Hello and welcome to the February Elyi Magazine. We hope you had a great start to the year. We have been working hard, but do you know, it is good to be back at it after the Christmas break isn’t it. It is actually possible to have too many mincepies! We bring you news of the Oxfam shop’s move up the High Street to no.7, from their corner spot where they have been for many years. There’s no better time to get involved if you were planning on offering some volunteering time. see page 10. This month, we have made some magazine changes too. Our Groups and Meets pages will be available via the online issue only for February and we plan to have them back in the print version for March and probably bi-monthly from then on. We know you love the hard copy but if you haven’t checked out the online version then please do! The easiest way to find it is via our Facebook page, on our website or you can go to: https://issuu.com/elyimagazine/docs/feb18
The February half-term is a busy week with Shrove Tuesday and Valentine’s day next to each other. Perhaps we’ll see you at one of the events at the Cathedral that week. The annual pancake race in the Cathedral is always a great photo opportunity, with fierce competition between staff and choristers. warmest wishes Bridget & Madeleine

Richard Hobbs Mayor of Ely In every Mayoral year there are many special occasions when as Mayor it makes you proud of our City and what a wonderful community we live in. One such occasion was at the City of Ely Military Band Christmas Concert when, on behalf of the Council, I bestowed the Freedom of the City on Malcolm Fletcher. This richly deserved honour was well received and demonstrated the commitment Malcom has given to the success of the band over many years. The Freedom is not given lightly as it is the highest honour a City can bestow on a citizen, and has only been bestowed five times before.
My family were invited to KD’s Annual Pantomime at the Maltings to see Beauty and the Beast. It was extremely professional and the true feeling of the pantomime season was achieved when I watched my 5 year old granddaughter and 2 year old grandson spellbound throughout the performance. Make sure you book for next year. City of Ely Military Band December 2017

On the 24th of February I will be holding a Mayor’s Charity Ball in aid of Pos+Ability, a charity which I am supporting to promote dementia awareness. This black tie event includes a 4 course dinner followed by dancing to the Umbrella Band. Tickets are £35 per head and available from me (Ely 610955). Your support would be much appreciated. I have been contacted by numerous people about the scruffiness of the City Centre. Knowing how hard shopkeepers and businesses work to keep their premises clean and tidy, it is up to us to support them and ensure our street furniture and litter bins are up to standard. The City Council is in the final stages of negotiations with the District Council to take over the responsibility of Tourism, Town Centre Management and Oliver Cromwell House. This should be completed by April. This change of responsibility will, hopefully enable us to work together to make changes for the better. Regards Mayor Richard

Oxfam Ely is Moving!
Oxfam in Ely are off to an exciting start for 2018. After over 30 years on the corner of High Street Passage, the shop has now closed, and will be opening in the early spring at 7, High Street (where Argos used to be). The Shop Manager, Dorothy Clark said “We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our supporters in Ely, those who shop with us, everyone who donates goods for us to sell, and especially our band of loyal volunteers who keep the shop going. We look forward to welcoming you all to the new premises soon”. The new shop will be much larger, and for volunteers, has the advantage of being all on one floor – previously everything had to be carried upstairs for sorting and pricing. It will have an expanded book section at the rear, offering a wide range of good quality fiction and nonfiction volumes – well worth a browse. You never know what you might find! There will be the traditional donated items of crockery, homeware, pictures and toys. We will have a good selection of entertainment including DVDs, CDs and a wide range of vinyl, covering almost all the music genres you can think of. The clothing area will contain a good range of women’s, children’s and men’s clothing, as well as accessories. So come and treat yourself to something new for spring! The front of the shop will have an expanded range of new items, carefully sourced from fair-trade and ethical suppliers. As well as a wide range of greetings cards, coffee, chocolate, cleaning and hair-care products, we will also be selling larger items such as rugs and baskets. 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
Oxfam’s Area Manager, Catharine Chester said, “We are very excited to be opening this new shop in Ely, and we warmly welcome all our supporters to come and see us in the new shop” The shop could not exist without our team of kind, talented, versatile and dedicated volunteers. With a much larger shop, we will need more volunteers, and would like applications from all interested members of the local community.
If you want to improve your CV, meet new people, learn different skills and do your bit to help fight global poverty Oxfam can help you. From a few hours to a few days a week, any contribution you can make is welcome. We have tasks ranging from sorting donated stock, serving customers on the till, displaying goods on the shop floor and window and researching unusual items. We will also start selling items online from our new shop, so if you are tech-savvy, or have an interest in photography we’d like to hear from you.
If you would like to volunteer please get in touch via email oxfamshopf2514@oxfam.org.uk, or ring 07810 504365.

Fun on the farm
barn owls and short-eared owls are regularly spotted hunting at dusk, rare turtle doves are heard ‘purring’ and hares darting into neighbouring fields. The Mammal Trust recently undertook a survey of the site and found a good abundance of field mice and bank voles. An enjoyable night of moth trapping also yielded a wealth of species.
Local community farm Willderland has been awarded a grant from Sanctuary Housing, and will be using the funds for a series of events open to the public.
Willderland member Kasia Brookes says, “it's great to leave the city for the weekend and spend time on Willderland farm, relaxing and reconnecting with nature.”
Willderland farm is a beautiful 4.5 acre plot located just outside of Haddenham. It was established in 2015 by a group of friends who shared an interest in farming and wildlife, and has gradually been taking on new volunteer members from the local community. The Willderland team started with an overgrown field and a plan to transform it into a small farm with a market garden, orchard, animals and infrastructure for visitors. So far, they have planted a variety of native fruit trees, embellished the hedgerows, started growing a few crops and built a compost toilet. Willderland is based on agroecological principles, aimed at growing produce sustainably and for the benefit of wildlife. The farm is already home to a host of creatures;
There are regular open days where volunteers help with planting, as well as wildlife survey days. It’s not all hard work; Willderland also hosts social events such as bonfire night fireworks and a summer party. In the long term, volunteers will get to reap the fruits of their labour once produce starts to be harvested and kids will be able to enjoy meeting the farm animals. The Willderland members are a friendly bunch and would really welcome new people of all ages. The events coming up are:

ELY 501 2018 COMPETITION In 2017 Ely 501 sold its entire print run on the first day of publication. This year Cambridgeshire’s creative writing challenge for children is aiming to go one better, and there’s a surprise in store too.
Little Be
Are you a Vintage or Ret
‘We received an astonishing number of entries,’ says joint organiser Annabel from Burrows Bookshop Ely. ‘Because of the incredibly high standard it meant we were able to print a record number of stories: 48 in total in our specially commissioned book. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to publish even more this year.’ The challenge is now in its fourth year and Annabel, together with David from Mr Simms Ely, will be visiting local schools to inspire children to put pen to paper. ‘It’s great that in this electronic age children still prefer to tell their stories without using a keyboard’ says Annabel. ‘That said we expect several entries to be sent to us by email.’ Award-winning children’s authors Mark Lowery and Julian Sedgwick are the challenge’s judges once more and with superb timing both are producing new eagerly awaited titles early on in 2018. Mark’s book is Charlie and Me which is already set to be translated into nine languages while Julian’s is Return to the City of Ghosts, the third and final instalment in his Ghosts of Shanghai trilogy. ‘Finally, we’re over the moon,’ says Annabel, ‘that we’ve been given special permission to reprint in this year’s Ely 501 a story written by a twelveyear-old whose books went on to be a worldwide phenomenon. For all our young entrants, surely that’s exactly the sort of inspiration they need!’ More details, and entry forms for the competition, are available from Burrows Bookshop High Street Passage Ely or Mr Simms High Street Ely. The closing date is 30 March 2018.

An 8-week course to explore what matters for a happy and meaningful life - together with a group of friendly, like-minded people. The course will run weekly on Thursdays from 7pm till 9pm from 19 April 2018, until 7 June 2018 at the Cathedral Conference Centre
Exploring What Matters is aimed at people of all backgrounds and has been shown to help people become happier and more caring. Each session has a theme, based on a 'big question', such as What really matters in life? Each session follows a similar format with an inspiring mix of learning and discussion. Week 1: What really matters in life? Lots of things are important in life, but how should we decide what really matters to us. This session explores whether a greater focus on happiness and wellbeing might be better for all of us.
Week 2: What actually makes us happy? We’re told that happiness comes from having more and earning more, but is this really true? Does happiness come from our circumstances or our inner attitudes? And can we learn how to be happier?
Week 3: Can we find peace of mind? Life can be highly stressful. In this session we’ll explore how to deal effectively with life’s ups and downs and cope with adversity. And we'll look at some skills which can help us be more resilient.
Week 4: How should we treat others? Our society appears increasingly individualistic and competitive. Is this just human nature or are we naturally altruistic too? How should we behave towards others - and can we learn to be more compassionate?
Week 5: What makes for great
Week 6: Can we be happier at work? Work is a huge part of our lives, but many of us find our work to be stressful and frustrating. Do happier organisations get better results? What makes us happy at work? And what can we do about it?
relationships? We're a social species and most of us know that our connections with others are vitally important. But what really affects our relationships and are there practical things we can do to enhance them? Week 7: Can we build happier
Week 8: How can we create a happier
communities? What does it mean to live well together - and why are some communities or societies much happier than others? In this session we'll explore how to create communities that are more caring, connected and happy.
world? This session brings together everything we've covered during the course. It aims to inspire each of us to live in a way that contributes to a happier world, not just for ourselves but for others too.
“I wholeheartedly support the Exploring What Matters course and hope that many thousands will benefit from it and be inspired to take their own action to create a happier world” The Dalai Lama, patron of Action for Happiness

Mikes’ Musings
Teacher, Author, Historian, Photographer, City Councillor and all round fount of knowledge, Mike Rouse shares with us a little of the history and culture of a life time spent in his beloved Ely.
I loved Christmas as a child, although my first memories are of wartime shortages and few presents. I loved the excitement of getting down the old suitcase full of the carefully saved Christmas wrapping paper and reusing it to wrap whatever small gifts there were. They were tied with wool or string, or an elastic band, so the paper could be saved. How my grandmother hated the coming of sticky tape and the tearing and subsequent waste of wrapping paper. I loved the ritual of Christmas Day, the traditional lunch, then listening to the King’s speech on the relay radio, then moving to the front room, the roaring fire and the tree and the presents and as long as I had the Rupert annual I was happy. Now Twelfth Night has passed and the Christmas decorations have come down and been put away, in the hope that they will function next year and again bring light and sparkle to the dullest, darkest time of the year. My children just about tolerate my enthusiasm for Ely’s Christmas lights and how I like to drive back through the town
at night time, if I have the chance, to look at them. They, of course, take all the decorations, colour and lights for granted. They have grown up in a technicolour world. I didn’t. The Ely of my childhood was one of the greyest cities imaginable. Many goods were rationed, the shops weren’t brightly illuminated and the streets were gas lit. Then right in the middle of the small town, totally dwarfing everything was one of the biggest, gloomiest buildings I imagined anywhere in the world. The Cathedral and the monastic buildings around it were a citadel within the city and many local people did not venture inside, except for those solemn and great civic ceremonies that were hosted there. People and children went again at Christmas perhaps when there was a candle lit processional service on Christmas Eve. How different it is today. The Cathedral is alive with colour and events welcoming us in the local community and visitors from all parts of the globe to enjoy a huge variety of colourful activities and take part in the traditional worship. Now the Cathedral is a place that banishes greyness, not epitomises it. Mike
THE LIONS CLUB OF LITTLEPORT
Once again we held our very successful Breakfast with Santa in December at The Almonry Restaurant in Ely. Our thanks to everyone involved especially Michael and Lesley Blakey, without whose help and expertise this event would not happen. We had a very busy time in the run up to Christmas and amongst other events we did our annual visits to Lily House and Vera James House, both residential elderly homes in Ely. Now, we look forward to our Easter Event in The Almonry gardens. It will take place on Saturday 24th March 10.30am - 2.30pm. There will be an Easter egg hunt, crafts, Tombola and lots of things for a family day out. Put it in your diary now. If you would like to join us, the club meets on the first Sunday of each month, but not in January, at Adams Heritage Centre Main Street Littleport at 2pm. Women’s World Day of Prayer (International and Interdenominational) FRIDAY 2nd MARCH 2018, 1.45pm at St Etheldreda’s Catholic Church, Egremont Street, Ely
Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer. On Friday 2nd March over 5,000 services will be held in the British Isles on the theme of ‘All God’s Creation is Very Good!’ The Christian women of Suriname wrote the service, and it has been translated into more than 95 languages and 1,000 dialects, to be used throughout the whole world on 2nd March, starting in Samoa as the sun rises, and ending as the sun sets off the coast of American Samoa. Suriname is located on the north-eastern coast of South America. With its vast rainforest and wealth of resources, Suriname asks us to pray 3838| |Elyi ElyiMagazine Magazine| |www.elyimagazine.com www.elyimagazine.com
for conservation and the protection of wildlife, through an awareness of pollution, misuse and abuse, as well as for the situation in Suriname and concerns for the future. The environmental crisis is also a crisis of global justice. The motto ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ resonates with us all. Why not come along and find out more about the theme and Suriname? Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at St Etheldreda’s Catholic Church, Egremont Street, Ely, starting at 1.45pm. This is not a day of prayer just for women – everyone is welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. Refreshments will be served after the service. 100 Hearts for 100 Years Pincushions were made by wounded soldiers to send home to their loved ones. Known as ‘Sweethearts’ these moving momentos, made with love, proved to be excellent therapy for troops recovering from the horrors that they had
experienced. Using a modern interpretation of the theme, the Armed Forces charity, SSAFA Wiltshire, have created one hundred hearts, one for each year since the Great War, which are on display in this wonderful exhibition.

East Cambs Libraries ELY In Ely the Librarian Theatre bring their production of “Alice in the Cuckoo's Nest”. Lewis Carroll’s classic story is re-imagined in the setting of a modern day mental institution. Although the show is family friendly, it is a far cry from the innocent adventure portrayed by Walt Disney's 1951 film version. Hopefully audiences of all ages will take something away from it, and it will help fuel important conversations about mental health. Doors open 30 minutes before each show, with refreshments available. The show lasts approximately one hour with no interval. It is suitable for adults, children 8 years plus and families. Ely Library, Friday 16th February at 7:30pm (doors open at 7:00pm). Tickets: £7/£4 concessions, on sale at www.librariantheatre.com and at the Ely Library, 6 The Cloisters, Ely, CB7 4ZH.

Suitable for adults and young people (minimum age 9 yrs, under 16s must be accompanied by adult). The running time is 1 hour and 30 minutes plus interval. Drinks and snacks (licensed bar) will be available for purchase. 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Highfield Ely Academy is one of the seven area special schools in Cambridgeshire. Our school has been through a rapid period of change recently in part due to the opening and joint leadership of Highfield Littleport, and in our joining the Active Learning Trust. However, we have more major changes on the way which will be really positive for our school and our community which our Governing Body will be very involved in as they move forward. Our Governing Body has vacancies which we need to fill with enthusiastic people who are willing to learn and be part of a proactive, forward thinking group who support and challenge the leadership team at Highfield Ely. THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST 1st - 3rd MARCH ELY MALTINGS The Importance of Being Earnest is the most renowned of Oscar Wilde’s comedies. It’s the story of two bachelors, John ‘Jack’ Worthing and Algernon ‘Algy’ Moncrieff, who create alter egos named Ernest to escape their tiresome lives. They attempt to win the hearts of two women who, conveniently, claim to only love men called Ernest. The pair struggle to keep up with their own stories and become tangled in a tale of deception, disguise and misadventure. The play is most famous for the domineering and battle-axe character of Lady Bracknell, which has recently become fashionable to be played by a man as well as a woman (most recently by David Suchet). Ely Amateur Dramatic Society (Ely ADS) are bringing this classic trivial farce to life in early March. The cast includes Jon Bolderson, Emily Howe, Natalie Burton, Sue Harrison, Shelley Gunn, Matt Harvey, Tony Ransome, Graham Stark, Ellen Olley and Melody Grace. And bringing his own unique interpretation to Lady Bracknell is Chris Hudson. The Importance of Being Earnest kicks off a season of plays for Ely ADS which is now in its 130th year. The first Ely ADS production was way back in 1888, before Oscar Wilde had even written Earnest! The show runs from Thursday 1st March to Saturday 3rd March 2018, at The Maltings, Ely. Tickets are £11 from box office (Burrows Bookshop, Ely 01353 669759) and online at: www.ticketsource.co.uk / elyamateurdramaticsociety (0.95p booking fee). www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 41
