Ely Museum
A BIT OF HISTORY
Emily Allen Custodian at Ely Museum
F
ollowing the Napoleonic War with France, the Littleport Riots began in May 1816. This period was one of the worst times of social unrest in the history of the Fens as men who had fought bravely at Waterloo returned home to face a severe economic depression in which jobs were difficult to find & wages very low. Disgruntled, angry farm workers across the Isle of Ely rose in rebellion Fortified by strong beer & armed with pitchforks and butchers knives, 150 men & women gathered on the evening of the 22nd May at The Globe in Littleport, and began to ransack property. Seizing a farm wagon, they loaded it with gunpowder & three large punt guns to the rear, and began towing this fearsome piece of artillery toward Ely! “Give us a living wage” cried the rioters at the Ely Magistrates, who ordered employers to increase wages on the condition the mob dispersed and ‘conducted themselves more peacefully’! Many rioters were happy with this proposal and returned home, whereas others stayed to celebrate! Though these celebrations resulted in the ransacking of several local houses! The next day, determined to put an end to the rioting, the local magistrate read the Riot Act outside the George Inn, and fierce fighting broke out immediately! Several rioters fled the scene, but 86 arrests were made. The arrested were brought to the Bishops Gaol, now Ely Museum, to await their trials.
A special Assize, a type of local court, was held to hear the charges & prisoners were bought in front of two local Judges. In total, 24 4 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
people were convicted of capital offenses punishable by hanging, though all but five were pardoned. A month later, on the 28th June 1816, these five men were hung at the public gallows and, unusually, returned to Ely for burial in a common grave at St Mary’s Church. emily@elymuseum.org.uk Tel: 01353 666655 www.ElyMuseum.org.uk www.facebook.com/ElyMuseum www.twitter.com/ElyMuseum www.instagram.com/Ely_Museum

doctors surgeries. The remaining journeys are just as important to help people reduce loneliness and isolation by visiting relatives, local clubs or shopping. Our drivers are based throughout East Cambridgeshire including Ely, Soham, Littleport, Wicken and Witchford. Passengers book trips through Ely Volunteer centre based in Fore Hill Ely and as long as we receive three working day notice we are able to meet most peoples transport needs. The passenger pays 0.45p per mile to the driver on completion of their journey, although there is a minimum charge of £6.00 for shorter journeys. We are constantly putting on new members through recommendation or word of mouth and with hospital transport at a premium all the local health services are aware of our service. The elderly and people living alone find the service invaluable to be able to attend appointments, visit friends and relatives or go shopping. Our passengers are really appreciative of what we do so it is a really rewarding volunteering experience to be involved. Interested potential volunteer drivers can contact Granville Hawkes on 01353 666166
A cheque was presented on 18th February for £2,500 to a representative of ‘Dogs For Good’ and her assistance dog Nelson. This amount will be enough to sponsor a puppy for one year. The Rocking Ukuleles raised this amount over the year by performing charity gigs and holding fundraising events.

We need your help if you have some spare time, drive a car and want to help others! Heres why, the car sheme has been operating successfully for over twenty years and currently we have twenty-five dedicated volunteer drivers who offer door to door transport to people who are unable to drive or use conventional public transport. Our problem is we are so busy with 2018-2019 being another record year with 121,000 miles covered across 7,800 journeys. For most these journeys are really important if not essential as over 70% are health related with destinations to acute hospitals, dentists, health centres and local

NEW KITCHEN WORKTOPS FOR FEN HOUSE THANKS TO LOCAL COMPANY COMPLETE KITCHENS FANTASTIC WORK
S
ervice users at Fen House, a neurorehabilitation centre in Ely for people with acquired brain injury, are enjoying increased independence thanks to a brandnew kitchen and support from local business. The Activities of Daily Living (ADL) kitchen has been completely transformed into a modern space with increased accessibility. The new kitchen features a riseand-fall hob and sink, so that individuals with mobility impairments can use the kitchen safely and easily while sitting down or using a wheelchair. The new worktops were kindly provided by local business Complete Kitchens Ely, who invited Occupational Therapy Assistant, Louise Bowers, and two service users to the showroom to choose the perfect worktop. Paul Smart, Sales Director at Complete Kitchens Ely, said “It was my pleasure to donate the worktops; it was great to meet Louise and the service users”.

ARTHUR RANK HOSPICE CHARITY SEEKING COMMUNITY MINDED VOLUNTEERS TO RUN ARTHUR’S SHED
A
rthur Rank Hospice Charity is recruiting volunteers to maintain and develop Arthur’s Shed, to start as soon as possible. The innovative community space is a vibrant hub within the Hospice and the wider community, offering a refreshing programme of volunteer-led activities. Inspired by the Men’s Shed movement, the studio room was integrated within hospice’s design as a non-clinical space, where people connected to the Hospice and the wider community can come together to share skills, learn something new and socialise. Between ten and twenty sessions are held every week, thanks to generous local support and grants, with Arthur’s Shed collectively welcoming 100 people each month. As well as providing a safe, warm and friendly venue where volunteers share their time and talents, the community space has played an important part in helping the community see what Hospice is really like.

The Big Lottery funding of the Project Coordinator role will finish at the end of 12 months in July. Having established strong foundations, the challenge is to recruit a team of volunteers who she will support to take over responsibility for Arthur’s Shed. Volunteers are invited to apply now and will be appointed as soon as possible, in order to ensure a smooth hand-over. Those interested please call the Hospice’s Reception on 01223 675777 or email arthursshed@arhc.org.uk
DOING GOOD!
N
ominations have flowed in for Ely Hero Awards which is now in its 3rd year. Heroes have been nominated in all of the 10 categories including the Elyi Magazine's category - Neighbour of the Year. Supported by over 25 local businesses, this community event breathes excitement into Ely and the surrounding villages each and every year bringing with it a trail of celebration and a generous dusting of inspiration. On discovering they had been nominated, one nominee wrote "Thank you! I am so humbled that through their heartache (the nominator) they should feel I am worthy of a nomination. Regardless of any further contact this has left me with a warm glow" The judges now have the challenging task of shortlisting and finalising with the Category winners being taken from those finalised. The excited judges are very much looking forward to the task and meeting local heroes to learn more about their inspirational deeds. During the month of May those shortlisted and finalised will be contacted by the judges and taken through the next steps of the process. The impact of the awards for all involved has been incredible - the sense of camaraderie between them has been a joy to see, for example, young Alfie McCreadie, joint winner of the 2018 Child of Achievement Award has been performing his famous magic shows in order to fundraise for his
fellow winner Jay Davison, 7 who has been raising vital funds for his cancer treatment. Last year Jorja Furze, a 2017 winner was invited to the Royal Wedding at Windsor Castle and there have been Royal engagements for Ruth Marley, the 2018 Ely Hero - Ruth has also been invited to the Queens Garden Party in May! Cineworld Ely have kindly donated pairs of tickets during the process that have been used to say "thank you" to all the wonderful people who nominate their heroes - it couldn't be done without them! The team have made available 3 prize draws for the nominees with winners being announced every couple of weeks. Organisers Metro Rod Cambridge, local Drain Care Experts say; "The power of the event never ceases to amaze us, its just incredible! We are very honoured to facilitate, along with so many other local businesses the celebration of individuals in the community who make it so special". Co-organisers Infiniti Graphics have been working hard creating the website, promotional materials and providing organisational support. So who will take the Hero Crowns this year? We will have to wait and see but in the meantime, keep up with all the news on www.elyheroawards.org. uk. Check out the Facebook and twitter pages @ elyheroes

MUSIC
REVIEW: ELY CONSORT
Ely Methodist Chapel on Sat 16th March 2019 By Rosemary Westwell
E
ly Consort, directed by Matthew Rudd, is an excellent choir and obviously delighted the packed audience in Ely Methodist Chapel on Saturday. Their singing was a very high standard and as a choir it proved particularly competent at fusing complex chords into emotive, cohesive harmony. Many of the pieces in the programme were new and those of us who are wary of contemporary composers were given a very pleasant surprise. Matthew obviously knows his music and the selection chosen for this programme, which included many modern-day composers, was particularly musical and delightful. Pianist, Charlie Penn, and cellist Anna Jones also made and excellent contribution to this lovely programme. Other highlights for me were ‘Time is Endless’ by Vytautas Miškinis, ‘Cantata Domino’ by Ko Matsushita, ‘The music of stillness’ by Elaine Hagenberg and the final ‘Polovtsian Dances’ by Alexander Borodin.
‘Time is Endless’ contained gorgeous, ethereal harmonies, ‘Cantata Domino’ was tuneful with a tinge of attractive melancholy, ‘The music of stillness’ had a beautiful, sustained texture with exquisite harmonic changes that were clearly expressed, and the excitement and exotic exuberance of the Polovtsian Dances ended the evening perfectly. None of this detail would have been possible to enjoy without the skill and sensitivity of this wonderful choir and its director. Their next event will be John Rutter's 'Feel the Spirit' in St. Mary's Church, Burwell on the 29th June 2019 www.ticketsource.co.uk/elyconsort

MAYOR OF ELY MIKE ROUSE
T
he Mayoral year seems to have flown by and Cassie and I thank everyone who has invited us to events big and small. It has been our pleasure to serve the city and parish and represent Ely further afield. It looks likely that we will have fulfilled about 275 civic engagements, with some 25 of those being as guests outside the City. In addition, Cllr Alison Arnold, as Deputy Mayor, has attended a number of events and we thank her and her consort, Arnie, for all their support, especially his help with the photographs on several occasions. The most gratifying aspect is to know how welcome the Mayor and Mayoress are at events and how important the office is in the life of our City. As Chairman of the council I have attended some 50 committee and business meetings of the council, so it has been a busy year. We have been able to help a number of charities this year – principally the Royal British Legion, RAFA and Pos+Ability and we hope to make some more small presentations at the Mayor making ceremony on 11th May at the Maltings. There have been many highlights – welcoming Prince Charles to Ely, the amazing Remembrance Day and lighting Ely’s Peace Beacon, seeing the A142 Ely by-pass opening, the Pride Day, Aquafest, Apple Festival,
Re-launching Oliver Cromwell House, getting to know the wonderful Therapy Dogs and Ely Rockers. There have been great events, concerts and exhibitions in the Cathedral, and our thanks to Rev Chris Hill and my chaplain, the Rev Michael Banyard for conducting our civic service in the beautiful St Mary’s Church. So many things, but most of all, it is just being part of the life of our vibrant city.
While the parish council is affected by party political decisions elsewhere, the strength of the City council is that it remains independent and only considers doing what is in the best interests of our great city and we thank all members and officers for their support. We thank the Elyi for giving us this column to report on our activities and it has been our honour and privilege to the serve the City during this past year. Thank you one and all! Mike

PRIDE IN OUR HISTORY
C
harles, 9th Earl Spencer, author of bestsellers ‘Killers of the King’ and ‘To Catch a King’, officially re-opened Oliver Cromwell’s House, one of Ely’s top visitor attractions on 26th March. The refurbishment was made possible by funding from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development through the Cambridgeshire Fens LEADER programme, co-ordinated by Cambridgeshire ACRE. This impressive House now boasts a completely revamped Civil War Exhibition with impressive new interactive interpretation. There is also a new timeline and family tree to detail more about this amazing man who killed a King, but refused the crown. Experience 17th Century domestic life in the only residence still in existence other than Hampton Court. Visitors will still have the opportunity to try on costumes and try out the games of the time but will also have the chance to truly experience what life was like on the battle fields during the English Civil War in the new mini encampment.
www.olivercromwellshouse.co.uk Twitter @cromwells_house Facebook /cromwellshouse
At the end of the tour, visitors will once again be asked to decide whether they feel Cromwell was a Hero or a Villain but the attraction now has a new voting system which staff believe everyone will be keen to try out!

COMBINED UPDATE
MAYOR JAMES PALMER
WE WELCOME MAYOR JAMES PALMER TO THIS EDITION OF THE MAGAZINE WITH SOME UPDATES ON LOCAL POLICY, TRANSPORT & INFRASTRUCTURE.
D
elays when travelling the A10 between Ely and Cambridge are a frequent source of frustration for thousands. Regular congestion means the 16-mile journey can take over 45 minutes. I was therefore delighted at the end of March to advance plans to dual this section of the A10 to the Strategic Outline Business Case stage. The Case will specifically identify possible routes that the dualled road could take. After years of inconsequential studies, this represents real progress towards delivery. A10 enhancements have never been this far forward. We will also be bidding for Government funding this summer. Upgrading the A10 will better connect Ely’s economy to Cambridge and generate up to 17,000 new homes as well as 14,000 new jobs.
On other duties: Mayor Palmer welcoming Prince Charles to Ely
Rail users at Ely and Littleport regularly have to cram into the four-car trains between King’s Lynn and Cambridge on the service to London. I know first-hand finding a comfortable place to stand is often a blessing, let alone a seat! This is deeply unfair given the price of tickets. Something had to change. Following meetings I held with the Chief Executive of Network Rail and with the Rail Minister in early February, it was announced that funding had been approved for platform extensions which will allow eight-car trains to operate all the way from King’s Lynn through to London from late 2020. Mayor Palmer meeting Rail Minister Andrew Jones MP We are always looking for ways to unlock muchneeded new housing in the Ely area. The Combined Authority has provided a loan to the East Cambs Trading Company to refurbish 88 derelict former RAF homes at the Princess of Wales Hospital site. It was completely unacceptable that these homes were left to rot while young people struggle to get on the housing ladder. We have also provided a loan to develop 54 more homes in Haddenham. Both sites will include affordable housing and the loans will be repayable, allowing us to reuse to money to deliver even more housing. he rigours of pets and children, or lack of sun in your garden, can result in your lawn being besieged by bald spots and dry discoloured areas. Sometimes having a north-facing garden, or an area that is shaded by trees, can lead to your grass just not growing despite your best efforts to nurture it. If you have children or grandchildren with play equipment, trampolines or sports nets, patches can appear very quickly, leaving the area muddy and uneven, which can be extremely dangerous for play.

WICKEN FEN
D
id you know that the National Trust’s Wicken Fen Nature Reserve is one of Europe's most important wetlands, home to over 9,000 recorded species including many rare species of plants, birds and dragonflies? The Fens are very important for biodiversity, and Wicken Fen is the most diverse site in the UK. When the National Trust bought its first two acres at Wicken Fen in 1899 for £10, it would have been hard to imagine that this small fragment of undrained fenland would grow into a nature reserve of almost 2000 acres by 2019. As well as protecting the fragile fen soils of the Sedge Fen, it was important to expand the reserve so that the rare and numerous species found there could survive and thrive. In 1999, the National Trust launched the Wicken Fen Vision, an ambitious landscape-scale conservation project to extend the reserve from Wicken towards the outskirts of Cambridge, providing a variety of new habitats for wildlife, and a beautiful tranquil wilderness for people to enjoy. Wicken Fen is celebrating 20 years of the Wicken Fen Vision and 120 years since the National Trust bought its first 2 acres at Wicken Fen on 1st May this year. The majority of the celebrations will take place at the Big Vision Weekend 4 to 6 May, when there will be lots of fun activities to enjoy, from boat trips and guided walks, to storytelling and pond dipping. We’ll also be organising a Big Vision Treasure Hunt that will run throughout the month of May; you will be able to explore the reserve, solve clues and claim a prize! For more information about the activities taking place over the weekend, go to https://www.nationaltrust. org.uk/wicken-fen-nature-reserve/features/ wicken-fen-big-vision-weekend We hope that you’ll join us to celebrate the success of the reserve so far, find out more about our future plans, and enjoy activities in the beautiful fen environment.

ELY WILDSPACE Tern Rafts on Roswell Pits isitors to Roswell admiring the view from Kiln Lane towards the Cathedral may have seen a raft in the middle of the pit. This is one of two tern rafts on Roswell Pits – the second is on the pit nearest the river. The rafts are there to benefit common terns, which come here from Africa each spring, but which could not breed in Ely because of a lack of nesting sites. In 2013 Ely Wildspace obtained a grant from the Clark Bradbury Charitable Trust to pay local company K and K Mouldings to make the rafts, which our volunteers installed and surfaced with gravel on which the birds could lay their eggs.
V
OUTDOOR, WILD & NATURAL SPACES
T
he first breeding success came in 2015, when three chicks fledged. Since then at least 18 terns have fledged from the rafts, including eight last year. Each spring volunteers clean the rafts and replenish the gravel (donated by the Environment Agency) to make them attractive as nest sites.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND A review by Rosemary Westwell The Maltings 7th April 2019
T
here was no better way to spend a wet Sunday afternoon than to revel in a lively and highly entertaining production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ in the Maltings in Ely. All the favourite characters were there:Alice, the ever-so-late White Rabbit, the sleepy Dormouse, the Playing Cards, the Town Cryer, the grinning Cheshire Cat, the Caterpillar indulging in a bit of smoking, and the downtrodden King and his wife, the petulant Queen of Hearts. The familiar story of Alice retold in a series of non-stop music and action that kept the audience fascinated for the whole performance. Highlights for me were the quivering panic of the White Rabbit, Alice and her common sense questions, and the outrageous Queen and her subservient husband. What was especially delightful was that the Maltings was packed with families with young children who were all wholly entranced in proceedings on the stage. The Company consisted of Melissa Jane Fleming, Oliver Scott, Ashley Shackell, Rhys Whiteside, Francesca Pim and Laurie Anderson or Isabelle Smith who played mini Alice. They were backed by a highly efficient and effective team. Scott Ritchie Productions and KD Theatre Productions make a fine combination when it comes to entertaining theatre. To see what is coming up next for KD Theatre Productions, visit www.kdtheatre.co.uk.

Jurassic Bark welcomes a new member to the team! Many of the customers from local pet suppliers, Jurassic Bark will remember Sid, the Golden Retriever, who would spend most of his time, laying across the entrance to whichever of our shops he was “working” at. Customers were left with no choice other than give him a stroke, both as they entered the store, and then again when they left. Failure to do so would result in a bark, until the customer did their duty. Sadly, Sid passed over the Rainbow Bridge towards the end of last year and is sadly missed. We at Jurassic Bark, have interviewed, and found his successor . We know he has a lot to measure up to, but with patience and training (and the odd “bloody dog” !!) We hope we will get there, SO meet DAVE !!
Dave will be pleased to welcome customers new and old to Jurassic Bark, so please call in and see us, we have a large range of foods for dogs cats and small animals, including, dry, wet and raw foods. We also have a good range of toys, accessories, beds etc and we think you will find our prices very competitive, so call in and see us and hopefully meet Dave !!
Dave has travelled from the side of a road in Poland to take up this position, He is 3 months old, has lots of attitude and we are hoping that over time, he will fill the very large shoes that Sid has left,

As part of the Food and Drink Festival, a variety of experts will be showcasing their skills and passing on their knowledge in the fabulous Cookery Theatre. Sponsored by Cambridge Commodities, there is an exciting line-up to entertain and inspire. Check out the fabulous line-up which has a health theme to it, although don't be too alarmed, there is still plenty to drool over! There will be lots of tasting opportunities (some naughtier that others, but all nice!) as well as amazing raffle prizes to win after each session, donated by the demonstrators so bag your chair early (no towels please!). Sunday 5th May, 11 am -The Hungry Roundhead
SUNDAY
Who would have thought 17th Century food would look this good! Join The Hungry Roundhead, aka local food historian Nora Gardner, and hear the origins of many of our traditional recipes and discover how they have evolved to the modern versions we know today. As eels were an important part of Ely's history, we are delighted that Nora will be using this versatile fish in one of her dishes - well we are at Ely's Eel Festival Weekend!
Sunday 5th May, 12 noon - Hala El-Shafie
Sunday 5th May, 1 pm Red Herring We welcome from the riverside, head chef Gareth, from Ely's brand new Red Herring restaurant. Literally opened only days ago, this is your chance to find out directly from the chef about the style of food that is on the menu. Today Gareth will be demonstrating a classic fish dish that will have you reminiscing about childhood visits to the seaside, which is very much part of their new ethos.
Hala is a consultant nutritionist and dietitian who will be bringing an edgy and refreshing approach into our Cookery Theatre. With TV appearances on "How to Lose Weight Well", "Eat Well for Less" and "Sugar Free Farm", expect only healthy options!
Sunday 5th May, 2 pm Almonry Restaurant and Cafe We are delighted to feature the new Almonry Chef, Adrian Scarlett, in our Cookery Theatre. Adrian has worked in several promient venues in Cambridge and so we are really excited that he is now part of the Ely foodie scene. Today he will be showcasing his baking skills as he demonstrates some of the treats that make up the Almonry's legendary Afternoon Teas menu.
Sunday 5th May, 3 pm - Love a Taste What better way to end our first day in the Cookery Theatre than with a little bit of wine tasting, courtesy of Love a Taste. Co-owners, James and Andrea launched their new business with the aim to solve the wine lover's problem - how to find wines that are consisently good, that one wants to drink without breaking the bank. In addition, this clever couple have worked up a new bottling technique which means that a selection of six wines (each one equivalent to a small glass) can be sent through the post, as the packaging is letter box-friendly, which allows you to try before you invest in the larger bottles. 48 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
COOKERY THEATRE DEMONSTRATION PROGRAMME
Monday 6th May, 11 am - British Herb Kitchen Owner of British Herb Kitchen, Victoria, is on a mission to bring British herbs back to our tables. She would like to see the wonderful array of delicious and nutritious herbs that used to be grown in our soil, in our climate through Roman, Medieval and Elizabethan times. Somewhere along the line they fell from grace to be replaced by just six or eight supermarket standards - how true! In her demo she will be reminding us of how vital and amazing these herbs are in our recipes along with growing tips, health benefits and a little bit of quirky history. So let's go into the Herb Garden .....
MONDAY
Monday 7th May, 12 noon - Celebrity Chef Aldo Zilli We welcome the very charming and flamboyant Aldo into our kitchen on Monday. He has promised us an Italian Pasta Masterclass experience not to be missed. One of nine children, Aldo was born in Italy and like all good chefs, first learnt Italian cooking from his mother. He went on to be the founder and chef patron of some of London's most exciting and innovative restaurants, including Signor Zilli, Zilli Fish, Zilli Green and Zilli Cafe and has since worked as consultant, author and television personality and is the current food columnist in the Daily Express. This is a demonstration not to be missed!
Monday 7th May, 1 pm The Wholefood Warrior
Following this year's take on healthy foods we have our very own Wholefood Warrior who will be educating us on what is best for our bodies. Find out a wealth of knowledge as she whips up a few tasty, wholesome meals that we can all try at home. Yes apparently, healthy food can taste good - if you need convincing, come and along and see for yourself!
Monday 7th May, 2 pm Dr Sue (The Flamboyantly Fabulous) We welcome Dr Sue, food scientist and food historian who has a very quirky alter ego. Sue appears as the Grande Dame of TV cookery– the Flamboyantly Fabulous Fanny Craddock. Even though this year will mark 25 years since she died she is remembered as the eccentric post war first female celebrity chef. Fanny will be making an eel shaped cake and talking about eels past popularity. Sue has featured as a food science expert on BBC1, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5, plus as food history expert on the Great British Bake Off. She is a regular local and national radio presenter and writes on food history for Cambridge Edition magazine. What a step back in time!

John Hemmant, owner and winemaker of Chet and Waveney Vineyard will be telling us all about his family run Vineyard which produces award winning sparking and still white and rose wines. CAMPAIGN AMATEUR THEATRE CELEBRATE 50 YEARS 30th May - 1st JUNE
C
ampaign Amateur Theatre (CAT) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The company was the idea of Graham Fletcher and his wife Janet in 1968 and made up of RAF personnel from The Princess of Wales Hospital. They wanted to perform a production of West Side Story and recruited extra cast members from the local youth club. However, the production was doomed with the leading man breaking his leg, the leading lady falling ill, and other cast members being posted abroad! At this point CAT may have folded if it had not been for a loan from Cancer Research of £100 which enabled the company to stage their first musical production, Oliver, in 1969 at Needham Hall, with the church choir from St Mary’s Church making up the cast of Fagin’s Gang. It was at this time that Campaign Amateur Theatre became known simply as CAT. The original cat logo was Henry who belonged to founding members, Rex and Jan Lane. The company has made regular donations to Cancer Research UK, Strangeways laboratory, and other cancer charities over the last 5 decades. To date it has raised many thousands of pounds for cancer research and at the last production in October 2018, The Full Monty, £427.98 was raised for Prostate Cancer Research. The group is extremely grateful to its members and audiences for their generous support.
Ely College, Downham Road, Ely. Tickets are on sale from www.ticketsource.co.uk/cately Telephone: 07395 571726 Ticket prices: Adults £13.00 Under 12’s £10.00 Whilst it is good to celebrate past achievements, it is also important to look forward to the future of CAT. To continue to thrive we must endeavour to attract the best local talent, not just singers and actors but also musicians, technicians and backstage crew. Therefore, if you would like to be part of CAT and be involved in some amazing productions please contact us for more information on: Cat-ely@outlook.com. We would also welcome any person who would like to become a Friend of CAT or any businesses who would like to sponsor the society and help keep musical theatre thriving in Ely. For more information please contact us on Cat-ely@outlook.com

Friday 3rd May 2019 12.30 FOR 13.00 ELY CITY GOLF CLUB, CAMBRIDGE ROAD, ELY
Y
ou are invited to attend the next Ely Sports Aid Lunch. We are delighted to announce that the celebrity guest speaker will be Graham price MBE. Graham played 12 Tests for the British Lions in New Zealand and South Africa, making him the most capped Welsh player in Lions history. ARTS AND CRAFTS IN JUNE
L
ocal artist, Ted Coney will be Artist in Residence in Ely’s historic courthouse during the Isle of Ely Festival on Saturday 15th June and Sunday 16th June from 11am – 4pm on each day. He will be working on his latest painting about his family, ‘Who Stole The Toothpaste?’, using drawings made in the main courtroom and cells last year as part of his research. It is reputed that E.H. Shepard was inspired by the courtroom for his illustrations in ‘The Wind In The Willows’ which showed Toad’s downfall and punishment. Ted is also using images of Toad in his oil painting as a symbol of pomposity and greed. Ted’s ancestors made and lost a fortune in the pharmaceutical business over a hundred years ago, hence the title of his painting. Come and see Ted’s work in progress and also enjoy a rare glimpse into the interior of this historic building. Admittance is free. Ted Coney’s Family Portraits has just reopened for the 11th season on Ely’s Waterside. Booking is essential for a tour where you will be shown more of his paintings inspired by family stories. See Ted’s website www.tedconeysfamilyportraits.co.uk for more details. *preliminary canvases, drawings and references

ON THE RIVER IN JULY
41ST ANNUAL ELY AQUAFEST IS ON 7th JULY! Aquafest is the biggest annual event by the riverside in Ely, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Ely. It is an entertaining event for all ages. It is on July 7th and is open to the public at 11 a.m. and opened by the Mayor at 12 noon. Aquafest was started in 1978 as a thank you to the people of Ely. It was very simple in the beginning with stalls on Lavender Green and a raft race. Since its humble beginnings it has grown to encompass the whole of the Riverside, from Jubilee Gardens to Lavender Green. There is entertainment in the form of arena acts, music and displays on the river as well as the Raft Race. It also gives local charities a venue to raise funds and awareness. This year will see the return of Hannam’s Wake Hub, music from local artists, a birds of prey display, along with the ever popular 4th Dimension and other entertainment. There will be two Raft Races, one organised by the Scouts and the main Raft Race which will see hand-built rafts compete against each other in not only in a timed race, but also to see who can win the ‘Best Decorated Raft’. The Raft Race is very entertaining to watch and very exciting and a lot of fun to compete in. There will be food , crafts and public information stalls, fun fair rides, a beer tent and those stalls which will encourage you to try your luck and your skills. Come and join in the fun! Contact Viv Doji: vclariced@hotmail.com for more information.
