WELCOME ...from the Editor

EDITORIAL & DESIGN

Welcome back. Of course you may not have been away but we have! Team Elyi took a well earned rest from magazine duties for August and so here we are with a new school term, a new season and a freshly printed September magazine.

Editor Bridget Hickish 01353 662684 editor@elyimagazine.com

It has been a remarkeable year for the blooms in Ely we think, thanks in part to the showers early on in the season and to Ken and Linda’s green fingers of course. The Ely in Bloom judges were out and about in late July and you can see a run down of the results on page 24. Congratulations to Fairfax Court for their superb winning display this year. It would be great to have even more businesses involved next year. We will try to run some editorial on how to get involved with that next spring. A little bit of effort goes a long way and makes our city look fantastic.

We have been thrilled to see High Street Passage evolve over the summer with two new businesses filling the empty units there. Always a popular route through to the market, it now has even more to offer. Every shop offers something different, and they are working as a team to make sure that their little slice of the city becomes one of THE places to visit when people pop into Ely

If you have been meaning to get in touch but haven’t got round to it, now is the time before the Christmas rush when we have a high demand for space. I know I know - I’m sorry for mentioning it, but in retail or advertising it pays to think ahead. Ian Lindsay, Mayor of Ely Time and events have flown past since I last wrote in June. We have been privileged to visit a fine number of local events, ranging from the moving Cathedral Service to commemorate the role of the Cambridgeshire Regiment on the Somme, through to leading the parade of Morris men as part of the hugely popular Folk Festival, to much more local events, and award ceremonies. It is humbling to see just how much goes on within the City through the combined efforts of so many people doing their bit to enhance the lives of others.

into the Sessions House, which will allow us to use one of the upstairs rooms, the former juvenile court, as a council chamber. This will be a big advance because at present we do not have a permanent meeting place that is fully accessible to the disabled. Furthermore it will allow access to another room that can be used as a formal meeting room, as well as an office that we may be able to rent out. The Maltings is developing into a well used and delightful venue thanks to the combined efforts of our clerks and the venue manager , Rebecca, and her staff. It is proving to be a popular wedding venue with bookings stretching months ahead. It has also re-established itself as the favoured location for local theatre companies, and is well booked for a variety of events and meetings. We are developing longer term plans to brighten up the interior as well as eventually replacing the current moveable seating. Lastly, we have high hopes of refurbishing the Maltings cottage in association with Highfield School. They would like to use it to further their educational aims in developing a commercial environment, and we would hope to use it for additional purposes. All this takes time, and inevitably will need further investment. August has been a quieter month for us with so many people away on holiday. Ely has been looking its best and I have welcomed a number of foreign language school visitors to our offices. Trying to explain the role of the Mayor, and the intricacies of local government in England has been quite a challenge. Such concepts are difficult to explain to mainland Chinese children with their limited English, and my non-existent Mandarin. Despite the difficulties I think they enjoyed their visits, and were universally delighted with the opportunity to visit our prison cells in the South wing of the council building. A thousand snaps of children in cells will certainly cause interest back home, though the connection between a City council and the use of Police cells will be entirely lost in translation.

We also visited Poland briefly to attend my younger brother’s wedding to a Pole. It was a fascinating glimpse into another culture, but when we were there the outcome of the EU referendum was announced. A seismic event in the UK was barely remarked on over there. Over the last few months the Council has been much exercised in developing its relatively recently acquired assets. Amongst other things we are hoping to gain planning consent for putting a lift

A huge fete will be held at Emmaus Cambridge on Saturday 10th September to mark the 25th anniversary of Emmaus in the UK. The community, near Landbeach, opened in 1991 after local man, Selwyn Image, was challenged by a man at a soup kitchen to do something different to help the increasing number of homeless people living in the city. Having volunteered at an Emmaus community in France while a student in the 1960s, Selwyn set about bringing it to the UK, finding a site with rundown barns close to the A14 in Landbeach. Since then Emmaus Cambridge has developed into a vibrant community, supporting 37 formerly homeless people, known as companions.

More than just a bed for the night.....meaningful work in a social enterprise.

Offering more than just a bed for the night, Emmaus provides people who have experienced homelessness with a stable home, as well as meaningful work in a social enterprise. This stability and support makes it more likely they will be overcome homelessness long term. Since the first community opened in Cambridge, a further 27 have opened, and there are now 28 communities supporting more than 700 formerly homeless people across the UK. Representatives from more than 20 of the Emmaus communities will be travelling to Cambridge to hold stalls at the fete, selling a wide range of vintage items and bric-a-brac. Emmaus UK’s President, Terry Waite, will also be speaking at the event, and there will be a range of food and drink stalls.

Ely Writers’ Day subject to rjwestwell@hotmail.com by 24th September 2016.

A local short story competition has gone global with some of the early entries have coming from abroad – even as far as Thailand. The competition is open to all and the winners will be announced at the next Ely Writers’ Day which will be held on Saturday 15th October in St Peters’ Church Room in Broad Street, Ely from 1000 to 1500. Prizes are £50 for first prize, £25 for the second and £10 for the third prize.

Places for attending Ely Writers’ Day are limited so you should book early by contacting rjwestwell@hotmail.com. Entrance to the short story competition and Ely Writers’ Day is free, although there will be a request for donations at the end of Ely Writers’ Day.

To enter the short story competition, send an unpublished short story of 500 words on any

Ely Flower Club Annual Show - a great success The Annual Show held on 7th July included a floral competition followed by a few words from Marie Twinn a member of the Parkinson's UK Ely Support Group explaining how the Ely Support Group was set up and how it helped those suffering with Parkinson's, which members found very interesting. Joyce Svensson, President, presented a cheque to Marie for

£250 raised by the Club throughout the year. (Photo attached). Lots of exhibits were entered into the competition. 4 Classes and Best in Show. It was wonderful to see the hall full of sensational displays. Again the standard was very high in the Novice and Advanced Classes which made it very difficult for members and visitors to choose which one to vote for. Two of the classes had joint winners. The next meeting is on Thursday 8th September, Demonstrator Tim Meakin from Wisbech whose theme is "Autumn Splendour". Venue Needhams Hall, Ely College. Starts at 7.15pm. Visitors £5. Members £2. Come along and have a relaxing evening watching wonderful flowers being arranged and meet new friends.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Get out your boobie cakes for the Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal! The annual Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal has launched in support of breast cancer patients at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

Emily Willdigg, Community Fundraiser at ACT explains: “Having an x-ray specimen machine at the Cambridge Breast Unit will improve the diagnosis of small calcifications that may be cancer, in a breast vacuum biopsy. With this, the team can analyse the specimen faster and improve patients’ safety and comfort. We’re very grateful to Neaves & Neat and Mr Hugh’s for supporting the year’s appeal to help breast cancer patients.”

The appeal, organised by Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), asks people to get together with family, friends, work colleagues or fellow students on Friday 21 October for a fundraising afternoon tea party. People are encouraged to bake or buy boobie-shaped cakes of all varieties. The appeal aims to raise £50,000 to buy a special x-ray specimen machine for the Cambridge Breast Unit and help the team to screen one more patient every day.

Addenbrooke’s Breast Cancer Appeal tea party hosts will receive a party pack including balloons, banners and pin badges.

This year the appeal is generously sponsored by Neaves & Neat recruitment consultancy and Mr Hugh’s rapeseed oil.

Making Their Mark! If you head down to Babylon Arts Gallery, Waterside, Ely in the middle of September you will discover an exhibition entitled ‘Land Marks’ and you would be forgiven for thinking that this might be a show of paintings of familiar landmarks. In fact the title is a play on words referring to the variety of ways artists make marks to depict a landscape, from simple pencil lines to etching into layers of colour, through to creating textured papers to collage onto a work.

Get help or volunteer.

Timebank.

Time Banking is a way for people to come together and help each other by exchanging knowledge, help and skills. Five contemporary landscape artists, collectively known as ‘Artscape’, are featured in this exhibition which explores the diverse techniques they have developed to achieve the effects they want in their paintings. All the artists use their chosen media in different ways and they will be in the gallery at weekends to talk to visitors so it is a great opportunity to come along and be enthralled, not only by the wonderful paintings on show and the stories behind them, but also the methods used to create them. Julie Baker, Natasha Day, Katrina Wilkie, Lyz Gardner and Karen MacWhinnie all live in East Anglia and many of the paintings in the exhibition are inspired by the landscape in this region, from Wicken Fen to the coast. So yes, there will be paintings of landmarks they love too!

Exhibition: Tues. 13th Sept. to Sun. 2nd Oct. Gallery opening times: Tues to Fri 12.00 to 4.00, Sat & Sun 10.00 to 4.00, closed Mon. Free entry. www.artscape-uk.com

On Willderland Farm penned by member Kasia Brookes

At Willderland Farm, Sam, our neighbour, is surveying the results of our first labours. Having been kindly loaned a mower for a day in the late summer of 2015, we cut back the long almostvirgin grass, so that we can get a good look at the lie of our land, with all of its hidden hillocks, hollows and ponds. We have carefully left a border of long grass along the hedgerows so that the wildlife has somewhere undisturbed to feed and move about in. Sam is unconvinced. A group of us bought these 4.5 acres of Cambridgeshire Fenland at auction in 2015, with dreams of having a swathe of open land and sky. Twelve shareholders, along with anyone who would like to become a member for £40 a year (www.willderland.com for more info), will get to sow seeds, plant trees, survey the wildlife, attend festivals, and share in the produce. So far, we have planted an orchard of fruit trees – apples, plums, cherries and quinces – and have held work/campfire days to cut back the brambles, built a compost toilet and a shed, planted asparagus and fruit bushes, and released a kestrel and a little owl from Cambs Wildlife Care. We’ve also borrowed a few tough Texel sheep to graze the grass. Next year when the orchard fruits, we’ll be sharing our harvests and making lots of cider to fuel our summer festivities. But for this year we will be bringing in most of the booze for the festival.

Our aspirations are to have a space where we can relax, watch wildlife and experiment with various agro-ecological techniques (growing crops in a way which does not harm, and may ultimately increases the richness of animals and plants in the locality). We just want to look after the land, let it look after us, and have some fun whilst we’re at it! To find out more about what we do, the festival or to sign up as a member please contact us via the website: www.willderland.com

Recruiting on-call firefighters at Ely fire station Do you want the opportunity to work as a team protecting your local community? Do you live or work within 5 minutes of your local fire station? On-call firefighters are a vital part of today’s fire and rescue service. They provide an efficient and effective service that gives emergency cover to local communities.

You will recieve an annual wage reflecting the time you commit, plus additional payments for attending drill nights and incidents.

As an on-call firefighter you will carry a pager and when “on-call”, remain within 5 minutes of the station to respond to emergency incidents as and when they happen.

We also offer: • Paid holiday • Pension • Opportunities for progression • An Employee Assistance Programme

We ask for a commitment of at least 49 hours per week (on average). This could be during the day, night, weekends or a combination of all. We are committed to achieving fairness and equality in employment and service delivery. We welcome applications from suitably skilled candidates from all sectors of the community.

Find out more and come along to our on-call recruitment information evening on Monday September 5 at Ely fire station, 7pm-9pm For further information and to apply online visit our website at cambsfire.gov.uk or call 01480 444500

COULD YOU BE AN ON-CALL FIREFIGHTER IN ELY? MORE on-call firefighters are needed to swell the ranks at Ely Fire Station.

The crew does not just attend fires; road traffic collisions are common place, especially on the area’s rural roads, and they can also be called upon to assist with a variety of other incidents including animal rescues.

Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service is hoping to encourage those who live or work within five minutes of the Egremont Street on-call fire station to consider taking up the role to help out their community.

Owing to the location of Ely Fire Station, the crew will often be called to assist at larger incidents all over the county, including in Cambridge, Fenland and sometimes over the border in Suffolk, to support a large scale operation or an incident that could be ongoing for a long period of time.

On-call firefighters are fully trained professionals who save lives in their communities alongside their day-to-day jobs and home lives. They carry a pager and respond to emergency incidents as and when they happen.

Come along to Ely’s on-call firefighter Recruitment Information Evening taking place on Monday, September 5th 2016, between 7pm and 9pm at Ely Fire Station to find out more.

They are men and women who may have other jobs and are able to provide evening, daytime or weekend cover. They receive an annual wage to reflect the time they commit plus additional payments for attending training and incidents.

You can also find out more by logging on to www.cambsfire.gov.uk/careers or calling 01480 444500.

The firefighters at Ely come from a variety of backgrounds and include parents, engineers and businessmen. The one thing they all have in common is the desire to provide an emergency service to their community. www.elyimagazine.com

Use us, we’re here to help!

We are delighted to be helping so many groups publicise their events and find new members. With the magazine going to virtually every home in Ely and being distributed to drop-off points around selected villages - as well as being available to pickup in shops and restaurants - its a great way to reach a very large number of readers. 10,500 copies are currently being printed and we suspect our readership is much much larger than that. Even our online version is growing in readership and is particularly popular with people from outside of Ely who want to keep in touch with what is going on. editor@elyimagazine.com DEADLINE ALWAYS 10th of preceding month
