WELCOME ...from the EDITOR Dear Readers, Brrrr...! I am huddled under a blanket here at Elyi HQ as I finish up this February edition. It’s not that we don’t have central heating, you understand, it’s that I feel I can’t really switch it on if I am the only one still up! The Elyi minions are all tucked up in bed and I am burning the midnight oil in the quest for those last little bits to fill a gap here and there, working out who goes where and trying to avoid the dreaded of all dreaded scenarios by making sure we don’t leave anyone out. After the rush of Christmas and New Year it is quite nice to have a slightly quieter month. There are still plenty of things going on in and around Ely you just have to look that little bit harder to find them. The Cathedral is the subject of two events in February; a talk by author Simon Jenkins hosted by Toppings and a separate large scale photographic exhibition featuring stunning pictures of the 42 UK Cathedral naves. See page 35. At the other end of the spectrum is a really exciting gig at the Maltings at the end of half term. It’s free to attend as it is part of a project from Springboard Live who are funding these sorts of events around the country. It will probably appeal more to the 18-30 crowd, by which I mean it sounds as if it’s going to be loud and lively! see page 27 for more information on the bands. Finally, I am actually hoping for just enough snow so I can get my sledge out for a trundle down Cherry Hill like the happy pair on the front cover. If it happens, see you there.
keep warm!

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY The Christmas break seemed unnaturally long to me, but I suppose it was because of the way the main events occurred over the weekends and we had all those “extra” bank holidays. It’s taken 4 weeks to get the rubbish collection back to the day that I expect it. There has been a relative lull in events at the Mayor’s parlour and that’s probably a good thing. I caught the Royal cold and was distinctly under par for a few days. I had no sympathy from The Mayoress because I made things worse by insisting on playing a lengthy game of real tennis on New Year’s day. Never a good thing to do and my game was rubbish anyway. Fortunately I was well enough to attend the Mayor’s gala performance of Aladdin at The Maltings. Each year their pantomime seems to get bigger and better, and the run of performances has increased over the years. KD Theatre Productions based in Soham are an extraordinary impressive outfit given that the eponymous Katherine Hickmott and Daniel Bell are still in their early 20s. They have been producing shows since the age of 13 years. This year they had two pantomimes running at the same time whilst planning an Easter event, Treasure Island, again to be held at the Maltings. At the same time they run their theatre academy, as though they did not already have enough to do. If you haven’t ever seen one of their shows, I can only urge you to remedy the deficit. At the same time you might care to fit in a visit to the Chagall exhibition at the Babylon gallery, or the splendid display of old Ely shop front photos at the Museum. It’s really great news to hear that the latter have succeeded in securing a lottery grant to develop the building to meet the demands of modern tourism, whilst safeguarding their collection and opening up so many educational opportunities for all to enjoy modern methods of presentation preservation of our local fenland history.

On the Council front we are now back in the routine of council meetings, and I’m glad to report that we have agreed the budget for next year. This is always a difficult exercise because like every other public body we have to try and do more for less. You will be aware of the problems we are having with the effects of the reduced numbers of lights in our residential areas, and with the lighting on Back Hill. We are making concerted representations to the County Council using our fellow councillors from ECDC and the County Council. We are continuing to work towards preventing the closure of the Barton Road toilets, and continue to progress the project to install a lift in the Session’s House. So, there are plenty of things for us to do, but plenty to look forward to as well. The cinema will be opening soon, and I’m really looking forward to that. Furthermore, The Mayoress, along with Artichoke, Queen’s shoes and the Golf Club are organising a fashion show at the Club in support of my charities on Friday 17th March. I shall be putting in an appearance, but not, I regret, modelling any of the items. I’ll also be looking to taking to the dance floor in April, because I shall be holding the Mayor’s Annual Ball at The Maltings on Saturday the 22nd of April. Cllr. Ian Lindsay

Why is there a stigma attached to Mental Health? Most people in their lives at some point will suffer with feeling down, low or depressed. However you would like to refer to it, the severity will have an appropriate label. Mental illness is a reaction to either a medical condition, imbalanced serotonin levels, life experiences or trauma that can cause the feeling of loss, grief, sadness or helplessness. Treatment can be administered in the form of prescription drugs or by self referral to talking therapies relieving and changing the perspective on the intense feelings that can be difficult and sometimes impossible to deal with. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Counselling, Hypnotherapy, Psychotherapy or other complimentary and alternative therapies like Reiki, Reflexology, Massage and Acupuncture are just a few but all have the potential to powerfully heal and empower the individual if they are ready. Working with a therapist will help you take back control of what is happening to you, enabling you to change old patterns and themes and initiate empowerment and self-awareness to heal yourself from the pain. It is a fact that society feels uncomfortable talking about mental health issues. If somebody walks into a room with a broken leg, you may be willing to ask, “how did it happen?” “is it painful?” “What can I do to help?” However, if a colleague walks into the office after suffering a bereavement or mental breakdown and is clearly upset, would you ask the same questions? Would you be able to reach out and give that person what they need? Would you have the tools to talk to them compassionately and give them a hug if they needed one?
If somebody is suffering and they don’t receive what they need, they may not have the awareness that they are in crisis or what their needs are. There will be potential to ‘bottle up’ the feelings which will intensify or be pushed down out of reach temporarily. They will be afraid to show their feelings for fear of being ignored, rejected or being told to pull themselves together, therefore, adding to their pain.
The feelings will be pushed down and remain unresolved. Remember how good it feels to have a good cry, remember that sad film when you sat on your own and sobbed. You just took the lid off the pressure cooker! Breaking the stigma of mental health and working with a compassionate heart will give so much relief to somebody suffering from the symptoms of mental illness. Take some time to talk to them, give them some of your time, give them a hug, tell them they are valued and loved, simply ask them what they need. You never know what life is going to throw at you and someday you may be in the same position. Unresolved feelings can manifest themselves in the body in many ways, we all know the negative effects that stress can cause; high blood pressure, palpitations, short
temperedness, fatigue or anxiety. We are highly aware of the dangers to long term health these symptoms can impact on the body; If we treat the effects of stress with relaxation, talk it through with somebody, stand in your power and say no to the demands of life, then you will be on your way to making a positive change therefore, decreasing stress levels, consequently lowering blood pressure and the symptoms would gradually decrease as you treat the root. When you are aware that you have choice about how to deal with dis-ease and mental illness, it will empower you to heal your personal limitations and pain. Once you experience, not feeling stressed, or not being in pain, you then have a comparison and you may enjoy the benefits and choose not to experience it ever again. The same can be said of the many physical effects of feelings. Drugs play an important part in todays medicine and can save many lives and improve many debilitating conditions, maybe what we just need is a slightly different perspective and the awareness that we can take control and choose a positive outcome by exploring alternative and complimentary Holistic therapies and working on ourselves because, actually, we are worth it. Let your heart open, your body sing and your mind thrive. Positive energy will be projected and everyone will benefit from your newly discovered self-awareness. Useful reading material: Your body speaks your mind – Deb Shapiro.

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership
Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long
standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,
Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Use us, we’re here to help!
We are delighted to be helping so many groups publicise their events and find new members. With the magazine going to virtually every home in Ely and being distributed to drop-off points around selected villages - as well as being available to pickup in shops and restaurants - its a great way to reach a very large number of readers. 10,000 copies are currently being printed and we suspect our readership is much much larger than that. Even our online version is growing in readership and is particularly popular with people from outside of Ely who want to keep in touch with what is going on. editor@elyimagazine.com DEADLINE ALWAYS 10th of preceding month

SPRINGBOARD LIVE
17th February 2017, Ely Maltings // 7pm //FREE Are you always looking for big music events in Ely? Well there is something you won’t want to miss happening here in Ely on 17th February. The Springboard Live 2017 tour is coming to the Maltings, bringing young talented, acts from around the UK! – At this event you get handpicked, up and coming Hip-hop, Electronic, R&B, Neo-soul all the way from Bristol, Manchester, Norwich and London in the form of ….Edges from London, Maya Law & Allergy Kid from Norwich, Bristol’s 4th Project and Manchester’s Abnormal Sleepz. What’s more it’s FREE admission thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, Rob George Foundation and Camden Roundhouse.
Maya Law and Allergy Kid: Maya, whose work with up-and-coming electro-hop producer Gabriel Gifford, aka Allergy Kid, is a brilliant collaboration. After the success of their first track together, Safe & Sound the duo’s plans to release an EP swelled into a full album released last October. Law’s lyrics are raw and startlingly honest. At just 17 she already possesses a heaviness and almost world weariness in her vocal that conveys the emotion and tumultuousness of her life. Beneath it all are Allergy Kid’s softly compulsive beats and deft production. The pair have a very natural musical connection, his light electronics and rhythms wonderfully textured with her rich, warm voice. It’s no surprise they were selected for this tour. 4th project 4th Project are a Bristol based Electro pop band whose music integrates soulful, ethereal vocals with keyboard, electric guitar and live electronics. The band, formed of vocalist Kathleen Fitzpatrick Milton, pianist Jack Drewry and guitarist Rowan Evans, shape their sound around their variety of musical influences including Soul, Pop, Jazz, Funk, Electronic Dance music and 90s R’n’B. Edges Serving up reckless electronics with tempered R&B, Edges are one of the resident artists at Camden’s Roundhouse, headlining in London at the beginning of this tour. Edges are a band that uplift people like them with innovative music and banging beats that people can see themselves in side of. Combining global heritage, social vigilance and queer culture with a new perspective on what it means to be British today. Abnormal Sleepz Abnormal Sleepz’ is an Artist & Producer/DJ hailing from the city of Manchester. From very early, Sleepz had an obsession with a wide range of music genres. At the age of 16, the years of spitting bars on the playground, and recording practice sets at home, eventually escalated into a tutor/engineer trainee job at a local studio. Moving forward he became dependent as a DJ, playing in and out of Manchester. His popularity grew and 2013 saw him become a resident DJ in Ibiza during the summer parties. Fast forwarding to the present gig, Sleepz presents us with ‘The Meditape Two’.

James Billings Photography Beautiful fine-art prints featuring Ely, The Fens, Cambridge and many other locations in the UK and worldwide.
http://prints.jamesbillings.photography All images available in a variety of styles, including framed, canvas, wood, metal and acrylic, or as a plain poster print for your own frame. Images can also be supplied on phone cases, tote bags, and other products.
About James I was a keen photographer throughout my younger years, always dragging an old film camera on family holidays. The pictures were probably terrible but I still enjoyed shooting. For a few years life and other hobbies took over, but then several years ago my wife bought me my first digital SLR camera, and since then I’ve been spending most of my free time shooting. My favourite subjects are probably the dramatic landscapes of Scandinavia or the Alps, but I also enjoy shooting in cities, and occasionally the more technical side of things with astrophotography through a telescope. When I’m not travelling, my free time is often spent wandering around Ely, capturing our beautiful cathedral and the riverside in the ever-changing light. As well as landscapes, I enjoy other styles of photography, and have shot weddings, corporate events, commercial and residential interiors and portraits. I’m available to shoot any of these, so please get in touch with me to discuss your ideas and requirements, and to see samples of my work. You can find me at http://jamesbillings.photography and you can email me – james@jamesbillings.photography 30 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION
SIMON JENKINS
10th February - 5th April 2017 The Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral Over 40 photographs of the cathedrals of the Church of England by Magnum Photographer Peter Marlow (1952 - 2016) are to be exhibited in The Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral. This is only the second time this work has been displayed in one of the spaces featured in the series and the first time the project has been exhibited within the region. Each shot was devoid of artificial light creating a representation of each cathedral removed from the modern age. This particular viewpoint and lighting adds depth to the visual experience of the building and the discipline of this strict approach allowed the power of the spaces to unfold in the dark. http://www.elycathedral.org/events
BOOK SIGNING EVENT 9th February 2017 St. Peter’s Church, Broad Street, Ely England’s Cathedrals are the nation’s glory, each one an individual masterpiece reflecting our history, our culture and our imagination. For over a thousand years they have towered over our towns, cities and countryside, more a part of the fabric of our daily lives than the grandest castle or palace. In Simon Jenkins, author of England’s Thousand Best Churches and former chairman of the National Trust, our cathedrals have their ideal chronicler. Join Toppings Booksellers to celebrate their story, told in this stunningly illustrated and endlessly entertaining book. https://www.toppingbooks.co.uk/ events/ely/simon-jenkins/

ELY 501 STORIES FROM THE HEART Ely 501, the creative writing challenge for local children, is now in its third year. As the organisers head out to schools to tell them all about it entry forms are already being collected. That means that youngsters are already beginning to come up with plots to scare and delight the judges, and all that in less than 501 words. Heading the judging panel is children’s writer Julian Sedgwick, author of the Mysterium trilogy. What is he hoping to find from this year’s contestants? ‘I’m looking for sentences that make me think “I wish I’d written that!” Stories that tell me what it’s like to be somebody else… or somewhere else…’ Last year’s competition received a staggering entry of more than 150 different stories from across the region but size isn’t everything, as Annabel Reddick from Burrows Bookshop explains. Together with David Learner from Mr Simms Ely she’s co-organising the competition. ‘One of our winners last year completed an amazing tale using just 164 words!’ she says. ‘It was an amazing achievement particularly as the young writer was only 6 years old!’ Where do the best stories come from? Julian again: ‘The best stories start from your own experience and from the heart: something you really want to write about, something weird you saw, something that made you laugh, something that excited you. Then let your imagination work on that, and change it! Always write about what moves or excites you, even if you think nobody else is interested!’ The closing date for entries is Friday 14th April and the awards ceremony will take place on Saturday 1st July at St Mary’s church Ely. The best stories will find their authors in print, in a specially commissioned book which will be available for anyone to buy. Entry forms can be obtained from either Burrows Bookshop or Mr Simms Ely. More: David Learner – 07749 760445 mrsimmsely@gmail.com www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 41

EMMAUS UK FOUNDER AWARDED THE LEGION D’HONNEUR The man who brought Emmaus to the UK has been awarded France’s highest distinction, the Legion d’Honneur. Selwyn Image was presented with the Chevalier de l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur at a ceremony at the French Ambassador’s London Residence on Thursday 12th January 2017. The award recognises his commitment as the founder of Emmaus UK, his efforts to extend Emmaus across the UK and his deep rooted ties with France. Presenting the award to Selwyn, the French Ambassador, Her Excellency Sylvie Bermann, said: “Emmaus UK is the second-largest Emmaus organization, so it is clear that through your initiative, energy and effort you have embedded Abbé Pierre’s legacy on this side of the Channel. Your work is part of what unites rather than divides France and the UK, promoting principles France holds dear to the wider community of nations. Selwyn said: “It is an absolute honour to receive the Legion d’honneur. When I first looked to open an Emmaus community in Cambridge, I had no idea that it would lead to 28 communities across the UK. But I remain convinced that Emmaus offers something that is very much needed in this country... homelessness is on the rise, and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people living on the streets. This shows that there is still so much work to be done to tackle homelessness in this country.” It was an encounter while volunteering in a soup kitchen that led Selwyn Image to set up the first Emmaus community in the UK. He got into a conversation with a homeless man about what might help him to overcome homelessness, but the man shot down every idea Selwyn offered to help. Increasingly frustrated, Selwyn asked: “Well, what do you want?” The man responded: “I would have thought that would have been obvious to an intelligent man like you. I want somewhere where I can work, where I feel I belong, and where I can recover my selfrespect.” Then, in | awww.elyimagazine.com sentence that would 48 | Elyi Magazine
change Selwyn’s life forever, the man said: “And what are you going to do about it?” Selwyn remembered the work experience he had done at Emmaus 30 years previously, and it seemed to provide just what this man was asking for. Not knowing if Emmaus even still existed, Selwyn contacted the French founder, Abbé Pierre, told him he would like to open an Emmaus community in Cambridge, and Emmaus in the UK was born. The first Emmaus community opened in Cambridge in 1991. Since then it has grown from one community to 28, spread across the UK. These communities provide a home and meaningful work for more than 760 formerly homeless people. More info at http://www.emmaus.org.uk/ cambridge

WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER (International and Interdenominational) FRIDAY 3 MARCH 2017, 1.45pm at Ely City Church (formerly Olive Tree), Silver Street, Ely AM I BEING UNFAIR TO YOU? Women’s World Day of Prayer is an international, ecumenical, prayer movement that invites women, from a different part of the world each year, to prepare a worship service through which their hopes and fears for their country may be brought before the whole world in prayer. On Friday 3rd March over 5,000 services will be held in the British Isles on the theme of ‘Am I Being Unfair to You?’ The Christian women of the Philippines wrote the service and it has been translated into 1,000 different languages and dialects, to be used, throughout the whole world, on Friday 3rd March, starting at sunrise over the island of Samoa and continuing until sunset off the coast of American Samoa.
impasto.co.uk
In 2013, Typhoon Haiyan – named locally as ‘Yolanda’ – struck the Philippine islands in the western Pacific Ocean. This is mentioned in the service but you will also hear the stories of a girl, a mother and an older woman, recounting their situations and their hopes and fears. The service focusses on the Bible story of the workers in the vineyard: Matthew 20 v.1-16. There is a reflection on the artwork designed by Rowena ‘Apol’ Laxamana-Sta.Rosa. It is very thought provoking and illustrates contrasting scenes. Why not come along and find out more about the theme and the Philippines? Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at Ely City Church (formerly Olive Tree), Silver Street, Ely, starting at 1.45pm. This is not a day of prayer just for women – everyone is welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. Refreshments will be served after the service.
