WELCOME ...from the EDITORS Dear Readers, Welcome to the May edition of the Elyi Magazine. This month we bring you our usual wealth of information about local groups, events and businesses. Firstly, we have been thrilled with some of the feedback from our advertisers. It seems advertising in our little mag is quite effective... Wahoo!! Thank you to all our businesses that responded to Madeleine’s email and sent in comments about the magazine. We will be featuring some of those in this and future issues as well as on our website. Thank you to our readers too. When you tell a business or service you found them here it helps them to see that their support of the magazine is not wasted. We would like to say a big thank you to Ian and Suzanne Lyndsay for their monthly contribution to the magazine as Ely’s Mayoral couple and very much look forward to Richard and Pat Hobbs taking over and telling us what they are up to during the 2017/18 term from the June issue onwards. April saw the launch of the Ely Hero Awards. So, please have a look at page 6 which gives you information about the categories and how to nominate but do also keep an eye out for the latest in the Ely Standard which will be carrying weekly updates on the nominations too. Celebrating what is great about Ely is something we love to do so when Naomi from MetroRod suggested we get on board we jumped at the chance. We are sponsoring the Neighbour of the Year and will be delighted to hand over the trophy to the deserving winner on Monday June 19th at the Maltings. Finally, thank you for reading and supporting us. Keep sending your info in and remember the deadline is ALWAYS the 10th of the preceding month. best wishes Bridget & Madeleine

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY As I write this article I am in my final month as Mayor, and this is now my eleventh contribution to this splendid magazine. This means that on Monday 15th May at the Annual Council Meeting when Mayor Making takes place I will be passing on the robe and regalia to Cllr Richard Hobbs. We will also be swearing in Cllr Mike Rouse as Richard’s deputy and so the annual parish council year starts once again. I could not ask for two better individuals to take on the responsibilities of chairing the Council and its many meetings, whilst representing the city and its people at so many civic events and local happenings. Twelve months ago I wrote that “though our (parish council) powers are modest, and our responsibilities are mundane, my aim will be simply to use our powers and influence to best advantage. I want to realise The City of Ely Council’s vision for Ely, which is for it to be a successful, vibrant, attractive place, where people want to live, work and visit” It is now time to reflect on the realities of that paragraph, and what it has involved over the year that I have been Chairman of the City Council. In that 12 months we played our part in organising and administrating the petition against the threatened closure of the Minor Injuries Unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital site. We participated at the open meetings arranged by the Cambridgeshire Clinical Commissioning Group. Wearing different hats, some of our members were subsequently involved in the complex but exciting and constructive plans to develop the services and the site to provide more comprehensive 44 || Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine || www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com

services. We campaigned to mitigate a threat to reduce street gritting routes in the City, and are fighting to reduce the effects of the County Council PFI initiative that has led to a loss of street lights in our residential areas. This campaign is ongoing, but one notable success was to restore the levels of lighting on Back Hill. We continued to strive to maintain the presence of toilets in Barton Road car park. Through our planning committees we strove to maintain our vision for Ely when offering advice to the planning department. A lot of our work is collaborative in nature, whether, as at present it is with Cambridgeshire County Council, in developing cycle ways and road improvements in Cambridge Road; with East Cambridgeshire District Council in developing the Local Plan; or with voluntary organisations as in participating in litter picks and community forums. We act as advocates for our electorate, and contributed to consultations on local and national issues, such as electoral boundary reforms, level crossing closures or the capping of precepts at Parish level. We wait to see what effects a directly elected mayor for the Combined Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Authority will have at our level of local government. As Mayor, together with Suzanne as Mayoress, we have had the privilege of attending a huge range of events both serious and fun, and met so many interesting, devoted and inspiring people. I’ve written about some of these in the pages of Elyi, but that just represents a small part of my experiences as Mayor. In the next two weeks I will be returning to the back benches of the Council: from mink to sink as it were. However, so many great memories will remain with us for the rest of our lives, and I just hope that Richard and Pat will enjoy their year in office just as much as we have. Ian Lindsay

There are so many reasons why we should all be proud to live and work in Ely and the surrounding villages, we have some of the most amazing people who live here, who work here and who make it one of the greatest cities! Ely’s brand-new community event was launched at a drinks reception on Tuesday, 4th of April, at The Poets House. The event is “Ely Local Hero Awards” in association with MetroRod (Cambridge), together with their media partner The Ely Standard, part of The Archant Group of Newspapers. There are 10 categories that we are searching for individuals to nominate their rather special “Hero” who lives or works in Ely and the surrounding villages, within a 10-mile radius. Our judges will shortlist 3 nominations that will be invited to the exclusive Award Ceremony at The Maltings on June 19th where the winner of each category will be announced by Ely’s Mayor. Some of Ely’s local businesses have got on board and are kindly sponsoring the categories, including Grovemere, Ward Gethin Archer, Elyi Magazine, The CHS Group, Life Fitness, Thor Labs, Red Shoes Accounting, Puggles and Seahorses Swim Schools. Other sponsors are local companies; Infiniti Graphics who designed the fabulous brand logo and website and Sadie Finch VA who is kindly providing administration assistance. Along with the judging panel they attended the launch party. MetroRod (Cambridge) said; “We have been personally inspired by the reports of local people who do amazing things in the community, we feel these individuals should be rewarded, encouraged and celebrated. MetroRod (Cambridge) is very proud to be organising Ely’s very first Hero Awards and encourage everyone to nominate their local Hero in one of the categories and help celebrate our fantastic city and the individuals that make it great! The support, generosity and positivity from Ely’s businesses and the 6 panel | Elyi of Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com judges has been overwhelming”.

Help us shine a light on our local heroes who are the most compassionate, determined, honourable, kind, supportive or brave the real unsung heroes of Ely! Categories are: Smiliest Server Best Parent Caring Companion Most Amazing Professional Neighbour of the Year Community Champion Best Teacher Child of Achievement Sporting Hero THE Ely Hero Nominations can be made using a form available in Burrows Bookshop (Ely High Street Passage) or online at www.elyheroawards.org.uk Entries close 15th May Facebook: /elyheroes Twitter: @elyheroes

The Elyi magazine is my first port of call for finding local products and services so when I started my pet services business I thought it the perfect place to advertise! The team at the Elyi are a pleasure to work with as they take a 'no pressure' approach and were very helpful in discussing the best options for my advert and organising the artwork. I find the prices to be very cost effective.... The advert I place in Elyi every month has raised the profile of my business and regularly attracts new clients, so its worth its weight in gold! Keep up the great work Elyi. Artist Impression

A VAST RANGE OF POTS AND PLANTS AT PARKHALL GARDEN CENTRE, SOMERSHAM. Parkhall Garden Centre, based in Somersham near St Ives has become well known as a more ‘back to basics’ site, more focused on plants and garden related goods than many of the much larger destination centres that are so focused on restaurant and concession areas, however it does sell hot and cold drinks, ice creams, cakes and chocolates! Most keen gardeners and first time visitors are pleasantly surprised to find so much more than expected. Very easy to find in a pleasant rural location north of Somersham, this specialist garden centre retails quite possibly the largest display of glazed and terracotta pots, trees and bagged aggregates in Cambridgeshire. It also produces all its own bedding and hanging basket plants and actively grows larger, specimen trees shrubs and conifers for that more instant effect.

The pots and containers range from a few pence to hundreds of pounds, all shapes, sizes and colours with a wide selection of clearance and discounted lines. Most bagged stones are either 3/£10 or 3/£12 in a wide choice of colours and textures. The variety of trees includes native and ornamental, from 2m up to 4-5m as older, more mature specimens. While the outlet sells the expected range of roses, alpines, climbers, conifers and smaller 2/3 litre plants that most sites stock it also has a wide selection of larger, specimen plants in much bigger pots for instant gardening and many rare and unusual plants that most garden centres tend not to hold. Many plants are grown on site and so these are very well priced compared to many businesses that buy stock in and free local delivery is available for larger items if carriage paid. All major cards are accepted. So if it’s an unusual specimen plant or pot you are after then perhaps it’s time you paid Parkhall Garden Centre a visit! They’ll even throw in a free bag of compost if your spend over £25. Just take the magazine along with you. www.parkhallgardencentre.co.uk

LAWNMOWER CARE TIPS FROM FENLAND SPIRIT SERVICES

Fenland Spirit Services Lawnmower Sales, Servicing & Repairs

Having completed the first few cuts to your lawn, it is useful to be reminded of a few easy maintenance tips to keep your lawnmower in good shape. Check the oil level every 3-4 cuts - whilst mowers do not normally use a lot of oil, it is worth checking the level every few cuts to ensure the engine is lubricated. A general purpose 30 weight oil is advised which should be easily available from most retailers. Never tip the mower on its side - if you think there’s anything round the blade, shut off the mower and lower the handles to the ground. Tipping the mower on its side may put oil into either the exhaust or the carburettor and give your mower a bad day. Clean out under the deck - damp grass left under the deck of your mower will rot and become acidic, resulting in corrosion on metal decked mowers. It can also clog up drive belts and axles under the mower stopping the self propelled system on certain mowers from working.

Keep the mower blade sharp - a sharp blade on your mower will provide a clean cut to your grass, reducing brown tips on your lawn, a dull blade will tear the grass. How old is the fuel in your can? - most people don’t realise petrol does “go off” and will make your lawnmower run badly. If the fuel in your can is more than about 2 months old, dispose of it responsibly and buy some fresh. Your mower will thank you. Most running issues with a mower can be resolved with a service, so before taking your mower to landfill, consider calling Fenland Spirit Services for a service, it will cost you less than you may think and save you money in the long run. 28 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

CAN YOU TAME THE BEAST? Sutton Beast Fun Run - Sunday June 11th 2017

One of the region’s most popular 10K and Fun Run events is back for 2017 and online entry for both races is already open. ‘The Beast’ is held annually in Sutton and both races involve a multi terrain course – the Tony Robinson 10K taking you off the edge of The Isle of Ely, out into the Fens and back while treading on a variety of pathways, including road, grass and fen droves. This year’s event will be the first that is ‘chip timed’ and orgainsers Martin Pickering and Stuart Green are looking forward to it already, “Event preparation is well underway and it promises to be the best yet. As we speak, nature is preparing the course! We are proud to say that we are supported by many local businesses including Cheffins who are the principal sponsor”. The event also features ‘The Mini Beast’ – a fun run designed with old and young alike in mind and is sponsored by ‘Treetops Soft Play’. There are also bouncy castles and lots of other fun surprises to entertain runners and their supporters too. 32 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

All entrants receive medals and 10K competitors will get a limited edition tech Beast Tee Shirt after they cross the line. Over 20 Years Experience 34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Embracing the WHOLE pet experience in the Petstore that stocks it ALL TOBY’S TREAT I like being clean, but I also LOVE being dirty. Nothing gives me more pleasure than when I spot a huge dirty puddle when I am hot after a long walk. I just sit in it and swish the mud over me, much to my owner’s delight. It was suggested that I have a professional doggie pamper for a spruce up - I wasn’t disappointed. The Dog Bathing Company located in Queen Adelaide and owned by Vicky and Elaine (my best mates now) was the ideal place to get me looking handsome again, Vicky does the dogs and Elaine does the cats. It wasn’t the fun I had hoped for chasing the cats but they did a marvellous job washing and drying me, they cut my nails, trimmed my ears and feathers and I looked and felt like a new dog afterwards. They really looked after me. I also had great fun as I found some toys in the playpen! I am now booked in regularly and can sit in as many puddles as I like and not get told off. A big thank you to my new found human friends. Toby. Vicky & Elaine of The Dog bathing Company

MEDITATION AND MINDFULNESS COURSE IN ELY Positivity Boost with Meditation Teacher, Sara Molyneux Saturday 20 May 10.30am - 1pm £15 / Ely Library, 6 The Cloisters, Ely, CB7 4ZH Everyone is welcome. Discover the power of meditation and mindfulness in Ely: Boost your positive mental energy by training in meditation and learning how to cultivate beneficial states of mind that bring peace and contentment. Everyone is welcome to attend and no experience of meditation is needed. The course comprises two one-hour sessions with a coffee/tea break with a chance to ask questions and browse our book shop. The purpose of meditation is to make our mind calm and peaceful. If our mind is peaceful we shall be free from worries and mental discomfort, and so we shall experience true happiness. By training in meditation we can gradually learn to stay peaceful all the time, even in the most difficult circumstances. If we practise meditation we will experience a calm, spacious feeling in the mind, and many of our usual problems will fall away.

Difficult situations will become easier to deal with, we will naturally feel warm and well disposed towards other people, and our relationships with others will gradually improve. About the teacher: The retreat will be taught by Meditation Teacher Sara Molyneux who has been practising and teaching meditation for 14 years. If you have further queries please contact us. Littleport and Ely Timebank have been united for 6 months with 12 new members coming aboard since the new formation, and 400 hours exchanged between members in this time which is fantastic! Spring brings with it more exchanges as members get their gardens in order, have a spring clean or support us and volunteer their time helping to promote ourselves within the community. As the weather improves we have a lot of requests for help with gardening and garden maintenance and the hunt for green fingered enthusiasts increases as well as painters and decorators. On a serious note, The Timebank partnership which comprises of Littleport & Ely, Somersham, Warboys, Houghton & Wyton and Cambourne have launched a crowdfunder; ‘Time to End Loneliness’. We wish to raise £3k to help our Cambridgeshire Timebanks continue to fight loneliness. Loneliness can affect anyone at any stage of their life whether you are a new mum, a pensioner who has outlived their friends, or moved to a new area. Studies suggest that Britain is the loneliness capital of Europe – we are less likely to know our neighbours or have strong friendships than people anywhere else in Europe. Your funding will have a positive impact on the lives of many other Cambridgeshire residents by helping the Timebanks run the following activities: • • • • •

Cook and Share sessions Coffee Mornings Community Walks Skill Sharing Events and Festivals

Our crowdfunder ends on the 8th May so If you think you can support us, please go to http://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/time-to-endloneliness and pledge. Contact Caline.easey@ chsgroup.org.uk or call 07702517746 www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 41

HISTORY OF ELY AQUAFEST 1978 -2017 On a visit to the Rotary Club of Axminster, Rotarian Stan Baker [pictured] of this club overheard a discussion on raft and canoe racing on the river Axe. Stan thought we could do something similar on the river Ouse here in Ely and so put it to the club who said it was a good idea. Having obtained permission to use the field by the river on Willow Walk, the club fixed a date of the 16th July 1978 when Aquafest was born. We wrote to local firms inviting them to build rafts to race to the Cutter and back. We also asked those with canoes to race from the Black Horse Inn, Littleport to Military Bridge on the A1123 and back to Ely. This was a long race and subsequently died a natural death after two years. Main arena events were often spectacular such as High Wire

acts, Parachute Jumps and an AutoGyro attacking Rotarian John Dennick who was on the river. The AutoGyro was flown by its creator, Wing Commander Ken Wallis who also doubled as Sean Connery in the James Bond films. In 2004 the Rotary Club of Ely-Hereward was formed and were invited to participate with us, as a joint venture. It was in 2006 that we expanded Aquafest to incorporate Jubilee Gardens thus involving the whole of Ely’s waterfront. Three of the original Rotarians, who were at the very first Aquafest, have between them participated at every event in the 38 years that Aquafest has been running.
