Dear Readers As I write this, I have no way of predicting what sort of Christmas we might have had here in Ely! Some events have gone ahead and some have had to be cancelled. I hope, though, that you manage to have some fun over the winter season and have shared some good company and festive food during Christmas.! The diary is still looking a little empty compared to January and February 2020 but, hopefully, as we progress through 2022 we will see this grow as more local groups and venues feel confident to make firm plans for their events during the year. Most clubs and societies are back to in-person meetings now. Do please remember to update your info so that your listing is accurate in the magazine. There is now a handy online form which automatically updates the Elyi website and gets through to me here at the office for the print version. Please use that if you can. We will be launching a new interactive website later in the year so need to develop some automated ways of collecting your info. Here is the Community Groups Form: https://bit.ly/3dszlbv Businesses can also sign up for the directory online here: https://bit.ly/31PGoZb Our next issue is our 60th (Our diamond issue!) and will cover the months of March and April so please do think ahead and make sure you have booked your space well before copy day on 14th February. From my Elyi desk I wish you a healthy and happy 2022!

Bridget .

ELY WILDSPACE

As winter sets in…. As winter sets in, the meadows, woods and wetlands of the Ely Wildspace offer new seasonal treats for those of us looking for nature on our doorstep. Flotillas of wintering tufted ducks swell the numbers of wildfowl on Roswell Pits. With the trees leafless again, colourful woodpeckers and bullfinches become easier to spot in the surrounding woodland. The long-tailed tits, which roost bundled together on cold winter nights, form back into their large family groups; spot a party crossing a gap over a path and you may count a dozen or more flitting after one another. As winter progresses, remaining clusters of hawthorn berries attract the attentions of blackbirds – many of them winter visitors from elsewhere in Europe – and perhaps some lingering redwings and fieldfares. And along the river kingfishers, hard-pressed to catch enough food in the short, cold days, are more apparent than in the summer months; Cuckoo Bridge and the railway bridge near Lavender Green are especially good places to sit a while and wait for a blue dart zipping over the water. Ely Wildspace is running a beginner-friendly bird race, from 07.30 am-10.00 am on Sunday 9th January 2022. Participants will form teams and try to see as many birds as possible across the Wildspace. Meet by the Environment Agency at the top of Kiln Lane. Everybody welcome. 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

A major part of my work with and for EAAA is the siting of red collection boxes, their collection when full and their replacement. In response to messages from the office, and calls from publicans and retailers, I cover an increasingly wide area to do this and never cease to be impressed by the generosity I find stuffed into these boxes. Once again, and no apologies, a HUGE New Year thank you one and all for supporting such a worthwhile cause. Keep filling the boxes – please ! During the first three months plus of providing 24/7 cover by air and road – 30/6 to 18/10 (2021) – crews were tasked 307 times between 7pm and 7am, averaging nearly three missions a night. During this period, 87 of the taskings were by helicopter and 220 by rapid response vehicle – justification, were any to be needed, for ‘closing the nightime gap’. These extra missions, across all four counties and beyond, have been to a range of emergencies including accidental injuries, cardiac arrests, road traffic collisions, medical emergencies and assaults. After many years in the planning, it is gratifying to know that EAAA is providing the same level of service, no matter what time of day or night, over the whole area. Soon, our helicopters will be looking a bit different! Babcock, our aviation partner, will be upgrading both aircraft by fitting new D3 five blade rotor heads which will: •

Significantly reduce vibration in the cabin, ensuring a much smoother flight and better experience for both crews and patients. Allow the clinicians to perform more vital procedures in flight, thereby ensuring patients receive advanced treatment even quicker. Enable the aircraft to carry more fuel and equipment, helping crews to stay on station longer before needing to refuel or restock.

T V - coming soon on ‘More 4’, please keep an eye open for a new series of Emergency Helicopter Medics – another opportunity to gain a very real insight into what our crews face every day. If you have the time to support EAAA, no matter in what capacity, please do get in touch. Michael White 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

BIPC CAMBRIDGESHIRE AND PETERBOROUGH LAUNCHES JUMPSTART, OFFERING GRANTS, RESOURCES AND SUPPORT TO LOCAL NEW BUSINESSES

In celebration of its recent expansion across the region, the Business & IP Centre (BIPC) Cambridgeshire & Peterborough has announced the launch of a brand new support programme to businesses in the area. BIPC Jumpstart is a unique initiative offering grants, resources and support designed to help start-up businesses get set and grow. In the knowledge that funding is often crucial to early onset businesses, £30k of grants will be awarded at the beginning of 2022 as a key benefit of the BIPC Jumpstart programme. The programme is open to start-up businesses that registered in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough on or after 14 January 2021, or those that will be registered and trading in Cambridgeshire or Peterborough within two months of receiving the BIPC Jumpstart grant in February 2022. To be eligible, business owners need to fully engage in at least three BIPC business support tools, before submitting a business plan and BIPC Jumpstart application form. Applicants will be asked to highlight how a grant allocation (of up to maximum of £5,000) would make a difference to their business. Applications are open until Friday 14th January 2022.

12 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The grants on offer are set to be popular but are just one part of the BIPC Jumpstart programme. Participants will also have access to further prizes and support packages to help them on their new business journey throughout 2022; with more details, including the judging panel and delivery partners, set to be announced soon. Once all grant applications have been received, judges will invite a shortlist of applicants to present at a series of pitching events at Cambridge Central Library in February 2022, before the overall 2022 BIPC Jumpstart grant recipients are announced. More information about the new BIPC Jumpstart programme and downloadable entry forms are available to view at www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/ BIPCjumpstart, with regular social media activity also due to be published online, linked by the hashtag #BIPCjumpstart. The Business & IP Centre Cambridgeshire & Peterborough provides free and low-cost business support and advice to start up business owners, entrepreneurs, and inventors. From five BIPC libraries across the area – Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon, Peterborough and Wisbech – its in-house experts and incredible resources support pre-start and start-up businesses every day. The Centre is part of the British Library’s highly successful network of library-based BIPCs across England, and is delivered through Cambridgeshire County Council & Peterborough City Council.

A Personal Story

“Mark’s experience taught me that you can have a very positive death experience.” Caline’s husband Mark was cared for at the end of his life by Arthur Rank Hospice, in late summer 2020. Now, inspired by the care she and her husband received, she is training to become a Death Doula. This means she will work to ensure that people who are nearing the end of their lives are getting the best support they can have, and are living as pain-free as possible, depending on their situation. “I was fortunate that I got to be with Mark when he died, at the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice. We were all there with him. The staff there were very supportive – beyond amazing! I can never thank the staff enough for being so brilliant. He was very well looked after. At Arthur Rank Hospice, you’re kept in the loop with what’s happening, and there’s always someone to discuss the situation with.” UNDERSTANDING THAT THE HOSPICE CAN SUPPORT FROM FIRST DIAGNOSIS When Caline and Mark were first referred to Arthur Rank Hospice in December 2017, it was immediately after his diagnosis with Stage 4 prostate cancer, 2 years and 9 months prior to his death. With the prospect of life-prolonging treatments lining the road ahead of them, it was difficult for the couple to understand why a hospice would be reaching out to support them this early on. They didn’t know then about the breadth of the Hospice’s services of support and care now available to them. Two years later, after a bad spell, Mark was back on the radar of the Hospice’s community team. As a result, in late 2019 the couple received joint counselling from the Patient and Family Support team, as well as reflexology sessions with the Complementary Therapy team. Louise, a nurse in the Hospice’s Community Team, visited Mark at home to assist with pain management. 20 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

The Charity’s services helped the couple not just to cope, but to live well, with Mark’s progressive illness. In spring 2020, the global pandemic was impacting every area of life. Having worked from home for several weeks, Mark eventually stopped work in April, and in May the family received the distressing news that the cancer had spread to his brain, a rare occurrence for this type. In the following weeks, there were two periods of hospitalisation. By this time, his mobility and energy had both significantly decreased. Staying on top of a complicated regime of medication as well as caring for his physical needs, Caline persevered as Mark’s fulltime carer until she was “on the verge of collapse”. Caring fulltime for a loved one can be exhausting; emotionally, mentally and physically. ACCEPTING SUPPORT By June 2020, Mark was still determined to fight his cancer, and was struggling to accept their new reality. In an effort to help him realise the gravity of recent developments, Caline called for the assistance of Mark’s oncologist, who reiterated what the Arthur Rank Hospice’s expert medical team had said – that, sadly, there were only weeks to live at this point. Caline explains that “there was a real mental and emotional struggle to make peace with the change in direction from receiving life-prolonging treatment, to the necessary palliative care appropriate for this new stage”. When the clinical team called to offer Mark a bed on the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice, he needed some persuading, explains Caline: “I’m so glad he decided to go in. I had to persuade him to take the bed when it was offered. The fact he relented, and went into the Inpatient ward, was such a relief for me. He was in the right place,

and we could get his medications under control. I could concentrate on being with him, rather than running around after him. I would have loved for him to have been at home, but COVID made that so difficult with all the limitations on people coming into our house to help me. I wanted the help, and the team on the Hospice’s Inpatient Unit made it easy for me to be with Mark 24 hours a day. It was the best solution for us.” VALUABLE TIME TOGETHER Mark was admitted to the ward on 21 August 2020, in the thick of a global pandemic and the day before the couple’s wedding anniversary. The Inpatient Unit team pulled out all the stops to ensure that Mark and Caline could enjoy what was likely to be their final wedding anniversary together. Closing off the family room, they set the table for a special dinner ordered in from Mark’s favourite Japanese restaurant. The room was decorated with fairy lights and music played in the background as they enjoyed their food, Caline with a cocktail and Mark with a beer. "He didn’t have much energy, but I think he realised this would be our last anniversary together. It was difficult for him to shower but the staff helped him, and I brought some nice clothes in. I wheeled him to the family room and we had a lovely dinner together. I’ll never forget it.” The couple’s children, Luna and Skye have been on the journey with Caline the whole way, They all appreciated the extra family time they had together at home, due to school closures in response to the pandemic. At the same time, the children saw close-up the stages of their dad dying. “They’re very resilient, and they had to grow up a bit more quickly than their peers, because of that”, Caline reflects. While Caline advocates for families having the difficult conversations about dying before the time comes, she admits that nothing can fully prepare you for seeing someone you love die.

“Life is for living, but in order to appreciate life and get on with the act of living, you have to accept that death is part of it.” CALINE’S DECISION TO BECOME A DEATH DOULA The podcast, ‘You Me and The Big C’, as well as the book ‘With the end in mind’ by Kathryn Mannix, helped Caline understand what to expect, not only as a result of Mark’s death, but also of her father’s death, two years prior. She also attended a talk at Arthur Rank Hospice where she met a Death Doula. She returned home sure that she wanted to pursue this training for herself. Telling Mark, she says he thought it a bit morbid, to start with. “But it doesn’t have to be”, Caline explains. “it’s about offering holistic support to ensure people are getting that joined-up care, especially for people who might be alone otherwise. My kids are very accepting that this is what I want to do – they aren’t phased by it, we’ve had these discussions and they understand.” FUNDRAISING THROUGH FACEBOOK While Mark was being cared for on the Inpatient Unit, Caline set up a Facebook Fundraiser for her birthday, inviting donations to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity in light of the care they were receiving. Sooner than expected, at 3.55am the next day (1 September 2020), Mark died. The donation page was now being shared across their networks; because of the circumstances it became a fundraiser in memory of Mark. Striking a chord with their community, Caline was overwhelmed to see friends, and friends of friends, and friends of Mark’s who she’d not met, actively and generously donating to Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, exceeding her expectations. “I want to spread the word and educate others about the Hospice, which is about so much more than just the end of your life. It’s so important we support this vital resource in our community.” Amazingly, Caline’s first Facebook Fundraiser helped to bring in over £5,400 in vital funds for the Charity, helping ensure other patients will also receive the specialist wrap-around care and support they and their families need at all stages of their journey. “The staff’s empathy, care, support and compassion – I’ll never forget that.” www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 21

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER (A Women-led, Global, Ecumenical Movement) FRIDAY 4th MARCH 2022, 11am at Ely Methodist Church “I know the plans I have for you” The World Day of Prayer is an international, interchurch organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. 2022 is a special year for World Day of Prayer in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. This year, we have prepared the World Day of Prayer Service. It has been both challenging and rewarding to write about the three countries that make up our area: our landscape, people and culture all shaped by our history. We celebrate our diversity and the contribution made to our countries by the many groups and individuals who have made their home here. We use our Bible text “I know the plans I have for you” from Jeremiah to reflect on some of the issues facing us today: poverty, domestic abuse and disability, finding hope in difficult situations and encouragement in the help we can give to each other.

On Friday 4th March, services will be held nationwide and worldwide, when the Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 170 countries. It begins in Samoa, then moves on through New Zealand and Australia, across Asia, Africa and Europe, and finally the United States and South America, before finishing in American Samoa more than 36 hours later.

24 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at Ely Methodist Church, starting at 11am (note new morning start time). To celebrate our countries’ special involvement in the 2022 Day of Prayer, the service this year will be followed by a soup and roll lunch. All are welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children. For further info email: ElyWDP@hotmail.com or see the website: www.wwdp.org.uk

Breaks for carers in East Cambridgeshire Do you, or someone you know, look after a family member or friend in East Cambridgeshire? We know that carers do an amazing job and that looking after someone can be really rewarding but it can also be really hard at times, especially without a break. We have launched a new project which can provide free short breaks to carers through the support of volunteers. Short break volunteers can provide company for the person being looked after so that carers can take a break and do something they enjoy – such as going for a walk with a friend, going to the hairdressers, an exercise class or doing something else at home such as gardening or spending time with other family members. If you are in East Cambridgeshire and would like to find out more you can contact us on 01480 499090 or email eastcambsproject@caringtogether.org

Margins of Empire at Ely Museum In early 2022, with exciting local Roman objects on loan from The British Museum, explore the ‘Margins of Empire’ at Ely Museum with a special temporary exhibition opening in January. Britain was on the far edge of the Roman empire. It was so far that some Romans thought that Britain was a myth. Early written sources mentioning Britain do so as a distant and barbarian place! The people who lived here were both British and Roman, the majority living in the empire without being citizens. We are delighted to have some amazing, locally found, Roman objects on display in the exhibition too, including the amazing Witcham helmet, and the beautifully decorated Prickwillow skillet from the British Museum – a rare opportunity to see them back in the fens!

36 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Ely Museum is particularly delighted to be partnering with the British Museum again on this exhibition, following the successes of the ‘Aedwen’s Brooch: The Mystery of Sutton’s Silver’ exhibition in 2015 and the ‘Egyptian Cat in Ely’ exhibition in 2010 which also featured fantastic objects from their collection. Over the coming months, the museum will be hosting a variety of school visits, activities and family events, inspired by this brilliant new exhibition – keep an eye on our website & social media pages for more information. You can join us for our first event, ‘The Romans Are Coming!’, a living history day this February, to meet the Roman reenactors & find out more about their lives too. Arthur Rank Hospice Charity is asking the local community for their support with its annual Christmas Tree collection, sponsored by Cooke, Curtis & Co (Trumpington) and Cyber Business Growth (Royston). The ‘treasure hunt for trees’ will be taking place from 6th - 9th January 2022.

It is the seventh year of the fundraising scheme which last year saw more than 2900 pre-loved trees collected and composted, raising over £54,000 for the Hospice’s vital frontline services! The scheme depends on a unique collaboration between the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity team, Just Helping, Cambridge City Council and South Cambridgeshire County Council, local businesses and scores of volunteers who generously donate their time. They are appealing for more volunteers who can drive (preferably their own van) and crew members, to help this January. A video illustrating what is involved when you volunteer as a tree collector can be found on Arthur Rank Hospice Charity’s YouTube channel (short watch - 1 min 36 seconds). If you, or someone you know, might be able to help, please contact the Hospice’s fundraising team on 01223 675888 or email christmastrees@arhc.org.uk.

ST MARY'S SURGERY TO GET MUCH NEEDED FACELIFT. COMMUNITY NEWS

The partners at St Mary’s Surgery are delighted to announce that after a lot of dedicated hard work over the past two years, they now have full planning permission granted & funding in place to begin work on the redevelopment of the surgery premises. These major renovations will allow them to future proof the healthcare we provide for decades to come. As the building project continues to develop over the next 12 months, keep an eye on their website and social media for you updates on progress. Information has been on social media and the surgery website, warning patients of the changes.

FROM THE SURGERY Why do we need to expand? We have been at No 37 St Mary’s Street since 1991 (prior to that in Chapel Street) providing comprehensive NHS healthcare to the people of Ely and local villages. However, Ely is expanding and patient numbers are expected to grow year on year. Today, we provide healthcare services to over 16,000 patients and the scope of work we undertake has significantly increased over the years. With new houses already being built across the area, demand for healthcare services continues to grow. Therefore, we want to do what we can now to maximise the surgery’s capacity to meet these needs.

The current building at 37 St Mary’s Street is closed to patients (from 17th December) to allow us to move into our temporary premises at the Princess of Wales Hospital (POW) site where we will operate from. This will allow the builders to start their work early in the New Year. We anticipate being back in our lovely new building in November 2022. Changes for patients Our dispensary is now at 80 St Mary’s Street. Services will remain fully functional through the renovation project for our dispensing patients. Patients wishing to collect medication, who normally collect from St Mary’s dispensary, should go to 80 St Mary’s Street. You will NOT BE able to collect your prescription from the temporary premises at the POW site. If you live in Ely and have a query about your medication, please contact your nominated pharmacy. AskmyGP and our phone system will be working as normal and GP, nurse and appointments with other clinical staff will continue as planned. Please do remember that from Monday 20th December, you should come to our new temporary surgery premises on the POW site for any faceto-face appointment you have. There is plenty of parking on site and the new building will be clearly signposted ‘St Mary’s Surgery’.

To put it simply, we want to invest in the future healthcare needs of all our patients and the growing population of Ely and surrounding areas as well as maintain a city centre presence. An expanded, modernised and fully refurbished building will enable us to do that. The New building for the surgery is planned for completion in Nov 22 40 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

During these calls we will work with them to increase their understanding of Dementia, we will identify and suggest strategies that may help overcome difficulties they are experiencing; when required we will make referrals to other agencies; we will work with them to increase their emotional resilience and very importantly provide a listening ear. We continue to offer intense support to get people through the difficulty they face, our goal is to get them to weekly call and once the situation is stable we offer keeping in touch calls. If you have anyone who could benefit from our help and support please don’t hesitate to contact us. To make referrals or speak to staff involved in the project please call us on 01223 620962 or email cambridgeshiredementia@alzheimers.org.uk

CAN YOU STOP BEFORE YOU HIT THE VEHICLE IN FRONT? The important thing to understand about deceleration (i.e. braking) is that the process is not constant. You might think that a car travelling at 60mph would shed a larger proportion of its speed at the onset of braking. The opposite is true. Over a total stopping distance of (say) 40 metres over half the speed is wiped off in the last 10 metres. It takes 30 metres to get from 60mph to 30mph; just 10 metres to get from 30mph to zero. You are on a motorway travelling at 70mph, then you remember the chocolate bar that you hid in the glove box and go for the grab. When you look up there is a sea of brake lights across all three lanes. In the second that passed the traffic has slowed to 50mph. By the time you react they are doing 30mph with a rate of deceleration a lot faster than yours. You can’t match them, so unless you have the clear distance between you and the vehicle in front you find yourself at the wrong end of the braking curve and about to collide with the vehicle in front. A vehicle builds up kinetic energy by a factor of its weight multiplied by the square of its speed, and as a result the braking distance increases exponentially (this is one of Sir Isaac Newton’s laws of physics). So, if you double the speed, you quadruple the braking distance; and a Ford Fiesta moving at 40mph hits with the same energy as a Juggernaut doing 10mph. RoADARC’s mission is to promote safer driving and riding. Our training is free with an annual membership fee of £10. Visit our website at: www.roadarc.org.uk for further details. This issue’s top tips: •

42 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

In dry conditions allow a minimum of 2 seconds between you and the vehicle in front and at least 4 seconds in the wet. In frosty and icy conditions allow a lot further. Maximise grip with the road surface by having your tyres at the correct pressure and with a good depth of tread. Check pressures weekly.

Fenprobe Talking News Fenprobe is a free service for blind or visually impaired residents in East Cambridgeshire. It’s moved on considerably since it was launched in late 1978, when the weekly news was sent out on 30 minute cassette tapes. Now there’s a smart black player (free of charge) with bright yellow buttons, which runs on rechargeable batteries – and the news is delivered on a USB stick, which holds a lot more information. Fenprobe rents a studio in Ely, where over forty volunteers help read the news, on a five-weekly rota. There’s also a monthly magazine. Users of the service need to register, and must be referred by a doctor, optician or professional carer. If you know someone who has difficulty reading the local news, and who would benefit from this service, you can contact the secretary on 01353 861153. email: jsmith9306@aol.com Fen Speak We are Ely's regular poetry and spoken word open mic night with a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
