Dear Readers

Welcome to the June online issue. Our 44 page printed version is delivered to Ely homes and businesses and this extended 56 page version includes the extra Groups and Meets Section (pink pages 42-53) We have included a selection in our events pages (36-41) but, short of including the entire Isle of Ely Festival Programme we were never going to get them all in! Hopefully you will have picked up a programme from around the town or viewed it on the festival website. What a great job Sheila Friend- Smith and her team have done in gathering all the local events together. It really does celebrate the arts and culture throughout East Cambridgeshire. Some of you may have noticed that the HIVE is now fully functioning on the new Leisure village. If you haven’t been yet, it’s well worth a visit. The whole place is gleaming with a flawless finish, it’s been well thought out and the gym and swimming pool has a spacious, well equipped feel that is more than functional for the novice keep-fitter or the dedicated 6.30am swimmer and gym-goer. There are a number of fitness classes to choose from, catering for everyone’s level of fitness. In fact, Ely is a wonderful place for the whole family to visit for the day. If you don’t live here, give us a try; We have the choice of four fantastic supermarkets, a riverside area to embrace in warm sunshine, a wonderful city centre with a bustling market place with extended mini markets, not to mention the pubs and restaurants in the City Centre, great new shops immerging and new businesses popping up all over the place. The new Leisure Village has cleverly embraced the Tennis Club, Golf Course, Rugby and Football clubs and Squash Courts, to mention a few. So, something for everyone. The Cathedral is holding some wonderful events this year, it’s not only a place to worship but a thriving events centre for the City including the ever popular Flower Festival in June. Expect visitors to arrive by the coach load! We offer all our visitors to Ely this summer a very warm welcome. See you in Ely!

Edmund Carter in The History of Cambridgeshire, published in 1749, gave the origin of Ely as being derived from Helig, the Saxon word for willow. A few years ago Mac Dowdy, the distinguished architectural historian, put forward the theory that Ely was derived from Elysian, as in heavenly fields.

ELY

Whats in a name? By Mike Rouse

The most popularly accepted theory for the origin of the name Ely is that put forward by the Venerable Bede who lived from around 672 to 735. He wrote that Ely was so called because of the vast quantities of eels caught in the waters surrounding the small fenland island on which Saint Etheldreda founded her abbey in 673. They were caught in their thousands and not only provided a source of food for the fen dwellers but they could also be used as currency, for paying rent and purchasing goods. It is said that the stone to build Ely cathedral, most of it coming from the quarries at Barnack near Peterborough, was paid for in eels. Thomas, an Ely monk in the twelfth century, however, wrote in the Liber Eliensis, that El-ge should be translated as El, the Hebrew for God, and Ge, the Greek word for land, therefore making Ely, the Land of God. Photos - Mike Rouse

That colourful Victorian cleric, author and hymn writer of ‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ Sabine BaringGould, was a frequent visitor to the fens, being a friend of John Titterton, the Ely photographer and the Revd Claude Drewitt Kingdon, vicar of Prickwillow from 1888. Baring-Gould wrote a novel Cheap Jack Zita,(1894) which is set in Ely and the Fens and he suggested that the origins of the name came from Elf Island or Island of Fairies. Fortunately for Ely we have accepted the Venerable Bede’s explanation, or we might now be following an elf trail or having a ‘fairy festival’, instead Ely has an eel trail with small brass eels set into the footpaths to mark the route and an eel sculpture in the Jubilee Gardens by Peter Baker installed in 2005 and commissioned by the Rotary Club of Ely to mark the centenary of Rotary International. There is an annual eel festival with a carnival procession. Eel glaives, the barbed pronged spears used to catch the eels feature on the City of Ely badge and are depicted in another sculpture outside the Maltings. So, city of eels, it is. Agreed? Mike Rouse

Eel Festival 2018! The Crowds enjoyed fantastic weather over the record-breaking bank holiday Eel Festival weekend. Were you in the parade?

Aquafest memories please...

This year’s Ely Aquafest on Sunday July 1st, organised by the two Rotary Clubs in Ely, will celebrate its fortieth anniversary. The event, started by the Rotary Club of Ely as a “thank you” to the community for supporting Rotary’s fundraising throughout the year, began as a modest riverbased event, but now encompasses the river and both Lavender Green and Jubilee Gardens as well, attracting thousands of visitors to see the arena events and visit the multitude of stalls and funfair rides. (also see page 14) To celebrate this special anniversary the Aquafest team are hoping to produce a video presentation and a static display of photos of past Aquafests in The Maltings. If anyone has any photos which the Aquafest team could borrow and copy, particularly those from the 1970s 80s, and 90s they would be extremely grateful. Photos should be sent (with return address please) to Viv Doji, Ely Aquafest Photos, 52 Prickwillow Road, Ely, CB7 4QT or e-mailed to: vclariced@hotmail.com by the first week in June.

Ribe RoKlub visit Ely A small group of rowers from the Rowing Club of Ribe in Denmark, Ribe RoKlub, visited Ely at the invitation of the Isle of Ely Rowing Club over the Eel Day weekend. The visit was supported by the Ely Ribe Association as part of their initiative to link up similar interest groups in the twinned cities. Howard McMillan, Chairman of the Association, presented each club with a framed certificate to commemorate the visit at an informal dinner on Saturday

evening. He hopes that this will be the start of regular meetings between the clubs. Talks have already begun about a return visit. The rowers from Ribe were hosted by members of the Ely club and took part in the Eel Day celebrations. Rowers from both clubs spent time together on the river and new friendships were made during a very successful weekend.

Photos - Mike Rouse

Danish flags will fly again in Ely from 21-25 June, as 20 guests from our twin town of Ribe will be visiting the city as guests of the ElyRibe Association. The visit is timed to coincide with the prestigious Cathedral Flower Festival, but will begin with a reception in Oliver Cromwell House on the Thursday evening and the opportunity for a private viewing of the building and a welcome from the Mayor. Guests and hosts will visit the Festival on the Friday and spend the following day in and around the city, before gathering for a celebration dinner in Little Downham Village Hall on the Saturday evening. After a tour of the Prickwillow Drainage Museum on Sunday afternoon, our Danish visitors will leave for home on the Monday. They will be accommodated in the homes of our Association members, and thus will have plenty of opportunity to sample the English way of life and what our city has to offer. Old friendships will be reinforced and new ones made over what promises to be a very busy weekend! Our thanks go to the City of Ely Council for supporting this visit. 6 | Elyi Magazine | www.elyimagazine.com

Ely Flower Club

The City of Ely Flower Club's Open Evening on 3rd May was an outstanding success. Gill McGregor, Area Demonstrator arranged stunning designs. Her use of flowers and manipulation of leaves was amazing. She also entertained the audience with her stories as she worked her magic on stage. There was a Buffet beforehand and the Club would like to thank all Members who provided the food. There was so much choice, best buffet ever. Our Charity for 2018/2019 is Centre 33 (Ely), which provides free accessible information, counselling and support to any young person Gill McGregor with aged 8-25 in one of her designs Cambridgeshire to enable them to overcome the effects of poor health, isolation, disadvantage and inequality so as to achieve their potential. Our fundraising raffle on the evening raised ÂŁ170 for this very worthy cause.

Looking Back

This Month in Ely History A catastrophic rail crash on the 2nd June 1944 in Soham was caused when a freight train carrying a cargo including 400 tonnes of bombs in readiness for the upcoming D-Day landings, exploded following a fire in its cargo wagon. Fortunately, the train’s crew including driver, Benjamin Gimbert, James Nightall, a fireman, and the train guard, Herbert Clarke, were able to detach the alight wagon from the rest of the train, though had only managed to create a gap of 130 metres before the explosion occurred. As a result, both Nightall, and the signalman at Soham signal box, Frank Bridges were killed, with several more also being injured in the blast. Gimbert, who survived the blast, and Nightall, were awarded the George Cross in October 1944 for the action they took, which prevented further damage and potentially a much greater loss of life.

The explosion destroyed much of the stations infrastructure and caused severe damage to over 700 houses. Vibrations were felt & windows were shattered for many miles in the villages surrounding Soham. The explosion left a crater of almost 15ft deep and 66ft in diameter across the fen! Despite the severity of the explosion, emergency repairs, meant that the line was open to freight traffic within eighteen hours and passenger traffic resumed the next day! Stationed nearby, the American Engineering Corps were drafted in under the direction of the Royal Engineers from the British Army, to help fill the crater and make essential repairs.

The Soham Railway Station, which originally opened on 1st September 1879, wasn't fully rebuilt following this disaster, however a platform was soon built which allowed services to resume. A permanent memorial to those who lost their lives in this disaster was unveiled in Soham on the 2nd June 2007 Emily Allen Custodian at Ely Museum www.elyimagazine.com | Elyi Magazine | 7

LUCY FRAZER MP

Email: lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk A political careers event initiated by local MP Lucy Frazer took place at Ely College at the end of March. King’s Ely pupils also joined in the event which was designed to help students understand the role of government at every level and aimed at year 9 pupils. Lucy said, “When considering future career choices, secondary school pupils often consider careers that they have some knowledge of but not many of us have an understanding of what it means to work in politics whether local or national. The political careers event was about offering 13-14 year old students ahead of GCSE a glimpse of the business of government and it was very well received by pupils, staff and guest speakers alike.” In addition to investing in local pupils, Lucy has been witnessing more and more business investment in Ely, having officially opened the Deanta UK headquarters at Lancaster Way Business Park and more recently the new Ely office of law firm Fraser Dawbarns. While there, Lucy was able to pop next door to accountancy firm Whiting & Partners to congratulate local Ely born Amanda Newman who has just been made partner having joined the business as an apprentice 18 years ago!

Lucy’s petition which we wrote about in our March issue, to gather local support for improving the A10 and consequently making a strong case for government investment has now got over 1000 signatures. Those still wishing to show their support can still do so by going to www.lucyfrazer. org.uk/campaigns and clicking on the petition to add their name. Lucy is challenging proposed changes to the Great Northern Railway timetable which will detrimentally affect those commuters who use the off peak 08.58 service from Ely to London Kings Cross. The first off-peak service available on the new timetable is not until 09.17 which will be too late for those who have been using the 08.58 to enable them to be in work by 09.30. Lucy has written to Govia Thameslink Railway to complain about the changes and also to complain about the lack of consultation and very poor communication with those passengers who start their journey from Ely Station. If you have an issue you would like to raise with Lucy, please email her at: lucy.frazer.mp@parliament.uk

Aquafest 2018

This year’s Aquafest, to be held on Sunday 1st July, will be the 40th anniversary of the event. The organisers, the Rotary clubs of Ely, have been working hard to make this years' event even better than usual. All the usual favourites including the fairground rides, catering outlets, arena events and charity and commercial stalls will be present but this year we are going to start the entertainment at 10:30 to make this a whole-day event. Among the early events will be an MG vintage car display, childrens races and a stand up Paddle Boarding demonstration on the river. The raft races will continue to be a main feature and the Wake Board demo proved so popular last year that we have arranged for them to come again.

We are delighted to announce that our friends at Life Fitness UK are running a competition to giveaway 3 table tennis tables and 1 foosball table to 4 local charities. To enter this competition, we are just asking for interested charities our community groups to email in with the name of their charity/ group, a brief description of why they would like the prize, their preferred prize and contact details by the closing date of 4th June 2018. Send your entry to: life@lifefitness.com or call 01353 666017 for any questions. The winners will be announced on Friday 8th June. Good luck to everyone who enters!

One really special extra feature we have arranged is a fly past by a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Hurricane of WWII vintage. For more information on the events, stalls, races together with all the timings please see the website www.elyaquafest.org.uk

The Tempest is coming to King’s Ely’s Old Palace!

The Lord Chamberlain’s Men are bringing the hugely popular open-air production to the picturesque gardens of King’s Ely’s Old Palace on the evening of Wednesday, June 6th – and tickets are selling fast! A play of soaring poetry, high comedy and tender love, and widely believed to be the last full play that Shakespeare wrote alone, The Tempest examines the power of true love, our capacity for vengeance and what it takes to forgive. A play that has mesmerised and moved audiences for over 400 years is just as relevant and powerful today. Prospero, the usurped Duke of Milan, and his daughter, Miranda, after being cast out from their home, are washed up on a distant, mystical island. 12 years later his enemies are blown off course towards them. Using his powers of magic, he raises a tempest to shipwreck them on the island. After being left to plot his revenge for years he finally has the chance to exact it. But will he? Artistic Director, Peter Stickney, said: “With some of Shakespeare’s most memorable speeches and packed with famous characters – from the elemental and ethereal Caliban and Ariel to the comic clowns Trinculo and Stephano and the enchanting force that unites them all, Prospero – The

Town Crier Championships

As if the regular festivities weren’t enough, the British Town Crier Championships were held during the Eel festival weekend and winner, Michael Wood, Crier from Yorkshire is pictured below with our own Avril Hayter Smith and husband, Graham. Michael was acclaimed British Champion of the Loyal Company of Town Criers. ...and if Eel Day isn’t quirky enough! Spotted in Ely Rocks (SIER) Facebook group organised an Eel Wiggle of 1,000 eel painted rocks in order to celebrate Eel Day. Organiser, Fleur Patten said, “It seemed like the most logical thing to do. We had a LoveFest at the Prince Albert for Valentine’s Day when we dropped 1,000 love rocks in their garden in aid of Pride Ely and BHF. For Eel Day, painting eels in a Wiggle, seemed obvious!”

So many people contributed to the rock wiggle but SIER would particularly like to thank Bibby’s Landscaping for donating thousand s of rocks to be painted and for supporting the Gren fell Project so personally.

Rockers from Ely, and as far as Northamptonshire, painted eel images on rocks and dropped them in a wiggly line in Jubilee Gardens on Eel Day. Councillor Richard Hobbs, Mayor of Ely, kindly measured the Wiggle in the hope of setting a new World Record for the longest line of painted rocks and helpers were on hand to ensure that all rocks were touching in order to fulfil the criteria. The Wiggle measured an amazing 70.6 metres!

Multiple schools, nurseries, play groups, Rainbows, Brownies and community groups joined in and contributed eel rocks to the project. The Smith family of Ely contributed the most, painting 160 eels rocks! Fleur Patten, Admin for SIER was astonished by the community effort; “We have 3,700 Ely Rockers and some come from as far away as Australia and the U.S.! The group has only been going since last October but now everyone in our city seems to be hiding and finding rocks.

This was a unique project because usually we encourage anonymous acts of kindness by dropping a rock and leaving it for a stranger to find. This time, the rocks had one theme; eels, and we laid them out for everyone to admire in the sun on the day. They were a big hit.” This time though, the eel rocks were not free to be taken away; instead they have been stored in Fleur’s cellar in the hope for arranging a permanent installation of the 1,000 community eels with the council so that everyone can enjoy. Where would you like the eels to be exhibited?

as well as 72 rocks - each with the name of a victim of the fire. “We’ve had so many projects since January this year. Rockers are phenomenal! Whatever crazy idea I have, they simply astonish me with their talent, creativity and imagination every time.”

The next Rock project is to paint the words on images of Inspirational Women for Etheldreda’s Fair on 2nd June. Fleur will also be attending the one year anniversary silent walk for the Grenfell Tower fire next month and she will be dropping rocks of support Photos - supplied by SIER

50 Years…a Celebration! An exhibition of 100 artists June 7th – July 8th 2018

Ann Jarman’s aim to create a gallery showcasing contemporary art and a restaurant using local ingredients and traditional recipes was a relatively unusual concept fifty years ago however the business has been a huge success and thrives today. With her husband Michael, Ann has now curated this extraordinary exhibition which she describes as “a wonderful celebration for everyone who has supported us over the last fifty years; staff, artists and customers, some of whom have been with us from the very beginning and have become great friends.” Visitors to The Old Fire Engine House are free to explore the galleries and large walled gardens and customers can enjoy morning and afternoon teas, lunch and dinner. Guests are welcomed into the bar where a photograph of Ely's horse-drawn fire engine and firefighters hangs over the log fire as

Cathedral Flower Festival News!

Hot on the heels of Chelsea, celebrity Gardener, Diarmuid Gavin is to officially open Ely’s eagerly awaited Flower Festival. TV personality and celebrity gardener, Diarmuid Gavin, will be making a special appearance at Ely Cathedral’s Flower Festival, which takes place in June. Diarmuid will be guest of honour at the Festival’s preview evening on Wednesday 20 June where preview ticket holders can enjoy a glass of champagne in the Bishop of Ely’s beautiful medieval gardens and get a sneak preview of the magnificent floral displays before the event opens to the public on 21 June. Known for his Irish charm and expert knowledge on garden design and flora, Diarmuid is the perfect guest to front Ely’s Flower Festival which will include over 50,000 blooms transformed into 100 striking exhibits. “A flower festival is the perfect place for me. There are similarities with making a show garden, except with a garden you have a month to build it, these Flower Arrangers produce miraculous creations in a couple of days”. As a devotee of flowers and gardens, Diarmuid will also be attending RHS Chelsea press day to launch the new Ely Cathedral Rose. The rose has been produced by award winning East Anglian rose growers, Peter Beales. As a specialist propagator of new blooms, they have won many prestigious

awards including 24 Gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show. This subtly scented, repeat flowering shrub plant produces a wonderful multiheaded display of deep red buds open to reveal double, ruffled blooms which was much admired by HRH Prince Charles at the Sandringham Flower Show last year, when he was inspecting a few of the new unnamed new species. Other supporters and sponsors of the event include Cheffins, Cambridge Independent, G’s, McCarthy & Stone and The Old Hall. The Flower Festival is open to the public from 21 to 24 June. In addition to the displays there will be musical performances, demonstrations by floral experts, delicious food & drink outlets and a bespoke Gift & Craft Marquee located in the Cathedral grounds. Further information on the Festival including limited preview evening tickets, general ticket sales, opening times and travel information is available on the website www.elycathedral.org or by calling the Box Office on 01353 660349.
