Madeleine Funnell Advertising / Account manager madeleine.funnell@gmail.com

Welcome to the Nov/Dec edition of The Elyi Magazine. Phew! what a busy old time it is here in Ely. It’s been quite a task selecting what to put in this issue. We have by no means covered everything, but hopefully there is something for everyone and if the mag keeps growing at this rate we will be able to get more and more in each time. A huge thank you to the advertisers who support the magazine. Please use them and tell them you saw them here! Their patronage makes it possible to include all the charity, events and group information. Also included in this issue is a centre pullout of local ‘special offers’ put together by Ely Perspective and the City Council for you to use in our lovely local shops this winter. Each voucher tells you when and where you can use it. Thank you to Anastasia and Starsky Barnes for the use of their ‘Wizard of Oz’ promo shot for the front cover. There are numerous local shows on and we do encourage you to send in pics and posters in advance to advertise in the what’s on section. It’s good to see what is on further afield too. We shall be popping over to Cambridge for a bit of Ice Skating fun. What could be more Christmassey ? well, actually Boo Herewdine’s Concert at the Maltings also appeals with a ‘Pentateuch’ of Celebrities (including Phill Jupitus) to entertain us. We also hear more from Kevin, our resident Eco expert with some useful, and ‘heart warming’ energy saving tips. A good man to talk to if you want to keep those fuel bills down. We now all have permission to cuddle! I am looking forward to mixing myself a ‘Thirstytini’(see recipe on page 8) and settling down infront of the fire with my woolies on . From Madeleine and myself we wish you a safe, warm and enjoyable winter season. Happy Christmas and see you in the New Year!

First World War Centenary Concerts War broke out in Europe 100 years ago in the summer of 1914. The four years of conflict that followed cost the lives of millions of people, affected millions more and left long-lasting legacies in the countries involved. Here we feature three notable concerts in the cathedral in November. Over the traditional Remembrance weekend two local groups perform in Ely Cathedral. Ely Consort brings a contrasting programme, which includes “Christmas Truce’, an oratorio by Jonathan Rathbone and the timeless classic that is Faure’s Requiem. ‘Christmas Truce’ explores one of the most remarkable and poignant moments of the First World War - the spontaneous ceasefire at the front line in France on Christmas Eve. Taking the form of a narrative by a soldier who was there, it incorporates beautiful but long-forgotten carols which were sung in the trenches. The poetry is by Edward Thomas and a setting of the 23rd Psalm is sung in both English and German.

In July this year, Ely Consort travelled to Koblenz in Germany. They enjoyed some great acoustics in their venues and were well received, enjoying a warm welcome from the local audiences and the added bonus of good weather. Their performance is at 8pm on 8th November, so why not walk over after the fireworks and enjoy the concert! Theatre Matters, a group of Cambridge actors and musicians, have been awarded Grant funding to develop a project that will involve a performance of songs and poetry sitting alongside exhibitions of local history in the area. The final performance of a week long tour takes place in the Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral. For the first half of the evening the audience will engage with local life during WW1. This will be presented as history displays, talks, interviews, stories of local people and their lives and a free leaflet summarising recent research undertaken on local life during the Great War. Thanks go to the members of the Ely Society for their hard work in bringing this

REMEMBER

1914 It was Their Time 2014 It gave Us Ours Heritage Event: See what life was like during The Great War ‘They’ll Never Believe Me’: A new production telling the story of life on the battlefield and at home through songs and poetry of the time

‘They’ll Never Believe Me’ For the second half of the evening Theatre Matters will present a newly devised theatre production. Poetry and songs from the period are used to tell the story from call up and thoughts on leaving home, through life in the trenches to the aftermath of war and peacetime at home. So the audience is taken on a journey with the soldiers and experiences what life was like for those left behind at home, creating a powerful Act of Remembrance. And so we come to the final concert of the Cambridge Musical Festival (12th – 22nd November). More information about the world class programme can be found at: http://www.cammusic.co.uk. Incidentally, on 14th November there is a rare opportunity to see one of the most influential 20th century music makers, Philip Glass, performing in person some of his most enduring music. This concert is at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge on 14th Nov. http://www.cornex.co.uk For the festival finale, Britten Sinfonia bring to Ely Cathedral Britten’s War Requiem (Sat 22nd November). This is a huge work, commissioned originally to mark the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral in 1962. They are joined by the choirs of Girton College and the choir and choristers of Jesus College Cambridge. The movements of the Mass for the Dead are interwoven with poetry of Wilfred Owen written during World War 1. On the title page of the published music, Britten quotes Owen: ‘My subject is War, and the pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity.’ Tickets are available for all three concerts now from the Cathedral box office. https://tickets.elycathedral.org - Tel: 01353 660349

Profits will be donated to the British Legion

Drawing to a close in London, a major artistic installation entitled ‘Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red’ sees the Tower of London’s famous dry moat filled with over 800,000 ceramic poppies to create a powerful visual commemoration for the First World War Centenary. The ceramic poppies are available to buy for £25 each and the net proceeds, hoped to be in excess of £15 million if all poppies are sold, will be shared equally amongst a group of carefully selected Service charities including the Legion. http://poppies.hrp.org.uk

REAL Life Therapy The benefits of a day in the garden...

Have you ever spent hours weeding your garden in order to achieve seeming perfection and to fulfill your dream of an immaculate lawn with beautiful flower beds to compliment your efforts? Imagine standing back and admiring your work and experiencing the feeling of achievement, on the surface everything looks perfect; your efforts have completely changed the look and feel of your garden, for now.......

Why removing the root is more beneficial than cutting off the tops of the weeds. Let’s think about what happens when you leave the root of a weed behind: Given the right atmosphere, it grows again, thriving on the conditions that nature throws at it. Maybe it will grow the same size root as before, maybe it will grow stronger because the conditions are even more beneficial this time and maybe it will develop an even stronger root system to protect itself from being destroyed once again when you reach into your shed for the hoe! If the root is left behind, it repeats its natural cycle and follows the same pattern as before. IT GROWS BACK!

The sun continues to shine and in its turn, the rain penetrates the soil, providing the perfect breeding ground for tiny weeds that will soon appear and change your landscape once again. The realisation that nothing is permanent is hard to take in after all your efforts and soon all those tiny little roots that you left behind How does weeding relate to REAL Life? will take over the garden once again if left unattended, because you didn’t remove the If you are dealing with negative root! issues or feelings in your life that have been there for a long time, unresolved, maybe you are suffering Using advanced with a physiological issue that could Hypnotherapy techniques, be connected with emotional distress. combined with Counselling and Psychotherapy skills. We’re off to see the

Wizard!

C.A.T. (Campaign Amateur Theatre Company) have been delighting Ely audiences with their unique and fun loving productions since 1969. In the early days it was all very ‘Von Trapp’ with home-made props and costumes made out of curtains but as you can see from the fabulous costumes this year for ‘The Wizard of Oz’ they have come a long way! Stepping into the ruby slippers is Anastasia Barnes. She is very excited to be taking on this famous role. Anastasia joined C.A.T. in 2008 at the tender age of 11 appearing in the chorus of Sleeping Beauty. That was it, well and truly bitten by the stage bug she has been a regular member of the cast ever since. And that is what C.A.T. is all about, giving local young people the chance to express themselves and grow and learn whilst putting on a show - and of course, having a whole load of fun. It’s a family affair with Mum, Angie on production for the show and little Starsky Barnes as Toto the dog. The show is directed by Becky Green. Dance Capt. is Lisa Bushell and Aaf Dawes heads up the costume team. The Cowardly Lion is played by Gaz Brown, the Tin Man by Martin Kemp and the Scarecrow by Adam Hebbard. It’s going to be a great show and is on at Ely College from 19th - 21st December. Tickets: £8 /£5 U16. From Burrows Book Shop, 9 High Street Passage, or book online at: (small charge) www.cately.ticketsource.co.uk There’s a chance to get a sneak preview of the show at Ely Christmas Light Switch On as they will be on stage performing during the evening on 28th November 4-8.30pm (Market Place)The lights go on at 6.45pm. It’s the 10th anniversary year so this one promises to be even bigger and better than the last - Lots of live acts and stalls to keep you entertained.

• Keep fireworks in a closed box and always follow the instructions.

Fire Crews ask Residents to stay safe during Festivities

Bonfire Night, Christmas and New Year are all times when we’re enjoying spending time with friends, often cooking heaps of delicious food and decking the halls. As our minds are distracted with the thought of planning a firework party or entertaining guests at Christmas, it is more important than ever before to ensure fire safety is at the forefront of our thoughts. First up is Bonfire Night and we always recommend residents attend an organised firework display instead of holding one at home. However, if you do use fireworks or light a bonfire, we would ask you to take on board some simple advice to ensure it is just fireworks that go off with a bang.

• Light them at arms length using a taper, stand well back and never go back to a lit firework. • Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them. • Don’t light bonfires in unsuitable weather, particularly in windy conditions, and never leave them unattended. • Build bonfires well clear of buildings, fences and hedge. • Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, and never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, rubber tyres, and batteries. • And as the festive season approaches, how about considering some of the following tips to ensure your Christmas cheer doesn’t go up in smoke: • Kitchens are a fire hotspot, so take care while cooking Christmas dinner. Never leave cooking unattended and turn off appliances when not in use. • Switch off fairy lights and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house. Make sure they confirm to the British Standard and never overload plug sockets. • Be careful when drinking alcohol while smoking or cooking. • Finally, make sure you have a working smoke alarm which is correctly fitted and works. And NEVER take the batteries out to power presents! If you are off to visit friends and family – especially if they are elderly of vulnerable – then this is a good time to check they have a working smoke alarm.

If you’re concerned about a neighbour, friend or family member who is vulnerable and you think would benefit from a visit by the fire service to talk about fire safety, then contact us by emailing firefire@cambsfire.gov.uk or call the freephone number 0800 9179994. Find out the latest news, events and safety advice on at www.cambsfire.gov.uk and find us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Introducing....... Sally Thake Jewellery Sally Thake started jewellery making about 3 years ago, wanting some “me” time. So she took herself off to a one-day jewellery making workshop. Her beading ‘addiction’ began there and then. “Sourcing yummy beads is almost as exciting as turning them into something beautiful for someone to wear!” enthuses Sally.

Find me: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/SallyThakeJewellery www.facebook.com/pagesSally-Thake-Jewellery/393054300727201

(search sally thake jewellery on facebook) email: info@sally-thake.co.uk

Over time, her interests and skills developed into the two main loves which she sells today: intricate bead-weaving (small seed beads and a needle and thread), and using artisan beads, mostly ceramics, from talented bead designers, to create one-of-a-kind pieces. Both very different styles of jewellery but equally rewarding. You can see Sally at the Cathedral Centre Xmas Fayre on 29th Nov, on facebook and on her on-line store on www.Etsy.com, a worldwide marketplace to buy and sell unique goods.

The Romantic way to save energy! 29

Energy being wasted through gaps and leaky windows and doors cost you money. You wouldn’t stand outside emptying your wallet down the drain, so why waste energy. After all, energy is money. So, this month, as we enter the heating season, we take a look at draught-proofing, more on heating and staying warm 1) Close any open chimneys using a fireguard, a chimney balloon, or a specially designed panel. Ask at your local DIY store for the best solution for your chimney.

2) Add weather-strips around windows, outside-facing doors, and your loft hatch. 3) Use a tube of normal household sealant to fill in gaps between the floor and the skirting board, around the window frame, and anywhere else you spot a gap that could let cold air in. 4) Double lined curtains that hang to the floor or BEHIND radiators help a great deal. 5) If you have open stairs from a room you ‘live’ in, consider fitting a heavy curtain. No point having the heating on downstairs when it all goes up!

6) This is the time of year we get the box of blankets out. Keeping warm is about insulating yourself and your house before burning fuel 7) Cuddling. Probably the best form of heating and so much more cost effective than whacking the heating up! 8) Candles. Not only to they save you money on lighting, they do give off heat and makes the cuddling even more enjoyable. 9) Move around. The more you move, the less heat you need. It really is that simple. 10) And finally, one of Mrs Holland favourites at this time of year when it gets a bit nippy first thing…. No more electric kettle. Water is boiled on the gas cooker (I use a camping stove in the workshop) not only do you heat the water and get the old fashioned whistle, but you get a five minute blast of heat in the kitchen that should see you through till you’re up and running.

Choose Reusable Nappies! It may surprise you that modern reusable nappies are very different from traditional terry towels: slim-fitting one-piece constructions that come in a range of designs, colours and patterns, with no need for soaking. According to Helena Akerlund at Ely Nappy Library this is why some parents are put off trying reusable nappies. People think of terries as labour intensive and difficult to fasten, but mocern reusable nappies are as easy to use as disposable nappies. Parents who choose reusable nappies do so for different reasons – here are just four:

2. Environment: Washing and using nappies again means a huge reduction in waste and cared for sensibly they have a carbon footprint up to 40% lower than disposables. 3. Saving money: Even with washing costs included, reusable nappies can save parents at least £500 from birth to potty training.

To find out more and to try a range of nappies, contact Ely Nappy Library, which offers free nappy demonstrations and free or low-cost trial kits. www.elynappylibrary.org.uk

4. The cuteness factor: Some nappies are highly sought after for their gorgeous prints, limited editions and matching outfits.

1. Comfort: Reusable nappies are made from breathable fabrics and are incredibly soft against baby’s skin, with no increased risk of nappy rash.

Five is surely one of the most fascinating numbers in our counting system. Fingers, the atomic number of boron - these are just two of the things that have something to do with the number five. Channel 5 - the list goes on and on. And who could ever forget the 60’s beat drummer, Dave Clark Five? Being as I am in a somewhat skittish mood brought on by the

But these Magi were given a sign – a star to follow. “Why was that,” you might ask – well simply because they were open – they were already searching for God – and God honoured their honesty. They were among Jesus first followers. ICYMI – Christmas (In Case you Missed It!) Christmas – well let’s face it – it makes us all a bit crazy. Over-shopping, over-eating, over-drinking, too many family visits, too much TV, too many places we HAVE to be and people we HAVE to see. Surely there must be more to it than this? How could I find out? Where are the signs? I’m assuming none of us would have been around 2014 years ago when Jesus arrived – and In Case You Missed It – that was the

first Christmas Day; but the story goes that Jesus was immediately seen as different – as special. Right from the start people who read the signs were saying he is God! Now wouldn’t that be something to celebrate? And just who was reading the signs? Well the most famous ones were the most unexpected - we call them the “Three Kings” – but the Bible and history tell us they were the Magi – probably from Iran (Persia) - probably magicians or sorcerers – not people normally seen as friends of God.

It’s the same for us today – the signs are there – for any of us who care to look. This Christmas why not look for the signs – God will reveal himself to you. In Case You Missed It there are nine great Christian churches in Ely – take your pick - turn up – you will be welcome - and ask God to reveal himself to you – to show you the signs. Like the Magi – you might get to invite Jesus into your house, your family, this Christmas – and you won’t regret it. Chris Hill Rector, St Mary’s
