WELCOME ...from the Editor

Welcome to the July/August issue of the Elyi. We won’t be producing a separate magazine for August so Team Elyi can enjoy a well earned summer break. And so it seems an appropriate time to mention the 15 Ely and 4 village-based distributors who make sure all 10,500 copies get through the right letterboxes and also onto shop counters and waiting rooms. Thank you for all your hard work!

EDITORIAL & DESIGN Editor Bridget Hickish 01353 662684 editor@elyimagazine.com

It’s also the Magazine’s 2nd birthday. Madeleine and I would like to thank you too for reading, sending in your info and for the many positive comments we receive throughout the year. We will be on the Market Place on 6th July with many other independent business owners as part of the annual Ely Independents Day so please do come and say hello if you are in town.

Ian Lindsay, Mayor of Ely Since the Mayor Making event on the 16th of May the pace of life in the Lindsay household has moved up a gear. Two days later we were guests at St Ives for their version of the same ceremony. It was on much the same lines as ours, but the outgoing Mayor produced a variation on the theme. He had been weighed at the beginning of his mayoral year and at the end of it. He had taken this idea from an annual tradition associated uniquely with the Mayor and Corporation of High Wycombe. There, the weighing process is recorded at the start of the mayoral year and the result compared to the weight at the end of the year. For each of the Mayor and corporation, if there has been a weight gain in that year, the person is considered to have been gaining that weight at the taxpayers’ expense. Historically they would be jeered and booed, and be accompanied with thrown tomatoes and rotten fruit. Fortunately for him, but sadly for the onlookers, the Mayor of St Ives was of slender build and had not gained any weight in the year. If I am going to emulate his achievement I shall have to up the ante on the tennis courts. As yet, I haven’t mentioned it to my fellow councilors. Other events followed, as over the first weekend in June we enjoyed a particular privilege as we were able to attend the celebration of 60 years twinning with Ribe in Denmark. A group of 20 from the Ely Ribe Twinning Association took part (at their own expense). Some of our members have been visiting Ribe since the 1970s, and we were able to view an oak tree that they had planted on a visit in 1975. Unlike the Mayor of St. Ives, it had grown magnificently in the interim. Ribe also hosted groups from their twin towns

in France and Germany, though these had only been associated with the town for 25 years. There were civic ceremonies and a Cathedral service to attend, along with visits to the local beauty spots, and much mangling of 4 European languages in the process. We left them with a small presentation from Ely as a whole. It was a replica of a lion’s head taken from a choir stall in our cathedral. at the Alconbury Graduation

Ribe

Finally I got to wear the full regalia for the first time at a graduation ceremony for the Class of 2016 from Alconbury High School. The weather was perfect, the setting in the Cathedral was unforgettable, and I’ve never been so photographed in my life. But, of course, life as Mayor is not all pomp and circumstance. The round of committee meetings, individual meetings, local events, interacting with our staff, keeping in contact with parishioners and the extended family continues apace. But it’s interesting and mostly fun, and if things seem too much I can always go and smack a few balls around the real tennis court.

Cllr. Ian Lindsay

Complete Kitchens Ely Renovating your kitchen can be as stressful an experience as it is satisfying. One local company, however, makes the whole process as simple and effective as possible – You can choose from door styles like, modern gloss or matt, handleless, shaker and traditional style kitchens with a large selection of doors and colours to view in their showroom. Or if you really want something more bespoke they offer a colour match service on a selection of their ranges. They will then create your dream design, using their photo realistic 3D design software, so you can truly bring to life what your dream kitchen will look like. Complete Kitchens Ely has been wowing local customers since it opened for business in 2014, having completed in excess of 90 projects in and around the Ely area. Just a couple of examples below of what their customers have said:

“From start to finish the service received from Paul and his team, superbly led by his team of contractors, was exceptional. Loved the design from the start and the project took just the 2 weeks quoted. Everyone turned up on time every day and just got on with it. We love our totally new look kitchen. Thank you” If you’d like a preliminary chat with Paul or one of his team, or to get some inspiration about options for your own kitchen, then just give them a call on (01353) 860879. Or, if you prefer, they can come to you for your free home measure and design consultation.

“Complete Kitchens, what can I say.... Paul from start to finish you have all been amazing, as soon as we saw your design we knew that we had to have that kitchen! However we didn’t expect to ever love the kitchen as much as we do, it’s perfect and we are so very thankful to yourself and your wonderful team, so a huge thank you to you all at Complete kitchens Ely for all your hard work!! We now have our perfect kitchen that makes us smile every day”

To come and take a look at their full range, visit the showroom at Black Bank Business Centre, Black Bank Road, Little Downham, Ely, CB6 2UA; open Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm or by appointment at all other times.

Fenland Poetry East Anglia’s new literary magazine, The Fenland Reed, is advertising a host of poetry opportunities this summer: Words on Water: Workshop and Reading We’re running a day of poetry at Welney Wetland Centre as part of OuseFest 2016 including an afternoon workshop led by the editors, and an evening reading with Mary Livingstone (current Fenland Poet Laureate), Poppy Kleiser (Fenland Poet Laureate 2014) and Clare Best. Both the workshop and reading are free to attend and you can book now by emailing: jonathan.totman@gmail.com Details online at www.thefenlandreed.co.uk. Poetry Competition We’re also inviting submissions for a unique Poetry Competition. Running as part of OuseFest 2016, we’re looking for poems responding the landscape and wildlife of the Ouse Washes, an area at the heart of the Cambridgeshire and Norfolk fens. The competition is open to anyone (whether local to the area or not), and we are teaming up with the Ouse Washes Landscape Partnership to provide you with some inspiration… We’d like you to take as your starting point any one of the shortlisted photographs in this year’s Elyi Magazine | July/Aug 2016

‘Snap the Ouse’ Competition. We’re looking for poems that draw inspiration from these pictures but which also depart from them and stand on their own. You have eight brilliant photos to choose from, which you can view on the OWLP website. The competition is free to enter and will be judged by acclaimed poet Clare Best. There are three prizes up for grabs in the form of book tokens worth £100 (first prize), £50 (second prize) and £25 (third prize). Winning entries will also be published in the autumn issue of The Fenland Reed. The deadline is Friday 12th August – so check out those photos and get scribbling! For more information and details of how to submit, please see the full competition guidelines on The Fenland Reed website: www. thefenlandreed.co.uk. Submissions Finally, we’re currently open for submissions for poetry and short stories on any theme for our autumn issue until 31st July. Youth Ely Hub

s t du Fin arke M Ely July n O 16th

Sarah Odonnell tells us about the Ely Youth Hub which provides a valuable service for the young people of Ely on Mon-Wed evenings. As with many areas, there was nowhere in Ely for young people to meet up with their friends and just hang out. So, with the help of council members, a charity was formed and a building was found. The result was Youth Ely Hub at Centre E and in December 2015 we officially opened for the youth of the area. None of this would be possible if not for the continued support of the volunteers that take time to help out every week, and the community that have donated some wonderful items. With the help of donations and grant funding we have been able to provide Table Football, Basketball, music, TV, PS3, board games, Pool Table, laptops, tuck shop, weekly activities and much more. We even have a fully functional training kitchen to provide special cooking evenings. We only charge 50p entry for all youths that attend and the money received goes back into the Hub coffers to provide things that the children tell me they want. We are also hoping to arrange our first annual trip in the summer which will be to Wicksteed Park. We have also been given additional funding from ADEC to provide Arts based activities; current ideas include t-shirt printing, street art and even a School of Rock. A market stall is being held at Ely Market on 16th July to raise further funds and promote the Project, donations welcome.

Ely My Shop is Local The Shopping Website for Ely! Ivar and Martina Jenssen have opened a new service for Ely and surrounding villages. Ely.myshopislocal.co.uk is a website featuring Ely’s independent shops “under one roof” on one online shopping site.

many different local shops and so help keep the lovely city centre we all enjoy. The big bonus of course is the single delivery fee, no matter how many different shops you order from. There are thousands of residents who are unable to visit the shops during their opening hours as they are either at work, without transport, unwell etc. For them, shopping locally was out of reach. Not anymore!

Meeting up with Martina, we ask why?

“We have lived here for 10 years and we love everything about Ely. Unfortunately, we see small shops disappearing as life on the high street is tough. We want to see more independent shops opening and our city thriving. As online shopping has boomed, small shops without online presence are left behind. Having a website is costly and time consuming. Very few small retailers can find the time to manage a website in addition to running their shops.”

You can support local retailers by using our website: ely.myshopislocal.co.uk It’s really easy, you just choose products from a variety of independent local shops and pay for just one order. Once you pick what you want, ingredients for dinner or BBQ party, present for a relative, sweets for the kids etc., you can have your order delivered on the same day or collect it for free on the high street in the evening.

Ivar and Martina’s ingenious solution is to get the independent shops online in one place which offers local residents an opportunity to support

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

www.elyimagazine.com

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Jazz at the Cutter The third generation of a mini musical dynasty, Melody Brooker follows in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, performing throughout the region with her own acclaimed jazz trio. For as long as she can remember, music has been part of Melody’s life. Some of her earliest memories are of watching her dad and grandad performing together. Having performed in various function bands over the past two decades, this is her first daughter/dad collaboration and so far, so harmonious! The trio consists of Paul White (a.k.a Dad) on keys, John Trowsdale on double bass and Colin Borrell on guitar. Each member of the band brings a wealth of musical experience to the group and collaborates to

write unique arrangements to wellknown classics from The American Song Book and more contemporary numbers from artists such as Carole King, The Carpenters, Norah Jones and Amy Winehouse. The result is a varied repertoire of toe-tapping swing and soft ballads which tug at the heart strings. Mum of two small children, Melody is now working on bringing up the fourth musical generation and has been ‘educating’ her little ones with jazz since birth. She is proud to report that both James (aged 4) and Dorothy (2) can already identify the voice of Ella Fitzgerald - it’s a good start! You can see the Melody Brooker Trio in action at The Cutter Inn, Ely on the third Sunday in every month from 7.30pm. The band are also available for private bookings – contact melody@livethecity.com

The Ousewashes Rotary Ride A Rotary Cycling Event for Prostate Cancer 31st July 2016 Rotary Clubs across the Fenland area of East Anglia will be out in force on Sunday July 31st 2016. As part of the annual Ouse Washes Festival and building on success over the past couple of years, the event ‘Ouse and Washes Rotary Charity Cycle Ride’ is being organized by the Rotary eClub of East Anglia.

Keen cyclist and member of the Chatteris Cycling Club, Andrew White said, “I’ve completed the ‘Tiger’ route twice now. It’s a great route and I’m loving it. It’s a great way to enjoy a cycle ride and do it for a good cause at the same time” Starting in the outstanding Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Welney, PE14 9TN, cyclists and supporters of Prostate Cancer UK are invited to take part. Those interested can register on line at Eventbrite - bit.ly/OWRotaryRideReg or through the British Cycling website bit.ly/BritishCycingReg

The Rotary eClub of East Anglia is a fully chartered Rotary Club that, unlike a land based club, meet online on a Wednesday evening at 19:30 hrs using a webinar based system called Zoom. This enables video meetings to be held in the same way as a traditional Rotary Club. It's ideal for busy people on the move who wish to get involved with Rotary who physically don't have the time. All are welcome to join a meeting at https://zoom.us/j/470985565

The project is part of a nationwide Rotary Ride in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, which is being undertaken during June & July.

Participants can also turn up on the day and register, there is a £5 / person surcharge. Registration fees are £15 for individuals, £25 for families (2 adults + 3 children over 9), and £50 for teams of 4. There is a £2.00 Personal Insurance payable at check-in that is a condition for every participant. There will be a prize draw for all who pre-register. For more information, go to our website: www.ousewashesrotaryride.org.uk

Last year, nationally the Rotary Ride raised over £100,000 for this deserving cause. Participating Rotary Clubs are optimistic that the cycle ride this year will make a valuable contribution well surpassing last year’s figure. Participants are being encouraged to raise sponsorship for their efforts as they have done in previous years. With the Ouse Washes Rotary Ride there are three alternative routes which have been designed to offer a broad appeal to families and cycling clubs, with cyclists of all ages and abilities being away from main roads where possible. These will take cyclists through some remarkable landscapes of countryside, rivers, and water-ways that crisscross the extraordinary region of Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The participating studios are spread throughout the whole region, not just in the city centre, and there will be a wonderful variety of talent on show, with some artists collaborating to share their exhibition space on their chosen dates. As usual, the distinctive yellow COS flags will be out to identify participating studios.

piano playing. Melvyn accompanied with real empathy and in the Chopin particularly, his fantastic flair and virtuosic agility were unforgettable.

Guy Johnston ( ‘cello) and Melvyn Tan (piano) in Ely Cathedral on Saturday 11th June 2016. After the inaugural event of the Isle of Ely Arts Festival this year: a workshop with budding young cellists, these highly talented musicians gave a splendid concert in Ely Cathedral.

This was an excellent concert, giving the Isle of Ely Arts Festival a tremendous start.

The programme was varied but the performance was constant: a performance that can only be described as outstanding. Their phenomenal technique was immediately apparent as they demonstrated a wide range of sound and touch. Guy produced some of the most musical and precise sounds I have heard from a ‘cello. His prowess was exemplified by agility and clarity in the Bach, amazingly powerful and well balanced double-stopping in the Turnage, sheer beauty and sonority in the Mendelssohn, notable intensity and sensitivity in the Schubert, potent bowing in the Chopin and very moving expression in the Fauré. His talent was well matched by Melvyn Tan’s www.elyimagazine.com

Coming up… Ely Amateur Dramatic Society 28th- 30th July This month, Shakespearean comedy romance comes to Ely! Much Ado About Nothing is a funny, quick-witted and accessible play and is one of Shakespeare’s most popular comedies. Ely Amateur Dramatic Society will be bringing this classic play to Ely College on Thursday 28th July, Friday 29th July and Saturday 30th July.

countless offstage crew working on this, and it is a combination of all their hard work, laughter, sheer joy and - even though we are all amateurs - a real professionalism that is helping me piece together this enormous jigsaw puzzle of a production.” Shows start at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 from the box office, Burrows Bookshop 01353 669759, or online at £9.95 (which includes a booking fee) from www.ticketsource.co.uk/elyamateurdramaticsociety

Director, Sue Harrison, tells us why you can’t miss this show: “Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare’s most popular and accessible comedies and is very modern in its portrayal of the central romance between the two main characters of Beatrice and Benedick. We’re transporting their combative, quick-witted, will they/won’t they love story to the present day setting of a small seaside village on an idyllic Greek Island, where the sun always shines, the Taverna is always open, and everyone is in the mood to make mischief-not always in a good way.

Don’t miss it! Matt Harvey Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre

The idea of bringing the story to this setting is drawn a little from the movie Mamma Mia - it struck me that the Meryl Streep/Pierce Brosnan relationship in that movie is very Beatrice and Benedick! There may even be just a little ABBA music… In the year of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, we’ll be celebrating his magic by staying true to his original text, but I think our modern interpretation will highlight just how well the Bard’s wit and wisdom has travelled through time. Everyone at Ely ADS is working really hard to bring this production together. There are more than 20 actors, half a dozen singers, and www.elyimagazine.com

Ely Watercolour Workshop The Ely Watercolour Workshop is an informal group of aspiring, (or sometimes, perspiring), artists, of varying levels, who get together, weekly, on a Tuesday evening, at Ely Community College. The evenings run, officially, from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm but members may come and go as time or commitments allow. There is no formal tuition, but the members do try to help each other and will, occasionally, do demonstrations of various aspects of watercolour painting. A programme of ‘topics’, for each week, is produced, for each term, although the subjects are not mandatory. Members are free to ‘do their own thing’, if they so wish, but are invited to participate in the programme, as much as possible. In the summer term and holiday period, the EWW tries to encourage ‘outdoor’ painting with a selection of suggested venues, in and around Ely. We do, occasionally, arrange an all day workshop with an outside ‘professional’ artist, for extra tuition and experience. Each year, the EWW arranges TWO exhibitions of paintings, together with the ever popular hand painted greetings cards. One at Easter and one in October school half-term holidays. The usual venue is the Almonry restaurant, off the Market Square, in central Ely. The fees are £20, per halfyear, payable at the first meeting in January, and first meeting in September. COMMUNITY, EVENTS, BUSINESS & MORE

You and Usain Bolt have so much in common! Kevin Hurley of Hurley Fitbess explains why. As I write, the main topic of conversation in the media is the Referendum but before long it will be replaced by Olympic hype reaching fever pitch. I’m sure, like me, you’re looking forward to savouring the emotion of the world’s biggest sporting carnival! We’ve waited four long years to witness the unmissable spectacle of the planet’s elite athletes going head to head in Brazil. It’s almost mind boggling isn’t it? All that hard work rests on just one single event. Some only lasting seconds!! I wonder if there are lessons us mere mortals could learn from the pinnacles of fitness? Very much so in my humble opinion. You see, your fitness goals and ambitions may not be to break a world record - but they can be just as daunting I’m sure. You know, looking at the big picture, the end goal, shedding a couple of stones, getting into an old dress, getting beach ready, wanting to feel great at a certain age milestone, and so on and so on... It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and give up, deciding that it’s just not possible! But let’s take a leaf from Usain Bolt et al. I guarantee he focuses on daily improvement. Becoming better every single day. Running just that little bit faster. Staying focused. Days become weeks, weeks becomes months and before you know it, he’s lifting gold on the podium (probably!).

Of course, he’ll always have Brazil in mind. But his secret will be small, gradual improvements upon yesterday. That’s the plan. In my experience, that’ll bring you gold too. Decide what your goal is. Break it into tiny, achievable, daily tasks. Bring small successes every day, build momentum and before you know it …. You’re there! For example, have a quality breakfast every day. Once that’s become a habit, focus on great lunches. Then pick another tiny goal and another. All simple stuff!

Find Kevin on Facebook @Hurley Fitness to read great client reviews and more. Kevin is a fantastic trainer! I’ve just completed his 8 week bodyrevise programme and I’ve lost a stone in weight and 4.5inches off my waist. But more than that, I’ve gained massive amounts of confidence, learnt a new skill and had great craic doing it. Kevin is not a typical trainer who treats training as a job, he really invests his time and energy into getting you what you want both physically and mentally. This is not a 9-5 job for him! His focus is not on getting fast results so that he can just promote his business, he genuinely aims to help his clients make sustainable changes to their diet and exercise routines so that they can achieve lasting results! www.elyimagazine.com

But before long you’ll have built an impressive arsenal, able to take on any challenge. You and Usain Bolt have much in common. Who would’ve thought? To find out more about how Kevin can help you achieve your fitness goals contact 07912 845602 kevinhurleyfitness@gmail.com http://www.hurleyfitness.co.uk/ 53
