee Gardens, where Visit Ely had organised food stalls and entertainment. Babylon ARTS commissioned artist Cary Outis to create the eel, with help from Year 5 pupils at Littleport Community Primary School. Over two days in May, 60 pupils got to work tie-dyeing three sections of five metres of cotton muslin to make up the body of the eel. Chief Executive of Babylon ARTS, Claire Somerville said “We would like to say a big thank you to Cary and the Kingfisher and Nightjar classes and their teachers at Littleport Primary School for all their help in making our new carnival eel.” The students also used tie-dyeing on thicker cotton, which was used to create individual flags that the students proudly waved as part of the parade procession. The creation of ‘Eel-izabeth’ was thanks to funding from Arts Council England's Jubliee Fund through Cambridgeshire Community Foundation. Tourism and Town Centres Manager Anna Bennett said, “Eel-izabeth is the perfect example of 8 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
co-working, partners coming together to create a lasting monument to the wonderful Platinum Jubilee Celebrations here in the City of Ely. What better than this beautiful Eel to celebrate the return of the Eel Parade after three years? Truly a moment that will live on in many memories.” Eel-izabeth will make another appearance at The Carnival of Animals on Friday 1st July, an event which marks the end of Ely Arts Festival 2022. THE JUBILEE OAK
Have you seen the magnificent 'Jubilee Oak Table' currently on display in Ely Cathedral? Here is a bit of the history behind it: Photo: Matt Power - Bav Media
FALKLANDS 40TH ANNIVERSARY The 40th Anniversary of the Falklands Conflict was commemorated by the City of Ely in a wreath laying Ceremony. Wreaths were laid by Cllr Alan Sharp (ECDC Chairman), Cllr Richard Morgan (City of Ely Mayor), Falklands Veterans Andrew Bish & Andy Phipps, William Scoular (The British Airborne Forces Club) and Sue Reeder (Royal British Legion) in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice during the Falklands Conflict. Standard Bearers were represented for the Parachute Regiment, Tom Brown, and City of Ely RBL, David Martin, with Laurine Green playing the Last Post and Reveille on behalf of the City of Ely Military Band. The story begins 5000 years ago when, deep inside the East Anglian Fenland Basin, an incredible ancient high forest once stood. Over time, and a rise in sea level, these spectacular Oak trees fell into the silt of the flooded forest floor where they have been preserved like black treasure in the peat. In 2012 Hamish Low and his team made an incredible discovery. At over 13 metres long and perfectly preserved they found the buried giant of that ancient high forest. Against all odds, they successfully milled and dried 'The Jubilee Oak' and the team of master craftsmen gave this piece of history a magnificent new legacy. From that tree The Fenland Black Oak Project have created a unique table for the nation. The table will be on display in the Cathedral until March 2023. https://www.thefenlandblackoakproject.co.uk/ 12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

GET READY TO NOMINATE ELY HERO AWARDS LAUNCH FOR 2022! Seventy excited guests gathered for the official launch party of Ely Hero Awards 2022, Season 5 at The Poets House Hotel on the evening of Monday 13th June. The launch was attended by Mrs Sue Freestone, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and the new Mayor of Ely, Mr Richard Rogers. Business Sponsors, Judges and previous winners were invited to join in the celebrations to mark the launch of this year’s community event. Guests were thrilled to be back together, there was a palpable buzz in the room which created a very happy and vibrant evening. Goodie bags were distributed and supplied by ReImagine Resource Centre sealed with a quote that said “ Happiness Blooms where Seeds of Love and Joy are Planted” perfectly encapsulating the spirit of the event. The initiative was set up 6 years ago and all individuals who live and work in Ely and the surrounding villages are encouraged to nominate a local Hero, a person who goes above and beyond for others in a variety of settings. With 10 Categories in which to nominate, the Awards are designed to shine a light on Heroes of the community and reward them for the amazing things they do. You can nominate your Hero at www.elyheroawards.org.uk until 31st July 2022. A judging panel will shortlist nominees and invite 3 finalists in each Category to a glitzy Award Ceremony held in September at The Maltings in Ely where the Category Winners will be Crowned. New for this year, the event will be Black Tie, 14 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
giving an opportunity for guests to have a very special celebratory evening, fit for a Hero! Organisers of the event said “We are beyond excited to be able to bring this event back to the community following a challenging few years, local businesses have once again pledged their unwavering support and without that support the event would not be possible. Ely Hero Awards has woven itself beautifully into the fabric of the community, it has become a highlight of the calendar and to be able to continue with the event is very valuable. The team sincerely thank everyone that is involved in making the event possible” Each year Ely Hero Awards choose a small local charity in which to support, and this year’s Charity is Cambridge Expressive Arts and Counselling Centre. Eleanor Port-Burke presented to the guests giving an overview of the service and its achievements. A service user shared her personal experience of using the service and the incredible effects on her family – she brought the house to tears describing CEACC as a “Life-line”. Remember to nominate your Hero for them to be in with a chance of being rewarded for their good works!

“IT’S JUST A JUMP TO THE LEFT…” Following the success of April’s litter pick after the Great British Spring Clean, Ely City WI “jumped to the left and stepped to the right” to do the litter pick again! It’s clear to see that Ely City WI are striding ahead and most definitely not in a ‘time warp’! With the help of equipment provided by Ely Litter Pickers five members gathered at the Maltings and worked on the Riverside area. Given the popularity of this area, the beautiful weather and the most recent celebrations, the litter pickers found that there was very little litter and managed to gather their rubbish in to one bag. However, it’s not the quantity it’s the, er, quality and some rather interesting objects were retrieved including a fingernail (false), a giraffe (toy) and a cat collar but no cat!
the campaigns the WI support to tackle issues that matter to our members, please take look here: www.thewi.org.uk/campaigns The next group litter pick will take place in September. If you would like to get involved, then why not join us? You can visit our website: https://wielycity.wixsite.com/home or find us on Facebook just search Ely City WI). PRIDE IN ELY
Well folks, we’re back! Pride in Ely will be on August 6th and is going to be bigger than ever this year, with a day of family fun, stalls, acts and food/ drink between The Maltings and Jubilee Gardens! Entrance will be free and all are welcome to attend – make sure you save the date! Maggie, Sue, Linnie, Helen and Kaye agreed that they are passionate about making Ely a cleaner place and, with many more people spending time in their local area over the past couple of years; seeing the same spaces and places it is easy to notice what is around us and what a difference it can make to get involved in clearing up. “It feels good to do my bit and it does make a difference. It may not be my rubbish, but it is our community space and if we can all do something, no matter how small, we can help keep our environment safe and tidy”. This is just one of the many campaigns that Ely City WI get involved with, to find out more about 16 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELY TENNIS CLUB AND INSPIRE2COACH SERVES UP A SMASHING MINIONS THEMED COACHING SESSION FOR ELY YOUNGSTERS The recent Minions themed session at Ely Tennis Club has proved so popular that coach, Matt had to work to find ways of including more attendees than were originally expected so that nobody missed out!
One parent told us “It’s such a good idea to theme some of these sessions, it really connects with the kids and gives them something familiar to engage with. Once they are playing though, it’s almost all about the tennis.” Matt from inspire2coach said “It was such a fun session; all of the kids were on great form and really seemed to enjoy the fact that everything was themed around something that they knew really well. Thanks to them all for being such good fun to work with. We'd love to welcome more children and families from the Ely community to come and try tennis with us throughout the summer!” To find out more about children’s lessons at Ely Tennis Club, contact Matt Lancaster via matt@ i2ctennis.co.uk, or elytennisclub@hotmail.co.uk.
The lucky boys and girls were treated to a series of games and activities that were inspired by the cheeky yellow characters from the Universal Pictures movie series, and the idea proved particularly popular due to the upcoming release of The Rise of Gru movie, in July. The games included Minion dodgeball, Minion coconuts, Tennis cricket, Minion mash up, Tennis Golf, Rack-attack and Magic Minions. Each lucky attendee left with a Minions Party Pack. The event was part of a national promotion campaign, set up by Wilson, the world’s leading tennis brand, that is aiming to encourage more children and families to try tennis. 18 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
DON'T FORGET THE GROWN UPS! Ely Tennis Club Ladies doubles 1st team and Men's doubles 2nd team continue to top the Cambs Dunlop Summer League tables and the Men’s 3rd teams are celebrating their June victory over David Lloyd who are just one place ahead of them in Division 10. It’s highly likely that at least some of this success is attributable to the recent doubles Saturday coaching clinics offered by the new team from inspire2coach, so far they have focussed on tactics for men’s, women’s and mixed doubles, and serving and returning and will move on to improving baseline games and net games in the weeks ahead. Non-members are always welcome at the clinics, please contact elytennisclub@ hotmail.co.uk if you would like to join in or find out more about playing tennis with us.

The Ely and District NSPCC Fundraising group decided to celebrate both the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and National Childhood Day, 11th. June, by holding a Story Writing Competition for both adults and children.

They asked the “grown ups” to tell why they thought “Childhood was precious” and for some it brought back happy memories of sunny days and others what a journey “Childhood” had been. For the children it was a a journey of imagination. We asked them to tell us what they would do if they were “Queen or King for a day”. We were greatly assisted by our judges: Jim Kelly, a local author; Ian Smith, a retired languages teacher; Joanne Rutherford of Toppings; Louise Aldridge, County Librarian for children and Bridget Hickish, Editor of Elyi. We received kind donations of prizes by Ely Toppings Bookshop. The winners were presented with their prizes by our new Mayor of the City of Ely and his Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs. Richard Morgen at Ely Library. Our photo shows the adult prize winners Revd. Bernard Arnold, Rosemary Westwell and Jeanette Moser. Further details can be found of the work of this very active NSPCC group, and how to contact us to volunteer, on their new Facebook page - Ely and District NSPCC Fundraising Group.

ELY OPEN GARDENS On June 12th we had the most wonderful and successful day opening our gardens. From 12 noon when we opened right up until 6 pm when we closed we welcomed a record number of visitors through our garden gates. Once we have counted the total of the funds raised for the NGS charities we will let you know! A very big thank you for all those that came for you outstanding generosity for charity, your love of our gardens, your endless questions and conversations about plants, your buying of plants to take home and your eating of much cake. This is exactly what garden open days are all about!
Jane Rich, CEO of Cambridge Community Arts, said: “We bring people together in small groups in the community, to learn and practice all forms of art. They gain in confidence, improve their mental health, make friends and in some cases get back to work”. Come along to their Open Day on Tuesday 12 July 1-4pm at Arbury Community Centre, Campkin Road, Cambridge CB4 2LD, when people will have the chance to talk to course tutors, staff and past learners to find out more. Full details and application form can be found on: www.camcommarts.org.uk or phone 07763 280029. 22 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Your garden visits really help change lives; the entrance fees all go to the National Garden Scheme to be distributed to charities. Last year the NGS Scheme raised over three million pounds. No mean feat when you consider the
difficulties that we had to overcome in order to open at all. £525,000 went to Marie Curie, £500,000 went to Macmillan Cancer Support, and £500,000 to Hospice UK to name but three. Details of donations can be found at ngs.org.uk/ beneficiaries. Have a look. It’s not just the big charities. Details of our entry can be found on the NGS national website. We also have a local website, www.elyopengardens.com with details and pictures of gardens past and present.
Nightingales have been arriving at Roswell pits (usually near Kiln Lane) from their wintering grounds in tropical Africa almost every spring. However, they hadn’t stayed to breed for several years, including last year’s very vocal male (photo) The nightingale in Britain is under serious threat, one of the reasons being the loss of habitat. They need a well-defined structure of scrubby thicket to set up their territories, bare ground for feeding and thick vegetation for the low-level nest. To encourage breeding, Ely Wildspace volunteers, in consultation with Natural England, have created new habitat to suit nightingales, in an area of damp woodland owned by Ely Wildspace on the east side of the Ely Sailing Club pit. We have coppiced small trees and tall scrub to open up the woodland floor, and planted shrubs. The glade has been steadily increased in size over the last few years by more coppicing and planting, and new growth has enhanced the density of cover

ELY WILDSPACE
Although it may be too soon for nightingales to take up summer residence in this still-developing habitat, this year we have been encouraged by the occurrence of two singing males near Kiln Lane, and almost certain breeding by a pair of nightingales. We hope our efforts will persuade them to stay and increase their numbers, and that we may continue to enjoy the song of this iconic bird. Nightingales at Roswell Pits We wrote previously in Elyi of the presence of nightingales in the Roswell Pits area, and the habitat creation by our volunteers to encourage nightingales to return and breed. We can now bring the latest on this ongoing story.

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update
THE RIGHT WORSHIPFUL, THE MAYOR OF ELY RICHARD MORGAN
I am delighted to be writing this piece as we celebrate HM Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee which also coincides with the Golden Jubilee of our Mayoralty. This Summer already looks full with the four-day bank holiday weekend including a shop window competition, a town crier competition, lighting of the beacon, a special service of thanksgiving in the cathedral, a family fun day and Etheldreda Fair on Palace Green, a picnic in the park in Prickwillow, Jubil Eel Day on the Jubilee Gardens, Open Farm Sunday, Aquafest, and Ely Folk Festival. I am looking forward to being with you for all the Ely occasions over the summer - do come and say hello! During the next 12 months the City of Ely Council will continue to be a presence in our
community by supporting the work of Oliver Cromwell House, Babylon Gallery and the Maltings Cinema, and the recently refurbished Museum. We provide the plants and flowers in the High Street and the approach roads. Speeding is still a problem but the vehicle speed sensors placed on Cam Drive, Cambridge Road and Prickwillow Road have made a difference. The Mayor’s Charities this year are MAGPAS and MIND. Tickets for a Dinner/Dance to be held on 12 August at The Maltings and a Golfing Day at our Golf Course on 2 September to help raise funds for these two worthy causes will be on sale shortly. Are you able to help me by doing a sponsored Park Run, a cycle ride or swimming event? Cllr Richard Morgan
Ely City Council held a 1 minute silence in memory of cherished member, Mike Rouse. We were very saddened to hear of the death of our colleague, Cllr Mike Rouse, aged 82 years. Mike had been a member of the old Ely Urban District Council until it was disbanded in 1973 and two new councils were formed: East Cambridgeshire District Council and Ely City Council. Mike played his part admirably in both. He was elected Chairman of East Cambs District Council and elected 3 times to the office of Mayor of Ely. He also served 1 term as a member of Cambridgeshire County Council. Mike had an almost encyclopaedic memory for where things had been; and an incisive mind on what could be done, in Ely. As has been said on social media he really was “Mr Ely!” He was very kind to newly elected councillors and always had a nice smile or a cheery wave. 30 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
He loved the arts and was a great supporter of ADeC and the Maltings Cinema, Babylon Gallery and of course the Museum. He wrote books, took photographs, acted in plays, and debated topics of the day. In March 2013 he was one of five district councillors to vote against parking fees in our car parks! He will also be fondly remembered by former students of Soham Village College where he taught, and was Head of English, for many years. Ely City Council held a One Minute’s Silence prior to their recent Full Council Meeting in order to reflect on his life and work. He wished to be remembered as someone who did his best as a father, for Ely, and lived a full life.

Mike Rouse Remembered
A small selection of the many hundreds of public tributes to this local legend who will be much missed by the community. FROM EMILY ALLEN OF ELY MUSEUM The Trustees, staff and volunteers of Ely Museum were deeply saddened to hear of the death of our Trustee, volunteer, supporter and friend, Mike Rouse. Mike had been a Trustee for almost 50 years and it is difficult to imagine the museum without him. He played a key role in the setting up of the museum in the 1970s when we were in our High Street location, and then continued Mike as Mayor in the to play an active role 1970s (Image from the on the board across museum collection) six decades. He was a strong advocate for the importance of the museum for the local community. His local knowledge was an invaluable resource and he often helped the museum to answer enquiries on a diverse range of subjects from both local people and those across the world with an interest in the fens. He was able to put the museum’s collections into context through his own experience and his many years of research. Mike was a key part of our offer to local schools. Whether he was telling spooky fenland tales to roomfuls of rapt children or raising lots of laughs with his ‘Bill the Farmer’ character, he was able to bring our education sessions to life in a way that still stick in the memories of children decades later. He was generous both with his time and his knowledge, sometimes in exchange for a sticky bun! He contributed greatly to the process of redeveloping the museum over the last few years, supporting fundraising, research and writing. His experience, both from his six decades at the museum and from the variety of other education, 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Mike helping us to film our ‘virtual visits’ for schools during lockdown, August 2020 council and business roles he has held, was invaluable. His voice lives on in his narration of the display about the draining of the fens. In 2020 we were delighted that Mike was awarded the Silver Owl award from our regional museum development network for his long service to museums, an honour that few achieve! In that same year, he was a great help to the museum as we filmed clips and stories for our virtual school visits, which allowed us to continue our educational visits, virtually, during the lockdown period. We will all miss Mike terribly and we will continue to share the knowledge he gave to us with generations to come. Mike receiving his Silver Owl award in 2020 for his long service to museums
FROM KATHRYN ROWLAND OF SING CHOIRS This is a special memory for me at the Civic Service in October 2019. Mike invited me to bring Sing! Choirs, and also my dementia group, Sing! Together as an illustration of the inclusive city that Ely was, and what he wanted a and strived for it to be everyone together. We sang together, and all were really grateful for the amazing opportunity. These two photos show all of us with Mike at St. Mary's Church and also Mike and I, and John Elworthy at a presentation after we had all sung.
PHIL & LAURINE GREEN, ELY MILITARY BAND Mike was a friendly staunch supporter of Ely Military Band. He attended many concerts at the College and in the Jubilee Gardens. We remember the children thinking he was Father Christmas when he proudly wore his red robe holding a bucket collecting for us when we played carols on the Market Square. Always with his camera around his neck taking numerous photographs of the band wherever we played. We will miss you Mike.

The Field Theatre Mike was a stalwart friend and supporter of The Field Theatre Group. As well as being a terrific writer, he was a truly talented actor, who took part in many of our productions. He gave a beautiful performance as 'Walter' in our 2015 film The Horseman’s Word. He also did some lovely voice-overs and narrations for us, and his voice enhanced our work immensely.
Katherine, Daniel and all at KD Mike was a champion of everyone and everything, especially in his beloved Ely! Mike was a huge supporter and lover of the arts, and was a part of our lives since we were students at college! He was always there to encourage us and had so many amazing stories to share! His knowledge was incredible and we will miss him dearly! Our thoughts are with all his family and those who knew him – he leaves behind a tremendous legacy!
Mike was so proud to have daughters Cassie and Lauren as his mayoresses during 2018-20 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
He was so generous in lending his time (and talents) to the work of others. We will always have the fondest memories of him, and a great appreciation of the gifts he so generously shared with The Field. Mike as 'Walter' in the Field Theatre Group's 2015 film 'the horseman's word.

Naomi Sherwood and all at The Ely Hero Awards With the blessing of his family, Ely Hero Awards is delighted to re-name the Community Champion Award, The “Mike Rouse Community Champion Award”. Mike was an avid supporter of the event; he encouraged and empowered the team and its Heroes to do more for others. We are honoured to remember and treasure Mike’s legacy through this special Award for everyone to aspire to be a Community Champion just like he was. Mike has done more for the community than we will ever know so this is a fitting tribute to Mr Ely.

Mike Rouse was a pivotal figure in and around Ely for many years. His work as a teacher meant that he touched the lives of many people here and in Soham. For me, as well as a personal friend, he was also a valued advisor, on hand with phenomenal local knowledge, sometimes a bit of illuminating political gossip and of course generous encouragement. He was such a constant friend to so many, generous with his time and his talents. For us he wrote history articles, Mayoral updates and best of all sent wonderful pictures to the magazine of the many events he supported by his presence. Over the last few years, we met often at Ely events and Viva theatre shows. He and I often standing at the back with our cameras. I learnt so much by watching him set up a shot using his charm to help people relax, "that's the money shot" he would whisper to me. I am sure we will never see his like again but the legacy he leaves in his photos, his many books and in our hearts will not fade easily. Thank you Mike xxx www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 35
Jack Wright, former pupil "The World has lost another wonderful soul. An inspirational and thoughtful gentlemen who knew my undying love for both Theatre and Photography. I can’t say I knew him well, but I felt like I did. He photographed so many shows from over the years whilst I was at Viva Arts and Community Group from 2010-2016 and enabled us to keep those memories very close to each other. He not only captured images, but he also captured people’s spirit and was truly gifted. Such a talented man who lit up every room I ever saw him in. He was also a very talented author with his ‘Fens End’ book series. My condolences go out to his brave sons and daughters of Ben, Lee, Cassie and Lauren and so much love to the rest of his family relatives and friends."
Josh Schunmann "....I feel, like so many others, that I have lost a constant wealth of knowledge, a guaranteed laugh but most importantly a dear and special friend. At Mike’s last mayor making he quoted Forster’s ‘Only connect’ and spoke of the vital importance of connecting with one another - a message he was passionate about. Well Mike I can say that you not being around has resulted in me having lost a very special connection in my life. I miss you already and thank you for all that you did; so much of which was just in your very nature. A hugely proud Dad, a friend of so many, a constant community man, a historian, an academic, an Eeyore at times and a brilliantly funny comedian at others and most of all a gentleman in every way. So Mike if your mission was to ‘Only Connect’ then you accomplish this in the most spectacular way." pictured with Viva founder, Dan Schumann
Mike supported Therapy Dogs Nationwide. He fell in love with the Charity after meeting the group 6 years ago. Pictured here with a St Bernard puppy at his Mayor making. 36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Jenny Eyres & The Viva Community "Thank you for your support, love, kindness, sense of humour and good natured grumbling. I will never forget that twinkle in your eye, your sense of fun, and your knack of spotting when I needed the odd positive word of encouragement or a good book recommendation... ... Mike was the most recent recipient of the Stella Award at Viva, awarded in memory of my Grandma, in recognition of his tireless service to Viva. What a good friend, and an absolute legend of a man. We will miss you."
John Elworthy "Good bye to my wonderful friend Michael Rouse.... A prolific writer but also a principled and joyous companion for breakfast, lunch or dinner.... You leave behind memories and a legacy to be envied." Read the full Ely Standard pages online https://www.elystandard.co.uk/ news/obituaries/mike-rouse-authorcouncillor-civic-head-8985948
Cathy Gibb de Schwart "Michael Rouse was just a clever and caring person who really had time for everyone especially when it came to his tireless work as Mayor of Ely. He was even happy to serve us here in Littleport when asked. Michael would turn up at any time either to one of our popular parkruns or one of The Littleport Players' rehearsal sessions. Michael certainly embraced my quirkiness whenever I showed up in some barmy fancy dress, even though he did love to out do me by dressing up in his rather showy off red Mayoral gown and sparkling chain of office bling. I will just miss Michael's earthly presence, and it was a pleasure to have met him and to know that he has left us with some fabulous treasurers of writings and photographs to enjoy and in the knowledge that Ely and The Fens is a better place thanks to Michael Rouse." Photo: Tali Iserles
Tali Iserles "Michael Rouse embodied everything that I love about Ely. His kindness, generosity and gentle, inclusive nature reflecting the city he served so well. Not only was the best Mayor of Ely I can ever remember but he was such a wonderful human being. He was so supportive of Pride in Ely, and did a lot for the LGBT community. In his 80s he was publishing books, supporting endless charity work, taking pics for the Ely Standard and being the best ambassador for this amazing community that he could possibly be.
If your kids have ever used the amazing pirate ship at Pocket Park, you can thank Mike for that. He was a passionate advocate for better play parks for our children, as well as a former secondary school teacher. He has supported so many causes in and around Ely and helped so many people in need. He was the life and soul of this incredible, tightknit community and the world is a dimmer place without him. The best tribute we can pay to Mike is simply to #BeMoreMike. Lets all be kinder, spread a bit more joy, do more to help our community be a happier, more generous, welcoming place. Thank you Mike. We won't forget you. "
Max and Phil Ward "Our figurehead, inspiration, comedian and best friend has been taken from our family - he will be forever in our hearts and minds...Thankyou to everyone for your kind words and tributes."
Sarah Shorney
"Cousin Mike Rouse you will be so missed . Your Family came first followed by your love for Ely and the community. You inspired so many as a teacher, author, Councillor, Mayor and historian. A kind, generous and wise man, even if you did try to do a good impression of being a grumpy old man sometimes!" www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 37

PETERBOROUGH Peterborough Mask perform their annual summer Shakespeare in a brand new venue. The city’s beloved Ferry Meadows will play host to a local theatre company’s outdoor production of Romeo and Juliet, the classic tale of star-crossed lovers whose romance blooms against all odds. Mask Theatre have been performing Shakespeare for Peterborough audiences since 2003, with recent successes including A Midsummer Night’s Dream and A Comedy of Errors, so co-directors Phil Lewis and Hannah Drury know they have a legacy to uphold. FENPROBE TALKING NEWS Fenprobe is a free service for blind or visually impaired residents in East Cambridgeshire. It’s moved on considerably since it was launched in late 1978, when the weekly news was sent out on 30 minute cassette tapes. Now there’s a smart black player (free of charge) with bright yellow buttons, which runs on rechargeable batteries – and the news is delivered on a USB stick, which holds a lot more information. 40 volunteers help read the news, on a five-weekly rota. There’s also a monthly magazine. Users of the service need to register, and must be referred by a doctor, optician or professional carer. If you know someone who has difficulty reading the local news, and who would benefit from this service, you can contact the secretary on 01353 861153. email: jsmith9306@aol.com FEN SPEAK We are Ely's regular poetry and spoken word open mic night with a friendly and supportive atmosphere. Come along to share your work, or listen to the great variety of talent. Includes an extended headline slot from a guest performer. Usually at the Babylon Gallery, currently running online via Zoom. Third Wednesday of every other month (February, April, June, August, October, and December). Free entry, all welcome. ELY TRI CLUB Duathlon 2022 The Ely Tri Club Duathlon (formerly the Monster Racing Duathlon) is a great way for hibernating triathletes to rub their eyes, shake out the winter legs and kick off the race season in style! A flat course, excellent organisation and plenty of helpful, enthusiastic marshals also make it the perfect place for beginners to try a multi discipline event for the first time, incorporating two 5k runs either side of a 25km bike ride. Race HQ will be at Apex Coffee House, Lancaster Way business park. The 5km run course is an out and back road route taking you across a disused WW2 Airfield that used to host the Stirling III and Lancaster bombers of 115 Squadron. The bike course heads briefly onto the A10 before heading out across the fens through the sleepy villages of Little Downham and Coveney. The second run uses the same course as the first. This promises to be a quick course, although windy Fenland conditions are almost definitely guaranteed!! https://www.elytriclub.co.uk/duathlon TUJI TAEKWONDO We are a not-for-profit community martial arts club.
