Franchise of the Year 2016
WELCOME ...from the EDITORS Dear Readers, It has been hot hot hot! This is our double summer issue for July and August so that the Elyi team can take a well earned rest. We hope you manage to get a break too and that those of you with school age children have a great time all together over the holidays.
EDITORIAL & DESKTOP
As usual we feature some great local businesses and hear more about three in particluar; Projects4Roofing, La Belle Bella Photography and Canama Dance Supplies; all keen to tell us about the great services they offer.
ADVERTISING & ACCOUNT MANAGER
I recently attended the Ely Hero Awards and presented the prize for Neighbour of the Year to Jo Evans from Littleport. It was the finale to weeks of preparation by Naomi Sherwood at Metrorod Cambridge.. Our good friend Luke Smith was also heavily involved in much of the design and organisation of the event. Congratulations to them and everyone involved. You can see some great photos from the night in our centre pages. I hear a rumour that it’s going to be an annual event, so get thinking about the great people you could nominate for next year. Cambridge Open Studios is bigger and better than ever this year with a record 73 artists in 45 studios opening their studios to the public during the first 4 weekends of July in East Cambridgeshire (11am - 6pm). Free guides are now available in shops, cafes, waiting rooms etc. Our ‘Groups and Meets’ section will be back in the September issue so now is your chance to update or just refresh your regular entry. Remember it’s 180 words max, but absolutely free! The deadline is the 10th August. best wishes Bridget & Madeleine

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY
photographs: Mike Rouse You may have noticed on the first Saturday in June that Ely was full of people wearing academic gowns. Each year The Open University holds an afternoon and evening Degree Ceremony in Ely Cathedral. This Ceremony is an opportunity for the graduates to celebrate with their family the culmination of many years of hard work. Pat and I were honoured to be among the invited guests. Since taking office in May I have attended many events, with Pat joining me when she is able, ranging from the Annual General Meeting of Pos+Ability, who I will support in the establishment of Dementia classes, Open Farm Day at G’s followed by a Yoga and Vegan Festival at the Paradise Centre. The evening of Saturday 10th June was particularly poignant as we,together with the Bishop of Huntingdon and many others, lit candles on the Market Square to remember those who were so callously killed and injured in the recent atrocities in London and Manchester. Thank you Mark Cooney of Spotted In Ely for organising this. Our thoughts go out to everyone and I urge people to stay strong and come together as a community.
On Monday 19th June it was my happy duty to compere the first ever Ely Hero Awards at the Maltings. It was one of the hottest evenings of the year so far and even hotter under the lights on the Maltings stage where I was situated for the duration of the ceremony. My heartfelt congratulations to all the nominees and their families and supporters who attended It was such a pleasure to read out the stories behind each nomination and, my goodness, what a weaith of good hearted, generous and brave people we have in the Ely area. I’m pictured here with Jorja Furze who won the ‘Child of Achievement’ category. We have many engagements coming up during the summer and we look forward to making new friends and renewing old friendships. More from me in the September issue. best wishes
Recently ADeC held a cinema screening and training event at the Maltings to make people “Dementia Aware”. Over 35 people attended this event. I would like to thank Caroline Cawley for her support and help in making this City recognise the importance of the awareness of this life changing situation.

HEREWARD ROTARY CLUB PRESENTS CHEQUES TO LOCAL CHARITIES At a special meeting held last week at the Lamb Hotel, the Ely Hereward Rotary Club presented cheques for £1,500 each to two of this year’s chosen charities – the Ely Volunteer Centre and the Cambridge and Ely Child Contact Centre – represented by Lis Every and Will Cowell.
PHOTO: Will Cowell and Lis Every with the Ely Hereward Club President Frank Connolly
A cheque for the Ely Schools Partnership was also given to Lis to pay the transport costs for thirty young children from five local primary schools, all of whom are from disadvantaged backgrounds and show academic promise with a positive attitude to learning, to enable them to visit to St John’s College Cambridge in June. As part of this day, the children, currently in Year 5 and 6, will tour the College and participate in a DNA workshop. For more information about the Ely Hereward Rotary Club, please visit http://rotaryclubelyhereward.org or on Facebook.
ELY CHORAL SOCIETY, ELY SINFONIA AND ELY CONSORT PRESENTS A FITTING MUSIC FEAST TO CLOSE FESTIVAL For the final, glorious concert in the 2017 Isle of Ely Arts Festival, Ely Choral Society, Ely Consort and Ely Sinfonia join forces to perform a concert that truly evokes the magic and mystery of the Fens and Ely Cathedral. The concert starts with "In the Fen Country", Vaughan Williams's magical portrayal of the bleak landscape and wide open spaces of the East Anglian Fens. Vaughan Williams knew the Fens well, first as a student at Cambridge University and then as a collector of English folk songs. What more fitting place than Ely Cathedral for Beethoven's "Symphony no 9 in D minor". The first ever major choral symphony, it is one of the bestknown works in the classical music repertoire and will sound stunning in the extraordinary acoustic of the Fens' own cathedral. Finally, we are proud to be giving the world première of Andrew Parnell’s "Fenland Images". Reflecting this year’s Isle of Ely Festival theme of “The Fens” and based on poems by local writers, it illustrates a modern-day agricultural scene, the timeless daily round of worship in St Etheldreda’s monastery and the shadowy characters who once inhabited the Fens. (see page 47 for poster) 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
With Peyee Chen (Soprano) Freya Jacklin (Mezzo Soprano), Michael Solomon Williams (Tenor) and Laurence Williams (Bass-Baritone). Conductors Steve Bingham and Andrew Parnell. Tickets cost £25/20/£15 (reserved), £8 (unreserved) and £5 for under 18s. They are available from Ely Cathedral Box Office (Tel 01353 660349), email box.office@elycathedral.org https://tickets.elycathedral.org/ Ely Cathedral, Chapter House, The College, Ely CB7 4DL

Companionship through keeping people company and giving them time to talk freely over a cuppa is a worthwhile way of giving something back, but would also enable you to gain something for yourself such as learning a new skill or having help around your house or garden. THE WILDLIFE WATCH HEDGEHOG AWARD Wildlife Watch Ely Branch Four year old Rufus Minnett has become the youngest ever member of Ely Wildlife Watch to win The Wildlife Trust's "Hedgehog Award". Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of The Wildlife Trust. The Ely group is open to all children up to the age of 12 and meets once a month in and around Pocket Park and Roswell Pits exploring a different wildlife theme each month.
Ely Wildlife Watch leader, Jo Evans, said: "We are so proud of Rufus and his excitement for wildlife; he's definitely a budding nature enthusiast! The Wildlife Trust Hedgehog Awards give children the opportunity to engage with the natural world in a fun way through learning, making, thinking and doing. It’s great that Rufus has completed the wildlife challenges at such a young age”.
The next event is Mini Beast Hunting on July 15th 2pm-4pm, meet at Fisherman’s car park, all welcome.
The Wildlife Watch Hedgehog Award encourages children to explore nature in different ways by taking on a series of challenges. These include building an insect habitat, growing flowers for bees and butterflies, attending Wildlife Watch events or making a model of a favourite wild animal. By completing eight of these different wildlife activities, Rufus was awarded his certificate and badge at Ely Wildlife Watch's pond dipping event this month.
For more information on forthcoming Ely Wildlife Watch events, follow the Ely Wildlife Watch group on Facebook or call Clive Baker on 01353 610224.

LAWNMOWER CARE TIPS FROM FENLAND SPIRIT SERVICES
Fenland Spirit Services Lawnmower Sales, Servicing & Repairs
Tips for summer lawnmowing Set the height of your mower higher for the first few cuts. Only take 1/3 of the length of grass, lowering the height over the weeks until it’s at your desired level, try not to cut so low that you scrap the ground.
Ensure the mower blade is sharp, a dull blade rips the grass rather than giving a clean cut. Get the blade sharpened at least once per year.
Servicing from £45 Petrol lawnmowers and garden machinery fully serviced by a qualified engineer Blade sharpening, collection available Refurbished mowers sold
Clean grass out from under your mower, ensure it is turned off before lowering the handles to the ground in order to remove grass from the underside. Some mowers have a hose attachment including many ride on mowers, this is to assist in cleaning under the deck. Hold off mowing the grass when it is wet. If you’re at work during the week it can seem unavoidable. Wet grass doesn’t cut well and balls up under the mower making it harder to cut. It also sticks to the underside of the mower giving you more work to clean it out. If your lawnmower or ride on mower develops a problem, get in touch with Fenland Spirit Services sooner rather than later, it may need a service or belts, bearings or other TLC, we could save you money in the long run.

700 Attendees Make Cambridgeshire's Firstever Yoga and Vegan Festival a Huge Success June 11th didn't look anything like a usual lazy Sunday morning in Ely. Hundreds of people, armed with their Yoga gear, were seen flocking to the Paradise Centre in Ely. At 9 am, before the doors opened for Cambridgeshire Yoga and Vegan Festival, a long queue was formed by Yoga enthusiasts who couldn't wait to stretch their bodies. The car park was full and the famous leisure centre had turned into a Yoga University. As the day progressed, over 700 people (including children) took part in 50 different Yoga and meditation classes conducted by 30 teachers. People travelled from miles away for the festival which boasted of 60 stalls, live spiritual music, talks and workshops besides Yoga classes. The event was fully sold out and the venue got so full at some point that the entry was stopped for a little while. Bollywood Dancing, led by Kriti Sachdeva, added an additional element of fun to the festival. 100 people took part in Bollywood dancing alone! The vegan food served at the festival was liked by everyone. Phil, the Norfolk resident and owner of healthy vegan Indian street food stall – Chaat Man, said, “It is only 1pm and I am fully sold out – this usually never happens at other festivals. I will be back again”. As the festival was aimed at raising funds for a variety of charities including Mayor of Ely's charity, the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Ely also visited the festival. “I have never seen so many people in Ely gathered for doing Yoga. The stalls at the festival are fantastic and the event has a strong feel-good vibe to it. I hope to see it becoming even bigger next year”, remarked the Mayor, Richard Hobbs. The event was organized by Yogific, a community organization aimed at raising awareness about Yoga and veganism. Kriti Sachdeva, the founder of Yogific said, “we have organised similar events near London before but the response in Ely has been the best so far. I am amazed to see that people travelled for 150 km just to take part in the festival. I am thankful for the support of the venue, Paradise Centre, hard work of volunteers and the teachers.” All classes were taught by local Yoga teachers who are based in and 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

CANAMA DANCE SUPPLIES As experienced dancers, Caroline and Martin Culverhouse understand the need for the correct shoe and fit. They are always happy to give advice to their customers when choosing the most appropriate dancewear. “My passion for dancing started at a very young age before my teens with Ballroom in our village hall once a week. My very first pair of dancing shoes came when I was told that I would be taking my very first exam and really would be needing ballroom shoes - my very first pair of silver sparkling dance shoes! It was having those shoes that I realized what a difference a pair of proper shoes made to my performance on the dance floor.” says Caroline. Their small, family run business sprang out of the couple’s lifelong passion for dancing. They also are dance teachers and currently run Swing Jive lessons every Thursday Evening at Freckenham Village hall, 8-10pm. (tel: 01638 711255) In their showroom in Mildenhall they stock a wide variety of dance shoes; ballet, tap, jazz, ballroom, jive, and also clothing and accessories, for all your dance needs.
Caroline explains how the shop works, “After selling shoes from home and bringing shoes to events for some time, I recently took on the showroom so I could display our stock for all my local customers. Previously, I had been taking shoes to dance classes and people also came to my home. Now you can arrange to view shoes outside office hours by telephoning for an appointment. There is no obligation to buy and you can try on and browse everything we have as well as getting expert advice about fitting.” Caroline is also very happy to bring along a range of stock to evening or weekend dance classes and schools. She works this round her other 9-5 job. If you would like to book an appointment or to find out more about getting Caroline to visit your dance classes, please call: 01638 711255 / 07886492772

JULY MEANS... CAMBRIDGE OPEN STUDIOS Pos+Ability who provide chair based exercises and one to one personal development programmes for those who have survived a Stroke, including T.I.A.’s, those who are living with Parkinson’s, Multiple sclerosis and other long term neurological illnesses, celebrated their fifth AGM in June. Pushing ahead with opening additional venues every year, Pos+Ability now have two classes in Histon, one in Burwell, one opening next week in Soham, two in Ely and one in Littleport. Ian Lindsay, who has just completed his year as Mayor of Ely presented Linda Neate, the Chairman, with a cheque for £4000 accumulated from many fundraising activities during his year in Office. In her annual report, Linda Neate said that it is the local community that really supports Pos+Ability and without their help it would not be able to provide these unique services for so many people. With around 75 clients registered now, Pos+Ability are always looking for more staff to train and volunteers too. The newly elected Mayor of Ely, Richard Hobbs, was also in attendance and spoke about his passion for supporting Dementia during his mayoral year. Pos+Ability will be working in collaboration with Richard, his team and other interested parties, to deliver sessions to those with the early onset of Dementia. If you would like to learn more about Pos+Ability please take a look at their website: www.posability.org telephone 07565 598 193 or email on posability3@gmail.com 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
As July approaches, frantic preparations are the order of the day for scores of artists taking part in Cambridge Open Studios. This year, over 18 artists and makers are participating in Ely itself, which is a record number. They work in a great variety of disciplines and offer beautiful one-off artworks suitable for all tastes and pockets. This extraordinary event, that has now become a feature of life in the region, had humble enough beginnings. It all started nearly 40 years ago in Cambridge, with 6 painters who had the idea of opening their studios to visitors on agreed weekends during July. There are now some 300 exhibitors, spread all over Cambridgeshire. Information about participants and the works of

art that await you in their respective studios can be gathered from the COS website: www.camopenstudios.co.uk and from the Guide that has been available free of charge since early June from many shops and organisations throughout the county. I am a textile artist based in Ely since 2003. I am taking part this July after a long interruption. I very much look forward to welcoming visitors again in my house/studio in central Ely. I have alway enjoyed this informal opportunity to see old and new friends, talk about and show my work in a less formal setting than the galleries where I normally exhibit. I create medium-sized to large wallhangings which I exhibit and sell internationally. During my open weekends, I will also have smaller framed works on sale, gift items and cards. Something for every one, I hope. When I first arrived in Ely from London in 2003, I knew nobody in the city and I was keen to make local friends, both among fellow artists and members of the public. I was also anxious to give something back to the
place I had made my home. I joined Cambridge Open Studios almost immediately, took part for the first time in 2004 and served on the Committee for several years. This strategy was amply rewarded and over a decade later, I have made many friends here and feel very much at home in this lovely little city of ours. Ely, being compact and with relatively easy parking, is a favourite destination for art lovers who can combine their visit to studios with a look at the splendid Cathedral and perhaps a meal at The Old Fire Engine House Restaurant or tea at Peacocks’ Tearoom. I will be open on the second, third and fourth weekend of July. Hope to see you then and that the weather is on our side, allowing us to enjoy a drink in the garden. PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, is a heartwarming and uplifting tale of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus named Priscilla, and set off from Sydney on the adventure of a life-time, to perform as drag artists at a casino in the heart of the Australian outback. They end up on a journey of self-discovery, finding friendship, acceptance, love and far more than they ever dreamed of. At its heart PRISCILLA is a story about identity, belonging, relationships and family – “a celebration of diversity wrapped up in an extravagant onstage party”, according to Louis Ling, Cambridge Producer. “The story brings a lump to your throat at times,” he adds. “The central storyline is about a gay father reuniting with his son, but it is also a story about three friends who may not be brothers by blood, but who have a strong family bond.” This wildly fresh and funny musical features a hit parade of dance-floor favourites such as ‘It’s raining men’ and ‘I will survive’ that will have audiences dancing in the aisles. The song list includes This spectacular show boasts a glittering array of over 400 outrageous and colourful costumes as well as 100 extraordinary headdresses; there are sequins galore, feathers, faux fur, leather, sparkling spandex, platform boots. In addition, the show is a technical tour de force with big set pieces and 7 metre long customised bus weighing four tonnes turning on stage as the sparkling centrepiece.
