WELCOME ...from the Editor Hello and welcome to the May magazine! We are very pleased to welcome to our pages Cllr Ian Lindsay who steps into Lis Every’s shoes this May as Mayor. We look forward to hearing all about his plans and activities this year. Also in this issue we hear from Ely Model Railway Club who have their very popular annual exhibition (see page 6) and a number of local businesses take the opportunity to tell us a bit about what they do. Without them we wouldn’t have a magazine so please do have a read and if and when you use their services, please tell them you saw them in the Elyi! It really helps them to know their support of the magazine is paying off.

You may have heard about the Wicken Fen ponies via the local press already but we couldn’t resist running our own article (page 29) These spunky little creatures are obligingly photogenic. Thank you to Tony Winchester, to whom we turn for all things equestrian. We hope to hear more about Cottenham Point to Point later on in the year too. While we are on the subject of horses, young Alice Trump sent in an article about what fun she has at pony club in Littleport (see page 8)

Elyi Magazine | May 2016

Introducing Ian Lindsay, Mayor Elect of Ely The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed in the April 2016 number of Elyi that Councillor Lis Every wrote her swan song as your Mayor. Unusually, she had served as Mayor for two successive years, and as a City we owe her a great vote of thanks for her massive achievements over that time. She is a human dynamo who has fought tirelessly on our behalf as the City Council has taken on many more responsibilities than in the past, and will be preparing itself for more in the future.

I was born in Cambridge but my family moved to the West Country when I was aged 5. Subsequently I returned to Cambridge as a medical student before joining the Medical Branch of the RAF and qualifying as a doctor. I knew RAF Hospital Ely well, but though one of my 3 children was born there, I never served at Ely. I was in the RAF for 29 years, and during that time my children all boarded at King’s School, so I got to know and love the City well. After numerous Service moves my wife, Suzanne, and I settled permanently here in 1997 before I left the RAF in 1999. Thereafter I worked in occupational medicine until finally retiring in 2013. Throughout my life I have always played racket sports, so since moving to Ely have been actively involved with running the Outdoor Sports Association and the Tennis Club, as well as playing squash whilst my knees still allowed. I still play real tennis at Newmarket, and lawn tennis here. I have always believed in public service so when I had a little more free time I joined the City Council 2 years ago, and have been on a steep learning curve ever since. I was somewhat startled, though greatly honoured, to be asked to become Mayor after such a short apprenticeship. However, with 4 ex Mayors still on the City Council and a group of highly experienced staff I will never lack for the best of advice. When next I write in this splendid magazine I will be decked in the full regalia of office, and what will I hope to achieve thereafter? That is quite simple: I will do my best to promote and realise The City of Ely Council’s vision for Ely, which is for it to be a successful, vibrant, attractive place, where people want to live, work and visit.

On 16th May at the Mayor Making Meeting at the Maltings she will be handing over to the new Mayor, and that is when I emerge from the shadows as the current Deputy Mayor to become the real article. So who am I?

Cllr. Ian Linsay

Babesiosis in Dogs, should l be worried? Babesiosis is a disease transmitted to dogs from ticks. Although common in both Europe and the USA it is relatively rare in the UK. Three cases have been reported recently in Essex affecting dogs that had not travelled outside the UK. While we should be aware that the disease is present in the UK there is no need to panic. The tick transmits into the dog’s bloodstream while it is feeding. Babesia then lives in the dog’s red blood cells and triggers destruction of the dog’s red blood cells. Affected dogs become anaemic and may appear pale in the gum and lethargic. There are many other causes of anaemia in dogs that are far more common, but all require veterinary attention so if you are worried please bring your dog in for a veterinary examination. In this area, we see relatively few ticks compared to the rest of the country mostly from May-August, although given the milder wetter winter it is possible they may increase in number early this year. There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk to your dog: Avoid walks where you know there are a high number of ticks; Remove ticks and check your dog’s coats and skin daily and remove any ticks that you find - our nurses can do this for you at no charge. We also have Tom ‘O Tick removes at the practice which makes removing ticks very straightforward; Kill the ticks if they bite your dog. We have two tablets available at Johnson and Scott which will kill ticks rapidly after they bite. One provides 3 months protection and other 1 month, depending on the length of cover you require. Both also control fleas. Repel ticks; If your dog is walking in an area with lots of ticks you may wish to use a product which repels ticks as well as killing them. J&S Vets also have an effective tick collar which lasts up to 8months.

If you have any questions, please get in touch, we offer a free parasite check 01353 634123.

Morris and May Morris dancers dance right through the year but May Day (1st May, not the bank holiday) is a special day in the Morris calendar and usually the beginning of the Summer dance out season. As May Day is at the weekend this year that weekend will be particularly crowded with dancing. The Sutton Beast is back ! One of the region’s most popular 10K and Fun Run events is back for 2016 and online entry for both races is open. ‘The Beast’ is held annually in Sutton, as part of its Feast events, and both races involve a multi terrain course – the Tony Robinson 10K taking you off the edge of The Isle of Ely, out into the Fens and back while treading on a variety of pathways, including road, grass and fen droves. This year’s event will be the first that is ‘chip timed’ and orgainsers Martin Pickering and Stuart Green are looking forward to it already, “Event preparation is all in hand and it promises to be the best yet. Both courses are in good shape! We are proud to say that we are supported by many local businesses including Cheffins who are the principal sponsor”. The event also features ‘The Mini Beast’ – a fun run designed with old and young alike in mind and is sponsored by ‘Treetops Soft Play’. Stuart said “this is a lovely family friendly event that last year broke all records in the number of participants. The local community all buy into it with runners ranging from 6 months to 75 years old. Some don fancy dress and others run for the team trophy. Elyi Magazine | May 2016

The MC for the event is no other than ITV News’s Donovan Blake and this year the musical backdrop will be provided by local band Blue Thunder. There will be a hamper raffle by Team Jacum and we will also be supported by the WI Café and the Sutton Feast BBQ. This year’s event takes place on Sunday June 19th 2016 and early entry is advised. Registration and number collection will open at 8.45am with the Mini Beast starting at 10am and the 10K at 11am. For more information and online entry please visit suttonbeast.com

The Mysterious Ponies of Wicken Fen Wander amongst the more remote parts of the National Trust’s Wicken Fen reserve and you may catch sight of the Konik Ponies. At present, the grazing team at Wicken manage around 100 of these amazing creatures. There are four herds, with one breeding group of 35 usually to be found on an area known as Baker’s Fen and Guinea Hall. These tough, chunky horses can survive in all weathers and are ideal at maintaining the Reserve by grazing happily at all times and on most flora. Hailing originally from Poland they are an echo of a now extinct Eurasian wild horse. Our Koniks’ came originally from a herd in a conservation area in Holland. They were acquired by the National Trust as they had a reputation for being hardy, relatively easy to handle and very well adapted to wetlands, which has proven to be the case. The majority are mouse dun in colour, they have thick stubby necks and a fully grown stallion will stand at around 13-2hh. Compared to the cosseted horses associated with nearby Newmarket, our Koniks are allowed a fair degree of independence, as if they are ‘wild’, and that’s how they are in their Native Poland. They are checked daily and have regular visits from a specialist vet to ensure they are fit and

www.elyimagazine.com

healthy whilst aesthetically never likely to win any beauty parade! But when the sun comes up on a cold and frosty winter’s morning there is no finer sight than a herd of Koniks galloping across the Fen. At this time of the year look out for the foals hiding in the shadow of their mothers. Soon they’ll come out of their shells and develop into precocious teenagers. Currently the NT are running a Sponsorship Scheme so why not contact the National Trust and find out more – or better still come to Wicken and have a look for them – they’re truly a sight to behold. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

www.elyimagazine.com

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Coming up… Ely & The Performing Arts May 2016 Matt Harvey Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre Hold onto your habits! CAT Theatre Company are bringing Sister Act to the Maltings this June! Featuring original music by Tony® and 8-time Oscar® winner ALAN MENKEN, SISTER ACT tells the hilarious story of Deloris Van Cartier, a wannabe diva whose life takes a surprising turn when she witnesses a crime and the cops hide her in the last place anyone would think to look—a convent! Under the suspicious watch of Mother Superior, Deloris helps her fellow sisters find their voices as she unexpectedly rediscovers her own. Director of Sister Act, Becky Green, says “What I love about this musical is that amongst all the glitz and groovy music, are a group of women who discover they are far more than what they believe to be. Sister Act, The Musical will make you want to get up and dance with the Sisters of Queen of Angels”. Musical Director, Mark Checkley said of the music “It’s fabulous…it’s infectious… it makes you laugh…and you will be guaranteed a great time.”

www.elyimagazine.com

Performances will be at The Maltings, Ely on 2-4 June 2016 at 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm). Tickets are £12 per person and are available from Burrows Bookshop, Ely or online at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/cately.

If you fancy something a little darker, but just as musical, then Viva Group present musical Sweeney Todd from Sunday 12th to Saturday 18th June 2016. Go to their website to get tickets - www.vivagroup.org.uk/book-tickets. Matt Harvey

Ely Watercolour Workshop

Ely City Women’s Institute

The Ely Watercolour Workshop is an informal group of aspiring, (or sometimes, perspiring), artists, of varying levels, who get together, weekly, on a Tuesday evening, at Ely Community College. The evenings run, officially, from 6.30 pm to 9.00 pm but members may come and go as time or commitments allow. The group, in one form or another, has been going for 30 years. There is no formal tuition, but the members do try to help each other and will, occasionally, do demonstrations of various aspects of watercolour painting. A programme of ‘topics’, for each week, is produced, for each term, although the subjects are not mandatory. Members are free to ‘do their own thing’, if they so wish, but are invited to participate in the programme, as much as possible. In the summer term and holiday period, the EWW tries to encourage ‘outdoor’ painting with a selection of suggested venues, in and around Ely. We do, occasionally, arrange an all day workshop with an outside ‘professional’ artist, for extra tuition and experience. Each year, the EWW arranges TWO exhibitions of paintings, together with the ever popular hand painted greetings cards. One at Easter and one in October school half-term holidays. The usual venue is the Almonry restaurant, off the Market Square, in central Ely. The fees are £20, per halfyear, payable at the first meeting in January, and first meeting in September. The man behind the rock ‘n’ roll squeezebox Why am I playing squeezebox for charity? When I came to Ely a year ago, I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t know where to go, what to do, or where to find a job. Community publications gave me a glimpse into what was going on – without that I would never have connected properly. That’s why I think Fenprobe Talking News is so important. Local media connects an area the way nothing can, and Fenprobe brings that media to the visually impaired by recording it and mailing it to those who cannot see it for themselves. Volunteers take the time to read the news while other volunteers record. On May 25th I’ll be belting out some Rock and Roll on the squeezebox down at the Kings Arms – donations will be taken for Fenprobe TN. You’ll hear something you might have never have heard before, and you’ll be giving those who rely heavily on their hearing a way to connect with the rest of Ely, an area I’ve grown to love. Come say hello and enjoy some tunes! Adam faber www.elyimagazine.com
