Welcome to the March/April issue! This is such a lovely time of year as we emerge from winter and into spring. There is so much going on and we have tried to feature as much as the space will allow. This time we have concentrated on active groups and meetings in Ely. If your group isn’t listed then do get in touch and we will try to make sure that you get some publicity. This section really is driven by you so please do use it. I want to be swamped with information! I know we have only had a little flurry of snow so far, but it does feel a little like it’s snowing here in the Elyi office; lots of businesses are using the magazine now to let you know what they are offering and there is a bit of a snowball effect going on as more and more keen businesses support us. A big thank you to them as that means there is more space to feature charities and non-profit groups. Hurrah! We also have some new guest writers joining us for this issue. Lucy Acred tell us of her experiences with Beekeeping and Adam Faber has been speaking to Ely Woodturners who have an open day coming up in April in Little Thetford. Kevin Holland is encouraging us to watch our water use with his ‘top ten eco tips’ again, a regular and popular feature. And it is great too to have a few words from our Mayor who has been promoting the city and encouraging City Centre development during her year in office (among many other things!). Councillor Elisabeth Every, Mayor of Ely It has been an extremely rewarding year working with the team of councillors and staff on improvements to the City. We provide quality facilities at the Cemetery and our play parks; the City was ablaze with colourful flowers; the Christmas Lights and Switch On were the best we have had. We have moved into the Court House as our offices and taken over The Maltings.
Plans are in place to develop strong business/school links encouraging employability skills and facilitating opportunities for our young people to work locally.
Partnerships are thriving. The City Centre Forum works to develop our local City economy through local consultation. The strong relationships result in the City Centre benefiting from increased footfall during all our major events.
I have always been aware of the magnificent community spirit here in Ely which has been reinforced many times in recent months as I move around the City, meet new people and attend functions.
2015 will continue to bring opportunities for our City and our people and we need to ensure that we capitalise on these. A new website will contribute towards better communication.
I look forward to meeting many more before the end of my Civic Year in May 2015.

Don’t Let Your Home Be Sold To Pay For Care Home Fees. Many people these days are worried that their home will have to be sold to pay for residential care home fees. It is estimated that between 30,000-40,000 people lose their homes this way every year. Don’t let this happen to you.
...between 30,000 - 40,000 lose their homes...don’t let this happen to you. There are legal ways of protecting your home and assets through a “Right to Occupancy” section included in your Will. This means that when the first spouse dies, his/her half goes to the children but the surviving spouse has Right to Occupancy, and the capital passes to the survivor. If the survivor goes into care, half of the house is protected, but not the capital.
You could also have a Property/Asset Protective Trust Will, which means you set up a Trust in your Will so when the first spouse dies their half of the estate goes into a Trust for the survivor and children. The survivor is a Trustee, and has a large element of control over that half of the estate. If the survivor goes into care, the first half of the house (which is in Trust) is protected. Then there is the Family Protection Trust – sometimes known as “Probate Avoidance Trust” (Legal term – Lifetime Discretionary Trust). You transfer the house and most of your assets into your respective Trusts. The purpose of these Trusts is not to avoid our own care costs but to avoid our half passing to the survivor and then being used for the survivors care home costs. There are six good legal reasons for setting up a FPT, one of those being: should the survivor re-marry and then die, the children’s inheritance is protected and your hard earned savings can be kept within the family. To Bee or Not to Bee? Ely Resident, Lucy Acred tells us about her and her husband’s passion for all things bees..... A talk by an experienced beekeeper, at my local Women’s Institute Group, was what started my hobby, I liked the idea of it, it was a high profile cry for help. Save our Bees! Suddenly, local beekeepers, members of my community who I never knew kept bees, were offering me help, and I adopted one as my mentor, and believe it, we needed one! Myself and my husband (a reluctant beekeeper, yes, we are on this journey together, as one) naively brought a hive from a beekeeper who was ‘winding down’, and we managed to transport it from Newmarket to Little Downham in the back of our car! Dozy, disorientated bees clinging to the roof lining, the image will stay with me forever!

If you are interested in beekeeping, I would recommend joining a Bee Keeping Association, (they may be able to help you with bees too) I did a short course with them too. Equipment, hives and smocks can be sourced easily on the Internet through sites like eBay and Thornes. I find rubber gloves work extremely well, and can be purchased at the supermarket. (Waitrose!) I did a course with a beekeeping association, ‘check your bees’ they said, to make sure you know what you are buying, and they are healthy. To be honest, by the time we had ‘safely’ got them in the car, which resulted in my other half being stung in the process, I breathed a sigh of relief when we had reached our destination, and the hive was put into position. That was around 4 years ago now, a distant memory! We are in the ‘know’ about swarming, queen cells, chill brood and other bee technical terms, well I like to think so anyway, but we seem to learn something new every time we open the hive. In fact I don’t think you ever stop learning. An early Sunday morning telephone call from the local conservation group was my eureka moment, and I’m sure that anyone who has witnessed this phenomenon will also agree? Bees that swarm, literally cling together around the queen. They were literally hanging together in my neighbours ornamental tree, like a bunch of grapes. A quick bang on the trunk with the

March energy saving tips from Solar Kev Saving energy & money isn’t always about heating and electricity. Water harvesting and water conservation can have long lasting effects on your pocket as well as on the precious resource it is. 1) Fix a water butt to EVERY downpipe on your property / garden buildings 2) A water butt pump (£50-£60) can help you transfer water from where it is stored to where it is needed. 3) Join several water butts together if you have the space, collect as much as you can. 4) Most pressure washers will work well when attached to a water butt. Why pay for something that is free? 5) Google search ‘LOW-FLOW SHOWER HEADS’ they can save a small fortune and cost next to nothing. 6) A Plastic bottle or brick in your cistern could save a couple of pints a flush! 7) The good old ‘If it’s yellow, let it mellow and if it’s brown, flush it down’ is one we have lived with for years……
8) Save the hot water run-off in plastic milk bottles and use it to pre-load washing machine etc. Why pour money down the drain when you can use it elsewhere? 9) Share the Bath / Shower with someone special, go on….. You know it makes sense. 10) Wall mounted water butts are brilliant for a quick rinse when going back into the house from the garden. Use as much of the free stuff as you can. We will be given the opportunity to decode the iconography and symbolism used to decorate Arms and Armour as overt symbols of power, wealth and authority. Finally we will explore through a series of direct comparisons how armour evolved and was developed using paintings and manuscripts and how contemporary fashion influenced it too. This lecture will be expanded by a visit to the Wallace collection later in the year. Ely & District Model Railway Club Superb New Clubroom! Calling new members! Our friendly, inclusive Club moved has moved into a purpose converted new Clubroom. We now have plenty of room to build our two new exhibition layouts. This large, comfortable space is located between Ely & Soham. Neighbourhood Watch
Neighbourhood Watch exists to work with the local police force to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, and also to encourage neighbourliness. This provides an increased feeling of security for the local residents. Ely Woodturners When I spoke with Dick Brown, president of the Woodturner’s Guild of Ely, he was in the middle of sorting out his computer. So he was very happy to be distracted from that and to talk about his passion for working with wood. “There’s something about making an object with your own hands,” he said. “The process is a bit therapeutic as well.”
“The public gets a chance to see us work, as well as try their hand at the lathe under our supervision,” said Dick. The open day is an opportunity for the Guild to find new members to join the ranks, which has been in operation since 1988. “We had a number of people come through the doors last year, including a little tyke,” said Dick. “We’ve got to get new people to keep this thing going.” However, Dick had to get back to convincing the hard drive in his computer to keep spinning. “If you’re the technical sort, you can find all our info at Elyguildofwoodturners.org.uk . The Woodturner’s Guild is a group of about sixty men and women who turn their own pieces on whirring lathes, either to keep for themselves or to sell. The members teach each other the tricks that they know, as well as bringing in guest presenters every few months. Dick leads his share of classes for the newcomers to the guild, with an upcoming session on how to make your own seed planting dibbler. Skill levels vary, as well as ages and genders. “The women I have taught have had a certain touch the men don’t,” said Dick. “The men don’t always like to take direction.” All are welcome to attend the Guild’s open day: Saturday, April 18th at Little Thetford Village Hall.
