WELCOME ...from the Editor How can it be June? Half way through the year already. Where does the time go? Oh dear, Bridget has a bad case of the clichés…hehe. It must be the heat, ha!....chance would be a fine thing! I think actually that it is excitement at the fast approaching summer season in Ely. There is just so much going on, a good deal of which is beautifully brought together in the Isle of Ely Music Festival Programme. I hope you have your copy? They are widely available throughout the city. If you would like some edited highlights have a look at page 24.

EDITORIAL & DESIGN Editor Bridget Hickish 01353 662684 editor@elyimagazine.com

On page 26 we feature the ERRC poster competition to raise and maintain awareness of the continuing crisis, tying in with National Refugee Week 20th – 26th June.

Due to popular demand we are featuring more events at the major venues in Ely. Thank you to Ely Museum, The Cathedral and Babylon Arts for sending details in. We hope to extend this to other groups in the July issue. Initially this is for the summer months but if people find it useful we will continue. We aim to please!

CONTRIBUTORS Arts Theatre Matt Harvey

Of course, the fun doesn’t stop in June and as we go into July we have the Ely Folk Festival and Ousefest taking over the momentum. There will be only one issue of this magazine for July and August so that team Elyi can have a well earned rest. Do keep on sending in your info, suggestions and comments. You can engage with us on social media or drop us an email.

Ian Lindsay, Mayor Elect of Ely We had our 42nd Annual Meeting and Mayor Making ceremony on 16th May, so I am now officially the Right Worshipful the Mayor of the City of Ely, and my wife, Suzanne is the Mayoress.

city status by the Monarch, and is one of 8 in the country. Despite the title, as a parish council it is the lowest of the three tiers of local government and has limited powers. Its 15 members are elected every 4 years, and the Mayor acts as the Chairman of the Council. The Mayor has no special powers over their fellow councilors, but he or she does receive a modest annual allowance. They act as a visible representative for their community at civil and ceremonial events and are advocates for the communities that they serve. Parish councils throughout the United Kingdom help on a number of local issues, like providing: allotments, public clocks, bus shelters, community centres, play areas and play equipment, cemeteries, grants to help local organisations, consultation on neighbourhood planning, and environmental issues such as litter, graffiti, fly posting and dog offences. They have powers to provide some facilities themselves, or they can contribute towards their provision by others.

The City Council held this event at the Maltings in the presence of around 100 guests, and after holding a formal vote in accordance with the Local Government Act of 1972 I was elected as Chairman of the City Council and Mayor.

The advent of localism is adding to the responsibilities and powers of this level of local government. Though our powers are modest, and our responsibilities are mundane, my aim will be simply to use our powers and influence to best advantage. I want to realise The City of Ely Council’s vision for Ely, which is for it to be a successful, vibrant, attractive place, where people want to live, work and visit.

Cllr Lis Every, as the retiring Mayor, handed on the gown and chain of office to me. I read and signed the Declaration of Office and swore the Oath of Allegiance. We then repeated the process to confirm Cllr Richard Hobbs as the Deputy Mayor. So what am I taking on? Ely’s Council is unusual in that it is a parish council that has been granted

A Bespoke Service for your Home from Soham Carpets & Soft Furnishings Ltd. Soham Carpets & Soft Furnishings Ltd. was founded in 1977 by Robert Barnes and his wife Lisa. The business was operated from their premises in Soham where, along with a small dedicated team, Robert & Lisa built a strong reputation for supplying quality carpets, beds and soft furnishings. The business continued successfully from there for 25 years, after which Robert & Lisa decided to re-locate to Ely. They firmly believed that good quality products and excellent customer service were the key to their success and their business ethos “Large enough to cope, small enough to care “ has remained the cornerstone and characteristic trademark of Soham Carpets & Soft Furnishings. Robert continues to run the business from his home in Ely, aided by his associate Sue Cornwell who brings her exceptional flare for interior design to the business. The team have a real heart for their community too and, you can tell, they enjoy meeting new customers and helping them find just what they are looking for at affordable prices. As well as traditional carpeting, Robert can supply you with Karndean, laminates and vinyl.

You can research and plan your flooring from the comfort of your own home When you ask Robert’s customers why they keep coming back, it’s the personalised service that stands out. He is happy to give you the benefit of his long time in the business and advise on choices and cost effective solutions. The measuring and quotations service is given free of charge and you know that everything through from ordering to delivery, to the final fitting will have his personal attention - added to which your consultation enables you to view product samples in the comfort of your own home. To contact Robert or Sue at Soham Carpets & Soft Furnishings please email sohamcarpets@yahoo.co.uk. or telephone: 01353 669880

If you go on their website you can see the extensive collection of products. You can also research and plan your flooring from the comfort of your own home and then take advantage of the free delivery service to you from a local retailer. Of course they are also very happy to quote for installation should you require it. For curtains there is an extensive range of fabric samples for you to view, from some of the top British suppliers and the small team of skilled seamstresses will ensure your final product is beautifully made. Ely Vikings Korfball Ely Vikings are a thriving club with four senior teams in the Cambridgeshire Korfball League.

It is a great game for families, and a wonderful opportunity for parents to play competitively with their children. We meet each Monday evening at the gym at Ely College - 6pm (juniors aged 7-13, for one hour) and 7pm (seniors, for two hours.) No previous experience is required - just turn up and enjoy your first free session.

Last year our first team won the overall championship for the first time in our ten-year history. As well as seniors there is a growing junior section which plays regular tournaments. Nine Vikings players have gone on to represent England at international level. But what is korfball ? It is a game which requires basic skills of catching, passing, and playing in a team. It is a very simple game in which you have to get a ball into a basket – but the tactics and advanced skills are subtle. It is a game in which teams of eight have to be split four boys, four girls. Boys mark boys, and girls mark girls. It is a game in which you get to play in defence and attack several times in each match. And it is game which is attracting those of all ages – from 13 to 65+ in our current senior squads.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

www.elyimagazine.com

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Lisa’s Fund Sat 11th June The Maltings Ship Lane Lisa’s fund in association with the Maltings Ely are pleased to announce a fundraising event for The Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. The AC Motown show consists of seven of the countries most talented Motown performers who will be live on stage at the Maltings on Saturday 11th June. ‘I am looking forward to this very much’ said Robert Barnes who launched Lisa’s fund shortly after his wife, Lisa passed away in September 2010. ‘My original aim of raising £100,000 for The Hospice seems a distant memory. The target was reached in the summer of 2014, it was then I decided to continue Lisa’s fund’ said Robert. All the profit from this event will be targeted specifically towards the New Hospice being built in the edge of Cambridge at Shelford Bottom, next to the park and ride.

If you enjoy Motown, come along! The New Hospice will open this November and will be able to take double the inpatients with twenty four beds, outpatients attending much needed clinics will also benefit having less waiting time and brand new state of the art facilities. The Hospice at Home team will also be taking extra patients, leading eventually to 1200 each year’ said Robert. All this comes at a eye watering price and they are, at present, £2.5 million short but it is very much hoped that the hospice will open on time. If you enjoy Motown, come along bring your friends and family and join in the fun. Tickets are £20 and are available now from The Maltings ticket line, Burrows books in High Street Passage 01353 669759, and from Robert on 07885 087 458.

Could you host a French Student in July? French students due to visit Ely later this year are looking for homes during their stay in the city.

If anyone can help out with accommodation, they should contact Sarah Pettit: sarahpettit@hotmail.co.uk / 07736 308047

The visits are being organised through the educational agency LEC and will take place from 6th to 19th July. During the stay, the students will be having supervised lessons at the Lighthouse Centre, Ely, in the mornings and outings and organised activities are arranged in the afternoons. It is the first time the agency has arranged a visit in the Ely area for the students, most of whom are in the second year of their English studies.

Children’s Poster Competition : Home/Refuge Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign (ERRC) is pleased to announce that it is holding a poster competition, open to children in East Cambridgeshire. The theme of the competition is ‘Home/Refuge’, and it is hoped that children will reflect on what these words mean to them, and how it would feel to be without a place of safety, and then express their ideas and thoughts in the form of posters.

ceremony will take place in mid-June, and the posters will be displayed in Ely Library, and at other venues around Ely, during Refugee Week (20th – 26th June) and the Isle of Ely Arts Festival. Poppy Pearce, who founded the ERRC, commented: “The competition is very timely, as the second ‘Dubs amendment’, calling for unaccompanied children to be brought to safety in the UK, was passed in Parliament in early May 2016. ‘Save the Children’ estimates that there are currently 26,000 lone child refugees in Europe. They are in great danger, and deserve our help and compassion – this is certainly something to reflect on as our own children draw their pictures in the safety of their homes.”

There will be a winner and a runner up for each of the four Key Stage age groups (5-7, 7-11, 11-14 and 14-16), and great prizes have been supplied by businesses in Ely. ERRC extends sincere thanks to Burrows Bookshop, City Cycle Centre, Ely Fudge Company, Razamatazz Magic Emporium, Tindalls, Toppings, WH Smith and Wilko for their generosity and support of the competition.

The competition closing date is 7th June, and entries can be dropped off at St Mary’s Surgery in Ely. In addition, some schools will be taking part in the competition, so do check with your local school to see if they are involved. For more information, please visit: http://bit.ly/posterERRC or email elyrefugeescampaign@gmail.com.

Judges of the competition are Ian Lindsay, the Mayor of Ely, Barbara Grafton, an artist who is based in the area, and Dr Dee McCormack, a local GP, who is part of the ERRC. The prize giving Elyi Magazine | June 2016

The Hanging Baskets of Ely So, who does do the plants and floral decorations around the town? Well, some of the tubs and plants in Jubilee Gardens are looked after by voluntary groups, but the hanging baskets, town planting and welcome troughs are planted up and tended by Ken and Linda Ellis.

Majesty’s 90th. birthday. Talking in numbers, this means 130 baskets, each with 9 plants, and the town planting. Or to put it another way, around 2000 plants! This meant reorganisation, and the erection of two larger poly tunnels in a sympathetic farmer’s yard out on Grunty Fen.

Retiring from teaching and nursing respectively, both with a love of plants whose interest in gardening going back more than forty years. Beginning Simply Gardening do Ely around twelve years ago, they initially provided gardening maintenance services and later propagating and selling plants. Four years ago, they were invited by The Ely In Bloom committee to tender for providing 120 hanging baskets, and plants for 8 tiered planters and 12 troughs in and around the town. Having been successful, four years on they are getting ready for this year’s display; red, purple and gold, the Queen’s racing colours in honour of her

As well as the planting, the couple are responsible for feeding and watering the plants from June to September. This requires touring the town in the early hours at 4.30 a.m. to avoid traffic, 3 times a week. So, if you see a white van parked in unusual places attached to a water bowser, please be patient! When asked why they do it, they will tell you that they regard the town as a bit of an extension of their garden, and enjoy making the environment look colourful and enjoyable for the people of Ely, as part of their contribution to the community. They are also part of the National Garden Scheme, and will be open to the public on June the 12th, along with other gardens in Ely. For more information about them, and the plants that they have for sale in Chapel Street, go to their website at www.simplygardeningofely.co.uk

Tickets available from boxoffice@kingsely.org or 01353 653931 In the year that marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men invite you to join them this summer for Shakespeare’s sparkling, battle-ofthe-sexes comedy, Much Ado About Nothing. Triumphant in battle, Don Pedro and his men return to Messina. The Governor, Leonato, toasts their success by throwing a masquerade ball where well-intentioned plots and evil schemes abound as enemies deceive lovers and friends trick friends in this lively summer comedy. Locked together in a ‘merry war’ Benedick, a confirmed bachelor and Beatrice, an avowed maid are resolutely set against marriage. However their friends have a plan. Their ‘will-they-won’t-they’ relationship is one of Shakespeare’s funniest and most famous love stories. This is an open air production - please bring your own low-backed seating or rugs. Pointing Closes on a high! The 2015 – 2016 Point-toPoint season in the East Anglian Region drew to a close at the Cambridgeshire and Enfield Chace meeting at Northaw on Bank Holiday Monday. It has been a successful season with no meetings lost due to bad weather, a goodly number of runners at each meeting and crowds well above average. The star of the area has been Gina Andrews, who is not only the East Anglian Ladies Area Champion but is also likely to capture the National Championship for the second year running. Although born in the area, Andrews, who now lives in Warwickshire with her husband Tom Ellis, runs a livery yard training pointers many of whom she has ridden to victory during the season.

She is the eldest of three siblings with younger sister Bridget now riding professionally and young brother Jack currently vying to win the National Novice Rider’s Championship. This, however, is hardly surprising as father Simon, who farms near Hitchin, was a leading jockey in the eighties and mother Joanna also rode a number of winners between the flags. Amongst the men, Sutton’s Dickie Collinson won the East Anglian Men’s Championship with 13 winners so far this season. Currently sidelined due to a recent bad fall at Whitfield, he will probably be back later this month to ride further afield as the national season draws to a close.

Leading trainer for the season is yet again Bury St Edmunds Andrew Pennock, who also provided Collinson with all his winning rides. Pennock has been a revelation over the last three seasons and clearly knows what it takes to get a horse ready to race. His stable star has been Galros Lady, the leading horse in East Anglia and currently sitting top of the National Mares Championship. Overall it’s been a great season which will burst into life again toward the end of November – watch out for news in Elyi. Tony Winchester

The Evolution of Sutton Masque Sutton Masque was formed as a new side two years ago. Bob had seen Morris dancing as a child and had promised himself that one day he would take it up. With several complete beginners and a couple of experienced dancers, the side began to practice in the winter of 2014.That summer, with a few simple dances under their belts, the new side did a few dance outs with friendly local sides but mainly they practised. By the next Summer there were more dances, an established group of dancers and a musician and several paying gigs. They danced for church fêtes, Sutton school fête and then on a hot August Saturday they danced around Sutton, first by the shop, then by the Deli where the first coin went in the hat, and then down at the Anchor. There people came out to watch, clap and top up the hat. The ‘bag’ for that day was over £20. Sitting on the terrace there they felt that they were eventually

a real side, small but fully launched. The photo says it all. They practised again through the winter. Adding a new dance to the repertoire was no longer the struggle it had been in the early days, but numbers were stable and they desperately needed new members. A second musician had been recruited to stand in when necessary and then there was a transforming piece of luck. Two morris dancers returned from 10 years in New Zealand and were looking for a side to dance with. They joined the side and gave it a real boost in numbers, enthusiasm and ideas. The kit was revolutionised, new dances added and more dancers joined. In three months the side went from seven dancers and a musician to photo: Chris Partington twelve dancers and two musicians. See them dancing out around Ely this Summer. Shelagh Partington

Coming up… Two local shows not to miss this June!

Matt Harvey Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre This month, always look on the bright side of life with a Monty Python musical and always look on the bright side of death with the darkly murderous demon barber, Sweeney Todd! Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is a kind-of new musical with a book by Eric Idle and an entirely new score, (well, almost) created by Eric Idle and John Du Prez. Audiences all around the world have been roaring with laughter since Monty Python’s Spamalot won the Tony Award for Best Musical. The show tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (cancelled due to health and safety) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features fantastic tunes more magical than a Camelot convention, including He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights of the Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song (Reader’s Digest Poll 2010) Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life. Spamalot is directed by Emily Starr and features the voice of Eric Idle himself as God, the production crew wittingly confirming they couldn’t afford to cart the actual comedian round the country! Performances are at the ADC Theatre, Park Street, Cambridge, CB5 8AS from Wednesday 29 June– Saturday 9 July 2016. Tickets prices range from £9-£15 with matinees available on the Saturday and Sunday. For tickets and more information, call 01223 300085 or visit adctheatre.com. Fancy something a little darker? Viva Group are bringing the hit musical Sweeney Todd to The Brook, Soham from Wednesday 15th to Saturday 18th June 2016. Go to their website to get tickets www.viva-group.org.uk/book-tickets. Matt

Ely Watercolour Workshop The Ely Watercolour Workshop is an informal group of aspiring, (or sometimes, perspiring), artists, of varying levels, who get together, weekly, on a Tuesday evening, at Ely Community College. The evenings run, officially, from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm but members may come and go as time or commitments allow. There is no formal tuition, but the members do try to help each other and will, occasionally, do demonstrations of various aspects of watercolour painting. A programme of ‘topics’, for each week, is produced, for each term, although the subjects are not mandatory. Members are free to ‘do their own thing’, if they so wish, but are invited to participate in the programme, as much as possible. In the summer term and holiday period, the EWW tries to encourage ‘outdoor’ painting with a selection of suggested venues, in and around Ely. We do, occasionally, arrange an all day workshop with an outside ‘professional’ artist, for extra tuition and experience. Each year, the EWW arranges TWO exhibitions of paintings, together with the ever popular hand painted greetings cards. One at Easter

Is there still a place for print advertising in this technological age? Too right there is! An online presence is essential as technology advances, but equally the value of community orientated print advertising has been proven. According to a Pitney Bowes survey, 76% of small businesses say their ideal marketing strategy combines both print and digital communication. We often hear people say, “What a great little resource the Elyi magazine is”. We are very proud of that.

and engaged audience and we will provide the ‘complete advertising package’. Readers spend more time per sitting with a community magazine than with the shorter shelf life of news media, so there’s more chance they will come across your advert, giving your advertising a ‘longer life’ and ensuring that your advertising campaign can still be generating exposure for months into the future. The Elyi magazine is read and re-read as it will be left in waiting rooms, on trains, taken into offices and left on the coffee table. We estimate that the average magazine is being picked up three or four times, this huge market is one which you really can’t afford to miss out on. We have our own team of dedicated distributors, with 10,500 copies currently being printed.

month - with the handsome block booking discount - and we even let you spread the cost! That’s over 115,000 impressions of your advert floating around Ely throughout the year.

We have also noticed that it’s not uncommon for seasonal services to ask to pause their advert because they are inundated with calls. Our growing online readership and our web edition gives your customers the opportunity to engage with you online through direct links. The relationship between our supporting advertisers and the community groups of Ely is a real strength. They make sure they are aware that it’s the advertising that sponsors their free space. So, we really value our advertisers. Without them we couldn’t promote and support the good causes, charities, and non-profit groups that we do.

Print marketing is used less so now stands out more.

Our distributors tell us how well it is received and feedback from businesses is consistently positive. Readers appreciate how community-centered it is but, equally, love reading the adverts and finding out what Ely and the villages have to offer. Advertising with The Elyi Magazine presents your business with the opportunity to generate highimpact visual coverage of your branding in front of a relevant

Distribution of The Elyi covers 8,500 homes and business in Ely, Queen Adelaide and Prickwillow and a further 2,000 copies are placed in the villages. Value for money and customer service are at the top of our priority list. We design, print, deliver door to door, upload to social media, tweet and place you on our website, all for the advert cost! A customer buying our popular quarter page advert for 11 issues gets a full year’s advertising for only £53.25 a
