Dear Readers

And so, into the Autumn we go! The magazine has been well supported this month and we have been able to go up in size and reinstate our “Hello Ely” picture pages which is great.

Ely Tennis club tell us all about their Diversity Day on page 32. What a great thing this is! As I am married to a wheelchair user, I find it really lovely that the club give time and energy to being inclusive in this way. If your group has a story of how they are positively impacting the local area then do get in touch as we would love to hear about it.

Congratulations go to The Oliver Cromwell House and Cathedral teams for their “Travelers’ Choice” awards from Trip advisor. We all know Ely is a great place to visit but it’s always nice to have it formally acknowledged by others.

There are some cracking events coming up in the Autumn and lots of opportunities to get involved in local groups and clubs. You’ll see a new and improved events section from page 44.

Thanks to everyone who sends in details. You can email me on the usual address or submit event details directly here: https:// bit.ly/443DKJK and don’t forget the Ely Events Listings Facebook Group which is fast becoming a whats-on hub for the area www.facebook.com/groups/elyeventslistings

And don't forget.... soon be Christmas! :D

What is Inner Wheel ? Inner Wheel is one of the largest women’s service organisations in the world. From its origin in Manchester in 1924, it has 17,000 Members within Great Britain and Ireland and over 100,000 Members from more than 104 countries across the globe.

The Inner Wheel Club of Ely was founded 75 years ago. We support and fund raise for National and International Charities and especially for Local Charities. We recently raised over £1,000 for the local branch of the NSPCC. This is done by holding fund raising events as well as by collecting used stamps, glasses, printer cartridges, mobile phones and much more which can be recycled to raise money. We also produce knitted goods and soft toys many of which are sent overseas. We assist the two Ely Rotary clubs when called upon in particular with Aquafest and Christmas street collections.

Our meetings take place on 4th. Wednesday of the month 7:00 p.m. at The Old Dispensary, St. Mary’s Street, Ely. We have business and Speaker meetings followed by coffee and biscuits but on special dates, President’s Night, Charter Night, Christmas we dine in local hostelries.

Inner Wheel Promotes Friendship and Service.

Come along, make friends and make a difference. If you would like to know more information please contact Joy Hockey 01353663525 or President Pauline Lancaster 01353 663378 email paulinedlancaster@yahoo.com. and we can talk over coffee. Check out our District web site District 8 - Inner Wheel https://www.rotary-ribi.org/template-clubs.php We look forward to meeting you.

ELY AND LITTLEPORT RIOT BORDER MORRIS

The Ely and Littleport Riot is a mixed Morris side based in Ely. We dance our own version of Border Morris, a style of dancing from the counties that border Wales. We do dance a few traditional dances but most of our dances are our own compositions named after local places, Aldreth Mill, Black Bank, Padnal……

The side is named after the bread riots that took place in Ely and Littleport in 1816. A number of men were hanged and more transported to Australia for their part in the riots. There is a memorial on the south side of St Mary’s Church tower in Ely.

We practice from the beginning of September to the end of April and ‘Dance out’ almost every week in May, June and July, sometimes twice, and from time in the Autumn and Winter. These are mainly regular events like March Winter Fair and Whittlesey Straw Bear.

The dance out season starts on 1st May at 5:20am outside Ely Cathedral. In common with many other Morris sides around the country we will be dancing the sun up.

Our regular events include St Neot’s Day of Dance, Eel Day, Whittlesey Straw Bear, Denny Abbey May Open Day and Ely Folk Festival. This year we also danced at Chippenham Folk

Festival. We also dance at local pubs, and provide entertainment at events over the Summer.

We are available for displays at events in the local area and to organisations like the WI, Guides, Beavers, Lunch Clubs, schools etc for whom we can do displays and teaching sessions.

The practice season starts on Friday 1st September. We meet at Centre E in Barton Road, Ely from 8 till 9:30. New dancers and musicians are always welcome so please come and join us.

PETER HARRIS - CHANGING THE LIVES OF THE DUMPSTERS

Well-known, local philanthropist and author, Peter Harris, gave a talk to the Rotary Club of Ely in August. He told of the shock that he felt when he saw, 15 years ago, so many families in Cambodia living in dire circumstances searching rubbish dumps for items to sell and for food and clothes to survive. He was determined to make a difference and has spent up to three months a year working to help 143 children who have been abused and orphaned receive education and break free from their dreadful conditions. The are called 'the Dumpsters'.

Peter has spent much of his time fund raising and to date he has raised over £100k for the Dumpsters in Cambodia, the Phayao Women’s Development Foundation in Thailand and for one of the highest schools in the Himalayas in Bhutan.

For the last 7 years, he has walked the Camino pilgrimage from Sarria to Santiago to raise funds and he hopes his efforts this year from October 6-14th will sponsor 26 impoverished children with a year’s education. His book ‘A Wayward Spirit’ (available on Amazon) was written to raise funds to build a Community Centre for the 60 families

on the rubbish dumps, which is now completed. He is currently writing ‘A Wayward Traveller’ and any money raised will go to charity.

He says that we can all make a difference and ‘walk our talk’. If you would like to help Peter with his work in Cambodia and in Ely, please contact him on pjhely@gmail.com.

Can you live well with dementia?

By 2025, more than one million people in the UK will have dementia. To mark World Alzheimer’s Month this September, we reflect on how to keep positive and well after a dementia diagnosis.

While everyone experiences dementia differently, the right support and focusing on the things you can do and enjoy can help you feel positive and well:

• Stay stimulated. Many care settings provide activities specially designed for residents with dementia. If you are not in care, support groups can provide stimulation, as well as comfort and a sense of community.

• Keep your diet in check. Drinking enough fluid, and eating good mix of vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy and lean protein is a good start.

• Exercise daily. This keeps the blood flowing (which supports cognition) and increases key chemicals that protect the brain. Gardening and house chores all count!

• Monitor your mood. Depression can be common among people living with dementia. Remain social and stimulated, and always speak to a professional if you are worried.

Living with dementia, or supporting someone with it, is a unique journey. The charity Alzheimer’s Society has great resources, and the East Cambridgeshire District Council website lists local activities.

And, if you ever want to explore what care may look like for yourself or someone you love living with dementia, get in touch with us at The Orchards for a no-obligation chat or visit on 01353 885 165.

ELY SINFONIA PLAY RAVEL, GERSHWIN & SAINT-SAENS

Anyone old enough to remember the 1984 winter Olympics (not to mention the countless replays) will never forget Torvill and Dean’s legendary performance to Ravel’s Bolero, when they won the highest ever figure skating score– straight sixes. For anyone else, it has to be one of the most thrilling pieces of music, in which Ravel builds on his mesmerising theme with clever orchestration and an amazing side drum part

After one of the most exciting starts to any concert, we travel to France with Gershwin’s An American in Paris, one of the lushest pieces to come out of the USA in the early twentieth century. Listen out for the sounds of the street, especially the taxi

Finally, we bury ourselves in Saint-Saens’ organ symphony. “You ask for the symphony: you don’t know what you ask,” said the composer. “It will be terrifying . . . ” At the first performance the critics were unsure, but the audience loved the piece and Saint-Saens’ colleague Charles Gounod responded with “There goes the French Beethoven”. Come and decide what you think. A concert for all to enjoy – don’t miss it!

FREE LISTENING DEVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SIGHT LOSS IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE

A WORK EXPERIENCE DAY WITH

LUCY FRAZER M.P.

Lucy Frazer MP welcomed pupils from schools across the county to a work experience day in the Palace of Westminster. The day involved a parliamentary tour, the opportunity to watch a debate in the House of Commons, two workshops and a Q&A with Ms Frazer.

As the cost-of-living crisis puts more people under strain, a leading sight loss charity is encouraging blind and partially sighted people in Cambridgeshire to claim their free specially adapted listening device.

Research shows that people living with sight loss are more likely to be hit harder by the cost-ofliving crisis*. British Wireless for the Blind Fund (BWBF) provides a range of easy-to-use devices for free and for life to blind and partially sighted people across the UK who might otherwise struggle to afford them.

Sophie Jones, for BWBF said: “Radio is a lifeline for people living with sight loss, keeping them in touch with the world, as well as their local community. Sadly, costs and difficulties using ‘off-the-shelf’ devices can mean that people with sight loss sometimes struggle to access the same audio content most of us take for granted. Our equipment is free, easy-to-use independently and everyone who gets a device will have full support setting it up. As the cost-of-living crisis takes a further hold in 2023, we hope that those within the sight loss community will take advantage of this fantastic offer.”

BWBF’s range of devices includes DAB radios, CD players, portable radios, digital radios, Alexa devices and much more.

If you or someone you know is interested in a BWBF audio device, please contact Sophie Jones at sophie@blind.org.uk or phone 01622 754 757. People can also browse BWBF’s full range of devices and apply online at www.blind.org.uk.

Eighteen pupils from across South East Cambridgeshire were hosted at the Palace of Westminster on Tuesday 11 July for a range of work experience activities, designed to teach them all about the work of a Member of Parliament and the functions of the UK Parliament. The schools represented included Ely College, Linton Village College, Impington Village College and Long Road Sixth Form College.

The day began with a tour around the parliamentary estate followed by observing a parliamentary debate from the public gallery in the House of Commons where ministers from the Department of Health and Social Care were responding to questions from fellow MPs.

Ms Frazer’s staff then led two workshop sessions for the pupils: one in how an MP practically assists constituents with their issues, and another in how a Member of Parliament communicates with their constituents via the media and their social media profile. Ms Frazer also answered students' questions about her role and experience as a Member of Parliament. The provision of work experience has become a regular feature in Lucy Frazer’s calendar, having begun in 2015 upon her election. She said, "These work experience days are specially designed to give the pupils an idea of what it is like to be a Member of Parliament or a member of an MP’s staff team. We teach them skills needed for political communication, debating and casework, which are all central to life in Parliament. I hope the pupils enjoyed the day as much as I did!"

Ely Quaker Meeting has been listed in this magazine for quite a while. However, readers might not have noticed our listing, perhaps because you’re not familiar with who Quakers are or what they believe.

least not in what might be called an orthodox sense. And everyone is welcome at our meetings, of all religions and none. Quakers welcome and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and successfully campaigned for the right to marry same-sex couples in our meetings.

Perhaps some might now say of the silence simply that it is beautiful and takes them beyond themselves. What we all share, though, is the belief that all people are connected in Love.

BAT & BARNOWL EVENINGS AT WELNEY

The first Quakers were a radical part of the religious ferment that existed in England in the second quarter of the seventeenth century. They believed that the Inner Light of God lives in everyone and that, meeting together in silence, it was possible to have a deeply meaningful awareness of this light. Sometimes, a member of the meeting would ‘minister’, that is, they would share with the others what such an encounter meant to them. Occasionally, this would cause them to literally ‘quake’.

There was also a strong feeling of kinship between the participants of the meeting, which led to the wider acceptance that all people were equal before God. The absence of hierarchy is still characteristic of Quaker meetings today, as is the implied importance of equality, peace, truth, simplicity, and sustainability, which have become fundamental Quaker principles or ‘testimonies’.

Today, Quakers continue to meet together in silence, opening our hearts to new experiences and insights, and sometimes sharing what we discover. There are, though, one or two significant differences from earlier times. Not all Quakers would now describe themselves as Christian, at

Eight of the 18 UK species of bat have been recorded at Welney Wetland Centre and by using specialist equipment during bat and barn owl evenings we can listen in on the different calls the bats are making. Bat detectors pick up the echolocation used to navigate the skies in their search of prey, and turn it into sound patterns that we can hear. The skies are at their busiest August and September as young bats have taken to the skies, females desert old nursery sites and adults to try find suitable mates before winter. A clear evening out in the Fens means you can enjoy seeing the silhouettes of the bats flying as well as listening to their calls.

Owls are the classic bird of the night, and we are fortunate in the Fens to have the beautiful barn owl as a resident species. Experiencing these ghostly forms swoop by is incredibly special and no wonder that they are one of the UK’s most popular birds.

“These evening events are a fantastic way to start exploring for night-time wildlife with guides on hand to help point out the sights and sounds of these incredible creatures.

There are just a few spaces remaining on the bat & barn owl evening on Sat 16th September. Booking is essential through the website, £15 per adult, £7 per child. Find out more: wwt.org.uk/welney

ELY TENNIS CLUB: INCLUSION AND DIVERSITY UPDATE

Ely Tennis Club’s Inclusion and Diversity Team has been busy over the past few months, continuing to open up tennis to an ever-widening group of people. From a stall at Ely Pride where a personal highlight was seeing a unicorn sign up to a session of walking tennis, to a fabulous Diversity Day at Ely Tennis Club courts, more and more people are being welcomed into the tennis community.

Ely Tennis Club was formed in 1989 and is proud to be a community based not-for-profit organisation, with its home at the EOSA complex at Ely Leisure Village. New members are always welcome, please contact elytennisclub@hotmail. com or visit the Facebook page at www.facebook. com/elytennisclubuk if you are interested in having a chat, organising a tour of the facilities, or just coming along to play tennis!

Diversity Day, run in partnership with Ability

Plus and Living Sport, saw a variety of inclusive activities: Visually Impaired (VI) tennis – complete with blindfolds and audible jingly balls – featured on court 4, whilst a highly competitive walking tennis game was set up on court 3. There was a wide variety of specialist equipment to try out –thanks to several groups (Thomas Parsons; Bright Ideas for Tennis; Cambs LTA) – which we have successfully introduced in our Special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) sessions, both at Highfield Academy Ely and St Mary’s Ely.

Walking Tennis sessions have gone from strength to strength; during the past few months we have held the inaugural Walking Tennis Wimbledon Trophy – won by Pam; and have set up a GoFundMe with the aim of raising money for specialist sports wheelchairs. The group collectively set out to walk the distance to Wimbledon – and with the aid of several canine companions and the occasional mobility aid, managed to walk there and back! And we were delighted that our Inclusion and Diversity leads, Emma Thomas and Fiona Dyer, are both finalists at this year’s Ely Heroes Awards!

The club is determined to make tennis available, and enjoyable, for all within reach of Ely, no matter what their abilities and disabilities. The club holds weekly sessions of Walking Tennis at The Hive sports centre in Ely and is preparing to hold weekly outreach sessions for pupils at Highfield School.

ELY WILDSPACE

Overnight rain followed by a glorious sunny morning on 4th August provided the perfect conditions for observing pollinators at the wildflower meadow on Ely Common. Patches of marjoram and vetches were swarming with bees, wasps, flies, beetles and bugs. Hornet Hoverflies, one of the UK’s largest and most spectacular flies and a convincing Hornet mimic, were cruising over the meadow. Hundreds of Honeybees were on the marjoram.

Suddenly, a large wasp (see photo) flew over the marjoram and settled to watch the Honeybees.

This was the Bee Wolf, a wasp that hunts only Honeybees. After some near misses, the “wolf” grabbed one and dropped to the ground with it, where it was paralysed using several precisely aimed stings. The victim was then carried off to the wasp’s burrow to provide live prey for its carnivorous offspring. This is the first time that Bee Wolf has been seen in Ely – an exciting prospect to have such a charismatic insect on our doorstep. July and August are the best months to see Bee Wolf.

Recent scientific research has shown that overstocking the landscape with Honeybee hives can negatively impact populations of our native wild bees, many of which are very efficient pollinators of a wide variety of fruits, oilseed crops and vegetables. The Honeybee, a highly social species, is very effective in communicating sources of nectar and pollen to hive-mates, leading to it outcompeting non-social (“solitary”) wild bees for these resources. Perhaps it is time to review our relationship with the Honeybee.

Since 1995, the Kingfishers Bridge Wetland Creation Project has used pioneering conservation techniques and outcome-based management to recreate a variety of wetland habitats. As the nature reserve has matured it has helped to safeguard some of the Fen’s most endangered species. Situated just north of the A1123 between Stretham and Wicken, the Nature Reserve sits right on the edge of the black peat soils stretching north to Ely and is bordered by the River Cam to the West.

Kingfishers Bridge takes a different approach to wildlife management, believing it is not enough for wildlife to just recreate the look of a lost habitat, so many of the natural processes like large grazing animals and flooding rivers have been lost. Large grazing animals have been returned to many conservation sites as the way they graze creates more variety and biodiversity, however they rarely behave naturally due to a lack of large predators.

At Kingfishers Bridge the management tries to replicate as many of these lost processes as possible, for example the grazing herds of Asian Water buffalo and Konik ponies do the work of Europe’s extinct ancient grazers; the Aurochs, giant cattle weighing up to 1,500kg and the Tarpan, very similar in appearance and behaviour to the domestic Konik.

Since the 2020 Covid-19 Lockdown, Kingfishers Bridge has had a significant increase in visitor numbers; from 2,000 visitors a year to closer to 22,000. In response to this increase we have extended our parking area and Visitor’s Centre, and opened The Wren Café that welcomes visitors every weekend with barista hot drinks, paninis, homemade cakes and treats and plenty moremaking the site a fantastic day out for families with picnic spots all along the riverbank and a clear view of Ely Cathedral from the Viewing Mound.

It has been a busy but profitable summer for the Ely and District NSPCC Group. We are very fortunate to have been named as The Mayor, Councillor Chris Philips’ charity of his year in office. We will be holding two events with him and the first is a Quiz and fish and chip supper at St Mary’s Church Hall on September 29th. To order tickets please phone 07912617135 or look for poster QR codes around the City.

In June we celebrated National Childhood Day at the kind invitation of Jubilee Gardens and received donations of £184 by providing old-fashioned games for children.

Again in June we were helped to raise over £750 at Le Spice restaurant on Fore Hill in the City. This was down to the generosity of the owner, Amin, and his staff. The evening was also lucky to have the quizmaster, Steuart, giving his time at an ever popular Quiz evening.

The Methodist Church Hall on Chapel Street is the venue to host a Coffee Morning in aid of NSPCC on October 14th from 10-12. There will be a Bric a Brac, cakes and preserves stalls and refreshments to raise money for NSPCC. Come and meet the team.

Looking to later in the year we are holding again two Christmas Wreath Making Workshops on November 25th here in Ely. To reserve, as places are limited, call 07470 507790. In response to request for a Christmas Floral Table Decoration Workshop we will be taking bookings on the same phone number for December 2nd. More details to follow.

All the money raised goes to assist the national NSPCC charity to provide support and resources to protect children and young people and prevent abuse by giving a place to turn to and a voice to listen.

For more information contact NSPCC.org.uk. and on local events please ring Johanna on 07912617135.

The Annual Summer Supper in the gardens of Michael and Wendy Powell saw the committee and some happy young volunteers serving a three course meal to over fifty people. We were entertained by Mr Ukulele Man, Chris Dodson and raised £1,632. Plans are in place again for the next Summer Supper in 2024.

Piano tuition for all ages, with a friendly and professional approach.

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update

OUT AND ABOUT WITH CITY OF ELY COUNCIL!

As we move into Autumn, it may feel like summer is already behind us but 2023 has delivered some fantastic community events in Ely and we have been delighted to support many of them as a council:

ARMED FORCES DAY

On the 24th June, the Mayor, Cllr Chris Phillips presented Ely’s army and air cadets with the Freedom of the City during an event outside the Cathedral on Armed Forces Day.

Cllr Phillips said: “The certificates state just why this Freedom has been bestowed: ‘For the long and valuable service the Corps and Cadet Force has rendered to the young people of Ely and district and their contribution to civic life. The council recognises the dedication of all the officers, cadets and supporters and the value that the training, discipline and citizenship skills instilled give to the wider community and the nation’.”

The City of Ely Council also signed the Armed Forces Covenant in April - a pledge that those who serve, or have served in the armed forces, and their families, will be treated with fairness and respect by the community.

ELY PRIDE

Jubilee Gardens was decked in rainbows for Ely Pride on the 29th July. Councillors ran a stall in the Maltings to share information about council activities and national LGBTQ+ support services who weren’t otherwise present.

The day was a truly inclusive event and incredibly family friendly with all the generations coming together. The colouring-in flags we made were popular with the youngest visitors especially!

The Mayor, Cllr Chris Phillips, addressed the gathered crowds and underlined the importance of events like Pride for continuing to make progress on LGBTQ+ rights and acceptance, and ensuring that Ely is a city were everyone is free and safe to be themselves.

ELY CATHEDRAL GREEN FAIR

Ely Cathedral’s Green Fair took place on Saturday 5 August on the greens outside. Following the cancellation of the previous year’s event with the death of her late Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, exhibitors, including City of Ely Council, were excited to be going ahead with this year’s event.

Storm Antonio had different ideas bringing climate-crisis prompted extreme weather - the day was wet and cold. But this didn’t put off intrepid supporters who came along to visit the stalls, nonetheless!

City of Ely Council shared a stall with East Cambs Climate Action Network, a advocacy group we work in partnership with. Cllr Laura Fox and Cllr Pip Gardner designed activities for children to take part in - the reward of the stickers being popular with everyone! The event served as an excellent networking event for Councillors on the Climate and Environment Committee and we took reports from residents about issues that were troubling them. It was a thoroughly worthwhile event, though we hope for less challenging weather next year!

SKATE PARK

Following some vandalism earlier in the summer, the City of Ely Council Estates Team worked hard in the heat of late June and early July to get the park back into working order. The teams skills and creative thinking enabled us to bring the ramp back into a safe and usable condition – saving potentially thousands of pounds of additional expenditure that fully replacing the structure would of cost! Now the park is back open for skaters of all ages to enjoy!

THE VISIT ELY APP PUTS THE CITY OF ELY IN THE GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT

From opening times and contact information to directions using the Map app on an individual’s handset, there is no longer any fear that people can miss something in this city.

Why not discover Ely Museum and their incredible collection dating from Anglo-Saxon to date, before exploring Ely Markets and then finishing the day at Ely Riverside, exploring the gallery, antiques and more. With all public facilities now listed, there need no longer be any concern around finding the nearest public convenience, bus stop or car park. Everything is there for you at the touch of a fingertip.

Another function is our city events, which are all listed on the app including locations. You can even set a reminder on your phone to make sure you don’t miss anything. With planned additional functionality already on course, including businesses being able to offer promotions directly within the mobile app and audio tours and treasure hunts, this ever-growing app will become an invaluable tool for residents and visitors in and around Ely. The app will also be regularly updated so that new businesses and upcoming events are accessible.

Anna Bennett, Tourism and Town Centre Manager comments ‘we are overjoyed with our award winning app, and this truly allows our visitors from all over the world access to our fantastic city, and all we have to offer. I would also like to personally thank all those involved, which includes the team here at Visit Ely, Calvium Ltd and East Cambs District Council comms team. “The Little Chapel in the Fen”

TWO LOCAL ARTISTS TO SHOW THEIR WORK IN ELY CATHEDRAL

Two local artists, Jackie Day and Karen West will be showing their work in the Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral from 29th Sept to 13th October 2023. Both are members of Iceni Botanical Artists who are delighted to be having an exhibition in the Lady Chapel for the first time. The theme for the exhibition is “Herbals and Harvest” helping celebrate the life of Queen Etheldreda along with the Cathedral’s Harvest Festival and the recently planted Physic Garden.

Jackie has lived in Little Downham since 1970 and has always been interested in art. She particularly enjoys drawing in graphite and pen, plus watercolours on vellum – a material used for many botanical and ecclesiastical pictures. Only one workshop in the country survives producing vellum, who use traditional methods to specially treat the hides.

Karen, from Sutton, attended Goldsmiths Art College to study textiles and fine art. Her love of botanical art started at an exhibition at the Botanical Gardens, Sydney. She is particularly inspired by the work of Marianne North, Rory McEwen and Pandora Sellers.

Iceni Botanical Artists, formed in 2010, are also offering tasters in botanical art alongside the exhibition in the Lady Chapel with two workshop days for those wishing to have a go, or for those more experienced to further develop their skills.

Ely Lifelong Learners

Offer a Ten Week Course on London Through Literature

Tutor: Ros Connelly

London is a fictional place – one of the most written about places in literature. What we think about London has often been created by the imagination of writers. This course will discusss ways in which writers have used real places and re-created them for their own ends, giving us a deeper, richer and multi-layered understanding of London. The course will be thematic rather than chronological (although covering several centuries of writing), looking at the importance of pre-conceived ideas and first impressions, and how work, the legal profession, crime and punishment, and entertainment and pleasure have all been portrayed, with the line between fiction and reality often becoming blurred. Authors referred to range from Chaucer, Shakespeare and Dickens to Colin McInnes, Helene Hanff and Nick Hornby.

• Venue: The Methodist Church Hall, Chapel Street, Ely
