AND IT’S HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM HER!

Well, aren’t we in a festive mood here at the Elyi Magazine! Happy New Year!

The closing date is just in time for you to give it to your loved one for Valentines…ahhh.

We have some cracking features for you this month. Lis Every has been a busy Mayor again and spent the end of 2015 out and about supporting numerous events, both for charities and local business. Thank you, Lis for all the hard work you put into promoting Ely!

On a personal note, I am very pleased to recommend supporting the 250th Anniversary year appeal for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust. Page 34. It’s no secret, I am not a marathon runner, but this is one cause that could possibly have a chance of getting me into lycra! For us it has been a second home in 2015 due to my husband’s stay of 11 months after a stroke. It truly is an outstanding place and the extra funding that ACT provide is part of what makes it such a centre for excellence.

We have resisted labouring the New Year, New You! cliché too much and instead have articles from local groups that you might like to get involved in or support in 2016. We also celebrate another Fenland success story by taking a look at ‘Corkers Crisps’ on page 19. East Anglia is not called ‘The Garden of England’ for nothing and, like Fenland Celery in our last issue, we love it that Corkers are flying the flag for the agricultural Fens with such style and panache. Thank you to our guest writers again this month. Matt Harvey gets all spooky and tells us about the Addams family show at the ADC in Cambridge. If you go on the website there and you can watch a great trailer of the show. It looks amazing. Tony Winchester gives us another insight into the Point to Point in Cottenham and our very own Poet Laureate, Jonathan Totman tells us how poetry is alive and well in the Fens. The applications need to be in for the 2016/7 term. Could it be you? Madeleine took herself off to Woodfen Lodge for a bit of pampering in November and sampled one of the wonderful spa packages there (see page 31). We will be running a competition in February to win a complimentary package so watch this space.

Please do keep all your group info coming in. Please use us! We have this fantastic team of distributors that get 10,000 magazines out to Ely and the surrounding villages and so if you have something going on tell us and we will do our best to help you publicise it. I must tell you it is very hard work putting this magazine together, but what I love is the thought of someone moving into Ely and, during their first month in their new home, this little mag pops through the door. They start thumbing through and think... “wow! What a lot going on in Ely, what great businesses and services and ooooh…. I always wanted to learn to tango / knit / paint”... and all of a sudden they belong to and feel part of this great community that is Ely.

Bridget

Elisabeth Every, Mayor of Ely My very best wishes for the New Year. I hope you enjoyed your Christmas festivities and are now ready to face 2016. The last month has very much been involved with sharing events with young people, supporting local artists and a lot of carol singing. It was great to see all the young people on the 5K run in aid of Arthur Rank Hospice Charity when they joined 400 keen runners first thing on a brisk Sunday morning.

(by her mentor) to a Level 4 Accounting Apprenticeship at the Ely Tax and Accountancy. They opened their new offices on Broad Street last month and we wish them all every success. Arts and music development is really popular in Ely and with the opening of the Babylon Arts, the new, extremely attractive, space is attracting art and educational exhibitions to the area. With their programmes and the ones at the Maltings, no one can complain that we do not have enough choice – there is something for everyone!

The Christingle Service at the Cathedral organised by the Children’s Society brought its usual magic and, as always, was the real start to Christmas. It was a lovely occasion Engaging with the public is really important for seeing the children with the City of Ely Council and the new their Christingles lit, in the Community Panel meeting held in shadow of the enormous October heralded the start of our Christmas tree, hearing strategy to reach local people and them singing ‘Away in a hear their views. n o i t a r b e l e Triple C in Ely!

Val Lloyd and David Bryan of Ely Tax and Accountancy recently moved their business to 76 Broad Street Ely. It was a cause for a triple celebration. Previously located on St Mary’s Street, they feel the move to Broad Street will be of great benefit to their clients. David says, “Our office is much improved for visitors. Many locals will enjoy the walk to the office as it sits between Cherry Hill Park and Jubilee Gardens. Our more spacious facilities include a meeting room for client meetings and ample office space.”

11 The move was celebrated on the business’s 3rd birthday. “We wanted clients and other businesses to come to an informal gathering and when we realised the date was available it was just too good an opportunity to miss. Over 35 people attended the event. We realised that even though we have significantly more room now, getting so many people in was going to be a squeeze. Everyone was good natured about it all and seemed to have a great time. We were delighted that our good friend Mayor, Lis Every, whom we know through her work with Ely Chambers of Commerce and her support at Ely College agreed to officially open the office.”

The final part of the celebration was due to the recent appointment of an apprentice, Danielle Smith. Val had been her mentor at Ely College which developed into part-time work and then into the apprenticeship. Val said “We are delighted with how Danielle has settled into our business and is already making a significant contribution” If you pop into Ely Tax and Accountancy you will be assured of a warm welcome and they will be happy to discuss any Accountancy needs you may have -proud to be running a local business in Ely!

Have you considered being a school Governor? Are you interested in education and how schools work? Would you like to make a positive difference to the life chances of children? Do you want to share your skills to make that difference? Would you enjoy being part of a team that provides critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards? If you can say ‘yes’ to all of these, consider investigating the role and putting yourself forward as a governor at Ely St John’s Community Primary School. Being a governor is a real commitment, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It requires regular attendance at formal meetings, which are usually in the evening, although getting to know the school well requires some planned time in school during the day. The best way to find out about the role and why people do it is to talk to someone who is already a governor. You may be surprised how

many of your acquaintances have this experience. You could also contact Miss Liz Bassett, the head teacher, who will be only too happy to talk to you. Schools look for a variety of experience and skills across their governing body, but may well also be seeking specific skills, eg finance or business. Training is important for all governors and is readily available. We are currently looking for three co-opted Governors who may well represent different areas of the community. These will be selected by our governing body. Does the role interest you? Do you want to find out more information? If so, take the first step and contact us on office@elystjohns.cambs. sch.uk and express your interest. We will be pleased to talk to you and we will send you all the information you need to make the decision whether to apply.

Residents Help Resettlement of Refugees in Ely People across Ely are coming together to help Syrian refugees who are looking for sanctuary in the city.

“We believe we should stand united with people who are taking huge risks and leaving everything behind for the hope of a better life.”

Community groups, individuals and faith leaders have pledged their support for the Ely Refugee Resettlement Campaign (ERRC).

If you would like to help, or find out more about the campaign, find ERRC online at www.elyrefugeeresettlement.co.uk, on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/ElyRefugeeResettlementCampaign or contact the group by email at elyrefugeescampaign@gmail.com

ERRC is a voluntary organisation made up of people who live and work in Ely and believe that everyone is entitled to basic human rights, including the right to asylum. The group aims to help members of the public coordinate support for 50 refugees in Ely, and to volunteer skills, accommodation and other resources to welcome refugees to the city. Ely resident Poppy Pearce started the group in September. She said, “So far people have pledged English lessons, help with accommodation and befriending people when they join us in the community. “All refugees that are going to be resettled in the UK are vetted twice with stringent checks.

19 This January, not only is Corkers launching a brand new look and feel, but expanding its vegetable crisp offering with the addition of two brand new tasty variants. Parsnip Honey & Black Pepper and Sweet Potato & Chilli will join the existing Mixed Vegetable with a sprinkle of sea salt, and are available in 40g and 125g packs. Quintessentially British, Corkers crisps are made from delicious Naturalo potatoes and root vegetables, grown in the rich Fenland soils of Cambridgeshire and hand cooked to perfection, giving the crisps a unique crunch. The new branding aims to bring the personality to the fore and standout on shelf using iconic British imagery and bold bright colours. The brand now sells eight bold and British flavours, each featuring top quality, all-natural ingredients and cooked in fresh sunflower oil: Cheddar Cheese & Chive, Duck &Hoisin Sauce, Sea Salt & Black Pepper, Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar and Pork Sausage & English Mustard as well as the new vegetable crisp range.

Visit: corkerscrisps.co.uk or find us on twitter: @CorkersCrisps

Best friends Ross Taylor and Rod Garnham founded Corkers in 2010, diversifying the family farm from potatoes to handcooked crisps. Drawing on years of family experience and with their unique potato variety, they set about creating the ultimate, non-greasy crisp with a natural crunch. Ross Taylor, director says, “Our family have been farming potatoes since the 1800s, but it was actually on the ski slopes five years ago, alongside my best friend Rod, that the idea for Corkers was born. We haven’t looked back since, securing listings everywhere from the National Trust to Waitrose, receiving a plethora of Great Taste Awards, the accolade of Potato Grower of the Year 2015 and we even have a couple of Guinness World Records to boot! For us, Corkers is a celebration of the quirks, tastes and traditions that make Britain so great.”

The Queen’s Shoes

Beth and Clare Ashmeade made the move to Ely with their shop, The Queen’s Shoes, just over 10 months ago and are thrilled with the success of the business so far. ‘We are delighted with how things have gone since coming to Ely” says Beth, “We have four lovely windows in which to show you our lovely stock. The shop is in a great spot too as we overlook Broad Street car park at the bottom of Fore Hill and you can find us next to Moore Hair Company and Fenland Physio.” When you talk to Clare and Beth about shoes their enthusiasm and passion for the business is so evident. It is clearly a labour of love sourcing stock for the shop. There is something at The Queen’s Shoes for all ages and tastes and they pride themselves in the level of customer service they provide. If you don’t see what you want they may be able to source it for you, you just have to ask. They are open 9:30am - 5:30pm Tuesday – Saturday and, of course, January is sale month! Prices start from £29 for both boots and Shoes and there are plenty of bargains to be had. “We are now stocking the fabulous Rainbow Club Shoes, Bags and Shoe Clips. This range enables you to first choose your shoe style from

a selection of over 90 styles. Flats, Heels and Wedges and everything inbetween in satin, lace or sparkle and then the shoes are dyed to the exact colour you desire. It’s great for getting a unique pair of shoes to match a special outfit but it’s also great fun!” says Clare. This dynamic Mother and daughter team source the beautiful bright Italian leather handbags in their shop personally from Florence so if you would like a particular colour or style you only have to ask and they will do their best to find what you are looking for. Any excuse for a little Italian trip! Their stockist include; Vitti Love, Chatham Marine, Moshulu, Ana Roman, Felemi, Hellar, Butterfly Twists, Maruti, Cefalu and The Rainbow Club. At the Queen’s Shoes you find a shop with an established and growing reputation for quality, colour and something completely different – also a level of service and knowledge that you only find in Ely’s quality independent shops. Pop into the shop this January and you will receive a warm welcome. There’s even a gentlemen’s corner to keep your other half entertained while you pick up a bargain.

Poetry is thriving in the Fens! In March of last year I won the title of Fenland Poet Laureate. The scheme sees the winner of an annual poetry competition granted the title for one year, along with support and encouragement to promote poetry and literature across the region. I’m the fourth in a line of Fenland Poet Laureates, each of whom has done fantastic things for Fenland Poetry and helped to create a real community of writers. Thanks to my predecessors, we have a thriving poetry and spoken-word open-mic night, Fen Speak, which takes place every third Wednesday of the month and alternates between venues in Ely (The Babylon Gallery) and Wisbech (The Wisbech & Fenland Museum). It’s a chance for writers to share their work in a friendly, supportive environment, and we always have a terrific range of voices and styles. Last summer the Fen Speak team also ran a series of creative writing workshops in towns and villages across the Fens; something we hope to build on this year. This year, one of my projects has been the creation of a new literary magazine, The

Fenland Reed, which I edit together with my partner and fellow poet, Mary Livingstone. We launched the first issue back in the autumn and we were thrilled with the number and quality of submissions we received. Whilst not limiting the magazine geographically, it naturally has a regional angle and our first issue features a number of local writers. We have some real literary talent in and around Ely, which Mary and I feel incredibly (unjustifiably!)

proud to be showing off. See www.thefenlandreed.co.uk for details of how to submit or subscribe. Keep an eye on the Fen Speak website, www.atelier-east. co.uk, for news of upcoming opportunities, including details of how to be in with a chance of becoming the next Fenland Poet Laureate – the competition deadline is the end of January! Jonathan Totman www.jonathantotman.co.uk

An Ely-inspired poem, written shortly after moving here: Fenland Smell of smoke in the fens where she walks at night between the river and the railway line. Barges sleep beneath a line of lamp-lit willows. Beyond, the town gives way to marsh and reed. Her breath catches on the cold like wool on barbed wire. From under her hood, she takes in the nakedness of water, smooth as the top of the Marmite in a newly opened jar. She is drawn here. As if the folds of the earth shook her out and tumbled her down to where she might walk and run and know that falling’s not so bad. Something inside her flattens, flies distances on the rattle of trains and the ripple of swans, floats in the hush of the night. Fenland was shortlisted in the 2014 Holland Park Press "What's Your Place?" competition and first published on their website.

Copies of The Fenland Reed are available at Toppings, Burrows and online at: www.thefenlandreed.co.uk

Tranquility in the Fens As you approach Wood Fen Lodge on the Black Bank Road between Littleport and Little Downham, you appreciate the remoteness and immediately feel the advantage of a day’s retreat in The Fens. Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by Yvonne, the owner and our host for the day. We had booked the ‘Balance’ package. We arrived at 10.00am, filled out our health questionnaire over a coffee and chose our lunch from an extensive, well thought-out menu. We proceeded to the spa area, shortly followed by a dip in the hot tub. There was something quite magical about a windy autumn day that was unusually warm.

Gift Vouchers Available open Tues-Sat

As we sat in the hot tub with our glass of mulled wine, we began to relax and enjoy the unique experience that this quiet location offered us. We alternated between the sauna, steam room and hot tub. The spa area was contemporarily themed in contrast to the dining area which had a more homely feel, complete with log burner. Sadly on this particular day, it was too warm to be lit! The whole place was spotless with everything in place that we would need, including a button which when pressed magically met our refreshment needs, promptly delivered by Pam. Fully licenced, our inclusive home-cooked lunch was well presented, tasty and plentiful. It was washed down with a glass of white Chardonnay which certainly enhanced the flavours of the moussaka and home reared sausage casserole served with the most delicious potatoes, probably grown in site of the hot tub! Home cooked spiced apple cake followed which met the expectation set by the first course.

After lunch came our scheduled treatments which were carried out by a very professional and perceptive therapist and our relaxed Saturday afternoon ‘after lunch feeling’ just got better and better... Wood Fen Lodge provided the perfect ambience to relax and simply enjoy our treatments which included a neck, back and shoulder massage. Just perfect for destressing those tired muscles. The Spa Package also included a Dermalogica express facial. Our skin was given the winter treat it deserved and our facial left our appearance looking bright, vibrant and refreshed. We left feeling relaxed, pampered and very happy just to ‘be’. A perfect way to spend a Saturday after the madness of a busy working week! Full information about spa days, booking and tailoring a bespoke package go to www.woodfenlodge.co.uk or call Yvonne on 01353 862495

250 Years of Saving Lives 2016 is a special year for Addenbrooke’s Hospital as it marks 250 years since it first opened its doors on Trumpington Street, Cambridge in 1766. The hospital was established thanks to a gift of £4,676 left by Dr John Addenbrooke in his Will to “hire and fit up, purchase or erect a small, physical hospital in the town of Cambridge for poor people.” Jo Elliott, communications manager at ACT said: “We work closely with doctors and nurses to ensure that money raised is spent wisely on equipment, specialist staff, innovative services and research to help NHS funds go that bit further.

Today, Addenbrooke’s is still our local hospital, touching our lives and those of our families and friends. It is where we have our babies, repair broken limbs, fight diseases and face the challenges of old age. Whatever brings us through the hospital’s doors, it is a comfort to know that outstanding care is at hand when it really counts. That is why Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT), the only dedicated charity for Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, continues to support John Addenbrooke’s generous legacy of charitable giving. To mark this momentous milestone year, ACT has launched the Addenbrooke’s 250 Appeal to raise £250,000 to help make a difference for patients across Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie. Money raised from this appeal will help ACT respond quickly to provide funds for wards, clinics and research teams, helping patients where the need is greatest. Types of projects that the appeal could support include producing information packs for breast cancer patients, providing additional portable breathing machines for terminally ill patients and funding research to identify patients at risk of developing gastric or oesophageal cancers.

“Our aim to raise £250,000 through the Addenbrooke’s 250 Appeal is in addition to our normal fundraising targets for specific services. We hope the public will warmly respond to the appeal so we can do even more for patients in this special anniversary year.” If you would like to fundraise or make a donation towards the Addenbrooke’s 250 Appeal please contact ACT for more information on 01223 217757, email hello@act4addenbrookes.org.uk or go to www.act4addenbrookes.org.uk

They’re under starter’s orders....They’re off! ...and with those few words the 2015/16 Point-to-Point season got under way at Cottenham on Sunday 29th November. Sadly the expected appearance of Victoria Pendleton did not materialise as she chose to run at a meeting in Devon but we are sure that soon she’ll be riding in our area. Despite this the racing was of the highest standard and seemingly the crowd went home happy. The meeting began with a two and a half mile race which was certainly fast, and furious. Sam Waley-Cohen, fresh from his fall in the Hennessey on Saturday, rode the favourite Storm Lantern but had to play second fiddle

to Sam Davies–Thomas riding Lough Inch who won with a bit in hand. Davies–Thomas went on to ride a double later in the day on Tulsa, which, after looking beaten with one to go, got back up to overhaul favourite Sin Bin ridden by last year’s champion Lady Rider Gina Andrews. Both winning horses were trained by Tommy Morgan who has a yard in Leicestershire. Accolade of the day went to veteran rider Angela Rucker who landed a thrilling Ladies Open Race by a neck from the all conquering Penmore Mill ridden by top rider Hannah Watson.

Photo: Graham Bishop www.gdbphotography.co.uk

Sam Waley-Cohen on Storm Lantern

Penmore Mill was cruising coming into the home turn but Rucker knows her horse well and brought him with a perfect run, flying the last fence, to gain victory on the line. What made this an even more amazing achievement was that this was the fourth year in a row that the pair, who come from Droitwich in Worcestershire, had gained success in this race. By the time of the next Elyi the second meeting at Cottenham will be behind us so hopefully there will be more news in February’s edition of the Elyi. Tony Winchester

18th Jan - Jonathan Rogers The Sculptures of the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral The early 14th century sculptures of the Lady Chapel were intended to be a definitive statement of what a devotee of the Blessed Virgin Mary should know. They were badly damaged during the 1540s in attacks on the images and practices of traditional religion. They were covered with thick whitewash for over three hundred years while the Chapel was in use as a parish church. Campaigns of cleaning, repair and conservation since the 1850s have restored the sculptures to our sight but not necessarily to our understanding: their mutilated state makes it difficult to read and appreciate them, the non-scriptural narratives that they illustrate are quite unfamiliar to many people. Even today they can be an uneasy reminder of England’s Catholic past and of its violent end. The talk will identify of some of the sculptures and describe how the tide turned from condemnation to conservation. It is based in the speaker’s book, “Ely Cathedral: The Sculptures of the Lady Chapel” published in 2015 by The Ely Society. Talks are at 8.00 pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Ely. Entry is via the gate at the rear of St Mary’s Street Car Park, Ely ADMISSION: Visitors £2.50 – Members free. See our web site: www.elyarchaeology.org.uk or phone 01353 669326

Coming up…Ely & The Performing Arts January 2016 A little look at some local, home-grown shows in the area. Matt Harvey, Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre Now Christmas is over, what better way to fill the dark winter nights than with theatre’s darkest family – the Addams! Wilburton Theatre Group first brought musical comedy The Addams Family to the stage in May 2015. The show was so well received that Cambridge Theatre Company decided to pick up the musical, and it’s cast, and transfer the show to Cambridge. The show performs 5th – 9th January 2016 at the ADC Theatre. The musical is packed full of songs as the story depicts the ghoulish antics of the American family with an affinity for all things macabre. Sam Gallop, who plays Morticia, tells us about being in the show: “We were all so excited when we heard that The Addams Family was transferring to Cambridge. We had an amazing time performing it in Wilburton and to get another chance to play this wonderful character again was fantastic. We have an amazing choreographer, David Mallabone, who is working tirelessly with us on some incredible dance numbers. I get to try my hand at authentic Argentinian Tango! David and Emily (our Director) are working with us all to develop our parts even further, so that every single movement we make is true to our character. Morticia is a joy to play. She is sexy, sassy and gets to sing some great show stopping numbers. I can honestly say that I am loving every single second!”

The musical is based on characters created by Charles Addams, with music and lyrics by Andrew Lippa. The show runs from Tuesday 5th to Saturday 9th January 2016 at the ADC Theatre in Cambridge. Tickets are £14/£11. Call the box office on 01223 300085 or visit adctheatre.com.

Littleport Lions Club We believe that the world gets better and problems get smaller when people unite to serve their local and global community. Lions help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy. Since 1917, Lions have strengthened communities through humanitarian projects and hands-on service. We serve neighbours who live next door and people on the other side of the world that we may never meet. International Disasters are responded to via The Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) where finance and other help is forwarded to Lions on the spot to help. Lions are trying to stock pile supplies for water purification systems so that we do not need to wait before responding in future, any help you can give most welcome.

Lions support Water Aid organisation Lions clubs are working in partnership with WaterAid to deliver taps and toilets, campaign for change, build the skills of local people and transform skills. Lions Water Aid sends money to the Water Aid organisation. As we approach the 150 year anniversary of the UK’s first modern sewer system, which transformed our cities and helped eliminate diseases like cholera, we are helping the “Third World” to eradicate this disease and others that threaten their health and lives. Two members of Littleport Lions club have been to India and saw how water pumps can transform rural villages.
