WELCOME ...from the EDITOR Dear Readers, It’s been a great year for the Elyi and we hope it has been for you too. During 2016 we stepped up production to become a monthly mag and have continued to grow and develop, working hard on getting more charity groups and advertisers using us so we can bring it to you. As we start the New Year we would like to thank everybody who takes the time to contribute. There really are too many of you to mention, but suffice to say, without you sending in copy, dates, updates, posters etc we just couldn’t do it. Thanks to Matt for his monthly article on Ely Drama and of course, to Cllr. Lis Every and now Cllr. Ian Lyndsay for telling us all about what our Mayors get up to! Isn’t our January cover by James Billings dramatic?! You can find more amazing images from him on facebook. We are so grateful for all the help and encouragement we have received. It is great when people thank us for the magazine and say how much they value it. I now Madeleine gets a real kick out of visiting our advertisers on her monthly magazine drops and rounds. We have a brilliant delivery team of 15 local people who get the magazine out to you every month in all weathers. Once a month, something resembling ‘The Italian Job’ takes place in a cul-de-sac in Ely with cardboard boxes swiftly bundled into car boots under the cover of darkness from a dimly-lit garage. Teenagers, Mums & Dads, Grandparents all get involved in the military operation that sees 10,000 mags through letter boxes and onto shop counters over 5 days. Thank you to them! Please do keep it all coming. The content of this magazine is driven by you. Sometimes we feel we are merely scratching the surface. We want it to truly reflect the richness of Ely life and if 2016 was anything to go by, it is rich indeed.

IAN LINDSAY MAYOR OF ELY As you would imagine advent and Christmas is an incredibly busy time for Mayors all over the country, and Ely is no exception. Kicking off with the Christmas lights switch-on on 25th November there has been a spectacular number of celebrations to attend.

It really is a privilege as Mayor to be asked to these kinds of events. As the year draws to an end we look forward to renewal. May you all have a happy and prosperous New Year. Cllr. Ian Lindsay

There was a magnificent Thanksgiving service in the Cathedral hosted by our American friends and allies from Mildenhall and Lakenheath, a beautiful Christmas tree festival hosted by the Methodist Chapel, a National Carol Service organised and attended by Townswomen’s Guilds from miles around, two Christingle services, carol concerts, nativity services and Christmas fairs in abundance. There’s a panto to come, of course. The Christmas lights and switch on event were blessed with cold but dry weather and were enjoyed by thousands. This year Forehill was included, and a pathway of multi-coloured lights led down the hill to Father Christmas’ grotto. He was kept busy for the entire evening, as were the swathes of volunteers needed to run the evening. We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude. No sooner does the event finish, than planning for next year’s spectacle begins anew. I thought that it was particularly nice that Churches Together in Ely were able to put on a living nativity once again. This helped remind us of the connection between the lights switch on, the entertainments and the true meaning of Christmas. It was fun to see camels back in town, and especially pleasing to see a former Mayor and High Sheriff wheeling the barrow with shovel behind the cavalcade to help keep the City clean and tidy. I now know what will be expected of me in the future! The Christmas Tree Festival involved at least 25 local organisations who dressed trees to represent their groups, and many contributed readings or hymns and carols to the accompanying church service. It was a first for myself and Suzanne: first time at the tree festival and first time in the chapel. What a tremendous facility they have, and so widely used by myriad community organisations. OVERCOME ANXIETY & MAKE 2017 YOUR YEAR

2) USE THIS ANXIETY BUSTING HACK:

If you are currently struggling with anxiety, panic and dread then the New Year may not have ushered in thoughts and feelings of hope and optimism.

3) GET MOVING:

Anxiety can rob you of the happiness and confidence that you deserve. All those unwanted thoughts and feelings can leave you feeling stuck in an ever growing cycle of dread, worry and fear. You can start to evaporate unwanted thoughts and feelings right now using these three tips: 1) GET SUPPORT: Many people with anxiety keep it bottled up and hidden so consider talking about how you feel to someone who you trust and who will be supportive. If anxiety is impacting on your life then go and speak to your GP for advice.

When you feel anxious, your breathing gets faster and shallower as your body gets ready to take action. Practice reversing this process and kick starting your natural relaxation response by deliberating extending your out breath. Breathe in for a mental count of five and out for a count of nine and keep repeating throughout the day.

Give your body an outlet for all those physical symptoms of anxiety by getting out for a ten minute brisk walk each day. Vary your route and as you walk, make a deliberate point of keeping your head up, walking tall and looking around you. You can find more advice and support, as well as a free supportive audio, on my website www.danreganhypnotherapy.co.uk

When you are in the midst of the anxiety, it can feel like a never ending ongoing battle just to get through the day. Yet there is help to start the process of easing that anxiety and finding the freedom you are seeking. Dan Regan Hypnotherapist

Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership

Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long

standing company policy of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Ely, Littleport, Soham,

Haddenham Stretham & surrounding areas and manager Tim Law agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Tim a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

KING’S ELY ACREMONT AND NURSERY If you live, work, shop or sightsee in Ely you are bound to have seen pupils from King’s Ely Acremont and Nursery out and about on their travels. We believe learning is an adventure and our committed staff love nothing more than organising special trips and days out to help keep the children stimulated and engaged. Our recent excursion to London, where excited pupils visited St Paul’s Cathedral and took a boat trip along the River Thames, was extremely popular. However, so too was our adventure to Ely fire station, even though it was just a two minute walk down the road! The entertaining yet educational visit saw members of Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service educating the children about the importance of fire safety, telling them more about the urgent nature of their jobs and of course allowing them to climb up into one of their fire engines. King’s Ely Acremont and Nursery serves the academic and pastoral needs of children aged 1-7. As is the culture throughout King’s Ely Junior and King’s Ely Senior, we are inspiringly innovative and visionary, yet built on a fascinating history stretching back over 1,000 years. Small class sizes in a beautiful setting teamed with forward-thinking teaching by wellqualified and caring staff prepare children for their lives ahead and all it may hold for them. Our curriculum is dynamic, we have outdoor learning and play in abundance, and expert teachers from other parts of King’s Ely visit us to teach sport, music and foreign languages, encouraging early excellence and continuity of provision. King’s Ely Acremont and Nursery has a Spring Tour Event on Tuesday, January 17th starting at 9.30am. LITTLEPORT LIONS CLUB Our Breakfast with Santa was a resounding success with well over 200 people enjoying the event held over 3 days at The Almonry Ely. Completely sold out by the end of November, so if you wish to join us next year make a note in your new diary now to book in October 2017 so you don’t miss out on this fun event. We had a visit for a very special person in red who gave presents to every child. Our thanks to Mike and all his staff for allowing us to use The Almonry and for preparing all the breakfasts. Without his help this event would not take place. We also visited 2 local residential homes in Ely and provided Christmas tipple, a present and

had a singsong. So as you can see Littleport Lions support local events for all age ranges and hope to continue to do so. We are now putting together our 2017 programme of events so if you would like to participate in our fun fundraising efforts or if you have or know of any local charities or clubs that might benefit from a small injection of cash please contact us, or come along to our meeting at The Grange Littleport. Our next meeting is on Sunday 5th Feb at 2pm. We are an all inclusive club so welcome everyone including families with children. ELY PERSPECTIVE PROJECT LAUNCH At Ely Perspective we create projects for improving the city of Ely and making it an interesting place to live in and visit. Our mission statement is to respect the past, enhance the present and plan for the future. Currently our group is excited about the heritage photograph project we have called Then & Now. Members of the Perspective have selected a dozen buildings in the centre of Ely, where there exists an interesting photograph of how each business looked in much earlier times. The photographs (with an descriptive note) will each be placed in the window of their building, so passers-by can compare how they looked then with how they look now and see what changes have been made over the years.

To launch the project, Ely Museum is playing host to an exhibition of all the photographs in the Vernon Cross Room on Saturday 28th January and Sunday 29th January during normal museum opening times. Entry to the exhibition is free. In addition to the Then & Now photos, there will be displays of some of Ely Perspective’s other recent and upcoming projects. One of these is a new walk around the city taking in notable signs and features - including our very own historical plaques which commemorate people and buildings which played key parts in the history of Ely in various ways. Members of the Perspective will be on hand to answer questions about Then & Now and other initiatives the group are involved in. GROWTH FOR WITCHFORD LIGHTING CENTRE Company Director and owner Stephen Wayman started off as an electrician after completing his training and qualifying 22 years ago. COULD YOU WRITE A POEM FOR FENLAND? Are you inspired by the wild beauty of the Fens? Would you like to be the poetic voice of Fenland? ADeC, Fen Speak, and Atelier East are proud to announce the Fenland Poet Laureate poetry competition for 2017! This is a chance for writers from across the Fens to come together, share their poetry and help put Fenland on the creative map! And best of all, it’s free to enter the competition! The competition organisers are looking for poems that represent and relate to theme ‘Fenland’. The subject is a wide one: you can interpret the theme in any way you choose. The judges are really looking forward to reading your entries! Winning the title of Fenland Poet Laureate is a great recognition of talent, as well as a fantastic opportunity to engage with your local community. The Laureate will be able to write about local events throughout the year and present poems for special occasions, working with others to develop ideas for bringing poetry to Fenland. Awards: First, second and third places will be awarded to three of the poets in both the adult (18+) category and the young (10-17) category. Certificates of achievement will be given to all shortlisted and commended entrants. All shortlisted and commended poets will be invited to the special Fenland Poet Laureate Awards evening in March 2017. Deadlines for entry: Midnight on Friday 27th January 2017.

SAM EVANS (AGED 13) – A TRIP TO KENYA WITH ELY COLLEGE IN OCTOBER 2017 Sam Evans, along with 22 others, is travelling to Kenya in Oct 2017 on a trip with Ely College, organised with African Adventures www.african-adventures.co.uk) African Adventures is the UK’s leading volunteer travel organisation, specialising in educational trips and dedicated to improving lives. They are partnered with community educational projects in developing areas of Ghana, Kenya and Zanzibar and provide humanitarian and financial support to assist their development. It’s the chance for a trip of a life time and Sam didn’t hesitate to say yes when given the opportunity. However, now comes the hard part. All those travelling are being encouraged to raise the funds to pay for the trip themselves and so you will start to see all sorts of events taking place. It would be really appreciated if you could support as many of them as possible. In Sam’s case he has already organised a successful curry night at Le Spice, and his next event is on 28th January at Ely Rugby Club As far as we know this is a first for Ely, as he is planning a Bandeoke (that’s karaoke with a live band). Ticket numbers are limited by the size of the venue, and are already starting to sell well. There will be a full bar open all evening and further details on how to book tickets are available on the poster. Various musicians are coming together and rehearsing already, the lights, amps and microphones are all sorted, and the words will soon be available – all we now need is YOU! Your support of this and other events would be much appreciated (see poster on next page!).
