Deadline for the FEBRUARY 2018 issue 10th JANUARY 2017
We have had another great year, here at Elyi HQ. Madeleine and I will look back on 2017 as a year working on the Elyi that has been filled with some great new friends and experiences. December has whizzed by in a blur and here we are about to welcome in 2018. I hope you had a fantastic festive season. We certainly aren’t short of things to do and places to go here in Ely, are we? Not a day goes by without a concert, gig, exhibition or club social event taking place. It is a good time to reflect on what has been achieved and make new plans for the year ahead. We’re pleased with how many businesses are using the magazine and we hear, both personally and via the delivery team, that people appreciate the magazine coming through their doors every month. For 2018, we plan to develop our editorial content and diversity within the magazine as we do want to reflect the activities of all the different peoples in and around Ely. We will continue to promote good causes and feature aspects of established Ely culture and history, but we want to hear from anyone who has a story that will interest and inspire others. Don’t be shy! We were particularly pleased to work along side other businesses, councillors, our friends at the Ely Standard and MetroRod on judging and sponsoring the Ely Hero Awards and look forward to publicising the event again this coming year. We wish you a very happy New Year and look forward to meeting and serving even more of the Ely population in 2018! warmest wishes Bridget & Madeleine

RICHARD HOBBS MAYOR OF ELY
Photographs: Mike Rouse/Ely Standard
A big thank you to all those volunteers who gave their time freely to make Ely a colourful and vibrant City over this Christmastime, especially the Christmas Lights team and the Traders for joining in. A team effort to make Ely the place to shop. And to everyone who turned up for the very cold switch-on. My appearance with the Stormtroopers is an experience I will never forget. Over the last month we have experienced some wonderful concerts with the Military Wives and a week later the Band of the Household Cavalry together with the Morriston Orpheus Male Voice Choir from South Wales. The market place was surrounded by runners in Christmas hats and festive outfits for the Arthur Rank Annual Charity Run, which raises money for this hospice. I was glad to start it rather than run it. Well done to all the runners!
I also attended the Awarding of GCSE Certificates to Year 11 at Ely College. The College goes from strength to strength with these results the best ever. I wish all the students good luck for the future in their chosen careers.
A Christingle Service in the Cathedral is a wonderful experience. With the Christingles lit and the Cathedral lights lowered singing “Away in a Manger” with children is a delight. Thank you The Children’s Society for this Annual Service. Our Christmas preparations are now completed with the City of Ely Military Bands Christmas Concert. We always enjoy the festive flavour of this annual concert. Pat and I wish you all a Peaceful and Happy New Year, as we look forward to 2018 which will see the completion of the Southern Bypass, and the opening our the new 8-lane swimming pool and Sports Village. regards Richard
I visited the Lantern School with the organisers of Ely Firework Display to present Voluntary groups in the area with monies raised from this Community event, long may it continue.

It’s now a regular feature of every year. Otherwise clean shaven gentlemen all over the country turn into hairy faced hunks for the month of November, and a group of seven Ely men have got involved and so far raised in excess of £2,866 by growing moustaches. These gorgeous fellas are Ritchie Taylor, Danny Sirota, Rob Curtis, Ian Barnes, Gary Francis, Phil Rains, Timothy Bootle. Well done to them! The group is creatively named ‘the magnifi’tash seven’ and donations can still be made on their Mo sista page run by Kim Mave Houghton (pictued centre) who kindly sent this in.

THE RIVERSIDE AT ELY A NEW BOOK BY PAMELA BLAKEMAN
It is 25 years since Pamela Blakeman’s major work on Ely’s history The Book of Ely was published and the Riverside at Ely, published by Ely History Publications, she tells us at the age of 88, is likely to be her last.
The Riverside at Ely is obviously a labour of love from a historian who has contributed so much to our knowledge of our city.
Pamela was born on Broad Street and paints a wide ranging picture of the area all around her and the history alongside the River Ouse. This is the most personal of her various histories, giving glimpses of her own life and recalling people and places she knew.
Pam and Mike’s books, along with many other titles all about our local area and history, can all be found at Burrows Book Shop in High Street Passage, Ely
Old Ely characters like Ted Appleyard, Sid Merry, Scotts the basket makers and the catches of local fishermen are recalled alongside the history of Babylon, the various bridges and the numerous, shops, businesses and pubs in the area, including the challenge to find where the Bridge public house was. Anyone know? There is the story of how Cecil Burrows saved another boy’s life and the misfortunes of some who were less lucky in the dark waters of the Ouse. Pamela pays tribute to her mentor Reg Holmes, while drawing on some of his research, and to Ann Holton Krayenbuhl, both of whom contributed so much to our knowledge of Ely’s history. Many ‘riversiders’ have contributed their memories including Ann Powell, and in a fully illustrated book there is also recognition of that great Ely photographer Tom Bolton.

Energie Fitness for Women works for us! Since beginning at Energie in January 2017 I have lost 2 ½ stone and have dropped 2 dress sizes. I had no specific goals when I started, just a desire to make a long term lifestyle change and everyone at Energie has helped me achieve this. The 8 week reviews keep you motivated and the workout boost gives you the chance to mix up your workout and challenge yourself, so there’s never a chance of getting bored with the same old routine! For me it’s not just about weight loss, I have found that my improved fitness has really helped my joint hypermobility syndrome and a stronger core has definitely made a difference with my back pain. The help and support of the staff along with the general friendly atmosphere makes every workout session so much more enjoyable.
I had never been to a gym but 3 years ago I decided to try, to continue looking after my husband (he is disabled in a powerchair). I had my own list of illnesses – degenerative spine, hypertension, atrial fibrillation and arthritis. I weighed 85kg and my physical life was full of “I can’t”... Now, I still have the medical issues but my life has changed to “I can!” I follow a programme and my first achievement was the ability to turn my head left and right, followed by stretching my arms above my head - both of which physios had advised no longer possible. Thanks to learning how to use my core muscles, I am able to move a reluctant powerchair without hurting myself. I attend the club 3 times weekly and my visits are my “me” time. I am not forced to work at a particular pace, it’s up to me how much I push myself and encouragement from the girls is always there. It is an all female environment that is so understanding of individual needs. Another added bonus is that I now weigh 77kg! In the 3 years, I have not had to visit the doctors for any of my niggles. At my annual check up I am told everything is fine and whatever I do is helping immensely.

The Field Theatre Group are proud to announce that they have received National Lottery funding for the production of their brand new drama, Holding Hands. Moving, blackly comic, and terrifying by turns, Holding Hands is a compelling exploration of the impact of dementia. A story for our time, it is also a testimony to the power of love in a disintegrating landscape. The lottery grant will enable The Field to create and tour the play to locations across Cambridgeshire and Norfolk during the summer of 2018. Writer Deborah Curtis says: ‘I’m sure people may think, ‘’Oh, a play about dementia, that sounds incredibly dull and worthy. And not exactly a barrel of laughs, either. But as anyone who has had any experience of dementia will know, it is a rollercoaster condition. There are times of sadness and high drama interspersed with moments of absurd comedy, and occasionally real terror. When a loved one is afflicted by a mental illness, those who care for them are often left struggling to cope. Information and advice can be hard to come by and families can be left feeling as though we are embarking on a bewildering journey, a journey without a map. Deborah came to this piece as an actress and writer, but most importantly as a daughter. Holding Hands highlights all the many aspects of dementia; from the ridiculous and bizarre to the utterly heartbreaking and she hopes that audiences will feel free to laugh along with the cast at the absurdly comical episodes, while also gaining a greater awareness of the terrible impact of the condition.
Field Theatre Chair and producer of Holding Hands, Jennifer Stevens, says: ‘Holding Hands is The Field’s first foray into social issue drama, and we are very
26 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
excited to be bringing this important new work to audiences next year. Dementia is a condition that affects over a million people in the UK, and this number is set to rise. Dementia is a national problem, but Holding Hands focuses the story very much on the personal.” This is a resonant drama which packs a powerful social message. Based on real life personal testimonies, Several of the production crew have had personal experience of coping with various forms of dementia, and this has added greatly to the creative process in this production. The hope is that the play will open debate about the on-going and ever-increasing problem of how to safeguard vulnerable loved-ones in our communities. If you would like to find out more or book a performance of the play for your venue or group please email: fieldtheatregroup@hotmail.co.uk

Director of Drama and Theatre at King’s Ely, Nick Huntington, who organised the masterclass, said: “Flawless is one of the premier dance collectives in the world and to see our students enjoying such a fantastic, high octane workshop, alongside a small crew from Sarah Baker’s Funk It Up Dance group, was really something special. CAN EVERYONE SING? The number of times I’ve heard someone say ‘oh I can’t sing!’ I don’t really understand that statement. You see to me if we all have the same anatomy, a larynx, vocal folds etc then surely we can learn to sing as well as the next person can’t we? If we know how to do it! Or the number of singers who have said ‘sometimes it’s fine and then other times it just won’t come out!’ Wouldn’t it be great if one could have a predictable instrument. If when we opened our mouths to sing we knew what was going to come out. Or at least if what came out wasn’t what we had hoped for we knew why and we could do something about it! Wouldn’t that eradicate the fear, put us in control, and better still give us options? What I love about teaching singing is the satisfaction I see on someone’s face when they finally hit that note, sing that phrase, feel the release of sound come from their own mouth. My theory is if you understand what you have and

then learn how to use it there is no limit to what you can do. When it comes to the voice, knowledge is power. Mix in with that practice, determination and patience and the possibilities are endless. It’s the desire for that control and understand that led me to work with the Estill model. Having previously studied the Estill model as a performer at the Royal Academy of Music, in 2014 I revisited it from the teacher’s perspective and began my Certified Master Teacher training with highly respected and internationally acclaimed Instructor Anne-Marie Speed. The model, developed by Jo Estill (internationally renowned singer and vocal practitioner) allows the singer complete control of their voice. It’s not a technique it’s a mode of function
that breaks down each individual part of the voice. Once the singer has independent control of the structures they are then able to make choices encouraging them to think more as an artist rather than just recreating what they have heard. It makes for a predictable and reliable instrument. It’s not just useful for the individual it’s useful for choirs and ensembles too. Allowing them to create different timbres guided by the text and emotional dynamics of the song. So if you want that control and assurance from your voice or you just fancy giving it a go for fun get in touch. First 30 mins taster lesson free. A SIXTY YEAR OLD FRIENDSHIP Many residents of our city might not realise that Ely and Ribe in Denmark can boast one of the longest established twin-town relationships. Started in September 1956, when representatives of the then Ely Urban District Council, Ely Rotary and Ely Cathedral visited Ribe in West Jutland – Denmark’s Oldest Town - this special relationship has continued to flourish. Initially an activity for those who could afford the relatively high costs of travel across the North Sea, the link became more accessible to all with the advent of low-cost flights to Denmark in the early 1990s. Now Denmark is a short 90-minute flight away, via Stansted Airport. The twinning is now promoted by the Ely-Ribe Association and its equivalent in Ribe. Its role is to encourage opportunities for like-minded individuals and organisations in the two cities to meet and hopefully form lasting friendships. Many people are pleasantly surprised at the similarities between the Danes and ourselves – our sense of humour, community spirit and our views on the world in general – and there is a great deal to be learned by experiencing life in another country at first hand. Our members are regularly hosted by Ribe families during visits to Denmark, and we offer the same facility to Danes visiting Ely. Recently, choirs have got together to arrange concerts at each others’ home venues and we are now working with various

sports clubs in Ely to establish contacts with their equivalents in Ribe. Such a long standing relationship is worth celebrating, and to mark the 50th anniversary of the twinning in 2006, our association commissioned the Ely-Ribe Tapestry, which is now on permanent display in the foyer of The Maltings at Ely’s Riverside. For the 60th anniversary, commemorative events were held in both Ely and Ribe. There is a bright future for the twinning, according to Association Chairman Howard McMillan. “Our ties are now stronger than ever and our members continue to benefit from many lasting friendships with people in our twin town. We look forward to welcoming a party from Ribe who will be attending the Cathedral Flower Festival in June next year, and any groups or individuals who would like be a part of our activities are very welcome to join us.” Howard can be contacted on 01353 667949 or by e-mail at elyribe.association@ntlworld.com Find out more about the history of the twinning and the Ely-Ribe Tapestry at: www.elyribe-tapestry.co.uk

WHAT DO YOU DO IF YOU NOTICE YOUR SIGHT AND HEARING ARE GETTING WORSE? Thousands of people in the UK are living with combined sight and hearing loss. But how can you tell whether you or someone you know has sight and hearing loss and what you should do about it. Christine Hardy, Advocacy, Rights and Awareness Manager at Deafblind UK said: “Early signs of sight and hearing loss are not always as obvious as you think. Sometimes people may leave post unopened or become more hesitant to go out and about. You may also notice they adopt an unusual head position or even have burnt fingers from misuse of the oven or hot water. “It is vitally important to have regular eye tests to check for changes in your sight. These will also detect any eye conditions such as macular degeneration or glaucoma before you notice symptoms yourself.
women and children and think that other people are mumbling. If you notice a drop in hearing, visit your GP who may refer you to an audiologist.” If you recognise any of these signs in people you know, there are lots of small things you can do to make a big difference to their lives; from adjusting room lighting to using 3D stickers around the house.

Our next talk is: Monday 15th January 2018 Wayne Cocroft How the Cold War Became Heritage Historic England It is now over 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the subsequent demise of the communist regimes that had dominated Eastern Europe for over 40 years. This abrupt end to a political reality that had defined world politics for a generation led to a massive drawdown of military forces and an expectation of a ‘Peace Dividend’. In the United Kingdom many hundreds of defence sites ranging from large airfields to small monitoring posts were closed and placed on the open market. The number of sites being released appeared to be
overwhelming, but also presented a unique opportunity to safeguard key sites that reflected our national experience of this period of recent history. Drawing on examples from the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States, this talk will explore how the most significant Cold War sites were selected for protection and how they are now being conserved and presented. Wayne Cocroft is an archaeologist and Manager of Historic England’s Investigation East team based in Cambridge. For over 25 years he has specialised in the archaeological recording and assessment of redundant military sites. The talk is at 8.00 pm in the Methodist Church Hall, Ely. Entry is via the gate at the rear of St Mary’s Street Car Park, Ely ADMISSION: Visitors £2.50 – Members free. Want to know more phone? 01353 669326
