Welcome to the February 2016 edition of the Elyi Magazine. We are delighted to be featuring lots of info, groups and activities again. Lis Every tells us about her commitment to promoting volunteering in the region and how we can get involved in the Queen’s 90th birthday initiative of ‘Pride in our Cities’. The Almonry are also offering a free glass of house wine with their winter menu. Don’t forget to take the magazine along to qualify for this offer! As well as reporting for us on Cottenham Point to Point, Tony Winchester tells us about events at Welney and encourages us to get along to see the amazing Swan feeding sessions before the end of Feb. The much anticipated Lettering Exhibition starts at the Cathedral this month featuring some very rare bits and bobs, see page 23 and we start the build up to Ousefest which takes place in July. Do have a look at their fabulous website where you can keep up to date with plans for this year. We love it when businesses get stuck into their community and send our hearty congratulations to Quy Mill Hotel for winning Matt Harvey page 43 www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre Tony Winchester page 17 & page 35 anthony.winchester@btinternet.com

the Arthur Rank Challenge. What a great idea for a fundraiser - perhaps something we could do in Ely? Our centre pages feature the renamed Babylon Arts. It sounds very exciting and great to have this cultural resource within the city. For our Fenland Champion this month we feature Riverford Organic farms on page 32. They are running a course in Witcham to teach you how to have fun with your vegetables sounds exciting! Regular columnist and thesp, Matt Harvey brings us news of a british classic being performed by Ely Amateur Dramatic Society. Thankyou for all the positive comments about the magazine. It’s great to know it is being read and enjoyed by so many people. Do get in touch if your group or club isnt featured yet. best wishes Bridget

Elisabeth Every, Mayor of Ely January is always a quiet month and this one was no exception. The Pantomime was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by the packed audiences. It certainly is a highlight in our winter programme at the Maltings. However, it has given me more time to think about the Mayor’s Charity for this year. Last year you supported the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices and we were delighted with the generosity from you for this fantastic charity. We raised just over £12,000 and this will fund 2 days at the Milton Hospice. I wanted to do something different this year and thinking about all the people I have met and charities I have worked with, I wanted to support the local activities of our wonderful volunteers. Not sure just the best way to do this, I consulted with others involved in this sector

Last year's Gala Dinner with representatives from EACH and Lord Archer who was the guest speaker, held in the Lady Chapel.

and am delighted that the Mayor’s Charity will be working together with Ely Hereward Rotary Club and the Voluntary & Community Action East Cambs (VCAEC) to do just this. We will be creating a steering group with other interested parties to run a series of events which will include ‘The Mayor’s Ball’ on 5 March at the Maltings, all under the heading ‘Celebration of Volunteering’. Details will follow and it is all looking very exciting! As we know, volunteering is an essential component of our lives and with changes in government policy and funding, there is a real need to support charities that deliver services to the population of Ely. We wanted to support the sustainability of VCAEC and other volunteers. The current objectives are: to promote volunteering in general and the VCAEC in particular: to increase the capacity of the Volunteer Centre through publicity: to raise monies and enable an increase in the training. It will also support the purchase of much needed equipment to allow the VC to operate more effectively. We will also be supporting the Queen’s 90th birthday idea of Pride in our Cities, here in Ely. We already have some funds and thanks to the Pantomime for raising some funds, too. If you would be interested in being involved, I would love to hear from you on my email: elisabeth.every@elyofcitycouncil@org.uk I’m looking forward to working with you! Lis

A Jewel on your Doorstep! Many residents of Ely are unaware that around ten miles from the City boundary can be found the wonderful Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust reserve at Welney and there is no better time to pay it a visit than now with the thousands of swans and ducks dominating the area. Each winter there is a bird life spectacular as thousands of migrating swans from Iceland and the Russian Tundra choose to spend their winter vacation on or around the Ouse Washes, a 22 mile long stretch of flood plain that is also home to some 1300 acres of land which make up the WWT reserve. The swans are always joined by wildfowl from Northern Europe including Wigeon, Teal, Pochard, Pintail and

many more and these amazing creatures can often be seen clouding the skies as they wheel around looking for feeding areas and roosting sites during the day.

The swans tend to be most active at dawn and dusk when they fly to and from their feeding grounds out in the fields surrounding Welney looking for their favourite foods including sugar beat tops and rotting potatoes. But that is not all, the reserve is also home to many hares and the WWT hold regular hare walks giving visitors the

opportunity to get up close and personal with these masters of camouflage. Another asset of this natural reserve is the changing face of the land throughout the year. From vast areas of water during the winter months to grazing fields for numerous cattle and sheep in the summer, Welney is truly a place for all seasons. There are excellent catering facilities and throughout the Winter the reserve is open daily from 10.00to 5 p.m. It is also currently offering the spectacular floodlit swan feeds on Thursdays - Sundays at 6.30 p.m each week until the end of February. Want to know more - then why not visit the website at www.wwt.org.uk/welney or telephone 01353 860711 for the latest news.

Cathedral Exhibition A fascinating exhibition is taking place this February at Ely Cathedral and will include several rarely seen documents and manuscripts including a private copy of The Four Gospels which has been loaned to Ely Cathedral by HM The Queen. Printed on hand-made paper with wood-engraved illustrations, this striking manuscript is one of the most famous works by British print maker Eric Gill and forms part of The Royal Collection Trust. Other notable exhibits are a 12th Century hand written manuscript, the Liber Eliensis, which covers the period from the founding of the abbey at Ely in 673 until the middle of the 12th century, and incorporates documents and stories of saint’s lives. It was supposedly written by the monks when Ely was still an Abbey. There will also be a Royal Charter of Henry VIII which is a grant to re-found the Cathedral and is dated 1541.

More contemporary exhibits will include rarely seen and privately owned documents and print samples by William Morris, the Kindersley Workshop and the most famous of the private presses, the Kelmscott Press. Many of today’s leading craftsmen in the art of calligraphy, letter carving and fine printing will also have their work on display making it one of the most unique exhibitions of its kind. There will be plenty to see and do for families including a working press and children’s workshops. ‘In the Beginning was the Word’ is taking place in The Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral between 4th – 28th February inclusive. FRIDAY 4 MARCH 2016, 1.45pm at St Peter’s Church, Broad Street, Ely RECEIVE CHILDREN. RECEIVE ME.

Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international and ecumenical prayer movement that invites women from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer. On Friday 4 March an estimated 3 million people in over 170 countries and

islands will gather to observe the day of prayer, using an order of service written by Christian women in Cuba, and translated into over 60 languages and 1000 dialects. In the British Isles alone over 6,000 services will be held. The day begins as the sun rises over the island of Samoa and continues until it sets, off the coast of American Samoa, some 35 hours later. Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at St Peter’s Church, Broad Street, Ely, starting at 1.45pm. The theme ‘Receive children. Receive me’ reflects St Mark’s Gospel, ch10 vs13-16, which is the focus of the service and a reminder that everyone is a child of God and equally

worthy of our love and respect. The Republic of Cuba is the largest Caribbean island, located at the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico and called ‘the Key to the Gulf’. Politically at odds with the USA, Cuba suffered greatly due to the economic embargo imposed upon it in 1960 but has found strength within itself to move on and overcome many of its problems. This is not a day of prayer just for women – everyone is welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. Light refreshments will be served before the service in St Peter’s Church Room (beside the church). Further info from Celia: 07810 782641 or see the website: www.wwdp.org.uk.

Victory for Quy Mill & Spa in the Arthur Rank Accumulator Challenge! Arthur Rank Hospice is thrilled to announce that twelve teams raised an impressive £12,000 this year, in a fundraising initiative which has now generated more than £64,000 for the Charity! Quy Mill Hotel & Spa were crowned victors of the Accumulator Challenge 2015, at the closing party in January having raised £4250 through their festive activities. The fundraising initiative, which has seen eighty teams take part since it started four years ago, was closely contested this year by twelve teams who were all given a crisp £50 at the outset by sponsors ARM. The aim of the Accumulator Challenge was to multiply that initial investment into as much money as possible through creative, original and entrepreneurial activities, between 1 October and 31 December 2015. Community Fundraiser Aisha Hunt from Arthur Rank Hospice Charity comments: “We have been delighted with the response from Cambridge’s business and community groups; there were some truly

ingenious fundraising activities that went on this year. We loved hearing about lunch with Santa at Quy Mill Hotel, Go Glass’ glass decorating workshops (who took second place, raising £1730) and the 13th Cambridge Cubs’ chocolate bingo night! Even the Hospice’s In-patient Unit got involved organising Bake Offs and a Bonus Ball competition. We’re already looking forward to next year and would encourage any companies or community groups who might be interested to take on the challenge to get in touch now.” Other team highlights across the three months included CRC’s car wash and cake sales, Fratelli Hair’s raffle, Little Star Day Nursery’s Christmas stall at Waterbeach fete, Premier Travel (Addenbrooke’s) taking part in Ely Festive 5K, Woodfines desk & present wrapping service, Premier Travel (Ely) and Sainsbury’s Coldham’s Lane raffles & merchandise sales and Peasgood & Skeates lucky dip roulette.

Thanks to the support of ARM the £12,000 raised by the Accumulator Challenge 2015 will be directed towards the £2 million required annually to supplement the NHS contribution and fund the vital additional services provided by the Hospice free of charge to those living with life-limiting illness in Cambridgeshire. Simon Humphrey, Corporate Responsibility Manager at ARM said: “Another incredible performance by the teams this year. We are proud to be involved through our donation of the seed funding, but the real credit has to go to the twelve teams, not only for the money raised towards the exciting new facility, but through their efforts, raising the profile of Arthur Rank House across the region.” Organisations, individuals and businesses who have a competitive streak and pride themselves on entrepreneurial spirit and creativity are invited to register their interest in the Accumulator Challenge 2016 now, by emailing aisha.hunt@ arhc.org.uk

Local Cooking Class by Riverford Farms Riverford has been growing and delivering its iconic organic veg boxes to homes across the country for nearly 30 years, and are famous for championing veg-centric dishes. Here at the Elyi, we love getting our five-a-day! Obviously, it goes without saying that fruit and veg are remarkably comestible when incorporated into cakes and puddings – but when it comes to making interesting side dishes and even main meals out of vegetables, we often lack inspiration. At a time when ‘new year, new me’ is being bandied about like nobody’s business, perhaps it’s time we recognised that boiled broccoli and tinned sweetcorn just aren’t going to cut the mustard anymore. This is where Riverford Organic Farms can help us. They’re running a very special “Master Veg” course here in Ely to help us get the most out of our veg box or supermarket haul… Riverford founder Guy Watson says: “Our cooking classes will show you that you don’t have to settle for boring boiled carrots, and that you can make cabbage or cauliflower really exciting. Our veg is grown for flavour, rather than yield, and our friendly cooking

classes will show you how to make veg the star of your plate.” The evening will involve a 2 hour hands-on cooking course, followed by a meal where you get to enjoy the food you’ve cooked – sounds good to us! The vegetables chopped and prepared during the course of the class will be a selection of the best of the seasonal produce grown on Riverford’s organic farm at Sacrewell in Cambridgeshire. Date: Wednesday 17th February 2016 Time: 6:30 – 9pm Address: Witcham Village Hall, The Slade, Witcham, CB6 2LB Booking Link: https://billetto.co.uk/en/events/ riverford-master-veg-class-9dd31f Classes cost £25 per person. Those who place an order for a veg box on the night will be credited the cost of the class to their Riverford account, and take home a Riverford cookbook, worth £16.99!

Guy Watson founded Riverford in 1987 delivering organic vegetables to 30 local homes in Devon. He has a regular Column in the Telegraph and has been named farmer of the Year twice.

Lucky the Rains stayed away... …were the optimistic words spoken at the start of the latest Cottenham point-topoint on Sunday 3rd January. Sadly despite the optimism the heaven’s opened leaving horses, riders, and the crowd wet and physically cold but warmed through due to the excellent day’s racing with two wins for East Anglian based connections. Local highlight was the success of Jockey Richard Collinson who lives in Sutton and is currently stable jockey to Bury St Edmunds trainer Andrew Pwennock. Collinson had four rides but had to wait until the last race of the day to achieve success when his mount, Galros Lady held off the strong challenge of Leo Mahon, riding Gustave Mahler, a raider from Worcestershire

Collinson had a period riding professionally and, whilst he had some success, he eventually decided to return to the amateur ranks. Leading Gentleman rider in East Anglia last season, his relationship with Pennock has been very successful and if today’s results are anything to go by another successful season seems likely.

Manager to Sheikh Maktoum owner of the Godolphin Empire, one of the largest flat race training establishments in Newmarket.

Earlier James Ferguson got off the mark, riding his Father, John’s horse, Tommy O’Dwyer, to a 5 length victory in the First Division of the Older Horse Maiden. Ferguson Senior, used to train all his horses but now leaves them in the capable hands of his friend Nick Wright who trains just outside Newmarket. It’s hardly surprising that he has let go of the training reins as he just happens to be Racing

By the time of the next Elyi there will have been a couple more meetings at Ampton and Higham – hopefully we’ll be able to bring you more good local news in the next edition.

Theconnartist just leading Galros Lady on the first circuit.

The rest of the day belonged to horses from outside the area with winners from Shropshire, Warwickshire, Oxfordshire, Worcestershire and Leicestershire.

Coming up…Ely & The Performing Arts February 2016 A little look at some local, home-grown shows in the area. Matt Harvey, Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre

otograp hy

So what is it like directing a play involving a topsy turvy set, real musical instruments and lots of physical comedy? I asked the play’s director Tony Ransome. “This is the society’s first play of 2016, our 128th year of putting on a show since the society first started in 1888. The Ladykillers is a wonderfully witty play based around a handful of misfit characters and the central character of Mrs Wilberforce - a sweet little old lady who turns out to be a force to be reckoned with.”

The show will be performed at Ely College, Downham Road between Thursday 18th – Saturday 20th Feb 2016, starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £9 from the box office, Burrows Bookshop 01353 669759, or online at £9.95 (which includes a booking fee) at: www.ticketsource.co.uk/ elyamateurdramaticsociety Don’t miss it!

Stuart Ph

The play is based on the 1955 British film starring Alec Guinness in which, posing as amateur musicians, Professor Marcus and his gang rent rooms in the lopsided house of sweet but strict Mrs Wilberforce. The villains plot to involve her unwittingly in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job. The police are left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men. But who will be forced to face the music?

City of Ely Amateur Dramatic Society are pleased to present The Ladykillers – the classic black comedy tale of a sweet little old lady pitted against a gang of criminal misfits who will stop at nothing.

Cast member Nick Timmings also said “I play Professor Marcus – a very arch and clever man who tries to keep his motley group of criminals together. Rehearsing is such a lot of fun, which I’m sure will come through in all the performances”.

Lions of Littleport

In the weeks up to Christmas we helped at Lily House and Vera James House elderly care homes, and arranged for Father Christmas to visit with a gift for each resident. Sherry and wine was served and The Isle Singers came providing festive music for carols. The residents enjoyed the evenings very much. We then helped the younger people by having Breakfast with Santa at The Almonry Ely for 3 mornings in the run up to Christmas. Over 220 young people and their parents enjoyed a cooked breakfast and each child had a present from Santa.

The programme will feature choral pieces in a wide range of musical styles, but will have a particular focus on new settings of Shakespeare’s texts, which have been specially written by a number of different composers to mark the 400th anniversary of his death this year. In addition to the choral items, the concert will also include recorder solos played by Olivia Petryszak. Olivia is a member of the prestigious Aldeburgh Young Musicians scheme, and is a past winner of Cambridge Young Musician of the Year.

The Princess of Wales Minor Injuries Unit The Minor Injuries Unit at Princess of Wales Hospital, Ely, is one of three units run by Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust - the other units are located at Doddington Hospital and North Cambs Hospital,Wisbech. The unit in Ely opens 8am-6pm, and is now open 7 days a week. It is staffed by Advanced Nurse Practitioners who have extended skills in both minor injury and illness. The Registered Nurses have backgrounds in both accident and emergency nursing and primary care and are supported by skilled health care assistants and administrative staff. They are committed to providing care in the community and, where possible, avoiding hospital admissions. As the title suggests they are able to diagnose and treat a large number of minor injuries, without sending people to a larger hospital, typically the A&E department of Addenbrookes. I fell on Thursday and my daughter in law took me straight to minor injuries dept as I live in Ely. I was seen immediately and x-rayed straight away and my broken wrist was plastered and I was home again within 2 hours. Thankyou so much to staff and the rest of the team inc radiographer who was gentle on painful arm, for fantastic prompt and caring assistance, it was brilliant. They are also able to treat many minor illnesses such as sore throats, earaches, cold symptoms and other infections and have access to equipment to examine eyes and can order x-rays. If needed they can refer to out patient clinics or specialists for further advice and treament, but in many cases patients are treated on-site. Working closely with local GP’s the minor injuries uhit tries to ensure that people in Ely and surrounding villages are able to access appropriate health care and treatment locally as they need it, and work alongside the Out-of-Hours GP service at weekends. I attended the Minor Injuries Unit this morning with a problem with my ear & was expecting some kind of wait but before I’d even finished checking in the nurse was calling me through. The nurse looked in my ear discovered what the problem was & gave me advice on how to treat it. It’s the first time I’ve visited & am thoroughly impressed, would highly recommend it to any body.

They can also refer you to the Joint Emergency Teams and other community staff such as physiotherapists and Falls specialist Nurses who can continue care and rehabilitation at home. Although not an A&E department they can provide care and first line treatment in emergency situations whilst waiting for a 999 ambulance to arrive. If in any doubt about where to go for treatment, try ringing 111 for health advice or pop in. Normally our waiting times are short and parking is free! You can expect a smile and the best care and advice from our staff.
