Franchise of the Year 2016

WELCOME ...from the EDITORS Dear Readers, It is with great pleasure that we feature Cllr Richard Hobb’s first article for us as Mayor. We wish him and wife Pat a fun and fulfilling year as they go about their duties on behalf of the city and look forward to hearing about what they get up to each month. The Ely Heroes Awards comes to a climax and as I write we are joining with the rest of the judging panel in sifting through the many nominations that have been sent in all ready for the ceremony on 19th June. Two local groups aiming to provide support and space promoting good mental health in Ely got in touch this month and it is great to hear about the events going on in July. If you run a similar group do let us know and we can get you into our groups and meets section and make Ely people aware of what you do. King’s Ely is the venue for some exciting events coming up. If you fancy a bit of Shakespeare the ‘The Comedy of Errors’ is performed by All the Kings Men on 7th June and as part of the Isle of Ely Arts Festival Scotland’s dynamic professional opera company brings Madame Butterfly to the city on 1st July. There are many other events drawn together in the festival programme which is available all around the city but also online at : http://www.isleofelyartsfestival.org.uk/ Congratulations to Sheila Friend-Smith and her committee for a remarkable job in drawing it all together once again this year - and if that wasn’t enough, the amazing Cathedral Science Festival continues on into June with exciting events for both adults and children: www.elycathedral.org/ ely-cathedral-science-festival Our groups and meets section continues to grow and we are working hard to create more space all the time for charities and nonprofit groups. If you would like to support us, please do recommend the magazine to local businesses. It is a great way to advertise locally as you will see from the lovely testimonials our current businesses are writing. best wishes Bridget & Madeleine

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY As many of you know this is not our first time in the Mayoral role, but experience in the past has proved each year presents different challenges and rewards. As we embark on another year I would like to take this opportunity to pass on our thanks to the past Mayor and Mayoress, Ian and Suzanne. They carried out their duties with such ease and were fine ambassadors for the City. Ian and Suzanne many thanks, you will be a hard act to follow. The role of the Mayor is very much a dual role, first and foremost is to be responsible for the City Council’s administration and to make sure that the residents of the City gain the maximum from their Council Tax. The second role of the Mayor is an ambassador, where the Mayor promotes Ely and supports local organisations, in particular the numerous hard working volunteers who make our fine City “tick”. I am very fortunate to be taking over at a most exciting time in Ely’s history. For, at last, we will see the long awaited bypass opening and the completion of our new leisure village, both will add quality to our lives and prepare us for the expected growth of our City, which will bring its own challenges. My focus and charitable objective will be to support Ely in becoming a dementia aware City. A City where people will be aware of and

44 || Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com

understand dementia, and those with dementia will feel at ease in the City, which should give them choice and control of their day to day life. There are over a 1,000 people living with dementia locally. They either visit regularly or live within the Parish and, sadly this number is expected to rise with an ever increasing ageing population. We need to take action now so I call upon businesses, religious groups, the volunteer sector and all organisations to undertake a small amount of training to make Ely a “DEMENTIA AWARE CITY”. Both Pat and I look forward to renewing old friendships and making new ones as we look forward to this coming year. Richard Hobbs

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION The generosity of the people of Ely and surrounding villages helped to raise in excess of £500, which will be matched by Lloyds Bank’s Charity Match that is open to their staff. The Pedal to Paris and London to Ypres Bike Rides takes place over 4 days from 31 August 2017 and covers a distance totalling 286 miles, whilst the London Ypres covers 290 Miles.

On Saturday 22 April 2017, Dave Martin (Chairman) and Marc Beveridge (Poppy Appeal Organiser) of the City of Ely Branch of the Royal British Legion spent a day at Ely Markets peddling to raise funds for their Pedal to Paris and London to Ypres Bike Rides.

Marc and Dave would like to thank RBL members, The Little Print Shop, The Kings Arms and Lloyds Bank, Ely for their continued support in our fundraising appeals.

Naomi Sherwood, Business Development Manager at MetroRod said:

The team at Ely Hero Awards, organised by MetroRod based in Ely, have had a very exciting and busy month receiving all the wondeful and heart-warming nominations for Ely’s very first Hero Awards! The bulk of entries have been received online through the website, www.elyheroawards.org.uk, designed by Infiniti Graphics, and Sadie Finch VA has been collating all the nominations to pass to the judging panel. The Judges now have the unenviable task of deciding upon the finalists in each category. All of the finalists will be invited to the exclusive award ceremony at The Maltings on 19th June where the winners will be announced, and The Ely Hero will be crowned!

6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

We are absolutely delighted to have received over 110 (and still counting) nominations and we couldn't have done this without the individuals of Ely and surrounding villages. We knew there were lots of amazing people in Ely and the villages and it has been wonderful to receive all of their stories. We would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to all of our sponsors and judges and all of the people who have nominated their heroes. Thank you also to the local businesses in the City who have helped promote the event by displaying posters and cards, and to Leonie who kindly delivered them. The response and excitement for the very first Ely Hero Awards has been overwhelming and we are very much looking forward to the Award Ceremony next month! If you have been nominated and finalised, the judging panel will be contacting you in due course to arrange the next steps of your entry. Good luck to all the nominees! Keep checking the website and social media for updates. www.elyheroawards.org.uk Facebook: /elyheroes • Twitter: @elyheroes

Calling All Parents! We are the national parentled campaign calling for Fair Funding for All Schools

Schools in England are facing the biggest cuts in a generation. The government has broken its election promise to parents. The money following your child into school is going down. This will mean: increased class sizes loss of teaching and support staff fewer subject choices fewer resources and out of school activities In addition, introducing a new school funding formula without the money to deliver it means that all schools are losing out.

As parents we refuse to accept this. No one voted for cuts to our schools.

Recently, Prince Harry spoke openly about the mental health issues he faced following the death of his mother, Princess Diana. Mental health issues are often seen as somewhat of a taboo subject, but the Prince’s revelations have been welcomed as a positive step toward destigmatising mental health issues and have brought about discussions over the lack of services available to people in the UK. We feature two new and inspiring local groups, setting up here in Ely who are committed to improving the emotional and mental well being of local people by providing a variety events and meetings starting in July.

Talking FreEly

Talking FreEly has been set up by local therapist, Anthony Silgrist to bring about change in attitudes toward mental health on a local level, here in East Cambridgeshire. The vision of the group is simple: A community which promotes mental wellness and empowers those suffering the effects of mental illness to step forward and seek the help they need. It has been inspired by the national campaign Time to Change, which was set up in in 2007 and aims to end mental health discrimination. Led by Mind and Rethink Mental Illness, the movement has already impacted on millions across the country.

Talk and Ac For Menta ‘The reason that groups like Talking FreELY need to exist is to give people the confidence to speak about their mental well-being, not feel ashamed.’ Says Anthony who leads the group and has himself struggled with mental health issues. ‘We want to bring about change and spread a positive message, that it’s OK to talk about mental health.’ The group kicks off with an event in the Ely Cathedral Centre on July 1st. It is an opportunity for all those with an interest in mental health to find out more about Talking FreELY. The event will feature a pop-up cafe and a free mindfulness zone. It is free to attend whether it’s for a coffee, a chat with one of the volunteers, to learn some mindfulness techniques or just to browse. You can keep up-to-date with Talking FreEly, as guest speakers for the event are announced on: Facebook: www.facebook.com/TalkingFreELY/ Twitter: @Talking FreEly Website: www.talkingfreely.org

Happy Cafe Ely at Julia’s Tearooms The team at Julia’s has cemented its commitment to improving the well-being of our community by joining the Happy Cafe Network. The first Happy Cafe was set up in Brighton in October 2014, with the aim of providing a welcoming meeting place for local people to learn about scientifically proven methods to improve happiness and personal well-being. Action for Happiness has researched and produced the ‘10 Keys for Happier Living’ and postcards, posters, leaflets and supporting literature will be available at Julia’s for people to read and to learn how to take action themselves. The idea to set up a Happy Cafe in Ely comes from local woman Kathryn Pearcey who is a passionate supporter of Action for Happiness based on her own positive experience of using their resources. She believes there is huge potential for local people to benefit in a similar way and she has gathered an enthusiastic team of volunteers who are working hard to facilitate the opening of Happy Cafe Ely @ Julia’s Tearooms. To celebrate the opening of Cambridgeshire’s first Happy Cafe, there will be a launch week starting on Monday July 10th with an exciting visit to the Cathedral Conference Centre by author and journalist Rachel Kelly. Rachel is an internationally known mental health campaigner, public speaker and writer and her second book on well-being ‘Walking on Sunshine: 52 Small Steps to Happiness’ is an international best-seller and has been published in the USA, Canada, Poland, Turkey,

Germany and Croatia. Rachel will be giving her ‘Walking on Sunshine’ presentation on Monday 10th July at 2pm at the Cathedral Centre and Toppings Booksellers will be providing a bookstall selling her books at the venue. Rachel will be available to answer questions after her talk and to do book signings. Entrance to the event will be by donation and all proceeds will be used to replenish and supplement the Action for Happiness resources available for everyone at Happy Cafe Ely. On Wednesday July 12th there will be the first fortnightly coffee morning at Julia’s where local volunteers from Action for Happiness will be available to chat about the ‘10 Keys for Happier Living’ and the resources available, if you wish. Initially volunteers will be there from 10.30am until noon on the first and third Wednesdays of the month with more meetings planned if there is the need, but everyone is welcome at any time to visit the Happy Cafe and to look at the materials there.

To conclude the week’s events, on Saturday July 15th there will be an afternoon tea/ picnic at Julia’s Tearooms, to be held outside the venue overlooking the Cathedral from 3 - 5pm. Julia’s will have a range of cakes, icecreams and hot drinks available to purchase or you can supply your own picnic and come along to find out more. Action for Happiness volunteers will be there, printed resources will be available and there will be some fun activities to take part in. Launching Happy Cafe Ely at Julia’s Tearooms is the start of an exciting and positive community enterprise which aims to make a real difference to the happiness of everyone. Updates will be posted regularly on our Happy Cafe Ely Facebook page and to find out more about Action for Happiness, go to: www. actionforhappiness.org www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 29

Since then, we have received a considerable amount of business through this fantastic magazine, which is delivered to every house in Ely and some houses in the surrounding areas. Warren says, ‘Cam Sight continued to support me with the forms I needed to get into university and some of their fantastic volunteers helped me by transcribing some interviews I recorded for my dissertation. Without their great help I would have found it very difficult to have graduated from Anglia Ruskin University in the summer of 2013 with a 2-1 in history.” With the support of Cam sight Warren has managed to maintain his independence. He has bought his own home and now works as a Camsight Ambassador.

Cambridgeshire Yoga and Vegan Festival Venue: The Paradise Centre, Ely, CB74PQ Date: June 11th, Sunday Time: 9.15am-5pm Contact: yogific@gmail.com Ahead of International Yoga Day, the beautiful city of Ely is all set to host Cambridgeshire's first-ever Yoga and Vegan festival. The venue is Ely's Paradise centre located in the heart of city. The event boasts multiple Yoga and meditation sessions, live music, stalls, vegan and raw vegan food, workshops, talks, Bollywood dancing and other activities. The entry ticket of £5, which can be bought online, entitles one to attend all (over 40) Yoga and meditation sessions for free and attend other activities at the event. The proceeds from this festival will be donated to Mayor of Ely's charitable fund and another charity, Miracle's Mission, that works for injured animals in South Asian countries. The festival is being organized by an online community of vegan Yogis, Yogific. "Cambridgeshire is home to many talented Yoga teachers, Yoga schools and a thriving vegan community, so this festival gives one the opportunity to meet all of them under one roof. Both Yoga and veganism root for a peaceful and compassionate lifestyle. Yoga is not limited to just postures and veganism is not limited to just food. We are organizing Yoga and Vegan festivals at many places in the UK and other countries in the Europe to help people see the connection between the two. These events also give a great platform to ethical small traders and startups to showcase their product/service to the public. All of our events are not-for-profit as we donate the proceeds to partner charities", says Kriti Sachdeva on behalf of Yogific. For more information, please visit the official website of the event: www.YogaVeganFest.com

Even the USAF have booked John to return this year and teach more American air crews. (in England!) Whether it’s guitar, flute, drums, mouth organ, piano or ukulele or any sort of musical instrument that you want to learn to play, John Bassett knows the fun and magical secrets! John says “It’s simply a case of having fun and achieving a goal, no matter how small or big. I relate it to the strap line we often see on TV or hear frequently on the radio; “IF THE FUN STOPS, STOP!” “There’s no need to understand music, this simply confuses the learning process although

I can teach that way if preferred. The important ingredient is to have fun whilst enjoying playing familiar songs. Learning an instrument takes a great deal of mental activity because your brain is learning something new. Take away some of the processes (hurdles) and the confidence grows and the fun starts to happen. It’s like speaking simple French phrases that everybody can understand…WITHOUT THE NEED TO WRITE FRENCH. Learning MUSIC THEORY is one of the hurdles that I usually remove. This way, the brain can concentrate on playing the music, not understanding the meaning of crescendos or rallentandos. You definitely don’t have to train to be a musician… just simply enjoy music!” John has played on both the television & the radio. He has recorded in some of the top studios and has performed around the world. His personal highlight was performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London. John lives in Ely.
