ELY'S THRIVING FLOWER CLUB CELEBRATE 50th ANNIVERSARY The City of Ely Flower Club was founded in 1971 in response to many requests for a Flower Arrangement Club to be started in Ely. At this time Littleport Club had been up and running for nine years. The first meeting was held on 4th May 1972 chaired by Mr Geoff Legge (then owner of a shoe shop in Ely High Street) with the blessing of NAFAS.
Ely Allotment held an Annual Show every August. This was very popular and many members exhibited with great success. So enthusiastic were the growing number of members that they played a prominent part in Festivals at Ely Cathedral with highlights in 1987 when Princess Diana visited and 1997 when Princess Margaret attended a special event at the Cathedral. The Club has continued to flourish until the present time despite the Pandemic - a difficult time for all Clubs and Ely Flower Club is no exception, but we are back in business and gradually gaining strength.
Seventy members joined that first evening and a committee was formed then. Mr Legge was instrumental in encouraging some of the best demonstrators of that time to give their services free of charge for the first year whilst he would demonstrate to their Clubs free of charge, this enabled the Club to establish and thrive. As membership grew the venue for meetings moved to Downham Road School Library. Their many activities included annual dinners, bus trips to gardens and nurseries including Chelsea Flower Show, competitions and fund raising, the proceeds of which went to local charities in particular the Children’s Cripple Home at Palace Green. Many of these activities continue to this day. 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
New members are always welcome and in June 2022 will celebrate our GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY at our new home The Ely Beet, Sports and Social Club in Lynn Road. Guests are welcome. Tickets £15pp to include a buffet to be followed by a Demonstration by a prominent NAFAS Demonstrator. To apply for tickets please send a SAE to our Treasurer: Mrs L Rich 20 Short Road, Stretham, Ely CB6 3LS Patricia Simmonds, Chairman

Ely Museum is delighted to host Richard Hobbs, Curator of RomanoBritish collections at The British Museum this summer for his talk “Religion and Belief in Roman Britain” on the 8th June. This talk, which will take place in Ely Museum’s Aedwen Room, will explore the practices and customs of Roman Britain with a focus on life here at the edges of the Empire. It will also include the opportunity to view the ‘Margins of Empire’ temporary exhibition which features two locally found objects from the collection at The British Museum, including the amazing Witcham helmet, and the beautifully decorated Prickwillow skillet – a rare opportunity to see them back in the fens!
ELY MODEL RAILWAY EXHIBITION Our popular event returns after a gap of 3 years to Ely College on Saturday 21st May 2022. However, one important person will be missing - Malcolm Hine, a stalwart of the Club and Exhibition Manager for no less than 16 of our previous shows in Ely. Malcolm sadly died last November of COVID. He was a fine modeller and a great friend with many in the hobby, not just in Ely but around the UK.
Our new Exhibition team have organised this year’s show as a memorial to him and it’s based primarily on the show Malcolm put together for May 2020 - which of course was cancelled due to the pandemic - as was our 2021 show. But, we’re back!
Tickets are limited and suitable for ages 12+, please visit www.elymuseum.org.uk to find out more and book your tickets. Looking for something new to do? Why not pick up one of Ely Museum’s new self guided walking tours and enjoy a walk through Ely’s history? Available from our museum gift shop, these walking tours typically take around an hour to complete and are suitable for all ages and groups. With school holiday craft days, our under 5s ‘Little Explorers’ sessions and our new ‘Young Curators Club’ and our popular explorers chest and museum trails, there is plenty for children of all ages to enjoy! Visit our website to find out more! https://www.elymuseum.org.uk/ 8 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
As well as many fine model railway layouts and traders from around the UK, the Exhibition will feature Malcolm’s last scratch built layout, Fullers Wharf. This superb 7mm scale layout features both standard and narrow gauge as well as a canal scene. We will also be awarding a new Malcolm Hine Memorial Trophy to the layout which the public vote as best in show on the day. So why not come along with your family and friends to see the wide array of exhibits on show. Doors open at 10.30am and more information can be found on our Club’s website www.elymrc. org.uk and our Club’s Facebook page. We look forward to seeing you there! Andy K Wilkinson, Chairman, Ely & District MRC

As you read this, I can name eight gardens in Ely who are getting ready to welcome you on Sunday, 12th June, from 12.00 midday to 6pm. Yes, it’s time for the NGS Ely group opening. We’ve a variety of garden sizes and styles, with two new gardens opening up this year. Each garden is different in style, reflecting its owners and their interests. You’ll find familiar and less familiar plants as you visit the gardens, meet the people who look after the garden, and enjoy tea and cake, or browsing amongst plants for sale. We love sharing our ideas with you, and giving out what we hope is useful advice on gardening topics.
Details of our entry can be found on the NGS national website. We also have a local website, www.elyopengardens.com ,with details and pictures of gardens past and present, and more local information. There’s also a map for you to download to plan your visit. A thought to leave you with. Would you be interested in opening your garden next year? Why not talk to one of the gardeners on the day, or contact me via our local website. Ken Ellis Ely Open Gardens Coordinator. OUR CURRENT LIST OF ELY OPEN GARDENS 1. The Bishop's House: CB7 4DW, 2. 42 Cambridge Road: CB7 4HL, 3. 9 Chiefs Street: CB6 1AT, 4. 5b Downham Road: CB6 1AG, 5. 1 Robins Close: CB6 3EG, 6. 1 Merlin Drive: CB6 3EA, 7. 38 Chapel Street: CB6 1AD, 8. 12 Chapel Street: CB6 1AD, START WHERE YOU WISH PAY AT THE GARDEN WHERE YOU BEGIN
There are things to interest you varying from unusual views of the Cathedral as you wander round the Bishop’s garden, collections of types of plant, chickens and rabbits and much more, including a railway! Refreshments are available at one garden, bottled apple juice at the Bishop’s garden and plants at others. Entry is £8.00 for adults, under 16s free. Individual gardens £2.50. Pre booking is available on the NGS website, and contactless payment for entry is available at some of the gardens. Cash for anything else! Your garden visits really help change lives; the entrance fees all go to the National Garden Scheme to be distributed to charities. Last year the NGS Scheme raised over three million pounds. No mean feat when you consider the difficulties that we had to overcome in order to open at all. £525,000 went to Marie Curie, £500,000 went to Macmillan Cancer Support, and £500,000 to Hospice UK to name but three. Details of donations can be found at ngs.org.uk/ beneficiaries. 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

DOING OUR BIT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT AT FENLAND SPIRIT SERVICES Interest in climate change has strengthened recently with events such as November’s COP26 in Glasgow attracting world focus to this hugely important issue. Although many of the causes of climate change can be viewed as the responsibility of big business and governments, individuals and small business owners are increasingly recognising that we have a part to play in reducing, reusing, recycling and doing our bit. At Fenland Spirit Services, working towards a greener future is central to our ethos. Our entire business is built on recycling and fixing lawnmowers so they avoid the scrap heap and are given new life. When customers bring their mower to us for servicing or repairs, we want to keep it working, if we can’t get parts for a particular machine because the manufacturer has made it obsolete, we have a stock of used mowers which can donate parts, although all service parts are new. Even our delivery van is a repurposed ambulance – the vanbulance, which we use to collect customer machinery daily, saving visits to our site. In the future we’d like to invest in solar panels alongside an electric van when the range is suitable for our use Our workshop has insulated walls and roof so we can minimise heating in the winter whilst keeping our employees comfortable. We keep the workshop door closed on cold days to keep the heat in, maybe obvious but effective. It’s the small steps that over time can make a big difference to the environment. Keeping the heat in can be one of the simplest in your own home. As you can see, even small local businesses try to identify the ways in which we can look at reducing our environmental impact while still delivering to our customers. ARNIE ARNOLD REMEMBERED 1956 - 2022 Arnie Arnold was passionate in his love for Ely and in his determination to do his very best in the role of City councillor. Elected for West Ward in 2019 he made his mark as a practical, down-to-earth man who understood the notion of community and the need for elected representatives to do more than simply discuss and debate. Put simply, he was a man who rolled up his sleeves and got on with the job. He was a prime mover in the renovation and refurbishment of the Maltings, the Council's property down by the river. He wanted it to be Ely's 'parish hall', a place for people to come together and enjoy themselves. He was keen to see the facilities there brought up to date - new lighting, new seats for the cinema, modernisation of the bar and foyer. Much of the work he championed has yet to be completed but some of it had begun before he died and he had the satisfaction of knowing that things were on the move. Arnie, many will recall, was at his most visible every year just before Christmas putting up the City's lights. With a gang of volunteers he was out and about in all weathers cheerfully encouraging and cajoling from his cherry picker until this work, so valued and appreciated, was done. He will be remembered too for all that he did in and for Ely Cemetery. With the writer of this article he set up the Friends of Ely Cemetery and became the group's first Chair, drawing together a team of volunteers that not only did practical work around the site but also encouraged interest in its history through Open Days and Family History sessions and he worked toward developing the sixteen acre cemetery as an area where there was space for nature to flourish. With his wife Alison he oversaw the introduction of swift boxes, hedgehog houses and bug hotels and supported major initiatives such as the development of a sensory garden and a full audit of the plants and flowers to be found growing on the site. Of enormous interest to him was the discovery of fragments of dozens of gravestones long thought to have been destroyed and these he carefully gathered together to ensure that they would be on permanent display to the public. There was another side to Arnie Arnold too and that was simply his humanity. He befriended his colleagues, he had the knack of making everyone feel welcomed and valued and this gift was never more obvious than in his dealings with volunteers and with all those employed by the Council whether in the Office, down at the Maltings or in the Estates Team. Their welfare and well-being was always his concern. For two years he had the satisfaction of being consort to Ely's Mayor, Cllr Sue Austen - and what a good choice that was. He wore his chain of office with pride and took on this ambassadorial role with typical enthusiasm and great good humour. Arnie will be missed at the City Council but he will be remembered with affection and his contribution to our community talked about and valued for years to come. ELY WILDSPACE JEWELS IN THE NIGHT
The days are longer, and the temperature is steadily rising. Flowers, and leaf buds have burst open. Our gardens are once again full of colour and beauty. There is more colour and beauty than most people are aware of though. For at night when the lights are out, our gardens are visited… Moths of all colours, shapes and sizes are now beginning to emerge. They go about their business in relative anonymity, in the dark, while we sleep. We are missing so many jewels in the night. That doesn’t have to be so … You can view the variety of moths that visit your garden, relatively easily, using a moth trap - a box filled with egg boxes with a light attached. This box catches moths unharmed. The moths settle on the egg boxes, where they sit until released the next day. This gives the opportunity to view up close the amazing diversity that can be found in our garden. Some of the marvellous moths that you may find are: Brimstone moth: This vibrant yellow species reminds us that moths can be just as bright and beautiful as butterflies. On the wing April-October Lime Hawk-moth: This delta-winged moth comes in different colour forms, but has a distinctive size and wing shape. On the wing May-July. Ruby Tiger: This moth is a rich brown colour with a furry body and a surprise – when it opens its wings the underwings are vibrant pink/red. On the wing April-September. Over 600 moth species have been recorded in and around Ely, and new species are being added to that list all the time. Do look out for and join our public moth trapping events. Get involved by visiting elywildspace.org.uk or email: lpcre@elywildspace.org.uk. Find us on Facebook and Twitter.

Good Vibes is more than a radio station, it covers Spotted in Ely and anything we do as a community interest group. So, moving forward, in December 2020 “Ely Radio” Launched, and we have now been broadcasting 24 hours a day 7 Days a week, for over 15 months. Making us Ely’s biggest Music variety.
M
any of you know about Spotted in Ely - SIE for short. We have been around a few years now in fact 8 years to be precise. We started small created by Mark Cooney on social media and we grew and we grew and now we have over 30,000 followers. Many of you will have used our social media platform either to promote, report or share something or to discover, be informed or generally be entertained. The community of Ely and surrounding areas have been able to share stories, events, fundraisers and even advertise jobs since we began all those years ago. We have attended events, business launches, groups and other social gatherings to spread the news within our area for those who could not physically attend. This became more relevant during recent events, when we could share events with the community in lockdown. Mark had a dream and that was to take this to another level with a radio station, just for the local community, Ely and surrounding area. In 2020 this radio station started to become a reality. This was to be a not-for-profit organisation and there for you the community. We created a Community Interest Company (CIC) called “Good Vibes Local” this covers all the legal stuff and confirms us as a not-for-profit organisation.
28 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Currently we are internet based, you can listen via our app, via a generic internet-based speaker system such as Alexa, on a computer or even your phone. As community radio station we have amassed listeners in our local area who tune in on a regular basis, however to our surprise we have regular listeners across Europe, we have even received feedback from Japan and Australia! The radio is managed and run by volunteers; all our presenters are volunteers with connections to the local area. These presenters use their own equipment and broadcast from their homes. The radio station has become a new arm for Spotted in Ely, both working side by side, allowing our reach to the local community to expand and grow. We have recently received our first radio sponsorship which helps businesses to promote themselves through media. We have more plans to expand but currently there is no availability for us to transmit on FM and or DAB but hopefully this will happen soon, and we will be easier to listen to in more locations. From one man’s hopes in 2014 we have achieved so much. Mark saw his dream of the radio station come to life, he even managed to present his own show for a short while before his untimely death. We at Good Vibes have carried on his legacy and look forward to a future supporting you the community. If you would like more information or to help, please email accounts@spottedinely.com

The City of Ely Council has recently installed three new defibrillators at some of their sites and wanted the public to be aware of their locations.
These are located at: • Ely Cemetery, Beech Lane, on chapel wall • The river front path near the Maltings next to Jubilee Gardens • Inside Oliver Cromwell’s House on St Mary’s Street. Details of their locations and hours when they are accessible have also been added to The Circuit – The National Defibrillator Network - a database 30 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
which connects defibrillators to NHS ambulance services across the UK, so that in those crucial moments when someone is having a cardiac arrest, they can be accessed quickly to help more people survive. The defibrillators on the outside of buildings are stored in tamper-proof boxes and unlocked with a PIN code given over the phone by a 999 operator. They cannot be misused as they only deliver a shock if they cannot detect a heart rate in the patient. The Council feels these are a very important addition to the City and could help save lives if such a situation should occur in the vicinity of these locations, where a defibrillator is needed.
RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders Cambridgeshire (RoADARC) are a friendly local group of RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (RoADAR). Our aim is to reduce road accidents by encouraging an interest in road safety through improving driving standards, knowledge and skill. We are committed to: • Road safety • Promoting the Police Systems of Car and Motorcycle Control • Free training for members to improve their skills and prepare for the RoSPA Advanced Test if they wish Members receive one-to-one tuition at mutually convenient times. ELY MAYOR SUE AUSTEN
This will be my final offering for the Elyi as Mayor. I have been honoured to hold the office for 2 years and I have enjoyed my term and have met some lovely people. I have attended many events promoting the City of Ely. I have particularly enjoyed events involving children, young people ,carers and people with disabilities. It was an honour to be asked to cut the ribbon to launch the Sid Merry Lounge at the Cutter a wonderful tribute to the Eel Catcher and a great personality. I attended the Wizard of Oz which was a treat and to be presented with a cheque for the Mayor's Charity .Sadly the end of my term is overshadowed by the death of my Consort Cllr Arnie Arnold . His wife Alison has stepped up and is supporting me in Arnie's memory. It has been an odd term with covid -events booked and then cancelled but we weathered the storm and the Council continued to operate as normal. I am very proud of this beautiful City and will continue to work to the benefit of the Parish. I wish all the very best for an enjoyable term as Mayor to Cllr Morgan as he takes up the reins. REKNOWNED CHOIR, LIBERA RETURN TO ELY CATHEDRAL A British group of seven to sixteen-year-old boys who first appeared on BBC Songs of Praise and now have a worldwide following are returning to Ely Cathedral for their 2022 UK spring concert on Saturday 21st May.
ELY AQUAFEST IS BACK ON SUNDAY JULY 3RD! The two Rotary clubs in Ely are currently making plans for the return of Ely Aquafest on Sunday July 3rd, which will feature as usual a wide mix of stalls, funfair activities, local music bands, and arena events, along with the ever-popular Raft Race on the river.
Libera is made up of ordinary boys who are all at schools in South London. However, as their recordings and performances demonstrate, the music they produce is truly extraordinary. With shimmering, mystical chords and ecstatic harmonies and stunning lighting, they are utterly unique as a group. They frequently appear on TV and radio in the UK and overseas, as well as appearing live in some of the world’s most prestigious venues. They have been heard millions of times on YouTube and Spotify. This year, for the third time the group is holding its UK spring concert in Ely Cathedral, giving local audiences another chance to experience these remarkable children at first hand. The concert will also be a chance for the boys to remember Libera’s founder, composer and conductor Robert Prizeman, who sadly died last September. Dressed in their hallmark long white robes, the boys will present their special brand of choral music in a fully staged concert with orchestra and lighting, including some of the most beautiful choral pieces ever written and music from their recent album. Libera’s concerts sell out quickly, so anyone wanting to share the experience is encouraged not to delay. Tickets are now on sale from Ely Cathedral Box Office and cost £35 or £25, with special concessions for seniors and students, telephone 01353 660349 or email box.office@ elycathedral.org, or online from: https://www.elycathedral.org/events/libera 42 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

including our incredible volunteers who will be helping on the night. You can look forward to being cheered and encouraged every step of the way you ‘glow’!” New for this year is the addition of a virtual option for those who live further afield or who wish to take part in the walk at a time and in a location to suit them. All participants receive a Star Shine Night Walk event pack including a reusable event t-shirt, support with sponsorship, and treats to keep them going around the route. Finishers can proudly claim their medal and those attending the event in-person will be rewarded once they cross the finishing line with an event bag. Sign up in advance at arhc.org.uk/ssnw for £19.50 (adults) and £9.50 children under 16 (on the date of the event).
Star Shine Night Walk is back! Join in and make the streets of Cambridge glow green for Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s is inviting you to join them for Star Shine Night Walk and make the streets glow green for hospice care on Saturday 21 May! For the last two years Star Shine Night Walk has taken place virtually due to pandemic restrictions, but we are excited to share the news that it will take place in-person this year! The fundraising walk has long held a special place in the local community’s heart, with many returning year after year to walk in memory of loved ones.
Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s services are provided free of charge to those living with an advanced serious illness or other life-limiting condition and those who need end-of-life care. It will cost £10.5 million this year to operate services, with £3.52 million of this raised through donations, fundraising activities and trading. With the financial impact of the pandemic still being felt, events like Star Shine Night Walk – and the local community who support them – are more important than ever!
COMMUNITY CHAMPION AWARDS
FROM LUCY FRAZER MP I was pleased to recently visit and congratulate four staff members at Ely College and staff at Staploe Medical Centre, who were nominated for awards. This was a chance to thank them for their incredible work in keeping the school community safe over the last two years.
The ‘glow’ of excitement has already begun, with a new start and finish venue confirmed as Cambridge Rugby Union Football Club, Volac Park on Grantchester Road. Walkers can look forward to a celebratory atmosphere and energy of a live 10km walk, with an 8pm start and a carefully mapped, accessible route around the iconic views and beautiful green spaces of Cambridge. Angeline Liles, Events Officer, explains: “We are so excited that Star Shine Night Walk is back as a physical event this year! We hope you will have fun with the glow green theme as we light up the streets of our historic City! We are expecting an amazing atmosphere created by the energy and passion of everyone taking part, 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
At Ely College, lead safeguarding officer, Lynn Riches and Welfare Officer Claire Lucas both conducted hundreds of ‘safe and well’ visits, delivering food parcels and ensuring that families
had everything they needed through some of the hardest parts of the pandemic. Adam Steels, the current Head of Sixth Form, was responsible for the set up and administration of asymptomatic testing. On top of this huge task, he also ensured that all the school’s arrangements were COVID compliant. The school’s COVID testing programme would not have been possible without Student Support Assistant Caroline Price, who ensured that testing volunteers were well-looked after and made the provision of the programme a success. Having met the team, I have no doubt that their work not only kept the school safe but also kept the community’s morale up through some very difficult times.
SPRING HAS SPRUNG, BUT HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR BOUNCE?
Spring is finally in the air, and, for some; it is in their step! Nights are drawing out and new beginnings are blossoming. Not least of all, for the members of Ely City WI and; as the time approaches for us to renew our WI membership, we are very much looking forward to new starts, new adventures, new projects and new friends. If the pandemic showed us nothing else, it showed how communities became stronger together. We are all familiar with the ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ iconic image which has become a popular moniker over time, and similarly; so has the Women’s Institute. The WI. Inspiring women for over a century you can guarantee that everyone has heard of the WI. But do they know what it does? What it means? Who it’s for? With so much to look forward to,
At Staploe Medical Centre, staff were nominated for an award by volunteer Julie Seabrook. Huge national schemes like the vaccination rollout would simply not have been possible without the work of people like Covid:19 Care coordinator Demet Sasioglu and Quality Manager Sally Graham, who provided individuals with the personalised service they needed. Ely PCN Manager Simon Randall focused on joined-up communication between the 6 practices in the area, alongside Clinical Manager Jackie Spruce who has helped to ensure the smooth running of services. And special thanks to Dr Anthony Gunstone and Dr Richard Brixley for continuing to provide excellent patient care. Lucy Frazer M.P.
Ely City WI want to continue to inspire our members and to reach out to our wider community too. We are justifiably proud of our WI and have members, of all ages and backgrounds who come together to have fun, make friends and make a difference. With connections in and around the city, and our finger on the local pulse, Ely City WI is a welcoming group. With many exciting plans for the coming year, Ely City is at the helm of driving forward a supportive female network. We cannot forget, though how the WI set out to give its members a voice and to be a force of good in the community. Since its formation, our ambitions have grown and there are many chances to be involved in the various campaigns, on a wide range of issues; which are spearheaded by our national organisation. So, why not start this season by coming along as a visitor to one or two of our meetings to see what we’re all about? We would love to meet you. You can visit our website: https://wielycity.wixsite. com/home or find us on Facebook (just search Ely City WI). or email us at elycitywi@yahoo.com

EAST ANGLIAN AIR AMBULANCE OUR AIR AMBULANCE For EAAA, 2021 will always be remembered as a ‘milestone year’ as it was the year during which we moved into Helimed House our new Norwich HQ, started flying 24/7 and started carrying blood on board every mission. As we progress, as a charity at the forefront of pre-hospital emergency care, we maintain a necessarily sizeable operation to provide exceptional levels of support for every one of our patients, both pre-hospital and through aftercare. To do this, we need to raise £15million annually to deliver and develop our 24/7 service by air and by road. EAAA thanks each and everyone immensely for the part played in ensuring that our doctor and critical care paramedic teams can be there to deliver that advanced prehospital care, whenever needed. There are many volunteering opportunities at EAAA, often interacting with the general public - its invariably good fun and always rewarding.
THE ETHELDREDA MEDAL
Every other year, I award The Etheldreda Medal to people across the Diocese whose service to the community (which might be as ‘local’ as their extended family but could be as extensive as a national or international concern) is both ‘generous’ and ‘outstanding’. I am looking for exceptional people whose good works haven’t yet been recognised; those who might (in partnership with others) come close to being nominated for a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. For many people this will be about the duration and persistence of their good works, for others it may relate to a short but extraordinary act of kindness or course of conduct. Nominations for the 2022 awards need to be submitted by 26 May 2022. These will then be reviewed by a panel of volunteers appointed by me to identify suitable recipients. Most of the awards will be presented publicly at a special service at Ely Cathedral on 15 October 2022.
For 2022 we have scheduled many exciting fundraising events, the success of which will depend upon volunteer help, so there is always lots of scope to help out. From Trek 24 to hiking 24miles or kilometres plus many more, there are events to appeal to many – why not participate ( by contacting EAAA website ) or signing up to become a much valued volunteer. We really do need YOUR help. Go online today – please. Help make the difference for people like us who, perhaps through no fault of their own, urgently need the help of EAAA – NOW. Together – We Save Lives. 46 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
I hope you will help me with this project, either by making a nomination yourself, or by encouraging others to do so. The Nomination Form (and details of the procedure and some fictional examples of the kind of people to whom I wish to make the award) is available below. If you have any questions, or need any further information, please contact the Convener of the Etheldreda Medal Award Selection Panel, The Revd Canon James Reveley, on 01353 660302 or (preferably) by emailing him on J.Reveley@elycathedral.org heading up your message ‘Etheldreda Medal Award’.

ELY CATHEDRAL CELEBRATE NATIONAL VOLUNTEERS' WEEK IN JUNE As National Volunteers’ Week returns in early June it is a perfect opportunity for organisations across the country to celebrate the work of their marvellous volunteers. Here at Ely Cathedral, we are no different. It goes without saying that the past 24 months has been challenging. Both professionally and personally we have all had to adapt to so many changes in our working patterns and ways of life. However, amidst all the uncertainty, obstacles, and complications, the volunteers have continued to support us in countless different ways, and for that, we are truly grateful. As an organization we recognize that we simply could not operate without them. With over twenty different roles across the entire organisation, we are indebted to their time, skills, and enthusiasm. Moreover, they help maintain and enhance the beauty of our building and support the community's daily life, worship, welcome, and outreach to visitors. On Wednesday 1 June, we will be releasing a short video by the Dean (The Very Rev’d Mark Bonney) to kickstart the celebrations. To see this, and to check out more information about the potential ways you could get involved, please visit our website and social media channels nearer the time. www.elycathedral.org
JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN'S PLATINUM JUBILEE FROM 2nd - 5th JUNE This special anniversary marks 70 years since The Queen's accession to the throne in 1952. To mark this occasion we will be exhibiting the official replica of her Coronation dress, commissioned by Harrods in 2012 to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee. This dress was famously worn by Claire Foy at Ely Cathedral for the sumptuous Netflix drama, The Crown. In 2020, the dress was also the headline exhibit as part of our popular Crowns and Gowns exhibition. There will be a special floral tribute to The Queen in the form of several impressive displays interpreting key events, interests and pursuits in her life. These will include: • • • • • •
The 1947 Royal Wedding The Queen’s devotion to 'The Commonwealth' Her love of 'Horses, Racing and the Countryside' A nautically themed display featuring ‘The Royal Yacht Britannia’ A floral tribute illustrating her service as Queen to the United Kingdom of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales We will be extending visitor opening times, with additional tours including a guided Cathedral Tour followed by a celebratory 'Champagne Jubilee Afternoon Tea’ at the Almonry.

FENPROBE TALKING NEWS Fenprobe is a free service for blind or visually impaired residents in East Cambridgeshire. It’s moved on considerably since it was launched in late 1978, when the weekly news was sent out on 30 minute cassette tapes. Now there’s a smart black player (free of charge) with bright yellow buttons, which runs on rechargeable batteries – and the news is delivered on a USB stick, which holds a lot more information. Fenprobe rents a studio in Ely, where over forty volunteers help read the news, on a five-weekly rota. There’s also a monthly magazine. Users of the service need to register, and must be referred by a doctor, optician or professional carer. If you know someone who has difficulty reading the local news, and who would benefit from this service, you can contact the secretary on 01353 861153. email: jsmith9306@aol.com FEN SPEAK We are Ely's regular poetry and spoken word open mic night with a friendly and supportive 52 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELY TRI CLUB Duathlon 2022 The Ely Tri Club Duathlon (formerly the Monster Racing Duathlon) is a great way for hibernating triathletes to rub their eyes, shake out the winter legs and kick off the race season in style! A flat course, excellent organisation and plenty of helpful, enthusiastic marshals also make it the perfect place for beginners to try a multi discipline event for the first time, incorporating two 5k runs either side of a 25km bike ride. Race HQ will be at Apex Coffee House, Lancaster Way business park. The 5km run course is an out and back road route taking you across a disused WW2 Airfield that used to host the Stirling III and Lancaster bombers of 115 Squadron. The bike course heads briefly onto the A10 before heading out across the fens through the sleepy villages of Little Downham and Coveney. The second run uses the same course as the first. This promises to be a quick course, although windy Fenland conditions are almost definitely guaranteed!! https://www.elytriclub.co.uk/ duathlon THE ELY WALKING GROUP Contact the walk coordinator, Nick, on 07551 158510 or email nickshippaac@gmail.com WALKING NETBALL For more information contact Sophie Edwards, Sophie.Edwards@eastcambs.gov.uk or call 01353 616348

NEW BUSINESS CENTRE IN ELY LIBRARY WILL OFFER A ‘ONE STOP’ HUB FOR ALL THINGS BUSINESS, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND QUALIFICATIONS! The Business & IP Centre (BIPC) Cambridgeshire & Peterborough officially launched its BIPC Local hub at Ely Library on Monday 28 March. This was the first launch event of the week with Wisbech, Huntingdon and Peterborough coming online in the following days. The Ely launch, which was well attended by key local stakeholders, partners, and entrepreneurs, was declared open by Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Dr Nik Johnson. The event offered an opportunity for local businesses to find out what support was being made available locally through partners such as Venner Shipley, Growth Works, NatWest, Price Bailey, Fraser Dawbarns, Cambridgeshire Skills, Ely Cathedral Business Group, FSB and Bishop Laney Sixth Form. The BIPC launch also marked the collaboration going forward for a business and community centre based in the library. This new initiative has brought together stakeholders from the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Skills Service, the Adult Skills Service, East Cambridgeshire District Council, business organisations, including the Chambers of Commerce, Ely Cathedral Business Group (ECBG) and Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), local schools and local recruitment companies. This will be the ‘one stop’ hub for all things business, education, training, and qualifications. Please watch this space for the programme of events soon to be announced. The Business & IP Centre Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has been supporting businesses since 2019. In that time, they’ve had over 1300 interactions with local entrepreneurs through a rich variety of webinars, workshops and oneto-one business and intellectual property advice sessions. The Network has a strong track record of supporting local economies, and in 2019 an independent economic evaluation showed the BIPC was creating £6.95 of public value for every £1 invested, and in the three years to 2019 supported the creation of 12,288 new businesses,
55 per cent of which were started by female entrepreneurs and some 31 per cent by BAME entrepreneurs. Gary Porter, Head of Libraries, Archives and Culture at Cambridgeshire County Council, said “We are delighted to announce that we are expanding throughout Cambridgeshire and Peterborough by adding 'BIPC Local' sites in Ely, Wisbech, Huntingdon and Peterborough libraries to sit alongside our Regional Centre in Cambridge Central Library. The geographical spread across our County will make the service even more accessible to those that need it. We’re looking forward to watching our future businesses start and grow in the coming months.” The Business & IP Centre Local in Ely Library is delivered in partnership between the British Library, Business & IP Centre Cambridgeshire & Peterborough and the council’s Library Services team. It forms part of the Business & IP Centre National Network, delivered in libraries across the country, providing business advice and support to local entrepreneurs to start, protect and grow their business. Get in touch to see how BIPC Cambridgeshire & Peterborough can help you to start, protect and grow your business.
