As we reflect upon 2018, we remember the excitement that embraced Ely anticipating the visit of the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall last month. He is patron of the Thomas Parsons Charity so popped in to the Alms Houses in St Mary’s Street. He also visited the Stain Glass Museum, had lunch in the Poets House and toured the delights of Ely Market. Local schools were amongst those invited to welcome The Prince of Wales and Camilla to the City. They received a warm welcome when they visited the market place and sampled some of the local produce. Take a look at Mayor Mike Rouse’s photos on page 30-31. Boy! does he get about! Ely continues to grow and everytime a new house appears, so another magazine will drop onto another door mat and a new reader learns about all the fantastic events, businesses and groups to join in the City. We are so proud to be part of that warm welcome for newcomers to our city. We would like to thank all our readers for their support over the past twelve months and to our advertisers who promote their local businesses through the Elyi. We know you are working hard so we work hard for you. Its not every hotel that gets to make lunch for the heir to the throne so why not take advantage of the voucher with this magazine and head over to Poets House for 25% off food and drinks. 11a is celebrating its 1st birthday in the New Year. 10% discount Tues - Thurs! Its a great city centre location, so keep your eye on the other events and special menus throughout the coming year. A huge, huge thank you to our trusted delivery team who have done a fantastic job delivering the magazine and don’t forget we have village collection points in Sutton, Witchford, Isleham, Fordham, Soham and Littleport. If it snows, take care on the ice, look out for your neighbours. We have a great community spirit in Ely, if it snows, let it flow. Bridget and Madeleine together with our delivery team would like to wish you a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR! www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 3

ELY MUSEUM Emily Allen Custodian at Ely Museum It was in January 1728 that Nathaniel Alvine became “Keeper of His Majesties Gaole and House of Correction at Ely”. Ely Gaol, which was established on its current site by Bishop Peter Gunning in 1679, often found itself in a poor state of repair. Due to a chronic lack of funding, the gaol fell further into disrepair, while often also being overcrowded and rife with disease. Alvine noted the poor state in which he found the Bishops Gaol, stating that there were “no irons nor locks for the felons” upon their incarceration, and that “neither the gates are of sufficient strength to keep any Prisoner within the yard” As a result of this lack of security in the building, prisoners continually broke free and made their bids for freedom across the Fens! Alvine even tells of a prisoner who escaped “through the wall that held him from sweet liberty and disguising himself as a woman, got clear away down the river!” several reports over the following years report similar incidents, and it appears that this was a common problem at Ely Gaol! In addition to the awful conditions endured by the prisoners, life for Nathaniel Alvine, who also lived in the filthy, freezing gaol, would have been difficult too. Despite having his own family to support, Alvine laments that “neither my father or my predecessor have been paid the legal pension to the great detriment of both our families”

A reconstruction of the gaol cells at Ely Museum. Note the prisoners are chained to the floor & walls, and some made to wear the barbaric spiked collars. The condition of the building was so poor & escaping a regular occurrence, the gaoler did what he could to keep them chained to the building!

With a string of poorly, if at all, paid gaolers and a building in desperate need of repair, it is easy to see how by 1770 the gaol was considered to be in a “poor, if not ruinous condition”. The cells were divided with horizontal planks, this original section from the 18th Century has a hole in the bottom to allow the gaoler to chain the prisoners to the wall

Eventually, by 1836 the gaol was permanently closed and prisoners moved on to Cambridge County Prison. This gaol building eventually became Ely Museum in 1997 emily@elymuseum.org.uk Tel: 01353 666655 www.ElyMuseum.org.uk www.facebook.com/ElyMuseum www.twitter.com/ElyMuseum www.instagram.com/Ely_Museum 4 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

ELY WILDLIFE WATCH SEEKS VOLUNTEER LEADERS Ely Wildlife Watch is looking for volunteers who would like to register as Leaders to help deliver fun and enjoyable monthly wildlife sessions to children. Wildlife Watch is the junior branch of the Wildlife Trusts and the UK's leading environmental action club for kids. It encourages 5-11 year olds to have an interest in wildlife, and the world around them, through fun activities on environmental and natural history topics such as practical conservation activities, wildlife themed arts and crafts, insect surveys, pond dipping and night walks. Jo Evans, Leader at Ely Wildlife Watch said: "Watch Leading a very rewarding role. We now have an urgent need for leaders to help run the group as Clive and Helen, Ely Wildlife Watch's long-standing leaders, are now stepping down for retirement. You don't need to be an expert in wildlife, just enthusiastic, concerned about the environment and enjoy working with children and young people." Ely Wildlife Watch takes place for two hours on the second Saturday of each month and you'll receive training and support from The Wildlife Trust. If you'd like to find out more about becoming a leader for Ely Wildlife Watch then contact: Jo Evans on 07801226831 or email jo.evans@emeraldfrog.co.uk

CURRY ’N’ QUIZ NIGHT RAISES A TASTY SUM A novel curry ’n’ quiz night at Ely’s popular Indian restaurant, Le Spice, raised £600 which will be used to help local children and others overseas. Organiser Steuart Northfield was quizmaster and ten teams of six battled it out to claim the winner’s prize - 200 rupees, just over £2! The sterling proceeds have been shared equally between Ely College, which will use their £300 to help schools in Kenya, and Highfield Littleport Academy, where their share will buy outdoor play equipment. English teacher, Nikisha Burke, who received the cheque on behalf of Ely College, said £300 would buy much needed teaching equipment for the two Kenyan schools. Highfield Littleport Academy opened last year and currently has 68 pupils with special educational needs who come from all over the area. Head Yvonne Skillern said: “We have wonderful brand new premises but we badly need specialist outdoor play equipment so this £300 will be put to very good use.”

ARTHUR RANK 5K FUN RUN

An enthusiastic display of runners turned out at the Ely Cathedral in fancy dress on a chilly Sunday morning in November to support the Arthur Rank Hospice. Among them were four athletes from the Rotary Club of Ely, three of whom were over 70. They all completed the 5k fun run. The members of the club donated just over £500.

END OF YEAR NEWS FROM YOUR ELECTED MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, LUCY FRAZER MP

As we welcome in a new year, I wanted to reflect on the last 12 months which seem, once again, to have flown by. Working together with local campaign groups, councillors, the Mayor and Government, I am delighted that projects I have championed are now reaching fruition. The Ely Bypass has now been finalised, 95% of premises in our constituency now have access to superfast broadband (although I continue to press for full rollout in some of the outstanding ‘not-spots’.) and a Government backed, teacher recruitment website I campaigned for, is being rolled out nationally. I am proud to have supported a number of successful campaigns including ensuring the continuation of the Princess of Wales’ Local Urgent Care pilot and helping local commuters regain a pre 9 am off peak train service to Cambridge after timetable changes made it ‘peak’. Longer term projects including upgrading the A10, building a station in Soham, improving junction 37 on the A142/A14 are ongoing.  As improvements are made to the rail at Ely junction I continue to work to ensure that Queen Adelaide and Prickwillow residents are protected. Also ongoing is my commitment to local schools - securing extra funding, keeping up to date with our headteachers and overseeing my fifth inter-school debating competition. I have enjoyed taking my youth engagement programme, designed to give school children an insight into real life politics, to Ely College and Kings Ely and

also welcoming Kings Ely students to Parliament. At a recent Opportunity Areas update meeting, I was pleased to see how grants are now being made available to, amongst others, Cheveley Church of England School, The Harbour School and Ely St John’s Primary School I have brought a number of Cabinet Ministers to our constituency this year to press our local causes including Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling and Secretary for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Michael Gove. Thankfully business continues to thrive in our region. I am working closely with local independent shop owners, and our councillors in East Cambridgeshire to help support our high street. I always enjoy meeting constituents, whether welcoming you to Westminster or seeing you at an event, group gathering or surgery. If you are interested in a free tour of Parliament, have anything you wish to raise with me personally or would like to be added to my email newsletter list please email me at: lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk. You can also follow me on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FrazerLucy/ or visit my web page www.lucyfrazer.org.uk

ROTARY GLOBAL SCHOLAR REBECCA DU Every year the Ely Hereward Rotary Club acts as host to a Rotary Global Scholar from abroad whilst studying for a year at one of the Cambridge Universities. This year they are hosting Rebecca Du from Houston, Texas, who is studying global health and medicine at Robinson College. Rebecca (pictured second from right) has secured an entry in the 2019 London Marathon to raise funds for Hospice UK, and has already competed in the Arthur Rank Festive 5k on Sunday 24th November along with Hereward Club member Michael Judkins (far right) - achieving a time of 23 minutes 51 seconds – not a bad start for someone who is not a regular runner! If you would like to donate to Rebecca's sponsorship for Hospice UK her Just Giving page is at https:// www.justgiving.com/fundraising/rebecca-du The Ely Hereward Rotary Club has been busy in the run up to Christmas, acting as High Street marshals for the Ely Christmas Lights switch-on – where their Mulled Wine and Hot Mince Pies

stall raised over £540 for local charities and good causes – and, jointly with the Rotary Club of Ely and volunteer helpers, out and about around the streets of Ely bringing Father Christmas to visit local children, and raising money for local charities and good causes. For more information about the Ely Hereward Rotary club please visit http://rotaryclubelyhereward.org/ or find us on Facebook.

HAVE YOU CONSIDERED BEING A SCHOOL GOVERNOR? • • • •

Are you interested in education and how schools work? Would you like to make a positive difference to the life chances of children? Do you want to share your skills to make that difference? Would you enjoy being part of a team that provides critical challenge and support to the leadership team whose aim is driving up standards?

If you can say ‘yes’ to all of these, consider investigating the role and putting yourself forward as a governor at Ely St John’s Community Primary School. Being a Governor is a real commitment, but is a rewarding and enjoyable experience. It requires regular attendance at formal meetings, which are usually held in the evening, although getting to know the school well requires some planned time in school during the day. The best way to find out about the role and why people do it is to talk to someone who is already a Governor. You may be surprised how many of 8 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

your acquaintances have this experience. You could also contact Ms Liz Bassett, the head teacher, who will be only too happy to talk to you. Schools look for a variety of experience and skills across their governing skills, eg finance, HR or business. Training is important for all Governors and is readily available. We are currently looking for a co-opted Governor. Selection is undertaken by our Governing Body. Does this role interest you? Do you want to find out more information? If so, take the first step and contact us on: office@ elystjohns.cambs.sch.uk and express your interest. We will be pleased to talk to you and we will send you all the information you need to make the decision whether to apply. Closing date for completed applications is Friday 25 January 2019.

ELY CONSORT

A Review of Ely Consort’s In Memoriam Concert on Saturday 1st December in Ely Cathedral Lady Chapel by Rosemary Westwell.

WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

(A Women-led, Global, Ecumenical Movement) FRIDAY 1st MARCH 2019, 1.30pm at St Mary’s Church, Ely Come – Everything is Ready! The World Day of Prayer is an international, interchurch organisation which enables us to hear the thoughts of women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns and prayers. On Friday 1st March services will be held nationwide and worldwide on the theme of ‘Come – Everything is Ready!’, written this year by the women of Slovenia. They encourage us to reflect on the barriers they have faced since the end of the Second World War when their country, one of the smallest and youngest countries in Europe, was a part of Yugoslavia. They share the challenges they have met and the hopes they have for the future. The Day of Prayer is celebrated in over 120 countries. It begins in Samoa – with prayer in native languages travelling throughout the world – through Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, before finishing in American Samoa some 38 hours later. Come and join in with the local service in Ely, taking place at St Mary’s Church, Ely, starting at 1.30pm (note earlier start time). Why not come along and find out more about the theme and Slovenia? All are welcome to attend – men, women, young people, and children (a crèche room is available). Refreshments will be served after the service. Further info from Celia: 07810 782641 or see the website: www.wwdp.org.uk

Ely Consort is a name to be reckoned with. This must be one of the best choirs in the district. It isn’t until you hear good quality music produced by an excellent choir like this that you realize what you have been missing. Director Matthew Rudd really knows how to shape and develop a beautiful, well balanced sound and how to vary the pace, rhythm and dynamics to create mesmerising effects. Russian Orthodox Church music brings to mind deep bass voices singing in open harmony. Tonight we certainly had the gorgeous deep basses and also a well produced tone in each of voice parts. With the gorgeous sound this choir produced echoing round the Lady Chapel it was easy to imagine we were transported into the depths of Russia. The theme of the evening: remembrance, commemoration and reconciliation was well reflected in the pieces. The programme was based around Rachmaninov’s unaccompanied ‘All Night Vigil’. The powerful richness of the voices was apparent from the start. Singing in Russian, this choir’s attention to detail, its expressiveness and precision were exceptional. Other works included David Bednall’s ‘To a Missing Friend and ‘The Soldier’, a delightfully refreshing ’Do not Stand at my Grave and Weep’ by David Jepson, the tumultuous ‘Ring out, Wild Bells’ by Jonathan Dove and the first performance of a commissioned work by Sarah Quartel ‘’Hope’ is the thing with feathers’. Sarah’s work was undoubtedly one of the highlights of the evening. Charlie Penn’s accompaniments were superb. He achieved amazing effects in Jonathan Dove’s ‘Ring out, wild bells’. This was indeed an excellent concert. The next events to look forward to are concert on Saturday 16th March in Ely Methodist Church and on Saturday 29th June in St. Mary’s Church, Burwell. THE BEAUTIFUL STITCH - EMBROIDERERS’ GUILD EXHIBITION Ely Cathedral - 5th - 28th February 2019

The Embroiderers’ Guild Collection is full of stories behind the techniques and styles of embroidery on display. Incorporating textiles from previous centuries to the present day, this special exhibition will inform and, in some cases, amaze the visitor and may even alter preconceived ideas on embroidery. For this exhibition, five themes were chosen, representing particular strengths of the Collection. Embroidery as Art considers the emergence of textiles as an art form in the 20th century, when new materials and techniques became popular and art schools and colleges began to offer degrees in the study of textiles in many contemporary styles. Embroidery in Education examines the importance of education; from early needlework samplers stitched by young girls in the 17th century; through Berlin wool work samplers in the late 18th century, to samplers of the 20th century. Embroidery as Fashion looks at the embellishment of clothing and accessories with embroidery and encompasses work by professional embroiderers

and current experts in the field, using both hand and machine embroidery. Embroidery as Industry shows how embroidery spread from individuals, through cottage industries to the mass production of embroidery in factories. Notable among factory workshops in the past were Morris & Co and the Singer Sewing Machine Company. Embroidery as Status encompasses the use of embroidery as a symbol of status. Used for many years by the wealthy and powerful in society; in religion, Royalty, government and power; embroidery emphasises rank and authority. Sumptuous embroidery in metal thread, silk and jewels reflect the importance of the wearer and the occasion. Exhibition Opening Times Mon - Sat: 9.30am - 4pm. Sun: 12noon - 4pm Tickets Available from Box Office: 01353 660349 or www.elycathedral.org All tickets include standard entry into Ely Cathedral.

CAMBS VILLAGE COLLEGES HERITAGE PROJECT LAUNCHES WITH NATIONAL LOTTERY SUPPORT Soham-based Viva Arts and Community Group has received £65,500 from the National Lottery to deliver a community project celebrating the heritage of the Cambridgeshire Village Colleges programme. The project, which combines oral history and research with travelling exhibitions, film and learning resources has been made possible by money raised by National Lottery Players. Established by education visionary Henry Morris, Cambridgeshire’s Chief Education Officer for three decades from 1922, the county’s village college scheme was revolutionary. The Village College is an institution unique to Cambridgeshire but the model has inspired educators worldwide. It was conceived to provide education for 11 to 16 year olds by day and educational and leisure facilities to adults at other times, thus serving the whole community. Morris famously described this as “raising the school leaving age to ninety”, and believed that education should be a lifelong process accessible by all those living in the villages and small towns around Cambridgeshire. 10 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

This project will gather personal stories from people who knew Henry Morris, worked with him and, to a greater degree, benefitted from his vision for community learning. Viva have the full support of the Henry Morris Memorial Trust who have generously contributed £5000 toward the project costs as well as full access to their archive. Viva have also received endorsement for the project from existing village colleges and Cambridgeshire County Council. Volunteers will be trained and work together to present this heritage to the broadest possible audience through a community film, project website, a travelling exhibition and learning resource packs for schools. If you would like further information or would like to be involved as a volunteer please contact Rachael Polsom on 01353 722228 or email info@ hlfvillagecolleges@gmail.com.

NEW YEAR, MORE FOCUS? The New Year is an ideal time to think ahead and look at new marketing opportunities, and focus on how you are promoting and communicating your business to current and prospective clients. Sometimes a new year gives us the reason to take a step back and really look at where you are NOW and where you WANT to be. This may result in a new project, new product or simply expanding to reach more customers, the big challenge is how to put this all together and get it actioned. Where do you start? Here are 4 quick tips to help:

Focus Have very clear goals of what you would like to achieve; for example bring a new product to market, improve your customer’s experience, expand your digital engagement.

Are you talking to me? Do you know who your customers are and who you want to be reaching? Having insight into your target market and potential new markets will help develop the plans of what’s next.

“So What…” Communicate your strengths clearly and promote those key differentiators because that is what your potential customers want to know. Break through the noise of your competition.

Have a bit of fun This time of year is the perfect time to push your brand boundaries a little and incorporate a little fun into your communications. You never know it might turn the head of that next big client. The hard part is now putting this all in place. If you need some help or an extra pair of marketing hands, please do give us a call to talk through how we can work with you in 2019. No project is too small. We are a local business looking to support your business development. Red Chrome Marketing, jo.ford@redchrome.co.uk, 07588 618590

The Community Bus Partnership has been formed by the City of Ely Council, East Cambridgeshire District Council, and local residents, working with the County Council, to help promote the service and use of the bus in Ely. Our aim is to help the service establish itself as a permanent facility for Ely residents and to assist its expansion to meet the needs of a growing community. If we can demonstrate that residents regularly use this bus, we have a really good chance of negotiating to extend the service. Please support the bus so that we can plan for a better local circuit service! If we use it, we will not lose it. ELY ROCK EELS 999 LINE Infamous for their local random acts of kindness, Ely Rock Eels (ERE) have struck again! This time Ely’s 3 emergency service stations were the locations for their ‘Rock Drop’ on 24th November. “We are always looking for a new idea to keep our community rock painting fresh in order to make the people of Ely smile,” explained Fleur Patten of Ely Rock Eels. “We are very lucky to have police, ambulance and fire stations in Ely and we just wanted to express our respect and gratitude for our life savers and their daily service to our community.”

linked back to ERE’s painting of rocks for each of the victims of the fire on the year anniversary last June. As a truly inclusive community project, 3rd Ely cubs contributed 60 of the 999 painted rocks with the help of Explorer, George Patten. Hundreds of hand painted rocks which incorporated the theme of emergency services graced the #999Line. They were laid along the wall in front of the ambulance and police stations in town for maximum impact and the fire-themed rocks were laid in front of the fire station in Egrument Street. As well as the fire engine and fire fighter rocks, Green for Grenfell rocks showed solidarity for those fire fighters who fought the Grenfell fire in 2017. This

Positive comments flowed in as a result of the surprise Rock Drop, including from the staff of the 3 emergency stations. Sergeant Phil Priestley said; “Pulling into work this morning was quite a lovely surprise! It has really made everyone smile. It’s a very thoughtful gesture.” If you would like to join in with Ely Rock Eels you can visit them on their Facebook group to find out more.

A HEARTWARMING STORY OF ADOPTION Chris and Joanna tell their story of adopting two boys. Chris and I both have a strong sense of family and always wanted children. We tried fertility treatment and conceived our son Max in the first round. Then we tried again, but it was unsuccessful and we started looking into adoption. Then Jamie and Daniel came up and we expressed an interest. It was approached it with caution

because of Max. But we followed our instinct and eventually the boys came to live with us. "I can honestly say that going from being a family of three to five has not been as big a shock as I thought it would be. Somebody at work said to me, 'I just can’t understand why you’ve done it'. We wanted to do it. When your chance of having a family has been jeopardised and you think it might not happen, the appreciation of children is enormous. I feel immensely lucky. There are so many reasons for the boys to be together. The boys play for hours together. Our wider family have been open, generous and warm with the boys and there is definitely a connection. It warms your heart when you see them all together. It gives us a sense of happiness and fulfilment. Sometimes we just think: ‘wow’, this happened. ELY COLLEGE STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM NEW FITNESS EQUIPMENT THANKS TO LIFE FITNESS UK The fitness suite at Ely College has been given a welcome boost with the addition of new strength equipment donated by Life Fitness UK. Prior to the arrival of this new equipment, the fitness suite had been more geared towards cardio exercise, with a select number of weightlifting options available to students. Now equipped with high-quality sets of Life Fitness kettlebells, dumbbells, barbells and tires, the College will be able to implement more strength exercises into its lessons, courses and Session 6 afterschool offer, much to the delight of teachers and students. Serving 1,100 students across three key stages, from 11 to 18-year-olds, Ely College, and its dedicated post-16 provision Bishop Laney Sixth Form, plan to utilise the equipment in a multitude of ways to support educational activities and to assist with its wider responsibility of promoting health and fitness within its school community. From use in main school core PE lessons, in activities such as circuit training, to gym routines followed by Bishop Laney Sport and Exercise Science students and those enrolled on the Norwich City Football Club Scholar’s Programme, the equipment will have a broad impact across

34 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

the College and will provide teachers with more scope when planning and delivering classes. The equipment will also contribute positively to the College’s existing commitment to helping improve students’ overall health and wellbeing – an important aspect of school life – and PE Curriculum Leader, Jason Coe, is excited by this new opportunity: “The equipment donated to us by Life Fitness UK has been an excellent addition to our fitness suite. It has given us the opportunity to engage more students in fitness, and because we now have more equipment to share around, it means that students get to spend more time using it, which greatly benefits them. “Before the new equipment arrived, our suite was quite cardio heavy, so the new strength equipment has allowed us to expand our offering, which is ideal for our students who will be able to use it as part of the core curriculum, in conjunction with their courses, and as extracurricular activities such as PLEDGES Plus time and our upcoming 12 Hours of Sport charity event.” For Life Fitness UK, it has been a pleasure being able to assist a local school in achieving their health and fitness aims. UK Manager, Danny Oliver said “We hope that students and teachers alike continue to enjoy the equipment to stay fit and active.”

A PASSION FOR GUITAR PLAYING! I would like to introduce myself. I am a Classical guitarist offering tuition in the Ely area. Although I had a completely different career several years ago classical guitar has always been my passion. What I love about the guitar is that there is such a variety of music to choose from. It lends itself to music of different periods and genres including Baroque, Classical and Romantic, Spanish or Latin American or contemporary popular music. It is just such a versatile instrument. I truly believe in the provision of music tuition generally, for schools and the wider community and I am an enthusiastic and patient tutor. Look out for my new website coming soon with playing tips, lessons and interactive forum. Please contact me for more details. I can teach children or adults and am happy to come to you and teach you in your own home. karensetchfield07@gmail.com

TWO CATHEDRAL CANONS AND THEIR TRUSTY DOGS LEAD THE WAY FOR ADVENT SLEEPOUT CHALLENGE Two Canons of Ely Cathedral slept out to raise money for homeless charities on December 15th. Canon Jessica Martin and Canon Victoria Johnson were wrapped up warm in the Galilee Porch of the Cathedral to raise awareness of the growing problem in Ely and around the country. Canon Johnson said “Since 2010, there has been a 169% increase in homelessness. 4751 people are estimated to sleep rough. We are just trying to do our bit to help and we hope people will sponsor the event generously.” In 2015, a team from Ely Cathedral raised over £11,000 pounds for the cause and they are hoping to raise a similar amount this year. Canon Martin and Canon Johnson were accompanied by their respective dogs, Gonzo and Percy. If you would like to sponsor the sleepout go to the supporter page to sign up: https://www.sleepoutchallenge.org.uk/ Contact receptionist@elycathedral.org for more information. 38 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com
