Dear Readers You'll notice the magazine has got bigger! Such is the optimism of current times I feel. There is a definite trend at the moment amongst contributors to get out there and get on with stuff! Activities and projects that have had to be put on hold during the pandemic are now back in action. We feature Angela Haylock who is supporting local groups like Riding and Skating Ely, Ely Splashpad and Ely Runners in their various bids to create exciting facilities for local people. Outdoor activities for the young (and not so young) are so important especially in this tech age where so much of our work, academic and leisure life involves screens. If you want to see a skatepark, a splash pad or a running track in Ely, get in touch with Angela (page 38) to find out how you can support. It's 700 years since the collapse of the Cathedral tower in 1322. The silver lining in the disaster, of course, was the construction of the breathtaking octagon tower for which Ely is so famous. Ouse life have a wonderful exhibition of artwork in the Cathedral on this theme April to May. It will be well worth a visit and free with your Cathedral Pass. Looking towards the summer we also feature the Madhatters Campsite Festival. Head over to their FB page for a chance to win free weekend tickets! Our website is still in development and we continue to ask you to send your Groups and Meets info here: https://bit.ly/3dszlbv Businesses can also sign up for the directory online here: https://bit.ly/31PGoZb Have a very Happy Easter!

OASIS ELY CANCER HUB Oasis has opened its doors to provide a positive platform for anyone experiencing cancer in Ely and its surroundings.

ELY WILDSPACE Surviving winter: shall I stay, or shall I go? For the past decade there has been an overwintering group of 10+ Chiffchaffs around the sewage works near Pocket Park, where they feast on flies. The Chiffchaff, a warbler, is one of several species of migratory bird for which a significant population remains in Britain over the winter, as winters here become milder due to climate change. This bird normally spends winter in northwest Africa. Sewage works and dung heaps provide important food sources for insectivorous birds during the winter. There are clear advantages to avoiding the hazards and stresses of migration if you can. With a good supply of food during the winter, an overwintering Chiffchaff is likely to be in good condition for breeding, and males are already on-site and able to establish territories before their migrating fellows arrive in April. This winter a Chiffchaff was heard singing (chiff-chaff … chiff-chaff) at Ely sewage works on 10th January, already staking its claim to territory! Significant overwintering populations of birds that normally migrate are becoming more frequent in Britain. This is an example of how birds can be “canaries in the mine” – early indicators of significant long-term shifts in climate. Very occasionally a “celebrity” turns up at Ely sewage works. On 20th November 2016 a Siberian Chiffchaff, a rare species for Britain, was seen. This sparkling individual (photo), who “should” have been spending winter in the lower Himalayas, joined the regular band of wintering Chiffchaffs, staying for a week before moving on. Get involved by visiting elywildspace.org.uk or email lpcre@elywildspace.org.uk. Find us on Facebook and Twitter. 12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The idea of the Oasis Ely Cancer Hub initially came to me during my treatment. In 2018, cancer shocked and took over my life and that of my family. I had little idea how this illness could affect patients, their families and friends. I could see during my oncology and radiotherapy clinics that this illness affects a huge number of people and of all ages. I learned that although there is a wonderful support to patients and families available in Cambridge, this did not feel very accessible living in Ely. Oasis aims to provide wellbeing support for people closer to where they live. It seeks to overcome the barriers that some face in travelling to Cambridge or Peterborough, and to signpost people to sources of information from professional cancer organisations at the point of diagnosis, during treatment and beyond. Oasis is joining forces with organisations such as Macmillan Cancer Support, the Cambridge Cancer Help Centre, and the Hive Leisure Centre in Ely to share knowledge and skills online and face to face. It would be great to hear what you would like to see in your Oasis. Do consider joining Oasis Ely Cancer Hub as a free member. To find out more: • • •

It was nice to get back into fundraising mode and make some well needed funds for our charity account. We had a stall at Littleport Christmas craft fair, one of our members had a stall on her drive selling Christmas cards and goodies and we also held one of our very successful “Win every time” soft toy Tombolas at Littleport Christmas fair extravaganza hosted by the MMC 363 motorcycle club at the Crown pub. Unfortunately because of Covid we had to cancel our popular Breakfast with Santa Picture is of Mark Robinson President of at the Almonry Ely, which MCC 363 motorcycle was a great shame as it would club accepting a have been another sellout pennant of Littleport and all the presents had been Lions club from bought and wrapped. But Lions President Ann we took the decision, with Ransley at Littleport advice from our health and Christmas fair safety dept at our head office, and did it with a heavy heart for the safety of all. We donated presents to the Salvation Army and received a lovely letter of thanks. Local pubs, the Crown in Littleport and the Hereward and the Kings Arms In Ely were great by selling tickets for Christmas hampers and helping boost our charity account. We have restarted our spectacles and hearing aid collection, they can be left at Wades, Specsavers and Boots in Ely, and Loach & Wades in Littleport and Soham. We usually meet on the 1st Sunday of the month at Adams Heritage Centre in Littleport. New members are always welcome. If you would like to come along and find out about our fundraising ideas please contact our secretary at lionscluboflittleport@gmail.com Or phone 01353 664906 to make arrangements. We start the meeting with a cuppa and biscuits. Help Local Lions, Help Local People

Microsoft’s Windows 11 is here, should you upgrade? After nearly 7 years of Windows 10, Microsoft announced and released its newest iteration last year, you got it – Windows 11. A successful and stable platform, Windows 10 continues to run on most of the PCs we see being used by businesses and domestic users today. The new Windows 11 operating system builds on the solid foundation of Windows 10, adding a modernised feel as well as some welcome performance improvements. Microsoft will continue supporting Windows 10 until 2025 meaning your Windows 10 device will still receive important security updates and fixes until then, so there’s no need to jump straight into Windows 11 if you don’t want to. The requirements set out by Microsoft on what devices can run the latest version are relatively high. You’ll need a fairly new computer of a decent specification to be able to upgrade to Windows 11 seamlessly. Some users will find that Windows 11 is not supported on their current hardware and as with all significant software updates, taking a backup of your data before carrying out the upgrade is very important. In the unlikely event that the upgrade fails, a copy of your important data can be a huge relief and make recovering the situation much easier. If you are buying a new PC, Windows 11 is now the recommended choice. If you are considering upgrading an existing PC, and would like advice on how best to proceed, get in touch with the team at FenStar IT and we’ll be happy to help - 01354 638701 info@fenstar.co.uk

CITY OF ELY COUNCIL Update

The City Council has properties for local people and are part of a LOCAL HOUSING NEEDS SCHEME

City of Ely Council Sessions House, Lynn Road, Ely, Cambs CB7 4EG Phone: 01353 661016 Fax: 01353 667057 The Entrants were put into age categories and a winner from each category was chosen independently by members of The Ely Photography Club. The council would like to say thank you to the club for taking time to judge these photos. We would like to thank all the participants and hope they had fun taking the photos.

The scheme originated in 1992 and consists of 54 houses, these are mainly 2-bedroom properties. The percentage purchased is around 76% with the remaining 24% staying in ownership of the Council. There is a rent of currently £41.57 per month to pay on the remaining share. Properties are offered for sale from time to time and are currently around £175k for a 76% share. ANNUAL PARISH MEETING Tuesday 29th March 2022 at 7.00pm At The Maltings, Ship Lane, Ely, CB7 4BB

MEETING INCLUDES: Council Reports Reports from The Ely Ribe Association City of Ely Allotments & Gardens Association Local voluntary and charitable organisations who have received grants from the Council THIS PUBLIC MEETING IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS OF ELY CITY COUNCILLORS EVERYONE WELCOME

It was pleasure to be invited to attend the Beer Festival the first for 2 years - even though I know nothing about beer and don’t drink it! I attended the Queen’s Accession to the Throne service in the Cathedral and of course everyone is looking forward to the Platinum Celebrations with a superb programme of events.

MAYOR OF ELY SUE AUSTEN

It has been exciting to be invited to more events and to be able to promote our wonderful City and Parish. I enjoy meeting people and I hope they enjoy meeting me!

We are aware that people are upset about not having the extravaganza at the Christmas Lights switch on. I reassure you that plans are already being discussed for a safer and less costly event. Lights and tree will happen. We thank the volunteers who organised this in the past but life is so different now and the City of Ely Council needs to move on.Covid is now part of our lives - be sensible - keep safe and get jabbed. that you too can make a difference. Volunteers are the essential ingredient to the survivability of EAAA and, therefore, to its ongoing lifesaving work. Activities include –helping at events, taking part in bucket collections, speaking to groups, box collections, in the office and copywriting, research and networking. We need your skills, time, ideas, contacts and energy ! Whether its regular or intermittent, your gift of time and help is needed. So, do it now – please. In 2007 our ‘Hero’ Doctor, Dr. Pam Chrispin became EAAA’s first female flying doctor when all air ambulance doctors were volunteers. All good things must come to an end though and after after 14 years of dedicated service, including as EAAAs Deputy Medical Director, Pam is retiring, She had an incredible 40 year medical career and was recently reunited with mother Emma and her daughter, Willow, whom she once saved. Emma said “She’s our absolute hero – if it wasn’t for her we wouldn’t be here today or have a precious family”. Our thoughts and good wishes go with you Pam for a long and happy retirement. Job well done ! You can read more about this remarkable lady on the EAAA website by visiting www.eaaa.org.uk

A brief ‘heads-up’ on forthcoming TREK 24 events (up to 24 miles or kilometres depending on route) includes – 7/5 Norfolk Broads to Norwich, 11/6 Suffolk coast and countryside, 13/7 Chilterns Challenge and 11/9 Norfolk Coast Path. Why not get a group together and contact www.trek-24. co.uk for these great fundraising days out. Every time that you see or are aware of an East Anglian Air Ambulance helicopter overflying your ‘neck of the woods’ remember – people like you helped it take off to undertake that potentially lifesaving mission! Those of you who read my regular missives will be all too aware that the overall objective is to engender ongoing support for EAAA. Angela Haylock, working to get Ely families active!

The What’s Your Game Project is a 4 year funded project which aims to get children and their families more active in Ely and Littleport. As this project is due to end in August, I thought it would be useful to highlight what I have been working on: Skatepark & BMX Track in Ely I’ve been involved since 2020. We carried out an on line petition and given a presentation to the Council. More recently the group put in a Planning Pre App at the Country Park. Sadly, the Country Park is not suitable. The group are now focusing on looking at alternatives. Follow on Facebook @elyskatepark I partnered with Let’s Go Skate to deliver skateboarding lessons in 2020 and 2021 both sessions were oversubscribed.

I have worked with parents reviewing the play areas in Ely and compiling a report on the lack of accessibility. This report has been sent to both the City and District Councils. I operate the Ely, Cambs Look for a Book and the Littleport, Cambs Look for a Book schemes. Splash Pad in Ely I’ve been working with this group since its formation in 2019. We’ve given presentations to both the City and District Councils and gathered 1,299 signatures with an on-line petition. Unfortunately, the Paradise Centre decided not to offer the use of this site for a Splash Pad so the group are looking at alternatives. Follow on Facebook @splashpadforely I assisted the Junior Park Run in Ely with some funding. The Park Run has been in operation since 9 January. Follow on Facebook @ elycountryjuniors - read more next page!

38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Splashpad Campaign I have recently started working with the Ely Running Club who are trying to get an Athletics track built in Ely. I am assisting Jane Frost (who created the Littleport Labyrinth during lockdown). We are hoping to get residents involved in creating a community area on the land. Follow on Facebook - Woodfen Green Labyrinth.

I’ve been in talks with Active Play Education and Horsely Hale about creating a Forrest School Activity. Currently on hold but the local schools and landowners are keen.

A walking bus

ELY JUNIOR PARK RUN GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH!

I have tried on numerous occasions to start a Walking Bus. This is where a group of parents take it in turns to escort their children and others to school and back. This reduces the number of cars on the road and gives the children some fresh air and exercise to start the day.

I have also tried to start a Playing out event. This is where the street is closed and the children and their families can safely play in the road for an hour or two. Maybe these are something that people feel could happen, now that we are getting back to normal. If anyone has any ideas that they would like me to help with please get in contact: angela@vcaec.org.uk You can follow me on Facebook or Twitter using @ecactivefamily

The Ely Country Junior Park Run is held every Sunday at 9am at Ely Pocket Park (CB74PU). Its free to register which you do online before turning up. This gets you your barcode so you can have your time measured and start earning your distance rewards. It's entirely organised by volunteers and if you are interested in signing up to help or marshall please email elycountryjuniors@parkrun.com It is a really friendly event with participants invited to join together for an after run cuppa at one of the local Ely cafes. A fantastic 111 children along with their parents and supporters attended the meet on 13th February. Go to www.parkrun. org.uk/elycountry-juniors/ or www.facebook.com/elycountryjuniors for up to date info on the next meet. www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 39

I believe that the most important things in life are not possessions, but the moments we share with the ones we love. It is well known that weddings can be very costly. But how would we feel about the idea that our special day might be contributing to “costing the Earth”? As we become more aware of the environmental price we are paying for our high consumption way of life, more and more couples are trying to find sustainable ways to celebrate their love for each other as well as their love for life on earth. Weddings don’t have to be big, showy extravaganzas. There’s something very special about the event that presents a different angle on celebration. The desire to honour those people and things that are dear to us, might see us bringing out Granny’s mix and match crockery, our colleague’s collection of table linen, and our Dad’s garden flowers, along with borrowings from friends and other family members.

Jacqueline is a local celebrant who trained with both OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation and the UK Society of Celebrants, and it is her honour and delight to work with you to create a sustainable ceremony that is most meaningful to you. After all, it is your celebration - whether it's a wedding, a baby naming, an engagement or any important transition, including the end of a life well lived. These are personal as well as very special and significant rites of passage. People who are committed to an established faith path, have established and well- loved ceremonies for many of these significant moments. However, many of us nowadays might describe ourselves, as secular or spiritual. We may not fit comfortably into any one religious box, but still feel the need to mark those special moments with ceremony. Feel free to visit Jacqueline’s website: jacquelineogden.co.uk or email her at jacquelineogden@hotmail.com to start a no-obligation conversation about your plans.

The Bride and Groom in the photo above asked everyone they knew for fabric scraps with a story behind them and pieced them together into these wedding outfits that literally “told the story of their lives”. 44 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

After the fall...

The Ouse Life group are delighted to present their third exhibition at Ely Cathedral. On this occasion we address notions around the collapse of the central tower in 1322 which led to the creation of the extraordinary and unique Octagon. We explore the beauty of the building, the means of making it, the lives of the people who constructed, maintained, rebuilt and inhabited it over the next 700 years .

City of Ely Military Band

Eighteen artists have spent the challenging time of Covid imagining and creating over 100 works. Painting, Sculpture, Installations Textile Art, Ceramics and Collage are all represented in a dazzling array of styles and media.

Sunday 20th March

Over 100 artworks will be on display, executed in a variety of media and sizes by 18 artists. The show runs from Wednesday 27th April until Sunday 29th May 2022. Residents of Ely and surrounding villages may enter for free (with proof of address). Normal charges otherwise apply.

Tea ‘n’ Tunes Concert Ely College, CB6 2SH

2.30 – 5pm

Tickets £7.50 available from Burrows Newsagents, High Street, Ely or 01353 721782.

We plan to produce an Art Trail to further enhance the experience of younger art lovers. Following on from our highly successful 2016 exhibition, ‘ The Secret Life of Ely Cathedral’, we have taken time to regroup, assisted by the recent pandemic lockdowns and have produced an exciting body of work that we have entitled ‘After the Fall’, commemorating the 700th anniversary of the Cathedral’s original central tower which collapsed when foundation work for the Lady Chapel caused subsidence . Coincidentally this coincides with the 25th anniversary of OuseLife Artists. We hope to not collapse! For more info, visit our website at http://www.ouselife.co.uk/

Photo: James Billings Within a year of its collapse there was a plan for a new, better tower.

ELY CHORAL SOCIETY & CONDUCTOR, ANDREW PARNELL CELEBRATE THEIR 20 YEAR PARTNERSHIP!

BRAHMS

EIN DEUTSCHES REQUIEM

Andrew Parnell has directed Ely Choral Society since 2002 and in celebration of his first 20 years the choir is mounting a special concert in Ely Cathedral on 9th April.

PARNELL ALPHA AND OMEGA Ely Choral Society commission to celebrate Andrew's 20th season as Musical Director

The programme will feature Brahms’ A German Requiem, one of Andrew’s favourite choral works, and Alpha and Omega, a new work by Andrew which was commissioned by the Society during lockdown. The Brahms Requiem, unlike other Requiems which are frequently heard in concerts, does not follow the conventional movements of the Requiem Mass with its prayers for the deceased as they move into the next life. Brahms wanted to write a Requiem to comfort the living with a focus on faith in the Resurrection, which allows him a lot of scope for uplifting and positive settings of texts from the Bible as well as those which offer consolation and reflection. There are two performing versions of the German Requiem, one to be accompanied by a large symphony orchestra, which adds all the orchestral colours and power to the sound of the choir, and the other accompanied by a piano duet. This provides a better balance for a choir like Ely Choral Society and a more intimate atmosphere for performers and audience alike. When Andrew was invited to compose a work to celebrate his 20th anniversary, he chose texts from The Revelation of St John the Divine. He has set some 23 verses from the book, concentrating on those which celebrate and praise God as lifegiver and provider for mankind. The frequent return to ‘I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end’ adds cohesion and structure to the work.

The Impressionists were an innovative and radical group of artists whose work took Paris by storm in the 1870s. The group included, from the beginning, women artists. Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt and Marie Bracquemond all exhibited at the Impressionist exhibitions while Eva Gonzalès, Manet’s muse, was an innovative artist in her own right. Yet how much do we know about them? What and how did they paint? What obstacles and prejudices did they face? This study day will explore these questions and many more. Sarah Burles is an accredited lecturer with The Art Society. • Venue: The Countess Free Church, Chapel Street, Ely, CB6 1AD (parking for blue badge holders only) • Wednesday 16 March 2022, 10.00am for 10.15am -15.15pm • Course fee is £30. LIBRARIES TEAM RECEIVES CARER FRIENDLY TICK AWARD IN RECOGNITION OF THEIR WORK TO IDENTIFY AND SUPPORT CARERS. The Cambridgeshire County Council Libraries Team has been awarded our Carer Friendly Tick Award (Communities), in recognition of their work to identify and support carers. The Council has 33 libraries across the county, including three mobile libraries, which are staffed by a team of 188 people. The libraries team was awarded the Carer Friendly Tick Award for reasons including having a dedicated carers champion, more than 100 library staff attending Caring Together’s carers awareness sessions and their promotion of national and local carers campaigns in their e-newsletter to 30,000 Cambridgeshire residents. After attending the awareness sessions, a number of library staff identified themselves as carers. Andy McGowan, head of engagement at Caring Together, said, “Libraries play an important role at the heart of communities. Many users may well be carers, but unaware of the support available to them if they are looking after a family member or friend. The work the libraries are now already doing is really valued in helping make more people aware of what it means to be a carer. We are already talking to Cambridgeshire Libraries about ways we work to ensure more people are identified as carers and supported in their roles. Fenprobe Talking News Fenprobe is a free service for blind or visually impaired residents in East Cambridgeshire. It’s moved on considerably since it was launched in late 1978, when the weekly news was sent out on 30 minute cassette tapes. Now there’s a smart black player (free of charge) with bright yellow buttons, which runs on rechargeable batteries – and the news is delivered on a USB stick, which holds a lot more information. Fenprobe rents a studio in Ely, where over forty volunteers help read the news, on a five-weekly rota. There’s also a monthly magazine. Users of the service need to register, and must be referred by a doctor, optician or professional carer. If you know someone who has difficulty reading the local news, and who would benefit from this service, you can contact the secretary on 01353 861153. email: jsmith9306@aol.com
