Making a Comeback W

elcome to the July/Aug pilot issue of the new Elyi Magazine. If you think you remember the Elyi from some time ago, you would be right. I published a similar A5 magazine, monthly in 2006/7. Older, wiser and technologically updated I am now re-launching the Elyi. I am hoping you will join me and get involved by advertising your business or service and sending in news and information about local groups you belong to. As you can see this has already started.

T

he aim isn’t to provide up to the minute news, our local newspapers and online media do a good job of that - rather a resource that is referred to repeatedly with useful local dates and contacts. This first mag is to give you a taste of what goes on in and around Ely as well as highlighting some of the great local businesses that serve our city. With your help, the magazine will build from this small beginning into a really useful resource for both old Elysians and newcomers to the City.

D

elivering 9000 magazines is a lot of walking! So, I will be looking for some able-bodied and reliable people to join the team. If you are interested please do get in touch. (see advert next page)

C

lub and Society news is welcome so if you need new members or publicity for an event then send in info, but you will have to plan ahead as the available space is allocated on first come first served basis. Your deadline for the next issue is 15th August.

T

he magazine will only exist because of the financial support from advertisers so please support them in return by using them and when responding to an advert tell them you saw them here!

Welcomes

It is great to welcome the birth of the Elyi magazine – well done Bridget! As newcomers to Ely – many people said to Debbie and I that it would be at least twenty years before we felt welcome in Ely. But that has NOT been the case. We have found Ely to be the most welcoming City and already feel that this is home. So I’m sure Elyi will get a similar great welcome. Bishop Stephen, when he welcomed me into his home Bishop Stephen for my interview, welcomes Chris and family to Ely. about this time last year, asked me to be sure that St Mary’s welcomes everyone – which I am, of course, very glad to do. Jesus says “come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest,” more than welcoming us Jesus is running towards us, with open arms, wanting to welcome us back into his family.

So do feel welcome to pop into St Mary’s at 10:30 any Sunday morning (or 9:00 if you prefer something a bit more trad) and hear about the part Jesus can play in our lives if we unearth our Spiritual dimension, welcome Him into our lives and start to apply our faith to work, life, parenting, marriage, stress etc. If you want to debate any of this with me – I’d welcome that – stop me in the street. (I’m often around wearing a blue shirt and dog collar) or email me on:

revchill@stmarysely.org

There are other great Christian Churches in Ely – and I know from experience that you will be welcome at all of the gatherings across the City. Yours,

Chris Hill

e are the City of Ely Military Band. The ‘military’ in our title is because our instrumentation includes woodwind as well as brass instruments. The Band was formed in 1962 under the direction of ex-Royal Marine Bandmaster Mr. Eric Peters. His experience influenced the structure of the band which is still carried on today by our Bandmaster Phil Green, who was taught clarinet by Eric. The Band celebrated 50 years of making music in 2012, and for the occasion we looked into the band history and the old documents. We found the following… “the objects of the band shall be to carry on the business of a band for promoting a knowledge of music and entertainment for its members and the general public.”

This is what we still represent, the entertaining of the public through the enjoyment of its members. We currently have over 50 members and new players

are always welcome. We undertake 20 or more engagements most years. Our Bandmaster tailors our concerts to the occasion and although we are an amateur, civilian band we like to play marches, giving a military feel, overtures for those who like classical music, music from the musicals, theatre and film to stir memories and light easy listening pieces and pop classics. In 2014 we have specially orchestrated WWI Marches and Songs as these will be needed at many of our engagements this year.

01353 721782. Younger members are welcome (12+), you need to be able to follow the music even if you can’t play every note, this is the ideal place to come and build your musical skills, and gain a hobby for life.

Teatime

N estled down by the river in Ely is the beautiful and quite unique Peacocks Tearoom. If you are new to Ely and haven’t visited yet then you have a rare treat in store. As you enter, you will be met by an unmistakably English aroma; freshly baked scones, simmering beef stew, buttered toast. However, it’s the tea that truly takes centre-stage at Peacocks. With over 80 varieties to try, ranging from the comforting and familiar Assam and Builders, to the exotic (and literary!) Bengal Tiger and Sherlock Holmes, you might have to visit more than once!

In this little haven of Englishness, the owners, Rachel and George have created something very special indeed by combining good food and drink in beautiful surroundings together with an eye for detail and good humour, immediately evident if you take the time to read the witty small print in the menu. It’s obviously a winning formula, as Peacocks rates consistently highly on review sites such as Trip Advisor and has frequently featured in the national press as one of the top places to take tea. This accolade was won officially back in 2007 when, shortly after opening, Peacocks was named the Tea Guild’s ‘Top Tea Place’. When I congratulated George at the time his typically whimsical quip in reply was, “ Well its all down hill from here...”. Of course this couldn’t have been further from the truth as the tearoom has continued to expand, opening up more of the house downstairs due to the regular stream of visitors that come from far and wide. It is a common sight to see discerning Cambridge dwellers dismounting from bicycles having pedalled the 13 miles along the river for the sole purpose of taking tea at Peacocks. However, it must be noted that many make their way home by train, too plumply satisfied from a Full Monty to even consider further pedal-power.

13 By the way, for a Full Monty, think the teatime equivalent of a ‘full English breakfast’: a selection of freshly made sandwiches, warm, moist, fruit scones with a choice of delicious jam and a slice of cake...mmmmm! Last year, Rachel & George moved from ‘living over the shop’ and rooms were made ready for the opening of Peacocks Fine B&B. It’s no surprise that the attention to detail, comfort and style so characteristic of the rooms below continues upstairs. Certainly a place to recommend to friends visiting the city. At our in-store information point customers can view independent reviews on over 1200 dog foods listed on the website at: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk

Along with the other foods we have, we are very proud to stock all the 5 star rated foods listed on the site” ...Lionel, Jurassic Bark founder.

News from St. Mary’s C of E Junior School Thanks to Olympic Legacy Sports Funding and some creative thinking between St. Mary’s school and the Ely Sailing Club, a year group of ninety Year 6 pupils learnt to sail this term. Weather conditions were very fair over the three week period when small groups of children sauntered down with staff and volunteer parents to the Sailing club at Roswell Pits for some expert sailing instruction from RYA-qualified club members. Within a day nearly all of the children were sailing solo with confidence and evident glee on their faces. It was a joy to behold! Many-a-pupil capsized, but this is all part of the fun, and thanks to all the excellent instruction and health and safety measures, children were quickly able to right their craft and sail on regardless! Each child enjoyed two days of sailing, and most achieved the Royal Yachting Associations Stage 1 sailing certificate. An added bonus for the children is membership of the Ely Sailing Club for this season’s sailing, allowing adult-accompanied children the possibility of an afternoon or evening’s sailing in one of the club’s boats for only £5 a time!

Our thanks to Clare Christan and all the club’s staff and volunteers for a fantastic experience enjoyed by all. Ely Sailing Club is based at Roswell Pits in Ely, Cambridgeshire. They have over 40 acres of attractive fresh water with islands, trees and banks. The sailing is always interesting, challenging and fun. There is dry launching directly from jetties, and crews are able to sail without getting their feet wet. Ely Sailing Club are a recognised Royal Yachting Association training centre and have also been awarded RYA Champion Club status for their race coaching. The club is family orientated and run by its members, for its members, with good value and enjoyment for all.
