Hello Ely! The changing face of our high streets in England is a hot topic at the moment and with the national ‘Independents day’ coming up at the beginning of July we decided to take time to celebrate some of our lovely local shops here in the city centre. Do have a look at the feature in the centre pages. It’s been great to chat with business owners and retailers over the last month and find out why and how they do what they do. There is so much expertise and hardwork behind our Ely retailers and all of them offer that personal tailored service that you just don’t get anywhere else. The team at Visit Ely will be running their usual Facebook campaign highlighting local shops too. So, this issue is very much about commerce and trading. With that in mind, Ellie at the Museum tells us about the commercial history of the city on page 4 and there are some lovely new businesses and services to discover too. Cllr Lis Every explains a little of the plans forming to rejuvenate and reinvent the city centre on page 38. We welcome Mayor Mike Rouse back for another term as Mayor. See his article on page 10. You will notice that our groups and meets section is missing for this issue. It is avaliable in the online version for the summer and then will be back in print for September. Please take the time to update your entry if needed. Our next issue is the September/October one and the theme will very green! We’ll be exploring all things ECO and hearing from local businesses, new community projects, experts and campaigners on what they and we can do on a local level to reduce waste and help sustain the planet. Another hot topic! Please do get in touch via email or Facebook if you have ideas to contribute. The Ely Hero Awards are upon us so we hope to bring you all the info on that in our next issue too. We wish you the very best of summers whether you ‘staycation’ here in our lovely city or go off on a holiday further afield. I’m off to the Edinburgh Fringe for the first time in nearly 30 years so hope to be back with some interesting pics of suitably middle-aged shenanigans to share with you in the Autumn. I will also be checking out Mr Toppings’ new book shop!

Ely Museum
Ely has long been a place of commerce and trade, and it was King Henry III of England who officially granted a market to the Bishop of Ely on the 9th April 1224. A market charter, such as the one issued to Ely, was an important part of the local economy, though it is believed that a market started here as early as 1216! The market provided a place for people to sell, buy and trade their goods By the mid thirteenth century, the market had come to encompass many streets in Ely, including Market Street, Chequer Lane and the High Street Passage, all of which still include many local and national retailers today. Until 1801 when Market Day moved to Thursday, it originally took place each Saturday and included a variety of stalls selling meat, butter, cheese, wildfowl and fish. Until 1836, the
Emily Allen Community Engagement Officer at Ely Museum
Bishop of Ely received the income from the market, but responsibility and management of the market moved to the urban district council in 1918, and in 1974 transferred to East Cambridgeshire district council & its trading company
The market in Ely now includes a variety of regular farmers, craft, antiques and special themed markets throughout the year including weekday ‘minimarkets’, as well as the popular full markets on a Thursday, Saturday & Sunday The Market Place has changed over the years too. The ‘Jubilee Fountain’ a public drinking fountain was added in 1897
4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
to celebrate Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. As the Market Place was used for car parking in the 1930s, the fountain was relocated in 1939 to Archery Crescent. The War Memorial was also added to the Market Place and unveiled in April 1922. It records the names of the 165 men from the parishes of Ely St. Mary & Ely Holy Trinity who gave their lives between 1914-19

MIKE ROUSE MAYOR OF ELY
I am honoured to be elected as your Mayor and Chairman of the City Council for a second year. This year the Mayoress will be my older daughter Lauren, who takes over from Cassie. At the first meeting of the new City Council following the recent elections I welcomed new members: Councillors: Arnie Arnold, Sarah Bellow, Edward Carlsson Browne, Rebecca Denness, Matt Downey, Richard Morgan and Kevin Wilkins. They join Councillors: Sue Austen, Lis Every, Ian Lindsay, Chris Phillips, Dian Warman, Alison and Christine Whelan and me, in making the fifteen members. The election resulted in the loss of the Mayor Elect and I would like to pay tribute to all the hard work of Alison Arnold and say how personally sorry I am that she did not get the well-deserved opportunity to serve as Mayor. I also asked the council to place on record its appreciation of the enormous contribution that former councillor Richard Hobbs, four times Mayor of the city, made to the work of the council over many years. Ever ready to take on responsibilities, Richard Hobbs was a selfless servant of the city and along with his wife Pat, tireless in his efforts to improve Ely and the lives of the people living in the parish. I congratulate Cllr Sue Austen or being elected Deputy Mayor and look forward to working with her. I also congratulate her on becoming ViceChairman of the District Council Congratulations too to Cllr Lis Every on being elected Vice-Chairman of the County Council and Chairman of East Cambs – we have friends in high places now! I appreciate the honour and the responsibility that the office of Mayor entails and will do my utmost to serve everyone’s best interests. Lauren and I look forward to attending as many events as possible, so please ask us. The best way is through Marianne Pickering at the City Council as she keeps the diary. Lauren plays football at Cambridge United and this year, among everything else, we would like to support local sporting organisations as a great contributor to physical and mental welfare. We look forward to meeting up with you soon and thanks to the Elyi I’ll try and keep you informed of what we have been doing.

BOOST FOR ‘SAVE ELY CINEMA’ CAMPAIGN FROM ‘YESTERDAY’ FILM STAR HIMESH PATEL The British Asian actor, Himesh Patel, best known as Tamwar Massod on Eastenders is playing the lead in a new big-budget film Yesterday by Danny Boyle, out this Summer. Born in Cambridgeshire, Himesh heard about the campaign to Save Ely Cinema through his local connections and is keen to lend his support. ‘I've visited Ely several times and know what an asset the independent cinema is for the City. I’m really pleased to be supporting the Save Ely Cinema campaign and I hope Babylon Arts is able to raise the money it needs to keep it going’ Watch the clip of Himesh talking about the campaign
here https://youtu.be/mxrrulWEU90 The initial target was to raise £3000 by 1st June to cover the annual warranty and maintenance costs of the cinema kit. Caroline Cawley from Babylon ARTS who manage the cinema said ‘We’ve been overwhelmed by people's support and have smashed our first target. We now need to continue our appeal to raise the remaining £7000 to meet our over-all target of £17,000. We’d like to say a big thank you to all our original pledgers and ask everyone to continue to coming to see more films, more often at our riverside cinema to ensure its long term survival.’
ELY CINEMA You can find out more about the campaign or donate online at www. babylonarts.org.uk or at the cinema Himesh Patel his voice to the call to save Ely Cinema from closure. 20 | Elyi Magazine | adds www.elyimagazine.com 20

ELY WILDSPACE NEWS Kingfisher nest sites Regular visitors to Roswell Pits and the river will have seen kingfishers flash by, or if luckier watched them feeding and resting. Prompted by an extremely generous donation to Ely Wildspace from the family of Sailing Club member Jill Sallis, who sadly died earlier this year, we are embarking on a scheme to provide additional kingfisher nesting sites in the area. Expert Cliff Carson, who was the Middle Level Commissioners’ Environmental Officer, has investigated the area with help from Wildspace and Sailing Club volunteers. Kingfishers have already nested in holes in sheet piling, and Cliff has identified sites where additional holes may be drilled. Following approval from the Environment Agency we hope to complete the nest creation work in the autumn. Maltings swift watch Ely Wildspace is working with Action for Swifts to monitor swift nest boxes located under the eaves of the Ely Maltings. Swifts are extraordinary birds which visit the UK for three months each year, livening our evening skies with their dramatic aerial displays. But numbers have halved in just 20 years, partly because of loss of suitable nesting sites. Local enthusiasts led by Dick Newell have now installed 36 boxes at the Maltings, which are being monitored to see if they’re occupied. Last year 11 pairs were thought to have bred here. Other nest boxes have been installed at Ely cemetery, St Mary’s church and at Centre E. If you want to get involved in these or other Ely Wildspace activities or find out more about upcoming Wildspace events visit: www.elywildspace.org.uk.

AT THE HEART OF ELY Independent retailers are the lifeblood of UK high streets. They offer specialist products and services with unique knowledge and passion for their community. Independents’ Day is the national campaign to celebrate and promote the UK’s independent retailers on 4th July. It is a not-for-profit campaign that exists to support and promote independent retail businesses across the UK all year round, but with an annual focus on July 4th: ‘Independents’ Day’ itself. Our Ely Independent retailers offer choice, diversity of product and service, tradition as well as innovation, and a more personal service to customers. They are also job creators and contributors to our local and national economies. With retail spending under pressure, never have they needed our support more! So, as a shopper, Independents’ Day UK is your chance to show some love for our hardworking Ely retailers, the shops you value most both in your local communities and online: the ones you wouldn’t want to live without. Make July the month you revisit Ely City Centre and encourage our shopkeepers by exploring all that they have to offer. Our local shops are run by dedicated local people who are the heart and soul of Ely city Centre. Turn the page to see our featured shops. Here is an update from The Visit Ely team (Tourism, Town Centre and Events) which is ably lead by Tracey Harding based in Oliver Cromwell House.
Celebrating our Independents!
VISIT ELY will once again be joining the national celebrations by highlighting some of the many independent shops that make up Ely’s great shopping experience. Follow us on Facebook during July where we will be featuring the wide variety and range of goods available on Ely’s High Street.
Welcome to City Centre Ranger!
We are so excited to introduce our new City Centre Ranger, Kerry. Whilst many towns and cities have rangers, this is the first time Visit Ely has held such a position within their team. Kerry will be a physical, uniformed presence within the city centre and will be key to ensuring that the centre looks and operates efficiently. She will be our ears and eyes and provide a much needed link between the various bodies that look after our city centre.
Borrow Bags!
Following our launch last October, our bid to become the first plastic bag free city continues to gather momentum. Ely’s Borrow Bag scheme, part of the national Morsbags initiative was 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
brought to Visit Ely by the fabulous team at Ely’s specialist sewing shop, Sew Much to Do. In just over 6 months, we have nearly reached our second target of making and distributing 1,000 bags. The sign up of nearly 25 businesses and the involvement by the community has been overwhelming. However, we still need more people and organisations to come forward to help make borrow bags. So, if you would like to be involved and especially if you know your way around a sewing machine, then please contact us or check out the information on our website.

What is happening in support of our city centre? From Cllr. Elisabeth Every
H
TR EE T
igh streets and town centres lie at the heart of our communities and local economies, creating jobs, nurturing small businesses and injecting billions of pounds into our economy. But the way we shop and the way that communities use their high streets and town centres is changing: we are shopping more online, making fewer big shopping trips and shopping ‘little and more often’.
GH
S
A
s a result, Ely City Centre could decline in the future despite our best efforts with an excellent heritage offer, free car parking, independent shops and a thriving market. It is recognised that a new ‘place’, ‘destination’ or ‘experience’ approach can reverse this trend with a transformation programme resulting in a mix of independent shops, events, community facilities, accommodation and start up offices, but we need a plan and funding to achieve this.
U FUT
RE
I H S
E
ast Cambridgeshire District Council and the Combined Authority have recently collaborated with local businesses and other Ely stakeholders on a plan for the High Street and surrounding areas in order to submit an Ely Expression of Interest for the Futures High Street Fund. This Government Fund allows us one bid up to £25m. If we are successful, we would move to Phase 2 where we would be supported by professionals who would work with us on the feasibility and undertake much wider consultation for the final submission. If we are unsuccessful we will receive feedback and will re-bid in March 2020. This is an exciting opportunity for Ely which could provide the funding we need to regenerate the City Centre. We should find out if we are successful very soon. If you would like further information on this initiative please contact Councillor Lis Every on Lis.every@eastcambs.gov.uk
ELY PERSPECTIVE
From Ely Perspective Chair, Dan Block
E
ly Perspective takes a great interest in our city centre and high street businesses. In recent years we have created a number of projects designed to encourage visitors to the city centre.
O
ne project that you may have already spotted is our Then & Now photographs. A number of our businesses have high quality prints of their premises displayed in their windows, which were taken many years (often up to a century) ago. These old photos provide a fascinating insight into Ely as it used to be, and being able to take a step back and compare them to the current shop fronts can be quite thought provoking! This project was so popular that by the time you read this we will have launched our second round of Then & Now photos.
W
e have also erected a number of commemorative plaques around the city. Situated at locations of local historical importance, these plaques are a fantastic link to our past, and make you realise just how much history Ely has. You can even buy one of our leaflets at Oliver Cromwell's House which takes you on a walking tour around many notable signs, plaques and architectural features. We are surrounded by interesting buildings and it's great to be reminded of this!
F
inally, we are excited to be moving closer to our eagerly awaited renovation of Steeple Row behind the High Street. We hope that our plans will bring much needed improvements to the area, and in a high profile area for tourists, the link between our beloved cathedral and the city centre will be strengthened and enhanced. Look out for more developments on this project in the coming months. Ely is a fantastic, vibrant city and we're looking forward to making it even better. 38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

THE LITTLE DOWNHAM PLOUGH JUMPERS
The Seven fool hardy people known as The Little Downham Plough Jumpers are getting geared up for a big day on 6th July. They are planning to jump out of an aeroplane for Magpas Air Ambulance and have been busy fundraising since January with car washes, treasure hunts, golf day, quizzes and more. Its definitely been a team effort. To help distract them from the looming danger they have given themselves special super hero names and even been issued with a regulation cape and mask, made by local supporter Jane Foulds. The jumpers have also received some great sponsorship from local companies and they have publicised the endeavour on the radio. Follow their activities on Facebook: https://www. facebook.com/groups/247664346171940. All for Magpas Air Ambulance (The real heroes). The team will all be in the pub the Plough Pub, Little Downham (106 Main Street) for their last supper on 5th July, before the jump which is the next day on 6th July at Sibson Airfield Peterborough. Come and say hello and wish them luck. All donations for Magpas Air Ambulance will be welcomed.
SING! CHOIRS CONTINUING TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL GOOD CAUSES WALKS TO AN AMAZING NEW TOTAL! A super singing opportunity for Sing! The Prospects Trust is looking to extend its reach and expand its horizons. Celebrating its 30th anniversary later this year, the organic farm that provides work opportunities for adults with learning disabilities is planning to open a really GREEN grocery shop at the Lighthouse Centre Ely. Prospects Trust Unwrapped will open its new venture at Lighthouse Centre Ely later this year Maz Baker Development Manager said “We see this new initiative as a great opportunity to help people with additional needs into future employment. We have always dreamed of bringing our organic edibles to Ely and we know that now is the time to offer an affordable, sustainable and local way to shop seasonal produce. We are keen to work with other local growers and producers too, creating a destination shop with a difference”. Giles Cornell of the Lighthouse said “We are excited to be working in partnership with The Prospects Trust to create a real social enterprise that has community at the heart of its trading. The Prospects Trust has over 30 years of experience in growing people with additional needs alongside growing organic produce. We have shop front ripe for local consumers and are looking forward to opening our doors to this new venture.” The Prospects Trust is a socially inspiring enterprise supporting people with disabilities to take an active role in farming & growing on an accessible 18acre organic farm in Cambridgeshire. ELY CATHEDRAL TO PROVIDE THE INSPIRATION FOR NEW POETRY AS PART OF UNIQUE PROJECT Ely Cathedral and its founder St Etheldreda will provide the inspiration for new poetry from writers of all ages as part of major new project to stimulate creativity. Prize-winning poet Jen Hadfield will bring Places of Poetry to Ely, using the incredible story of the foundation of the cathedral to help people pen their own verse. As part of Places of Poetry a stunning digital map of England and Wales has been created to encourage people to think about the environment and history around them. People can pin their own poem on the map, which consists of two layers: an artistic map, based on decorative seventeenth-century county maps, and a second layer of Ordnance Survey data, allowing users to zoom in to a high level of detail. Jen will work with almost 200 pupils from two local schools, Lantern Primary and Ely St Mary’s. They will learn about the life of the cathedral’s founder, St Etheldreda, an Anglo-Saxon princess
who later became a queen. Etheldreda later turned her back on royal life to become a nun and later the founding abbess of Ely Monastery. Pupils from Ely St Mary’s will also go to Ely Museum to find out about Fenland life through stories. Children will “pin” their poems on the digital map. Places of Poetry is led by the poet and broadcaster Paul Farley, of Lancaster University and the academic Professor Andrew McRae at the University of Exeter. “The aim is to encourage people to think about heritage from different angles, such as environmental, industrial, religious, cultural or sporting. We want to celebrate the diversity, history and character of the places around us.” says Paul. The project is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England, and is made possible by partnerships with the Ordnance Survey, The Poetry Society and National Poetry Day.
