Dear Readers

As I am writing this we are in a heatwave. Hopefully it will stay fine for all the school fairs and other outdoor events during the summer months! One of the biggest events of the year is Aquafest which is put on by both Rotary groups in Ely as a free event for local people. They already have a full programme of performances on Lavender Green and Jubilee Gardens down by the Riverside. Go to page 40 to get the info (correct at time of printing)

July also sees the return of Ely’s Pride event which is held in and around Ely Maltings and open to everyone and KD Theatre continue their tradition of exciting open air theatre for all the family in the Dean’s Garden. This year it is the children's classic " Wind in the Willows" not to be missed!

We have had some lovely submissions from local poets and writers for this issue. We have some talented people here in Ely and it is such a pleasure to celebrate them. I love it when the content of this mag is driven by you so do feel free to send in small items for inclusion. Space is limited of course but I’ll always do my best to print poems etc (especially if they are good!)

Have a lovely summer!

Bridget

Rowan is a vibrant, independent, registered charity providing an arts centre and forest school for adults with learning disabilities in Chesterton.

We develop the skills and potential of our students while improving their happiness, health and wellbeing. We also deliver much needed respite to families and carers.

Rowan provides a range of creative workshops in: Woodwork, Ceramics, Textiles, Print, Mixed media, Drama, Music

We are open Mon-Fri, 9am to 3pm, for 50 weeks a year. We arrange regular trips to theatres, museums and exhibitions to explore art and culture further. In 2020 we launched Rowan Rangers, our new forest school which enables students to be creative and connect with nature.

We have a strong social enterprise ethos and accept large and small commissions from individuals and organisations. We also produce artworks and other items to sell online and at exhibitions and events. In addition, Rowan runs a range of community art classes during evenings and weekends.

We believe that people living with a disability should have the same choice, quality of life, opportunities and aspirations as others and with your support we shall continue to make that possible.

If you, or someone you know would like to join us why not become a student at Rowan? https://www.rowanhumberstone.org.uk/

Medical Centre update...

We are excited to announce that with immediate effect we will be starting to use our group name “Mereside Medical”.

Cathedral Medical Centre will now be known as Cathedral Medical Centre – a Mereside Medical Practice.

Although our name is changing, our team isn’t.

Mereside Medical has grown out of the Staploe Medical Centre, through mergers with Cathedral Medical Centre in 2013, and Haddenham Surgery in 2019. The same five GP Partners run all three sites together with our excellent team.

At Mereside Medical we believe that a local population is best served by its own local practice and a known clinical team. Our vision is:

Empowered patients, fulfilled staff, healthier communities: Your local practice.

You will soon start to see changes to our letters, websites and more. It will take time for this transition to complete, but in the meantime, service will continue as normal.

If you have any queries on this please contact the Mereside Medical Practice Management team on cpicb.mereside-pm@nhs.net.

Dear Residents,

I know how valuable local assets are to every community. It is therefore important that we do all we can to protect them.

The Community Ownership Fund does this by enabling communities to take ownership of assets at risk of closure, sale or dereliction so they can be enjoyed once again by local people.

Both parish councils and incorporated voluntary or community organisations are invited to apply for the latest round of funding, which is open from 31 May – 12 July 2023.

Up to £1 million is available for all asset types (which is an increase on the previous limit of £250,000) and funds can cover up to 80 per cent of the total capital funds required, with applicants required to raise the other 20 per cent from other sources.

If you can think of any assets which could benefit from this funding, you might want to consider applying via https://www.gov. uk/government/publications/communityownership-fund-prospectus/communityownership-fund-prospectus--3. Please also feel free to contact me if I can be of any help.

Best wishes,

MP for South East CambridgeshireLucy

Frazer is Conservative MP for South East Cambridgeshire and a barrister serving as Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport since February 2023.

Firstly (another) HUGE thank you to everyone who supports EAAA, by whatever means. What you are doing is working but this is no reason to rest on our laurels – our target to cover all our costs continues high – about £17m in fact! So, when you see that little red collection box ‘winking’ at you by the till, please respond with a few coins, some coins, Lots of coins! Purchasing methodology is changing, rapidly, so please carry real money even though you often use ‘plastic’ to pay.

There are, however, many other ways through which you can support us and help make a difference. 2022 saw EAAA tasked with over 2500 missions, attending 443 cardiac arrests, 386 road traffic collisions, 268 falls, 354 other medical emergencies and, would you believe, 60 assaults! Unfortunately, where cardiac arrests are concerned, survival rates for patients who do not receive early bystander CPR or defibrillation are incredibly low, so we know anytime the bells ring for a cardiac arrest mission, time is essential. The wife of one such patient, Chris, was able to give CPR followed by the crew’s assessment, critical care on scene and subsequent treatment at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Recovery has not been straightforward, Chris having suffered two strokes, a bleed on his brain and another cardiac arrest. He spent four weeks in a coma, six in critical care plus another week on a ward. Nearly a year on, Chris is recovering well and reflects how crucially important to his survival had been his wife’s CPR, EAAA critical care and the whole sequence of support.

To get involved and to give more patients like Chris a chance of survival please volunteer to support our hugely worthwhile charity. Our ‘Trek 24’ walks are back I Suffolk and Norfolk – why not join in, have a great day in the countryside and support EAAA in the process. Or just volunteer at an event not too far from you - do please get in touch via info@eaaa.org.uk

Inspired by the first pages of the bible, textile artist Jacqui Parkinson re-imagines an amazing story in brilliant silks, dazzling metallic leathers and gold leaf – and more than eight million stitches!

Jacqui Parkinson’s work is eye-catching, designed to be attractive for viewers of all ages. Whilst the serious message of God’s good earth and man’s impact on it underlies the entire exhibition, the embroidery itself is bold and exuberant.

Jacqui uses unusual techniques: “I start with antique bedsheets, which hold their own tales of life and death. I gradually build up my stories by quilting the sheets and painting them. Then I add layers of silk, which I stitch into place using a special free motion sewing machine which allows me to stitch my ‘drawings’. Then I add gold leaf and metallic leathers as finishing touches, overall creating great richness - a feast for the eye!

The Very Reverend Mark Bonney, Dean of Ely Cathedral, said, ‘The book of Genesis invites us into the wonder of God’s work in creation and helps us better understand our place within it.

It’s an ancient story, but highly relevant today, with a message of hope – of God with us - and its call for us to care for our amazing world.

We warmly invite you to come to Ely Cathedral and see Jacqui Parkinson’s extraordinary re-telling of the creation story. With astonishing designs and colours, Jacqui’s work provides interest, enjoyment and spiritual insights. I think that everyone who sees this exhibition will find it both beautiful and inspiring.’

SCHOOL’S OUT

NO PLANS? NO PROBLEM! Visit better.org.uk/hive-holiday-activities or scan the QR code for more information.

Whether it’s with friends or with family, discover a world of fun for all ages this school holiday at The Hive Leisure Centre.

I’m Ali, and I’m a Registered General Nurse having initially trained at Addenbrookes Hospital in 1989 and I have been working as a nurse in General Practice for over 18 years. I became aware in 2020, that many GP practices had stopped providing ear wax removal on the NHS and this has caused a great problem for many people who suffer from excessive wax build up which causes isolation, discomfort and hearing loss.

In Oct 2021 wax removal became a CQC regulated activity for all nurses, to maintain safety for patients. It is very important that you see a regulated professional who adheres to the CQC standards of being: Safe, Effective, Responsive, Caring &, Well led.

What is ear wax and can you prevent earwax build-up

You can’t prevent earwax. It’s there to protect your ears from dirt and germs. But you can keep using eardrops to soften the wax to reduce it building up. This will help the wax fall out on its own and can prevent blocked ears. However some people are troubled by ear wax throughout their life and this is when professional removal is needed. Causes

You might have earwax build-up because:

• you just have more wax in your ears – some people do naturally produce more wax that others.

• you have hairy or narrow canals (the tubes that link the eardrum and outer ear)

• of your age – wax gets harder and more difficult to fall out as we get older.

• of hearing aids, earplugs and other things you put in your ear – these can push the wax further in

How to tell if your ear is blocked with earwax

You can have:

• earache

• difficulty hearing

• itchiness

• dizziness

• an ear infection

• sounds such as high-pitched tones coming from inside the ear (tinnitus)

• Once the earwax is removed, these symptoms usually improve. Contact me to book an appointment.

Wax removal on the NHS

Unfortunately this service has been significantly reduced over the years and many GP practices are no longer offering the service.

How you can treat earwax build-up yourself

Do not use your fingers or any objects like cotton buds to remove earwax. This will push it in and make it worse.

Putting in olive or almond oil in a few times a week can help to prevent build up. Over 2 weeks lumps of earwax may fall out of your ear, especially at night when you’re lying down.

There’s no evidence that ear candles or ear vacuums get rid of earwax.

If this is unsuccessful, speak to a pharmacist as they might recommend you use sodium bicarbonate drops to dissolve the earwax.

The earwax should fall out on its own or dissolve after about a week.

Do not use drops if you have a hole in your eardrum (a perforated eardrum).

If your ear wax continues to cause a problem or your ear is badly blocked, you might need this professionally removing by a trained practitioner. Please make contact to book an appointment for ear irrigation

ELY WILDSPACE

I love nature, and have felt this way from as far back as I can recall. It all began when I was seven years old and innocently stuck a stick in the ground in a flower bed, and a few weeks later it sprouted a bud. I wasn’t surprised, surely that’s what a stick is supposed to do. But apparently it was quite unusual, and the wild rose went on to become a major feature in our back garden, although I suspect that was mostly because I would have burst into tears had my Mum or Dad tried to remove it.

A seed was planted in me all those years ago, and it has blossomed into a passion. Although now I refer to it by a different name: conservation.

One of the main reasons why Mrs B and I decided to move to our delightful city is the many wonderful wild spaces that can be found in it, and all around it. Discovering the country park was a joy, and the riverside walks there, at Queen Adelaide and at Cawdle Fen have become a regular adventure for us. It was on one of these strolls a few years ago that I saw a sign describing a site that was used by ground nesting birds, and that the area was managed by Ely Wildspace. Following a bit of digging, and plucking up the courage to get in touch, I haven’t looked back.

Whether it be preparing and launching Tern rafts, tidying Nightingale nesting sites, building bat boxes, coppicing hedgerows or monitoring moths, I have loved every minute of it!

I must admit to a creeping sense of helplessness and hopelessness as climate change has morphed into an environmental catastrophe. Becoming involved with Ely Wildspace has turned that milieu into a feeling of agency. I know that I can’t save the world, but I can help to save my small yet precious part of it.

If you would like to know more about us, or get involved, drop us a line at lcpre@elywildspace. org.uk. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and at www.elywildspace.org.uk.

Sunday, June the 4th saw the sun shine, which came as a bit of a relief to the seven sets of gardeners that opened up their gardens to public view for the afternoon. This has been a challenging year garden wise, with the gardens taking a long time to wake up. Our aim for the afternoon is to share our gardens with you, and by doing so, to raise money for the national garden

David Field, in his first season as 4th Team Captain, said: "this is a strong start to the summer league season for us, and we're looking forward to pushing on and trying to clinch one of the two promotion spots.”

Rachel Peacock, Ely Tennis Club Chair, said “This ongoing success is fantastic for our Club and the Ely Community, and the recent introduction of team coaching sessions with Head Coach Jack Pearson will no doubt be having an impact.

And the club celebrated the Roman Garos tournament in Paris with a suitable Gallic themed event in June where players were treated to French style games and food. Keep your eyes peeled for the Wimbledon Day in July.

scheme, so that they can pass it on to a range of charities, large and small. Large ones include Macmillan; small ones include Horatio’s Garden who build small gardens in hospitals accessible to patients in hospital beds.

We had 527 adults pass through our garden, with numbers much the same for the other gardens. Refreshments were available at two of the gardens and Ely Methodist Church

In all, on the day £6031.25 was raised for the NGS. This is the highest amount yet, and we would like to thank all who contributed to raising the money. We hope that you all found something to take away with you to do in your own garden, and that you will want to come again next year.

Are you an Ely resident? Would you like to share your garden? The usual answer is ‘My garden’s not good enough.’ Neither was ours. These aren’t show gardens; the rest of the year we get to play in them, change a bit here and a bit there. If you like the idea of sharing your garden with other people, have a chat with me. It really isn’t that daunting! I can be contacted via our website on elyopengardens.weebly.com

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update

Welcome to The City of Ely Council 2023!

Following the elections and co-option process in May, we’re delighted to introduce to you the 15 councillors who will make up the City of Ely council for the next four years and represent our thriving city. The councillors are already becoming heavily involved in their roles with the annual programme of meetings underway – as well as regular full council meetings, each councillor also sits on a variety of committees and working groups, and some provide representation on external bodies too.

Full council, committee meetings and our Annual Parish Meeting are all open to the public, so if you’d like to raise questions, bring comments, or just see how the most local level of government functions, then we’d love to see you there! Take a look at our website at www.cityofelycouncil.org. uk for details of upcoming meetings.

In a ceremony at the Maltings on the 15th May, Cllr Chris Phillips was elected and installed as the Mayor of Ely for the coming year along with Mrs Mary Rone, the Mayoress Cllr Phillips has been part of the council since 2013 and is looking forward to a year of connecting with a wide range of people and groups who make up our city’s vibrant community life. If you’re planning any local events and would like to invite the Mayor, Mayoress or another council representative to attend then please contact the council on info@ cityofelycouncil.org.uk.

Celebrating Pride in Ely!

June is traditionally the month in which LGBTQ+ Pride is celebrated internationally – though in Ely the season is extended with our very own Pride event taking place at the end of July. On Saturday 29th July, from 10am to 10pm, Jubilee Gardens will become a riot of colour thanks to the many months of hard work of the Pride in Ely team –and the whole event is free to attend!

Ely City Councillors are looking forward to once again having a presence at the event and showing our support for all the members of our community with diverse sexualities and gender identities. Last year was a fantastic day out with superb entertainment, stalls where you can find out more about what community organisations have to offer, great traders, and overall a beautiful atmosphere. We look forward to seeing many of you there for this year’s event.

Moosha P. Cambridge is continuing her tour of Cambridgeshire having arrived in Ely in February, she is now off and about this summer making appearances at pride celebrations all over the county.

The sculpture was painted by members of The Kite Trust and Encompass Network working with local artist Hilary Cox Condron back in 2020 and displayed as part of the Cows About Cambridge art trail in 2021. Since then Moosha has visited a range of local libraries and has now arrived for a stint outside the Sessions House, Lynn Road in Ely.

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION MARKS

D-DAY ANNIVERSARY - 6th June

D-Day - the day 79 years ago, when tens of thousands of Allied troops landed on the beaches of Normandy, was marked by the City of Ely branch of the Royal British Legion. An Act of Remembrance at Ely’s war memorial commemorated the day in 1944, which altered the course of British history and the outcome of the Second World War.

A wreath was laid by the City’s newly-elected Mayor, Cllr Chris Phillips, and the Branch Standard was borne by David Martin, the branch Chairman. Principal trumpeter of the City of Ely Military Band, Laurine Green, played the Last Post before a Silence, followed by Reveille to end the silence.

City of Ely RBL branch’s Vice-Chairman, Neil Grimston, recited the Exhortation at the beginning of the ceremony and the Kohima Epitaph which marked its end.

Another wreath will be laid at Ely’s war memorial on Thursday 27th July to mark the 70th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended the Korean War.

ELY STANDARD BEARER HONOURED

The Standard Bearer for the City of Ely branch of the Royal British Legion has been honoured with one of the Legion’s most prestigious awards. The Gold Award Badge for meritorious service for over a quarter of a century was presented to Tom Brown at a ceremony at The Maltings in Ely. He has been a standard bearer for the RBL at both branch and county level for over 20 years. In the annual Cambridgeshire competition he was runner-up for many years before winning in 2018.

Tom, who served in the Third Battalion of the Parachute Regiment, is also the regiment’s national standard bearer, attending a number of the Paras’ events throughout the year, including the annual trip to Arnhem in the Netherlands.

He is a dedicated RBL fund raiser and is a familiar figure on Ely Market Place during the annual Poppy Appeal, turning out every day, whatever the weather, and his efforts alone have raised over £50,000, contributing to the many hundreds of thousands of pounds that the Ely district has raised over the same period.

City of Ely branch chairman, David Martin said: “Tom exemplifies the motto ‘Service not Self’ as shown by his unwavering commitment to all he does whether at branch or county committee, standard bearing or for the Poppy Appeal.”

Ringing the changes for the Coronation

A novice with less than two months training was among those who rang the bells of St Mary’s parish church for an hour as crowds flocked to Ely city centre to watch the Coronation service from Westminster Abbey broadcast on big screens at the church and at Ely Cathedral.

Wendy Seaford was among those who answered the call to ‘Ring for the King’ which also saw experienced ringers Alison Evans and Jennifer Wallace returning to St Mary’s and other novices joining bell ringers at St James’ Church, Stretham.

A busy four days for the district’s bell ringers had begun on Friday, with a quarter peal of 1350 changes rung at St Mary’s to mark both the Coronation and the 1350th anniversary of Ely’s foundation. It was also an 80th birthday compliment to Barry Bass, a retired bell ringer, and a farewell compliment to St Mary’s Rector, the Rev Chris Hill who retired on 30 April.

On Bank Holiday Monday, Big Help Out Day, bells were rung at Haddenham, Soham, Wilburton and Wicken, all churches in the Ely diocese whose bells are without a regular band of ringers.

“About 30 ringers from a number of local towers were involved, including several more new recruits, and ages ranged from 12 to 94,” said John Mitchell, St Mary’s tower secretary.

A team of six of St Mary’s most experienced ringers, including tower captain Simon Smith, rang a quarter peal of 1260 changes to mark the end of Coronation Day in lieu of lighting of the Beacon on St Mary’s Green which had to be cancelled because of bad weather.

“We are always delighted to welcome anyone interested in finding out more about bell ringing and ‘Ring for the King’ has been a wonderful way to encourage interest.”

EAST CAMBRIDGESHIRE COMMUNITY FUND

Community groups are being urged to apply for grants of up to £1000 being offered by East Cambridgeshire District Council. The money can be spent on new or existing projects designed to improve the quality of life for residents.

To find out more visit the Community Fund website page: https://www.eastcambs.gov.uk/finance/ east-cambridgeshire-community-fund

The aim of this small community grants scheme is to support local community groups to provide new or develop existing community services and initiatives that improve the quality of life for residents living in East Cambridgeshire.

There must be evidence of how the project meets local need, involves and empowers local people, ensures equality of access and an indication of how the project will be sustained. This grant scheme cannot give capital funding for buildings but can be used to buy equipment for the project.

The East Cambridgeshire Community Fund will be open to applications between the 30 June and 11 August 2023.

Our wonderful Babylon Young Curator, Beth, is getting the final details in place for her first curated exhibition, to be shown at Babylon Gallery from 29th June to 23rd July 2023

I Am Because We Are is an exhibition that focuses on community, culture and humanity. It explores the philosophy of Ubuntu, a belief that as humans we have a responsibility to one another, and that we are a culmination of the people around us. We are really looking forward to Beth bringing a wave of fresh ideas, along with a new range of audience, to the gallery.

Now in its fourth year, save the date for Window Wanderland 2023! The event will take place from 3 – 5 November 2023.

This community led event will bring colour and light to the streets of Ely, once again turning them into a magical outdoor gallery for the weekend.

The event first came to Ely in 2020, bought together by The Stained Glass Museum, Babylon Arts and this year, a fantastic committee of local volunteers too. More than 350 homes and businesses have now participated in this event in Ely, with Window Wanderland events also growing in popularity across the country.

Window Wanderland is a fun family-friendly event, that sees people create illuminated displays in windows. You can use the streetfacing windows of your home, business, school, nursery, car, shop, or front garden. A map showing the locations of illuminated window displays is then created to form an after-dark walking trail.

Start thinking about your own window! All ages and abilities are encouraged to join-in. We’ll share more details , including the map to register your window on, later in the summer.

Until then, follow us @WindowWanderEly on social media to keep up to date with information and inspiration.

Nature's Philosophy

Nocturnal birds in sibilant causerie

Forest creatures in distant revelry

While nature's blanket dims their rivalry

And stills the air to peaceful reverie

How brief is this tranquillity

As hostile meetings in darkened shrubbery

Remind, if only momentarily

That man alone enjoys in camaraderie

Thank you to our two readers for contributing these poems!

for my dear friend, John

Keeping vigil, we shared our solitude, you sat fishing, me stood meditating, both paying attention to the moment, like waiting yet not waiting for anything.

When I watch the fish rise I think of you and when I see the bittern at twilight, or the harriers over the reedbed that saw you and I out in all weathers.

Our sacred space not made by human hands, but formed of willows reaching for the light, the fen river flowing without a sound and the reeds bearing seeds in midwinter.

Three seasonal trails highlighting the best of the UK’s wetland nature will be running at WWT Welney until February 2024 as part of a partnership between renowned illustrator Sir Quentin Blake and the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust.

WWT Welney will run three seasonal trails with guides using selected -little seen before - illustrations of watery nature from Quentin Blake to help inspire visitors to view the wonder of wetland nature in a different way.

Each of the trails, will highlight the amazing nature that arrives each season. They will run alongside a range of art and illustration activities to inspire all ages and abilities, helping everyone experience nature in new, unexpected ways.

Commenting on the partnership Quentin Blake said: “I am delighted to be sharing my pictures with WWT sites and their visitors through the Drawn to Water experience. This project appealed to me because I have a lifelong fascination of drawing wetland wildlife, especially birds. I can't quite explain why but it may be because like us, they are on two legs and have expressive gestures. The drawings you will see are from my own personal archive, and many have rarely been seen in public before. Through Drawn to Water I hope that seeing my artwork in places where these creatures are thriving will allow new audiences to enjoy wetland wildlife as much as I do, perhaps prompting a few people to pick up a pen, pencil or even a quill and do their own drawing.”

SIGNS OF SUMMER – the arrival of migratory birds

‘This morning, out early because the emphatic thrush on the tree outside the bedroom window was so loud that further sleep was impossible. I was in no hurry. It was a long time before I had to be back to pick up the chores of the day, like trying to talk to students about things they were supposed to have studied. My route, one of the usual ones, takes me along the stream, and past John’s farm, then across the bridge and up the hill to the wood. It was a morning for dawdling, and looking, and stopping to smell things. The clear air was tranquil, the sun still not hot, the dew enough to wet my boots. Good to be alive and awake. As I passed the farm I heard behind me a very loud ‘Cuckoo!’, and then another, and then on my right (my good ear side), close, a cuckoo flew. And it then perched on the yew tree in John’s garden. You don’t often get a clear sight of them, heavily built birds, far too big you would think to sit on a dunnock’s nest to lay its egg – in fact, I have only seen a few in my whole life. It called again, and again, while I stood still. It’s only the male who calls, and that seems somehow appropriate, given its traditional association with cuckoldry. But birds take no heed of that. In a very few weeks its call will change to a single ‘cuck’ –which gives it its northern name, gowk.

The looked-for swifts, my ever-welcome birds of summer, came back last week – they usually arrive around May 6th, just as they usually go on or about August 6th, and there seem to be more this year than in the last few years. They are lazily – well, it looks effortless – hawking along the hedge by the stream, feeding on the plankton of the air.

The sickle wings slice the sky, and their steep turns, wings motionless, never fail to exhilarate. It lifts the heart, to see their swoop and sheer and elegance. They used to nest under the pantiles of the house opposite and would fly in at speed straight into the little gaps, straight onto their nests. Something perfect.’

A short extract from To Everything a Season by Charles Moseley (Merlin Unwin Books). A beautifully crafted personal and reflective account of many years of the changing seasons in the Cambridgeshire Fens. The author ponders the miracle of the rich gift of life. A book suffused with a gentle humour, with a deep love and sympathy for our fellow creatures. Charles tackles what we have done to the world of which we are not owners or masters but stewards, not only for our children but for the whole web of life on which everything depends.

ROYAL POETRY COMPETITION

What would you do if you were King Charles for the day?

ELY LIFELONG LEARNERS

Ely Lifelong Learners offer a ten week course on London Through Literature with tutor Ros Connelly. London is a fictional place - one of the most written about places in literature. What we think about London has often been created by the imagination of writers. This course will discuss ways in which writers have used real places

www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 55

and re-created them for their own ends, giving us a deeper and multi-layered understanding of London. The course will be thematic rather than chronological (although covering several centuries of writings), looking at the importance of preconceived ideas and first impressions and how work, the legal profession, crime and punishment and entertainment and pleasure, have all been portrayed, with the fine line between fiction and reality often becoming blurred. Authors referred to range from Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dickens to Colin McInnes, Helene Hanff and Nick Hornby. Venue: The Methodist Church Hall, Chapel Street Ely. Wednesday 13th September 2023, 10:30am12:30pm. Course fee £50. Payment by cheque only. Pre-booking and payment preferred. Contact Anne on 01353 662712 or at awarham575@btinternet.com
