Hello! In this issue we celebrate some of the events over the summer but also look forward to some autumn fun. The winner of the £25 Amazon Voucher Draw finding all 5 treasure chests was Sharon Brumby. Well done! You downloaded the app (got it to work) scanned the pages and sent in the page numbers. Great! We are turning the competition over to the kids this time in our seasonal ‘find the animated pumpkin’ competition. See page 21 for details. Same idea, find the blue dots, scan, locate the pumpkins (5) and send in the page numbers to be entered into the draw. As usual we feature local groups and charities. We really do try our best not to turn people away and have managed, yet again, to accommodate everyone that has sent in information and publicity. We are particularly pleased to welcome Ted Coney and Mike Rouse who bring a touch of humour and history to our pages as well as two leading political ladies Lis Every and Lucy Fraser who tell us about their activities promoting Ely interests. Matt Harvey flags up some local shows and Adam Faber goes in search of a very Canadian Sport, ice hockey! Were proud to say that we have now been able to increase circulation to 10,000 copies, due to the fantastic support we are getting and Madeleine has now established drop-off points in surrounding villages. We estimate with copies left in public places and the door-to-door delivery that we could have a readership anywhere up to 30,000+. The copy date for the final issue of 2015 (Nov/Dec) is October 15th so don’t delay. Last year it was pretty hectic with editorial flying in faster than owls to Hogwarts so don’t delay, think ahead and get your copy to us in good time to avoid disappointment. Elisabeth Every Mayor of Ely
Nearly 3 months into my second term, I continue to be amazed at the generosity of people who so freely give their time to support local organisations, charities and events which benefit others.
It has been a particularly busy time in the community and I have been delighted to have been invited to so many events. Many have involved the great work of our young people, including the Passing Out of the Soham Police Cadets, Awards to City of Ely students, the final judging of the Isle of Ely Festival Young People’s Short Story competition, the Police Commissioner Awards for Youth and Awards for the Italian Summer School. A real testament to our fantastic young people. Community highlights included Aquafest, organised by the Rotary Clubs of Ely. Despite the earlier rainy start it proved to be one of the most successful so far with lots of stalls, exhibitions of dance, dog handling, belly dancing and the always exciting raft races. A real fun day out for the family! To mark the end of Ramadan, our local Indian restaurants worked together to produce a free Curry Feast in the Market Place which was enjoyed by over 220 people. Thank you to the organisers for this unique experience. Could it become an annual event?

A Message from MP for South East Cambridgeshire, Lucy Fraser. I am honoured to have been elected the MP for South East Cambridgeshire. I have spent a lot of time in and around Ely and it is a pleasure to represent such a wonderful city. Since my election I have been working hard on issues that matter to us: fairer funding for schools, fighting for infrastructure, ensuring access to quality healthcare and championing Cambridgeshire business. These are the issues that people in Ely and the rest of the constituency said mattered to them, and I am keen to ensure that I get the best deal possible for South East Cambridgeshire. In Ely, these issues are particularly important. I met with staff and patients at the Princess of Wales Hospital to listen to their views
on the NHS, healthcare and services in Cambridgeshire. I have also been pushing for work on the Ely Bypass to begin, and met with the minister in July. I am pleased that this much needed project will go ahead as scheduled for the benefit of everyone in Ely. Ely is a thriving city and it is always a pleasure to meet with residents, schools and businesses. I stopped by the Market Square for the Ely Independents Day in the summer and it was a pleasure to see so many successful local businesses. I am looking forward to my upcoming visits to Ely: I will be judging King’s
Established in 1939
We meet on Wednesday for a light lunch when we have the opportunity to chat and make friends. Our secondary aim is to raise funds for local charities which is done in an atmosphere of fun. The annual Ely Aquafest which we have now staged for 37 years is enjoyed by families both local and beyond. The club is open to both men & women. We meet at The Witchford Playing Fields Pavilion at 12pm for 1pm. For further information please contact Mike Copping on 01353 740236 or Email oricopp@talktalk.net

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile!
It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Ely, Littleport and the surrounding areas and
Tim is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

21 This little section of the magazine features things to do and get involved in for our younger Ely residents. 501 Short Story Competition page 22 Mr Simms and Burrows Bookshop teamed up earlier in the year to run the 501 short story competition and you can read about that and next year’s event over the page. It’s a great incentive to get working on those story writing skills. You can read the winning entries on the 501 book still on sale in Burrows to get an idea of what is expected, but why not get working on your entry now ready for next March? You should be able to produce a humdinger of a story with 7 months preparation! Undley Pumpkin Patch page 23 I’m looking forward to popping over to Beck Row this October to have some pumpkin themed fun at Undley Pumpkin Patch. If you take this magazine with you, one of your family can get into the maize maze for free! Well worth the little drive out of Ely to Beck Row. While we are on the subject of pumpkins have a look at the St. Mary’s events too page 23. If you are looking for some fun at Halloween
that focusses more on light than dark then the church are running an October holiday club this year ending in a light party in the church rooms on 31st Oct. Same night as the fireworks but looking at the timings you could do both! Find the Pumpkins Competition! Lastly we have a little competition for you. Search for the LAYAR app for iphone or android phone, download and then scan pages to find hidden items.Last month the technically challenged grownups amongst the readership complained that they couldn’t get it to work so we are going to see if the kids can do better! Don’t forget to ask your parent or carer if its ok to download the app. (CLOSING DATE: 1ST OCTOBER) So, can you find the 5 animated pumpkins hidden in the magazine using the LAYAR app? Firstly hunt for blue dots in the magazine. If you spot one, scan the page with your phone to find the pumpkins. (Not every page has one) All we need is the page numbers to enter you into the competition to go into the draw to win a £25 Amazon Voucher. Send your 5 page numbers to: editor@elyimagazine.com or by facebook message / elyi magazine

Holiday workshops coming soon – book now!
A short story competition run by Burrows Book Shop and Mr Simms Sweet Shop. Sixteen young writers have had their stories – all less than 501 words long – accepted for publication into a specially commissioned book which is available at Burrows. ‘The judges had a hard job choosing from the entries,’ says Annabel of Burrows. ‘The standard was incredibly high and both judges have highlighted the amazing response to the competition’s very first year.’ Celebrated children’s authors Pippa Goodhart and Julian Sedgwick were the judges this year and they attended the event to congratulate the entrants and to award prizes. David at Mr Simms tells us about next year’s competition. ‘During this autumn term we’ll be getting in touch with all 27 of East Cambs’
primary schools to tell them about Ely 501 2016. Annabel and I will then be visiting any or all of them by request in early January next year. Once again we’ll be asking for their best entries of short stories on any theme and answering questions on how to write an award-winning story.’ Entry forms will be issued through the schools for entry by Friday 25 March 2016. There will be two age groups: 9 and under, and 10 to 13. and three winners in each category, including a Star Winner in each age group who will receive a unique trophy. Each winner will see their stories printed into a specially commissioned book and we’ll be holding a ceremony in early August 2016 to congratulate the winners and hand over their prizes.

Tel: 01353 776312 Mob: 07760 290332 www.woodburningstoveinstallation.co.uk There are many reasons to choose a wood burning stove over an open fire or a conventional central heating system: 1. Wood burners are highly efficient and much cheaper to run than electric or gas central heating. 2. Wood is still relatively cheap, compared to the cost of running electricity and gas through the home which is affected by a third party who can control the price and availability based on market conditions. 3. A wood burning stove projects heat into the room rather than it disappearing up the chimney. 4. Wood burners are less messy than an open fire. 5. They are a safe option in the family home. 6. Wood burners are perfect for creating a warm, cosy atmosphere on cold days and winter nights. There are many different log burners available on the market to suit your particular house type. City of Ely Flower Club Our Annual Show held in July included a floral competition followed by a talk from Michael Thelwall on the work of Maggie’s Wallace, Cambridge, which provides free emotional, practical and social support to people affected by cancer. We have been collecting funds for the charity over the year through our different events and were pleased to be able to present Michael wth a cheque for £400.
Grace Bent presents a cheque for £400 to Michael Thelwall from Maggie’s Wallace.
This was followed by a quiz and everyone had a good time. There were numerous exhibit entries for our competition for the 5 different Classes.
Pictured (left to right); Grace Bent, Chairman; Winners:- Rebecca Jarvis, Margaret Dooling; Ann Middleton, Joyce Svensson, President and Lynda Ingram
It was wonderful to see the hall full of such sensational displays. This can take place in the local community or at their nearest Hospice, which for Ely is Milton Hospice. These range from popular big events such as the Cambridge Abseil, Coffee mornings, Stretham Charity Bowls Day in August, to collections at your local supermarkets. You can get involved by coming along to our events or volunteering your time to help the charity.
The EACH Ely Friends Group committee have regular meetings and are looking for new members, or if you are interested in helping out at events but not being part of the group, we can send you details of upcoming volunteer opportunities on a regular basis. You would be very welcome to come along to a meeting to meet me and the committee members and to find out more about EACH. To find out more about the events in your area or to volunteer your time to help out and make some new friends please contact me Lucy Glover on 01223 204916. Thank You for your support.

Worn out Member! I used my 1931 Morris Minor twice in the summer to advertise Ted Coney's Family Portraits. On Friday 3rd July I stood in the market square beside the car in sweltering conditions for five hours, giving out flyers about my pop-up gallery. I should have know better, because although the car appears in some of my paintings, all it did was to attract men of a certain age, reminiscing about the cars they had owned over the years. My advertising strategy was more subtle when I took the car to Aquafest. This time, as well as delivering the Mayor to the opening ceremony, I was also using the Morris to raise money for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal by allowing the public to be photographed with the car, in return for a donation. Another exhausting day as I was there for ten hours. When I came to leave, the battery was flat
and I couldn't get the damn thing started! Luckily, I have been in the AA for over fifty years and a charming chap arrived and quickly sorted it out. When I asked him if he could follow me home, just in case the car stopped again, he said he would as long as he could take a photograph. When I looked at his breakdown report later, he had written 'Battery flat and couldn't be started by handle. Member worn out’. I knew exactly what he meant! Ted Coney
Ted’s virtual tour can be found on his website at: www.tedconeysfamilyportraits.co.uk and costs just 99p... Bargain!
The Royal British Legion: YOUR LEGION NEEDS YOU!! The Royal British Legion exists to help members and ex-members of the Armed Forces and their families who are in need. They do this through the annual Poppy Appeal, to which members of the public generously donate and this amounted to around £40M in 2014. All of the monies from this Appeal are used for this purpose and none is used for the running and administration of the Legion organisation. These costs are covered by the Legion Members annual fees, which from 1st October is £16. However, this is becoming more difficult because of falling membership numbers. For example, in Ely in the 1960’s and 70’s, following WW2 and National Service, the number of members was several hundred here in Ely. Because many of those members have now passed away and, despite attracting some new members in recent years, the total membership of Ely Branch is around 50. Therefore, the Legion needs YOUR help. Please consider joining to help your local branch.
There are quarterly meetings, but you don’t have to attend, just by joining you will be helping the Legion to continue it’s good work. If you wish to join please email the Ely Chairman, Stan Geering, using stangeering@tinyworld.co.uk or phone him on (01353) 666021

A Fresh Start for the Maltings! The Maltings Ship Lane, Ely CB7 4BB The Maltings has some exciting plans afoot! Over the months of August and September, The Maltings’ new venue manager Deborah Jones has told us what she is up to! As a result of recent newspaper coverage Deborah has not found herself short of ideas for the future plans at the versatile city venue. The article precipitated a steady stream of ideas and suggestions from local residents about what they would like to see the building used for and the types of events that are wanted.
Deborah said, “I have been contacted by many local people and businesses offering their ideas on what sort of events they would like the Maltings to be used for. We certainly won’t be short of ideas for what we are planning.”
She continues, “Since I arrived in Ely, it’s been so fantastic to see how much the local community care about the Maltings and are really behind getting the venue back up and running again, I’ve been inundated with ideas which has really helped me to have a very good sense of what people want and I’ll be trying my very best and working hard with the aim of providing some quality events and entertainment over the coming year ”
Currently being booked is a brand new Comedy Standup Night that The Maltings hopes to host bi-monthly, The Ultimate Beatles Tribute Band – as seen on the one show and winners of best tribute act 2014, amongst some other fantastic bands and tribute acts, Children’s Halloween and Christmas parties, a Charity Fundraising ball, Corporate Christmas party nights, more Live music events and much more to
entice local people to make the most of the venue. Deborah has said she is also very busy working on a new brand, marketing materials, website, social media and what’s on guide that people can put up on their fridge and plan in. As well as this, she is currently recruiting a small team to help her re-launch a bar and small pop up cafe offering. “Things are very busy and we are working hard to re-launch a regular set of events from October onwards --- watch this space!” Stay in touch! Follow updates and the story on twitter / facebook pages and watch out for what’s on guides being published by September. Twitter @TheMaltingsely Facebook page will be launching by end August 2015

We are a recognised Royal Yachting Association (RYA) training centre and have also been awarded RYA Champion Club status for our race coaching. Sailing takes place between Easter and the end of October on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Full details can be found on our website www.elysailingclub.org

Ely Watercolour Workshop
The Ely Watercolour Workshop is a friendly group, with some members who have been part of the group since it started in the autumn of 1994. We range from experienced to beginners. We are a self-help group and members themselves, sometimes give demonstrations. The weekly programme suggests a topic for people to paint, or people can always work on their own project if they prefer. It is informal, with opportunities for coffee and discussions or facilities for more serious painting. We meet in Ely Community College, and in the summer term try to paint outside, at various venues, weather permitting. We hold 2 exhibitions in the Almonry Restaurant each year to sell members’ work and raise money for local charities. Price: £12 per term Tel: 01353 776103

The Story of Ely by Mike Rouse coming soon... “The Story of Ely in 80,000 words with 100 pictures”, that’s the publisher’s brief and the contract that I am working on for completion at the end of October. 80,000 words to cover the legend of Saint Etheldreda, the destruction of Ely by the Vikings, the re-foundation, Hereward the Wake, Abbot Simeon and the building of the Cathedral, powerful Bishops, the genius of Alan of Walsingham, the dissolution of the monastery, Oliver Cromwell, the coming of the railway, and the gradual growth of the small market town of Ely – it all has to be there. Most of that story has already been covered in various books and research and it only needs turning into a narrative, but what of the more recent years? The challenge I face now is assessing what are
the really significant changes in recent years and who were / are the people who deserve their place in such a record? I would welcome any readers’ views on what or who should be included, for whatever reason. It could be shops, the market, businesses, pubs, cafes, sport, schools, because I know as soon as the book is published, there will be those who say ‘I’m surprised you didn’t mention...’! Someone may have a really good photograph that tells a story in itself. The Story of Ely, is all our story, so I would welcome any contributions for consideration and if I don’t include them all, then you can say ‘I’m surprised you didn’t mention...’ as it may be impossible to fit in everything. The easiest way for any reader to contact me directly is through email: m.rouse@homecall.co.uk I look forward to receiving all ideas. Mike Rouse

Coming up…Ely & The Performing Arts September/October 2015 A little look at some local, home-grown shows in the area. Matt Harvey, Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre As theatre groups start preparations for an exciting selection of Christmas (yes Christmas!) productions that include Peter Pan (from Campaign Amateur Theatre), Pirates of the Panto (from Littleport Players) and Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs (from KD Productions), we take a special look at two local groups taking shows to the ADC Theatre in Cambridge this September. Fresh from taking their Avenue Q show to Edinburgh Festival in August, Viva Group are bringing this lively, part flesh part felt musical show to the ADC Theatre from 10th -12th September.
Viva Theatre Company Blending puppetry, musical theatre and comedy, the story revolves around Princeton - a bright-eyed college graduate who goes to New York City with big dreams and a tiny bank account. He soon discovers that the only neighbourhood in his price range is Avenue Q.
Matt Harvey Ely Arts Theatre www.facebook.com/elyartstheatre
Here Princeton and his new neighbours struggle to find jobs, dates and their everelusive purpose in life! With strong language and sexual references throughout, the show it is suitable for over 16yrs only. Shows start at 7.45pm. Tickets are £12/£9 conc. Break An Egg Theatre Company are also treading the ADC Theatre boards in September with their first original comedy play – Murder At A Funeral. (16yrs+) This brand new farcical production pays homage to Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit murder mysteries. But in this case, it’s very much whodidn’tdoit! The year is 1930. At Lady Flange’s wake, six specially selected guests arrive to find a nervous solicitor and determined police officer, ready to seek out the late aristocrat’s murderer. But the reading of her will reveals a second wicked dilemma that leaves them all only 60 minutes to solve.
Break An Egg Theatre Company Tickets are now available – £12/£9 concs for the 7.45pm shows on 17th, 18th and 19th September. You can purchase tickets for both Avenue Q and Murder At A Funeral from the ADC Theatre by going online at www.adctheatre.com or calling 01223 300085. You can also catch Witchford Amateur Dramatics Society at the Battle of Britain Anniversary Spectacular on Saturday 26th September at 7.30pm. Taking place at Witchford Village Hall and Playing Fields Association, the evening features the Huntingdon Big Band. Tickets are £15 through Witchford Post Office or contact: villagehall@ witchford.org.uk. Forties style dress is encouraged!

Sylhet Indian Restaurant
From the minute you walk through the door at Sylhet on Market Street, you will find the staff pleasant, friendly and attentive. The food is served well cooked and there is an excellent traditional choice on the menu. The Sylhet specialties are worth a try, using unique recipes they are very tasty, cooked to perfection and delivered piping hot and plentiful. Nothing was too much trouble and a special request not listed on the menu was no trouble at all. We think the traditional curries are very good value
for money. They are included in the Tuesday night dine in offer, which includes any starter, classic curry (Chicken or Lamb) a rice dish or naan bread for only £11. We took advantage of this offer and expected the quantity and quality to be compromised, how wrong we were. There was more than we could eat for even our hungry crew and we were very happy to be able to relive the food experience at home the following lunch time with the leftovers. It was a fantastic meal and a wonderful evening.
menu, the wine list has been specially selected by Anglia Wines, based on the High Street to complement the Indian cuisine. Sylhet’s quality food and great service make it a great night out any day of the week. To complete the Sylhet experience you can relax in your own home and enjoy a takeaway delivered to your door, place your order and pay online at www.sylhetely.co.uk
We enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere and didn’t feel rushed with our meal as the service was well timed and catered for our needs. In addition to the extensive

48 Adam, a Canadian living abroad, resides here in Ely with his wife Sarah. He views Ely and the surrounding area with a freshness that only a newbie can. He’s been exploring. Read on to see what he has been up to and what he makes of it ! It’s been too long since my last fix; my hands start to shake, I’m hot and sweaty, and I can’t even focus on what’s on the telly. I need some snow. I flip open the computer, trying to find a contact, a ‘Zamboni man’, someone who can get me what I need… Finally, I score a sweet find in a corner of Peterborough....ice hockey tickets! As a Canadian living abroad, there are some things I may never understand, such as why football players seem to fall over so much even though their playing surface isn’t frozen.
One thing I can come to grips with, though, is how fanatical the audience was at the Peterborough Phantom’s ice hockey game at the end of their season. The ‘Barmy Army’ were cheering, chanting, and banging drums as they blew their way into the league championships, ultimately coming away with the trophy. There were Phantoms, Tigers, and Eagles all vying for the top spot in the league, certainly I can’t be the only one wondering why there are no Eels? The first hurdle would be finding a playing surface, due to the fact that Cambridge has the nearest rink. A fellow Fenlander, Lyn Guest de Swarte may be the answer to that, with a dream to build an international ice skating venue in Littleport. Another enthusiastic fan of the ice, Lyn is a former speed skater, and has now begun her
mission to put together a business case for a 400 metre enclosed ice oval. “There are only 12 similar facilities in the world and I would love for Littleport to be number 13,” Guest de Swarte has told media. She’s been actively promoting her idea to Littleport Parish Council, MPs, and even has plans to approach Sport England and EU funding bodies.
I can’t be the only one wondering why there are no Eels? While others have written off the idea (it’s been called a ‘white elephant’ and ‘pipe dream’), I don’t begrudge Lyn the fact that she’s championing a cause that she believes in. I’ve been told that the British love a good moan, something I have yet to fully experience in my time in Ely, but after seeing an English Premier Ice Hockey League game I can attest to the fact that there are those who enjoy a rallying cry as well.
In an ice hockey rink, the spectators are a part of the game as well, their support or disapproval adds a little bit of extra weight on either side of the scales – teams really do play better with an enthusiastic crowd cheering, chanting, pounding drums, and putting on a spectacle of their own. Had the stands been empty I doubt the Phantoms would have played as well, and it was a close game. So here’s my voice, Lyn, along with a drum and a horn. While I haven’t seen the plan, I don’t think anything’s impossible (which is why I keep hoping the Montreal Canadians will someday win the Stanley Cup).

YPLittleport has an objective - to make a difference, not just with young people in the local area but to all ages.
It is the brain child of Phil Makin who has been running YPL and its associated projects for approximately 10 years. It has proved to be very successful in helping to bring the community of Littleport together. The YPL ARENA in Henry Crabb Rd is the location for Auctions and Sales and these run twice weekly; Wednesdays at 6pm and Saturdays at 11am. You have to enter your items by 4.30pm the day before. The Arena also houses newest project ‘Salvage and Trading’. The intention is to provide small start-up businesses with a cost effective, solution to sell their products with no long term commitment. You simply rent some space to display your for sale items and the area is looked after for you by YPL staff and volunteers. So you don’t have to be on site and can get on with other aspects of your business. The size of the units start at 8 x 6ft.
