From your editor... Hello and welcome to the Nov/Dec issue of the Elyi Magazine. We are delighted to be featuring so many local groups and events. In this issue we have such a diverse selection of articles! Matt Harvey brings us a taste of the theatrical productions going on and Tony Winchester invites us to spend a day in the countryside at Cottenham Point to Point. Also, Lis Every tells us what she has been up to - I reckon she has to be the busiest mayor on the planet! I really enjoyed my visit to the Pos+Ability exercise and rehab group last month - a charity close to my heart. Read the article about them on page 32. It’s no accident that there are quite a few articles and adverts about care and support for the less able people in our community. Let’s have a caring Christmas! As ever, many thanks to those who have submitted information, dates, updates, posters and suggestions. With your help we continue to make this little magazine truly about Ely and its people. However, we sometimes feel that we are only scratching the surface - so much going on so little time to gather the info! Anyway, with your help we are getting better and better. Please do keep sending stuff in and if there’s room (and it is of public interest) we will do our best to print it. Bridget

From your advertising manager... A huge thank you to all of our advertisers who have contributed enormously to making the magazine such a success. You have helped the magazine to grow and aided us in our mission to reflect the richness of Ely life - which is of course our ethos. Advertising in print media is still one of the most trusted and effective ways of building brands. With 10,000 copies distributed, the Elyi now engages more and more readers across the area and supports local events, charities and non-profit groups with low cost (often free) publicity. Go us! We think that a conservative estimate of our readership at the moment is about 35,000 readers with magazines being read multiple times in households or drop-off points. Our advertisers are reporting back an excellent response to advertising. From January, we reach another milestone in our production - the magazine goes monthly. In addition to the hard copies, advertisers get the opportunity to be posted on our facebook page, website and online ISSUU version which enables the magazine to be read on your phone or computer. Simply download and
4 read. All included in your advertising price. We have an advertising package to suit all businesses, please give me a call if you would like more information. I am very happy to talk to people (my favourite pastime!) and create a cost-effective bespoke package that will suit your business. We like to go the extra mile! Elisabeth Every Mayor of Ely After the lull in Mayoral activities in the summer holidays, as I write this, the calendar is starting to get really busy again as we go into the winter. The clocks have gone back, followed by Halloween, Guy Fawkes Night and there are less than 9 Fridays until Christmas! This is such a lovely time of the year. Every weekend there are bazaars and fairs to attend organised by dedicated and hard-working volunteers raising money for their charities and organisations. It is also the time that the City of Ely Council is able to make grants to not-for-profit charities and organisations. These bids demonstrate the diversity and high level of good work undertaken by volunteers.
the Ely Women’s Institute’s dinner celebrating 100 years of their organisation where we sang a rousing chorus of ‘Jerusalem’ and the New Connexions Church which meets at St Mary’s School celebrated its 7th birthday. Another great event was the Library’s Summer Reading Challenge Awards presented to the young people who read 6 books during the summer holidays. The young people were buzzing about the books they had chosen and how they loved reading. I also thoroughly enjoyed handing out the prizes for the Prickwillow Ploughing Competition recently and the annual Potato Race.
It’s been a busy time for anniversaries: Vera James Home’s 25 years Celebration Fair and

9 scheduled for 20th October at the Maltings. Both support our commitment to more actively seeking our residents’ views.
The Ely Standard Business Awards Finalists / Lis Every with Luke & Dan of Infiniti Graphics who were shortlisted as finalists this year.
In October, The Lady Chapel was again the venue for the Ely Standard Business Awards. I was delighted to be asked to say a few words to welcome the finalists and to share in their anticipation of becoming a winner. I know many of them through working with the Chamber of Commerce and Cathedral Business Group. Many take part in the 6th form student mentoring programme and some I have
taught! It’s always rewarding to see how well students have done since leaving school. It is a busy time too for the City Council as we finalise our business planning process which informs budget decisions. Our new more interactive website goes ‘live’ in October alongside the launch of our new Community Forum,
Day to day residents’ queries form a regular part of our councillors’ work. Early active intervention by the City Council has resulted in heritage lights being retained in our wonderful City. The Christmas lights should soon be twinkling away with the Switch On on planned for Friday 27th November! An action packed few months but really rewarding and great fun! There’s always something to do in Ely!

11 To best help our clients with ever increasing and complicated legislation from HMRC we undertake continuous training, to keep abreast of the changes, therefore taking the pain out of everyday compliance obligations.
Red Shoes Accounting Services, situated in Littleport, has now been running for six years. The firm was setup by Victoria Cooper, a Chartered Certified Accountant, who has over 20 years experience in the accounting profession. With a wide range of services available such as bookkeeping, payroll, VAT, corporation tax, management accounting, self-assessment tax returns and a whole load more, we at Red Shoes Accounting Services pride ourselves on providing top quality professional accountancy and tax services from a small firm environment.
One of the new challenges facing our clients today is Auto Enrolment. To encourage more people to save for their retirement, the government have introduced a law so ‘all employers’ have to enrol their workers into a workplace pension if they’re not already in one. The aim is to help more people have another income, on top of the state pension when they retire. Pensions can seem complicated, that’s where we come in, we can help set it up and process it for you. Auto Enrolment is the statutory requirement on an employer to have an appropriate pension scheme, arrange for most of the workforce to be automatically enrolled in the pension scheme, and pay pension contributions into the scheme. A lot of work will be required before the staging date; you will need to consider how many workers will be required to be auto enrolled in a pension scheme, estimate how much auto enrolment is going to cost you as an employer, choose an appropriate pension scheme, and consider how you are going to communicate with your workers about auto enrolment.

Community Oil Buying Scheme Now is a good time to consider your heating oil requirements for the colder months ahead. If you rely on oil to heat your home, community building, church or business premises, you might like to consider joining Cambridgeshire ACRE’s community oil buying scheme. Through their partnership with AF Affinity Limited, a subsidiary of Anglia Farmers Limited,
the scheme makes the most of collective purchasing power. The larger the order placed, the more likely the heating oil suppliers will offer a reduced price for the scheme’s members. The annual membership fee for domestic users is £20 and that covers as many oil orders as you need during the course of a year. Cambs Acre suggest that members need to order around 1000 - 1500 litres a year to achieve sufficient savings to justify the membership fee. If you go to the website there is an easy, online ordering system and they will even send out email reminders each month so you’ll never forget to order oil again. To find out more about the Scheme, visit www.cambsacre.org.uk/community-oilbuying-scheme.php or call Alison Brown on 01353 865029.

Victorian Celery Crop Hailed as ‘the winter asparagus’ Fenland celery dates back to the Victorian times when the crop was specially grown in the Fens for sale in the Christmas markets in London. It was extremely popular and became a feature of the Victorian Londoner’s Christmas dinner. Cambridgeshire producer G’s Fresh revived Fenland celery a decade ago and after bringing the 150 year old crop home to London’s prestigious New Covent Garden Market, Fenland celery quickly attracted a
loyal following of chefs and foodies. Now it is available nationwide, through good retailers looking much the same as it did 150 years ago with its leafy top and pale white stick, cut to a point by hand, in the traditional way. Hamish Mellor is the grower behind Fenland celery. He takes great pride in the crop recently being given Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status under the European Protected Food Names Scheme making it the first English vegetable to be given a PGI status. The status is recognition of the uniqueness of this crop. Only Celery grown in the traditional way in the Fens
Fenland Celery Grower: Hamish Mellor
can be called Fenland Celery in the same way that a proper traditional Cornish Pasty and Parma Ham has to adhere to strict standards. The rich Fenland soil gives the celery its nutty, sweet flavour and famous crisp crunch. Fenland celery is available to buy from mid-October through to the end of December in independent retailers up and down the country and the following national supermarkets; Marks & Spencer, Waitrose and online through Ocado. New Covent Garden Market supplies Fenland celery to London chefs and restaurants. Fenland celery will also have a stall in the Ely Farmers market. www.fenlandcelery.com Twitter- fenlandcelery

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH FREE - Street Signs To establish a Neighbourhood Watch scheme is very easy and normally there is just one cost involved; that of providing the street signs that usually are placed on convenient lampposts. For most schemes two signs are required at the cost of £12 each. The City of Ely Council has kindly donated money so that residents within the City of Ely can establish a scheme without this additional cost. Although the funds are expected to last for some months, it is a case of “first come first served” and thus it would be wise not to “put off until tomorrow what can be done today”. It is an established fact that neighbourhood watch helps to reduce crime in a locality and it is for this reason that most insurance companies provide a discount on household premiums – so what have you got to lose! Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ely, Littleport and the surrounding areas and
Tim is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Point to Pointing - Fun in the Country
Tony Winchester has had an interest in point-to-point horse racing for most of his adult life. He writes regularly for two regional newspapers and is also a contributor to the racing web site, pointingea.com. Over the years he has owned a number of horses and has had a limited amount of success but admits his involvement is definitely for love not money!
There has been a racecourse at Cottenham since the 19th Century and in March 1870 the course was visited by the Prince and Princess of Wales to attend the Grand National Hunt Steeplechases. March seems to have been an important month for Cottenham. In March 1946 it held the first Post-War pointto-point. The newspaper report of the event read “Cambridgeshire Harriers organised the meeting, and although the weather was cold and there was a high, blustering wind, everyone enjoyed themselves. The racing was excellent, with very few falls.”
There will also be trade stands, a beer tent and on site catering although many racegoers bring their own picnic. Entrance is around £10 to £15 per person and at Cottenham this often includes a free programme. Under 16’s are usually free although different courses have different entry criteria. Cottenham is one of the earliest meetings each season and this year is no exception when it opens the season on Sunday 29th November with the Cambridge University United Hunts Club meeting. This will be an early start with the first race likely to be around 11.00 a.m.
As it is the first meeting, entries come from far and wide and it is not uncommon to find horses competing from all over the United Kingdom. It’s a good day out in the country – local papers usually announce final details the week before the meeting so keep a look out and why not come along and enjoy this historical country pursuit? Tony Winchester
Today nothing much has changed – pointing is jump racing as it used to be. It is defiantly amateur and done for fun definitely not money. At each meeting there will be a minimum of six races and at Cottenham, as well as traditional bookies ever willing to take your money, there is a Tote usually run by the Hunt or a local charity.
... come along and enjoy this historical country pursuit...

Local Deli Boxes Delivered Free To Your Door! Started by husband and wife team, Andrew and Teri, Harpers Deli Boxes from Ely offers a taste of East Anglia and was born out of a passion for food! Teri’s love of deli food began when she was just 16 and had her first job on a deli counter. From there her interest only grew more and more in the products and quality on offer. After a lot of deli and farm shop visits throughout East Anglia and lots of research, Andrew and Teri could not understand why more local deli’s were not stocking all the amazing produce made in East Anglia and so Harpers Deli Boxes was born. Harpers Deli Boxes provides delicious East Anglian produced deli products, such as salamis and cured meats, from producers just outside Cambridge and in Norfolk, cheeses made in Norfolk and Suffolk and sauces,
chutneys and specialist foods from all over East Anglia. They personally select and taste every product that goes into their boxes and you can tell from the excellent quality of all their food! Every two weeks they change what goes into each box so you never get the same box twice and each one comes with information about the products and some suggestions on how you can use them. Harpers Deli Boxes offer a unique, exciting and different food experience providing only locally made produce delivered to your home and they can deliver either as a one off box or you can get a unique Deli Box every month. Pos+Ability is a fantastic local charity providing structured exercise classes in Ely, Histon and Littleport for people living with a range of conditions. If you are recovering from a stroke or living with Parkinsons, Muscular Dystrophy or Multiple Sclerosis then Pos+Ability could provide just the graded exercise and stimulation you need. Typically people join the group after a referral from their GP or therapist and following a free taster session they can sign up for 25 weeks at a time. There is a small charge for each session. Each 2-hour session is split into two halves. The first half involves group, chair based exercise often ending with a spirited game of ‘football’ as it did in the Ely group we visited and then there is a break for tea and biscuits. In the second half people can choose from a range of different activities lead by the staff and volunteers. These include parallel bars for balance and mobility work, a wheelchair accessible exercise bicycle and books and games to practice conversation and cognitive skills. Individual goals are set for each person so that activities are of the right level and no-one feels they are being made to do something beyond their capabilities. This is really important for people coping with illness and disability as it gradually builds confidence and self esteem. If you or your carer are making the journey out of the house and coming along to the group you want to feel it’s been worth the effort and everybody at the Pos+Ability group we visited was clearly getting a lot out of it - just the
right amount of joking and banter so that people seem to forget they are meant to be exercising and have a great time. Pos+Ability staff have trained on a wide range of appropriate courses including Otago Strength and Balance Exercise, Chair Based Exercise, Health and Social Care, Moving and Handling, First Aid and, of course, all are DBS checked for work with vulnerable adults. Pos+Ability has made such a difference to individual lives since it was started in October 2011. “I enjoy the class on a Thursday, as it gives me the opportunity to exercise and to interact with other people. The staff who take our classes are very caring and very well trained, working with us on one to one basis. I also enjoy the memory and quiz games. Everyone is very friendly....it gives my wife the opportunity to meet her friends for coffee and relax. It benefits us both enormously.” Says group member Bill The group, like many charities, only keeps going because of the support of local volunteers in helping at groups, attending fundraisers, sitting on the Board of Trustees or some simply by making a donation. Thank you to the Thursday morning Ely group for their permssion to take photos.

Ely Table Tennis Club
E
ly Table Tennis Club has been running for many decades. Although originally based in Ely, the Club unfortunately lost the use of its premises a few years ago and now resides at Prickwillow Village Hall, just outside Ely. We run a weekly practice session on Monday evenings (7pm to 10pm) for anyone wanting to learn table tennis, get back into it, improve their technical skills and to compete at local league level or beyond. We have two club tournaments each year including a buffet and trophies, a local League Tournament in April which attracts players from all over the county plus various social gatherings. Although we have doubled our membership in the past few years, we are always looking for new members with experience at a competitive level to join our four teams in the Ely & District League alongside our team in the Cambridgeshire League.

during the Christmas season, you would think that buying local would be a luxury most people can’t afford. However in recent years there has been a conscious shift towards buying local. So what are the benefits? Well it’s not rocket science that if you spend your money in a local, family business the majority of the money stays there. Typically, for every £1 spent with a small or medium-sized business 63p stays in the local economy, compared to 40p with a larger business. According to a high street study conducted by American Express a couple of years ago, a thriving high street populated with independent businesses can make a positive difference of up to 17% to the value of your home.

The Ely Standard Business Awards were held on Friday 3rd October in the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral, a very spectacular setting. Thirty-nine businesses from Ely and the surrounding area were entered for awards. We are pleased to say that Peter’s Bridal Warehouse was one of the finalists for Customer Service Award, a significant acheivement in itself. However, to Peter’s surprise he was in fact awarded the esteemed Judges’ Award for the business who “shows great potential and is the one to watch”. Peter’s Bridal Warehouse strive to give excellent customer service and value for money, and are proudly displaying their winners certificate and trophy at their retail unit at Northfield Business Park in Soham.
Although Peter has been in the bridal wear business for over 40 years, this new retail unit has only been open for twelve months. Peter stocks dresses from size 8 to 36. and has over 170 dresses on display with prices from only £299 to £899, something for everyone’s pocket.

Volunteers Needed – Can you help? Care Network Cambridgeshire’s volunteers help older, isolated or vulnerable people to stay independent and maintain social contact. People we’ve helped say: “I’m so grateful to you as I was in so much pain at the time and didn’t know who to turn to. I am really very grateful. You really made such a difference in my life. Thank you, thank you.” “It made me feel like there were people out there who cared” We offer help in three different ways: Our Help at Home volunteers offer short term, practical help and emotional support to people during difficult times such as illnesses or following a hospital stay, volunteers
do tasks such as shopping, collecting prescriptions or calling in for a chat. Our Community Navigator volunteers enjoy researching and providing information so that older people can access enjoyable or useful activities which they otherwise wouldn’t have known about Maybe you are interested in setting up your own group or activity to support older or vulnerable people? Our Community Development team can help you achieve that.
Could you be part of our volunteer team? A few hours a month can make a real difference to people’s lives.
