WELCOME ...from the EDITORS Dear Readers, Welcome to the April issue. This month we are encouraging you to shake off the winter blues by featuring some of the thriving sports clubs, here in Ely. There is so much to choose from for all ages. See page 40 for a moving story of one woman’s romance with rowing! The city’s cultural calendar of events is starting to fill up as we get into spring and there are even some new events like the innovative and exciting science festival at the Cathedral to look forward to as well as the regular annual Eel Day celebrations and the long running Ely Folk Festival coming up in the summer. See page 41 for an extract from the Cathedral What’s on guide for April showing all the extra services for Easter as well as the regular events diary.

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY Lent is proceeding at a snail’s pace, but so far not a drop of alcohol, other than communion wine, has passed my lips despite multiple temptations. No doubt self denial is a really good thing, but it comes at a price. Particularly if you have paid good money to attend dinners or other events that include the demon drink in the price of the ticket. The official opening of work on the Southern bypass duly passed off in a blaze of high visibility jackets and hard hats on the 9th of March, and the real work is underway. The great and the good were allowed to cut the first sods marking the end of decades of planning, negotiation and sheer hard work. As the event unfolded 2 passenger trains and 2 long goods trains trundled past, the level crossing gates in Ely were closed for an extended period and there was the familiar tailback to Stuntney. Some of the guests were delayed by a closure of the A10 following an accident. All this underlined how vital the improvements in transport infrastructure are to our City, the district, the county and, indeed, nationally in terms of road and rail freight distribution. One can only hope that devolution may speed up the uncorking of so many other bottle necks in the coming decade.
of course, the council members are themselves volunteers. Furthermore personnel from the USAF bases also play a role, and I had already been across to RAF Mildenhall earlier in the month to present around 40 certificates to those involved in the Christmas lights. The next big event for us all will be the annual litter pick on Sunday 2nd April and this now involves 6 different local organisations and other volunteers working in concert. Thus it is apparent that volunteering is core to good citizenship, and I am really pleased to report that the deputy Mayor and the Mayor are involved in the Local Hero Awards, set up and co-ordinated by Naomi Sherwood of MetroRod. This exciting new initiative will feature in the Elyi next month. See page 37 of this issue for poster). We have agreed that the serving mayor will be involved in the judging at the end of their mayoral year, and the deputy will be involved in the presentation ceremony just after they have assumed the chain and gown at the start of their year in office thus avoiding any controversy that might be involved in deciding winners and finalists. Finally, now that the Fashion Show has taken place, the final big event in support of the Mayor’s charity will be the Ball at the Maltings on Saturday 22nd of this month. I’m looking forward to tripping the light fantastic, and hope to see many of you there. Ian Lyndsay
The Mayor’s Easter Ball 22nd April 2017
Back at Parish level we have more recently been both celebrating volunteers and been planning to utilise their good will further. As a Council, back on 27th February we had our annual award ceremony in recognition of those who do so much on behalf of the council itself. Over a hundred people are involved in activities as diverse as Ely in Bloom, CCTV monitoring, the erecting and dismantling of Christmas lights, the light switch event, running the allotments, and, 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,
Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ELY’S BEST LOVED QUIRKY EEL FESTIVAL IS BACK 28th April to 1st May 2017
Ely is preparing itself once again for its four day extravaganza to celebrate the origins of the humble eel. Organised by the Visit Ely team, Ely’s Eel Festival Weekend runs from 28th April to 1st May. This year, as always, we see the return of the Eel Food Safari which runs all weekend where a selection of local food outlets provide special dishes inspired by the eel theme. The Eel Parade kicks off Saturday’s Eel Day with a colourful array of eels processing through Ely’s High Street, down to the river where a whole host of eel related activities take place. Special highlights include the Town Criers’ Competition and the World Eel Throwing Competition (no eels will be harmed in this competition, just stuffed toys!). Can you beat the World Record of over 17 metres? The full programme of arena events includes music, dancing, a living history encampment and a street food scene (including eels!). Rounding up the weekend is the ever popular two day Food and Drink Festival where over 60 artisan and specialist food and drink traders will be showcasing their wares. We have an amazing Street Food Scene, comprising of a range of culinary delights which will tantalise your taste buds with the unusual, yet exquisitely crafted combinations. We also have a beer tent and cocktail bar with some easy listening live music to enjoy.
This year we welcome into our fabulous Cookery Theatre internationally renowned chef Theo Randall and current MasterChef’s winner Jane Devonshire who will be demonstrating a variety of dishes alongside some of our much loved local chefs. New this year is our Kitchen Pantry on St Mary’s Green with a selection of goodies to help stock your pantry, some handy gadgets and beautiful kitchenware along with a seating area and some scrumptious light bites. Also the chance to personally meet and greet our celebrity chefs for a Q&A hour plus book signings at our “Audience With” sessions which will be held at Oliver Cromwell’s House. Check out our website for booking details. All in all, Ely will make the perfect place for a Spring Bank Holiday visit. For the full Ely Eel Festival programme check out: www.elyeelfestival.co.uk

The credit for our success as a club is due to the commitment of our young players, the endeavours of our club's qualified and enthusiastic coaches, our many marvelLous volunteers, our players' parents and our sponsors.
ELY RUGBY CLUB Ely Rugy Club is a local club at the heart of our community, with strong links to local schools. We are delighted with the number of players who progress up the age levels and into our senior teams. Keeping players involved throughout their school days and beyond means that they benefit from being part of the rugby family and from the friendships and health benefits that our sport offers.
We introduce rugby in 3 incremental stages, starting with tag rugby at U6s, so that by Under 13 level players have the skills and knowledge to participate in the full 15-a-side game. This progression accommodates the changing developmental abilities of children as they mature, with the emphasis om the improvement of individual skills through purposeful and enjoyable activity. We test these skills in match situations through a limited number of friendly and competitive fixtures and tournaments/ festivals each season. We are always delighted to welcome new players and their parents to the club. No prior rugby experience is required and the game is open to both boys and girls. For further information please contact Karen Wilson, Fixtures Secretary: kwilson67@btinternet.com

ELY CATHEDRAL SCIENCE FESTIVAL
Big names, dinosaurs, rocket shows and explosive displays at Ely Cathedral Ely Cathedral is hosting its first ever Science Festival - a month long event of interactive fun and discovery exploring science and the natural world through art, music, exhibitions and fun activities for all ages. This extraordinary festival will involve science shows, live experiments, prehistoric creatures and fascinating talks by leading experts. Highlights include lectures by Prof Robert Winston, a dinosaur dig with life size T REX, an explosive show with Dr Bunhead and a Sci-Fi Prom featuring music from favourite composers and popular film scores. For the duration of the Festival a specialist exhibition will be on display in the Lady Chapel exploring the world of science from 'Dinosaurs to DNA' and will include a rare opportunity to see many national and local artefacts of great scientific significance including an original copy of Darwin's

BACK IN THE FLOW - AT ELY ROWING CLUB Back in 2012, at forty-seven years old, married with three children, I was struggling with menopausal symptoms when my Dad suddenly died of cancer. Heavily overweight, I was feeling a “bit blue” which is apparently how most “strong women” describe borderline depression. Never a sporty person, I bunked off “Games” wherever possible and Amateur Dramatics had kept me busy for thirty years until I became a Leadership Coach in 2004. Yogalates, Zumba, tap dancing, salsa, I’ve tried them all, but most were followed by a doughnut or a visit to the pub! At twelve my son wanted to take up rowing with my husband and youngest daughter and I too signed up for the Learn to Row Course. Secretly, I thought “I’ll hate it but I’ll give it a try.”

…Two sessions in: “I love rowing!” The elegance of positioning the body in each stroke. I found peace in the quiet of being on the misty water, being close to nature in the early morning, with the sun rising and the Cathedral lit gold as a backdrop. I joined the Women’s VIII, my technique and fitness improved dramatically and I dropped 30lbs and two dress sizes in 18 months, all because I wanted to be in the boat! Rowing has enabled me to switch off from my everyday worries, build strength, resilience, self-control and the determination to just keep going: to win, to win for the crew. the British Museum at the end of last year. This would be a highlight in the prehistory gallery! Ely Museum is run by a board of Trustees and, in order to develop in line with their future plans, the board wishes to recruit new members with skills in law, human resources, fundraising and project management. As well as contributing to the work of the museum, being a trustee is personally rewarding too: it provides an opportunity to grow and develop personally and professionally, and is a way of giving something back to support the local community.
If you or anyone you know would be interested in becoming a trustee or would like to find out more, please contact the curator Elie Hughes on 01353 666 655 or email: curator@elymuseum.org.uk

Newly formed Littleport and Ely Timebank are going from strength to strength since uniting in November last year. Not only can you volunteer your time doing something you enjoy to share with someone who wants to learn or needs a helping hand, you can earn yourself an hour to spend on help for yourself! The last few weeks have seen sewing alterations, card making, knitting of tea cosies, computer help and removal of rubble in a garden. Luckily we are blessed with 3 graphic designers in the Timebank who are busy taking our leaflets and banners to the next level and we are in the process of matching up befrienders with befriendees! The community spirit in the Timebanking community is strong, with members looking to hold the first social gathering bringing Littleportians and Elysians together to meet and share ideas over something homemade in the next few weeks. Help like this can be taken for granted because generally people have the time or are in good health, but for others it can mean a real difference to their lives for a simple offer of help. If you want to find out more, come and speak to members at Ely’s Litterpick planned for the 2nd April outside VCAEC at 10am or drop into one of our weekly Thursday coffee mornings at Starbucks from 9.30am. LOCAL CHURCHES LAUNCH DEBT ADVICE CENTRE Churches Together in Ely will be offering free help to local people after partnering with an award-winning national debt counselling charity. Church members have joined forces with Christians Against Poverty (CAP) and will be offering home visits for people affected by debt. Over the last few years CTiE (Churches Together) have been running CAP’s free Money Management Course and now are expanding to open a debt centre, which will be based at St Mary’s Church in Ely. Ely centre manager John Hociej said: “Typically, debts can build up when a relationship breaks down, someone loses their job, or through bereavement – those times when often people are least able to cope with a financial headache. “We hope over the next few years to help countless local people and families, regardless of their age, gender, faith or background, to put their debt nightmares behind them and start a new life.” He added that every client is visited in their own home, CAP does all the negotiating with creditors, while local volunteers offer support to each person until they become debt free. The debt centre launch was celebrated with a service at St Mary’s Church, Ely on March 19th. As part of the launch service John Read from CAP UK spoke about the work of Christians Against Poverty.
