WELCOME ...from the Editor

EDITORIAL & DESIGN

Dear Readers, I’m very, very excited! With All Hallows just around the corner and Bonfire Night coming up, and the Ely Light Switch-on at the end of the month! We really are spoilt for fun outdoor events in November. Time to invest in new wellies! It’s also a time for remembering service men and women who lost their lives and so we are featuring the Cambridge Theatre Production of Goodnight Mr. Tom which is set against the backdrop of World War 2. If you are planning to go, don’t forget your tissues! We also have our own, home-grown Panto to look forward to from KD Theatre - more about that next month! Mayor, Ian Lyndsay is on theme too with his moving visit to the Mildenhall Base. The North Pole Skating is on again in Cambridge this winter and we have some family tickets to give away. Please go to our facebook page to enter the competition. Have a great November! Bridget x

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY This month my theme moves from the more historical on to community participation and individual recognition. In the last month we have been guests at two really heart-warming events. The first, held in Ely Library, was to present the certificates and awards to children who had successfully completed their Summer Reading Challenge, otherwise known as the Big Friendly Read. Participating children had to read 6 books over the Summer Holiday. The theme centred around Roald Dahl as it was the centenary of his birth, but children had a free choice as to what they read. Each successful participant received a certificate and a big shiny medal, and about 150 attended in batches to receive their recognition. The age range varied, lots of adults came too, and there was plenty of sibling rivalry. The Library Service had lots of volunteers to make it all possible, so it was just a lovely local event and a privilege to be involved even in such a small way. I have always been an avid reader, so it was equally lovely to know that the joy of reading and literature continues to play such a big part in children’s lives. On a much bigger stage we were equally privileged to attend the Joan Mann Special

Sports Day hosted by the United States Air Force at Mildenhall. Some 300 adults and children with special needs took part in a day of sport and competitive activity and enjoyed a traditional American BBQ lunch. They came from all over East Anglia and beyond, and many were accompanied by carers. Around 500 volunteers from Mildenhall and Lakenheath were involved, and it took most of the year to organise. Again every participant received a medal for taking part, but at the end of the day there was an Olympic style presentation for the 3 winners in every event. My role, along with an American colonel in uniform, was to present the gold, silver and bronze to the winners of the wheelchair slalom. Lots of local mayors, council chairmen and American colonels did the same thing for the other events. A tiny part in a massive event that involved so much community involvement and mutual goodwill. By the way, Joan Mann was an English lady who worked at Mildenhall, and started the event over 30 years ago. What a memorial. Cllr. Ian Lindsay

CAMBRIDGE ENVISAGED Ely artist Peter Corr, along with Caroline Forward (Little Ouse) and Paul Janssens (Fordham) are putting on a new exhibition ‘Cambridge Envisaged’ which will open at the Michaelhouse Cafe, Cambridge on Monday 7th November 2016. Featuring stunning new works, this exhibition showcases diverse perspectives on Cambridge, its architecture, history and its street life.

Peter Corr says about his series of richly textured and glazed abstract paintings, “I wanted to reflect something of the spirit of thinking, order, imagination, reason and invention that permeates the fabric of this special city.”

Paul Janssen’s multi-layered paintings capture the movement that is ever present in the city and market, and portray a sense of authenticity, change and history through his use of wood, old maps, postcards, and found materials from the market to build up the vibrant complexity of his paintings. Caroline Forward’s oil paintings explore the interplay of stained glass colour and light with stonework and architecture, capturing the stillness and monumentality of historic architecture. The result of this collaboration, the first time these 3 artists have exhibited together, is a rich, colourful, energetic and contemporary take on this historic city. The exhibition runs from 8am Monday 7th November until 5pm Saturday 19th November in the Michaelhouse Cafe, Trinity Street, Cambridge CB2 1SU. Phone 01223 309167

With over 30 years combined experience in the landscape industry, the team at Cityscapes have the knowledge and skills to create any type of landscape. We always build the gardens to the highest standards, with an eye for detail and always going above and beyond the current industry standard. Cityscapes take special care and maintain a clean and tidy site, keeping noise and disruption to a minimum, not only for our clients but the surrounding neighbours and we never compromise on the quality of materials or workmanship. We build each of our projects to last and refuse to cut corners or say ‘That will do’.

Cityscapes believe that communication is key in running a successful business and organising a landscape project. A 30% deposit is required prior to work commencing. We will arrange a time and date to start the project and once underway we will keep the clients informed of any deliveries and what will be carried out on a daily basis. We aim to maintain our schedule and completion dates. Once the work is finished and the site is left clean and tidy we will seek agreement from our clients on the quality of the work. Once completed, we will sign off the project and invoice the client for the remaining balance. Cityscapes do not believe in snag lists, we aim to do it right first time, every time. www.cityscapescambridge.co.uk www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 11

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Bibi’s Indian Cookery Courses Asia set up Bibi’s Indian Cookery two years ago and has been cooking since she was six years old. She started cooking with youth and community groups and soon realised the benefits of her cookery experience as they really enjoyed cooking and eating the fruits of their labour; it became a real social occasion and very beneficial.

“The best Indian cuisine I have tasted.” Asia has cooked for and is well known in the Cambridge community and more recently in Ely since moving here six years ago, providing extensive cuisine knowledge from India, Bangladesh and Pakistan including some traditional Sri Lankan dishes cooked in the traditional way. There are various options available from one to one sessions lasting two and a half hours for a basic course, to a half or full day group sessions which can be split into manageable chunks to fit in with you. Learning about the spices and a very hands-on approach is fundamental to the enjoyment of participating in these courses and there is something available for everyone.

Special Offer... for Ely residents £59 for one to one cookery tuition and invite a friend free!

Home parties can be booked for up to eight people, Asia sends an ingredients list in advance and comes along at 6pm, teaches you and your guests how to cook, she leaves at 9pm and you eat your meal, and have fun. If you would like to expand your knowledge of Indian cuisine, learn how to cook it and have some fun along the way, you will love these courses, give it a try, we had a wonderful evening and learnt lots of new skills!

cambridgecookery@gmail.com www.cambridgecookingclasses.co.uk 07476364458

The Cookery classes are very hands on , everyone gets involved. The home parties are great for a social gathering, hen night or simply to have fun cooking. One to ones offer more in-depth cooking skills.

Great Idea! GIFT VOUCHERS: popular for 40th / 50th Birthdays Anniversaries or for Christmas.

DREAM DOORS

Celebrates TWO YEARS IN ELY

Dream Doors are now firmly established on the Market Square in Ely and their inspirational showroom continues to be a magnet for people seeking either a quick and effortless transformation or a fully planned, designed, and fitted kitchen.

Owners Gareth and Louise are understandably clear on the advantages their business can bring, “It offers the best of both worlds for customers. They’re buying from a national brand that’s won numerous awards and built a fantastic reputation. But they’re also dealing with local business owners who have their own reputation and livelihood at stake”. It has proved to be a combination that leaves kitchens looking like new, but without the stress, upheaval and cost of a full refurbishment.

26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Dream Doors will be celebrating their second year at their showroom at the end of October. Along with some amazing offers, there have also been some exciting updates to the showroom in the last few weeks, in anticipation of this. As the only exclusive Neff Master Partner showroom in the local area. They have a new, large working Neff display area and are able to offer exclusive Neff promotions and live cookery demonstrations within the showroom. The showroom also has an outstanding range of stunning Blanco silgranit sinks. Available in eight on-trend colours in warm and cool tones: anthracite, cafe brown, cinder, truffle, metallic grey, biscuit, biscotti and white. They also have a fully operational Perrin & Rowe 3-in-1 instant hot water tap. It includes the anti-scald mechanism, compact tank design and digital temperature display. It will make you wonder how you ever lived without it. As well as an impressive range of new matt and natural colour doors. There has never been a better time to visit their showroom. VISITORS GALORE EXPECTED AT ELY CATHEDRAL CHRISTMAS FAIR 18th - 19th November

Following on from the success and ever growing popularity of the annual Christmas Fair at Ely Cathedral, organisers have made some significant changes and introduced a new booking system as well as a dedicated entry time for users of wheelchairs and pushchairs. Lesley Ann Thompson of Ely cathedral said “ With the increased popularity of this event, we are constantly looking for ways to improve logistics and ensure the safety and wellbeing

of visitors. We hope that by introducing a new ticketing system we can reduce queues and ensure a pleasurable experience for everyone attending the event. We are encouraging people to buy their tickets in advance to avoid disappointment and guarantee entry into the Fair as this year we will be limiting numbers inside the building at any given time. This year we have also introduced a dedicated entry for ‘Shoppers with Wheels’ which provides exclusive access to the event for users of prams, wheelchairs and disability scooters”. The Ely Cathedral Christmas Gift & Food Fair takes place from Friday 18th November and Saturday 19th November 2016. Visitors are strongly advised to buy tickets in advance from the Cathedral website www.elycathedral.org or direct from the box office – 01353 660349 For the duration of the Fair there will be a dedicated Park & Ride facility to help ease congestion in the city centre and its car parks. The Park & Ride service will operate from a site on the outskirts of Ely with buses leaving every 15 minutes to drop off and pick up right outside the main door of the Cathedral. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 29

GOODNIGHT MISTER TOM

TUES 20 – FRI 23 DECEMBER 2016

Great Hall at The Leys, Fen Causeway, Cambridge CB2 7AD Cambridge Theatre Company was formed by Louis Ling, Artistic Director in 2012, who previously worked as Stage Manager in the West End and on tour, working on such plays from The History Boys to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and they are thrilled that they have been given special permission to present Goodnight Mister Tom in Cambridge this Christmas. Now a modern classic, Michelle Magorian’s wonderfully uplifting tale is brought gloriously to life in this magical stage adaptation by David Wood. Set during the dangerous buildup to the Second World War, Goodnight Mister Tom follows young William Beech, who is evacuated to the idyllic English countryside and forges a remarkable and heart-warming friendship with the gruff recluse, Tom Oakley, played by Richard Sockett. All is perfect until William is suddenly summoned by his mother back to London. Its a subject sure to tug at the heart strings and is without doubt a remarkeable piece of theatre. The Times review of the London West End show read.. “It ends as children’s theatre should; adults audibly snivelling and children breathlessly attentive.” Cambridge rehearsals are going extremely well. It’s a fantastic local cast and creative team who are bringing this touching and uplifting story to life.

Cast members were selected by audition and it was fiercely competitive with 70 children auditioning for just 18 parts, the result is a very talented and committed team. As a production company who specialise in community theatre CTC use their knowledge and experience to bring professionals on board to ensure the expertise and input for an outstanding, authentic production.

It ends as children’s theatre should; adults audibly snivelling and children breathlessly attentive. Winner of the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and commended for the Carnegie Medal, Goodnight Mister Tom is now a worldwide literary favourite and BAFTA award-winning TV film (starring John Thaw), and continues to inspire audiences and bring generations together. It’s going to be a real family treat this Christmas and will be a very different theatre experience. If you fancy a rare piece of local amateur theatre, come along to see Goodnight Mister Tom at Great Hall at The Leys from Tues 20 – Fri 23 December 2016.

It’s usually Madeleine’s job to go out and about visiting our advertisers and supporters but this month it was the turn of Coco, Bridget’s mad-as-a-hatter’ cocker spaniel. Beth of Nails to Tails had invited us to come and try her new parlour inside Jurassic Bark Pet Supplies. She had her grand opening at the beginning of October and business has gotten off to a great start with her diary getting booked up by local pet owners already. Beth has been grooming for 2 ½ years. She started out after college, working as an assistant in a grooming parlour and her then manager recognised her flair with animals and offered to put her through her City and Guilds grooming qualification. She has since added animal first aid to her list of qualifications. Beth is still only 21 but having taken the plunge earlier in the year to start up her own mobile dog grooming business she now feels the time is right to expand and offer in-salon grooming. She has a purpose built parlour set within the pet store which means dog owners have the added bonus of being able to pick up a few supplies while they are waiting, pop into one of the other retailers on the business park or shoot off home and come back later. So how was it for Coco? Well, true to breed he is quite lively and bouncy and can be a bit clingy but Beth quickly put him at his ease and he was happily sitting up on the table with Beth getting to work on his long straggly hair when I left. I was not looking forward to what she might say about the state of his coat and nails! He does look lovely when he’s shaggy but because of the knots and matts in his hair we asked for a close clip. 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Just over an hour later I had a text from Beth to say he was ready. Coco usually hates being clipped and complains loudly when I pick him up but he was a picture of happiness when I arrived, as well as very handsome! Rather than complain he seemed keen to tell me all about his new friend Beth! All in all it was a great experience. Beth listened to what I wanted and her gentle and confident style was just right for our potentially hyper doggy. Nails to Tails is open Tuesday 9am-5.30pm, Wed 11am -7pm, Friday 9am - 5.30pm and Saturday 9am - 5pm. Call 07940210136 to book an appointment or you can email: nailstotails@ yahoo.com for more information. Prices start from as little as £6 for a nail clip and a typical cocker spaniel groom is £30. Please call for other prices for other breeds. Nails to Tails is located inside Jurassic Bark Pet Supplies on the Saxon Business Park Littleport.

SAVE THE CHILDREN SYRIA APPEAL On 27th November Margot and Derek Andrews are showing their painting and craft work in aid of Save the Children’s Syria appeal. They will welcome visitors to their home at Douglas Court, off Prickwillow Road, Ely, as they did in November last year, when they raised over £4,000 for Syrian refugee children. Everyone was generous then, often donating more than suggested for their items, chosen from work both old and new, created over the years by Derek and Margot, during their years as teachers, and as potters at Prickwillow. This year, tiles made long ago at the pottery, have been set into framed panels which will be for sale. Three of them are now small tables, and one will be 1st prize in a raffle drawn on the day. A few pieces from pottery days have been rediscovered as well as new paintings made recently. Open 10.30 am. to 5.00 pm. Come to Douglas Court and follow the signs! Meditation Retreat

The healing power of meditation with Meditation Teacher, Sara Molyneux

Saturday 19 November 10.30am - 1pm £15 Ely Library, 6 The Cloisters, Ely, CB7 4ZH For more information please visit www.meditateinpeterborough.org.uk On this retreat course we will explore the power of meditation to heal our mind. There are two one-hour sessions with a coffee break and an opportunity to chat and ask questions.

Paris is part of our Magazine Distribution Team which takes alot of ‘get up and go’ every month so we are really happy to support Paris with her fundraising for her Kenya trip!

Hello,

On this retreat day we will: • Explore how meditation is medicine for the mind • Learn which states of mind give rise to both internal and external pain and problems • Learn meditations to counteract the inner sources of pain and discomfort and learn how to apply these meditations in everyday life. About the teacher: The retreat will be taught by Meditation Teacher Sara Molyneux who has been practising and teaching meditation for 14 years. If you have further queries please contact us: Sue Gunn - Education Programme Coordinator Drolma Buddhist Centre, 260 Dogsthorpe Road, Peterborough, PE1 3PG Tel: 01733 755444

I’ve been given a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to the slum area of Nakuru in Kenya to help make a difference to the families that live there and make it a better place for them. I will be helping to build a new classroom for the children so that more of them can receive an education as well as assisting in the classrooms built by people in previous projects with African Adventures. This work will entail cooking for and feeding the children, working alongside the teachers in class and helping to decorate the classroom after we have all built it. Obviously this trip will come with a big cost in which I can’t afford, that’s why I need you and your kind donations! All of your money will be going towards the African Adventures project and it will be all of you who make it possible for me to go. I will be forever grateful towards anyone who donates. Please tell all your friends and family about this project and help make a difference too! Below is the link where you can donate and has full details of the trip. https://www.gofundme.com/2reedyjx Paris O’Keeffe, (16)
